ABSTRACT

Objetivo: analisar os fatores intervenientes na gerência do cuidado de enfermagem à criança hospitalizada com cardiopatia reumática. Método: estudo descritivo-exploratório com abordagem qualitativa, que utilizou a Teoria Fundamentada em Dados e o Interacionismo Simbólico, respectivamente, como referencial metodológico e teórico. A coleta de dados foi realizada em uma instituição especializada em atendimento cardiológico, no munícipio do Rio de Janeiro. Foram entrevistados 19 profissionais de enfermagem através de um roteiro semiestruturado. Resultado: emergiram os seguintes fatores intervenientes na prática da gerência do cuidado: condição socioeconômica da família, comportamento da criança, condições de trabalho, comunicação ineficaz, educação permanente, trabalho em equipe e experiência profissional. Conclusão: os resultados apontam para a necessidade de proposição de estratégias de ação e interação que facilitem a prática gerencial de cuidado à criança com cardiopatia reumática e sua família face aos fatores intervenientes identificados.


Objective: to analyze the factors involved in the management of nursing care for children hospitalized with rheumatic heart disease. Method: this is a descriptive-exploratory study with a qualitative approach, which used Data-Based Theory and Symbolic Interactionism, respectively, as methodological, and theoretical references. Data was collected in an institution specializing in cardiac care in the city of Rio de Janeiro. Nineteen nursing professionals were interviewed using a semi-structured script. Result: the following intervening factors in the practice of care management emerged: the family's socioeconomic status, the child's behavior, working conditions, ineffective communication, continuing education, teamwork, and professional experience. Conclusion: the results point to the need to propose strategies for action and interaction that facilitate management practice in caring for children with rheumatic heart disease and their families, given the intervening factors identified.

Método: estudio descriptivo-exploratorio con enfoque cualitativo, cuyos marcos metodológico y teórico fueron la Teoría Fundamentada y el Interaccionismo Simbólico, respectivamente. La recolección de datos se realizó en una institución especializada en atención cardiológica, en la ciudad de Río de Janeiro. Fueron entrevistados 19 profesionales de enfermería mediante un cuestionario semiestructurado. Resultado: surgieron los siguientes factores intervinientes en la práctica de la gestión del cuidado: condición socioeconómica de la familia, comportamiento del niño, condiciones de trabajo, comunicación ineficaz, educación continua, trabajo en equipo y experiencia profesional. Conclusión: los resultados indican que es necesario proponer estrategias de acción e interacción que faciliten la práctica de la gestión del cuidado al niño con cardiopatía reumática y a sus familiares, con respecto a los factores intervinientes identificados.

ABSTRACT

A 4-year-old boy with Nuclear factor-kappa B Essential Modulator deficiency syndrome presented with encephalopathy post haematopoietic stem cell transplantation. MRI demonstrated T2/FLAIR-hyperintensities in the posterior cerebral cortex concerning for posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome. Clinical improvement was appreciated following withdrawal of the suspected offending pharmacological agent (Cyclosporine). An 18F-FDG PET/CT performed 2 months later to screen for post-transplant lymphoproliferative disease demonstrated markedly reduced FDG uptake in the posterior cerebral cortex, involving the parietal and occipital lobes. We describe, to the best of our knowledge, the first case of profound cerebral hypometabolism in a child with clinically resolved posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome.

ABSTRACT

Appendicitis is the most common cause of acute abdominal pain requiring surgical intervention; however, it is extremely rare in infants. Its diagnosis and treatment are challenging due to nonspecific clinical signs and symptoms. As a result, delayed or missed diagnosis is common in young children and is associated with an increased risk of perforation and peritonitis. We reported a case of a 4-month-old healthy male child. The patient presented with abdominal distention and fever. After ruling out other possible causes, he was diagnosed with acute appendicitis, which was confirmed by a CT scan. A gangrenous appendix, dilated bowel loops, and free fluid in the abdomen were discovered during surgery. An appendectomy was performed. The appendix in infants has an average length of 4.5 cm compared with 9.5 cm in adults. Infantile appendicitis is considered rare but cases have been documented also in neonates, misdiagnosis rates are high due to rarity in this age group in addition to nonspecific signs and symptoms, which led to a high perforation rate. Ultrasonography can diagnose appendicitis in children with a sensitivity and specificity of 90%-95% without subjecting the child to radiation. A physician should always keep the diagnosis of appendicitis in mind in the infant age group, even though it is rare, as a delay in diagnosis and treatment has been associated with an increased risk of complications including appendicular perforation and peritonitis.

ABSTRACT

Chordomas are uncommon bone slow-growing tumors developing from remnants of the notochord. They are typically seen in adults, and rarely in children. We present the case of a 16-year-old male patient with a clival chordoma, presenting with progressive headache and diplopia. In this case report we aim to provide an educational explanation of the radiological findings, diagnostic challenges, and therapeutic and management strategies.

ABSTRACT

Modern drugs have changed epilepsy, which affects people of all ages. However, for young people with epilepsy, the framework of drug development has stalled. In the wake of the thalidomide catastrophe, the misconception emerged that for people < 18 years of age drugs, including antiseizure medications (ASMs), need separate proof of efficacy and safety, overall called "pediatric drug development". For ASMs, this has changed to some degree. Authorities now accept that ASMs are effective in < 18 years as well, but they still require "extrapolation of efficacy," as if minors were another species. As a result, some of the pediatric clinical epilepsy research over the past decades was unnecessary. Even more importantly, this has hampered research on meaningful research goals. We do not need to confirm that ASMs work before as they do after the 18th birthday. Instead, we need to learn how to prevent brain damage in young patients by preventing seizures and optimize ASMs' uses. Herein we discuss how to proceed in this endeavor.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To review the program and patient metrics for ovarian tissue cryopreservation (OTC) within a comprehensive pediatric fertility preservation program in its first 12 years of development. Design: Retrospective review. Setting: A tertiary children's hospital in a large urban center between March 2011 and February 2023. Patients: Pediatric patients who underwent OTC. Interventions: Unilateral oophorectomy for OTC. Main Outcome Measures: Patient demographics and clinical course information were collected for analysis. Results: A total of 184 patients underwent OTC in the first 12 years. One hundred fifteen patients were prepubertal at the time of OTC, and 69 were postpubertal. In total, 128 patients (69.6%) received part of their planned therapy before OTC. Starting in 2018, 104 participants (92.0%) donated tissue to research, 99 participants (87.6%) donated blood, and 102 (90.2%) donated media to research. There was a decrease in the median age of patients who underwent OTC from 16.4-6.6 years and an overall increase in the proportion of patients per year that were prepubertal. Forty-eight (26.0%) patients who underwent OTC were outside referrals and traveled from as far as Seattle, Washington. Conclusion: During the first 12 years of this program, oncofertility research increased, annual tissue cryopreservation cases increased, and the median age of those who underwent OTC decreased. The program was adapted to build a stand-alone gonadal tissue processing suite and specialized in prepubertal ovarian tissue processing. The program will continue to adapt to patient needs in the upcoming decades because restoration technologies advance through research supported by this and collaborating programs.

ABSTRACT

Bladder leiomyoma is a rare condition in pediatric and adolescent age groups, accounting for less than 1% of all bladder tumors, presenting a diverse array of histologic types and prevalence. Furthermore, bladder leiomyoma's prevalence is even more seldom with only five reported cases till the present day. Common presentation depends on the localisation and the affected layer in the bladder, urinary outlet or ureteral obstruction, irritative voiding symptoms, pelvic pain, and hematuria are the most common presentations of this condition. Diagnostic, treatment, and follow-up protocols in this entity are not well-established due to their rare occurrence in this age group. After complete surgical excision, the prognosis is excellent and the risk of recurrence is reported to be very low. Up to the present day, no instances of malignant transformation or metastasis have been documented in the literature. This case report aims to enhance current knowledge of the radiological, pathological, and clinical features of bladder leiomyoma in a 15-year-old female patient. The main complaint was lower urinary tract symptoms. An incidental solid bladder mass was discovered during the evaluation with ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Afterwards, cystoscopy confirmed a 5-centimeter solid mass at the right wall of the bladder, and transurethral piecemeal resection was performed. The bladder mass was found to be intramural, and complete endoscopic resection was considered safe and efficient during the surgery. No complications or recurrence occurred in the postoperative setting.

ABSTRACT

The global impact of drug shortages on healthcare systems is a concerning issue that needs urgent attention. These shortages not only jeopardize patient care, public health, and healthcare delivery but also pose distinct challenges for pediatric populations due to their specific medication requirements and vulnerabilities. It is imperative to address this issue to safeguard the health and wellbeing of this specific age group. This review Gaimed to conduct a systematic analysis of strategies for addressing drug shortages in pediatric care from 2014 to 2024. The search included five databases: PubMed, Reaxys, Embase, Scopus, and Science Direct, using the keywords "drug shortage" and "pediatric". The final protocol was developed following the guidelines outlined in the " The PRISMA 2020 statement: An updated guideline for reporting systematic reviews". In total, 234 publications were identified. After screening the search results and applying inclusion and exclusion measures, a total of 27 original research papers were included. The primary finding indicates that a comprehensive approach rooted in risk management can significantly mitigate drug shortages in pediatric settings. This approach should address underlying causes such as manufacturer and delivery challenges and focus on prevention through enhanced forecasting and vigilant shortage monitoring. The most prevalent response involved seeking alternative treatment options. It is imperative to implement institutional and national guidelines, foster communication, and provider education, and minimize waste to effectively mitigate drug shortages in pediatric settings.

OBJECTIVES: Both superior mesenteric artery syndrome (SMAS) and cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome (CHS) may present with abdominal pain, nausea, and emesis - making them difficult to differentiate or determine when they co-occur in adolescents who regularly use cannabis. Here, we present nine cases of CHS co-occurring with SMAS and characterize their clinical courses. METHODS: Patients admitted at Children's Hospital of Colorado between January 1, 2015, and March 23, 2023, who had both cannabis use (F12.1-F12.99) and chronic vascular disorders of the intestine (K55.1) on their problem lists were identified from the electronic medical record using ICD 10 codes. Nine met criteria for SMAS and chronic cannabis use. RESULTS: Six of nine patients were female. The most common presenting symptoms were nausea (9), vomiting (9), and weight loss (9). Four patients received cannabis cessation support. Patients lost a mean of 6.0 kg, had an average body mass index (BMI) of 15.61 percentile (17.7 kg/m2) and BMI Z-scores of -1.5. Symptoms were present for a mean of 19.6 weeks before diagnosis. CONCLUSIONS: Adolescents who experience nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and weight loss in association with chronic cannabis use and/or SMAS can present with confusing and overlapping symptoms. Our cohort was described as having CHS with co-occurring SMAS on imaging. Although the etiology of weight loss cannot be definitively ascertained, we postulate that the recurring emetic attacks from CHS led to weight loss resulting in SMAS. Improvement in diagnostic criteria for this population as well as cannabis cessation programming may aid in deceasing morbidity from these co-occurring conditions.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Bronchial blocker balloons inflated with small volumes of air increase balloon pressure, involving a risk of airway injury especially in young children. However, there are no established guidelines regarding the appropriate volumes of air required to provide safe bronchial occlusion. METHODS: This study aimed to introduce a novel method for calculating the amount of air required for safe bronchial blocker balloon occlusion for one lung anesthesia in young children. We included 79 pediatric patients who underwent video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery at our hospital. Preoperatively, the balloon pressure and corresponding diameter of 5F bronchial blockers inflated with different volumes of air were measured. Intraoperatively, bronchial diameters measured by computerized tomographic scans were matched to the ex vivo measured balloon diameters. The quality of lung isolation, incidence of balloon repositioning, and airway injury were documented. Postoperatively, airway injury was evaluated through fiberoptic bronchoscopy. RESULTS: Balloon pressure and balloon diameter showed linear and nonlinear correlations with volume, respectively. The median lengths of the right and left mainstem bronchi were median (interquartile range) range: 5.3 mm (4.5-6.3) 2.7-8.15 and 21.8 (19.6-23.4) 14-29, respectively. Occluding the left mainstem bronchus required <1 mL of air, with a balloon pressure of 27 cm H2O. The isolation quality was high with no case of mucosal injury or displacement. Occluding the right mainstem bronchus required a median air volume of 1.3 mL, with a median balloon pressure of 44 cm H2O. One patient had poor lung isolation due to a tracheal bronchus and another developed mild and transient airway injury. CONCLUSION: The bronchial blocker cuff should be regarded as a high-pressure balloon. We introduced a new concept for safe bronchial blocker balloon occlusion for one-lung ventilation in small children.

BACKGROUND: Recovering pathogenic bacteria and yeast from pediatric blood cultures and reliably distinguishing between pathogens and contaminants are likely to be improved by increasing the volume of blood submitted to microbiology laboratories for culturing beyond the low volumes that have historically have been used. The primary aim of this study was to assess whether the pathogen recovery rate would increase after implementation of a weight-based algorithm for determining the intended volume of blood submitted for culturing. Secondary aims were to: 1) evaluate the effects of the algorithm implementation on the blood culture contamination rate; 2) determine whether pathogens might be found more often than contaminants in several as opposed to single bottles when more than one bottle is submitted; and 3) describe the microbiological findings for pathogens and contaminants in blood cultures by applying a clinical validation of true blood culture positivity. METHODS: A pre-post comparison of positivity and contamination rates after increasing the theoretical blood volume and number of blood culture bottles was performed, on the basis of a clinical validation of blood culture findings as pathogens vs contaminants. RESULTS: We examined 5327 blood cultures, including 186 with growth (123 true positives and 63 contaminated). The rate of true positive blood cultures significantly increased from 1.6% (42/2553) pre to 2.9% (81/2774, p = .002) post intervention. The rate of contaminated blood cultures did not change significantly during the study period (1.4% [35/2553] pre vs 1.0% [28/2774], p = .222) post intervention), but the proportion of contaminated cultures among all positive cultures decreased from 45% (35/77) pre to 26% (28/109, p = .005) post intervention. A microorganism that grew in a single bottle was considered a contaminant in 35% (8/23) of cases, whereas a microorganism that grew in at least two bottles was considered a contaminant in 2% (1/49, p < .001) of cases. According to common classification criteria relying primarily on the identity of the microorganism, 14% (17/123) of the recovered pathogens would otherwise have been classified as contaminants. CONCLUSION: Implementation of a weight-based algorithm to determine the volume and number of blood cultures in pediatric patients is associated with an increase in the pathogen recovery rate.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Children's vaccination mainly depends on their parents' decisions. Therefore, it is important to understand parents' acceptance and attitudes toward vaccinating their children against COVID-19. AIM: The study aimed to assess the pediatric nurses' acceptance and attitudes toward COVID-19 vaccines for their children at Assiut University Children Hospital. MATERIALS AND METHOD: A cross-sectional descriptive design was used on a convenience sample of 270 nurses who worked at Assiut University Children Hospital. TOOLS: Tool one involved the demographic characteristics of pediatric nurses and their children. Tool two consisted of pediatric nurses' acceptance and attitudes toward COVID-19 vaccines for their children: RESULTS: The results indicated that 79.3% of pediatric nurses had higher acceptance of vaccines and immunization of their children. Results also revealed that 80.0% of pediatric nurses had positive attitudes toward vaccines and their children's immunizations. CONCLUSION: It was concluded that most of pediatric nurses had high acceptance and positive attitudes toward vaccines and immunization of their children. Also, it was clarified that there was a positive statistically significant correlation between nurses' acceptance of vaccines and immunization of their children and their attitudes. RECOMMENDATIONS: Continuing education and tailored intervention should be implemented to correct misinformation and negative conceptions about the safety of vaccines for children.

The Severity-of-Illness Score for Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (SCORTEN) is a system that predicts in-hospital mortality for Stevens-Johnson Syndrome/Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (SJS/TEN). The system is widely utilized in adults but not pediatrics. We aim to determine the accuracy of the SCORTEN in pediatrics. A retrospective review of pediatric patients admitted to a verified pediatric burn center with SJS/TEN from 2008 to 2022 was performed. Twenty-four patients were analyzed. Ten patients had 0-1 SCORTEN risk factor, thirteen had 2 risk factors, and one had three risk factors. There was no relationship between initial BUN, bicarbonate, glucose, or initial heart rate on the length of intensive care unit (ICU) stay or ventilator days. Hospital length of stay and feeding tube days were positively related (p<0.001) along with length of stay and maximum total body surface areas (TBSA) (p<0.05 Hospital length of stay, ICU length of stay, and ventilator days were not statistically significant between those having 0-1 and 2 risk factors. This study suggests that the SCORTEN system is not useful for pediatrics and a different scoring system is needed, as SCORTEN overestimates mortality and does not have a relationship to outcome measures.

PURPOSE: To review the current literature regarding the pharmacological management of acute agitation in pediatric patients and practical considerations when comparing agents for empiric use in the emergency department (ED). SUMMARY: ED providers play an integral role in the management of acute agitation in pediatric patients. The development of acute agitation is multifactorial, and patients may quickly escalate upon arrival or while boarding in the ED. Nonpharmacological de-escalation strategies should be prioritized. If a patient poses a safety risk to themself or staff members, the administration of pharmacological treatment may be necessary to target the underlying cause and allow for the patient to safely engage in assessment and treatment. There is limited guidance regarding medication selection and dosing for acute agitation in pediatrics despite being a key facet of multimodal management. CONCLUSION: The literature regarding pharmacotherapy for acute agitation management in pediatric patients remains scarce. Medications utilized vary depending on institutional practice as well as provider preference. Evidence suggests that implementing an institutional protocol for pediatric acute agitation in the ED may improve patient outcomes. Additional studies are needed optimize the pharmacological management of acute pediatric agitation and patient outcomes in the ED.

ABSTRACT

The management of pediatric tumors is complex, with surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy being cornerstones in their treatment. Tumor removal is increasingly performed by a minimally invasive approach, which allows for quicker postoperative recovery and less postoperative pain. The goal of this report is to give an overview of minimally invasive surgical approaches for common pediatric tumors, with a focus on technical considerations and postoperative outcomes.

ABSTRACT

The use of allogeneic blood products to restore hemostasis during pediatric cardiac surgery is associated with major risks. Consequently, there has been a growing interest in new patient blood management strategies, such as those based on the use of fibrinogen concentrate (FC). Accumulating evidence has shown FC supplementation to be safe and effective. Nevertheless, no guidelines are available on using FC in the pediatric setting, and few objective evaluations have been provided in clinical practice. The endpoint of this monocenter retrospective study was the hemostatic effect of additional FC in infants undergoing complex cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass to manage persistent clinically relevant bleeding. After weaning from cardiopulmonary bypass and after protamine administration, patients were transfused with conventional allogeneic products such as packed red blood cells, fresh frozen plasma (FFP), and platelets. In the case of redo surgery, according to the institutional protocol, patients also received tranexamic acid. In case of clinically persistent relevant bleeding, according to the anesthesiologist's judgment and thromboelastography, patients received FC supplementation (group with FC) or further FFP transfusions without receiving FC supplementation (group without FC). The primary endpoint was the hemostatic effects of FC. Secondary endpoints were the functional hypofibrinogenemia threshold value (expressed as maximum amplitude fibrinogen, MA-Fib) and postoperative MA-Fib, fibrinogenemia, intraoperative transfusions, and adverse events (AEs). In total, 139 patients who underwent cardiac surgery with CPB and aged less than 2 years were enrolled: 70 patients received allogeneic blood products and FC supplementation (group FC); 69 patients received allogeneic products without FC supplementation (group without FC). Patients that received FC supplementation were characterized by a significantly longer time of extracorporeal circulation (p < 0.001) and aortic cross-clamping (p < 0.001), a significantly lower minimum temperature (p = 0.011), increased use of concentrated prothrombin complex (p = 0.016) and tranexamic acid (p = 0.010), and a significantly higher amount of packed red blood cells, platelets (p < 0.001) and fresh frozen plasma (p = 0.03). Postoperative bleeding and severe bleeding were not statistically different between patients treated with FC and those not treated with FC supplementation (p = 0.786 and p = 0.695, respectively); after adjustment, a trend toward reduced bleeding can be observed with FC (p = 0.064). Overall, 88% of patients with severe bleeding had MA-Fib < 10 mm; a moderate association between severe bleeding and MA-Fib (odds ratio 1.7, 95% CI 0.5-6.5, p = 0.425) was found. Increased MA-Fib and postoperative fibrinogen were higher in the FC group (p = 0.003 and p < 0.001, respectively) than in FFP. AEs in the FC group were comparable to those observed in less complicated surgeries. Our results suggest a potential role of FC in complex surgery in maintaining postoperative bleeding at a level comparable to less complicated surgical procedures and favoring the increase in postoperative MA-Fib and fibrinogen.

Fluorescence confocal microscopy (FCM) is an optical technique that uses laser light sources of different wavelengths to generate real-time images of fresh, unfixed tissue specimens. FCM allows histological evaluation of fresh tissue samples without the associated cryo artifacts after frozen sectioning. The aim of this study was to prospectively evaluate pediatric tumor specimens and assess their suitability for fresh tumor sampling. In addition, we aimed to determine whether tumor cell isolation for stable cell culture is still feasible after FCM imaging. Pediatric tumor specimens were imaged using FCM. Tumor viability and suitability for tissue sampling were evaluated and compared with H&E staining after paraffin embedding. In addition, FCM-processed and non-FCM-processed tissue samples were sent for tumor cell isolation to evaluate possible effects after FCM processing. When comparing estimated tumor cell viability using FCM and H&E, we found good to excellent correlating estimates (intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.891, p < 0.001), as well as substantial agreement in whether the tissue appeared adequate for fresh tissue collection (κ = 0.762, p < 0.001). After FCM, seven out of eight samples yielded passable cell cultures, compared to eight out of eight for non-FCM processed samples. Our study suggests that the use of FCM in tumor sampling can increase the yield of suitable fresh tumor samples by identifying viable tumor areas and ensuring that sufficient tissue remains for diagnosis. Our study also provides first evidence that the isolation and growth of tumor cells in culture are not compromised by the FCM technique.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Pediatric spontaneous intracranial dissecting aneurysms (IDA) are rare, but systematic studies comparing hemorrhagic and ischemic presentations are lacking. This study addresses gaps in understanding their epidemiology, clinical presentation, management, and outcome. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 23 pediatric patients with nontraumatic IDA treated between July 2018 and December 2023 was conducted. Patients were divided into two groups based on presentation: hemorrhagic (n=16) and ischemic (n=7). Clinical data were analyzed, including demographics, radiological findings, treatment modalities, and outcomes. RESULTS: Clinical presentations varied, with limb weakness being more prevalent in hemorrhagic cases (p=0.014), while headache and seizures were more common in ischemic cases. Angiographic analysis revealed distinct patterns, with hemorrhagic cases showing more distal involvement on vessel segments with stenosis and dilatation (pearl string sign). At the same time, the ischemic group exhibited the double-lumen sign. Various treatments, including microsurgery and endovascular techniques, were utilized, with perioperative complications observed, including one mortality in a hemorrhagic case. Multiple regression analysis identified significant risk factors for perioperative complications, namely, the configuration of the dissecting aneurysm (p=0.016) and the type of presentation (p=0.0006). Long-term Glasgow Outcome Scores were comparable, but patients with hemorrhagic manifestations experienced prolonged hospital and ICU stays (p=0.001). CONCLUSION: Pediatric intracranial dissecting aneurysms, particularly hemorrhagic cases, are associated with severe neurological deficits and higher perioperative complications. Despite similar long-term outcomes, hemorrhagic cases require prolonged hospitalization, increasing treatment costs. Optimizing management strategies for pediatric ICDAs, especially those with hemorrhagic features, is essential to improve outcomes and reduce healthcare expenditures.

ABSTRACT

A promising solution to customize oral drug formulations for the pediatric population has been found in the use of 3D printing, in particular Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) and Semi-Solid Extrusion (SSE). Although formulation development is currently limited to research studies, the rapid advances in 3D printing warn of the need for regulation. Indeed, even if the developed formulations include pharmaceutical excipients used to produce traditional oral forms such as tablets, the quantities of excipients used must be adapted to the process. Therefore, the aim of this literature review is to provide a synthesis of the available safety data on excipients mainly used in extrusion-based 3D printing for the pediatric population. A total of 39 relevant articles were identified through two scientific databases (PubMed and Science Direct). Then, groups of the main excipients were listed including their general information (name, chemical structure and pharmaceutical use) and a synthesis of the available safety data extracted from several databases. Finally, the role of the excipients in 3D printing, the amount used in formulations and the oral dose administered per form are presented.
