ABSTRACT

Abstract Introduction: The Short Health Anxiety Inventory is a commonly used tool for assessing health anxiety, but its psychometric properties and internal structure have not been examined in a Latin American Spanish-speaking population. This study aimed to establish the psychometric properties among Colombian university students. Method: The goodness of fit of four latent structure models of the Short Health Anxiety Inventory was tested using confirmatory factor analysis in a sample of 1004 Colombian university students. Results: The results show that the original model's structure does not fit well (CFI = .808; RMSEA = .074), and the reliability was .796 and .703 for the original two variables. Conclusions: The findings do not support the utilization of the Colombian version of the Short Health Anxiety Inventory by researchers and clinicians among Colombian university students.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Introduction: There is a close relationship between mental health and eating styles. Mental health indicators such as anxious and depressive symptomatology have reported direct effects on eating styles that promote excess malnutrition such as emotional or restrictive eating. The aim was to analyze the effect of anxious and depressive symptomatology on eating styles in women and men from northern and central Chile. Method: Nine hundred and ten adults living in northern and central Chile participated in the study. The Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire (DEBQ), the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) and the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) were administered. The analysis of the global model of the relationship between variables was carried out using structural equation modeling. Results: The structural model presented adequate goodness-of-fit indicators, anxious symptomatology had a direct and significant effect on emotional eating, external eating and restrictive eating. On the other hand, depressive symptomatology, did not present significant effects on any eating style. Conclusions: As anxiety levels increase, levels of all eating styles increase. Depression, could interact mediating the relationship by the emotional context that generates the depressive symptomatology.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Introduction: Adverse or favourable rearing conditions early in life affect emotional response during adolescence. To study the effect of early rearing on emotional response, animal models such as maternal separation (MS) and social enrichment (SE) by community nesting have been useful. However, the comparison of the effect of MS and SE on anxiety-related behaviours in adolescent rats is unknown. Objective: This study aimed to assess the effects of MS and SE on the emotional response of adolescent rats exposed to the elevated plus-maze test (EPM). Method: Pregnant Wistar rats were randomly distributed into three groups according to the rearing condition. In the MS group, pups were separated daily from their dams for 180 minutes, from postnatal day (P) 2 to 14. In the SE group, two females that gave birth synchronously were housed in a cage with a litter of eight pups. Females from control standard housing (SH) were individually housed and kept with their offspring until weaning (P23). On P32, anxiety-related measures were evaluated using an EPM. Results: MS and SE increase anxiety-related behaviours and locomotion in rats exposed to the EPM. SE had sex-dependent effects on anxiety-related measures, increasing vertical activity in females and horizontal activity in males. MS but not SE increased body weight gain in female rats. Conclusion: Adverse or favourable rearing conditions early in life may result in an increased anxiety phenotype in the EPM during adolescence. It is likely that the favourable effect of SE depends on the number of dams per communal nest.

ABSTRACT

SUMMARY OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the fear, anxiety, and knowledge level in women who underwent gynecological surgical procedures during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 188 women who underwent a gynecologic surgical operation in Muğla, Turkey. Data were collected by using demographics and obstetric detail form, questionnaire on knowledge, attitudes, and practice toward COVID-19, and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory-I (STAI-I). RESULTS: Most of the women perceived their surgical process as very urgent. Women felt fear mostly for being infected with the virus, and they were afraid of transmitting COVID-19 to another one. The COVID-19 knowledge scores of women who had undergone cancer surgery were statistically significantly higher than others (p=0.017). The STAI-I scores of women increased as their COVID-19 knowledge scores increased (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated that women were afraid of COVID-19 infection during gynecological operation and due to hospitalization, sociodemographic characteristics affected the knowledge levels about COVID-19 infection, and the anxiety levels of the women. Planning appropriate interventions to decrease the fear and anxiety of women who undergo gynecological surgery during the pandemic is important to ensure that women adhere to their treatment and follow-up in the postoperative period.

ABSTRACT

This study investigated the anxiolytic and anticonvulsant effects and safety profile of limonene enantiomers and their oxidized derivatives. The toxicity test was performed by monitoring the animals for 96 hours, with no deaths or significant toxicity observed up to the highest dose, which allowed the determination of the LD50. Doses of 4, 20 and 40 mg/kg were tested, with no toxicity observed up to 96h (LD50 > 40 mg/kg). Anxiolytic activity was measured in a preference test for light and dark areas, and the effect of the compounds was evaluated in the presence of serotonergic antagonists. The (S)-(-)-LIM and (R)-(+)-LIM enantiomers showed anxiolytic effects, with (S)-(-)-LIM being effective at all doses. In the anticonvulsant test, the oxidized derivatives, such as perilyl acid (PAC), significantly delayed PTZ-induced seizures, an effect blocked by flumazenil (FMZ). The oxidized derivatives, especially perilyl acid (PAC), showed anxiolytic effects at all doses and significantly delayed the three PTZ-induced seizure events. This effect was blocked by FMZ, suggesting a relationship between PAC and the GABAergic pathway. PAC, being the most oxidized derivative, was the most effective for both anxiety and delaying seizure progression, suggesting that oxidation of limonene compounds may increase their therapeutic efficacy.

ABSTRACT

Anxiety can be a protective emotion when animals face aversive conditions, but is commonly associated with various neuropsychiatric disorders when pathologically exacerbated. Drug repurposing has emerged as a valuable strategy based on utilizing the existing pharmaceuticals for new therapeutic purposes. Ketamine, traditionally used as an anesthetic, acts as a non-competitive antagonist of the glutamate N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor, and shows potential anxiolytic and antidepressant effects at subanesthetic doses. However, the influence of ketamine on multiple behavioral domains in vertebrates is not completely understood. Here, we evaluated the potential modulatory effect of ketamine on the spatio-temporal exploratory dynamics and homebase-related behaviors in adult zebrafish using the open field test (OFT). Animals were exposed to subanesthetic concentrations of ketamine (0, 2, 20, and 40 mg/L) for 20 min and their locomotion-, exploration- and homebase-related behaviors were assessed in a single 30-min trial. Our data revealed that acute ketamine (20 and 40 mg/L) induced hyperlocomotion, as verified by the increased total distance traveled. All concentrations tested elicited circling behavior, a stereotyped-like response which gradually reduced across the periods of test. We also observed modulatory effects of ketamine on the spatio-temporal exploratory pattern, in which the reduced thigmotaxis and homebase activity, associated with the increased average length of trips, suggest anxiolytic-like effects. Collectively, our findings support the modulatory effects of ketamine on the spatio-temporal exploratory activity, and corroborate the utility of homebase-related measurements to evaluate the behavioral dynamics in zebrafish models.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Prenatal and postnatal exposure to drugs such as cocaine is a public health problem that causes deficits in brain development and function in humans and animals. One of the main effects of prenatal and postnatal cocaine exposure is increased vulnerability to developing the substance use disorder at an early age. Furthermore, the negative emotional states associated with cocaine withdrawal increase the fragility of patients to relapse into drug abuse. In this sense, prenatal and postnatal cocaine exposure enhanced the cocaine- and nicotine-induced locomotor activity and locomotor sensitization, and rats exposed prenatally to cocaine displayed an increase in anxiety- and depressive-like behaviors in adulthood (PND 60-70). OBJECTIVE: Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the effect of prenatal and postnatal cocaine exposure on anxiety- and depressive-like behaviors at different ages (30, 60, 90, and 120 days of age) in rats. METHODS: The study was divided into two stages: prenatal and postnatal. In the prenatal stage, a group of pregnant female Wistar rats was administered daily from GD0 to GD21 cocaine (cocaine pre-exposure group), and another group of pregnant female rats was administered daily saline (saline pre-exposure group). In the postnatal stage, during lactation (PND0 to PND21), pregnant rats received administration of cocaine or saline, respectively. Of the litters resulting from the cocaine pre-exposed and saline pre-exposed pregnant female groups, only the male rats were used for the recording of the anxiety- and depressive-like behaviors at different postnatal ages (30, 60, 90, and 120 days), representative of adolescence, adult, adulthood, and old age. RESULTS: The study found that prenatal and postnatal cocaine exposure generated age-dependent enhancement in anxiety- and depressive-like behaviors, being greater in older adult (PND 120) rats than in adolescent (PND 30) or adults (PND 60-90) rats. CONCLUSIONS: This suggests that prenatal and postnatal cocaine exposure increases anxiety- and depressive-like behaviors, which may increase the vulnerability of subjects to different types of drugs in young and adult age.

ABSTRACT

Maternal obesity during perinatal period increases the risk of metabolic and behavioral deleterious outcomes in the offspring, since it is critical for brain development, maturation, and reorganization. These processes are highly modulated by the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which comprises the main lipid ligands anandamide and 2-arachidonoylglycerol, cannabinoid receptors 1 and 2 (CB1R and CB2R), and several metabolizing enzymes. The ECS is overactivated in obesity and it contributes to the physiological activity of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, promoting stress relief. We have previously demonstrated that maternal high-fat diet during gestation and lactation programmed the food preference for fat in adolescent male offspring and adult male and female offspring. In the present study, we hypothesized that maternal diet-induced obesity would induce sex-specific changes of the ECS in the hypothalamus and dorsal hippocampus of rat offspring associated with dysregulation of the HPA axis and stress-related behavior in adolescence. Rat dams were fed a control (C) or an obesogenic high-fat high-sugar diet (OD) for nine weeks prior to mating and throughout gestation and lactation. Maternal obesity differentially altered the CB1R in the hypothalamus of neonate offspring, with significant increase in male but not in female pups, associated with decreased CB2R prior to obesity development. In adolescence, maternal obesity induced anxiety-like behavior only in adolescent females which was associated with increased content of CB1R in the dorsal hippocampus. Our findings suggest that the early origins of anxiety disorders induced by maternal exposome is associated with dysregulation of the brain ECS, with females being more susceptible.

ABSTRACT

Chronic neuropathic pain arises from changes in the somatosensory nervous system and can lead to disability and intense physical and emotional suffering. Recognized as a painful syndrome, its causes are diverse, ranging from stroke, trauma, and diabetes mellitus to unknown origins. It tends to be more common in women, and it is estimated that the number of people affected by this condition increases every year as the population ages. Treatments are based on pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions; however, the therapeutic plan does not always offer satisfactory relief, and learning to live with pain is, in most cases, the only option. The treatment aims to provide relief from symptoms, and alternative measures such as physiotherapy, physical exercise, and psychological support are strongly recommended. The coronavirus disease (COVID)-19 pandemic exacerbated the pain process, impacting quality of life, generating emotional problems, and potentially contributing to the increased incidence of neuropathic pain. In this context, the narrative review aimed to explore the complex panorama of chronic neuropathic pain, not only from a physiological perspective but also encompassing the psychological perspective and actions related to the pain process.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to compare diet-induced obesity (DIO) models in zebrafish and investigate the complications and differences between sexes in biochemical and inflammatory parameters. METHODS: Adult animals of both sexes were divided into four groups (n = 50) and fed for eight weeks: control group 1: Artemia sp. (15-30 mg/day/fish); control group 2: commercial fish food (3.5% of average weight); obesity group 1: pasteurized egg yolk powder + soybean oil (5% of average weight); obesity group 2: Artemia sp. (60-120 mg/day/fish). Dietary intake, caloric intake and efficiency, body mass index, biochemical, inflammatory, behavioral, histopathological, and stereological parameters, and inflammation-related gene expression were investigated. RESULTS: Obesity group 1 was the most indicated to investigate changes in the anxious behavioral profile (p < 0.05), triglyceride elevation [52.67 (1.2) mg/dL], adipocyte hypertrophy [67.8 (18.1) µm2; p = 0.0004], and intestinal inflammation. Obesity group 2 was interesting to investigate in terms of weight gain [167 mg; p < 0.0001), changes in fasting glucose [48.33 (4.14) mg/dL; p = 0.003), and inflammatory parameters [IL-6: 4.24 (0.18) pg/mL; p = 0.0015]. CONCLUSIONS: Furthermore, both DIO models evaluated in the present study were effective in investigating hepatic steatosis. The data also highlighted that sex influences inflammatory changes and fasting blood glucose levels, which were higher in males (p > 0.05). The results show new metabolic routes to be explored in relation to DIO in zebrafish.

ABSTRACT

Antidepressant response is a multifactorial process related to biological and environmental factors, where brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) may play an important role in modulating depressive and anxious symptoms. We aimed to analyze how BDNF impacts antidepressant response, considering the levels of anxiety. METHODS: A total of 40 depressed adults were included. We evaluated initial serum BDNF, anxiety through the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), and the severity of depressive symptoms by the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS). Participants received antidepressant treatment for 8 weeks, and response to treatment was evaluated according to the final HDRS scores. RESULTS: Basal BDNF was higher in responders compared to non-responder depressed patients, in addition to being inversely associated with the severity of anxiety and depression. CONCLUSIONS: Baseline BDNF serum is an adequate predictive factor for response to antidepressant treatment with SSRI, with lower pre-treatment levels of BDNF associated with higher anxiety symptoms after treatment. Stress levels could influence the response to treatment, but its association was not conclusive.

ABSTRACT

Ethanol consumption is among the first five substances with higher risk associated with diseases, disability, and death in the world. Anxiety behavior has been linked to ethanol-addictive conduct. The aim of the present study was to evaluate three strains with differential anxiety behavior: a Wild-type strain; a "Reactive" strain, with an increase in anxiety-related behaviors; and a "Non-Reactive" strain, with lower anxiety-related behaviors, before and after the voluntary consumption of ethanol (10%) protocol. To evaluate anxiety, animals were exposed to the elevated plus-maze 24 h before and after the consumption protocol. On the voluntary consumption of ethanol protocol, the animals were exposed to a water and an ethanol bottle. The weight of the liquid consumed daily for 40 days was registered. Results: all strains increased ethanol vs water consumption: Wild-type: day 8; R: day 10; NR: day 31. Ethanol consumption reduced the number and percentage of open arms entries only on the Wild-type strain. Conclusion: anxiety can predispose to an increase in ethanol consumption and to the maintenance of anxiety-related behaviors.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the impact of counseling and preoperative education on reducing anxiety in patients undergoing surgery for gynecologic cancer. METHODS: In this randomized clinical trial, patients with gynecological tumors undergoing surgical treatment between 15 and 60 days preoperatively, were included. The group was randomized to receive preoperative routine orientation plus preoperative counseling and education by nursing (experimental group [EG]) or receive preoperative routine orientation only (control group [CG]). We stratified the groups by surgical approach: open, laparoscopy, and robotic. We excluded patients treated in another service and with the need for an intensive care unit after surgery. We used the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) to evaluate symptoms of anxiety and depression. The severity of symptoms was evaluated using the Edmonton Symptom Assessment System (ESAS-Br). RESULTS: We analyzed 54 women (CG 27, EG 27). No significant differences were observed regarding ESAS scores (total, physical, emotional, well-being, and anxiety) between preoperative and postoperative evaluation. However, in the EG, comparing the preoperative versus postoperative moments, there was a significant reduction in total, emotional, and anxiety scores of ESAS (p = 0.012; p = 0.003; p = 0.001). No difference in anxiety symptoms by HADS scale was noted between the two groups, comparing preoperative and postoperative moments, CG (40.7% and 22.2%) and EG (37.0% and 25.9%) (p = 0.78; p = 0.75), respectively. Also, in depression symptoms (HADS scale), we found no difference comparing preoperative and postoperative moments (p = 0.34; p > 0.99). When we stratified by surgical approach or time between intervention and surgery ( ≤ 15, > 15 to ≤ 30, and > 30 days), no difference was observed in the anxiety and depression symptoms evaluation, in both groups. CONCLUSIONS: The preoperative education by nurse orientation reduced the total, emotional, and anxiety symptoms of ESAS score between preoperative and postoperative moments. However, by the HADS scale, there was no difference in anxiety and depression symptoms.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, some workers had the opportunity to work from home, while others remained in on-site work. The aim of the present study was to compare the psychosocial work aspects, work ability, mental health conditions and SARS-CoV-2 infection rates of Brazilian workers in remote and on-site work through a longitudinal study with quarterly follow-up assessments over a 12-month period. METHOD: A convenience sample of 1,211 workers from different economic sectors participated in the study, 897 of whom (74.1%) worked from home and 314 (25.9%) remained in on-site work. Psychosocial work aspects were assessed using the Copenhagen Psychosocial Questionnaire (COPSOQ). Work ability was assessed using the Work Ability Index (WAI) and the Work Ability Score (WAS). Mental health conditions and SARS-CoV-2 infection rate were recorded based on self-reported medical diagnoses. Online questionnaires were answered from June 2020 to September 2021, involving two waves of the COVID-19 pandemic. The groups were compared using chi-square tests, t-tests, and two-way ANOVA. RESULTS: In the first wave of the pandemic, remote workers reported more quantitative demands and work-family conflicts, whereas on-site workers reported more emotional demands, low development of new skills, low commitment, low predictability, low recognition, and low satisfaction. They also reported greater occurrences of unwanted sexual attention, threats of violence, and physical violence. In the second wave, the remote group continued to report high work-family conflicts, whereas the on-site group reported - in addition to the results of the 1st wave - low influence at work, low quality of leadership, and burnout. No significant difference was found between groups with regards to the WAI in either wave. A significant difference was found for the WAS between the 3rd and 12th months (P < 0.01) in both groups. No significant differences were found between groups for the prevalence of anxiety, depression, burnout/stress, insomnia, panic syndrome, and eating disorders, except for the prevalence of insomnia at the 12-month follow-up, with higher rates in the remote group (P = 0.03). SARS-CoV-2 infection was significantly lower in the remote group (11.3%) compared to the on- site (16.9%) group (P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Psychosocial work aspects differed between remote and on-site workers. Work ability and mental health conditions were similar between groups. ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Depression and anxiety are among the most prevalent mental health conditions in Brazil. Both are associated with poor quality of life (HRQoL) and challenges in disease management for chronic illnesses, including Behçet's disease (BD). This study aimed to evaluate depression, anxiety, and HRQoL in BD patients from a non-endemic area. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: This case-control study included adult BD patients from Brazilian tertiary center and healthy controls (HC). All patients fulfilled the ISG and ICBD diagnostic criteria. Depression, anxiety and quality of life were assessed using BDI, HADS, SF-36, and physical capacity with the HAQ. RESULTS: We enrolled 58 BD patients (60% female, mean age 46.1) and 96 HC (74% female, mean age 44). High rates of depression and anxiety were observed in BD patients, correlating with disease activity, younger age, absence of a partner, shorter disease duration, and lower income. BD patients showed significant HRQoL restrictions, particularly in physical and emotional roles, compared to HC. Longer disease duration was correlated with better HRQoL. CONCLUSION: High rates of depression and anxiety were observed in BD patients, negatively impacting HRQoL, particularly in those with higher disease activity. Further study and clinical attention are warranted to enhance patient care and outcomes.

ABSTRACT

Background: Elevated anxiety levels are common in patients on mechanical ventilation (MV) and may challenge recovery. Research suggests music-based interventions may reduce anxiety during MV. However, studies investigating specific music therapy techniques, addressing psychological and physiological well-being in patients on MV, are scarce. Methods: This three-arm randomized clinical pilot study was conducted with MV patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of Hospital San José in Bogotá, Colombia between March 7, 2022, and July 11, 2022. Patients were divided into three groups: intervention group 1 (IG1), music-assisted relaxation; intervention group 2 (IG2), patient-preferred therapeutic music listening; and control group (CG), standard care. The main outcome measure was the 6-item State-Anxiety Inventory. Secondary outcomes were: pain (measured with a visual analog scale), resilience (measured with the Brief Resilience Scale), agitation/sedation (measured with the Richmond Agitation-Sedation Scale), vital signs (including heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, and respiratory rate), days of MV, extubation success, and days in the ICU. Additionally, three patients underwent electroencephalography during the interventions. Results: Data from 23 patients were analyzed in this study. The age range of the patients was 24.0-84.0 years, with a median age of 66.0 years (interquartile range: 57.0-74.0). Of the 23 patients, 19 were female (82.6%). No statistically significant differences between the groups were observed for anxiety (P=0.330), pain (P=0.624), resilience (P=0.916), agitation/sedation (P=0.273), length of ICU stay (P=0.785), or vital signs. A statistically significant difference between the groups was found for days of MV (P=0.019). Electroencephalography measurements showed a trend toward delta and theta band power decrease for two patients and a power increase on both beta frequencies (slow and fast) in the frontal areas of the brain for one patient. Conclusions: In this pilot study, music therapy did not significantly affect the anxiety levels in patients on MV. However, the interventions were widely accepted by the staff, patients, and caregivers and were safe, considering the critical medical status of the participants. Further large-scale randomized controlled trials are needed to investigate the potential benefits of music therapeutic interventions in this population.Trial Registration ISRCTN trial registry identifier: ISRCTN16964680.

ABSTRACT

Objective: The aim of this study was twofold: first, to examine the association between perceived barriers to physical activity (PA) practice and depression, anxiety and stress in a sample of Spanish adolescents; and second, to determine which barriers are specifically associated with depression, anxiety and stress. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted with 765 adolescents aged 12-17 (55.6% girls) in the Valle of Ricote, Murcia, Spain. Depression, anxiety and stress symptoms were assessed using the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21), with validated cut points employed to determine the presence of each of these mental conditions. The perception of barriers to PA was assessed using a validated questionnaire for the Spanish adolescent population. Results: The barrier 'Because I feel that my physical appearance is worse than that of others' was related to a higher likelihood of having depression (OR=2.41; 95% CI 1.35 to 4.28; p=0.003), anxiety (OR=2.65; 95% CI 1.51 to 4.71; p=0.001) and stress (OR=2.82; 95% CI 1.59 to 5.07; p<0.001). Similarly, the barrier 'Because nobody encourages me to engage in physical activity' was related to a higher likelihood of having depression (OR=1.92; 95% CI 1.08 to 3.43; p=0.026), anxiety (OR=1.97; 95% CI 1.11 to 3.50; p=0.021) and stress (OR=1.99; 95% CI 1.12 to 3.59; p=0.021). Conclusion: Perceived barriers to PA related to physical appearance and social support seem to be associated with a greater likelihood of depression, anxiety and stress among Spanish adolescents.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: We aim to evaluate whether a wide range of baseline mental disorders predict Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) one to three years later, among university students. METHODS: Prospective cohort study with a follow-up period of one to three years (September 2018-June 2022) in 6 Mexican universities. Participants were first-year university students (N=2,144) free of symptoms indicative of IGD at entry (baseline). Ten mental disorders (bipolar, major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, alcohol use disorder, drug use disorder, binging and/or purging, intermittent explosive disorder, psychotic experiences, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) at baseline were the main risk factors for IGD at the end of the follow-up. We used Cox regression to model the IGD incidence rate. RESULTS: Any mental disorder at baseline was associated with an increase in 2.33 times (1.26-4.31) the rate of IGD 1 to 3 years later. Several individual disorders were associated with rates of IGD in multiple models, with comorbid conditions diminishing most of these associations. CONCLUSIONS: Only major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder remained associated with a new case of IGD. Discrepant results from available longitudinal studies on the role of specific mental disorders in the development of IGD needs to be further investigated.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Clinical nurses have symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety and depression, which seriously affect their physical and mental health. Narrative therapy (NT), a therapy for trauma-related psychological disorders, may be an effective intervention. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of NT on improving PTSD symptoms, perceived stress, anxiety and depression in nurses. METHODS: A total of 92 participants who were clinical nurses and had positive PTSD symptom screening results were randomly assigned (1:1) to the intervention and control groups. The intervention group received NT and a psychological stress leaflet, while the control group received only a psychological stress leaflet. PTSD, perceived stress, anxiety, and depression were measured before and after the intervention to assess the effect of NT. RESULTS: After the intervention, the intervention group showed significantly lower levels of PTSD symptoms (P=0.025), perceived stress (P=0.033), anxiety (P=0.004), and depression (P=0.015) compared with the control group. Regarding the dichotomous outcomes of PTSD, anxiety, and depression, there was a statistically significant decrease in the number of positive cases of PTSD (P=0.030) and anxiety (P=0.002), while there was no statistically significant change in the number of positive cases of depression (P=0.060). CONCLUSIONS: NT is expected to alleviate PTSD symptoms, stress, anxiety, and depression among clinical frontline nurses, and healthcare professionals should consider applying NT to improve nurses' mental health.
