ABSTRACT
This study evaluated the accuracy of mammary carcinoma diagnoses in female dogs through cytological exams (FNA) compared to histopathological diagnoses. The presence of neoplasia and the effectiveness of procedures at the Pathology Laboratory of the Veterinary Hospital of the FMVZ of Unesp Botucatu, were analyzed. Between 2015 and 2020, a total of 1100 mammary neoplasms were identified, of which 569 were mammary carcinomas. Fifty cytological samples were selected and analyzed to determine occurrence, age at presentation, and the most affected breeds, as well as to verify the obtained diagnoses. Mammary carcinoma constituted for 51.72% of the registered cases. A higher occurrence was observed in mixed-breed female dogs, at 40.42%, followed by Poodles at 17%. The most common age at diagnosis was 10 years, and in 65.55% of cases, the dogs had not been previously spayed. 9.31% of the animals had received contraceptives, while 14% had given birth and 14.58% had presented symptoms of pseudopregnancy at some point in their lives. In the test results, a 70% agreement between cytology and histology was observed, with a 30% disagreement between them. Statistically, a sensitivity of 79.32% and a specificity of 57.14% were reflected. Intact and older female dogs represent a significant risk of developing mammary carcinoma. Although the protocol for processing and interpreting cytological samples is well established, the results do not reach the level of excellence observed in previous studies.
O estudo avaliou a precisão dos diagnósticos de carcinoma mamário em cadelas por meio de exames citológicos (PAAF) em comparação com diagnósticos histopatológicos. Foi analisada a presencia da neoplasia e a eficácia dos procedimentos no Laboratório de Patologia do Hospital Veterinário da FMVZ da Unesp, Botucatu. Foram registradas 1100 neoplasias mamárias entre 2015 e 2020, das quais 569 foram carcinomas mamários. Cinquenta amostras citopatológicas foram selecionadas e analisadas para determinar a ocorrência, idade de apresentação e raças mais afetadas, além de verificar os diagnósticos obtidos. O carcinoma mamário representou 51,72% dos casos registrados. Observou-se maior ocorrência em cadelas SRD, com 40,42%, seguidas por Poodles com 17%. A idade mais comum de diagnóstico foi de 10 anos, e em 65,55% dos casos as cadelas não haviam sido castradas previamente. 9,31% dos animais haviam recebido contraceptivos, enquanto 14% já haviam dado à luz e 14,58% apresentaram sintomas de pseudociese em algum momento de suas vidas. Nos resultados dos exames, foi observada uma concordância de 70% entre citologia e histologia, com 30% de discordância entre eles. Estatisticamente, foi refletida uma sensibilidade de 79,32% e uma especificidade de 57,14%. Cadelas intactas e mais velhas representam um risco significativo no desenvolvimento de carcinoma mamário. Embora o protocolo de processamento e interpretação de amostras citopatológicas esteja bem estabelecido, os resultados não alcançam o nível de excelência observado em estudos anteriores.

INTRODUCTION: The International Serous Fluid Cytopathology Reporting System (TIS) was developed to standardize communication among health professionals reporting analyses of serous fluid samples. The categories include non-diagnosis (ND), negative for malignancy (NFM), atypia of undetermined significance (AUS), suspected malignancy (SFM), and malignant (MAL). Each category was characterized by a risk of malignancy (ROM). METHODS: We performed a literature review to analyze studies related to TIS using several sources, including PubMed, followed by a search of relevant cytopathology journal websites (American Cancer Society, Diagnostic Cytopathology, Journal of the American Society of Cytopathology, and Acta Cytologica and Cytopathology). The search included articles published between January 2020 and December 2023, using the terms "international AND serous fluid system." RESULTS: We identified 257 articles, of which 20 addressed the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The overall ROMs for each category were 23.55% for ND, 16.46% for NFM, 50.78% for AUS, 91.34% for SFM, and 98.21% for MAL. CONCLUSION: Considering the TIS-recommended ROM rates, the ND category was between the suggested intervals, while the SFM category rate was bigger than expected. The other categories (NFM, AUS, and MAL) were below expected values. SFM and MAL had a stronger association with MAL results. New studies are needed to determine each category's ROM rate from TIS accurately.

Two novel members of the subfamily Betarhabdovirinae, family Rhabdoviridae, were identified in Brazil. Overall, their genomes have the typical organization 3'-N-P-P3-M-G-L-5' observed in mono-segmented plant-infecting rhabdoviruses. In aristolochia-associated cytorhabdovirus (AaCV), found in the liana aristolochia (Aristolochia gibertii Hook), an additional short orphan ORF encoding a transmembrane helix was detected between P3 and M. The AaCV genome and inferred encoded proteins share the highest identity values, consistently < 60%, with their counterparts of the yerba mate chlorosis-associated virus (Cytorhabdovirus flaviyerbamate). The second virus, false jalap virus (FaJV), was detected in the herbaceous plant false jalap (Mirabilis jalapa L.) and represents together with tomato betanucleorhabdovirus 2, originally found in tomato plants in Slovenia, a tentative new species of the genus Betanucleorhabdovirus. FaJV particles accumulate in the perinuclear space, and electron-lucent viroplasms were observed in the nuclei of the infected cells. Notably, distinct from typical rhabdoviruses, most virions of AaCV were observed to be non-enclosed within membrane-bounded cavities. Instead, they were frequently seen in close association with surfaces of mitochondria or peroxisomes. Unlike FaJV, AaCV was successfully graft-transmitted to healthy plants of three species of the genus Aristolochia, while mechanical and seed transmission proved unsuccessful for both viruses. Data suggest that these viruses belong to two new tentative species within the subfamily Betarhabdovirinae.

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic prompted changes in medical practice, with a reduction in cytopathology volumes and a relative increase in the malignancy rate during lockdown and the initial postlockdown period. To date, no study has evaluated the impact of these changes on the volume of rapid on-site evaluation (ROSE) or on the frequency of cases according to The Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology (TBSRTC) categories after vaccination. METHODS: Ultrasound-guided thyroid fine-needle aspiration (FNA) and ROSE assessments performed from January 2019 to May 2022 were evaluated retrospectively according to TBSRTC categories for three periods: prepandemic (period 1), from transmission to expansion (period 2), and after vaccination (period 3). RESULTS: There were 7531 nodules from 5815 patients. FNA cases increased throughout the pandemic despite a drop during lockdown. The frequency of TBSRTC categories changed. Nondiagnostic cases had an increase of 18.1% in period 2 and 76.2% after vaccination compared with prepandemic levels. Malignant cases increased from 2.3% to 4.2% in period 2 and to 5.1% in period 3, representing increases of 83.1% and 121.2%, respectively, compared with period 1. Data corrected by time showed increases in categories IV, V, and VI and a decrease in benign nodules during the two pandemic periods. ROSE was performed in 787 cases during the prepandemic period, and there were decreases of 29.4% and 22.8% in periods 2 and 3, respectively. The ROSE-to-category I ratio was reduced significantly after vaccination. CONCLUSIONS: Increased volume with sustained lower benign rates and higher malignant rates before and after vaccination indicate better selection of patients for FNA. A worse adequacy rate was correlated with a decrease in the number of ROSE assessments.

This study compares the effects of virus-cell interactions among SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern (VOCs) isolated in Brazil in 2021, hypothesizing a correlation between cellular alterations and mortality and between viral load and transmissibility. For this purpose, reference isolates of Alpha, Gamma, Zeta, and Delta variants were inoculated into monolayers of Vero-E6 cells. Viral RNA was quantified in cell supernatants by RTâPCR, and infected cells were analyzed by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) for qualitative and quantitative evaluation of cellular changes 24, 48, and 72 hours postinfection (hpi). Ultrastructural analyses showed that all variants of SARS-CoV-2 altered the structure and function of mitochondria, nucleus, and rough endoplasmic reticulum of cells. Monolayers infected with the Delta variant showed the highest number of modified cells and the greatest statistically significant differences compared to those of other variants. Viral particles were observed in the cytosol and the cell membrane in 100 % of the cells at 48 hpi. Alpha showed the highest mean particle diameter (79 nm), and Gamma and Delta were the smallest (75 nm). Alpha and Gamma had the highest particle frequency per field at 48 hpi, while the same was observed for Zeta and Delta at 72 hpi and 24 hpi, respectively. The cycle threshold of viral RNA varied among the target protein, VOC, and time of infection. The findings presented here demonstrate that all four VOCs evaluated caused ultrastructural changes in Vero-E6 cells, which were more prominent when infection occured with the Delta variant.

SUMMARY OBJECTIVE: Thoracic ultrasonography is widely used in imaging peripheral lesions and invasive interventional procedures. The aim of this study was to assess the diagnostic value of thoracic ultrasonography-guided transthoracic needle aspiration biopsy and the factors affecting the diagnosis of peripheral tumoral lung lesions. METHODS: The lesion size, biopsy needle type, number of blocks, complications, and pathology results were compared in 83 patients between January 2015 and July 2018. The cases with pathological non-diagnosis and definite pathological diagnosis were determined. For the assessment of the factors affecting diagnosis, the size of the lesions and the biopsy needle type were evaluated. Biopsy preparations containing non-diagnostic atypical cells were referred to a cytopathologist. The effect of the cytopathological examination on the diagnosis was also evaluated. RESULTS: Pathological diagnosis was made in 66.3% of the cases; cell type could not be determined in 22.9% of the cases, and they were referred to a cytopathologist. After the cytopathologist's examination, the diagnosis rate increased to 80.7%. Diagnosis rates were higher when using tru-cut than Chiba and higher in cases with tumor size >2 cm than smaller. CONCLUSION: Thoracic ultrasonography-guided transthoracic needle aspiration biopsy is a preferred approach to the diagnosis of peripheral tumoral lung lesions, given its high diagnostic rate, in addition to being cheap, highly suitable for bedside use, and safe, and the lack of radiation exposure.

Ultrastructural features of striatal white matter and cells in an in vivo model of glutaric acidemia type I created by intracerebral injection of glutaric acid (GA) were analyzed by transmission electron microscopy and immunohistochemistry. To test if the white matter damage observed in this model could be prevented, we administered the synthetic chemopreventive molecule CH38 ((E)-3-(4-methylthiophenyl)-1-phenyl-2-propen-1-one) to newborn rats, previous to an intracerebroventricular injection of GA. The study was done when striatal myelination was incipient and when it was already established (at 12 and 45 days post-injection [DPI], respectively). Results obtained indicate that that the ultrastructure of astrocytes and neurons did not appear significantly affected by the GA bolus. Instead, in oligodendrocytes, the most prominent GA-dependent injury defects included endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and nuclear envelope swelling at 12 DPI. Altered and reduced immunoreactivities against heavy neurofilament (NF), proteolipid protein (PLP), and myelin-associated glycoprotein (MAG) together with axonal bundle fragmentation and decreased myelin were also found at both ages analyzed. CH38 by itself did not affect striatal cells or axonal packages. However, the group of rats that received CH38 before GA did not show evidence neither of ER stress nor nuclear envelope dilation in oligodendrocytes, and axonal bundles appeared less fragmented. In this group, labeling of NF and PLP was similar to the controls. These results suggest that the CH38 molecule is a candidate drug to prevent or decrease the neural damage elicited by a pathological increase of GA in the brain. Optimization of the treatments and identification of the mechanisms underlying CH38 protective effects will open new therapeutic windows to protect myelin, which is a vulnerable target of numerous nervous system diseases.

INTRODUCTION: Digital cytopathology is being progressively implemented in centres worldwide, but impediments such as the three-dimensionality of specimens and the size of scanned images have prevented its use from becoming widespread. This study aimed to validate the use of digital whole slide image scanning of cytopathology samples for routine sign-out. METHODS: Specimens were scanned using the Leica Aperio GT 450 System. The following sample types were used: liquid-based cytology, direct conventional smears from fine needle aspirates and cytospins. Cases were validated by the same pathologist who originally rendered the conventional diagnosis, with a washout of at least 3 months. Final digital diagnoses were compared to the original analogical diagnoses, and cases were considered concordant up to a one-degree difference between the original and digital diagnoses. Reasons for the unsuccessful scanning of slides were also noted. The technical procedures followed the College of American Pathologists' guidelines for digital pathology validation. RESULTS: A total of 730 slides from 383 cases (337 female, 51 male; median age 42) were successfully scanned. These cases consisted of the following sample types: 81 (21.1%) conventional smears, 240 (62.7%) liquid-based cytology samples and 62 (16.2%) cytospins. There were only five discordant cases, with a 98.7% agreement between original and digital diagnoses using the difference rate of up to one degree. Seventy-seven slides (10.5%) had to be rescanned due to technical problems. The main reasons for unsuccessful scanning were paucicellular samples (44; 57.1%), the thickness of the smears (18; 23.4%) and issues with the coverslip (15; 19.5%). CONCLUSION: Cytological specimens can be successfully scanned and used for digital pathology, with excellent agreement with the original diagnoses.

BACKGROUND: Cytopathologic analysis is feasible and provides detailed morphological characterisation of head and neck lesions. AIMS: To integrate the available data published on fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) used for the diagnosis of plasma cell neoplasms (PCN) of the head and neck region. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Searches on PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Scopus were performed to compile data from case reports/case series published in English. The Joanna Briggs Institute tool was used for the critical appraisal of studies. RESULTS: A total of 82 studies comprising 102 patients were included in this review. There was a predilection for men (68.6%) (male/female ratio: 2.1:1). Individuals in their 50s (29.4%), 60s (22.5%), and 70s (22.5%) were more often affected. The thyroid gland (26.2%) was the main anatomical location, followed by scalp (15.5%), neck/cervical region (15.5%), jaws (13.6%), and major salivary glands (13.6%). For FNAC analysis, a smear was employed in 41 (40.6%) cases and a cell block was used in four (3.9%). In 56 (55.4%) reports, no cytological methods were available. Morphologically, 34 (56.7%) cases had a diagnosis of PCN with agreement between cytopathology and histopathology. The rate of wrong diagnoses when using cytology was 27.5%. Immunophenotyping was performed in 49 (48%) of the cases. The 69-month disease-free survival rate was 60.2%, while the 27-month overall survival rate was 64.1%. CONCLUSION: This study reinforces that FNAC can be an ancillary tool in the first step towards the diagnosis of PCN of the head and neck region, especially when applying a cell block for cytological analysis.

ABSTRACT: Mast cell tumors are one of the most common neoplasia in dogs and cytopathology and/or histopathology examinations are used for diagnosis. Histologic grading is considered the gold standard test to predict the prognosis of this neoplasia. However, studies have been conducted using the cytological grading system to provide similar information in a faster, less invasive, and more accessible way. This study aimed to investigate cytological graduation and correlate it with histological grading and the survival time of dogs diagnosed with cutaneous mast cell tumors at the Veterinary Hospital of "Universidade Federal de Uberlândia" over five years. For that, cytological and histological slides from 72 animals were reviewed. The statistical methods used were the kappa test for agreement between grading systems, the Kaplan-Meier for survival time, Cox regression for comparison of cytological and histological grades and survival time. The cytological grading when compared to the two-tier histologic grading, high and low grades, had a moderate agreement (kappa 0.566). When the correlation between survival time and the cytological grade was evaluated, there was a higher death rate in the group with high-grade mast cell tumors compared to low grade, pointing to a correlation between survival time and cytological grade (p=0.009). In conclusion, the cytological grade is useful to treatment planning and providing prognostic information that precedes tumor removal, showing a good correlation with the two-tier histologic grading and with the survival time of the animals.
RESUMO: O mastocitoma é uma das neoplasias cutâneas mais comum nos cães e os exames citopatológicos e/ou histopatológicos são utilizados para diagnóstico. A graduação histológica é considerada padrão ouro para prever o prognóstico dessa neoplasia. Contudo, estudos têm sido realizados visando utilizar graduação citológica para fornecer informações semelhantes de maneira rápida, menos invasiva e mais acessível. Esse trabalho objetivou realizar graduação citológica e correlacionar com as graduações histológicas e com a sobrevida de cães diagnosticados com mastocitoma cutâneo no Hospital Veterinário da Universidade Federal de Uberlândia durante 5 anos. Para isso, lâminas de citologia e histologia de mastocitomas de 72 animais foram revisadas. Os métodos estatísticos utilizados foram teste kappa para concordância entre os sistemas de graduação, método Kaplan-Meier para tempo de sobrevida dos animais, e análise pela regressão de Cox para comparação do grau citológico e grau histológico e o tempo de sobrevida global. A graduação citológica quando comparada com a histológica de dois níveis, alto grau e baixo grau, obteve uma concordância moderada (kappa 0,566). Na avaliação da correlação entre sobrevida e grau citológico, houve maior taxa de óbito no grupo de cães com mastocitoma de alto grau, comparado aos de baixo grau, sendo observada correlação entre a sobrevida e o grau citológico (p=0,009). Esse estudo concluiu que o grau citológico é útil para o planejamento do tratamento e para fornecer informações prognósticas que antecedem a exérese do tumor, tendo boa correlação com a graduação histológica de dois níveis e com a sobrevida dos animais.

Resumo Os técnicos em citopatologia são fundamentais para o rastreamento do câncer de colo do útero, porém existem lacunas na sua formação. Nesta revisão de literatura, com abordagem qualitativa, realizada na Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde e na SciELO, sem recorte temporal, descrevemos o histórico das políticas públicas de combate ao câncer de colo de útero, relacionando-o à história da educação profissional técnica em citopatologia, analisando as conexões entre tais sequências de eventos. Numa perspectiva histórica, a educação profissional em anatomia patológica se deu principalmente pela formação em serviço, porém o campo da formação técnica em citopatologia destoa desse modelo. Esforços diversos para estruturar os currículos na área e reduzir as discrepâncias nessa formação foram realizados. Contudo, disputas entre interesses político-econômicos, marcando a divisão técnica do trabalho no país, somadas a embates corporativos no trabalho em citopatologia, e o descompasso entre ações de educação e de rastreamento impediram a materialização efetiva desses esforços. A demanda pela incorporação de novas tecnologias acentua ainda mais a fragilidade na formação da categoria. Somente com ações governamentais concretas de formação e de regulamentação profissional será possível transformar esse cenário, favorecendo o desenvolvimento e a ampliação das campanhas de detecção precoce do câncer.
Abstract Cytopathology technicians are fundamental for cervical cancer screening, but there are gaps in their training. In this literature review, with a qualitative approach, carried out in the Virtual Health Library and in SciELO, without temporal clipping, we describe the history of public policies to combat cervical cancer, relating it to the history of technical professional education in cytopathology, analyzing the connections between such sequences of events. In a historical perspective, professional education in pathological anatomy was mainly through in-service training, but the field of technical training in cytopathology differs from this model. Various efforts have been made to structure curricula in the area and reduce discrepancies in this training. However, disputes between political and economic interests, marking the technical division of labor in the country, added to corporate clashes in the work on cytopathology, and the mismatch between education and screening actions prevented the effective materialization of these efforts. The demand for the incorporation of new technologies further accentuates the fragility in the formation of the category. Only with concrete government actions of training and professional regulation will it be possible to transform this scenario, favoring the development and expansion of campaigns for early detection of cancer in Brazil.
Resumen Los técnicos en citopatología son fundamentales para el rastreo del cáncer de cuello uterino, pero existen lagunas en su formación. En esta revisión bibliográfica, con abordaje cualitativo, realizada en la Biblioteca Virtual en Salud y en SciELO, sin marco temporal, se describe la historia de las políticas públicas de combate al cáncer de cuello uterino, relacionándola con la historia de la formación técnico-profesional en citopatología, analizando las conexiones entre tales secuencias de eventos. Desde una perspectiva histórica, la formación profesional en anatomía patológica se basó principalmente en la formación en servicio, pero el campo de la formación técnica en citopatología difiere de este modelo. Se han hecho varios esfuerzos para estructurar los planes de estudio en el área y reducir las discrepancias en esta formación. Sin embargo, las disputas entre intereses políticos y económicos, que marcan la división técnica del trabajo en el país, sumadas a los enfrentamientos empresariales en el trabajo de citopatología, y la discrepancia entre las acciones de educación y de rastreo impidieron la materialización efectiva de estos esfuerzos. La demanda por la incorporación de nuevas tecnologías acentúa aún más la fragilidad en la formación de la categoría. Solo con acciones gubernamentales concretas de capacitación y regulación profesional será posible transformar este escenario, favoreciendo el desarrollo y la expansión de las campañas de detección temprana del cáncer en Brasil.

O linfoma é uma neoplasia de alta recorrência na rotina oncológica de medicina veterinária. Pode ser classificado em linfoma Hodgking-liked, com raros casos descritos somente em felinos,e não Hodgking, sendo este segundo o mais comum, subdividido em linfomas B ou T. O objetivo deste trabalho foi relatar a conduta clínica, diagnóstica e terapêutica do caso de uma cadela, de 12 anos, sem raça definida, que manifestava disúria, prostração, dor abdominal e ao exame físico a presença de uma massa na região hipogástrica. Esta foi diagnosticada com linfoma de grandes células por meio de exames de citologia e biópsia, com solicitação do exame de imunoistoquímica que confirmou linfoma difuso de grandes células de imunofenótipo B. Sem o envolvimento de nenhum outro sistema, classificou-se como linfoma primário de bexiga extranodal. O animal passou pelo tratamento quimioterápico realizando nove sessões de quimioterapia pelo protocolo de CHOP, contudo devido ao agravamento do caso a paciente veio a óbito cerca de sete meses após o diagnóstico da doença. O caso estudado foi de extrema importância para a compreensão de linfomas primários de bexiga em razão da escassez de informações relacionadas na literatura. Ainda, o cão é um excelente modelo experimental de linfomas não Hodgking em humanos, consequentemente compreender essa doença em cães promove a evolução conjunta da medicina humana.
Lymphoma is a highly recurrent rate neoplasm in the oncology routine of veterinary medicine. It can be classified into Hodgking-like, rarely described just in felines, and non-Hodgking lymphoma, the latter being the most commun, subdivided into B-cell lymphoma and T-cell lymphoma. The objective of this study was to report the clinical and therapeutic conduct within the diagnosis procedures of a 12-years-old female dog, mixed breed, who manifested dysuria, prostation, abdominal pain and on the physical examination a mass in the hypogastric region was noticed. This was diagnosed as a large cell lymphoma by means cytology and biopsy, also immunohistochemistry was required which confirmed the diffuse large cell lymphoma of immunophenotyping B. Without any other sistem envolved, the neoplasm was classified as primary urinary bladder lymphoma extranodal. The animal underwent chemotherapy, performing nine sessions according to the Madison protocol, however, due to the worsening of the case, the patient died about seven months after the diagnosis of the disease. This case was extremely importante for the understanding of primary urinary bladder lymphomas due to the scarcity of informations in the literature. Also, dog is an excellent experi,emtal model of non Hodgking lymphomas in humans, thus understandig this disease in dogs promotes the joint evolution of human medicine.

One of the biggest dilemmas facing a cytopathology slide is the differential diagnosis of follicular thyroid lesions, grouped as follicular pattern lesions, which include goiter, follicular adenoma and follicular carcinoma, follicular variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma and non-invasive follicular thyroid neoplasm with papillary like nuclear features. Such lesions share many characteristics, which makes the proper identification of malignant follicular lesions a challenge. The cytology obtained through fine needle aspiration puncture is the most effective standard method for diagnosis of thyroid nodules, but its diagnostic efficacy clearly decreases in lesions of thyroid follicular pattern. Thus, a series of auxiliary tools for diagnoses, such as morphometry and nuclear texture analysis, have been increasingly used in the pathologist's practice, as an objective and reproducible tool. These are techniques, which depend on the incorporation of software to digital image analysis and can add accuracy to classical morphological analysis and immunohistochemistry in the evaluation of follicular pattern lesions. In addition to immunocytochemistry and molecular techniques, morphometry allows the estimation of parameters identified in individual cells and represents a tool that, based on quantitative parameters, translates reliable parameters for objective classification of the malignancy. This study aims to review the nuclear characteristics and their role in the diagnosis of follicular thyroid lesions.
Um dos maiores dilemas diante de uma lâmina de citopatologia é o diagnóstico diferencial de lesões foliculares da tiroide agrupadas como lesões de padrão folicular e que incluem; bócio, adenoma e carcinoma foliculares, carcinoma papilífero variante folicular e a neoplasia folicular não invasiva com características nucleares papilares (Uno de los mayores dilemas que presenta una muestra de citopatología es el diagnóstico diferencial de las lesiones foliculares tiroideas reunidas como lesiones de patrón folicular, que incluyen: bocio, adenoma folicular, carcinoma folicular, variante folicular del carcinoma papilar y la neoplasia folicular no invasiva con características nucleares de tipo papilar). Tais lesões compartilham muitas características, o que faz com que a identificação adequada de lesões foliculares malignas represente um desafio. The occurrence of cases that are resistant to long-term treatment, especially in the nasal planum of cats, emphasizes the importance of studying its pathogenesis. The purpose of this study was to analyze and compare the inflammatory process of cutaneous lesions of feline refractory sporotrichosis to clinical aspects through cytopathological and histopathological examination. Moreover, the study included 13 cats with cutaneous lesions that had been resistant to itraconazole treatment for more than a year. Cutaneous lesions samples were collected for cytopathological, histopathological, and fungal culture analyses. Tissue fragments were processed and stained with hematoxylin-eosin (HE) and Grocott methenamine silver (GMS). Further, two clinical presentations had the highest occurrence: the localized cutaneous form in animals with good general condition and stable disease (n=9, 69.2%) and the disseminated cutaneous form in cats with poor general condition (n=4, 30.8%). In cats with refractory sporotrichosis, the nasal planum (84.6%) was the most common location of lesions. In the cytopathological study, cats with fewer than two lesions and in good general condition (n=9, 69.2%) showed absence or mild yeast intensity (up to 5 yeasts per field), lower intensity of macrophages and neutrophils, and higher intensity of epithelioid cells, lymphocytes, plasma cells, and eosinophils. On the other hand, (n=4, 30.8%) of the cats with disseminated sporotrichosis and a poor general condition had a marked intensity of yeasts, which were mostly phagocytosed by an increased number of macrophages and neutrophils. Of those animals with good general condition, the majority (n=6, 66.7%) had higher eosinophil intensity. In histopathology, malformed suppurative granuloma was the predominant type (n=9, 69.2%) in feline sporotrichosis lesions, followed by well-formed granulomas (n=4, 30.8%). Malformed granulomas showed mild to moderate fungal intensity (55.6%) in animals with good general condition and localized lesions while marked fungal intensity (44.4%) in cats with the disseminated form of the disease and poor general condition. Well-formed granulomas (n=4, 30.7%) had mild to moderate intensity of fungal load, and 75% of the animals with this type of granuloma had only one lesion and were in good general condition. Long-term itraconazole treatment in these cats with refractory sporotrichosis can keep the infection under control and localized lesions stable; however, fungus reactivation can occur, resulting in an exuberant and inefficient immune response.

Disseminated histoplasmosis is a major cause of mortality in HIV-infected patients. Rapid and efficient diagnosis of Histoplasma capsulatum is crucial. Cytopathology is available in most hospitals and represents a rapid diagnostic alternative. In this study, we reviewed 12 years of experience to describe the cytology of histoplasmosis diagnosed by bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) in relation to patient characteristics. BAL-diagnosed pulmonary histoplasmosis concerned 17 patients (14 HIV+). BAL cellularity ranged from 76,000 to 125,000 cells/mL in HIV patients, and 117,000 to 160,000 cells/mL in non-HIV patients. Macrophages predominated in all HIV patients (from 60% to 88%), lymphocytic infiltrates ranged from 5% to 15%, and neutrophils were very heterogeneous (from 2% to 32%). The number of H. capsulatum at hot spots seemed greater in HIV-infected than in immunocompetent patients (9 to 375 vs. 4 to 10) and were inversely proportional to the CD4 counts. Yeasts were both intracellular and extracellular in 85.7% of the HIV patients. This is the most comprehensive series detailing the cytological aspects of BAL in the diagnosis of H. capsulatum, focusing on the number of yeasts and their clustering pattern. The cytological examination of the Gomori-Grocott-stained BAL allows a reliable diagnosis of histoplasmosis.

For the first time, an isolate of the dichorhavirus orchid fleck virus (OFV, family Rhabdoviridae) was found infecting an orchid plant in Mexico. The infected sample of Epidendrum veroscriptum was collected in a nursery in Lagunillas, municipality of Zihuateutla, Edo. Puebla. Mites gathered on this plant were analyzed by light and scanning electron microscopy, which consistently indicated the presence of adults of the species Brevipalpus californicus, the common vector of OFV. Viral identification was based on symptoms, cytopathology, and reverse transcriptase-PCR/sequencing of genome fragments of the RNA1 and 2 molecules. Since isolates of OFV causing citrus leprosis have been previously detected in the Mexican states of Chiapas, Querétaro, and Jalisco, we promote a pertinent discussion and thought-provoking questions regarding the epidemiology and putative evolution of OFV.

Background: Among the bacterial dermopathy the canine leproid granuloma (CLG) is a nodular pyogranulomatous disorder that affects the skin or subcutaneous tissue mainly in the dorsal face of ear pinna, head, and extremity of memberscaused by Mycobacterium spp. The pathogenicity is still not well clarified regarding the causative agent, which has notyet been completely typified, but phylogenetically, it is related to Mycobacterium tilburgii, M. simiae, and M. genavense,in Brazil, by the species M. murphy. The objective of this study is to report a case of canine leproid granuloma, throughcytology and histopathology, and present the therapeutic procedures until the regression of cutaneous lesion.Case: A 5-year-old Boxer breed, intac male weighing 32 kg, was assisted at the Veterinary Clinic of UNIFIMES, in MineirosCity, Mid-West Region of Brazil, GO, Brazil. The animal had 4 nodules in the ears with evolution of 30 days, with nopruritus and without previous treatment. During the physical exam, the animal had normal physiological parameters. Thecutaneous lesions were characterised by papules and alopecic nodules of firm to fibroelastic consistency, with progressiveincrease, located in the convex face of the ears. The fine needle aspiration puncture technique (FNAP) and histopathologyfor a definitive diagnosis was used, allowing the differentiation between inflammatory processes, infectious and neoplastic. Furthermore, blood was collected for hemogram and biochemical analysis for the assessment of renal and hepaticfunctions. In cytology, the stained blades by the Diff-quick stain in the microscopic exam had elevated cellularity, withseveral macrophages, and bacilliform structures in the negative image.
