ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Recent advancements in cervical interlaminar epidural steroid injections have given rise to the modified paramedian interlaminar (mPIL) approach. The objective of this study was to perform an analysis of the contrast spread pattern within the cervical epidural space, taking into account different needle tip positions in the mPIL approach. METHODS: A total of 48 patients were included in the study and randomly assigned to either the medial or lateral group based on the needle tip's position in the anterior-posterior view. The primary outcome measured was the contrast flow under fluoroscopic visualization. As a secondary outcome, we analyzed the location of the needle tip position in both lateral and contralateral oblique views. Clinical effectiveness was assessed by measuring pain intensity and functional disability post-procedure. RESULTS: Significant disparities were noted in the ventral distribution of contrast between the medial and lateral groups. In the lateral images, needle tips in the lateral group were positioned more ventrally compared to those in the medial group. Both groups exhibited statistically significant improvements in neck and radicular pain, as well as functional status, 4 weeks after treatment, with no significant differences between them. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that the ventral dispersion of contrast material during cervical interlaminar epidural steroid injections using the mPIL approach may vary depending on the needle tip location.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The aim of this research was to analyse the current literature on displaced dental implants in the mandibular body, including local and systemic variables related to their cause, and to identify the most frequent location. METHODS: The study conducted a search of three databases (Pubmed, Scopus, and Web of Science) using specific index terms such as 'dental implant', 'displacement', 'dislocation', 'displaced', and 'mandible'. The analysis focused on the direction of displacement and the characteristics of the bone tissue (bone quality, density, and quantity) in cases where dental implants were displaced. RESULTS: A total of 371 articles were obtained. Thirteen of these articles were selected and read in full. To define bone quality, the Lekholm and Zarb classification, modified by Rosas et al., was used. The type II-B bone, which is characterized by thick cortical bone surrounding cancellous bone with extremely wide medullary spaces, presented the largest number of complications. Twenty-two cases were found in which the displacement direction was horizontal. Of these, four were displaced vestibularly, fourteen lingually, and four remained in the center. Additionally, 24 cases presented vertical displacement, with 12 displaced towards the inferior border of the mandible, 9 towards the middle or adjacent to the inferior dental nerve canal, and 3 above the inferior dental nerve canal. CONCLUSION: The accidental displacement of implants within the mandibular body is associated with various risk factors, including the characteristics of the bony trabeculum and the size of the medullary spaces. It is reasonable to suggest that only an adequate pre-surgical diagnostic evaluation, with the help of high-resolution tomographic images that allow a previous evaluation of these structures, will help to have better control over the other factors, thus minimizing the risk of displacement.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Hip migration percentage (MP) measured on anteroposterior pelvis radiographs is the gold standard to assess the severity of hip displacement in children with cerebral palsy (CP). Repeated exposure of these children to ionizing radiation under a hip surveillance program is undesirable. Recently, a semi-automatic approach to measure MPUS on ultrasound (US) images was validated in a phantom study. This pilot in vivo study applied the previous phantom method and aimed to determine the reliability and accuracy of the MPUS. METHODS: Thirty-four children (23 boys and 11 girls) aged 8.9 ± 3.1 y old and diagnosed with CP were recruited. A total of 59 hips were scanned once, while 43 of these were scanned twice to evaluate the test-retest reliability. Two raters (R1 and R2) manually measured MPUS; procedures included selecting images of interest, cropping a region of interest and removing soft tissues on hip US images. Custom software was developed to measure MP automatically after the manual pre-image processing. RESULTS: The intra-class correlation coefficients (ICC2,1) for the test-retest (R1), intra-rater (R1) and inter-rater (R1 vs R2) reliabilities were 0.90, 0.94 and 0.82, respectively. The standard error of measurement of MPUS for all three evaluations was ≤3.0%. The mean absolute difference between MPUS and MPX-ray and the percentage of MPUS within clinical acceptance error of 10% for R1 and R2 were (R1: 6.2% ± 4.9%, 84.7%) and (R2: 7.6% ± 6.1%, 73.7%), respectively. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated that US scans were repeatable and MPUS could be measured reliably and accurately.

OBJECTIVE: Anterior disc displacement (ADD) has been used to establish temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) models. Based on whether preserve of the retrodiscal attachment, the modelling methodologies include ADD with dissecting the retrodiscal attachment (ADDwd) and ADD without dissecting the retrodiscal attachment (ADDwod). This article aims to determine which model better matches the micromechanical and microstructural progression of TMD. METHODS: Through meticulous microscopic observations, the microstructure and micromechanical deformation of the TMJ discs in ADDwd and ADDwod rabbit models were compared at 2 and 20 weeks. RESULT: Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy showed that collagen fibres became slenderized and straightened, collagen fibrils lost diameter and arrangement in the ADDwd group at 2 weeks. Meanwhile, nanoindentation and atomic electron microscopy showed that the micro- and nano- mechanical properties decreased dramatically. However, the ADDwod group exhibited no significant microstructure and micromechanical deformations at 2 weeks. Dissection of the retrodiscal attachment contribute in the acceleration of disease progression at the early stage, the devastating discal phenotype remained fundamentally the same within the two models at 20 weeks. CONCLUSION: ADDwod models, induced stable and persistent disc deformation, therefore, can better match the progression of TMD. While ADDwd models can be considered for experiments which aim to obtain advanced phenotype in a short time.

ABSTRACT

AIM: To review and summarize the mechanism hypothesis, influencing factors and possible consequences of macular retinal displacement after idiopathic macular hole (IMH) surgery. METHODS: PubMed and Web of Science database was searched for studies published before April 2023 on "Retinal displacement", "Idiopathic macular holes", and "Macular displacement". RESULTS: Recently, more academics have begun to focus on retinal displacement following idiopathic macular holes. They found that internal limiting membrane (ILM) peeling was the main cause of inducing postoperative position shift in the macular region. Moreover, several studies have revealed that the macular hole itself, as well as ILM peeling method, will have an impact on the result. In addition, this phenomenon is related to postoperative changes in macular retinal thickness, cone outer segment tips line recovery, the occurrence of dissociated optic nerve fiber layer (DONFL) and the degree of metamorphopsia. CONCLUSION: As a subclinical phenomenon, the clinical significance of postoperative macular displacement cannot be underestimated as it may affect the recovery of anatomy and function.

ABSTRACT

The Advancing Climate Justice in Climate Adaptation Strategies for New York City (Equity) chapter of NPCC4 builds on the findings and recommendations from NPCC3 to identify additional metrics and adaptation efforts that can advance climate justice. First, the chapter assesses the efforts of the City to incorporate equity into climate adaptation efforts since NPCC3 and describes how the communities profiled in NPCC3 have implemented and evolved their approaches to addressing the intersecting climate, environmental, and social stressors that they continue to face. Second, it adds to the historical context of climate inequity by linking the bioregion's history of colonization, land dispossession, and slavery building on emerging evidence demonstrating how historical and contemporary land use patterns and decisions shape present and future climate risks and social vulnerability, including climate displacement. Third, it recommends a NYC-focused metric to identify areas of the city that are most vulnerable to the intersection of climate hazards, social vulnerability, and displacement. Finally, it highlights approaches to more equitable and just climate adaptation drawn from local, national, and international examples. As such, the chapter offers best practices that prioritize community-driven climate resilience approaches that are integrated, more equitable, and racially just.

Simultaneous detection of multiple targets is of great significance for accurate disease diagnosis. Herein, based on duplex-specific nuclease (DSN) assisted signal amplification and the toehold-mediated strand displacement reaction (TSDR), we constructed an electrochemical biosensor with high sensitivity and high specificity for dual-target detection. MiRNA-141 and miRNA-133a were used as the targets, and ferrocene (Fc) and methylene blue (MB) with significant peak potential differentiation were used as the electrochemical signal probes. The elaborately designed hairpin probe H1, which was fixed on the electrode surface, could be hybridized with the target miRNA-141 to perform signal amplification by the DSN-assisted enzyme cleavage cycle; thus, miRNA-141 could be detected by Fc signal changes at 0.41 V. The hairpin H1 can also combine with the MB-labeled signal probe (SP) output from miRNA-133a-induced TSDR, and the detection of miRNA-133a can be realized according to the response signal generated by MB at -0.26 V. The two sensing lines are independent of each other, and there is no mutual interference in the detection process. Therefore, two independent detection lines could be connected in series, and the simultaneous detection of two targets can be achieved on a single electrode. This novel detection strategy provides a new way to simultaneously detect different biomarkers.

The integration of trauma-informed and ethical frameworks in qualitative research concerning survivors of gender-based violence (GBV) within displaced communities is critical. These individuals often bear the weight of traumatic experiences compounded by displacement and associated hardships. Adopting a trauma-informed approach establishes a safe environment, prioritizing survivors' well-being and respecting their agency and narratives, thereby fostering trust and reducing re-traumatization risks. Ethical considerations ensure the dignity, rights, and cultural sensitivities of participants are upheld, contributing to rigorous and humane research. This integration amplifies survivors' voices and experiences, enhancing understanding and empathy. Trauma-informed approaches acknowledge the likelihood of trauma in individuals' lives and prioritize safety without aiming to treat symptoms. Proficient interviewing skills aim to improve comfort, safety, and recall without avoiding challenging questions. Integration of trauma-informed principles across all interview phases is crucial, particularly for individuals experiencing various traumas simultaneously, such as displacement, violence, and ongoing conflict. Drawing from the authors' experiences and existing literature, this paper advocates for a compassionate and empowering shift in qualitative research methodologies to better engage with survivors of trauma and GBV within displaced communities.

This case report describes a patient with a large type IV hiatal hernia (HH), notable for exhibiting minimal symptoms, unlike typical cases of similar severity. The patient experienced only mild discomfort despite significant anatomical displacement, without severe symptoms often seen with such hernias. Diagnostic tests confirmed the herniated stomach, but the lack of severe symptoms like dysphagia defies usual expectations. This case highlights the variability in symptoms and clinical presentations of HH, stressing the need for tailored assessment and management for each patient.

ABSTRACT

Examination of livelihood assets is crucial for displaced people as it informs effective resource allocation and support. This study investigates the livelihood decisions of households displaced by Nepal's Tanahu Hydropower Project using multinomial logistic regression to evaluate how different assets affect their choices. Data were obtained using questionnaires, with a total of 185 questionnaires used for the analysis in this study. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used for data analysis. This study finds that physical assets substantially influence livelihood strategies, promoting diversification and nonfarming activities. Interestingly, social assets have a negative impact, whereas natural, financial, and human assets exert no significant effect. The study highlights the community's focus on economic stability, balancing immediate financial needs with long-term goals such as children's education. However, it reveals ongoing financial struggles, with an average daily income of only 1.962 USD and many households remaining in poverty, particularly those dependent on farming. The study also reflects on the mixed perceptions toward government policies, influenced by factors such as skill gaps and family aspirations. These findings provide essential insights for targeted support and resource allocation to displaced populations.

Objectives To assess the benefits of Zhuang medicine in treating rheumatoid arthritis (RA), with a focus on cardiac tricuspid annulus displacement and heart rate variability (HRV), thereby providing evidence supporting Zhuang medicine theories. METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed echocardiographic data and HRV of 30 healthy subjects and 60 RA patients. RA patients were divided into two groups for a 6-month treatment: 30 received iguratimod (control group), and 30 underwent combined Zhuang medicine and needle-pricking therapy (test group). Echocardiographic assessments and HRV measures were recorded both before and after treatment. RESULTS: Compared to the healthy group, RA patients showed increased late diastolic tricuspid annular velocity. However, early diastolic tricuspid annular velocity to late diastolic tricuspid annular velocity ratios, tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE), and the standard deviation of average normal RR intervals (SDANN) were significantly lower (all P<0.05). After treatment, the test group exhibited higher clinical efficacy (90% vs. 56.67% in the control group). Significant improvements were observed in TAPSE and HRV indices [SDANN, standard deviation of the RR intervals (SDNN), root mean square of successive RR interval differences (RMSSD), and the percentage of adjacent RR interval differences greater than 50 milliseconds (PNN50)] in the test group (all P<0.05). Additionally, a positive correlation was noted among these measurments. CONCLUSION: Zhuang medicine significantly enhances right ventricular function and autonomic balance in RA patients, thus affirming its therapeutic potential.

As the primary variable load of bridges, vehicle load is an important parameter for bridge health monitoring. However, traditional Weigh-in-Motion (WIM) systems and the commonly used method of placing sensors on the bridge are challenging to apply in load monitoring for many small and medium-sized bridges. Therefore, this paper proposes a bridge vehicle load identification method based on traffic surveillance video data. Leveraging the surveillance video data on the bridge, without introducing additional hardware devices, the displacement of target points is detected through sub-pixel level image detection algorithms, enabling non-contact measurement of bridge structural response through imaging. A spatiotemporal relationship model of structural displacement, vehicle load, and load distribution is established to solve for vehicle load. Finally, model bridge tests under various loading conditions and engineering practice experiments are conducted to validate the feasibility of the method. The results of the model bridge tests show that the structural displacement measured using traffic video measurement has a deviation of less than 10% compared to the measurements obtained using contact displacement sensors (LVDT), and it can accurately reflect the displacement characteristics of the structure. The results of the field tests demonstrate that the average estimation deviation for heavy vehicle loads ranging from 12 to 18 tons is approximately 18%, meeting the engineering requirements. The proposed method can provide load statistical information for the extensive health monitoring of small and medium-sized bridges and offer a new technical pathway for obtaining bridge load information.

BACKGROUND: Tiredness, poor concentration, disturbed sleep and poor appetite can all be caused by depression, which is a common mental disorder and a leading cause of disability worldwide. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of major depressive disorder, suicidal ideation, and risk factors in Sudanese children and adolescents during the Sudanese army conflict. METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional community-based study was carried out among Sudanese children between 11 and 17 years old who living in Sudan at the start of the conflict by using a self-administered questionnaire under the guidance of parents, if necessary. The questionnaire was adapted from the Patients Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) checklist for the assessment of major depression disorder symptoms according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual Edition 5th Edition (DSM-5). The questionnaire was translated into Arabic by two expert translators, and its validity and reliability were confirmed. Data analysis was performed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 25 software, and descriptive analysis and any appropriate statistical tests were performed. RESULTS: Among the 963 participants, the mean age was 15.18 ± 2.1 years, 65.5% were female, and 67.7% had major depressive disorder. There was a significant relationship between MDD score, age, sex, current residency status, and traumatic event exposure, with P values less than 0.001 for all variables. CONCLUSION: Major depressive disorder was highly prevalent among Sudanese children and adolescents included in the present study. Additionally, suicidal ideation, which requires immediate intervention, was reported to be very high. The findings will help the government to provide proper mental health interventions for affected people.

ABSTRACT

The patient was a 13-year-old male who fell while riding a bicycle and was initially diagnosed with a distal radial epiphyseal separation (volar displacement type) that was conservatively managed. Four months post-injury, he complained of limited movement in his left index finger and was referred to our hospital. Upon examination, the patient also complained of limited movement of the left index finger in wrist flexion. The wrist range of motion was 50° of volar flexion, 50° of dorsiflexion, 90° of pronation, and 90° of supination with the fingers extended. The X-ray revealed a radiolucent area in the distal radius. Ultrasound, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging scans demonstrated entrapment of the extensor tendon within the medullary cavity of the radius. Five months post-injury, surgery was performed using the wide-awake local anesthesia no-tourniquet (WALANT) technique. A dorsal wrist approach was utilized, and the extensor digitorum communis tendon was found to be trapped within the medullary cavity of the radius. The tendon was released using an air drill, and sufficient improvement in the left index finger flexion was confirmed with active movement before concluding the surgery. At the 11-month postoperative follow-up, the patient showed excellent outcomes with a wrist range of motion of 75° of volar flexion, 85° of dorsiflexion, 90° of pronation, and 90° of supination. Tendon entrapment of the extensor tendons has been reported as a long-standing complication associated with distal radius fractures, particularly with volar displacement types. A benefit of the WALANT technique is the ability to communicate with the patient during surgery, allowing for active movements of the fingers and wrist. This is particularly useful in tendon surgeries for determining tendon tension. We report a case of successful tenolysis surgery using the WALANT technique for a patient with a conservatively managed distal radial epiphyseal separation (volar displacement type), who experienced a limited flexion of the index finger due to tendon entrapment.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are crucial regulators in various pathological and physiological processes, and their misregulation is a hallmark of many diseases. In this study, we introduce an advanced DNA nanomachine using split-type molecular beacons (STMBs) for sensitive detection of miR-21, a key biomarker in cancer diagnostics. Utilizing an innovative STMB-mediated cascade strand displacement amplification (STMB-CSDA) technique, our approach offers a powerful means for the precise quantification of miRNAs, using miR-21 as a primary example. The system operates through target-induced linkage of STMBs, initiating a series of strand displacement amplifications resulting in exponential signal amplification. Coupled with the precision of T4 DNA ligase, this mechanism translates minimal miRNA presence into significant fluorescence signals, offering detection sensitivity as low as 5.96 pM and a dynamic range spanning five orders of magnitude. Characterized by its high specificity, which includes the ability to identify single-base mismatches, along with its user-friendly design, our method represents a significant leap forward in miRNA analysis and molecular diagnostics. Its successful application in examining total RNA from cancer cells and clinical serum samples demonstrates its immense potential as a groundbreaking tool for early cancer detection and gene expression studies, paving the way for the next generation of non-invasive diagnostics in personalized healthcare.

ABSTRACT

Temperature-dependent plastic deformation behaviors of single crystals of quaternary and ternary equiatomic medium-entropy alloys (MEAs) belonging to the Cr-Mn-Fe-Co-Ni system were investigated in compression at temperatures in the range 9 K to 1373 K. Their critical resolved shear stresses (CRSSs) increase with decreasing temperature below room temperature. There is also a dulling of the temperature dependence of CRSS below 77 K due to dislocation inertial effects that we attribute to a decrease in the phonon drag coefficient. These behaviors were compared with those of previously investigated single crystals of the equiatomic Cr-Co-Ni and Cr-Fe-Co-Ni MEAs, and the equiatomic Cr-Mn-Fe-Co-Ni high-entropy alloy (HEA). The temperature dependence of CRSS and the apparent activation volumes below room temperature can be well described by conventional thermal activation theories of face-centered cubic (FCC) alloys. Above 673 K, there is a small increase in CRSS, which we believe is due to elastic interactions between solutes and mobile dislocations, the so-called Portevin-Le Chatelier (PL) effect. The CRSS at 0 K was obtained by extrapolation of fitted CRSS vs. temperature curves and compared with predictions from solid solution strengthening models of HEA and MEAs.


The novelty of our work entitled 'Analysis of the temperature-dependent plastic deformation of single crystals of quinary, quaternary and ternary equiatomic high- and medium-entropy alloys of the Cr-Mn-Fe-Co-Ni system' can be summarized as follows: The temperature dependences of CRSS were experimentally deduced from bulk single crystals of the six MEAs for the first time, so that fair comparison among the FCC HEA/MEAs is made.

BACKGROUND: Monitoring the progression of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) using CT primarily focuses on assessing the extent of fibrotic lesions, without considering the distortion of lung architecture. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate three-dimensional average displacement (3D-AD) quantification of lung structures using deformable registration of serial CT images as a parameter of local lung architectural distortion and predictor of IPF prognosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with IPF evaluated between January 2016 and March 2017 who had undergone CT at least twice were retrospectively included (n = 114). The 3D-AD was obtained by deformable registration of baseline and follow-up CT images. A computer-aided quantification software measured the fibrotic lesion volume. Cox regression analysis evaluated these variables to predict mortality. RESULTS: The 3D-AD and the fibrotic lesion volume change were significantly larger in the subpleural lung region (5.2 mm (interquartile range (IQR): 3.6-7.1 mm) and 0.70% (IQR: 0.22-1.60%), respectively) than those in the inner region (4.7 mm (IQR: 3.0-6.4 mm) and 0.21% (IQR: 0.004-1.12%), respectively). Multivariable logistic analysis revealed that subpleural region 3D-AD and fibrotic lesion volume change were independent predictors of mortality (hazard ratio: 1.12 and 1.23; 95% confidence interval: 1.02-1.22 and 1.10-1.38; p = 0.01 and p < 0.001, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: The 3D-AD quantification derived from deformable registration of serial CT images serves as a marker of lung architectural distortion and a prognostic predictor in patients with IPF.

ABSTRACT

Focused ultrasound (FUS) stimulation is a promising neuromodulation technique with the merits of non-invasiveness, high spatial resolution, and deep penetration depth. However, simultaneous imaging of FUS-induced brain tissue displacement and the subsequent effect of FUS stimulation on brain hemodynamics has proven challenging thus far. In addition, earlier studies lack in situ confirmation of targeting except for the magnetic resonance imaging-guided FUS system-based studies. The purpose of this study is 1) to introduce a fully ultrasonic approach to in situ target, modulate neuronal activity, and monitor the resultant neuromodulation effect by respectively leveraging displacement imaging, FUS, and functional ultrasound (fUS) imaging, and 2) to investigate FUS-evoked cerebral blood volume (CBV) response and the relationship between CBV and displacement. We performed displacement imaging on craniotomized mice to confirm the in situ targeting for neuromodulation site. We recorded hemodynamic responses evoked by FUS while fUS imaging revealed an ipsilateral CBV increase that peaks at 4 s post-FUS. We report a stronger hemodynamic activation in the subcortical region than cortical, showing good agreement with a brain elasticity map that can also be obtained using a similar methodology. We observed dose-dependent CBV responses with peak CBV, activated area, and correlation coefficient increasing with the ultrasonic dose. Furthermore, by mapping displacement and hemodynamic activation, we found that displacement colocalized and linearly correlated with CBV increase. The findings presented herein demonstrated that FUS evokes ipsilateral hemodynamic activation in cortical and subcortical depths while the evoked hemodynamic responses colocalize and correlate with FUS-induced displacement. We anticipate that our findings will help consolidate accurate targeting as well as shedding light on one of the mechanisms behind FUS modulation, i.e., how FUS mechanically displaces brain tissue affecting cerebral hemodynamics and thereby its associated connectivity.

Study Design: Retrospective cohort study. Purpose: This study aimed to compare data from patients who received intradiscal condoliase (chondroitin sulfate ABC endolyase) injection for primary lumbar disc herniation (LDH) and recurrent LDH. Overview of Literature: Chemonucleolysis with condoliase for LDH is a treatment with relatively good results and a high safety profile; however, few studies have reported recurrence after LDH surgery. Methods: The study participants were 249 patients who underwent intradiscal condoliase injection for LDH at nine participating institutions, including 241 patients with initial LDH (group C) and eight with recurrent LDH (group R). Patient characteristics including age, sex, body mass index, disease duration, intervertebral LDH level, smoking history, and diabetes history were evaluated. Low back pain/leg pain Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) scores and the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) were used to evaluate clinical symptoms before treatment and at 6 months and 1 year after treatment. Results: Low back pain NRS scores (before treatment and at 6 months and 1 year after treatment, respectively) in group C (4.9 → 2.6 → 1.8) showed significant improvement until 1 year after treatment. Although a tendency for improvement was observed in group R (3.5 → 2.8 → 2.2), no significant difference was noted. Groups C (6.6 → 2.4 → 1.4) and R (7.0 → 3.1 → 3.2) showed significant improvement in the leg pain NRS scores after treatment. Group C (41.4 → 19.5 → 13.7) demonstrated significant improvement in the ODI up to 1 year after treatment; however, no significant difference was found in group R (35.7 → 31.7 → 26.4). Conclusions: Although intradiscal condoliase injection is less effective for LDH recurrence than for initial cases, it is useful for improving leg pain and can be considered a minimally invasive and safe treatment method.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: to compare the combined effect of Prolotherapy and Deep Dry Needling (DDN) versus DDN effect on relieving the symptoms of Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) anterior disc displacement. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The clinical trial randomly allocated forty patients. The (control group) patients received four intraarticular and masseteric DDN sessions, while the (study group) patients were subjected to the exact technique followed by Prolosolution injection. The baseline preoperative measurements included Maximal interincisal opening (MIO), auscultation of the presence of clicking, and Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), which were repeated for postoperative measurements after one, two, five, and eight months. RESULTS: By the end of the study, all patients expressed apparent improvement in pain MIO and clicking. The inter- and intragroup comparison revealed that the pain score values of the control group after five and eight months were significantly higher than those of the study group. The study group demonstrated more significant MIO calibration than the control group, with insignificant differences between both groups regarding the presence of clicking at any time interval. The associations between clicking and VAS values, between clicking and MIO, and between VAS values and increased MIO were positive in the test group and negative in the control group. CONCLUSIONS: Dextrose Prolotherapy and DDN were beneficial. However, Prolotherapy demonstrated more significant, sustained, and correlated long-term alleviation of symptoms and increased MIO. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The study assesses the sole effect of dextrose prolotherapy on relieving the signs of TMJ anterior disc displacement apart from the impact of the penetrating needle.
