ABSTRACT

Introduction: Specific immunoglobulins E (sIgE) are important parameters for the estimation of severity of allergic diseases. Aim: To determine the relationship between the concentration of specific IgE antibodies in serum and types of asthma. Material and methods: The concentration of sIgE antibodies against allergens Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, cat dander, timothy grass, and Alternaria alternata were determined in the serum of 4077 respondents randomly selected from 8 regions (ECAP study). The positive results of sIgE (≥ 0.35 IU/ml or ≥ 0.7 IU/ml) were correlated to clinical diagnosis (types of asthma, skin-prick tests). Results: sIgE antibodies against any allergen were detected in 9.9% (classes 1-6)/7.6% (classes 2-6) of healthy respondents. Comparing sIgE antibodies of respondents with intermittent asthma to sIgE antibodies of respondents with persistent asthma, no statistically significant differences were identified. Relating to allergens of D. pteronyssinus, cat dander, and A. alternata, sIgE antibodies were more frequently detected in respondents with atopic asthma and a negative skin-prick test as compared to healthy respondents with a negative skin-prick test (p < 0.005 to p < 0.001). Relating to allergens of D. pteronyssinus, cat dander, and timothy grass, sIgE antibodies were more frequently detected in respondents with atopic asthma and a weakly positive skin-prick test as compared to healthy respondents with weakly positive skin-prick test (p < 0.05 to p < 0.001). Conclusions: Regarding subjects with a negative or weakly positive skin test, when sIgE antibodies to the same allergen are detected, asthma is much more likely to occur.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Specific immunoglobulins E (sIgE) are important parameters for the estimation of severity of allergic diseases. Aim: To determine the relationship between the concentration of specific IgE antibodies in serum and types of rhinitis. Material and methods: The concentration of sIgE antibodies against allergens Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, cat dander, timothy grass, and Alternaria alternata were determined in the serum of 4077 respondents randomly selected from 8 regions (ECAP study). The positive results of sIgE (≥ 0.35 IU/ml or ≥ 0.7 IU/ml) were correlated to clinical diagnosis (types of rhinitis, skin-prick tests). Results: sIgE antibodies are more frequently detected in respondents with intermittent/seasonal allergic rhinitis and a negative skin-prick test as compared to healthy respondents with a negative skin-prick test (p < 0.05 to p < 0.001). Relating to allergens of D. pteronyssinus and cat dander, sIgE antibodies are more frequently detected in respondents with persistent/perennial allergic rhinitis and a negative or weakly positive skin-prick test as compared to healthy respondents with a negative or weakly positive skin-prick test (p < 0.05 to p < 0.001). Conclusions: The occurrence of intermittent/seasonal allergic rhinitis is much more probable in respondents with a negative skin-prick test, when IgE antibodies against the same allergen are detected. And the occurrence of persistent/perennial allergic rhinitis is much more probable in respondents with a negative or weakly positive skin-prick test with allergens of D. pteronyssinus or cat dander, when IgE antibodies against the same allergen are detected.

ABSTRACT

Background: Infants with duct dependent heart lesions often require invasive procedures during the neonatal or early infancy period. These patients remain a challenge for pediatric cardiologists, neonatologists, and intensive care unit personnel. A relevant portion of these infant suffer from respiratory, cardiac failure and may develop NEC, which leads to inadequate growth and nutrition, causing delayed or complicated cardiac surgery. Methods: This randomized control trial will recruit term infants diagnosed with a duct dependant lesion within the first 72 h of life. After obtaining written parental consent patients will be randomized to either the physician led enteral feeding or protocol-based feeding group. The intervention will continue up to 28 days of life or day of cardiosurgical treatment, whichever comes first. The primary outcomes include NEC and death related to NEC. Secondary outcomes include among others, number of interrupted feedings, growth velocity, daily protein and caloric intake, days to reach full enteral feeding and on mechanical ventilation. Discussion: Our study will be the first randomized control trial to evaluate if standard (as in healthy newborns) initiation and advancement of enteral feeding is safe, improves short term outcomes and does not increase the risk of NEC. If the studied feeding regime proves to be intact, swift implementation and advancement of enteral nutrition may become a recommendation. Trial registration: The study protocol has been approved by the local ethical board. It is registered at ClinicalTrials.gov NCT05117164.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Specific immunoglobulins E (sIgE) are important parameters to estimate the severity of allergic diseases. Aim: To determine the influence of gender, age and place of residence on the concentration of specific IgE antibodies in serum. Material and methods: The concentration of sIgE antibodies against allergens of Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, cat dander, timothy grass, Alternaria alternata were determined in serum of 4077 respondents randomly selected from 8 regions (ECAP study). The positive results of sIgE (≥ 0.35 IU/ml) were correlated with answers to ECAP questionnaires. Results: IgE antibodies are less frequently detected in respondents living in the country (p < 0.05 to p < 0.005); and they are less frequently detected in respondents living in cities of hardly industrialised regions than in respondents living in cities of industrialised regions (D. pteronyssinus p < 0.05, cat dander p < 0.01). IgE antibodies are more frequently detected in men (p < 0.005 to p < 0.001). IgE antibodies are more frequently detected in respondents born in May-July (timothy grass p < 0.005, Alternaria alternata p < 0.005) and less frequently detected in respondents born in August-October (timothy grass p < 0.005, Alternaria alternata p < 0.05). Conclusions: Characteristics of the urban environment, non-specific factors and gender affect the concentration of specific IgE antibodies in serum. Influence of seasonal allergens within the first months of life and/or in the course of the foetal period alters the production of specific IgE antibodies.

ABSTRACT

In this work, nitrogen-doped porous carbons obtained from chitosan, gelatine, and green algae were investigated in their role as supercapacitor electrodes. The effects of three factors on electrochemical performance have been studied-of the specific surface area, functional groups, and a porous structure. Varying nitrogen contents (from 5.46 to 10.08 wt.%) and specific surface areas (from 532 to 1095 m2 g-1) were obtained by modifying the carbon precursor and the carbonization temperature. Doping nitrogen into carbon at a level of 5.74-7.09 wt.% appears to be the optimum for obtaining high electrochemical capacitance. The obtained carbons exhibited high capacitance (231 F g-1 at 0.1 A g-1) and cycle durability in a 0.2 mol L-1 K2SO4 electrolyte. Capacitance retention was equal to 91% at 5 A g-1 after 10,000 chronopotentiometry cycles. An analysis of electrochemical behaviour reveals the influence that nitrogen functional groups have on pseudocapacitance. While quaternary-N and pyrrolic-N nitrogen groups have an enhancing effect, due to the presence of a positive charge and thus improved electron transfer at high current loads, the most important functional group affecting energy storage performance is graphite-N/quaternary-N. The study points out that the search for the most favourable organic precursors is as important as the process of converting precursors to carbon-based electrode materials.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Specific immunoglobulins E (sIgE) are important parameters to estimate severity of allergic diseases. AIM: To determine the relationship between the concentration of sIgE antibodies in serum and clinical outcome of allergic diseases. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The concentration of sIgE antibodies against allergens Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, cat dander, Timothy grass, Alternaria alternata were determined in serum of 4077 respondents randomly selected from 9 regions (ECAP study). Positive results of sIgE (≥ 0.35 IU/ml) were correlated with answers in ECRHSII and ISAAC questionnaires. RESULTS: IgE antibodies are more frequently detected in respondents aged over 4 years when they had their first attack of asthma (cat dander p < 0.05, Timothy grass p < 0.05). IgE antibodies are less frequently detected in respondents aged over 29 years when they had the first allergic rhinitis symptoms as compared to respondents aged 0-19 years when they had the first allergic rhinitis symptoms (p < 0.05 to p < 0.001). Among respondents showing allergic rhinitis symptoms, IgE antibodies are more frequently detected in respondents showing those symptoms from May to August (p < 0.05 to p < 0.005). CONCLUSIONS: The first attack of asthma appears later mainly in patients whose immune systems are more strongly stimulated by allergens. Development of allergic rhinitis in patients aged over 29 years presumably needs weaker stimulation of their immune systems by allergens than in patients aged 0-19 years. Stimulation of an immune system by different types of allergens modifies its response in such a way that seasonal (late spring and summer) factors increase probability of allergic rhinitis symptoms.

ABSTRACT

The development of effective catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is a significant challenge in energy conversion systems, e.g., Zn-air batteries. Herein, green-algae- and gelatine-derived porous, nitrogen-rich carbons were extensively investigated as electrode materials for electrochemical catalytic reactions. These carbon-based catalysts were designed and optimized to create a metal-free catalyst via templating, carbonization, and subsequent removal of the template. The additional incorporation of graphene improved electronic conductivity and enhanced the electrochemical catalytic reaction. Porous carbons with heteroatoms were used as effective platinum-free ORR electrocatalysts for energy conversion; the presence of nitrogen in the carbon provided more active sites for ORR. Our catalyst also displayed notable durability in a rechargeable Zn-air battery energy system. More importantly, the nitrogen-containing porous carbons were found to have comparable ORR performance in alkaline media to commercially available electrocatalysts. The manuscript demonstrates that nitrogen atom insertion is an appropriate approach when aiming to eliminate noble metals from the synthesis route. N-doped carbons are competitive materials compared to reference platinum-based catalysts.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: The patterns of sensitisation to airborne allergens and their association with allergic diseases have been analysed in different geographical regions. AIM: To analyse the impact of sensitisation to airborne allergens on allergic rhinitis (AR) and asthma in different age groups of the Polish population. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Completed questionnaires of 18,617 subjects (53.8% females), collected within the ECAP, a cross-sectional multicentre study, were analysed. Three groups of respondents were included: 6-7-year-olds (24.2%), 13-14-year-olds (25.4%), 20-44-year-olds (50.4%). The clinical part (an anamnesis, physical examination, spirometry, skin prick tests and an assay of major airborne allergen-specific IgE) was attended by 25.7% of the respondents. RESULTS: The AR was most strongly related to sensitisation to Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, with the highest odds ratios of 10 in two younger groups and of 16 for persistent AR in children. It was also the most important risk factor for allergic asthma, with odd ratios from 8.34 in children to 6.40 in adolescents. Sensitisation to grass pollen allergens was a major risk factor for both AR, with odds ratios from 9.16 in adults to 7.87 in adolescents, and asthma, with odds ratios from 6.16 in adolescents to 5.67 in adults. CONCLUSIONS: AR and asthma shared common risk factors, independently of age. Sensitisation to airborne allergens was significantly associated with asthma and, even more strongly, with AR, across all age groups. The AR was the strongest risk factor for allergic asthma in the youngest group. Persistent AR increased asthma risk more than intermittent AR in all age groups.

ABSTRACT

In this work, carbon nanotubes (CNTs)/nitrogen-doped activated carbon (AC) hybrids were designed and fabricated using a facile and one-step synthesis. The synthesis of CNTs is based on the recently discovered phenomenon of thermally-induced polyfurfuryl alcohol (PFA) conversion. Hybrid materials are fabricated through the in-situ free growth of closed carbon nanotubes on low-cost activated carbon substrates which were obtained from green algae or amino acids. Herein, three types of carbon nanotubes were observed to freely grow on an activated carbon background from Chlorella vulgaris or L-lysine, types such as multiwalled carbon and bamboo-like nanotubes, whose structure depends on the background used and conditions of the synthesis. Structure type is identified by analyzing transmission electron microscopy images. HRTEM images reveal the tubes' outer diameter to be in the range of 20-120 nm. Because the carbon surface for the growth of carbon tubes contains nitrogen, the final hybrid materials also possess pyridinic-N and quaternary-N groups, as indicated by X-ray photoelectron spectra.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Despite the known role of pollen allergens in causing allergy symptoms in sensitized individuals, there are few publications investigating the relationship between pollen exposure in different regions and the prevalence of inhalant allergy. AIM: To assess the association between the prevalence of allergic rhinitis and asthma and the degree of exposure to pollen in various regions of Poland. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Completed questionnaires of 9,443 subjects living in four urban centres (Wroclaw, Katowice, Warsaw, Bialystok), collected within part of the ECAP project, were analyzed. Children aged 6-7 (n = 2,278), adolescents aged 13-14 (n = 2,418), and adults aged 20-44 (n = 4,747) constituted 24.2%, 25.6% and 50.3% of the respondents, respectively. The clinical part (including skin prick tests, an assay of Timothy grass-specific IgE), was attended by 24% of the respondents. Data from 6-year pollen monitoring served to characterize birch and grass pollen seasons. RESULTS: We found insignificant negative associations between the duration of birch pollen season and the prevalence of declared allergic rhinitis and asthma during the season across all age groups. There were insignificant inverse associations between the number of days with above-threshold and high grass pollen concentrations, total grass pollen count and the prevalence of declared allergic rhinitis and asthma during the season across all age groups. Associations noted in the clinical part were also non-significant; however, these trends were not uniform across the age groups. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings do not confirm the hypothesis of a positive association between pollen exposure and the prevalence of allergic rhinitis and asthma.

ABSTRACT

The N-doped hybrid carbon materials containing amorphous carbon nanotubes (ACNTs) were obtained by free growth of a polymer at 200 °C. The improvement of electrical conductivity was achieved by a final carbonization at 600-800 °C under the flow of nitrogen. The microstructure of ACNT/N-doped hybrids was characterized using a transmission electron microscope and X-ray diffusion. Furthermore, their elemental composition was measured using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and an elemental analyzer. The experimental results indicated that the ACNTs had a diameter in the range of 40-60 nm and the N-doped carbon background contained nitrogen atoms in most bonded pyrrolic-N and quaternary-N groups. The results revealed that the microstructure of the as-grown nanotubes, prepared by the proposed method, is mainly amorphous. This technique introduces the advantages of low cost and process simplicity, which may redeem some drawbacks of the methods commonly used in ACNT synthesis.

ABSTRACT

Maximum loads acting on aircraft structures generally arise when the aircraft is undergoing some form of acceleration, such as during landing. Landing, especially when considering rotorcrafts, is thus crucial in determining the operational load spectrum, and accurate predictions on the actual health/load level of the rotorcraft structure cannot be achieved unless a database comprising the structural response in various landing conditions is available. An effective means to create a structural response database relies on the modeling and simulation of the items and phenomena of concern. The structural response to rotorcraft landing is an underrated topic in the open scientific literature, and tools for the landing event simulation are lacking. In the present work, a coupled sequential simulation strategy is proposed and experimentally verified. This approach divides the complex landing problem into two separate domains, namely a dynamic domain, which is ruled by a multibody model, and a structural domain, which relies on a finite element model (FEM). The dynamic analysis is performed first, calculating a set of intermediate parameters that are provided as input to the subsequent structural analysis. Two approaches are compared, using displacements and forces at specific airframe locations, respectively, as the link between the dynamic and structural domains.

ABSTRACT

This paper presents the preparation and execution of on-ground static and engine load tests for the composite unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). The test was conducted for pre-flight structural strength verification of the remotely piloted aerial target named HORNET, after introducing some structural modifications. The ground tests were performed before the flight test campaign, to ensure the strength and operational safety of the modified structure. The panel method and Computer Aided Design (CAD) modelling were adopted for numerical evaluation of aerodynamic and inertial forces' distribution to simulate loading scenarios for launch, flight and parachute deploying conditions during the static test. Then, the multi-stage airframe static test was prepared and executed with the use of a designed modular test rig, artificial masses, as well as a wireless strain measurement system to perform structure verification. The UAV was investigated with 150% of the typical load spectrum. Furthermore, an engine test was also conducted on a ground test stand to verify strain and vibration levels in correspondence to engine speed, as well as the reliability of data link and the lack of its interferences with wireless control and telemetry. In the article, data achieved from the numerical and experimental parts of the test are discussed, as well as post-test remarks are given.

ABSTRACT

Background: Links between multimorbidity of allergic diseases and allergen sensitization are still under debate, especially in adults. This study aimed to establish a relationship between polysensitization and allergic multimorbidity in children and adults and the allergens involved in multimorbidity. Material and method: A cross-sectional multicentre study enrolled children aged 6-7 and 13-14 years and adults aged 20-44 years from a Polish national cohort. The diagnosis of allergic diseases was made by a physician. Skin prick tests to 13 allergens and serum IgE levels to 4 allergens were tested. Results: Among the 3856 participants, single disease (asthma, allergic rhinitis or atopic dermatitis) was diagnosed in 27.7% subjects and allergic multimorbidity in 9.3%. Allergic multimorbidity occurred more commonly in children than in adults (p < 0.01). Asthma or atopic dermatitis alone were not associated with polysensitization. Rhinitis and multimorbidity were associated with polysensitization. Allergic multimorbidity occurred in 2.2% of participants with negative skin prick tests, 9.8% of those with one positive prick test (SPT ≥ 3 mm) and 20.6% of polysensitized ones (p < 0.001). There was an increasing risk of multimorbidity depending on the number of positive prick tests for both SPT ≥ 3 mm (OR 9.6-16.5) and SPT ≥ 6 mm (OR 5.9-13.7). A statistically significant relationship was found between allergic multimorbidity and sensitization to cat and mite allergens. Conclusions: Multimorbidity is associated with polysensitization especially in children compared with adults in Polish population cohort. New insights into single disease patterns were found: bronchial asthma is the strongest risk factor for the development of multimorbidity in comparison with allergic rhinitis and atopic dermatitis.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Specific immunoglobulins E (sIgE) are important parameters to estimate severity of allergic diseases. AIM: To determine the influence of allergy risk factors on the concentration of specific IgE antibodies in serum. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The concentration of sIgE antibodies against allergens Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, cat dander, timothy grass, Alternaria alternata were determined in serum of 4077 respondents randomly selected from 9 regions (ECAP study). The positive results of sIgE (≥ 0.35 IU/ml) were correlated to answers in questionnaires ECRHSII and ISAAC. RESULTS: sIgE are more frequently detected in respondents declaring an allergic disease of a father than of a mother (D. pteronyssinus p < 0.05, A. alternata p < 0.01). An early beginning to attend school, kindergarten or nursery increases the frequency of sIgE detection (p < 0.05). If the number of children who slept in the same room as a respondent before the respondent was five years old, was lower, sIgE antibodies are more frequently detected (p < 0.05). Relating to: 1) all 4 allergens, sIgE are the most frequently detected in respondents declaring absence of a carpet/rug at home (p < 0.05), 2) cat dander - less frequently detected in respondents who have a cat at home at the age of 1-4 years (p < 0.005). CONCLUSIONS: Carpets/rugs capture a portion of mite, epidermal, mould allergens located at home, wherefore absence of a carpet or rug causes greater stimulation of an immune system by these allergens; as a consequence, IgE antibodies are the most frequently detected in respondents. Household contacts of the respondents, at the age of 1-4 years, with cats induced partial immune tolerance to cat dander.

ABSTRACT

We report a new theranostic nanoformulation to transport both chemotherapeutic and imaging agents for successfully exterminating cancer cells. This strategy is based on encapsulation of colchicine (cytostatic drug) and coumarin-6 (fluorescent biomarker) in oil-core nanocarriers stabilized by diamidequat-type surfactants - N,N-dimethyl-N,N-bis[2-(N-alkylcarbamoyl) ethyl]ammonium methylsulfates (2xCnA-MS, n=8,10,12), and fabricated by the nanoprecipitation technique. The surfactants were synthesized using a technologically viable methodology and characterized. The potential of the encapsulated theranostic cargoes was evaluated in cytotoxicity studies as well as in imaging of intracellular localization, accumulation and distribution of cargoes delivered to well characterized human cancer cell lines - doxorubicin-sensitive breast (MCF-7/WT), alveolar basal epithelial (A549) and skin melanoma (MEWO) - performed by confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). Backscattered profiles obtained by the turbidimetric technique were applied to evaluate physical stability of the obtained nanosystems. DLS measurements confirmed the particle diameter to be below 200nm, while AFM - its morphology and shape. Doppler electrophoresis provided a highly positive ζ-potential. UV-vis was applied to determine the encapsulation efficiencies (ca. 90%), and release profiles. The study demonstrates that the soft cationic diamidequat-type surfactants are suitable for the stabilization of theranostic nanodispersions, and they can constitute a new functional class of stabilizers of nanoparticles and have a progressive impact onto development of formulations. Furthermore, our results demonstrate excellent biocompatibility of the studied long-sustained monodisperse oil-core nanocapsules, stabilized by 2xCnA-MS, which makes them promising for cell imaging.

ABSTRACT

The results of systematic studies of organics adsorption from aqueous solutions (at the neutral pH level) in a system of slit-like carbon pores having different sizes and oxygen groups located at the pore mouth are reported. Using molecular dynamics simulations (GROMACS package) the properties of adsorbent-adsorbate (benzene, phenol or paracetamol) as well as adsorbent-water systems are discussed. After the introduction of surface oxygen functionalities, adsorption of organic compounds decreases (in accordance with experimental data) and this is caused by the accumulation of water molecules at pore entrances. The pore blocking effect decreases with the diameter of slits and practically vanishes for widths larger than approx. 0.68 nm. We observed the increase in phenol adsorption with the rise in temperature. Moreover, adsorbed molecules occupy the external surface of the slit pores (the entrances) in the case of oxidized adsorbents. Among the studied molecules benzene, phenol and paracetamol prefer an almost flat orientation and with the rise in the pore width the number of molecules oriented in parallel decreases. The decrease or increase in temperature (with respect to 298 K) leads to insignificant changes of angular orientation of adsorbed molecules.

ABSTRACT

Open repair of thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm is connected with high mortality and morbidity. On the other hand, endovascular treatment of thoraco-abdominal aneurysms, which started 10 years ago, reduced perioperative mortality and morbidity. However, it results in a high level of late complications. It seems that an interesting solution to the problem is a hybrid procedure, which allows late complications to be reduced with acceptable levels of operative mortality and morbidity. This case report presents the use of a hybrid procedure in treatment of symptomatic thoraco-abdominal aneurysm in a patient with prior abdominal aortic reconstruction. In the first stage the patient underwent open revascularization of visceral vessels of the aorta. One week later a thoraco-abdominal stent-graft was implanted. The perioperative and postoperative period was uncomplicated. Two months after the second intervention the patient returned to work. Control imaging conducted 30 and 90 days after the procedure confirmed patency of all revascularized vessels and did not reveal any graft-related complications. The hybrid procedure seems to be an interesting alternative for open and endovascular repair of thoraco-abdominal aneurysms because it combines the advantages of open and endovascular repair. It also gives an opportunity to perform the procedure within a reasonable period of time from diagnosis of symptomatic thoraco-abdominal aneurysm.

ABSTRACT

The title compound, C(15)H(11)N(3)O, (I), was obtained by the air oxidation of 3,5-diphenyl-4,5-dihydro-1,2,4-triazin-6(1H)-one. In the crystal structure, (I) forms centrosymmetric hydrogen-bonded dimers through pairs of N-H...N hydrogen bonds. The molecular structure of (I) deviates somewhat from planarity in the crystalline state, whereas a density functional theory (DFT) study predicts a completely planar conformation (C(s) point-group symmetry) for the isolated molecule. The solid-state conformation of (I) is stabilized by intramolecular hydrogen bonds, viz. one C-H...O interaction, which forms a six-membered ring, and three C-H...N interactions that each form five-membered rings. To estimate the influence of the intramolecular hydrogen-bonded rings on the aromaticity of the phenyl rings, the HOMA (harmonic oscillator model of aromaticity) descriptor of π-electron delocalization has been calculated for conformations of (I) with and without intramolecular hydrogen bonds. In the planar conformation of (I), the HOMA values for both benzene rings are lower than in hypothetical conformations without intramolecular hydrogen bonds.
