ABSTRACT

The nuclear receptor subfamily 5 group A member 1 (NR5A1) gene encodes NR5A1, also known as steroidogenic factor 1, a crucial transcriptional factor regulating adrenal and gonadal development and function. Although pathogenic variants in NR5A1 are known to cause a spectrum of disorders of sex development (DSD), individuals with 46,XY DSD with fully female internal and external genitalia are relatively rare. Herein, we present the case of a patient with 46,XY complete gonadal dysgenesis (CGD) who had a non-communicating rudimentary uterus due to a c.132_134del (p.Asn44del) heterozygous in-frame-deletion in NR5A1 that was diagnosed while treating a pelvic mass in which gynecological malignancy could not be disregarded. Unlike two previous cases with the p.Asn44del variant, this case presented with CGD, a severe DSD phenotype, and we found that the oligogenic inheritance of DSD-causative genes such as SRY, DHX37, SLC26A8, and CFTR may have affected the severity of the clinical phenotype.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Itai-itai disease is the most severe case of chronic cadmium (Cd) toxicity, which was endemic in Cd-polluted areas in the Jinzu River basin in Toyama prefecture, Japan. Akita prefecture also has Cd-polluted areas, but there have been no cases of "itai-itai disease". CASE PRESENTATION: An elderly female farmer with Cd nephropathy residing in a Cd-polluted area in the northern part of the Akita prefecture was identified through hospital-based screening at Akita Rosai Hospital in Odate city. She had chronic renal failure with a high Cd exposure level and advanced renal tubular dysfunction. The shortening of height, bone deformities and fractures, abnormal bone metabolism suggesting osteomalacia, and renal anemia were also noted. Therefore, "itai-itai disease", similar to cases in the Jinzu River basin, was suspected. CONCLUSION: This is the first case of "itai-itai disease" in a Cd-polluted area in Akita prefecture.

ABSTRACT

A 27-year-old nulliparous woman presented with a feeling of fullness in the lower abdomen and abdominal pain. A left ovarian tumor, uterus didelphys, left renal agenesis, and left vaginal atresia were observed on imaging. The ovarian tumor was presumed to have caused the abdominal pain, and an abdominal left adnexectomy was performed. After 3 months, she reported severe lower abdominal pain during menstruation. Transvaginal ultrasonography revealed uterine enlargement. After 17 days, the patient presented with abdominal pain and fever. She was diagnosed with peritonitis due to infection and left uterine hematometra. Because she did not improve with antibiotic treatment, left laparoscopic hysterectomy was performed. Subsequently, she did not experience the lower abdominal pain. Appropriate diagnosis and treatment based on the morphology of the reproductive tract and symptoms must be considered in patients with Herlyn-Werner-Wunderlich syndrome. Treatment must permit the outflow of menstrual blood.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: There are few reported cases of robot-assisted surgery for endometrial cancer with para-aortic lymphadenectomy (PAL) in Japan. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the clinical outcomes of robot-assisted surgery with PAL for endometrial cancer. Materials and Methods: This retrospective cohort study was analyzed 13 endometrial cancer patients who underwent robotic surgery with PAL between January 2011 and October 2018 at our hospital. We examined their perioperative complications and oncological outcomes. Results: The median follow-up period, median overall survival, and disease-free interval were 80 months, 79 months (61-120), and 79 months (5-120), respectively. There were two (15.3%) cases of perioperative complications of Clavien-Dindo Class II or higher and three (23.0%) cases of recurrence. Conclusion: Our results showed that the surgical and oncological outcomes of robot-assisted surgery for endometrial cancer with PAL were comparable with those of other developed countries.

ABSTRACT

Nanoscale thermal imaging and temperature detection are of fundamental importance in diverse scientific and technological realms. Most nanoscale thermometry techniques focus on probing the temperature of lattice or phonons and are insensitive to nonequilibrium electrons, commonly referred to as "hot electrons." While terahertz scanning noise microscopy (SNoiM) has been demonstrated to be powerful in the thermal imaging of hot electrons, prior studies have been limited to room temperature. In this work, we report the development of a cryogenic SNoiM (Cryo-SNoiM) tailored for quantitative hot electron temperature detection at low temperatures. The microscope features a special two-chamber design where the sensitive terahertz detector, housed in a vacuum chamber, is efficiently cooled to ∼5 K using a pulse tube cryocooler. In a separate chamber, the atomic force microscope and the sample can be maintained at room temperature under ambient/vacuum conditions or cooled to ∼110 K via liquid nitrogen. This unique dual-chamber cooling system design enhances the efficacy of SNoiM measurements at low temperatures. It not only facilitates the pre-selection of tips at room temperature before cooling but also enables the quantitative derivation of local electron temperature without reliance on any adjustable parameters. The performance of Cryo-SNoiM is demonstrated through imaging the distribution of hot electrons in a cold, self-heated narrow metal wire. This instrumental innovation holds great promise for applications in imaging low-temperature hot electron dynamics and nonequilibrium transport phenomena across various material systems.

OBJECTIVE: To measure neuromagnetic fields of ulnar neuropathy patients at the elbow after electrical stimulation and evaluate ulnar nerve function at the elbow with high spatial resolution. METHODS: A superconducting quantum interference device magnetometer system recorded neuromagnetic fields of the ulnar nerve at the elbow after electrical stimulation at the wrist in 16 limbs of 16 healthy volunteers and 21 limbs of 20 patients with ulnar neuropathy at the elbow. After artifact removal, neuromagnetic field signals were processed into current distributions, which were superimposed onto X-ray images for visualization. RESULTS: Based on the results in healthy volunteers, conduction velocity of 30 m/s or 50% attenuation in current amplitude was set as the reference value for conduction disturbance. Of the 21 patient limbs, 15 were measurable and lesion sites were detected, whereas 6 limbs were unmeasurable due to weak neuromagnetic field signals. Seven limbs were deemed normal by nerve conduction study, but 5 showed conduction disturbances on magnetoneurography. CONCLUSIONS: Measuring the magnetic field after nerve stimulation enabled visualization of neurophysiological activity in patients with ulnar neuropathy at the elbow and evaluation of conduction disturbances. SIGNIFICANCE: Magnetoneurography may be useful for assessing lesion sites in patients with ulnar neuropathy at the elbow.

ABSTRACT

Background: Cardiac amyloidosis is a fatal disease of severe heart failure caused by the accumulation of amyloid in the myocardium. This disease is often advanced by the time cardiac symptoms appear; therefore, early detection and treatment are critical for a good prognosis. Recently, it has been suggested that cardiac amyloidosis is implicated in several orthopedic diseases, including carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), which is often reported to precede cardiac dysfunction. Shoulder disease has also been suggested to be associated with cardiac amyloidosis; however, there have been no reports investigating the rate of amyloid deposition in shoulder specimens and the simultaneous prevalence of cardiac amyloidosis. Herein, we investigated the prevalence of intraoperative specimen amyloid deposition and cardiac amyloidosis in shoulder disease and CTS to determine the usefulness of shoulder specimen screening as a predictor of cardiac amyloidosis development. Methods: A total of 41 patients undergoing arthroscopic shoulder surgery and 33 patients undergoing CTS surgery were enrolled in this study. The shoulder group included rotator cuff tears, contracture of the shoulder, synovitis, and calcific tendonitis. In the shoulder group, a small sample of synovium and the long head of the biceps brachii tendon were harvested, while the transverse carpal ligament was harvested from the CTS group. The intraoperative specimens were pathologically examined for amyloid deposition, and patients with amyloid deposition were examined for the presence of cardiac amyloidosis by cardiac evaluation. Results: In the shoulder group, three cases (7.3%) of transthyretin amyloid deposition were found, all of which involved rotator cuff tears. None of these three cases with amyloid deposition were associated with cardiac amyloidosis. When examining the specimens, the amyloid deposition rate in the long head of the biceps brachii tendon was higher than that in the synovium. In the CTS group, 12 cases (36.4%) of transthyretin amyloid deposition were observed. Of these cases, seven underwent cardiac evaluation and two were identified with cardiac amyloidosis. Conclusion: While the prevalence of amyloid deposition and cardiac amyloidosis in the CTS group was consistent with previous reports, the shoulder group showed a lower deposition rate and no concomitant cardiac amyloidosis. Therefore, it remains debatable whether investigating amyloid deposition in samples obtained from shoulder surgery is beneficial for the early detection of cardiac amyloidosis.

AIM: Minimally invasive surgeries for endometrial cancer are increasing worldwide. In Japan, some articles have examined surgical outcomes, but only a few have addressed oncological outcomes. This study aims to compare robot surgery, laparoscopic surgery, and laparotomy in terms of surgical and oncological outcomes within a low-risk group for endometrial cancer recurrence. METHODS: This study included patients with endometrial cancer deemed to be at low risk of recurrence and who underwent surgery between January 2011 and December 2020. We studied 99 patients who underwent robot surgery, 85 patients who underwent laparotomy, and 77 patients who underwent laparoscopic surgery. Surgical and oncological outcomes were compared retrospectively for these groups of patients. RESULTS: The median follow-up period was 47, 61, and 60 months in the laparotomy, laparoscopy, and robotic groups, respectively. The three groups had similar perioperative and pathological data. No significant differences in overall survival and disease-free survival were observed among the groups. Univariate and multivariate analyses conducted on the overall study population for disease-free survival and overall survival showed that the surgical approach did not have any influence. Minimally invasive surgery groups had longer operating times compared to the laparotomy group, but they had significantly less blood loss. The number of resected pelvic lymph nodes was similar, and the complication rate was not significant. CONCLUSIONS: Robot-assisted surgery and laparoscopic surgery were found to be less invasive and showed similar oncologic outcomes compared to laparotomy surgery for endometrial cancer in patients with a low risk of recurrence.

OBJECTIVE: 2-[18F]fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose positron emission tomography ([18F]-FDG-PET) is a imaging modality that has been used to measure of glucose metabolism in the brain in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Clinically, decreased glucose uptake has been reported in the brain of AD, although the precise underlying mechanisms have not yet been elucidated. To elucidate the mechanisms of decreased [18F]-FDG uptake in the AD by PET, [18F]-FDG uptake in the brain of aged model mouse of AD was investigated using a dynamic autoradiography technique "bioradiography". A X-ray phase-contrast imaging (X-PCI) and a histopathological evaluation were also investigated to elucidate the mechanisms underlying the relationships between decreased [18F]-FDG uptake and the pathological changes in the brain of AD mouse. METHODS: In this study, AD model mouse (5XFAD, APP+/PS1+) were used. [18F]-FDG-bioradiography was conducted in fresh slices of brain tissue under the condition of resting (slices immersed in 5 mM K+ solution) and metabolically active (in 50 mM K+ solution). Amyloid ß42 (Aß42) deposition in the brain of AD mouse was confirmed by X-PCI. In addition, the positive cells of phosphated tau protein (P-tau) and deposition of Aß42 were also examined by immunohistochemical staining. RESULTS: No significant differences were observed between the two groups in the resting condition. In the activate condition of the brain, [18F]-FDG uptake was significantly decreased in AD mice compared to WT mice. In X-PCI showed Aß deposition in the AD mouse, but not in the WT. The AD mouse also showed increased P-tau, accumulation of Aß42, increase in neuronal apoptosis, and decrease in the number of neurons than that of the WT mouse. CONCLUSION: Neuronal damage, and induction of neuronal apoptosis, decreased [18F]-FDG uptake, increased Aß accumulation and P-tau induced neurofibrillary degeneration are observed in AD mouse. In clinical diagnosis, reduction of [18F]-FDG uptake by PET is one of the means of diagnosing the onset of AD. Our results suggest that decreased uptake of [18F]-FDG in the brains of AD may be associated with neuronal dysfunction and cell death in the brain.

ABSTRACT

Mesonephric-like adenocarcinoma (MLA) has recently been described as a tumor of the endometrium or ovaries, which, morphologically and immunohistochemically, resembles mesonephric adenocarcinoma arising mostly in the uterine cervix. Herein, we report, to our knowledge, the first case of ovarian MLA that developed into an extremely rapidly growing recurrent mesonephric-like carcinosarcoma, as confirmed by a genomic profiling test. A 51-year-old woman underwent chemotherapy with complete debulking surgery for ovarian carcinoma. Pathologically, the patient was diagnosed with stage IVB ovarian MLA. Subsequent to 15 months of complete remission, an enhanced computed tomography scan revealed a solid tumor of 10 cm diameter in the abdominal cavity. Secondary surgery was terminated with a 2 cm 2 tumor biopsy specimen collection considering perioperative complications. Histologically, the tumor consisted of short spindle cells, and immunohistochemical staining revealed a rhabdomyosarcomatous profile without an epithelial component. Despite treatment for the sarcoma, she died 3 months after the detection of the tumor. The genomic profiling of the primary ovarian carcinoma and secondary resected tumor biopsy specimens revealed an identical KRAS mutation in both. Therefore, we concluded that the ovarian MLA recurred with a rhabdomyosarcoma component.

ABSTRACT

Matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) is a secreted zinc-dependent endopeptidase that degrades the extracellular matrix and basement membrane of neurons, and then contributes to synaptic plasticity by remodeling the extracellular matrix. Inhibition of MMP-9 activity has therapeutic potential for neurodegenerative diseases such as fragile X syndrome. This paper reports the molecular design, synthesis, and in vitro studies of novel indole derivatives as inhibitors of proMMP-9 activation. High-throughput screening (HTS) of our internal compound library and subsequent merging of hit compounds 1 and 2 provided compound 4 as a bona-fide lead. X-ray structure-based design and subsequent lead optimization led to the discovery of compound 33, a highly potent and selective inhibitor of proMMP-9 activation.

ABSTRACT

Severity of neurobehavioral deficits in children born from adverse pregnancies, such as maternal alcohol consumption and diabetes, does not always correlate with the adversity's duration and intensity. Therefore, biological signatures for accurate prediction of the severity of neurobehavioral deficits, and robust tools for reliable identification of such biomarkers, have an urgent clinical need. Here, we demonstrate that significant changes in the alternative splicing (AS) pattern of offspring lymphocyte RNA can function as accurate peripheral biomarkers for motor learning deficits in mouse models of prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) and offspring of mother with diabetes (OMD). An aptly trained deep-learning model identified 29 AS events common to PAE and OMD as superior predictors of motor learning deficits than AS events specific to PAE or OMD. Shapley-value analysis, a game-theory algorithm, deciphered the trained deep-learning model's learnt associations between its input, AS events, and output, motor learning performance. Shapley values of the deep-learning model's input identified the relative contribution of the 29 common AS events to the motor learning deficit. Gene ontology and predictive structure-function analyses, using Alphafold2 algorithm, supported existing evidence on the critical roles of these molecules in early brain development and function. The direction of most AS events was opposite in PAE and OMD, potentially from differential expression of RNA binding proteins in PAE and OMD. Altogether, this study posits that AS of lymphocyte RNA is a rich resource, and deep-learning is an effective tool, for discovery of peripheral biomarkers of neurobehavioral deficits in children of diverse adverse pregnancies.

ABSTRACT

Medium sized molecules such as peptides and macrocycles have recently drawn much attention as potent sources of medicinal lead compounds, whereas the possibility of obtaining a practical drug from them remains limited. The present paper describes a concept of discovering novel medicinal targets or binding modes as well as lead compounds by the one-peptide-on-one-bead (OPOB) technology for comprehensive screening. The difficulty and problems in conventional drug discovery methods that generally deal with one predetermined target are considered. The building blocks used for the present libraries were selected based on previous results in development of peptidic drugs. Each constituent has the common structure of cyclic form prepared by disulfide of cysteinyl residues or thioether linkages, additionally a methionine residue was inserted for the site-specific rapid cleavage by cyanogen bromide to liberate the immobilized peptides allowing reliable characterization by MALDI-TOF-MS/MS without LC-purification. Thus, a high throughput construction method for cyclic peptide libraries as well as characterization of single bead are proposed for drug discovery.

BACKGROUND: Dextromethorphan is a prevalent antitussive agent that can be easily obtained as an over-the-counter medication. There has been a growing number of reported cases of toxicity in recent years. Generally, there are numerous instances of mild symptoms, with only a limited number of reports of severe cases necessitating intensive care. We presented the case of a female who ingested 111 tablets of dextromethorphan, leading to shock and convulsions and requiring intensive care that ultimately saved her life. CASE SUMMARY: A 19-year-old female was admitted to our hospital via ambulance, having overdosed on 111 tablets of dextromethorphan (15 mg) obtained through an online importer in a suicide attempt. The patient had a history of drug abuse and multiple self-inflicted injuries. At the time of admission, she exhibited symptoms of shock and altered consciousness. However, upon arrival at the hospital, the patient experienced recurrent generalized clonic convulsions and status epilepticus, necessitating tracheal intubation. The convulsions were determined to have been caused by decreased cerebral perfusion pressure secondary to shock, and noradrenaline was administered as a vasopressor. Gastric lavage and activated charcoal were also administered after intubation. Through systemic management in the intensive care unit, the patient's condition stabilized, and the need for vasopressors ceased. The patient regained consciousness and was extubated. The patient was subsequently transferred to a psychiatric facility, as suicidal ideation persisted. CONCLUSION: We report the first case of shock caused by an overdose of dextromethorphan.

Uterine leiomyomas are smooth-muscle tumors originating in the myometrium and are the most common pelvic tumors in women of reproductive age. Symptomatic tumors may result in abnormal uterine bleeding, bladder dysfunction, pelvic discomfort, and reproductive issues, such as infertility and miscarriage. There are currently few non-invasive treatments for leiomyoma, but there are no practical early intervention or preventive methods. In this study, human uterine leiomyoma and myometrial tissues were used to detect the protein and mRNA expression levels of UCHL1. To explore the effects of UCHL1 knockdown and inhibition in leiomyoma and myometrial cells, we determined the mRNA expressions of COL1A1 and COL3A1. Collagen gel contraction and wound-healing assays were performed on myometrial and leiomyoma cells. We found that UCHL1 expression was considerably higher in uterine leiomyomas than in the myometrium. COL1A1 and COL3A1 expression levels were downregulated after inhibition of UCHL1 in human leiomyoma cells. Furthermore, the elimination of UCHL1 significantly decreased the migration and contractility of leiomyoma cells. In conclusion, these results indicate that UCHL1 is involved in the growth of leiomyoma in humans. For the treatment of uterine leiomyoma, targeting UCHL1 activity may be a unique and possible therapeutic strategy.

Although vitamin D (VD; serum 25 hydroxyvitamin D) deficiency (< 20 ng/mL) is widespread among Japanese women, the VD status among pregnant women is unknown. This study aimed to determine the VD status of pregnant Japanese women during different meteorological seasons and to determine the factors controlling VD status. A total of 309 pregnant Japanese women were recruited at 28 weeks of gestation at the gynecology department of a university hospital in Tokyo between August 2018 and October 2019. Blood samples were collected to measure serum 25(OH)D levels. Two questionnaires were completed: a brief self-administered dietary history questionnaire (BDHQ) and an outdoor exposure history questionnaire to determine skin sunlight exposure and the use of sunscreen. Among the recruited subjects, 268 were included in the statistical analysis. The average VD intake from food was 9.0 µg/day, the average VD synthesis from UV-B was 15.2 µg/day, and the average sum of VD intake and nominal VD synthesis was 24.1 µg/day; this exceeded the recommended 2011 Dietary Reference Intake for the USA and Canada (15.0 µg/day). However, the average serum 25(OH)D level (11.4 ng/mL) was very low, indicating widespread VD deficiency. Serum 25(OH)D and VD synthesis by solar UV-B were significantly correlated only during the high UV-B season. The 25(OH)D level was weakly correlated with the VD intake from food in all seasons. We obtained a statistically significant correlation between serum 25(OH)D level and VD intake from food using the BDHQ. We also obtained a statistically significant correlation between the serum 25(OH)D level and VD synthesis from solar UV-B exposure, especially during the high UV-B season. Our logistic regression analysis model predicted VD deficiency in 88.0% of subjects. Our method might be possible to be used to predict the VD status of pregnant Japanese women, although another validation cohort is needed to verify the ability of the estimation equation.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Hypoxia, which occurs during the development of cervical cancer, confers chemotherapy resistance. MicroRNA expression is regulated by hypoxia and is associated with the onset and progression of certain types of cancer. MicroRNA-100 (miR-100) is a microRNA, associated with nasopharyngeal and oral squamous cell carcinomas, whose expression is decreased in cervical cancer. This study aims to ascertain the effect of hypoxia on expression levels of both miR-100 and its target genes, as well as exploring the sensitivity to paclitaxel under hypoxic conditions. Methods: We investigated the effect of hypoxia on miR-100 expression. We also explored the regulators of paclitaxel response under hypoxic conditions of cervical cancer. Results: Using RT-qPCR, we found that expression of miR-100 in cervical cancer cell lines SiHa and HeLa is significantly higher under hypoxic conditions (1% O2). We also confirmed that human ubiquitin-specific protease 15 (USP15) is the one of the target proteins of miR-100. Hypoxia and overexpression of miR-100 both reduced the activity of the luciferase reporter containing the 3'-untranslated region of USP15, which contains the miR-100 binding site. Furthermore, a western blot analysis showed that hypoxia suppresses the expression of the USP15 protein, while RT-qPCR showed hypoxia-induced downregulation of USP15 mRNA levels. We also discovered that overexpression of miR-100 induces paclitaxel resistance, thereby reducing the drug's therapeutic effect on cell death. Conclusions: Our results are consistent with the hypothesis that cervical cancer cells overexpress miR-100 in response to hypoxia and that miR-100 is a facilitator of USP15 downregulation and inactivation.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Pharyngolaryngectomy with total esophagectomy (PLTE) is associated with high morbidity and mortality rates. Cervical tracheostomy (CT) is the first choice of tracheostomy, whereas anterior mediastinal tracheostomy (AMT) is sometimes required due to tumor extension or insufficient blood supply to the tracheal tip. However, the differences in the outcomes between CT and AMT after PLTE remain unclear. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 67 patients who underwent PLTE and compared the clinical features and postoperative complications between patients with CT and AMT. The characteristics and the outcomes were compared between the groups stratified by the causes of AMT. RESULTS: Of the 67 patients, 42 (62.7%) patients underwent PLTE with CT (CT group), whereas 25 (37.3%) underwent PLTE with AMT (AMT group). The AMT group included more cervicothoracic esophageal cancers and had showed an advanced T stage compared to the CT group (P < .01 and .01, respectively). The incidences of pneumonia and surgical site infection (SSI) were more frequent in the AMT group than in the CT group (P = .03 and .01, respectively). Surgery-related mortality was only observed in the AMT group. In the AMT group, 17 (68.0%) and 8 (32.0%) patients underwent AMT because of tumor extension and insufficient supply to the tracheal tip. The latter cases underwent transthoracic esophagectomy more frequently than former cases (P = .03). CONCLUSION: AMT after PLTE had more postoperative complications and mortality than CT. In cases that may need AMT, a transhiatal approach is preferable over transthoracic esophagectomy to avoid fatal complications when oncologically permissive.

ABSTRACT

The case was a 70-year-old man of highly advanced gastric cancer with 2 liver metastases(S3, S8)and pancreatic invasion. Three courses of S-1 plus L-OHP(SOX therapy)were performed, and total gastrectomy and combined resection of the spleen and body and tail of the pancreas and partial resection of the liver S3 and S8 were performed after reduction of primary tumor and liver metastasis. S-1 therapy was continued for 1 year as postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy. Left adrenal metastasis was detected by CT, 1 year and 6 months after the operation. PET-CT revealed no other areas suspected of recurrence, so left adrenalectomy was performed through the retroperitoneal space. Radical resection was not achieved because adhesions and scarring from the previous surgery were severe. Paclitaxel plus Ramucirumab was started and after 10 courses, the disappearance of the tumor shadow was observed on enhanced CT, and PET-CT. Three years and 3 months after the initial surgery and 1 year and 8 months after resection of adrenal metastasis, the patient is alive without recurrence.

ABSTRACT

Using gold nanoparticles (GNPs) in high-standard applications requires GNPs to be fabricated with high-quality size and surface properties. Plasma-liquid interactions (PLIs) have the unique ability to synthesize GNPs without using any reducing agents, and the GNP surface is free of stabilizing agents. It is an extreme advantage that ensures success for the subsequent functionalization processes for GNPs. However, fabricating GNPs via PLIs at the desired size has still been a challenge. Here, we present a simple approach to achieving the precise size-control of GNPs synthesized by PLIs. By adding suitable ligands to the precursor solution, the ligands wrap GNPs which interrupts and slows down the rapid growth of GNPs under PLIs. This way, the size of the GNPs can be precisely controlled by adjusting the ligand concentration. Our results showed that the size of the GNPs in the range of 10-60 nm can be fitted to reciprocal functions of the ligand concentration. The potency of the size-control depends on the type of ligands in the order of thiol > amine > carboxylate. The size-control has been well investigated with four common ligands: l-cysteine, glucosamine, salicylic acid, and terephthalic acid. XPS, FTIR, and zeta potential techniques confirmed the presence of these ligands on GNPs. The results indicated that functionalized ligands could be utilized to control the size and functionalize the GNP surface. Hence our approach could simultaneously achieve two goals: precise size-control and functionalization of GNPs without the ligand-exchange step.
