ABSTRACT

The goal of this research was to determine the relationship between high levels of calcium in Majorca's water supplies and the prevalence of fractures in schoolchildren. The study was performed during two school terms and was done within the framework of the School Health System. Three towns of Majorca were selected because of the different content of calcium in their water supply. The fluorine content in the tap water was always under 0.5 mg/l. All of the towns have the same social and economic backgrounds. We surveyed 1,308 schoolchildren, between 11 and 14 years of age, about previous fractures. There is a statistically significant relationship between fractures and low calcium levels in the water supply. This association is stronger for children 11 years of age than for children 14 years old.

ABSTRACT

1,350 schoolchildren, ages 11 and 14, from Palma de Mallorca, were explored looking for colour vision defects. The medical examination was performed through Ishihara tables (numbers or letters). There was not anomaloscopy to confirm the first results. We compare our prevalence with other known prevalence from Europe. Different outcomes (learning disability, effect on employment) are discussed.

ABSTRACT

Joint mobility was examined on 1.136 schoolchildren of both sexes at the ages of 11 and 14 years. At the same time, they were asked if they had a history of bone fractures and about their weekly consumption of liver. The results were that 13% of the boys and 21% of the girls had hypermobility of their joints. A description is made of a short test to detect hypermobility. It was found that liver consumption and hypermobility are related, also that only in boys hypermobility is contrarily related with the history of fractures.

ABSTRACT

1,074 children, aged 11 and 14 years, have been examined. Their height and weight was measured, the %BMI was calculated, and the authors have known about performance of tonsillectomy in the past, in each schoolchild. It was found a significant relationship between tonsillectomy and overweight only in the male aged 14 years. A probability that stress after surgery leads to overweight is discussed.
