Social entrepreneurship (SE) plays a positive role in addressing a range of social issues, and thus it is essential to study how to promote SE. Using panel data from 282 Chinese cities from 2011 to 2021, this study explores the mechanism through which digital inclusive finance affects SE. The results indicate that digital inclusive finance has a positive impact on SE, which still holds after considering endogeneity and undergoing a series of robustness tests. In addition, mechanism analysis shows that digital inclusive finance affects SE by alleviating financing constraints and promoting common prosperity. Furthermore, the effect of digital inclusive finance is stronger in cities with a strong Buddhist culture and more judicially civilized. Policy recommendations are also proposed.

Objective: To explore characteristics of clinical parameters and cytokines in patients with drug-induced liver injury (DILI) caused by different drugs and their correlation with clinical indicators. Method: The study was conducted on patients who were up to Review of Uncertainties in Confidence Assessment for Medical Tests (RUCAM) scoring criteria and clinically diagnosed with DILI. Based on Chinese herbal medicine, cardiovascular drugs, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), anti-infective drugs, and other drugs, patients were divided into five groups. Cytokines were measured by Luminex technology. Baseline characteristics of clinical biochemical indicators and cytokines in DILI patients and their correlation were analyzed. Results: 73 patients were enrolled. Age among five groups was statistically different ( P = 0.032). Alanine aminotransferase (ALT) ( P = 0.033) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) ( P = 0.007) in NSAIDs group were higher than those in chinese herbal medicine group. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) in patients with Chinese herbal medicine (IL-6: P < 0.001; TNF-α: P < 0.001) and cardiovascular medicine (IL-6: P = 0.020; TNF-α: P = 0.001) were lower than those in NSAIDs group. There was a positive correlation between ALT ( r = 0.697, P = 0.025), AST ( r = 0.721, P = 0.019), and IL-6 in NSAIDs group. Conclusion: Older age may be more prone to DILI. Patients with NSAIDs have more severe liver damage in early stages of DILI, TNF-α and IL-6 may partake the inflammatory process of DILI.

Traditional methods for the detection of pathogenic bacteria are time-consuming, less efficient, and sensitive, which affects infection control and bungles illness. Therefore, developing a method to remedy these problems is very important in the clinic to diagnose the pathogenic diseases and guide the rational use of antibiotics. Here, microfluidic electrochemical integrated sensor (MEIS) has been investigated, functionally for rapid, efficient separation and sensitive detection of pathogenic bacteria. Three-dimensional macroporous PDMS and Au nanotube-based electrode are successfully assembled into the modeling microchip, playing the functions of "3D chaotic flow separator" and "electrochemical detector," respectively. The 3D chaotic flow separator enhances the turbulence of the fluid, achieving an excellent bacteria capture efficiency. Meanwhile, the electrochemical detector provides a quantitative signal through enzyme-linked immunoelectrochemistry with improved sensitivity. The microfluidic electrochemical integrated sensor could successfully isolate Candida albicans (C. albicans) in the range of 30-3,000,000 CFU in the saliva matrix with over 95% capture efficiency and sensitively detect C. albicans in 1 h in oral saliva samples. The integrated device demonstrates great potential in the diagnosis of oral candidiasis and is also applicable in the detection of other pathogenic bacteria.

Gallbladder Torsion (GT) refers to serious biliary emergencies caused by the torsion of the gallbladder on its mesentery along the axis of the cystic duct and cystic artery. It is very rare, especially in children. The clinical data of a child with floating gallbladder torsion who was treated in our hospital on March 14, 2024, were analyzed. A 6-year-old girl presented with abdominal pain and vomiting. Physical examination showed a mass in the right middle abdomen. Laboratory tests showed normal liver biochemical function and white blood cells. The benign lesion was considered by color Doppler ultrasound and CT, and the floating torsion of the gallbladder was diagnosed by MRCP and laparoscopic exploration. The child was treated with laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) and recovered well after the operation.

BACKGROUND: The prognostic significance of metastasis-associated in colon cancer-1 (MACC1) has been explored in a variety of malignancies. However, its clinical relevance in patients with gastric cancer (GC) is limited, also remains controversial. METHOD: In this study, we retrospectively evaluated the prognostic value of lesion MACC1 expression in 347 GC patients. Lesion MACC1 expression was analyzed with immunohistochemistry and grouped as MACC1low (n = 172) and MACC1high (n = 175) cases. RESULTS: Data revealed that the degree of MACC1 expression is not related to patient sex, age and disease stage (all p > 0.05). Survival analysis showed that only post-operation advanced pT (p = 0.018), pN (p < 0.001), pM (p = 0.001) and AJCC stages (p < 0.001) are significantly associated with shorter survival, while no obvious difference was observed between MACC1low and MACC1high cases (p = 0.158). However, we found that survival for female (p = 0.032), older (p = 0.028), and early disease stage (pT stage I + II, p = 0.033) patients with MACC1high are remarkably worse than those with MACC1low. CONCLUSION: In summary, our findings revealed that, though MACC1 expression is not associated with the survival of the whole cohort, the prognostic risk stratification value of lesion MACC1 expression in subgroups of patients with gastric cancer should be noted.

Myocardial infarction (MI)-induced impaired cardiomyocyte (CM) mitochondrial function and microenvironmental inflammatory cascades severely accelerate the progression of heart failure for compromised myocardial repair. Modulation of the crosstalk between CM mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and STING has been recently identified as a robust strategy in enhancing MI treatment, but remains seldom explored. To develop a novel approach that can address persistent myocardial injury using this crosstalk, we report herein construction of a biomimetic hydrogel system, Rb1/PDA-hydrogel comprised of ginsenoside Rb1/polydopamine nanoparticles (Rb1/PDA NPs)-loaded carboxylated chitosan, 4-arm-PEG-phenylboronic acid (4-arm-PEG-PBA), and 4-arm-PEG-dopamine (4-arm-PEG-DA) crosslinked networks. An optimized hydrogel formulation presents not only desired adhesion properties to the surface of the myocardium, but also adaptability for deep myocardial injection, resulting in ROS scavenging, CM mitochondrial function protection, M1 macrophage polarization inhibition through the STING pathway, and angiogenesis promotion via an internal-external spatial combination. The enhanced therapeutic efficiency is supported by the histological analysis of the infarcted area, which shows that the fibrotic area of the MI rats decreases from 58.4% to 5.5%, the thickness of the left ventricular wall increases by 1-fold, and almost complete recovery of cardiac function after 28 days of treatment. Overall, this study reported the first use of a strong adhesive and injectable hydrogel with mtDNA and STING signaling characteristics for enhanced MI treatment via an internal-external spatial combination strategy.

This technology promises a paradigm shift in ovarian cancer management, concentrating on targeted drug delivery systems to improve treatment accuracy and efficacy while minimizing adverse effects. Through a meticulous review, this paper evaluates the revolutionary potential of phage display in enhancing ovarian cancer therapy, representing a significant advancement in combating this challenging disease. Phage display technology is heralded as an essential instrument for developing effective immunodiagnostic and therapeutic approaches in ovarian cancer, facilitating early detection, precision-targeted medication, and the implementation of customized treatment plans.

BACKGROUND: The comparative effectiveness of volatile anaesthesia and total intravenous anaesthesia (TIVA) in terms of patient outcomes after cardiac surgery remains a topic of debate. METHODS: Multicentre randomised trial in 16 tertiary hospitals in China. Adult patients undergoing elective cardiac surgery were randomised in a 1:1 ratio to receive volatile anaesthesia (sevoflurane or desflurane) or propofol-based TIVA. The primary outcome was a composite of predefined major complications during hospitalisation and mortality 30 days after surgery. RESULTS: Of the 3123 randomised patients, 3083 (98.7%; mean age 55 yr; 1419 [46.0%] women) were included in the modified intention-to-treat analysis. The composite primary outcome was met by a similar number of patients in both groups (volatile group: 517 of 1531 (33.8%) patients vs TIVA group: 515 of 1552 (33.2%) patients; relative risk 1.02 [0.92-1.12]; P=0.76; adjusted odds ratio 1.05 [0.90-1.22]; P=0.57). Secondary outcomes including 6-month and 1-yr mortality, duration of mechanical ventilation, length of ICU and hospital stay, and healthcare costs, were also similar for the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: Among adults undergoing cardiac surgery, we found no difference in the clinical effectiveness of volatile anaesthesia and propofol-based TIVA. Eleven alkaloids (1-11) including seven new ones, 1-7, were isolated from the solid fermentation of Aspergillus fumigatus VDL36, an endophytic fungus isolated from the leaves of Vaccinium dunalianum Wight (Ericaceae), a perennial evergreen shrub distributed across the Southwest regions of China, Myanmar, and Vietnam. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of extensive spectroscopic methods. The isolates were evaluated for in vitro antifungal activities against five phytopathogenic fungi (Fusarium oxysporum, Coriolus versicolor, Fusarium solani, Botrytis cinerea, Fusarium graminearum). As a result, the new compounds fumigaclavine I (1), 13-ethoxycyclotryprostatin A (5), 13-dehydroxycyclotryprostatin A (6), and 12ß-hydroxy-13-oxofumitremorgin C (7) exhibited antifungal activities with MIC values of 7.8-62.5 µg/mL which were comparable to the two positive controls ketoconazole (MIC = 7.8-31.25 µg/mL) and carbendazim (MIC = 1.95-7.8 µg/mL). Furthermore, compounds 1 and 5 demonstrated potent protective and curative effects against the tomato gray mold in vivo. Preliminary structure-activity relationships of the tested indole diketopiperazine alkaloids indicate that the introduction of a substituent group at position C-13 enhances their biological activities.

Non-digestible oligosaccharides have attracted attention due to their critical role in maintaining the balance of a host's gut microbiota. Lactiplantibacillus plantarum ZDY2013 was isolated from traditional fermented acid beans, which could metabolize many complex carbohydrates and had intestinal immunomodulatory effects. In our study, the ameliorative effect of a combination of non-digestible isomaltooligosaccharide (IMO) and L. plantarum ZDY2013 was investigated in dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis mice. The results showed that IMO could specifically promote L. plantarum ZDY2013 intestinal colonization after five days of gavage and ameliorate the symptoms of colitis (survival rate, DAI score, colon length, etc.) as well as colon tissue integrity. IMO combined with L. plantarum ZDY2013 increased the levels of intestinal tight junction proteins (ZO-1 and claudin) and mucin (MUC-2), followed by alleviation of inflammatory responses (decreased the expression of IL-1ß, TNF-α, and IL-6 and increased the expression of IL-10 and IL-22) and the level of oxidative stress (decreased the level of COX-2 and iNOS and increased the expression of T-AOC and SOD). Furthermore, the combination increased the diversity of the gut microbiota and modulated the microbial structural component (decreased the abundance of Escherichia and Helicobacter and increased the abundance of Lactobacillus and SCFA-producing related species). Taken together, our results suggested that the consumption of IMO and L. plantarum ZDY2013 could improve the symptoms of colitis in mice by improving the intestinal barrier along with regulating the composition and metabolites of the gut microbiota.

Two new cytochalasans, marcytoglobosins A (1) and B (2) were isolated from the marine sponge associated fungus Chaetomium globosum 162105, along with six known compounds (3-8). The complete structures of two new compounds were determined based on 1D/2D NMR and HR-MS spectroscopic analyses coupled with ECD calculations. All eight isolates were evaluated for their antibacterial activity. Among them, compounds 3-8 displayed antibacterial effects against Staphylococcus epidermidis, Bacillus thuringiensis, Pseudomonas syringae pv. Actinidiae, Vibrio alginolyticus, and Edwardsiella piscicida with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values ranging from 10 to 25 µg/mL.

Mechanotransduction is the essential process that cells convert mechanical force into biochemical responses, and electrochemical sensor stands out from existing techniques by providing quantitative and real-time information about the biochemical signals during cellular mechanotransduction. However, the intracellular biochemical response evoked by mechanical force has been poorly monitored. In this paper, we report a method to apply local stretch on single cell and simultaneously monitor the ensuing intracellular biochemical signals. Specifically, a ferromagnetic micropipette was fabricated to locally stretch a single cell labeled with Fe3O4 nanoparticles under the external magnetic field, and the SiC@Pt nanowire electrode (SiC@Pt NWE) was inserted into the cell to monitor the intracellular hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) production induced by the local stretch. As a proof of concept, this work quantitatively investigated the elevated amount of H2O2 levels in single endothelial cell under different stretching amplitudes. This work puts forward a new research modality to manipulate and monitor the mechanotransduction at the single-cell level.

Synaptic plasticity is the ability of synapses to modulate synaptic strength in response to dynamic changes within, as well as environmental changes. Although there is a considerable body of knowledge on protein expression and receptor migration in different categories of synaptic plasticity, the contribution and impact of presynaptic vesicle release and neurotransmitter levels towards plasticity remain largely unclear. Herein, nanoelectrochemistry using carbon fiber nanoelectrodes with excellent spatio-temporal resolution was applied for real-time monitoring of presynaptic vesicle release of dopamine inside single synapses of dopaminergic neurons, and exocytotic variations in quantity and kinetics under repetitive electrical stimuli. We found that the presynaptic terminal tends to maintain synaptic strength by rapidly recruiting vesicles, changing the dynamics of exocytosis, and maintaining sufficient neurotransmitter release in following stimuli. Except for small clear synaptic vesicles, dense core vesicles are involved in exocytosis to sustain the neurotransmitter level in later periods of repetitive stimuli. These data indicate that vesicles use a potential regulatory mechanism to establish short-term plasticity, and provide new directions for exploring the synaptic mechanisms in connection and plasticity.

Curcuma aromatica Salisb (Cur), a well-known herbal medicine, has a wide spectrum of anti-inflammatory, anticarcinogenic, and antioxidant activities. However, the roles of its active compounds and potential mechanisms in colorectal cancer remain unknown. This research utilized network pharmacology and experimental validation to explore the possible mechanisms by which Cur protects against colorectal cancer. The active compounds of Cur and related genes for colorectal cancer were obtained from public databases. The DrugBank database was used to search for anticolorectal cancer drugs licensed through the FDA and their targets, and a "drug-component-target" relationship network was created using the Cytoscape program. The String database produced the PPI network. The ability of these active ingredients to bind to core targets was confirmed by molecular docking using AutoDock Vina. Cell and animal experiments were then carried out. A total of 274 targets were obtained from Cur, 49 of which were potential therapeutic targets. Four key targets, PTGS2, AKT1, TP53, and estrogen receptor 1 (ESR1), were screened via the PPI network and the FDA drug-target network. Molecular docking results revealed that Cur had strong binding abilities to these targets. In vivo and in vitro experiments demonstrated that Cur suppressed the development of colorectal cancer by regulating its targets (PTGS2, AKT1, TP53, and ESR1), which play crucial roles in promoting apoptosis and suppressing cell proliferation, migration, and invasion. Collectively, Cur protects against colorectal cancer by regulating the AKT1/PTGS2/ESR1 and P53 pathways, which lays the groundwork for further research and clinical applications of Cur in colorectal cancer therapy.

BACKGROUND: Gastric cancer (GC) is a common malignancy of the digestive system. According to global 2018 cancer data, GC has the fifth-highest incidence and the third-highest fatality rate among malignant tumors. More than 60% of GC are linked to infection with Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), a gram-negative, active, microaerophilic, and helical bacterium. This parasite induces GC by producing toxic factors, such as cytotoxin-related gene A, vacuolar cytotoxin A, and outer membrane proteins. Ferroptosis, or iron-dependent programmed cell death, has been linked to GC, although there has been little research on the link between H. pylori infection-related GC and ferroptosis. AIM: To identify coregulated differentially expressed genes among ferroptosis-related genes (FRGs) in GC patients and develop a ferroptosis-related prognostic model with discrimination ability. METHODS: Gene expression profiles of GC patients and those with H. pylori-associated GC were obtained from The Cancer Genome Atlas and Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) databases. The FRGs were acquired from the FerrDb database. A ferroptosis-related gene prognostic index (FRGPI) was created using least absolute shrinkage and selection operator-Cox regression. The predictive ability of the FRGPI was validated in the GEO cohort. Finally, we verified the expression of the hub genes and the activity of the ferroptosis inducer FIN56 in GC cell lines and tissues. RESULTS: Four hub genes were identified (NOX4, MTCH1, GABARAPL2, and SLC2A3) and shown to accurately predict GC and H. pylori-associated GC. The FRGPI based on the hub genes could independently predict GC patient survival; GC patients in the high-risk group had considerably worse overall survival than did those in the low-risk group. The FRGPI was a significant predictor of GC prognosis and was strongly correlated with disease progression. Moreover, the gene expression levels of common immune checkpoint proteins dramatically increased in the high-risk subgroup of the FRGPI cohort. The hub genes were also confirmed to be highly overexpressed in GC cell lines and tissues and were found to be primarily localized at the cell membrane. The ferroptosis inducer FIN56 inhibited GC cell proliferation in a dose-dependent manner. CONCLUSION: In this study, we developed a predictive model based on four FRGs that can accurately predict the prognosis of GC patients and the efficacy of immunotherapy in this population.

BACKGROUND: Paradoxically, patients with T4N0M0 (stage II, no lymph node metastasis) colon cancer have a worse prognosis than those with T2N1-2M0 (stage III). However, no previous report has addressed this issue. AIM: To screen prognostic risk factors for T4N0M0 colon cancer and construct a prognostic nomogram model for these patients. METHODS: Two hundred patients with T4N0M0 colon cancer were treated at Tianjin Medical University General Hospital between January 2017 and December 2021, of which 112 patients were assigned to the training cohort, and the remaining 88 patients were assigned to the validation cohort. Differences between the training and validation groups were analyzed. The training cohort was subjected to multivariate analysis to select prognostic risk factors for T4N0M0 colon cancer, followed by the construction of a nomogram model. RESULTS: The 3-year overall survival (OS) rates were 86.2% and 74.4% for the training and validation cohorts, respectively. Enterostomy (P = 0.000), T stage (P = 0.001), right hemicolon (P = 0.025), irregular review (P = 0.040), and carbohydrate antigen 199 (CA199) (P = 0.011) were independent risk factors of OS in patients with T4N0M0 colon cancer. A nomogram model with good concordance and accuracy was constructed. CONCLUSION: Enterostomy, T stage, right hemicolon, irregular review, and CA199 were independent risk factors for OS in patients with T4N0M0 colon cancer. The nomogram model exhibited good agreement and accuracy.

AIM: To gain insights into the global research hotspots and trends of myopia. METHODS: Articles were downloaded from January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2022 from the Science Core Database website and were mainly statistically analyzed by bibliometrics software. RESULTS: A total of 444 institutions in 87 countries published 4124 articles. Between 2013 and 2022, China had the highest number of publications (n=1865) and the highest H-index (61). Sun Yat-sen University had the highest number of publications (n=229) and the highest H-index (33). Ophthalmology is the main category in related journals. Citations from 2020 to 2022 highlight keywords of options and reference, child health (pediatrics), myopic traction mechanism, public health, and machine learning, which represent research frontiers. CONCLUSION: Myopia has become a hot research field. China and Chinese institutions have the strongest academic influence in the field from 2013 to 2022. The main driver of myopic research is still medical or ophthalmologists. This study highlights the importance of public health in addressing the global rise in myopia, especially its impact on children's health. At present, a unified theoretical system is still needed. Accurate surgical and therapeutic solutions must be proposed for people with different characteristics to manage and intervene refractive errors. In addition, the benefits of artificial intelligence (AI) models are also reflected in disease monitoring and prediction.

High workload-induced cellular stress can cause pancreatic islet ß cell death and dysfunction, or ß cell failure, a hallmark of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Thus, activation of molecular chaperones and other stress-response genes prevents ß cell failure. To this end, we have shown that deletion of the glucose-regulated protein 94 (GRP94) in Pdx1+ pancreatic progenitor cells led to pancreas hypoplasia and reduced ß cell mass during pancreas development in mice. Here, we show that GRP94 was involved in ß cell adaption and compensation (or failure) in islets from leptin receptor-deficient (db/db) mice in an age-dependent manner. GRP94-deficient cells were more susceptible to cell death induced by various diabetogenic stress conditions. We also identified a new client of GRP94, insulin-like growth factor-1 receptor (IGF-1R), a critical factor for ß cell survival and function that may mediate the effect of GRP94 in the pathogenesis of diabetes. This study has identified essential functions of GRP94 in ß cell failure related to diabetes.
