ABSTRACT

Background: Pulmonary nodules are small, focal lesions often identified via computed tomography (CT) scans. Although the majority are benign, a small percentage of them may be malignant or potentially become malignant, underscoring the importance of early detection and effective management. This study systematically reviews the epidemiology, risk factors, and management strategies for pulmonary nodules, comparing findings across Chinese and non-Chinese populations to better inform the actuarial calculations for predicting the demand of medical services for patients with pulmonary nodules. Methods: We performed a systematic analysis of the PubMed and China Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) databases for studies reporting the detection rate of pulmonary nodules through CT scans. Both cross-sectional studies and the baseline data from longitudinal studies were included. A modified version of the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale was used to assess the risk of bias and random effect models were used to estimate the overall prevalence. Results: We identified 32 studies and included 24 of them in our meta-analysis. Pooled analysis showed that the overall prevalence of pulmonary nodules was 0.27 (95% confidence interval: 0.25-0.29) after outliers removal. Subgroup analysis showed that there was no significant difference for prevalence between Chinese and non-Chinese populations. Males (0.38) were shown to have slightly higher prevalence compared to females (0.36), but not significant (P=0.88). Age and smoking are the most frequently reported risk factors by studies. Conclusions: Overall, 27% of participants were positive for pulmonary nodules. Advancing age and smoking were consistently identified as a key risk factor for the incidence of pulmonary nodules. Although the management strategies are different across studies, recent guidelines recommend personalized management strategies, prioritizing nodule size, characteristics, and individual risk factors to optimize outcomes.

ABSTRACT

Thyroid cancer, notably papillary thyroid cancer (PTC), is a global health concern with increasing incidence. Anoikis, a regulator of programmed cell death, is pivotal in normal physiology and, when dysregulated, can drive cancer progression and metastasis. This study explored the impact of anoikis on PTC prognosis. Analyzing data from GEO, TCGA, and GeneCards, we identified a prognostic signature consisting of six anoikis-related genes (ARGs): EZH2, PRKCQ, CD36, INHBB, TDGF1, and MMP9. This signature independently predicted patient outcomes, with high-risk scores associated with worse prognoses. A robust predictive ability was confirmed via ROC analysis, and a nomogram achieved a C-index of 0.712. Differences in immune infiltration levels were observed between high- and low-risk groups. Importantly, the high-risk group displayed reduced drug sensitivity and poor responses to immunotherapy. This research provides insights into anoikis in PTC, offering a novel ARG signature for predicting patient prognosis and guiding personalized treatment strategies.

ABSTRACT

Anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides is a destructive disease of Stylosanthes (stylo). Combination treatment of phloretin and pterostilbene (PP) has been previously shown to effectively inhibit the conidial germination and mycelial growth of C. gloeosporioides in vitro. In this study, the effects of PP treatment on the growth of C. gloeosporioides in vivo and the biocontrol mechanisms were investigated. We found that exogenous PP treatment could limit the growth of C. gloeosporioides and alleviate the damage of anthracnose in stylo. Comparative transcriptome analysis revealed that 565 genes were up-regulated and 239 genes were down-regulated upon PP treatment during the infection by C. gloeosporioides. The differentially expressed genes were mainly related to oxidative stress and chloroplast organization. Further physiological analysis revealed that application of PP after C. gloeosporioides inoculation significantly reduced the accumulation of O2•- level and increased the accumulation of antioxidants (glutathione, ascorbic acid and flavonoids) as well as the enzyme activity of total antioxidant capacity, superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione reductase, peroxidase and ascorbate peroxidase. PP also reduced the decline of chlorophyll a + b and increased the content of carotenoid in response to C. gloeosporioides infection. These results suggest that PP treatment alleviates anthracnose by improving antioxidant capacity and reducing the damage of chloroplasts, providing insights into the biocontrol mechanisms of PP on the stylo against anthracnose.

ABSTRACT

The CRISPR/Cas9 system can induce off-target effects in programmed gene editing, but there have been few reports on cleavage detection and their affection in embryo development. To study these events, sgRNAs with different off-target rates were designed and compared after micro-injected into mouse zygotes, and γH2AX was used for DNA cleavage sites analysis by immunostaining and CUT&Tag. Although the low off-target sgRNA were usually selected for production gene editing animals, γH2AX immunofluorescence indicated that there was a relative DSB peak at 15 h after Cas9 system injection, and the number of γH2AX foci at the peak was significantly higher in the low off-target sgRNA-injected group than in the control group. Further, the result of CUT&Tag sequencing analysis showed more double-strand breaks (DSBs) related sequences were detected in low off-target sgRNA-injected group than control and the distribution of DSB related sequences had no chromosome specificity. Gene Ontology (GO) annotation analysis of the DSB related sequences showed that these sequences were mainly concentrated at genes associated with some important biological processes, molecular functions, and cell components. In a conclusion, there are many sgRNA-sequence-independent DSBs in early mouse embryos when the Cas9 system is used for gene editing and the DSB related sequence could be detected and characterized in the genome. These results and method should also be considered in using or optimizing the Cas9 system.

ABSTRACT

Monitoring endogenous glutathione (GSH) levels in living cells is essential for cancer diagnose and treatment. In this work, GSH responsive fluorescent nanoprobe with turn-on property was constructed using Zn-modified porphyrinic metal-organic frameworks (PCN-224-Zn). The introduced Zn2+ could quench the fluorescence of PCN-224 by the metallization of organic ligand (TCPP) and serves as sensing site for GSH. When exposed to GSH, the strong binding affinity of GSH generates the formation of Zn-GSH complex, eliminating the fluorescence quenching effect of Zn2+. Based on the constructed PCN-224-Zn nanoprobe, selective determination of GSH was achieved in the range of 0.01-6 µM with a detection limit of 1.5 nM. Furthermore, the constructed nanoprobe can realize the fluorescence imaging of endogenous GSH in MCF-7 and HeLa cells. Meanwhile, PCN-224-Zn could also monitor GSH in cell lysate with recovery rates from 93.8 % to 102.3 %. The performance of PCN-224-Zn demonstrates its capacities in the application of fluorescence sensing and bio-imaging fields.

ABSTRACT

The largest ever primate and one of the largest of the southeast Asian megafauna, Gigantopithecus blacki1, persisted in China from about 2.0 million years until the late middle Pleistocene when it became extinct2-4. Its demise is enigmatic considering that it was one of the few Asian great apes to go extinct in the last 2.6 million years, whereas others, including orangutan, survived until the present5. The cause of the disappearance of G. blacki remains unresolved but could shed light on primate resilience and the fate of megafauna in this region6. Here we applied three multidisciplinary analyses-timing, past environments and behaviour-to 22 caves in southern China. We used 157 radiometric ages from six dating techniques to establish a timeline for the demise of G. blacki. We show that from 2.3 million years ago the environment was a mosaic of forests and grasses, providing ideal conditions for thriving G. blacki populations. However, just before and during the extinction window between 295,000 and 215,000 years ago there was enhanced environmental variability from increased seasonality, which caused changes in plant communities and an increase in open forest environments. Although its close relative Pongo weidenreichi managed to adapt its dietary preferences and behaviour to this variability, G. blacki showed signs of chronic stress and dwindling populations. Ultimately its struggle to adapt led to the extinction of the greatest primate to ever inhabit the Earth.

ABSTRACT

Stem cells are essential to plant growth and development. Through data mining, we identified five DEVIL-like (DVL) small peptide genes that are preferentially expressed in the quiescent center of Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) root but whose functions are unknown. When overexpressed, these genes caused a dramatic decrease in root length and pleiotropic phenotypes in the shoot. No root-growth defect was observed in the single-gene mutants, but the quintuple mutant exhibited slightly longer roots than the wild type (WT). Through transcriptome analysis with DVL20-overexpressing plants, we found that many genes involved in abscisic acid (ABA) signaling were regulated by these peptides. Consistent with this finding, we demonstrated that, relative to the WT, DVL20-overexpressing plants were more tolerant whereas the quintuple mutant was more sensitive to ABA. Using RT-qPCR, we showed that ABA signaling-associated genes were affected in an opposite manner when the plants were grown in normal or ABA-containing medium. Strikingly, ectopic expression of ABA signaling genes such as PYRABACTIN RESISTANCE 1-LIKE (PYL) 4, 5, or 6 or suppression of HIGHLY ABA-INDUCED 2 (HAI2) and MITOGEN-ACTIVATED PROTEIN KINASE KINASE KINASE 18 (MAPKKK18) not only largely rescued the root growth defects in DVL20-overexpressing plants in normal growth condition but also conferred tolerance to ABA. Based on these results, we propose that DVL1, 2, 5, 8 and 20 function redundantly in root stem-cell maintenance under abiotic stress, and this role is achieved via ABA signaling.

BACKGROUND: Lymphangiogenesis has been reported to play crucial roles in the metastasis of thyroid cancer (THCA), but despite the significant research on lymphangiogenesis in THCA, the precise regulatory mechanism remains unclear. METHODS: Public databases including the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), TIMER, and UALCAN were used to analyze and visualize the expression of TET3 and AHR in THCA, and the correlation between these molecules were used by TIMER. Additionally, RT-PCR and Western Blot were performed to determine the mRNA and protein expression of related proteins. Plate colony formation, wound healing, cell cycle, apoptosis, angiogenesis and transwell assay were used to examine the ability of proliferation, movement, lymphangiogenesis, migration and invasion of THCA cells. RESULTS: Analysis of the TCGA database revealed higher expression levels of TET3 and AHR in tumor tissue compared to normal tissue in THCA. Additionally, a strong correlation was observed between TET3 and AHR. UALCAN database demonstrated that high expression of TET3 and AHR was associated with advanced THCA TNM stages in THCA patients. Furthermore, TET3 activation accelerated THCA cell proliferation by inducing G2/M phase arrest and suppressing apoptosis, while AHR inactivation reduced THCA cell proliferation by decreasing G2/M phase arrest and promoting apoptosis in vitro. Notably, both TET3 and AHR significantly enhanced THCA cell lymphangiogenesis, migration and invasion. Moreover, TET3 activation and AHR inactivation regulated HIF-1α/VEGF signaling pathway, which ultimately, blocked the HIF-1α/VEGF in THCA cells and impaired their movement, migration and invasion abilities. CONCLUSIONS: The combined action of TET3 and AHR to promote lymphangiogenesis in THCA through the HIF-1α/VEGF signaling pathway, and targeting them might provide a potential treatment strategy for THCA.

ABSTRACT

Encouraging feedback is shown to increase motivation and facilitate learning in different settings, though there is a lack of knowledge of applying it in work technique training. This pilot study aimed to evaluate two accumulated vibrotactile feedback strategies for work technique training using a smart workwear system. Eight women and two men participated in the study. They were divided into two groups, receiving the corrective feedback or the combined corrective and encouraging feedback while doing simulated manual handling tasks in a lab environment. Questionnaires and semi-structured interviews were used to evaluate the motivation, learning, and user experiences. In this small sample size, we saw that both groups significantly improved their work technique of upper arm and trunk postures, and no significant difference between groups was seen. In addition, both groups reported increased ergonomic awareness, were satisfied with the feedback training, and considered the system useful. However, the combined feedback group had slightly lower ratings of motivation and more negative experiences of the corrective feedback itself compared to the corrective feedback group. Both groups had positive experiences with the encouraging feedback. Future research should consider investigating the long-term learning effects of using solely corrective or encouraging accumulated feedback for work technique training with such systems.

INTRODUCTION: Vascular neointimal hyperplasia, a pathological process observed in cardiovascular diseases such as atherosclerosis and pulmonary hypertension, involves the abundant presence of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs). The proliferation, migration, and autophagy of VSMCs are associated with the development of neointimal lesions. Circular RNAs (circRNAs) play critical roles in regulating VSMC proliferation and migration, thereby participating in neointimal hyperplasia. However, the regulatory roles of circRNAs in VSMC autophagy remain unclear. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to identify circRNAs that are involved in VSMC autophagy-mediated neointimal hyperplasia, as well as elucidate the underlying mechanisms. METHODS: Dual-luciferase reporter gene assay was performed to validate two competing endogenous RNA axes, hsa_circ_0001402/miR-183-5p/FKBP prolyl isomerase like (FKBPL) and hsa_circ_0001402/miR-183-5p/beclin 1 (BECN1). Cell proliferation and migration analyses were employed to investigate the effects of hsa_circ_0001402, miR-183-5p, or FKBPL on VSMC proliferation and migration. Cell autophagy analysis was conducted to reveal the role of hsa_circ_0001402 or miR-183-5p on VSMC autophagy. The role of hsa_circ_0001402 or miR-183-5p on neointimal hyperplasia was evaluated using a mouse model of common carotid artery ligation. RESULTS: Hsa_circ_0001402 acted as a sponge for miR-183-5p, leading to the suppression of miR-183-5p expression. Through direct interaction with the coding sequence (CDS) of FKBPL, miR-183-5p promoted VSMC proliferation and migration by decreasing FKBPL levels. Besides, miR-183-5p reduced BECN1 levels by targeting the 3'-untranslated region (UTR) of BECN1, thus inhibiting VSMC autophagy. By acting as a miR-183-5p sponge, overexpression of hsa_circ_0001402 increased FKBPL levels to inhibit VSMC proliferation and migration, while simultaneously elevating BECN1 levels to activate VSMC autophagy, thereby alleviating neointimal hyperplasia. CONCLUSION: Hsa_circ_0001402, acting as a miR-183-5p sponge, increases FKBPL levels to inhibit VSMC proliferation and migration, while enhancing BECN1 levels to activate VSMC autophagy, thus alleviating neointimal hyperplasia. The hsa_circ_0001402/miR-183-5p/FKBPL axis and hsa_circ_0001402/miR-183-5p/BECN1 axis may offer potential therapeutic targets for neointimal hyperplasia.

In recent years, nearly 20 cave sites with rich assemblages of mammalian fossils have been found and excavated in the Chongzuo area, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China. Their ages are distributed throughout the entire Pleistocene Epoch. These discoveries have greatly facilitated our understanding of the evolution of the Stegodon-Ailuropoda fauna and the environmental context of human evolution in southern China. Here, we present a preliminary report on a diverse late Middle Pleistocene mammalian fauna from the Yixiantian Cave in southern China, which is a typical representative of the Stegodon-Ailuropoda fauna (sensu lato). The fossil mammals are represented by isolated dental remains only. In 2010 and 2011, two seasons of systematic excavations at the Yixiantian Cave yielded a total of 4,958 identifiable mammalian teeth. They were identified as belonging to 37 species and 6 orders of mammals. In addition, the tooth type of all the teeth representing each species was also determined where possible. A single fragmentary molar was identified as belonging to Gigantopithecus blacki, indicating that its population had declined sharply at this time and was on the brink of extinction. Description of the Yixiantian fauna will not only help better characterize the composition of the Stegodon-Ailuropoda fauna during the late Middle Pleistocene, but also clarify our understanding of the paleoenvironmental context at a time just prior to the extinction of G. blacki.

Background: Cisplatin (CIS) is widely used to treat various cancers but can cause ototoxicity and sensory hair cell loss in the inner ear. Copper induces an excessive production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in hair cells, leading to the development of various antioxidants. Methods and results: This study aimed to evaluate the potential antioxidant properties of curcumin (CUR) in the inner ear organ of corti-1 cells (OC1) and animal models (zebrafish and guinea pigs). Graphene oxide quantum dots (GOQDs) enabled CUR to penetrate the round window membrane (RWM) and maintain the concentration in the perilymph after inner ear administration. The results showed that CUR/GOQDs had favorable biocompatibility and strongly affected ROS generation induced by CIS in OC1 cells. DCFHDA Green staining demonstrated that CUR/GOQDs successfully reversed the decrease in mitochondrial membrane potential induced by CIS in vitro and rescued cells from early cuproptosis, which was confirmed by FDX1 staining. Additionally, the experiment found that CUR decreased the expression of cuproptosis proteins (FDX1, LIAS, and LIPT1) and increased the expression of the Bcl-2 protein. Conclusion: The results demonstrate that CUR/GOQDs is a promising therapeutic agent that can prevent CIS-induced ototoxicity by blocking the cuproptosis signal pathway.

Smart workwear systems with embedded inertial measurement unit sensors are developed for convenient ergonomic risk assessment of occupational activities. However, its measurement accuracy can be affected by potential cloth artifacts, which have not been previously assessed. Therefore, it is crucial to evaluate the accuracy of sensors placed in the workwear systems for research and practice purposes. This study aimed to compare in-cloth and on-skin sensors for assessing upper arms and trunk postures and movements, with the on-skin sensors as the reference. Five simulated work tasks were performed by twelve subjects (seven women and five men). Results showed that the mean (±SD) absolute cloth-skin sensor differences of the median dominant arm elevation angle ranged between 1.2° (±1.4) and 4.1° (±3.5). For the median trunk flexion angle, the mean absolute cloth-skin sensor differences ranged between 2.7° (±1.7) and 3.7° (±3.9). Larger errors were observed for the 90th and 95th percentiles of inclination angles and inclination velocities. The performance depended on the tasks and was affected by individual factors, such as the fit of the clothes. Potential error compensation algorithms need to be investigated in future work. In conclusion, in-cloth sensors showed acceptable accuracy for measuring upper arm and trunk postures and movements on a group level. Considering the balance of accuracy, comfort, and usability, such a system can potentially be a practical tool for ergonomic assessment for researchers and practitioners.

Stylo (Stylosanthes guianensis) is a tropical forage and cover crop that possesses low phosphate (Pi) tolerance traits. However, the mechanisms underlying its tolerance to low-Pi stress, particularly the role of root exudates, remain unclear. This study employed an integrated approach using physiological, biochemical, multi-omics, and gene function analyses to investigate the role of stylo root exudates in response to low-Pi stress. Widely targeted metabolomic analysis revealed that eight organic acids and one amino acid (L-cysteine) were significantly increased in the root exudates of Pi-deficient seedlings, among which tartaric acid and L-cysteine had strong abilities to dissolve insoluble-P. Furthermore, flavonoid-targeted metabolomic analysis identified 18 flavonoids that were significantly increased in root exudates under low-Pi conditions, mainly belonging to the isoflavonoid and flavanone subclasses. Additionally, transcriptomic analysis revealed that 15 genes encoding purple acid phosphatases (PAPs) had upregulated expression in roots under low-Pi conditions. Among them, SgPAP10 was characterized as a root-secreted phosphatase, and overexpression of SgPAP10 enhanced organic-P utilization by transgenic Arabidopsis. Overall, these findings provide detailed information regarding the importance of stylo root exudates in adaptation to low-Pi stress, highlighting the plant's ability to release Pi from organic-P and insoluble-P sources through root-secreted organic acids, amino acids, flavonoids, and PAPs.

BACKGROUND: Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) play an essential role in tumorigenesis and development of cancers. Nevertheless, the specific molecular mechanism of tumorigenesis and development in Laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) still unknown. METHODS: CAFs, CPFs and NFs were isolated and identified from laryngeal cancer, para-laryngeal cancer and normal tissues. Immunofluorescent staining, Rt-PCR and Western Blot were used to detect the expression of related proteins. Wound healing, migration, invasion and animal experiments were used to examine the ability of movement, migration, invasion and metastasis of LSCC. RESULTS: ROCK1, was highly expressed in CAFs and CAFs enhanced LSCC metastasis in vivo and vitro, and downregulation of ROCK1 in CAFs inhibited the migration and invasion of LSCC cells. While increasing ROCK1 expression in NFs promoted the migration and invasion of LSCC cells. Further studies revealed that epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and JAK2/STAT3/ERK1/2 pathway might play an essential role in promoting metastasis of LSCC. In addition, inhibition activity of ROCK1 or JAK2/STAT3/ERK1/2 signal molecules significantly reduced EMT and metastasis. CONCLUSIONS: CAFs-derived ROCK1 via JAK2/STAT3/ERK1/2 axis mediated EMT to promote LSCC metastasis and targeting ROCK1 might provide a potential treatment strategy for LSCC.

ABSTRACT

In this study, a process based on the molten salt method was proposed to prepare La2Zr2O7 for improving the kinetic conditions of synthesis. Considering that the particle size of raw materials is an important factor that may have an effect on the kinetic process of synthesis, ZrO2 and La2O3 with different particle sizes are used as raw materials, and the synthesis experiment is carried out at 900-1300 °C through the combination of raw materials with different particle sizes. The results show that the particle size of ZrO2 plays an important role in the synthesis of La2Zr2O7. The "dissolution precipitation" mechanism of the synthesis process in the NaCl-KCl molten salt was confirmed by SEM image observation. Furthermore, the influence of the dissolution rate of each raw material on the synthesis reaction was studied by introducing the Noyes-Whitney equation and testing the specific surface area and solubility of each raw material, and it was confirmed that the particle size of ZrO2 was the limiting condition of the synthesis reaction, and use of ZrO2(Z50) with a nominal particle size of 50 nm could significantly improve the kinetic condition of the reaction, thus reducing the synthesis temperature, which can help realize the energy-saving and -efficient synthesis of pyrochlore La2Zr2O7.

ABSTRACT

Compound Kushen injection (CKI) is a type of traditional Chinese medicine that has previously been studied for the treatment of various types of cancer. Previous studies have reported that CKI regulates cell apoptosis by downregulating the PI3K/Akt pathway. The present study aimed to determine whether CKI alleviates heart failure (HF) by attenuating cardiomyocyte apoptosis via the inhibition of the PI3K/Akt pathway. Angiotensin II (Ang II) was used to elicit HF, and osmotic minipumps with either Ang II (2 µg/kg/day) or phosphate­buffered saline (PBS; 200 µl) were subcutaneously implanted into 6­week­old male C57BL/6 mice for 3 weeks. In addition, PBS or CKI (25 mg/kg/day) were subcutaneously infused once a day for 3 weeks. Echocardiography was used to examine hemodynamics. The myocardial injury biomarkers, cardiac troponin I and N­terminal (NT)­pro hormone B­type natriuretic peptide, were assessed using enzyme­linked immunosorbent assay. Transmission electron microscopy was used to determine the morphology of the myocardium. The rate of apoptosis was detected using TUNEL staining and flow cytometry (FCM), and the expression levels of apoptosis­related proteins were measured using western blot (WB) analysis. Moreover, H9C2 cells were treated with CKI (2 mg/ml) or LY294002 (an inhibitor of the PI3K/Akt pathway; 25 µmol/l) in combination with Ang II (1 µmol/l) for 48 h. Cell Counting Kit­8 assay, FCM and WB analysis were performed in the H9C2 cells to examine cell viability, cell cycle distribution and representative signaling proteins. It was found that CKI promoted healthy cardiac function, reduced myocardial structural damage and reduced the rate of cardiomyocyte apoptosis. CKI markedly attenuated the expression of apoptosis­related proteins in the PI3K/Akt pathway. The results of the in vitro experiments indicated that CKI promoted cardiomyocyte proliferation and inhibited apoptosis, similar to LY294002. On the whole, the present study demonstrates that CKI reduces cardiomyocyte apoptosis, promotes healthy cardiac function and attenuates Ang II­mediated HF. These ameliorative effects may be associated with the inhibition of the PI3K/Akt pathway.

ABSTRACT

Fibrovascular polyps (FVPs) are rare benign submucosal tumor-like lesions originating in the cervical esophagus and sporadically in the hypopharynx. In this article, we report a rare case of FVPs of the hypopharynx (hFVPs) with a mass measuring 16.0 × 4.0 × 1.8 cm in size, discussed its surgical strategy, and additionally reviewed relevant literature on important factors, such as age, sex, symptoms, size, treatments, and recurrence, associated with hFVPs.

With the widespread application of Ag+ in modern life and industry, the potential hazardous effects of Ag+ to environment and humans have attracted great concerns. Thus, effective and rapid strategies for Ag+ detection are highly desirable. In this paper, a novel ratiometric fluorescence sensor using CdSe quantum dots (QDs) has been constructed for sensitive and selective detection of Ag+, which is based on the formation of Ag2Se QDs. CdSe QDs were initially prepared and showed single wavelength emission at 510 nm. When Ag+ exists, a rising peak appeared at 650 nm and the emission at 510 nm declined, exhibiting distinct ratiometric fluorescence emission (I650/I510) characteristic with a linear response over the Ag+ concentration range of 0.01-4 µM. Significantly, the fluorescence changed from green to red. The detection limit of the constructed sensor is 1.4 nM. Furthermore, the sensing assay can be successfully applied to detect Ag+ in real water samples and living cells.

ABSTRACT

Atresia of the anterior nares is usually caused by acquired disorders such as iatrogenic damage, burns, and postoperative scar, but congenital cases are relatively rare. Here, we report a rare case of congenital anterior nostril atresia in an aged person with bilateral nasal congestion and snoring. The patient underwent surgery, and no recurrence was observed after a 2-year follow-up. To increase our understanding on this condition, we performed a literature review and discussed its associated clinical features, differential diagnoses, and treatment methods.
