ABSTRACT

The objective of this study was to analyse microbiological organisms in different locations and regions for physical activity in the city of João Pessoa, Brazil. Samples were collected on various objects used, such as: mattresses, drinking fountains, gloves, cell phones and others. The samples were collected in João Pessoa-PB, following the Standard Operating Procedure-SOP/ Microbiology of a specialized laboratory. The collection took place in the five macro-regions: North, South, East, West and Center. Foreach region samples were collected in one public place (square), a private one (gym) and one school (public or private), totaling fifteen collected sites and 450 samples. The following microorganisms were studied in all analyzed surfaces: Bacillus sp, Escherichia Coli, Klebsiella sppor Enterobacter sppand Coag. Neg. Staphylococcus.All regions had a high contamination level by some microorganism. The highest rates were found in the western, central and northern regions -96, 94 and 93% respectively. The Coag. Neg.Staphylococcus presented the highest and lowest incidence rates in the South and East regions, with 43.33 and 6.67%, respectively, as well as Klebsiella sppor Enterobacter spp, which presented high levels. It is concluded that there is a microorganisms' contamination in the most varied places and regions where physical activity practices are developed, with a predominance of Coag. Neg.Staphylococcusand Klebsiella sppor Enterobacter spp. These results lead to a warning about the hygiene importance in places for physical activity practice, especially in pandemic times (COVID-19), since almost all the evaluated surfaces were contaminated.

ABSTRACT Objectives: to evaluate different monitoring methods for detecting the presence of organic or biological matter before and after the cleaning and disinfection processes of the operating room. Methods: this is a cross-sectional study based on visual inspection, adenosine triphosphate levels and microbiological culture for the assessment of cleaning and disinfection. Results: 93.3% of the surfaces inspected visually for this study purpose were considered clean, even when high levels of adenosine triphosphate and microbiological analysis detected presence of microorganisms relevant to biofilm formation. Conclusions: the cleaning and disinfection processes reduced the microbial load and organic matter of the inspected surfaces, demonstrated by the values obtained by the adenosine triphosphate bioluminescence assay and microbiological analysis, but the visual inspection as a unique tool to assess the surfaces' cleanliness may give a false impression of clean environment.


RESUMO Objetivos: avaliar diferentes métodos de monitoramento da presença de matéria orgânica ou biológica entre a limpeza e a desinfecção da sala cirúrgica. Métodos: trata-se de um estudo transversal utilizando a inspeção visual, amostras de trifosfato de adenosina e cultura microbiológica como indicadores para avaliação da limpeza e a desinfecção. Resultados: 93,3% das áreas avaliadas visualmente neste estudo apresentavam-se visualmente limpas, mesmo na presença de altos níveis de bioluminescência no resultado de trifosfato de adenosina e análises microbiológicas detectando a presença de microrganismos relevantes para a formação de biofilmes. Conclusões: o processo de limpeza e desinfecção reduziu a carga microbiana e matéria orgânica das superfícies avaliadas, demonstrada pelos resultados obtidos pelo trifosfato de adenosina e avaliação microbiológica, mas a inspeção visual como ferramenta única para avaliar a eficácia da limpeza das superfícies, pode gerar uma falsa impressão de ambiente limpo.


RESUMEN Objetivos: evaluar diferentes métodos de monitoreo de la presencia de materia orgánica o biológica entre la limpieza y desinfección de la sala quirúrgica. Métodos: estudio transversal utilizando la inspección visual, muestras de adenosina trifosfato y cultura microbiológica como indicadores para evaluación de la limpieza y desinfección. Resultados: 93,3% de las áreas evaluadas visualmente en este estudio se presentaban visualmente limpias, mismo en la presencia de altos niveles de bioluminiscencia en el resultado de adenosina trifosfato y análisis microbiológicos detectando la presencia de microorganismos relevantes para la formación de biofilms. Conclusiones: el proceso de limpieza y desinfección redujo la carga microbiana y materia orgánica de las superficies evaluadas, demostrada por los resultados obtenidos por el adenosina trifosfato y evaluación microbiológica, pero la inspección visual como herramienta única para evaluar la eficacia de la limpieza de las superficies, puede generar una falsa impresión de ambiente limpio.

Introducción: El estetoscopio se ha descrito como un fómite capaz de transmitir patemas de tipo infeccioso a los trabajadores de la salud Objetivo: Caracterizar la presencia de contaminación microbiana en estetoscopios utilizados por proveedores de salud. Métodos: Estudio transversal en 50 muestras microbiológicas obtenidas de estetoscopios pertenecientes a proveedores de salud que laboran en el Hospital Pediátrico Cerro, de junio-octubre de 2019. Se aplicó una encuesta para evaluar variables demográficas y epidemiológicas de sus titulares relacionadas con la aplicación de medidas descontaminantes. Se examinaron los resultados mediante el análisis porcentual y prueba de Ji-cuadrada para buscar asociación significativa (p≤0,05) con los hábitos higiénicos. Resultados: El 100 por ciento de los estetoscopios están contaminados. Los aislamientos más frecuentes fueron: Staphylococcus alba 40,3 por ciento, Staphylococcus aureus 32,6 por ciento y Klebsiella pneumoniae 3,8 por ciento. Las áreas de mayor contagio fueron las de misceláneas (44,2 por ciento) y de respiratorio (36,5 por ciento). El personal con notable contaminación en sus equipos fueron los alumnos (81,4 por ciento) y los especialistas (14,8 por ciento). Las causas que determinaron no practicar la desinfección en los alumnos fue la falta de enseñanza (45,4 por ciento); en los especialistas, la carencia de hábitos (33,3 por ciento) y la falta de desinfectante (66,3 por ciento). Las bacterias gramnegativas fueron sensibles en su mayoría a los aminoglucósidos y Staphylococcus aureus a la clindamicina, vancomicina, ciprofloxacino y cloranfenicol. Conclusiones: Existe alta frecuencia de contaminación en los estetoscopios utilizados por los proveedores de salud motivado por la falta de hábito de desinfección en médicos y su desconocimiento en alumnos(AU)


Introduction: Stethoscopes has been described as a fomite which is able to transmit infectious agents to health care workers. Objective: To describe the presence of microbial contamination in stethoscopes used by health care providers. Methods: Cross-sectional study in 50 microbiological samples obtained from stethoscopes belonging to health care providers whom worked in Cerro Pediatric Hospital from June to October, 2019. It was applied a survey to evaluate demographic and epidemiologic variables of the owners related with the implementation of disinfection measures. The results were examined through percentage analysis and the Ji-square test to look for significative relation (p≤0,05) with hygene habits. Results: 100 percent of the stethoscopes were contamined. The most frequent isolated agents were: Staphylococcus alba 40.3 percent, Staphylococcus aureus 32.6 percent and Klebsiella pneumoniae 3.8 percent. The hospital areas with more contagion were: Miscellany (44.2 percent) and Respiratory (36.5 percent). The personnel with more contamination in their equipments were: students (81.4 percent) and specialists (14.8 percent). The cause of not doing the disinfection processes in the students was the lack of knowledge (45.4 percent); and in the specialists was the lack of hygene habits and the lack of disinfectant solutions (66.3 percent). Negative Gran bacteria were mostly sensitive to aminoglycosides and Staphylococcus aureus to clindamycin, vancomycin, ciprofloxacin and cloramphenicol. Conclusions: There is high frequency of contamination in the stethoscopes used by health care providers, mainly motived by the lack of disinfection habits in physicians and lack of knowledge on it in the students(AU)

ABSTRACT

Objetivo: analisar a qualidade microbiológica da água de cinco escolas públicas da cidade de Marabá-PA e correlacionar com possíveis fatores de desigualdades sociais em saúde no entorno dessas escolas. Metodologia: as análises microbiológicas foram realizadas em cinco escolas públicas no interior do Pará, usando a técnica do número mais provável, associado a registro das características do entorno das escolas. O teste T Student foi utilizado para verificar as diferenças entre os resultados microbiológicos da água entre as escolas em que houve contaminação e também para testar as diferenças entre a vulnerabilidade socioambiental urbana no entorno das escolas e a contaminação da água. Resultados: observaram-se diferenças estatisticamente significantes entre as escolas E3 e E5 no teste para coliformes totais (p=0,043) e termotolerantes (p=0,008). A partir das condições de vulnerabilidade socioambiental urbana no entorno a escolas, encontrou-se diferenças estatisticamente significativas entre as escolas apenas em relação às condições de saneamento (p=0,05). Considerações Finais: as condições microbiológicas da água utilizada em duas escolas são insatisfatórias, o que indica risco à saúde para alunos, professores e funcionários das escolas.


Objective: to analyze the microbiological quality of water in five public schools in the city of Marabá-PA and to correlate with possible factors of social inequalities in health around these schools. Methodology: the analysis of the microbiological water quality was carried out in five schools in the interior of Pará, using the most likely number technique, associated with recording the characteristics of the schools' surroundings. We used Student T test to verify the differences between the microbiological results of water between the schools where there was contamination and to test the differences between the urban socio-environmental vulnerability around the schools and the water contamination. Results: statistically significant differences were observed between schools E3 and E5 in the test for total coliforms (p=0.043) and thermotolerants (p=0.008). We found statistically significant differences were found between schools only in relation to sanitation conditions (p=0.05). Final Considerations: the microbiological conditions of the water used in two schools are unsatisfactory, which indicates a health risk for students, teachers and school team.

Introdução: a pandemia provocada pelo 2019 Novel Coronavírus (COVID-19) provocou um desafio global de saúde pública, com repercussões em diversos setores da sociedade. As práticas médicas necessitaram adaptar-se no atendimento ao doente portador do COVID-19 ou suspeito. Métodos: realizou-se pesquisa bibliográfica de publicações e de diretrizes de sociedades médicas em relação às abordagens cirúrgicas de emergência nesta atual pandemia. Resultados: o material bibliográfico ainda é escasso, indefinido e de baixa evidência, mas são adequados neste momento inicial de enfrentamento do COVID-19 no Brasil. Conclusão: para reduzir o risco de contaminação dos profissionais de saúde, as técnicas e decisões cirúrgicas precisam adaptar-se ao cenário de pandemia do COVID-19.(AU)


Introduction: the pandemic caused by the 2019 Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) has caused a global public health challenge, with repercussions in several sectors of society. Medical practices needed to adapt in the care of patients with or suspected of having COVID-19. Methods: Bibliographic research of publications and guidelines of medical societies regarding emergency surgical approaches in this current pandemic was carried out. Results: the bibliographic material is still scarce, undefined and of low evidence, but which are adequate in this initial moment of coping with COVID-19 in Brazil. Conclusion: to reduce the risk of contamination of health professionals, surgical techniques and decisions need to adapt to the pandemic scenario of COVID-19.(AU)

ABSTRACT Objective To discuss the risks related to the possibilities of accidents and contamination in autopsy rooms, especially the biological risk. Methods This is an exploratory study. The databases Lilacs, MEDLINE and SciELO virtual library were searched; from 2000 until 2017; from the following inclusion criteria: articles available in full, in Portuguese, English and Spanish languages; and those that portrayed the central theme of the article. Results 53 articles were analyzed, to following the sub-themes: chemical, ergonomic, biological and accident agents; exposure to radioactive materials; electrical and electronic equipment. Conclusions The death cause is essential for epidemiological surveillance. The prevalence of diseases in the population poses risk to autopsy room professionals. Often these diseases are not detected before death; can coexist with other conditions and be ignored; or don't have morphological evidence at autopsy. M.tuberculosis, hepatitis virus, HIV and prions were the main pathogens identified. They can be transmitted by blood and aerosols; but there are other risks such as sharps, chemicals and radioactive materials.(AU)


RESUMEN Objetivo Discutir los riesgos relacionados con las posibilidades de accidentes y contaminación en las salas de autopsias, especialmente el riesgo biológico. Método Este es un estudio exploratorio. Se realizaron búsquedas en las bases de datos Lilacs, MEDLINE y la biblioteca virtual SciELO, desde 2000 hasta 2017, de los siguientes criterios de inclusión: artículos disponibles en su totalidad en portugués, inglés y español, y aquellos que retrataron el tema central del artículo. Resultados Se analizaron 53 artículos, siguiendo los subtemas agentes químicos, ergonómicos, biológicos y de accidentes; exposición a materiales radiactivos; equipos eléctricos y electrónicos. Conclusiones La causa de muerte es esencial para la vigilancia epidemiológica. La prevalencia de enfermedades en la población representa un riesgo para los profesionales de la sala de autopsias. A menudo, estas enfermedades no se detectan antes de la muerte; pueden coexistir con otras condiciones y ser ignoradas, o no se tiene evidencia morfológica en la autopsia. M. tuberculosis, virus de la hepatitis, VIH y priones fueron los principales patógenos identificados. Se pueden transmitir por sangre y aerosoles; pero existen otros riesgos como objetos punzantes, productos químicos y materiales radiactivos.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Los profesionales de la salud están expuestos a una gran variedad de microorganismos desde esporas, bacterias, hongos, virus y protozoarios que pueden encontrarse en la sangre y/o saliva de los pacientes. Cualquiera de estos microorganismos puede causar una enfermedad infectocontagiosa a través de pinchazos y/o salpicaduras producidas por el aerosol durante la práctica dental. Objetivo: Determinar la presencia bacteriana en las piezas de alta velocidad utilizadas en la práctica clínica. Material y métodos: Es un estudio experimental, observacional y transversal en el que se evaluó la contaminación de 30 piezas de alta velocidad utilizadas en la práctica clínica. Previo al estudio se efectuó una estandarización obteniendo una kappa del 0.85. Se realizó una base de datos en el programa SPSS versión 22, con el que se llevó a cabo el análisis descriptivo para determinar medidas de tendencia central. Resultados: 73.3% de las muestras analizadas tuvieron crecimiento bacteriano, entre las bacterias que se encontraron resultó que 54.5% de ellas fueron bacterias Gram positivas y el resto Gram negativas. La bacteria con mayor presencia en la muestra fue el Bacillus en 45.5% seguida del Streptococcus en 27.3%, el restante 27.2% fue Staphylococcus, Coccus y Streptobacillus. Conclusiones: El uso correcto de las piezas de alta, así como su desinfección en la consulta dental es de suma importancia, ya que nos ayudan a evitar contaminaciones cruzadas y a prevenir que dentro del área de trabajo se formen focos de infección (AU)


Health professionals are exposed to a wide variety of microorganisms from spores, bacteria, fungi, viruses and protozoa that can be found in the blood and/or saliva of patients. Any of these microorganisms can cause an infectious disease through punctures and / or splashes produced by the aerosol during dental practice.1,2 Objective: To determine the bacterial presence in the high-speed pieces used in clinical practice. Material and methods: It are an experimental, observational and transversal study; where the contamination of 30 high-speed pieces used in clinical practice was evaluated. Prior to the study, a standardization was made obtaining a kappa of 0.85. A database was made in the program SPSS version 22, with which the descriptive analysis was carried out to determine measures of central tendency. Results: 73.3% of the analyzed samples showed bacterial growth, among the bacteria that were found, 54.5% of them were gram-positive bacteria and the rest were gram-negative. The bacterium with the highest presence in the sample was for Bacillus in 45.5% followed by Streptococcus in 27.3%, the remaining 27.2% was for Staphylococcus, Coccus and Streptobacillus. Conclusions: The correct use of the discharging parts, as well as their disinfection in the dental practice is of the utmost importance as they help us to avoid cross contamination and to prevent foci of infection from forming within the work area (AU)

Introduction: Evaluate the efficacy of an information system addressed to nursing staff to lower the blood culture contamination rate. Methods: A blind clinical trial was conducted at Internal Medicine and Emergency Departments during 2011. After following a reeducation program in BC extraction, participants were randomly selected in a 1:1 ratio. Every participant of the experimental group was informed of each worker's individual performance; whereas the control group was only informed of the global results. Results: A total of 977 blood extractions were performed in 12 months. Blood culture contamination rate was 7.5%. This rate was higher in the Emergency Department than in Internal Medicine (10% vs. 3.8%; p=0.001). Factors associated with the higher risk of contamination were, in the univariate analysis, the extraction through a recently implanted blood route and the time of professional experience, while those associated with a lower risk were the extraction in Internal Medicine and through a butterfly needle. On multivariate analysis, extraction through a recently placed access was an independent risk factor for an increased contamination rate (OR 2.29; 95%CI 1.18-4.44, p=0.014), while individual information about the blood culture results (OR 0.11; 95%CI 0.023-0.57; p=0.008), and more than 9 years of professional experience were asso-ciated with fewer contaminations (OR 0.30; 95%CI 0.12-0.77; p=0.012). In the intervention group the contamination rate diminished by a 26 %. Conclusions: Drawing blood cultures through a recently taken peripheral venous access increased their risk of contamination. The intervention informing the nurse staff of the contamination rate is effective to decrease it


Objetivos: Evaluar la eficacia de un sistema de información dirigido al personal de enfermería, en la reducción de la tasa de contaminación de los hemocultivos. Métodos: Durante el año 2011, se realizó un ensayo clínico en los servicios de Medicina Interna y de Urgencias. Después de seguir un programa de reeducación en la extracción de los hemocultivos, los participantes, fueron aleatorizados en una proporción de 1:1. En el grupo de intervención se informó del porcentaje de hemocultivos contaminados de cada profesional y en el grupo control se aportaba la información del porcentaje global de contaminaciones. Resultados: Durante un periodo de 12 meses se realizaron 977 extracciones. La tasa de contaminación de los hemocultivos fue del 7,5%. Esta tasa fue mayor en Urgencias que en Medicina Interna (10% versus 3,8%, p=0,001). Los factores asociados con mayor riesgo de contaminación fueron, en el análisis univariable: la extracción a través de una vía sanguínea recientemente implantada y el tiempo de experiencia profesional; mientras que los que se asociaron con menor riesgo fueron la extracción en Medicina Interna (versus en Urgencias) y a través de una palomilla. En el análisis multivariable, la extracción de los hemocultivos de una vía recientemente implantada se relacionó de forma independiente con un incremento de las contaminaciones (OR 2,29, IC 95% 1,18-4,44, p=0,014),mientras que la información individual sobre los resultados de los hemocultivos (OR 0.11; IC 95% 0,023-0,57; p=0,008) y la experiencia profesional mayor de 9 años, lo hizo con menos contaminaciones (OR 0,30, IC 95% 0,12-0,77, p=0,012). En el grupo de intervención la tasa de contaminaciones se redujo en un 26%. Conclusión: La extracción de hemocultivos a través de una vena periférica recientemente implantada aumentó el riesgo de contaminación de los mismos. La intervención informativa a los enfermeros de la tasa de contaminación de los hemocultivos, es eficaz para disminuirla

ABSTRACT

Objectives: to characterize work accidents with biological material according to the type of exposure and to describe the profile of health care professionals who suffered these accidents. Method:cross-sectional and retrospective epidemiological study. A total of 1,269 reports of occupational accidents with biological material were collectedthrough the SINAN and analyzed through descriptive and inferential statistics. For the analysis of association between the selected variables, the chi-square test and Pearson's correlation were used. Results:it was identified that the type of exposure is directly related to the accident, time performing the work, and the causer agent of the accident, with a predominance of females, in youngadults, with high school education, in the nursingarea, with professional experience equal to or less than 5 years. Conclusion:the importance of good practices, such as the use of personal protective equipment and vaccination schedule, also the follow-up of post-exposure of professionals to work environment accidents with biological material, with the primary purpose of promoting worker health and safety andthe risk management in institutionsare emphasized.


Objetivos:caracterizar os acidentes de trabalho com material biológico de acordo com o tipo de exposição e descrever o perfil dos profissionais dos serviços de saúde que sofreram esses acidentes. Método:estudo epidemiológico, transversal e retrospectivo.Fizeram parte da pesquisa 1.269 notificações deacidentes de trabalho com material biológico, os quais foram coletados através do Sistema de Informação de Agravos de Notificação (SINAN) e analisados por meio de estatística descritiva e inferencial. Para a análise de associação entre as variáveis selecionadas, utilizou-se o teste quiquadrado e a Correlação de Pearson.Resultados:identificou-se que o tipo de exposição tem relação direta com a circunstância do acidente, com o tempo de trabalho e com o agente causador do acidente, com predominância do sexo feminino, em adultos jovens, com escolaridade em nível médio, atuando principalmente na área da enfermagem, com experiência profissional igual ou inferior a 5 anos. Conclusão:ressalta-se a importância das boas práticas, como o uso de equipamentos de proteção individuale esquema vacinal, e o acompanhamento do profissional pós-exposição a acidentes de trabalho com material biológico, com intuito primordial de promover a saúde do trabalhador e agestão de riscos nas instituições.

ABSTRACT

O Doce de leite é um importante derivado do leite, amplamente consumido em nosso País e possui uma grande importância nutricional. Diante do crescimento do consumo do doce de leite por parte da população, surge a preocupação de garantir que este alimento esteja isento de qualquer sujidade, mantendo-se o padrão de qualidade e identidade do produto. O objetivo do trabalho foi investigar a presença de contaminantes físicos e biológicos em quinze amostras de doce de leite processadas no setor de laticínio de uma instituição pública de ensino superior do Ceará. A pesquisa, de caráter experimental com abordagem qualitativa, foi desenvolvida no Laboratório de Segurança Alimentar e Nutricional (LABSAN) da Universidade Estadual do Ceará, no período de 11 de novembro de 2015 a 12 de fevereiro de 2016. As metodologias empregadas na avaliação das amostras foram: pesquisa macroscópica e microscópica de contaminantes físicos e biológicos. Foi realizada a inspeção das amostras sob uma superfície plana e os materiais estranhos foram removidos fazendo-se o uso de pinça dente de rato e colher de aço inoxidável estéril, onde os contaminantes foram identificados e caracterizados. A contaminação biológica foi avaliada por meio do método de sedimentação espontânea, com modificação. Verificou- se que todas as amostras estavam contaminadas, dentre a amostragem, 29% estavam contaminadas com ácaros, 23% tinham fibras, 18% com pelos, 12% apresentavam fragmentos de insetos e 12% continham larva de inseto. Os achados significativos e sua comparação com os padrões estabelecidos pelas legislações sanitárias vigentes, permitiram sugerir que as amostras do doce de leite estão inapropriadas para o consumo humano, sendo importante adotar medidas que reduzam as chances de contaminação, a fim de favorecer a prevenção de doenças veiculadas por esses produtos.


The Milk caramel is an important derivative of milk, widely consumed in our country and has great nutritional importance. Faced with the growth of the consumption of sweets by the population, a safety concern arises that this food is free of any dirt, maintaining the standard of quality and identity of the product. The objective of this work is to investigate a presence of physical and biological contaminants in fifteen samples of processed milk candy in the education sector of a public institution of higher education in Ceará. An experimental research in a qualitative approach developed at the Laboratory of Food and Nutrition Security (LABSAN) of the State University of Ceará, from November 11, 2015 to February 12, 2016. As methodologies used in the evaluation of samples: research macroscopic and microscopic analysis of physical and biological contaminants. Samples were inspected under a flat surface and the foreign materials were removed using metal and stainless steel tongs where the contaminants were identified and characterized. A biological contamination was evaluated through the spontaneous sedimentation method, with modification. Twenty-nine percent of the samples were contaminated with mites, 23% with fibers, 18% with hairs, 12% with insect remains and 12% with insect larvae. Considering the significant findings and these have been compared with the standards established by law, the current sanitary solutions allowed to suggest that as samples of dulce de leche are inappropriate for human consumption, it is important to adopt measures that reduce the chances of contamination, in order to favor disease prevention through products.

Estudos de revisão sobre surtos associados à transmissão hídrica revelaram que os protozoários parasitas Cryptosporidium parvum e Giardia duodenalis (sinonímia: G. lamblia e G. intestinalis) são os principais responsáveis pelo maior número de casos registrados em todo o mundo. A contaminação das águas superficiais que servem ao abastecimento público por estes protozoários representa risco à saúde humana e animal, pois ambos parasitas apresentam resistência à cloração, processo convencional utilizado para desinfecção em Estações de Tratamento de Água (ETAs).Em vista desta lacuna, o presente estudo propõe identificar espécies e genótipos de Cryptosporidium e Giardia a partir de 128 amostras de águas superficiais de 11 mananciais do estado de São Paulo, de acordo com o Método 1623.1 (USEPA, 2012). Para identificar estes parasitas, foi realizada a recuperação dos (oo) cistos a partir de lâminas raspadas, seguindo o protocolo adaptado da USEPA, em seguida, utilizou-se o PCR em tempo real para identificar os genes 18S rRNA para Cryptosporidium e SSU para Giardia. Os resultados mostraram que a frequência de ocorrência desses protozoários nos pontos de captação foi de 29,7% para Giardia e 30,4% para Cryptosporidium. Review studies on waterborne outbreaks have been showing that Cryptosporidium parvum and Giardia duodenalis (synonym: G. lamblia and G. intestinalis) are the primarily responsible for the highest number of the cases recorded worldwide. Contamination of surface waters catchments by these protozoa is a risk factor to human health because both parasites are resistant to chlorination, which is a conventional process used for disinfection in water treatment plants (WTP). The present study aimed to identify species of Cryptosporidium and Giardia recovered from surface water catchment samples from 11 municipalities from the State of São Paulo, totalizing 128 samples. Quantification of both parasites was carried out according to method 1623.1 (USEPA, 2012). In order to identify parasites, the recovering of (oo)cysts from slides followed USEPA´s protocol by scraping slides, then Real Time PCR using the 18S rRNA genes for Cryptosporidium and SSU for Giardia were carried out. Results showed that the frequency of occurrence of these protozoa at the catchment points was 29,7% for Giardia and 30,4% for Cryptosporidium. Objetivo: verificar o conhecimento dos discentes do curso de enfermagem acerca da norma regulamentadora 32 e as condutas pré e pós exposição a materiais biológicos, além de identificar a situação vacinal dos discentes. Método: estudo quantitativo descritivo de corte transversal. A coleta de dados foi realizada, na Universidade Estadual do Sudoeste da Bahia, Jequié, entre agosto e setembro de 2014 com 163 discentes. Utilizou-se um questionário, procedido análise através do programa Statistical Package for Social Sciences/ SPSS, 21.0. Estudo aprovado pelo Comitê de Ética em Pesquisa, parecer nº 242.588/2013, CAAE: 04830812.7.0000.0055. Resultados: somente 34% relataram conhecer a NR 32; baixos índices de imunização contra hepatite B, pois apenas 22,7% realizaram o exame anti-Hbs; e apenas um dos estudantes que sofreram exposição com materiais biológicos realizou atendimento conforme protocolo do Ministério da Saúde. Conclusão: os estudantes de enfermagem estão susceptíveis no campo prático, onde se percebe uma maior necessidade na abordagem sobre biossegurança no contexto de ensino.


Objective: to ascertain nursing students' knowledge of Regulatory Standard 32 and conduct pre- and post-exposure to biological materials, in addition to identifying their vaccination status. Method: in this descriptive, quantitative, cross-sectional study, data were collected using a questionnaire, from 163 students at Southwest Bahia State University, Jequié, between August and September 2014, and were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS, 21.0). The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee (Opinion No. 242.588/2013, CAAE: 04830812.7.0000.0055). Results: only 34% reported knowledge of NR 32; hepatitis B immunization rates were low (only 22.7% performed the anti-HBs test); and only one of the students exposed to biological materials had performed care according to the Ministry of Health protocol. Conclusion: nursing students are at risk in their practical activities, where greater need can be seen for teaching to address biosafety.

Objetivos: Establecer el nivel de conocimiento de infecciones asociadas frente al manejo de residuos biológicos peligrosos en el desarrollo de actividades en la clínica odontológica de la universidad andina Néstor Cáceres Velásquez. Materiales y métodos: El estudio realizado se sustenta de carácter documental descriptivo, porque tiene una orientación a descubrir el real significado de los comportamientos de los estudiantes de la Facultad de Odontología frente al uso de la clínica odontología de la universidad corroborado mediante la aplicación de encuestas pre codificadas a los alumnos que desarrollan las cursos prácticos en la clínica odontológica. Resultados: En los estudiantes del campo clínico odontológico un 57% que representa a 86 estudiantes con un bajo conocimiento, un 37% que representa a 56 alumnos tienen un conocimiento medio y solo un 5% que representa a 8 alumnos manifiesta tener un conocimiento alto. Conclusiones: Se establece un conocimiento regular en un 58% sobre las infecciones asociadas al manejo de residuos biológicos peligrosos, encontrando que en un 30% aun consideran que estas no transmiten infecciones donde solo en un 58% utilizan guantes o en un 31% pinzas para operar los residuos biológicos peligrosos. Objectives: To establish the level of knowledge of associated infections in relation to the management of hazardous biological waste in the development of activities in the dentistry clinic of the Universidad Andina Néstor Cáceres Velásquez. Materials and methods: The study is based on descriptive documentary, because it has an orientation to discover the real meaning of the behaviors of students of the Faculty of Dentistry versus the use of clinical dentistry of the university corroborated by the application of surveys Pre coded to the students who develop the practical courses in the dental clinic. Results: In the dental clinic students, 57% represent 86 students with low knowledge, 37% representing 56 students have an average knowledge and only 5% representing 8 students shows a high knowledge. Conclusions: A 58% regular knowledge on infections associated with the management of hazardous biological waste is established, finding that 30% still consider that they do not transmit infections where only 58% use gloves or 31% operate hazardous biological waste. ABSTRACT

As dificuldades do reprocessamento dos endoscópicos gastrointestinais, o risco de contaminação e os casos de infecções representam desafios amplamente conhecidos na comunidade cientifica. Neste sentido, investigou-se o reprocessamento de endoscópios gastrointestinais subsidiado nos níveis de sujidade, contaminação microbiana e presença de biofilme. Trata-se de um experimento laboratorial realizado em três fases por meio da bioluminescência com adenosina trifosfato (ATP) para avaliação do nível de sujidade; polimerase chain reaction (PCR) para carga bacteriana e cultura microbiana para determinação do nível de contaminação. Ainda, avaliou-se as superfícies internas de canais de endoscópios por microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV) quanto à presença de biofilme. A análise estatística dos dados foi subsidiada em medidas de tendência central, testes de Man-Whitney, Wilcoxon e Spearman, p<0,05, por meio do software IBM SPSS Statistics versão 23.0. A avaliação de 99 endoscópios antes e após limpeza manual demonstrou a eficácia do processo na redução de sujidade (p<0,001) e contaminação microbiana (p=0,03), inclusive com baixo percentual da amostra com micro-organismos viáveis. Dos 75 endoscópios avaliados após o reprocessamento evidenciou-se uma redução do nível de sujidade (todos com <50URL, interna e externamente); entretanto a presença de carga bacteriana foi de 3log de bactéria/mL e 10,6% de positividade das culturas. Os micro-organismos isolados dos lavados de endoscópios após o reprocessamento foram Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus hominis, Staphylococcus capitis, Roseomonas gilardii e Micrococcus luteus. Na avaliação dos canais de biópsia de endoscópios provenientes do Brasil observou-se maior contaminação do que os da Austrália (p<0,001). Todos os canais apresentaram biofilme e danos em suas superfícies, entretanto as amostras brasileiras apresentaram particularidades, como, presença de hemácias, neutrófilos e fungos. Assim, observou-se que apesar da baixa carga microbiana nos endoscópios há o risco potencial de infecção cruzada associado ao biofilme, ameaçando a qualidade e segurança do reprocessamento. Adiciona-se a necessidade de avanços tecnológicos e científicos contra o biofilme na prática do reprocessamento de endoscópios


The difficulties on gastrointestinal endoscope reprocessing, contamination risk and outbreaks are a recognized challenge in science. It was investigated gastrointestinal endoscope reprocessing for dirtiness, contamination level and presence of biofilm. Laboratorial experiment performed in three phases using adenosine triphosphate (ATP) bioluminescence for dirtiness evaluation; polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for bacterial load and microbial culture for contamination level evaluation. In addition, it was evaluated biofilm on endoscope channels internal surfaces by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Statistics analysis was performed by descriptive analysis, ManWhitney, Wilcoxon and Spearman tests, p<0,05, using IBM SPSS Statistics versão 23.0. Before and after cleaning analysis of 99 endoscopes showed it efficacy on reducing dirtiness (p<0,001) and microbial contamination level (p=0,03), including a small percentage of culturable microorganism. From 75 endoscopes tested after reprocessing demonstrated dirtiness level reduction (all samples <50RUL, from internal and external area); but, also, presence of bacterial load of 3 log of bacteria/mL and 10,6% of culture positive. The microorganisms isolated from endoscope flush after reprocessing were Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus hominis, Staphylococcus capitis, Roseomonas gilardii and Micrococcus luteus. Endoscope biopsy channel analysis showed that samples from Brazil had higher contamination level than the ones from Australia (p<0,001). All channels analyzed presented biofilm and damage on their surfaces, however Brazilian samples showed particularities, like, blood cells, neutrophils and fungus. So, ever with low microbial load on endoscopes there is a potential risk of crossinfection associated with biofilm, compromising reprocessing quality and safety. Additionally, there´s the need of scientific and technologic improvement on endoscope reprocessing against biofilm

ABSTRACT

A limpeza e desinfecção das superfícies operatórias fixas e partes expostas do equipo odontológico reduzem, significativamente, a contaminação. Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar se há contaminação da mesa cirúrgica, ao se utilizar o TNT esterilizado nas gramaturas 20 g/m² e 40 g/m². Materiais e Métodos: O trabalho constituiu-se de 2 grupos, compostos por 30 amostras (campos cirúrgicos) para cada grupo. Após a desinfecção prévia das mesas cirúrgicas, foram colocados campos de TNT. No grupo 1, foi utilizado TNT gramatura 20, e no grupo 2, gramatura 40. A coleta das amostras dos dois grupos foi realizada logo após a colocação dos campos cirúrgicos (tempo 1) e 1 hora após (tempo 2). Resultados: Em relação à ocorrência de contaminação bacteriana, não houve diferença estatisticamente significativas entre tempo de coletas. Mesmo com os cuidados de desinfecção da mesa e paramentação adequada, esses campos não foram totalmente eficazes. Conclusão: A amostra do TNT gramatura 40, tanto no início da cirurgia quanto 1 hora após, obteve melhores resultados, comparando-se com o TNT gramatura 20 sem diferenças estatísticas... (AU)


The cleaning and disinfecting fixed operative surfaces and exposed parts of the dental unit significantly reduces contamination. This study aimed to assess whether there is contamination of the surgical table to use the TNT sterilized in the weights 20 g/m² and 40 g/m². Materials and Methods: The study consisted of two groups, composed of 30 samples (drapes) for each group. After prior disinfection of surgical tables were placed TNT fields. Group 1 was used TNT weight and 20 in group 2 weight 40. The sample collection from both groups was held soon after the placement of surgical fields (time 1) and 1 hour after (time 2). Results: Regarding the occurrence of bacterial contamination, there was no statistically significant difference between time of collection. Even with the disinfecting care of the table and adequate scrub, these fields have not been fully effective. Conclusion: Thus, the sample weight of the TNT 40, both at the beginning of surgery, as 1 hour, better results compared to the TNT weight 20 without statistical differences... (AU)

ABSTRACT

The air we breathe contains microscopic biological particles such as viruses, bacteria, fungi and pollen, some of them with relevant clinic importance. These organisms and/or their propagules have been traditionally studied by different disciplines and diverse methodologies like culture and microscopy. These techniques require time, expertise and also have some important biases. As a consequence, our knowledge on the total diversity and the relationships between the different biological entities present in the air is far from being complete. Currently, metagenomics and next-generation sequencing (NGS) may resolve this shortage of information and have been recently applied to metropolitan areas. Although the procedures and methods are not totally standardized yet, the first studies from urban air samples confirm the previous results obtained by culture and microscopy regarding abundance and variation of these biological particles. However, DNA-sequence analyses call into question some preceding ideas and also provide new interesting insights into diversity and their spatial distribution inside the cities. Here, we review the procedures, results and perspectives of the recent works that apply NGS to study the main biological particles present in the air of urban environments (AU)
