Objective: To clarify the association between dementia knowledge and attitudes, lifestyle backgrounds, and practical training experiences of nursing students, and examine the basic nursing education for dementia. Participants and Methods: A total of 412 first-to-fourth-year students at Nursing College A participated in the study. A cross-sectional survey was conducted regarding knowledge (15 questions) and attitudes (15 questions) related to dementia. Results: Consent was obtained from 158 individuals (The response rate was 38.3%). Significant items regarding dementia attitudes and cohabitation experiences were identified. Additionally, significant items regarding attitude toward dementia and care providing experiences were identified. Conclusion: Associations among attitude toward dementia, cohabitation experiences, and care providing experiences were determined. Knowledge and attitudes regarding dementia improved with practical training experience.

ABSTRACT: Tanji, F, Ohnuma, H, Ando, R, Yamanaka, R, Ikeda, T, and Suzuki, Y. Longer ground contact time is related to a superior running economy in highly trained distance runners. J Strength Cond Res 38(5): 985-990, 2024-Running economy is a key component of distance running performance and is associated with gait parameters. However, there is no consensus of the link between the running economy (RE), ground contact time, and footstrike patterns. Thus, this study aimed to clarify the relationship between RE, ground contact time, and thigh muscle cross-sectional area (CSA) in highly trained distance runners and to compare these parameters between 2 habitual footstrike patterns (midfoot vs. rearfoot). Seventeen male distance runners ran on a treadmill to measure RE and gait parameters. We collected the CSAs of the right thigh muscle using a magnetic resonance imaging scanner. The RE had a significant negative relationship with distance running performance ( r = -0.50) and ground contact time ( r = -0.51). The ground contact time had a significant negative relationship with the normalized CSAs of the vastus lateralis muscle ( r = -0.60) and hamstrings ( r = -0.54). No significant differences were found in RE, ground contact time, or normalized CSAs of muscles between midfoot ( n = 10) and rearfoot ( n = 7) strikers. These results suggest that large CSAs of knee extensor muscles results in short ground contact time and worse RE. The effects of the footstrike pattern on the RE appear insignificant, and the preferred footstrike pattern can be recommended for running in highly trained runners.

INTRODUCTION: While there may be differences in the choice of suicide methods between attempters with and those without a history of psychiatric disorders, it is not clear whether these differences predict the actual degree of physical injury. The present study aimed to investigate the association between the history of psychiatric disorder and the degree of physical injury among suicide attempters in a Japanese rural area. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study analyzing secondary data of 806 suicide attempters from April 2012 to March 2022 obtained from a Japanese rural city. The exposure variable was a history of psychiatric disorders. The primary outcome was the degree of physical injury of suicide attempters: moderate and severe. We conducted a multivariate Poisson regression analysis to estimate the prevalence ratios (PRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS: Among 806 suicide attempters, a significant negative association between the history of psychiatric disorder and the degree of physical injury was observed (PR = 0.40; 95% CI, 0.28-0.59). Those with and without psychiatric disorders were more likely to choose low- and severe-lethality suicide methods such as drug or psychotropic overdoses and hanging or deep wrist injuries, respectively (P < .001). CONCLUSIONS: The present study highlights the importance of considering suicide attempters, both with and without psychiatric disorders, while formulating targeted suicide prevention strategies.

Preexercise high-fat meal following carbohydrate loading attenuates glycogen utilization during endurance exercise in male recreational runners. J Strength Cond Res 37(3): 661-668, 2023-This study aimed to investigate whether one preexercise high-fat meal can increase glycogen conservation during endurance exercise, as compared with one preexercise high-carbohydrate meal. Ten young male recreational runners (22.0 ± 0.6 years; 171.3 ± 0.9 cm; 58.3 ± 1.9 kg; maximal oxygen uptake [V̇ o2 max], 62.0 ± 1.6 ml·kg -1 ·min -1 ) completed 2 exercise trials after high-carbohydrate loading: eating a high-carbohydrate (CHO; 7% protein, 13% fat, 80% carbohydrate) meal or eating a high-fat (FAT; 7% protein, 42% fat, 52% carbohydrate) meal 3.5 hours before exercise. The order of the 2 trials was randomized, and the interval between trials was at least 1 week. The experimental exercise consisted of running on a treadmill for 60 minutes at 95% of each subject's lactate threshold. Muscle and liver glycogen content were assessed using noninvasive carbon magnetic resonance spectroscopy before the experimental meal as well as before and after exercise; respiratory gases were measured continuously during exercise. The respiratory exchange ratio during exercise was statistically lower in the FAT trial than in the CHO trial ( p < 0.01). In addition, muscle ( p < 0.05) and liver ( p < 0.05) glycogen utilization during exercise was less in the FAT trial than in the CHO trial. Therefore, one high-fat meal following carbohydrate loading reduced muscle and liver glycogen use during the 60-minute exercise. These results suggest that this dietary approach may be applied as a strategy to optimize energy utilization during endurance exercise.

Long-distance runners require aerobic capacity as well as sprinting ability for superior performance; however, the factors which determine the sprinting ability of long-distance runners remain undetermined. Therefore, the purpose of our study was to examine the association between thigh muscle size and sprinting ability in national-level male long-distance runners. Nineteen male long-distance runners with 5000 m personal-best times of 13:12.63-14:14.87 participated in this study, and transaxial images of their right thighs were collected using magnetic resonance imaging. The cross-sectional areas of the quadriceps femoris, hamstrings, and adductor muscles were calculated from the transaxial images at 30%, 50%, and 70% of the distance from the greater trochanter to the lower edge of the femur; these areas were normalized by body mass. Sprint times for 100 m and 400 m were recorded on an all-weather track. The results revealed positive correlations between the normalized cross-sectional areas of the quadriceps femoris at 50% and 70% of the thigh length and the 100 m (r = 0.666, p = 0.002 and r = 0.531, p = 0.019, respectively) and 400 m sprint times (r = 0.769, p < 0.001 and r = 0.580, p = 0.009, respectively); hence, the larger the quadriceps, the slower the sprint speed. However, no association was found between the normalized cross-sectional areas of the hamstrings or adductor muscles and sprinting performance. Therefore, running motions which activate the quadriceps femoris much more than the hamstrings and adductor muscles should be avoided by national-level long-distance runners.

BACKGROUND: Our study examined the association between social participation and healthy aging using a community-based cohort study among Japanese older adults. METHODS: This prospective study was conducted in Ohsaki City, Japan, and included 7226 participants aged ≥65 years at the baseline survey in 2006. We obtained information on frequency of participation in 3 types of community activities (ie, neighborhood activities, hobbies, and volunteer activities) at baseline. Exposure was measured by the number of types of community activities participated in and participants were categorized into 4 groups (ie, none, 1 type, 2 types, and 3 types). The primary outcome was healthy aging as assessed by a questionnaire survey conducted in 2017, and was defined as meeting the following 4 criteria: free of disability, free of depression, high health-related quality of life, and high life satisfaction. We used multiple logistic regression models to calculate the corresponding odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals. RESULTS: During 11 years of follow-up, 574 (7.9%) participants attained healthy aging. Compared with participants not participating in any activity, the multivariable-adjusted odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) were 1.90 (1.40, 2.59) for those participating in 1 type, 2.49 (1.84, 3.38) for 2 types, and 3.06 (2.30, 4.07) for 3 types (p for trend < .0001). Furthermore, for each type of community activity, a higher frequency of participation was related to higher probability of healthy aging. CONCLUSIONS: Our study suggests that social participation is associated with the promotion of healthy aging, and that the benefits were observed across different types of community activities.

AIM: Maintaining ≥20 teeth is a public health goal worldwide. Healthy aging, which includes psychological and social well-being, as well as physical indicators, has attracted a great deal of attention with the progression of aging societies. However, no studies have examined the association between the number of remaining teeth and healthy aging. This study aimed to investigate the association between the number of remaining teeth and healthy aging. METHODS: This community-based longitudinal cohort study included 8300 Japanese people aged ≥65 years who were free of disability and depression in the baseline survey in 2006. The participants were categorized into four groups according to the number of remaining teeth at baseline: 0-9, 10-19, 20-24 and ≥25. The primary outcome was healthy aging (defined as meeting all four of the following criteria: free of disability, free of depression, high health-related quality of life and high life satisfaction), as assessed by a questionnaire survey carried out in 2017. Multiple logistic regression was used to calculate the corresponding odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals. RESULTS: During about 11 years of follow-up, 621 (7.5%) participants attained healthy aging. Participants with ≥20 remaining teeth showed a higher healthy aging rate. Compared with participants with 0-9 teeth, the multivariate-adjusted odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) for 10-19, 20-24 and ≥25 teeth were 0.98 (0.77-1.26), 1.28 (1.01-1.63) and 1.59 (1.24-2.03), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that maintaining ≥20 teeth was associated with healthy aging. Geriatr Gerontol Int 2022; 22: 68-74.

It has been suggested that glycogen functions not only in carbohydrate energy storage, but also as molecular sensors capable of activating lipolysis. This study aimed to compare the variation in liver and muscle glycogen during the day due to different timing of exercise. Nine healthy young men participated in two trials in which they performed a single bout of exercise at 70% of their individual maximal oxygen uptake for 60 min in the post-absorptive (morning) or post-prandial (afternoon) state. Liver and muscles glycogen levels were measured using carbon magnetic resonance spectroscopy (13C MRS). Diurnal variations in liver and muscle glycogen compared to baseline levels were significantly different depending on the timing of exercise. The effect of the timing of exercise on glycogen fluctuation is known to be related to a variety of metabolic signals, and the results of this study will be useful for future research on energy metabolism.

Little is known about psychological distress and its associated factors during the COVID-19 pandemic among nursing students, especially during the initial spread. The present study aimed to investigate the prevalence of psychological distress among Japanese nursing students after the first semester of 2020 with shifted classes and practice online. Furthermore, we examined whether factors such as health issues and resilience were associated with psychological distress. The data were obtained from a cross-sectional, self-administered questionnaire survey at a Japanese nursing college from September to November 2020 (n = 289). We collected data such as sociodemographic variables, medical history, insomnia, and resilience (Bidimensional Resilience Scale). Psychological distress was measured using the K6 scale (scores ≥ 5). The prevalence of psychological distress was 58.5%. The multivariate Poisson regression analysis found a negative association between innate resilience factors, and positive associations between medical history, insomnia, and psychological distress. The present study showed that more than half of the study participants experienced high levels of psychological distress. Our results suggest the importance of monitoring mental health among nursing students, focusing not only on health issues, but also personality components such as innate resilience during the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic.

Objective: Medical science students, especially nursing students, are more likely to experience academic stress; therefore, resilience helps them focus on their lessons attentively. However, the results of a few existing studies regarding how resilience impacts the academic performance of medical science students are incongruent. This study aimed to investigate whether resilience impacts the academic performance of Japanese nursing students. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional, self-administered questionnaire survey from September to November 2020. A total of 229 undergraduate nursing students participated in this study; here, resilience was measured using the Bidimensional Resilience Scale, which includes innate factors (optimism, control, sociability, and vitality) and acquired factors (problem-solving, self-understanding, and understanding others). Academic performance was measured using the functional grade point average (f-GPA). Covariates were demographics, pre-entry academic performance levels, medical history, time spent walking, psychological distress, subjective economic status, and part-time jobs. Multivariate regression analyses were performed. Results: Among the 229 participants, the f-GPA mean (standard deviation) was 2.93 (0.46). Only vitality was significantly associated with a higher f-GPA after multiple imputations (ß = 0.06; 95% confidence interval = 0.03-0.09; P<0.01). The Poisson regression analysis of 212 participants with all data indicated that vitality was associated with the fourth quartile f-GPA (prevalence ratio, 1.05; 95% confidence interval, 1.03-1.08; P<0.01). Conclusion: There was a significant association between the vitality of resilience components and academic performance among Japanese nursing students. This study suggests that an approach that develops resilience is necessary for the academic success of nursing students.

BACKGROUND: We previously reported that psychological distress was associated with an increased risk of functional disability. However, the mechanism of the association remains unclear. Our aim was to estimate the mediating effect of lifestyle and bodily pain on the association among elderly survivors after the Great East Japan Earthquake. METHODS: The study population comprised 1037 residents aged ≥ 65 years. The baseline surveys (exposure and mediators) were conducted in 2011. We classified participants into three categories according to their Kessler 6 score (low: 0-9, moderate: 10-12, and high: 13-24) and defined functional disability as certification for long-term care insurance in Japan. The Cox proportional hazards model was used to calculate the hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for incident functional disability according to Kessler 6 categories and explored the mediating effects of lifestyle and bodily pain on the association. RESULTS: During approximately 8 years of follow-up, we documented 271 incident cases of functional disability. Compared with those in the low distress group, the multivariate adjusted HR for incident functional disability was 1.95 (95% CI 1.21-3.13) for those in the high distress group. Time spent walking, going out, and bodily pain significantly mediated the association between psychological distress and incident functional disability by 10.2%, 10.5%, and 10.3% for the high distress group, respectively. LIMITATIONS: We did not consider unmeasured confounders and use of appropriate medication. CONCLUSIONS: The evaluation and treatment of bodily pain as well as promotion of active lifestyle would be important for preventing disability among disaster survivors.

PURPOSE: This study determined the effect of a single session of sprint interval training in hypoxia on muscle glycogen content among athletes. METHODS: Ten male college track and field sprinters (mean ± standard error of the mean: age, 21.1 ± 0.2 years; height, 177 ± 2 cm; body weight, 67 ± 2 kg) performed two exercise trials under either hypoxia [HYPO; fraction of inspired oxygen (FiO2), 14.5%] or normoxia (NOR: FiO2, 20.9%). The exercise consisted of 3 × 30 s maximal cycle sprints with 8-min rest periods between sets. Before and immediately after the exercise, the muscle glycogen content was measured using carbon magnetic resonance spectroscopy in vastus lateralis and vastus intermedius muscles. Moreover, power output, blood lactate concentrations, metabolic responses (respiratory oxygen uptake and carbon dioxide output), and muscle oxygenation were evaluated. RESULTS: Exercise significantly decreased muscle glycogen content in both trials (interaction, P = 0.03; main effect for time, P < 0.01). Relative changes in muscle glycogen content following exercise were significantly higher in the HYPO trial (- 43.5 ± 0.4%) than in the NOR trial (- 34.0 ± 0.3%; P < 0.01). The mean power output did not significantly differ between the two trials (P = 0.80). The blood lactate concentration after exercise was not significantly different between trials (P = 0.31). CONCLUSION: A single session of sprint interval training (3 × 30 s sprints) in hypoxia caused a greater decrease in muscle glycogen content compared with the same exercise under normoxia without interfering with the power output.

BACKGROUND: Free fatty acids (FFAs) are an important source of energy, and also serve as signaling molecules to regulate gene expression. Exercise performed in a post-absorptive state, in contrast to that performed in a postprandial state, increases 24-h fat oxidation under an energy-balanced condition. The primary aim of the present study was to clarify whether the effects of exercise on the concentration and composition of plasma FFAs, which may underlie distinct effects of exercise on 24-h fat oxidation, depend on the nutritional state of the individual when performing the exercise. METHODS: Ten healthy young men underwent 3 trials of indirect calorimetry in a metabolic chamber. The subjects performed exercise at 60% of VO2max for 60 min in either a post-absorptive or postprandial state, or remained sedentary without an exercise session (control). All trials were designed to be energy balanced over 24 h. Blood samples were collected immediately before and after exercise. RESULTS: Fat oxidation over 24 h was increased only when exercise was performed in a post-absorptive state (control, 531 ± 60; post-absorptive, 779 ± 70; postprandial, 569 ± 37 kcal/24 h). The increase in the 24-h fat oxidation was related to the magnitude of the transient carbohydrate deficit after exercise. The plasma FFA concentration after exercise was higher in the post-absorptive trial (0.38 ± 0.04) than in the control (0.13 ± 0.01) and postprandial (0.15 ± 0.02 mM) trials. The ratio of unsaturated to saturated (U/S) fatty acids after exercise was higher in the post-absorptive trial (1.76 ± 0.06) than in the control (1.56 ± 0.07) and postprandial (1.53 ± 0.08) trials. On the other hand, the plasma FFA concentration after exercise in a postprandial state did not differ significantly from that in the control trial. CONCLUSION: Exercise performed in a post-absorptive state effectively increased the plasma FFA concentration and U/S ratio to a greater degree than exercise performed in a postprandial state, underlying the increase in the 24-h fat oxidation. The increase in the plasma FFA concentration was related to the transient carbohydrate deficit after exercise.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of a financial incentive on the number of daily walking steps among community-dwelling adults in Japan. STUDY DESIGN: Two-arm, parallel-group randomised controlled trial. SETTING/PARTICIPANTS: We recruited physically inactive community-dwelling adults from Sendai city, Japan. Eligible participants were randomly allocated to an intervention or a wait list control group. Pedometers were used to assess the mean number of daily steps in three periods: baseline (weeks 1-3), intervention (weeks 4-6) and follow-up (weeks 7-9). INTERVENTION: The intervention group was offered a financial incentive (shopping points) to meet the target number of increased daily steps in the intervention period. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The primary outcome was an increase in the mean number of daily steps in the intervention and follow-up periods compared with baseline. RESULTS: Seventy-two participants (69.4% women; mean age, 61.2±16.2 years; mean number of daily steps at baseline, 6364±2804) were randomised to the intervention (n=36) and control groups (n=36). During the intervention period, the increase in mean daily steps was significantly higher in the intervention group (1650, 95% CI=1182 to 2119) than in the control group (514, 95% CI=136 to 891; p<0.001). However, the difference between groups was not significant at follow-up after the incentives were removed (p=0.311). In addition, compared with controls, a significantly higher proportion of participants in the intervention group showed an increase in mean daily steps of ≥1000 (69.4% vs 30.6%, respectively; OR=5.17, 95% CI=1.89 to 14.08). There were no adverse effects from the intervention. CONCLUSIONS: The present results suggest that financial incentives are effective in promoting short-term increases in physical activity. With population aging, an increasing attention has been paid to quality of life rather than mere longevity. Now, it is urgently needed to clarify predictors of well-being in later life, i.e., "successful aging (SA)." The aim of this study is to investigate whether the number of remaining teeth impacts on maintenance of SA among Japanese older people. The present study was conducted in Tsurugaya district, a suburban area of Sendai, in northern Japan, and included older people aged ≥ 70 years who had met the criteria for SA at a 2003 baseline survey. At the baseline survey, dentists obtained data for the number of remaining teeth. We obtained information about Long-term Care Insurance certification, including the dates of incident functional disability and death between 2003 and 2012. Data pertaining to health-related quality of life (HRQOL) were collected at the 2003 baseline survey and the 2012 follow-up survey. Maintenance of SA was defined in terms of survival, disability-free status and high HRQOL in both 2003 and 2012. Among 450 participants, 108 (24.0%) were considered to have maintained a state of SA. When participants were classified into three groups according to previous studies, in comparison with participants who retained 0-9 teeth, the multivariate prevalence ratios (95% confidence intervals) were 1.39 (0.81-2.36) for those who retained 10-19 teeth and 1.58 (1.002-2.50) for those who retained ≥ 20 teeth (p trend = 0.046). The present results suggest that retaining ≥ 20 teeth is associated with maintenance of SA among Japanese older people.

Objective: Although it is well known that smoking is a risk factor for subarachnoid hemorrhage, the association between smoking and unruptured intracranial aneurysms remains unclear. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether smoking status was associated with unruptured intracranial aneurysms among Japanese brain health check-up examinees. Materials and Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 1,496 adults (aged 26-90 years) undergoing brain health check-ups at a single community medical support hospital in Akita, Japan between 2009 and 2013. In Japan, people can discretionarily undergo a brain health check-up for early detection of unruptured intracranial aneurysms or subarachnoid hemorrhages. Participants responded to a questionnaire on lifestyle, such as smoking status, and were classified into three groups: never, former, and current smoker. The evaluation of unruptured intracranial aneurysms detected by magnetic resonance angiography was performed by an expert physician. Multiple logistic regression models were used to estimate the odds ratio for unruptured intracranial aneurysms. We performed statistical analyses by age, sex, and family history of stroke. Results: The number of participants with unruptured intracranial aneurysms was 43 (2.9%). The mean age (standard deviation) and proportion of males was 55.8 (9.5) years and 53.3%, respectively. The adjusted odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) for unruptured intracranial aneurysms of 1.21 (0.48-3.08) among former smokers and 2.88 (1.10-7.50) among current smokers were compared to those of never smokers (p-trend = 0.041). After stratifying by age, sex, and family history of stroke, no interactions were found. Conclusion: This cross-sectional study conducted in Japan showed that smoking was positively associated with unruptured intracranial aneurysms among brain health check-up examinees.

BACKGROUND: A growing number of epidemiology studies have shown that poor oral health is associated with an increased incidence of functional disability. However, there are few studies in which the confounding bias is adjusted appropriately. In this study, we examined whether dental status is associated with functional disability in elderly Japanese using a 13-year prospective cohort study after elimination of confounding factors with propensity score matching. METHODS: Participants were community-dwelling Japanese aged 70 years or older who lived in the Tsurugaya district of Sendai (n = 838). The number of remaining teeth (over 20 teeth vs 0-19 teeth) was defined as the exposure variable. The outcome was the incidence of functional disability, defined as the first certification of long-term care insurance (LTCI) in Japan. The variables that were used to determine propensity score matching were age, sex, body mass index (BMI), medical history (stroke, hypertension, myocardial infarction, cancer, and diabetes), smoking, alcohol consumption, educational attainment, depression symptoms, cognitive impairment, physical function, social support, and marital status. RESULTS: As a result of the propensity score matching, 574 participants were selected. Participants with 0-19 teeth were more likely to develop functional disability than those with 20 or more teeth (hazard ratio 1.33; 95% confidence interval, 1.01-1.75). CONCLUSIONS: In this prospective cohort study targeting community-dwelling older adults in Japan, having less than 20 teeth was confirmed to be an independent risk factor for functional disability even after conducting propensity score matching. This study supports previous publications showing that oral health is associated with functional disability.

PURPOSE: Increases in maximal oxygen uptake (V˙O2max) and running economy improve performance in long-distance runners. Nevertheless, long-distance runners require sprinting ability to win, especially in the final phase of competitions. The authors determined the relationships between performance and sprinting ability, as well as other abilities in elite long-distance runners. METHODS: The subjects were 12 elite long-distance runners. Mean official seasonal best times in 5000-m (5000 m-SB) and 10,000-m (10,000 m-SB) races within 1 year before or after the examination were 13:58.5 (0:18.7) and 28:37.9 (0:25.2) (mean [SD]), respectively. The authors measured 100-m and 400-m sprint times as the index of sprinting ability. They also measured V˙O2max and running economy (V˙O2 at 300 m·min-1 of running velocity). They used a single correlation analysis to assess relationships between 5000 m-SB or 10,000 m-SB and other elements. RESULTS: There were significant correlations between 5000 m-SB was significantly correlated with 100-m sprint time (13.3 [0.7] s; r = .68, P = .014), 400-m sprint time (56.6 [2.7] s; r = .69, P = .013), and running economy (55.5 [3.9] mL·kg-1·min-1; r = .59, P = .045). There were significant correlations between 10,000 m-SB and 100-m sprint time (r = .72, P = .009) and 400-m sprint time (r = .85, P < .001). However, there was no significant correlation between 5000 m-SB or 10,000 m-SB and V˙O2max (72.0 [3.8] mL·kg-1·min-1). CONCLUSIONS: The authors' data suggest that sprinting ability is an important indicator of performance in elite long-distance runners.

OBJECTIVE: Personality traits have been associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality as well as life-style-related cardiovascular risk factors. However, the mediating effects of life-style behaviors in the association between personality factors and CVD mortality remain insufficiently understood. The aim of the present study was to examine the mediating effect of life-style behaviors on the association between personality traits and CVD mortality. METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study of 29,766 Japanese adults aged 40 to 64 years at the baseline and followed them up for 20.8 years from 1990 to 2011. Personality was measured using the Japanese version of the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire - Revised Short Form in 1990. We estimated the multivariable hazard ratio and 95% confidence interval for CVD mortality using Cox proportional hazards models, and explored the mediating effects of life-style behaviors (smoking, drinking, body mass index, and time spent walking) on the association between personality traits and CVD mortality. RESULTS: We documented 1033 deaths due to CVD during 562,446 person-years of follow-up. Psychoticism represents tough-mindedness, aggressiveness, coldness, a lack of deliberateness, and egocentricity. After adjusting for confounding variables, higher psychoticism was associated with CVD mortality (base model hazard ratio = 1.36, 95% confidence interval = 1.14-1.61, p trend < .001). All the life-style behaviors together mediated this association by 19.2%, with smoking having the greatest effect at 15.7%. For the other personality traits, no significant associations with CVD mortality were found. CONCLUSION: The present study demonstrated that life-style behaviors, especially smoking, partially mediate the association between psychoticism and CVD mortality.

OBJECTIVES: To assess whether systemic inflammation and nutritional status contribute to a relationship between tooth loss and mortality in community-dwelling older Japanese individuals using mediation analyses. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This longitudinal study targeted community-dwelling older Japanese individuals (N = 891). The exposure variable was the number of teeth (edentulous, 1-9, 10-19, ≥ 20), while the outcome was all-cause mortality from 2003 to 2016. Nutritional status and systemic inflammation were evaluated as mediators and based on serum albumin and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein levels, respectively. Covariates included age, sex, smoking, alcohol consumption, medical history, educational level, depressive symptoms, cognitive impairment, and physical function. The Cox proportional hazards model was applied to calculate hazard ratios (HRs) for the association between tooth loss and mortality and the contributions of systemic inflammation and nutritional status to this association. RESULTS: Edentulous participants (HR, 1.84; 95 % confidence interval [CI], 1.30-2.59) and those with 1-9 teeth (HR, 1.75; 95% CI, 1.28-2.40) groups exhibited a significantly higher risk of mortality than did those with ≥ 20 teeth. Mediation analyses showed that nutritional status contributed to the association between tooth loss and mortality in participants with 1-9 teeth, whereas systemic inflammation played no role in this association. CONCLUSIONS: Nutritional status may contribute to the association between tooth loss and mortality in community-dwelling older Japanese individuals with fewer remaining teeth. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The data from this prospective cohort study help in elucidating parts of the biological mechanism underlying tooth loss and all-cause mortality in older individuals.
