ABSTRACT

This study aimed to determine the fertility and growth traits, viability, and body measurements of the Romanov sheep under breeder conditions in the humid region of Turkey. The animal material of the research consisted of sheep imported from Ukraine in 2019. In the study, there are two farms with 31 and 44 ewes in the first year and three farms with 45, 34, and 32 ewes in the second year. The reproductive performances of 186 sheep and lambs in three different farms were examined, and nine rams, one ram per 20 sheep, were used for mating. Two-year (2020 and 2021) data on the reproductive performance of pure Romanov ewes, survivability in ewes and lambs, and development characteristics in lambs were used in the present study. The conceived rate (88.17%), fecundity at birth (1.42) and at weaning (1.29), litter size at birth (1.76) and weaning (1.56), single (50.98%), twin (41.83%), and triplet birth rate (6.54%), and abortion rate (6.71%) were determined for 2 years average. Birth and weaning weights of lambs were affected by sex and birth type (p < 0.01). The Romanov sheep and their lambs did not satisfy the breeder regarding reproductive performance and lamb development.

ABSTRACT

The present study investigated factors associated with the incidence of stillbirth in young hyper-prolific sows within free farrowing systems in tropical environments. A total of 714 live-born and 54 stillborn piglets from 57 Landrace × Yorkshire sows, with an average parity of 2.7 ± 1.0 (range: 1 - 4), were comprehensively investigated. Reproductive variables of the sows, including gestation length, farrowing duration, the total number of piglets born per litter, and the birth order and status of each piglet, were recorded. Differences in the physiological characteristics of live-born and stillborn piglets, such as birth interval, cumulative birth interval, body weight at birth, crown-rump length, body mass index (BMI), ponderal index (PI), meconium staining score, and the percentage of piglets with a broken umbilical cord, were analysed. Piglets were divided into four groups based on the quartiles of birth order (Q1-Q4). On average, the duration of farrowing was 173.3 ± 85.9 min, and the total number of piglets born and number of piglets born alive-per litter were 14.1 ± 3.8 and 12.5 ± 3.5, respectively. The incidence of stillbirth was 6.7% (54/801 piglets). The higher percentages of stillbirths were detected in sows with large litter sizes (≥17 piglets, 10.9%) compared to those with small (≤13 piglets, 6.1%) and moderate (14 - 16 piglets, 2.8%) litter sizes (p < .001). The incidences of stillbirth in Q3 and Q4 of the litters were higher than in Q1 and Q2 (p < .001). Compared to live-born piglets, stillborn piglets had higher cumulative birth interval (103.0 ± 3.71 vs. 142.4 ± 9.35 min, p < .001), BMI (17.1 ± 0.15 vs. 18.4 ± 0.39 kg/m2, p = .002), PI (63.7 ± 0.59 vs. 70.8 ± 1.59 kg/m3, p < .001), meconium staining scores (1.78 ± 0.04 vs. 2.04 ± 0.10, p = .021), and the percentage of piglets born with a ruptured umbilical cord (45.2% vs. 66.0%, p = .004). An increase in the incidence of stillbirth was detected at 60, 120, 150, 180, and ≥ 210 min after the first piglet was born, compared to those born within the first 30 min of farrowing (p < .05). In conclusion, the study found that stillbirths in young, hyper-prolific sows were linked to several factors: large litter sizes (≥17 piglets per litter), prolonged cumulative birth intervals (142.4 min), elevated BMI of 18.4 kg/m2, high PI values of 70.8 kg/m3, increased meconium staining scores, and a higher occurrence of ruptured umbilical cords. To reduce the risk of stillbirth, particularly among piglets with high body indices born later in the birthing process, it is recommended to enhance farrowing supervision for young sows, starting at a cumulative birth interval of 60 min.

ABSTRACT

Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) is a hormone produced by growing preantral and antral follicles of the ovary. AMH is accepted as an important biomarker for fertility and superovulation parameters in livestock species. This study aimed to evaluate changes in serum AMH level in the oestrous cycle, repeatability of AMH, the effect of age on serum AMH level and the effects of AMH on litter size in Romanov sheep. In the study, a total of 36 Romanov sheep were used as animal material. First blood samples (0th day) were collected from 36 ewes to evaluate AMH and progesterone levels. Second blood samples were collected randomly from 20 ewes 9 days after first sampling to compare AMH levels at two different periods of the oestrous cycle in Romanov ewes. The ewes were categorized into three groups as low, medium and high AMH based on their first AMH levels. Results indicated that serum AMH level did not change during the oestrous and dioestrous phases of the oestrous cycle and two random time points of the oestrous cycle (p > .05). Pearson correlation analysis revealed that there is a high (r = .95) and significant (p < .001) correlation between AMH levels at the 0th (AMH-1) and 9th (AMH-2) days. The effect of AMH level on litter size was found to be significant. Litter size was significantly higher in the high AMH group than in the low AMH group (p < .05). In addition, the age of ewes did not affect serum AMH levels (p > .05). ROC analysis indicates that AMH cut-off value >320 pg/mL with 70% sensitivity and 100% specificity can be used for litter size in Romanov ewes. In conclusion, AMH is highly repeatable and its serum AMH level did not change during the oestrous cycle in Romanov sheep. In addition, AMH affects litter size and can be reliably used as a marker for litter size in Romanov sheep.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The potential of aviary housing for improving laying hen (Gallus gallus domesticus) welfare will be constrained if rearing conditions limit the hens' behavioral ability to take opportunities. Incorporating theories on developmental plasticity and animal agency, this study aimed to determine: (1) whether a choice of litter and perch types during rearing would promote long-lasting changes in use of novel locations and resources, and (2) the influence of timing of choice provision. Methods: Laying hen chicks were assigned to either a "Single-choice" (one litter and perch type) or "Multi-choice" environment (four litter and perch types) during "Early" (day 1-week 4) and "Late" rearing (week 5-15). The environments were switched in half of the 16 pens in week 5, resulting in a 2 × 2 factorial design with four choice environment by period combinations. The allocation of perch and litter space was the same across all treatment combinations. In week 16, all groups were moved to standard aviary laying pens (Laying period, week 16-27). Results: When first moved to the laying pens, hens with Multi-choice in either or both rearing periods were quicker to spread out in their pen than hens with Single-choice throughout rearing. Multi-choice in Early rearing also reduced the latency to use novel elevated structures (perches and nests) in the laying pens. Multi-choice during Late rearing increased success in finding and consuming hidden mealworms (tested in weeks 9-17) and increased the proportion of eggs laid on elevated nesting trays. Numerically, hens switched from Multi-choice to Single-choice in week 5 used the outdoor range less than hens switched from Single-choice to Multi-choice. Discussion: These results support the hypothesis that offering multiple resource choices during rearing improves hens' ability to make the most of new opportunities by being more proactive in exploring and exploiting newly available resources. In different opportunity challenges, hens showed positive outcomes in response to choice during Early, Late or both stages of rearing, suggesting that best results can be obtained by offering environmental choice throughout rearing.

ABSTRACT

Litter-derived dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays an essential role in biogeochemical cycles. In wetlands, species relative abundance and its change have great influences on input features of litter-derived DOM, including chemical characteristics per se and functional diversity of chemical characteristics. Functional diversity is an important factor controlling organic matter biodegradation, but little is known in terms of the DOM. We mixed litter leachates of four macrophytes with a constant concentration (20 mg DOC L-1) but varying dominant species and volume ratios, i.e. 15:1:1:1 (low-evenness), 5:1:1:1 (mid-evenness), and 2:1:1:1 (high-evenness), generating a gradient of chemical characteristics and functional diversity (represented by functional dispersion index FDis). Based on a 42-d incubation, we measured degradation dynamics of these DOM mixtures, and analyzed potential determinants. After 42 days of incubation, the high-evenness treatments, along with mid-evenness treatments sometimes, had most degradation, while the low-evenness treatments always had least degradation. The degradation of mixtures related significantly to not only the volume-weighted mean chemical characteristics but also FDis. Furthermore, the FDis even explained more variation of degradation. The non-additive mixing effects, synergistic effects (faster degradation than predicted) in particular, on degradation of DOM mixtures were rather common, especially in the high- and mid-evenness treatments. Remarkably, the mixing effects increased linearly with the FDis values (r2adj. = 0.426). This study highlights the critical role of functional diversity in regulating degradation of mixed litter-derived DOM. Resulting changes in chemistry and composition of litter leachates due to plant community succession may exert substantial influences on biogeochemical cycling.

ABSTRACT

Sugarcane is a central crop for sugar and ethanol production. Investing in sustainable practices can enhance productivity, technological quality, mitigate impacts, and contribute to a cleaner energy future. Among the factors that help increase the productivity of sugarcane, the physical, chemical and biological parameters of the soil are amongst the most important. The use of poultry litter has been an important alternative for soil improvement, as it acts as a soil conditioner. Therefore, this work aimed to verify the best doses of poultry litter for the vegetative, reproductive and technological components of sugarcane. The experiment was carried out at Usina Denusa Destilaria Nova União S/A in the municipality of Jandaia, GO. The experimental design used was a complete randomized block design with four replications: 5 × 4, totaling 20 experimental units. The evaluated factor consisted of four doses of poultry litter plus the control (0 (control), 2, 4, 6 and 8 t ha-1). In this study, were evaluated the number of tillers, lower stem diameter, average stem diameter, upper stem diameter, plant height, stem weight and productivity. The technological variables of total recoverable sugar, recoverable sugar, Brix, fiber, purity and percentage of oligosaccharides were also evaluated. It was observed, within the conditions of this experiment, that the insertion of poultry litter did not interfere significantly in most biometric, productive and technological variables of the sugarcane. But it can also be inferred that there was a statistical trend toward better results when the sugarcane was cultivated with 4 t ha-1 of poultry litter.

ABSTRACT

This study presents the first comprehensive analysis of anthropogenic debris on the riverbanks of the Ciliwung River, covering upstream to downstream areas. The mean of debris found in each measurement was 32.79 ± 15.38 items/m2 with a weight of 106.00 ± 50.23 g/m2. Plastic debris accounted for over 50 % of all litter items identified and represents 55 % by weight, signifying a significantly high prevalence compared to global studies examining litter along riverbanks. The majority of the plastics found originated from Single-use applications and were predominantly made from Styrofoam. This investigation demonstrated the importance of actions to reduce single use applications and to improve waste management strategies. This can be achieved through proactive initiatives coupled with adaptable approaches, such as implementing effective urban planning and enhancing waste collection capacity.

ABSTRACT

The Protein Phosphatase 6 Catalytic Subunit (PPP6C) is evolutionarily a conserved gene in eukaryotes known to play a significant role in mammalian reproduction. This study aimed to investigate expression patterns of PPP6C and explore its association with litter size in Shaanbei white cashmere (SBWC) goats. Initially, we determined the mRNA expression levels of PPP6C in both male and female goats across multiple tissues. The results showed that PPP6C mRNA was expressed in multiple tissues, with higher levels in the testis and fallopian tubes, suggesting its involvement in goat reproduction. Additionally, we identified a novel 19 bp InDel within the PPP6C gene in a population of 1030 SBWC goats, which exhibited polymorphism. Statistical analysis revealed a significant association between the19 bp InDel mutation and litter size (P < 0.05). Subsequent, bioinformatics analysis, including linkage disequilibrium (LD) block and selective scanning, highlighted the linkage tendency among most InDel loci did not stand out within B-8 block, there were still some InDel loci linked to the 19 bp within a relatively narrow region. Furthermore, comparative analysis with Bezoars, these selective signals all indicated that this gene was under higher selection pressure, implying that the 19 bp InDel locus within the PPP6C is potentially associated with domesticated traits, particularly in relation to litter size. The results of the present study suggest that the PPP6C is a vital candidate gene affecting prolificacy in goats, with implications for selective breeding programs for goat breeds.

ABSTRACT

This study examines microplastic (MP, 1-5 mm) densities in convergence zones in a coastal sea, the Seto Inland Sea, comparing them to those of non-convergence zones and other areas. Notably, Seto convergence zones exhibit MP densities 40 to 300 times higher than non-convergence zones, with an extraordinary density of 3.7 ± 6.3 pieces m-3, similar to densities found in Tokyo Bay as known a MP hotspot. The predominant polymer found was expanded polystyrene, varying seasonally and peaking in summer. Juvenile fish associated with driftweed in these convergence zones face a risk of long-term MP exposure, potentially up to four months. This large number of MPs found in coastal convergence zones is similar to accumulation zones formed in the gyres of open oceans, with strong implications for detrimental effects on coastal marine life. However, these MPs are autochthonous, and may be manageable through local marine plastic waste management.

Plastic pollution is ubiquitous in the marine environment. Beach cleanups are considered a cost-effective mitigative measure with generally few negative environmental impacts. Beached litter is not static, however, and may wash back out to sea or be buried, meaning it is only temporarily available for cleanup. We studied deposition and turnover of litter on three Arctic beaches in Lofoten, Norway, biweekly for 31 months. The mean estimated daily deposition rate was 10 items/100 m, with a median residence time of 99 days. Both processes were impacted by seasons and weather and varied both spatially and temporally. Strong winds during the fall increased litter influx and onshore winds contributed to its loss. Heavier objects and those higher on the beach persisted longer yet were still subject to turnover. Snow temporarily buries litter but protects it in the long run. Given the turnover of litter, frequent (albeit smaller) cleanups can readily remove 3-4 times more litter from circulation in the environment than larger, infrequent cleanups. With limited resources, it is recommended to prioritise late fall cleanups.

ABSTRACT

Background Dorsal thumb carpometacarpal (CMC) instability can occur after traumatic injury and can lead to persistent pain and dysfunction of the hand. We present a case report of a joint-sparing technique for recurrent thumb CMC instability after failed Eaton-Littler procedure. Case Description We describe a technique to repair the dorsal radial ligament and augment the repair with dorsal synthetic tape. To illustrate this technique, we describe a patient who underwent the synthetic tape augmentation procedure for recurrent thumb CMC instability after a failed Eaton-Littler reconstruction. Preoperative and postoperative grip strength, appositional pinch, oppositional pinch, radial abduction, palmar abduction, and postoperative quick Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (QuickDASH) were recorded. At final follow-up 18 months after surgery, the patient had returned to manual work without any functional sequelae. The thumb CMC joint was stable and his postoperative QuickDASH score was 15.9. Literature Review Thumb CMC instability has traditionally been treated with Eaton-Littler ligament reconstruction which uses a slip of flexor carpi radialis tendon to reconstruct the deficient ligaments. More recently, the importance of the dorsal radial ligament in joint stability has been recognized and new procedures have been described to reconstruct the dorsal radial ligament. To our knowledge, synthetic tape augmentation for thumb CMC instability has not yet been described for this pathology. Clinical Relevance Synthetic tape augmentation for dorsal thumb CMC instability may be considered in the management of dorsal thumb CMC joint instability.

Litter size is a significant economic trait during animal reproduction. This current study attempted to decipher whether MTHFR promotes the apoptosis of granulosa cells (GCs) and inhibits their proliferation by investigating the effects of the MTHFR gene using flow cytometry and a Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) assay. MTHFR is linked with ovarian follicle development in the reproductive performance of 104 female New Zealand rabbits. We observed that MTHFR could regulate the mRNA of follicular development-related genes (TIMP1, CITED1, FSHR, GHR, HSD17B1, and STAR) with a qRT-PCR, and we observed the protein expression of CITED1 and GHR using a western blot (WB) analysis. The dual luciferase activity assays helped identify the core promoter region of the MTHFR gene, and the polymorphism of the MTHFR promoter region was studied using Sanger sequencing. The results indicated four single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) within the core promoter region, among which the g.-680C>A locus was significantly associated with both the total and alive litter sizes. Additionally, the CC genotype was associated with the largest total and alive litter sizes, compared to the CA and AA genotypes (p < 0.05). In conclusion, this study investigated the effects of MTHFR on ovarian granulosa cells and its association with selected reproductive parameters in rabbits. The results provide a theoretical foundation for the use of MTHFR as a molecular marker in rabbits.

Microplastics (MPs) are contaminants widely distributed in marine ecosystems. Only few studies approached MP interactions with marine plants, which are considered potential traps for MPs. Here, we determined MPs' densities and types associated with stranded macroalgae on a eutrophic beach in Guanabara Bay. Our results showed that red algae exhibited higher MP densities (1.48 MPs g-1), possibly due to their more branched thalli, than green algae (0.27 MPs g-1). The predominant MP types were blue and white fragments <3 mm in size and polymers were classified as polyethylene and polyvinyl chloride in fragments, and polypropylene in fibers. The higher densities of MPs in algae seemed to be influenced by the inner bay waters. The densities of MPs associated with algae from Guanabara Bay surpassed those reported in other studies. High MPs densities increase the chances that organisms associated with algae entangle or ingest MPs, impacting their health and survival.

ABSTRACT

Plastic pollution poses a significant threat to marine ecosystems. Microfibres from fabrics have become the most prevalent shape of microplastic found in the marine environment. The northern krill (Meganyctiphanes norvegica) is the most abundant euphausiid species in the northern hemisphere, playing a crucial role in various pelagic ecosystems. Anthropogenic microparticles in northern krill was assessed for the first time in samples collected in the Azores on two occasions - April 2019 (n = 480) and April 2023 (n = 480). Analysis of all individuals revealed 533 anthropogenic particles, with an average abundance of 0.56 ± 0.14 items per individual and, no significant differences between years. Microfibres were the most common shape (94.8 %), with the remaining items being fragments (5.2 %), and blue and black were the predominant colours. MicroFourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis (µFTIR) of 22.1 % of the total number of particles, showed that they were mainly cellulosic (65.3 %) - either natural or semisynthetic - followed by polyester (7.6 %). Our finding of microplastics in the northern krill raises important questions due to its crucial role in marine food webs. The intake of anthropogenic particles, particularly those that are 100 % synthetic, suggests that the northern krill may act as a transfer vector of these pollutants to higher trophic levels.

The Yunshang black goat is a renowned mutton specialist breed mainly originating from China that has excellent breeding ability with varying litter sizes. Litter size is an important factor in the economics of goat farming. However, ruminal microbiome structure might be directly or indirectly regulated by pregnancy-associated factors, including litter sizes. Therefore, the current experiment aimed to evaluate the association of different litter sizes (low versus high) with ruminal microbiome structure by 16S rRNA gene sequencing and metabolomic profiling of Yunshang black does. A total of twenty does of the Yunshang Black breed, approximately aged between 3 and 4 years, were grouped (n = 10 goats/group) into low (D-l) and high (D-h) litter groups according to their litter size (the lower group has ≤ 2 kids/litter and the high group has ≧ 3 kids/litter, respectively). All goats were sacrificed, and collected ruminal fluid samples were subjected to 16S rRNA sequencing and LC-MS/MC Analysis for ruminal microbiome and metabolomic profiling respectively. According to PCoA analysis, the ruminal microbiota was not significantly changed by the litter sizes among the groups. The Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes were the most dominant phyla, with an abundance of 55.34% and 39.62%, respectively. However, Ruminococcaceae_UCG-009, Sediminispirochaeta, and Paraprevotella were significantly increased in the D-h group, whereas Ruminococcaceae_UCG-010 and Howardella were found to be significantly decreased in the D-l group. The metabolic profiling analysis revealed that litter size impacts metabolites as 29 and 50 metabolites in positive and negative ionic modes respectively had significant differences in their regulation. From them, 16 and 24 metabolites of the D-h group were significantly down-regulated in the positive ionic mode, while 26 metabolites were up-regulated in the negative ionic mode for the same group. The most vibrant identified metabolites, including methyl linoleate, acetylursolic acid, O-desmethyl venlafaxine glucuronide, melanostatin, and arginyl-hydroxyproline, are involved in multiple biochemical processes relevant to rumen roles. The identified differential metabolites were significantly enriched in 12 different pathways including protein digestion and absorption, glycerophospholipid metabolism, regulation of lipolysis in adipocytes, and the mTOR signaling pathway. Spearman's correlation coefficient analysis indicated that metabolites and microbial communities were tightly correlated and had significant differences between the D-l and D-h groups. Based on the results, the present study provides novel insights into the regulation mechanisms of the rumen microbiota and metabolomic profiles leading to different fertility in goats, which can give breeders some enlightenments to further improve the fertility of Yunshang Black goats.

ABSTRACT

Although sows do not directly enter the market, they play an important role in piglet breeding on farms. They consume large amounts of feed, resulting in a significant environmental burden. Pig farms can increase their income and reduce environmental pollution by increasing the litter size (LS) of swine. PCR-RFLP/SSCP and GWAS are common methods to evaluate single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in candidate genes. We conducted a systematic meta-analysis of the effect of SNPs on pig LS. We collected and analysed data published over the past 30 years using traditional and network meta-analyses. Trial sequential analysis (TSA) was used to analyse population data. Gene set enrichment analysis and protein-protein interaction network analysis were used to analyse the GWAS dataset. The results showed that the candidate genes were positively correlated with LS, and defects in PCR-RFLP/SSCP affected the reliability of candidate gene results. However, the genotypes with high and low LSs did not have a significant advantage. Current breeding and management practices for sows should consider increasing the LS while reducing lactation length and minimizing the sows' non-pregnancy period as much as possible.

ABSTRACT

The significant deposition of tail fat in sheep has a profound impact on the economic benefits of animal husbandry. Furthermore, increasing the litter size is a crucial means of enhancing economic benefits. The BMPR1B and T/Brachyury genes are considered major functional genes that could affect sheep litter size and tail bone number, respectively. In this study, we employed direct sequencing to identify specific mutations of the BMPR1B gene in Gobi short tail sheep and carried out genotyping using MassARRAY technology for each variant of both the BMPR1B and T genes. Significant associations were demonstrated between the c.687G>A mutation of BMPR1B and the litter size in both the Gobi short tail sheep and Ujimqin sheep breeds. Meanwhile, the g.30058882_30058873GCAGATTAAAIndel mutation was significantly associated with the litter size in Gobi short tail sheep. These findings may provide valuable genetic markers for expanding sheep litter size. In addition, we also confirmed that the frequency of tail-bone-number-related T alleles was significantly higher in Gobi short tail sheep than in longer-tailed Ujimqin sheep.

ABSTRACT

Platforms are structures built by coypus for various purposes, such as reproduction, resting, and thermoregulation. In a coastal wetland of central Italy, during a study aimed at investigating the characteristics of coypu's platforms, it was recorded, for the first time worldwide, the presence of plastic in these structures. Through a transect survey, we censused 83 platforms, among which three (3.61%) were found with presence of macro- and megaplastics (polystyrene, polypropylene, and low-density polyethylene in film form; polyester, polyamide, and expanded polystyrene in fragments). Through the FTIR spectra, it was possible to highlight the degradation of the polymeric materials. To stimulate possible in-depth investigations at the level of the food chain (e.g., coypu predators, including canids) in wet habitats, we discussed possible causes and implications of plastic presence in coypus' nest structures.

ABSTRACT

Agricultural grasslands play an important role in conserving the biodiversity of the European cultural landscape. Both, litter cover and soil nutrient availability, change with grassland management, but it is not well-studied how seedling recruitment and growth of multiple grassland species are influenced by their single or combined effects. Therefore, we studied the effects of nitrogen fertilization (100 kg N per year and ha) and litter cover (250 gdw per m2) on seedling recruitment and growth of 75 temperate grassland species (16 graminoid species, 51 forb species, 8 legume species) in a full factorial microcosm experiment. Overall, fertilizer reduced seedling emergence, while litter cover increased it even when combined with fertilization. Fertilization increased seedling height and biomass, and the combination of fertilizer and litter resulted in even stronger responses. Litter cover alone did not influence seedling biomass or seedling height. While the overall direction of treatment effects was similar across functional groups, their strengths were mostly weaker in graminoids than in non-legume forbs and legumes. Positive litter effects on seedling emergence were stronger in large-seeded species. Positive fertilization effects on seedling growth were stronger in small-seeded species, while their seedling biomass was negatively affected by litter cover. In summary, our results show for multiple grassland species that the combination of litter cover and fertilization modulates their single effects. The varying sensitivity of how grassland species representing different functional groups and seed sizes respond with their seedling emergence and growth to litter cover and nitrogen fertilization indicates that the consequences of land-use change on grassland diversity and composition already start to manifest in the earliest stages of the plant life cycle.

Based on a specimen preserved in the snakebite treatment center in eastern Nepal, this study aims to analyse brief life history (i.e., litter size, parturition date, habitat preference) of Enhydris enhydris, effects of its envenoming, and anthropogenic threat on its populations. One euthanized gravid female E. enhydris collected alive from eastern Nepal by a snakebite victim was examined. The gravid female gave birth to 23 litters on July 11, 2012. This parturition suggested high reproductive potential. Its bite to a man walking on the road caused no ill-effects. However, the use of tourniquet as a part of prehospital care might be detrimental or be obstacle for in-hospital care of snakebite. The conflicts between E. enhydris and humans at roads and human-activity areas are inevitable across the distribution ranges of this species. The continued anthropogenic impact can threaten its populations. This study finding can be a basis for assessing conservation status and options for its conservation as well as prehospital care and prevention of its bites.
