ABSTRACT

The use of plant growth-promoting bacteria as bioinoculants is a powerful tool to increase crop yield and quality and to improve nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) from fertilizers in plants. This study aimed to bioprospecting a native bacterial consortium (Bacillus cabrialesii subsp. cabrialesii TE3T, Priestia megaterium TRQ8, and Bacillus paralicheniformis TRQ65), through bioinformatic analysis, and to quantify the impact of its inoculation on NUE (measured through 15N-isotopic techniques), grain yield, and grain quality of durum wheat variety CIRNO C2008 grown under three doses of urea (0, 120, and 240 kg N ha-1) during two consecutive agricultural cycles in the Yaqui Valley, Mexico. The inoculation of the bacterial consortium (BC) to the wheat crop, at a total N concentration of 123-225 kg N ha-1 increased crop productivity and maintained grain quality, resulting in a yield increase of 1.1 ton ha-1 (6.0 vs. 7.1 ton ha-1, 0 kg N ha-1 added, 123 kg N ha-1 in the soil) and of 2.0 ton ha-1 (5.9 vs. 7.9 ton ha-1, 120 kg N ha-1 added, 104 kg N ha-1 in the soil) compared to the uninoculated controls at the same doses of N. The genomic bioinformatic analysis of the studied strains showed a great number of biofertilization-related genes regarding N and Fe acquisition, P assimilation, CO2 fixation, Fe, P, and K solubilization, with important roles in agroecosystems, as well as genes related to the production of siderophores and stress response. A positive effect of the BC on NUE at the studied initial N content (123 and 104 kg N ha-1) was not observed. Nevertheless, increases of 14 % and 12.5 % on NUE (whole plant) were observed when 120 kg N ha-1 was applied compared to when wheat was fully fertilized (240 kg N ha-1). This work represents a link between bioinformatic approaches of a native bacterial inoculant and the quantification of its impact on durum wheat.

ABSTRACT

A pesticide monitoring study including 80 and 60 active ingredients (in surface waters and sediments, respectively) was carried out in a river basin in Costa Rica during 2007-2012. A special emphasis was given on the exceptional ecological conditions of the tropical agro-ecosystem and the pesticide application strategies in order to establish a reliable monitoring network. A total of 135 water samples and 129 sediment samples were collected and analyzed. Long-term aquatic ecotoxicological risk assessment based on risk quotient in three trophic levels was conducted. Short-term risk assessment was used to calculate the toxic unit and prioritization of sampling sites was conducted by the sum of toxic units in both aquatic and sediment compartments. Dimethoate (61.2 µg/L), propanil (30.6 µg/L), diuron (22.8 µg/L) and terbutryn (4.8 µg/L) were detected at the highest concentrations in water samples. Carbendazim and endosulfan were the most frequently detected pesticides in water and sediment samples, respectively. Triazophos (491 µg/kg), cypermethrin (71.5 µg/kg), permethrin (47.8 µg/kg), terbutryn (38.7 µg/kg), chlorpyrifos (18.2 µg/kg) and diuron (11.75 µg/kg) were detected at the highest concentrations in sediment samples. The pesticides carbendazim, diuron, endosulfan, epoxyconazole, propanil, triazophos and terbutryn showed non-acceptable risk even when a conservative scenario was considered. Sum TUsite higher than 1 was found for one and two sampling sites in water and sediment compartments, respectively, suggesting high acute toxicity for the ecosystem. MAIN FINDING OF THE WORK: Exceptional ecological conditions of the tropical agro-ecosystem affect the fate of pesticides in water and sediment environment differently than the temperate one.

ABSTRACT

Reliable age-at-death estimates from the adult skeleton are of fundamental importance in forensic anthropology, because it contributes to the identity parameters used in a medicolegal death investigation. However, reliable estimates are difficult because many traditional aging methods depend on a set of population-specific criteria derived from individuals of European and African descent. The absence of information on the potential differences in the aging patterns of underrepresented, especially Latinx, populations may hinder our efforts to produce useful age-at-death estimates. In response to these concerns, this study explores the utility of currently available aging techniques and whether population-specific aging methods among Latinx groups are needed. The authors obtained data from two skeletal collections representing modern individuals of Mexican and Puerto Rican origin. They examined five newly developed computational shape-based techniques using 3D laser scans of the pubic symphysis and one traditional bone-to-phase technique. A validation test of all computational and traditional methods was implemented, and new population-specific equations using the computational algorithms were generated and tested against a subsample. Results suggest that traditional and computational aging techniques applied to the pubic symphysis perform best with individuals within 35-45 years of age. Levels of bias and inaccuracy increase as chronological age increases, with overestimation of individuals younger than 35 years and underestimation of individuals older than 45 years. New regression models provided error rates comparable to, and in some occasions outperformed, the original computational models developed on white American males, but age estimates did not significantly improve. This study shows that population-specific models do not necessarily improve age estimates in Latinx samples. Results do suggest that computational methods can ultimately outperform the Suchey-Brooks method and provide improved objectivity when estimating age at death in Latinx samples.

La silicosis es una enfermedad sin tratamiento. El programa de vigilancia de trabajadores expuestos a sílice está diseñado para detectarla lo más precozmente posible mediante una radiografía de tórax. A pesar de su rol fundamental, esta adolece de una gran variabilidad técnica y de interpretación. Para disminuir estos fenómenos, la OIT creó un sistema de clasificación ampliamente usado en Chile y el mundo. Este se basó en la radiografía análoga, la que ha sido reemplazada por el mismo set análogo, digitalizado. Si bien la OIT permite el uso de este nuevo tipo de imagen, indica que el patrón de comparación debe seguir siendo el análogo. Muchos estudios han demostrado que es mejor utilizar patrones de comparación digitales. El objetivo de este trabajo fue generar un set de radiografías digitales que representen las profusiones centrales de opacidades redondas del sistema de clasificación OIT. De un universo de 32.826 radiografías de pacientes expuestos a sílice, se obtuvo 252 radiografías, de las cuales 54 fueron informadas por 3 lectores acreditados, seleccionándose 8 casos que contaban con opacidades redondas puras de diferentes profusiones, las que se proponen como patrón digital para Chile.


Silicosis is a disease without treatment. The surveillance program for workers exposed to silica is designed to detect as early as possible by a chest radiograph. Despite its fundamental role, it suffers from a great technique and interpretation variability. To reduce these phenomena, the ILO created a classification system widely used in Chile and the world. This was based on analog radiography, which has been replaced by the same analog set, digitized. While the ILO permits the use of this new type of image it indicates that the pattern comparison must remain analog. Many studies have shown that it is best to use digital comparison patterns. The objective of this work was to generate a set of digital x-rays representing the central profusion of round opacities of ILO classification system. From a universe of 32,826 x-rays of patients exposed to silica, 252 films, of which 54 were reported for 3 accredited readers, selected 8 cases that had pure round opacities of different profusions was obtained, which are proposed as digital pattern for Chile.

INTRODUCTION: Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of mortality among patients on dialysis. When considering all causes of death, about 30% are classified as cardiac arrest, death of unknown cause or cardiac arrhythmia. The increasing time of ventricular depolarization and repolarization, measured non-invasively by measuring the QT interval on the electrocardiogram at rest, has emerged as a predictor of complex ventricular arrhythmias, a major cause of sudden cardiac death. AIMS: To determine the electrocardiographic alterations present in hemodialysis (HD) patients, measuring the QT interval and its relationship with clinical and laboratory variables. METHODS: Patients above 18 years on dialysis were approached to participate in the study and, after consent, were submitted to the examination of 12-lead electrocardiogram. Clinical data were reviewed to assess the presence of comorbidities, as well as anthropometric and blood pressure measures. Blood samples were collected to determinate hemoglobin and serum levels of calcium, phosphorus and potassium. RESULTS: One hundred and seventy nine patients were included in the study. The majority of the patients were male (64.8%) and white (54.7%); the average age was 58.5 ± 14.7 years old. About 50% of all patients had, at least, one electrical conduction disturb. About 50% of all patients had QTc prolongation and experienced a significant increase in the frequency of Left Ventricular Hypertrophy (LVH), changes of the cardiac rhythm and bundle branch blocks, and a lower body mass index (BMI), when compared with normal QTc interval patients. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) on hemodialysis had high frequency of abnormal electrocardiographic findings, including a high prevalence of patients with prolonged QTc interval. This study also found a significant association between prolonged QTc interval and the presence of Diabetes and lower values of BMI.

INTRODUÇÃO: A doença cardiovascular é a principal causa de mortalidade de pacientes em hemodiálise. Quando consideradas todas as causas de morte, aproximadamente 30% são classificadas como parada cardíaca, morte de causa desconhecida ou arritmia cardíaca. O prolongamento do tempo de despolarização e repolarização ventriculares, medido pela aferição do intervalo QT no eletrocardiograma de repouso, tem emergido como preditor de arritmias ventriculares complexas, uma importante causa de morte súbita cardíaca. OBJETIVOS: Determinar as alterações eletrocardiográficas presentes em pacientes sob hemodiálise (HD), aferir o intervalo QT e sua relação com variáveis clínicas e laboratoriais. MÉTODOS: Pacientes com idade acima de 18 anos em programa de hemodiálise foram abordados para participarem do estudo, e após anuência, foram submetidos ao exame de eletrocardiograma de 12 derivações. Dados clínicos foram revisados para avaliar a presença de comorbidades, além da aferição de medidas antropométricas e da pressão arterial. Amostras de sangue foram coletadas para determinação da hemoglobina e níveis séricos de cálcio, fósforo e de potássio. RESULTADOS: Cento e setenta e nove pacientes foram incluídos no estudo. A maioria era do sexo masculino (64,8%) e da raça branca (54,7%); a idade média foi de 58,5 ± 14,7 anos. Aproximadamente 50% dos pacientes apresentaram ao menos um distúrbio de condução elétrica. Cerca de 50% apresentaram prolongamento do intervalo QTc e experimentaram aumento significativo na frequência de hipertrofia ventricular esquerda (HVE), alterações do ritmo cardíaco, bloqueios de ramo e mais baixos índices de massa corporal (IMC), quando comparados aos pacientes com intervalo QTc normal. CONCLUSÕES: Pacientes com doença renal crônica (DRC) em hemodiálise apresentam elevada frequência de achados eletrocardiográficos anormais, incluindo alta prevalência de pacientes com intervalo QTc prolongado. O presente estudo encontrou, ainda, associação significativa entre o intervalo QTc prolongado com a presença de Diabetes e de valores mais baixos para o IMC.

BACKGROUND: Urinary tract infection (UTI) is frequent among diabetics, especially women. It may be preceded by asymptomatic bacteriuria. AIM: To study the frequency of asymptomatic bacteriuria in type 2 diabetic women. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Fifty women with type 2 diabetes and 50 non diabetic women were studied. In aseptic conditions, morning midstream urine specimens were obtained for microbiological analysis. The test was repeated in similar conditions during consecutive days. Urine samples were cultured in blood agar, Mac Conkey agar and CPS ID 2. Colony forming units were counted. Asymptomatic bacteriuria was defined as the presence of 100,000 or more colony forming units per ml. Leukocyturia was also quantified. RESULTS: There was microbial growth in 40% of samples from diabetic women and 6% of samples from controls (p < 0.01). Asymptomatic bacteriuria was present in 32% of diabetics and 4% of controls (p < 0.01). E Coli was the most frequently isolated strain, in 55% of patients and 100% of controls. Klebsiella pneumoniae was isolated in 10% of diabetics, coagulase negative Staphylococcus in 10%, Enterococcus spp in 10% and Pseudomonas aeruginosa in 5%. Leukocyturia of more than 10 cells per field, was present in 80% of diabetic women with positive culture. Women with positive cultures had a longer lasting diabetes than those with negative cultures. There was no association between urine microbiological results and glycosilated hemoglobin, fasting blood glucose, chronic complications of diabetes and treatment received. CONCLUSIONS: This study shows a high prevalence of asymptomatic bacteriuria among diabetic women.

ABSTRACT

Se llevó a cabo un estudio prospectivo en 10 consultorios pertenecientes a la policlínica "Armando García" de Santiago de Cuba, en el que analizaron los aspectos bioéticos que deben tener en cuenta el médico y la enfermera de la familia en el ingreso domiciliario, el cual abarcó desde diciembre de 1995 hasta igual mes de 1996. Se aplicó una encuesta a los 26 pacientes ingresados con esta modalidad de atención, cuyo grupo mayoritario estuvo integrado por menores de 1 año y los de 61 a 80 años. Las visitas domiciliarias se efectuaron con la frecuencia requerida de acuerdo con la prioridad del grupo y afección presentada. Mediante la encuesta realizada al personal médico y de enfermería, se comprobó que sólo el 36 (por ciento) posee conocimientos sobre los aspectos bioéticos, adquiridos por medio de la literatura especializada, conversatorios y conferencias(AU)


A prospective study was carried out in 10 physicians' offices of "Armando García" polyclinics in Santiago de Cuba, with the aim of analyzing the bioethical aspects that the family physicians and nurses should take into consideration in the home care situation. The study covered from December 1995 to December 1996. The twenty-six patients who were provided home care were surveyed. The majority was composed by 61-80 y age group and under one-year olds. Home visits were paid at required frequency according to the priority given to the group and the disease. The survey made among the medical and nursing staff proved that only 36 percent of them has adequate level of knowledge on the bioethical aspects, knowledge acquired mainly from specialized literature, talks and conferences(AU)
