ABSTRACT

Populations of freshwater species have been declining rapidly and species are becoming extinct. Thus, understanding freshwater species distribution, trends and patterns is required. The Munim River basin is situated in a region with a phytogeographic interface between the Amazon and Cerrado biomes. Although the Munim basin ichthyofauna is currently relatively well-known, data on its helminth fauna is scarce. The present study aimed to characterize the nematofauna of Bryconops cf. affinis (Günther) and Saxatilia brasiliensis (Bloch) from two different localities in the middle section of the Munim River, and thus to contribute to the knowledge of biodiversity in this region. Specimens of Bryconops cf. affinis were parasitized with the nematodes Procamallanus (Spirocamallanus) krameri (Petter, 1974) and "Porrocaecum-like" species (larvae) in both localities. Saxatilia brasiliensis presented the nematodes P. (S.) krameri, Pseudoproleptus sp. (larvae), Cucullanus sp. and Procamallanus sp. (larvae). Procamallanus (S.) krameri was found parasitizing S. brasiliensis only from the Feio stream. Morphometric data and parasitological parameters are given. The present study provides the first record of nematodes for B. cf. affinis and for S. brasiliensis contributing to the knowledge of the helminth fauna of freshwater fishes from locations that have not yet been studied, such as the Munim River basin.

ABSTRACT

African cichlids are model systems for evolutionary studies and host-parasite interactions, because of their adaptive radiations and because they harbour many species of monogenean parasites with high host-specificity. Five locations were sampled in southern Lake Victoria: gill-infecting monogeneans were surveyed from 18 cichlid species belonging to this radiation superflock and two others representing two older and distantly related lineages. We found one species of Gyrodactylidae, Gyrodactylus sturmbaueri Vanhove, Snoeks, Volckaert & Huyse, 2011, and seven species of Dactylogyridae. Four are described herein: Cichlidogyrus pseudodossoui n. sp., Cichlidogyrus nyanza n. sp., Cichlidogyrus furu n. sp., and Cichlidogyrus vetusmolendarius n. sp. Another Cichlidogyrus species is reported but not formally described (low number of specimens, morphological similarity with C. furu n. sp.). Two other species are redescribed: C. bifurcatus Paperna, 1960 and C. longipenis Paperna & Thurston, 1969. Our results confirm that the monogenean fauna of Victorian littoral cichlids displays lower species richness and lower host-specificity than that of Lake Tanganyika littoral cichlids. In C. furu n. sp., hooks V are clearly longer than the others, highlighting the need to re-evaluate the current classification system that considers hook pairs III-VII as rather uniform. Some morphological features of C. bifurcatus, C. longipenis, and C. nyanza n. sp. suggest that these are closely related to congeners that infect other haplochromines. Morphological traits indicate that representatives of Cichlidogyrus colonised Lake Victoria haplochromines or their ancestors at least twice, which is in line with the Lake Victoria superflock being colonised by two cichlid tribes (Haplochromini and Oreochromini).


Title: Quatre espèces nouvelles de Cichlidogyrus (Plathelminthes, Monopisthocotyla, Dactylogyridae) parasites d'haplochrominés (Cichlidae) du lac Victoria, avec la redescription de C. bifurcatus et C. longipenis. Abstract: Les cichlidés africains sont des systèmes modèles pour les études évolutives et les interactions hôtes-parasites, en raison de leurs radiations adaptatives et parce qu'ils hébergent de nombreuses espèces de monogènes parasites avec une spécificité d'hôte étroite. Cinq sites ont été échantillonnés dans le sud du lac Victoria, les monogènes infectant les branchies ont été étudiés chez 18 espèces de cichlidés appartenant à ce superflock et de deux autres espèces représentant deux lignées plus anciennes et éloignées. Nous avons trouvé une espèce de Gyrodactylidae, Gyrodactylus sturmbaueri Vanhove, Snoeks, Volckaert & Huyse, 2011, et sept espèces de Dactylogyridae. Quatre sont décrites ici : Cichlidogyrus pseudodossoui n. sp., Cichlidogyrus nyanza n. sp., Cichlidogyrus furu n. sp. et Cichlidogyrus vetusmolendarius n. sp. Une autre espèce de Cichlidogyrus est signalée mais non formellement décrite (faible nombre de spécimens, similarité morphologique avec C. furu n. sp.). Deux autres espèces sont redécrites : C. bifurcatus Paperna, 1960 et C. longipenis Paperna & Thurston, 1969. Nos résultats confirment que la faune des monogènes des cichlidés du littoral du lac Victoria présente une richesse en espèces et une spécificité d'hôte inférieures à celles des cichlidés du littoral du lac Tanganyika. Chez C. furu n. sp., les crochets V sont clairement plus longs que les autres, ce qui souligne la nécessité de réévaluer le système de classification actuel qui considère que les crochets III-VII sont plutôt uniformes. Certaines caractéristiques morphologiques de C. bifurcatus, C. longipenis et C. nyanza n. sp. suggèrent que ceux-ci sont étroitement liés aux congénères qui infectent les autres haplochrominés. Les traits morphologiques indiquent que les représentants de Cichlidogyrus ont colonisé les haplochrominés du lac Victoria ou leurs ancêtres au moins deux fois, ce qui concorde avec le fait que le superflock du lac Victoria a été colonisé par deux tribus de cichlidés (Haplochromini et Oreochromini).

ABSTRACT

Heterophyiasis is a highly endemic disease in the Nile Delta, Egypt, where people consume raw or undercooked Oreochromis niloticus and Mugil cephalus. Birds and rats play a crucial role in fish-borne zoonotic trematode transmission since they serve as natural and experimental hosts. This study aimed to update the epidemiological information, morphological description, molecular identification and gene expression of two distinct heterophyid metacercariae in Giza, Wadi Al-Rayan, and Lake Manzala, Egypt, whereas various heterophyid infections could be expected. The present Centrocestus formosanus, Heterophyes heterophyes, and Heterophyes nocens with accession numbers OR947651.1, OR947700.1, and OR947719.1, respectively, matched with those recorded in the GenBank. Findings of the current investigation indicated that various cytokines like IL-1ß, MHC-II, and TNF-α rapidly elevated in the infected pigeon's intestines. Additionally, the infection expanded due to the parasite's ejection from the host and the host's clinical affliction, which induced humoral immune responses. Interestingly, investigation of other trematode species is in extreme demand in terms of zoonoses. We suggest controlling snails, managing migratory birds, and examining and frying fishes to the point when the encysted metacercariae is destroyed.

INTRODUCTION: The present study describes three new dactylogyrid species infecting the gill filaments of cichlid fishes (Cichliformes: Cichlidae) from the Amazon basin, Peru: Sciadicleithrum amazoniensis n. sp. on Biotodoma cupido (Heckel, 1840), and Sciadicleithrum feliciajaramae n. sp. and Sciadicleithrum souzatecci n. sp. on Bujurquina peregrinabunda Kullander, 1986. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Some monogeneans were stained with Gomori's trichrome and mounted in Canada Balsam to determine internal soft structures. Others were cleared in Hoyer's medium for the study of sclerotized structures. Drawings were made using a drawing tube and a microprojector. RESULTS: Sciadicleithrum amazoniensis n. sp. is characterized by the presence of a male copulatory organ (MCO) with a coil of approximately 2 counterclockwise rings, an accessory piece articulated to base of the MCO with an expanded proximal end and a bifurcated distal end, and a sinistral vaginal aperture. Sciadicleithrum feliciajaramae n. sp. can be differentiated from all its congeners by its J-shaped MCO with about half a counterclockwise loop and a rod-shaped accessory piece articulated to the base of the MCO, with the distal end bent. Sciadicleithrum souzatecci n. sp. differs from all other members of Sciadicleithrum by having an elongated MCO with about a clockwise loop and a funnel-shaped base. Additionally, Sciadicleithrum souzatecci n. sp. is characterized by its weakly sclerotized, C-shaped accessory piece with a robust middle process. CONCLUSIONS: Present findings are added to the other 26 species previously known in Sciadicleithrum.This is the first data on the parasites of B. peregrinabunda.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Gills monogenean infestation causes significant mortalities in cultured fishes as a result of respiratory manifestation. Medicinal plants are currently being heavily emphasized in aquaculture due to their great nutritional, therapeutic, antimicrobial activities, and financial value. METHODS: The current study is designed to assess the effect of garlic (Allium sativum) and onion (Allium cepa) extracts as a water treatment on the hematological profile, innate immunity, and immune cytokines expression besides histopathological features of gills of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus L.) infected with gills monogenetic trematodes (Dactylogyrus sp.). Firstly, the 96-hour lethal concentration 50 (96 h-LC50) of garlic extract (GE) and onion extract (OE) were estimated to be 0.4 g/ L and 3.54 g/ L for GE and OE, respectively. Moreover, the in-vitro anti-parasitic potential for (GE) was found between 0.02 and 0.18 mg/mL and 0.4 to 1.8 mg/mL for OE. For the therapeutic trial, fish (n = 120; body weight: 40-60 g) were randomly distributed into four groups in triplicates (30 fish/group, 10 fish/replicate) for 3 days. Group1 (G1) was not infected or treated and served as control. G2 was infected with Dactylogyrus spp. and not exposed to any treatment. G3, G4 were infected with Dactylogyrus sp. and treated with 1/10 and 1/5 of 96 h LC50 of OE, respectively. G5, G6 were infected with Dactylogyrus sp. and treated with 1/10 and 1/5 of 96 h LC50 of GE, respectively. RESULTS: No apparent signs or behaviors were noted in the control group. Dactylogyrus spp. infected group suffered from clinical signs as Pale color and damaged tissue. Dactylogyrus spp. infection induced lowering of the hematological (HB, MCH, MCHC and WBCs), and immunological variables (lysozyme, nitric oxide, serum Anti- protease activities, and complement 3). the expression of cytokine genes IL-ß and TNF-α were modulated and improved by treatment with A. sativum and A. cepa extracts. The obtained histopathological alterations of the gills of fish infected with (Dactylogyrus spp.) were hyperplasia leading to fusion of the gill filament, lifting of epithelial tissue, aneurism and edema. The results indecated that G4 and G5 is more regenarated epithelium in compare with the control group. CONCLUSION: A. sativum and A. cepa extracts enhance the blood profile and nonspecific immune parameters, and down-regulated the expression level of (IL-1ß and TNF-α).

ABSTRACT

Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) is valued in aquaculture because of its quick development and ability to thrive in various environments. Myxosporeans are among the fish parasites that affect fish productivity, as they impact fish growth and reproduction, resulting in large fish deaths in farms and hatcheries. This study has been focused on morpho-molecular identification for the myxosporean parasites infecting Nile tilapia from three governorates in Egypt and assessment of gene expression of different cytokines (Interleukin-1ßeta (IL-1ß), major histocompatibility complex class II (MHC-II), and clusters of differentiation 4 (CD-4) and 8 (CD-8)) in tissues. Additionally, this work aimed to correlate the developed histopathological alterations and inflammatory reactions in gills with immunohistochemical expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α). Finally, the infected fish's cortisol levels and blood glucose were assessed. Results of BLAST sequence analysis of the 18S rRNA for the collected protozoans confirmed Myxobolus agolus, M. brachysporus, M. tilapiae, and Henneguya species. The molecular characterization of the immunological status of gills revealed marked upregulation of different inflammatory cytokines in the gills of infected fish. There was a significantly increased serum cortisol and glucose level in infected fish compared with control, non-infected ones. Severe histopathological alterations were observed in the infected fish gills, associated with increased expression of iNOS and TNF-α and related to myxosporean infection. The present study provides new insights into oxidative stress biomarkers in Nile tilapia infected with Myxosporeans and elucidates the gill's immune status changes as a portal of entry for protozoa that contribute to tissue damage.

ABSTRACT

In the present study, we examined 30 individuals of introduced African cichlids, Oreochromis niloticus and Coptodon rendalli, collected in a river spring of the Pardo River, Paranapanema River basin, southeastern Brazil. Based on morphological and molecular analyses of the partial LSU rDNA gene, we identified four species of monogeneans, Cichlidogyrus tilapiae, C. thurstonae, C. mbirizei, and Scutogyrus longicornis on the gills of O. niloticus, whereas individuals of C. rendalli were infested only with C. papernastrema. This is the first record of C. mbirizei and C. papernastrema in tilapias from Brazil. The ecological consequences of the introduction of exotic species of tilapia such as O. niloticus and C. rendalli along with their monogenean parasites in a wild environment represented by a river spring are discussed. Our new molecular data on Cichlidogyrus and Scutogyrus contribute to the investigation of the phylogenetic interrelationships of these widely distributed genera of monogeneans since their species composition is still unsettled.


Title: Parasites (Monogenea) des tilapias Oreochromis niloticus et Coptodon rendalli (Cichlidae) dans une source au Brésil. Abstract: Dans la présente étude, nous avons examiné 30 individus de cichlidés africains introduits, Oreochromis niloticus et Coptodon rendalli, collectés dans une source fluviale du fleuve Pardo, bassin du fleuve Paranapanema, dans le sud-est du Brésil. Sur la base d'analyses morphologiques et moléculaires du gène partiel de l'ADNr LSU, nous avons identifié quatre espèces de monogènes, Cichlidogyrus tilapiae, C. thurstonae, C. mbirizei et Scutogyrus longicornis sur les branchies d'O. niloticus, alors que les individus de C. rendalli étaient infestés uniquement par C. papernastrema. Il s'agit du premier signalement de C. mbirizei et C. papernastrema chez des tilapias du Brésil. Les conséquences écologiques de l'introduction d'espèces exotiques de tilapia telles que O. niloticus et C. rendalli ainsi que leurs monogènes parasites dans un environnement sauvage représenté par une source fluviale sont discutées. Nos nouvelles données moléculaires sur Cichlidogyrus et Scutogyrus contribuent à l'étude des interrelations phylogénétiques de ces genres de monogènes largement distribués puisque leur composition spécifique est encore incertaine.

ABSTRACT

Improperly cooked fish, carrying active metacercariae (MCs), can pose a significant risk for transmitting fish-borne zoonotic trematodes (FBZTs) to human consumers. This study aimed to enhance our understanding of FBZTs by conducting a comprehensive cross-sectional analysis involving various fish species, such as Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), African catfish (Clarias gariepinus), and red-belly tilapia (Tilapia zillii). These fish specimens were collected from distinct Egyptian governorates, specifically Giza, Kafr al-Shaykh, and Fayoum. The recovered flukes from experimentally infected domestic pigeons were identified as Prohemistomum vivax, Haplorchis pumilio, and Pygidiopsis genata based on morphological features. Furthermore, the identity of the retrieved adult flukes was confirmed using three species-specific primers for PCR amplification and sequencing analysis of the ITS rDNA region and have been deposited in GenBank with the following accession numbers: P. vivax (OR291421.1 and OR291422.1), P. genata (OP099561.1), and H. pumilio (OM439581.1-OP090510.1). Quantitative real-time PCR targeting the immunological genes Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) and Interleukin-1 (IL-1Β) was employed to compare the cellular immune response between infected with EMCs and uninfected O. niloticus. The results indicated a significant increase in TNF- and IL-1Β levels in FBZTs-infected vs un-infected fishes. Importantly, the presence of adult flukes and EMCs led to substantial histological alterations in both experimentally infected pigeons and naturally infected fish tissues. These changes included the necrosis of fish muscle bundles and a pronounced inflammatory reaction with muscular necrosis in the digestive tracts of experimentally infected pigeons.

ABSTRACT

This study describes recent infestations of ectoparasites on tilapia fingerlings in several hatcheries. High mortality of fingerlings and juvenile fish often occurs in hatcheries but the causative agents remain unclear. Nile tilapia fingerlings were obtained from three hatcheries in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The fish were euthanized in clove oil, length and weight were measured, and the whole body and gills were examined for ectoparasites. Trichodinids were silver stained with 2% AgNO3, whereas monogeneans were placed in glycerin-alcohol and examined under a microscope. Other protozoans were placed directly on fresh mounts and identified under a compound microscope. The monogenean parasites were cleaned and placed in a microtube containing 70% alcohol for molecular identification. Trichodinid (Trichodina centrostrigeata, T. magna, Paratrichodina africana, Trichodinella sp., and Tripartiella sp.), and monogenean (Gyrodactylus sp. and Cichlidogyrus spp.) parasites were found in highly prevalent. The Cichlidogyrus specimens were morphologically identified as C. sclerosus, C. halli, and C. thurston, but only C. sclerosus and C. halli were confirmed based on partial 28S rRNA. The Gyrodactylus specimens were morphologically identified as G. cichlidarum and confirmed based on the ITS region. This is the first time that T. centrostrigeata and P. africana have been confirmed on fish from hatcheries and is also the first time that C. sclerosus, C. halli, and G. cichlidarum have been verified in Indonesian hatcheries based on a molecular technique. The high infestation rates of these parasites were likely caused by rearing the fish under stressful conditions, indicating low biosecurity and poor health management practices in the aquaculture facilities.

ABSTRACT

Invasive Nile tilapias negatively impact native tilapia species through hybridisation and competition. However, the co-introduction of parasites with Nile tilapia, and subsequent changes in parasite communities, are scarcely documented. Monogeneans are known pathogens of cultured Nile tilapia, although little is known about their fate once Nile tilapias establish in new ecosystems. We investigate the parasitological consequences of Nile tilapia introduction on native tilapias in basins in Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), and Zimbabwe, focusing on ectoparasitic dactylogyrids (Monogenea). Using the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase c subunit I (COI) and nuclear 18S-internal transcribed spacer 1 (18S-ITS1) rDNA region of 128 and 166 worms, respectively, we evaluated transmission of several dactylogyrid species. Parasite spillover from Nile tilapia was detected for Cichlidogyrus tilapiae to Coptodon guineensis in Cameroon, Cichlidogyrus thurstonae to Oreochromis macrochir in the DRC, and Cichlidogyrus halli and C. tilapiae to Coptodon rendalli in Zimbabwe. Parasite spillback to Nile tilapia was detected for Cichlidogyrus papernastrema and Scutogyrus gravivaginus from Tilapia sparrmanii and Cichlidogyrus dossoui from C. rendalli or T. sparrmanii in the DRC, and Cichlidogyrus chloeae from Oreochromis cf. mortimeri and S. gravivaginus from O. macrochir in Zimbabwe. 'Hidden' transmissions (i.e. transmission of certain parasite lineages of species that are naturally present on both alien and native hosts) were detected for C. tilapiae and Scutogyrus longicornis between Nile tilapia and Oreochromis aureus and C. tilapiae between Nile tilapia and Oreochromis mweruensis in the DRC, and Cichlidogyrus sclerosus and C. tilapiae between Nile tilapia and O. cf. mortimeri in Zimbabwe. A high density of Nile tilapia occurring together with native tilapias, and the broad host range and/or environmental tolerance of the transmitted parasites, are proposed as factors behind parasite transmission through ecological fitting. However, continuous monitoring and the inclusion of environmental variables are necessary to understand the long-term consequences of these transmissions on native tilapias and to elucidate other underlying factors influencing these transmissions.

ABSTRACT

Owing to the largely unexplored diversity of metazoan parasites, their speciation mechanisms and the circumstances under which such speciation occurs - in allopatry or sympatry - remain vastly understudied. Cichlids and their monogenean flatworm parasites have previously served as a study system for macroevolutionary processes, e.g., for the role of East African host radiations on parasite communities. Here, we investigate the diversity and evolution of the poorly explored monogeneans infecting a West and Central African lineage of cichlid fishes: Chromidotilapiini, which is the most species-rich tribe of cichlids in this region. We screened gills of 149 host specimens (27 species) from natural history collections and measured systematically informative characters of the sclerotised attachment and reproductive organs of the parasites. Ten monogenean species (Dactylogyridae: Cichlidogyrus and Onchobdella) were found, eight of which are newly described and one redescribed herein. The phylogenetic positions of chromidotilapiines-infecting species of Cichlidogyrus were inferred through a parsimony analysis of the morphological characters. Furthermore, we employed machine learning algorithms to detect morphological features associated with the main lineages of Cichlidogyrus. Although the results of these experimental algorithms remain inconclusive, the parsimony analysis indicates that West and Central African lineages of Cichlidogyrus and Onchobdella are monophyletic, unlike the paraphyletic host lineages. Several instances of host sharing suggest occurrences of intra-host speciation (sympatry) and host switching (allopatry). Some morphological variation was recorded that may also indicate the presence of species complexes. We conclude that collection material can provide important insights on parasite evolution despite the lack of well-preserved DNA material.

Abstract: En raison de la nature largement inexplorée de la diversité des parasites métazoaires, leurs mécanismes de spéciation et les circonstances dans lesquelles cette spéciation se produit­allopatrie ou sympatrie­restent très peu étudiés. Les cichlidés et leurs parasites Plathelminthes monogènes ont déjà servi de modèle pour l'étude des processus macro-évolutifs, par exemple pour le rôle des radiations d'hôtes de l'Afrique de l'Est sur les communautés de parasites. Ici, nous étudions la diversité et l'évolution des monogènes peu étudiées qui infestent une lignée de poissons cichlidés d'Afrique occidentale et centrale : les Chromidotilapiini, qui est la tribu de cichlidés la plus riche en espèces dans cette région. Nous avons examiné les branchies de 149 spécimens hôtes (27 espèces) provenant de musées d'histoire naturelle et mesuré systématiquement les caractères informatifs des pièces sclérifiées du hapteur et des organes copulateurs des parasites. Dix espèces de monogènes (Dactylogyridae : Cichlidogyrus et Onchobdella) ont été trouvées ; huit sont nouvelles pour la science et une est redécrite. Les positions phylogénétiques des espèces de Cichlidogyrus infectant les chromidotilapiines ont été déduites par une analyse de parcimonie des caractères morphologiques. En outre, nous avons utilisé des algorithmes d'apprentissage automatique pour détecter les caractéristiques morphologiques associées aux principales lignées de Cichlidogyrus. Bien que les résultats de ces algorithmes expérimentaux restent peu concluants, l'analyse de parcimonie indique que les lignées de Cichlidogyrus et d'Onchobdella de l'Afrique de l'Ouest et Central sont monophylétiques, contrairement aux lignées d'hôtes qui sont paraphylétiques. Plusieurs cas de partage d'hôtes suggèrent des occurrences de spéciation synxénique (sympatrie) et de changement d'hôte (allopatrie). Certaines variations morphologiques ont été enregistrées et peuvent également indiquer la présence de complexes d'espèces. Nous concluons donc que le matériel de collection peut fournir des informations importantes sur l'évolution des parasites malgré le manque d'ADN exploitable.

Ergasilus (von Nordmann, 1832) (Ergasilidae) is a species-rich group of parasitic copepods with a wide distribution in freshwater, marine and brackish environments. Up to now, 9 species of Ergasilus are known from cichlid fishes in Africa. In this study, 5 species, including 3 new, were collected from the gills of 12 cichlid species (11 genera: Bathybates, Ctenochromis, Eretmodus, Gnathochromis, Lamprologus, Neolamprologus, Ophthalmotilapia, Perissodus, Simochromis, Spathodus and Tanganicodus) of the northeastern shore of Lake Tanganyika in Burundi, namely E. macrodactylus (Sars, 1909), E. megacheir (Sars, 1909), E. caparti n. sp., E. parasarsi n. sp. and E. parvus n. sp. All species found were identified and described on the basis of adult female specimens using an integrative taxonomy approach mixing morphological characterization and molecular analyses of 2 ribosomal DNA markers (partial 18S and 28S rDNA sequences). An identification key for Ergasilus species from Lake Tanganyika is included. This study provides the first molecular data for Ergasilus species in Africa. The phylogenetic analyses suggest that the Ergasilus species parasitizing Lake Tanganyikan cichlids form a well-supported clade within the Ergasilidae. However, their phylogenetic relationships with other congeners still remain unclear due to a lack of molecular data for this diverse genus.

BACKGROUND: Monogenean parasites have never been formally reported on fishes from the Lufira River Basin. In this context, we decided to record the monogenean parasite fauna of three cichlid species found in the Upper Lufira River Basin for the first time by inventorizing their diversity (species composition) and analysing their infection parameters (prevalence, mean intensity and abundance). METHODS: The African cichlid fishes Oreochromis mweruensis, Coptodon rendalli and Serranochromis macrocephalus were selected for the study, given their economic value and their abundance in the Upper Lufira River Basin. Monogeneans were isolated from the gills and stomach, mounted on glass slides with either Hoyer's medium or ammonium picrate-glycerin for identification under a stereomicroscope, based on morphological analysis of genital and haptoral hard parts. Indices of diversity and infections parameters were calculated. RESULTS: A total of 13 gill monogenean parasite species (Cichlidogyrus dossoui, C. halli, C. karibae, C. mbirizei, C. papernastrema, C. quaestio, C. sclerosus, C. tiberianus, C. tilapiae, C. zambezensis, Scutogyrus gravivaginus, S. cf. bailloni and Gyrodactylus nyanzae) and one stomach monogenean (Enterogyrus malmbergi) were identified. A species richness (S) of 10 for O. mweruensis, S = 6 for C. rendalli and S = 2 for S. macrocephalus was recorded. Five parasite species were reported to be common amongst O. mweruensis and C. rendalli. According to cichlid species, the most prevalent parasite species was C. halli (prevalence [P] = 80.9%) on O. mweruensis, C. dossoui (P = 92.9%) on C. rendalli and C. karibae and C. zambezensis (both P = 9.1%) on S. macrocephalus. The parasite species with the highest mean intensity (MI) were G. nyanzae (MI = 8.7) on O. mweruensis, C. papernastrema (MI = 17.1) on C. rendalli and C. karibae (MI = 15) on S. macrocephalus. The findings indicate new host ranges for five parasites species (C. quaestio, S. cf. bailloni, E. malmbergi on O. mweruensis, C. halli on C. rendalli and C. karibae on S. macrocephalus) as well as new geographical records for all of them as they are recorded for the first time in the Lufira River Basin. CONCLUSIONS: This study highlighted the richness of monogenean communities in the Upper Lufira River Basin and is a starting point for future helminthological studies, such as on the use of fish parasites as indicators of anthropogenic impacts.

Sebkha Imlili (Atlantic Sahara) is a salt flat with over 160 permanent holes of hypersaline water generated in the Holocene and inhabited by euryhaline organisms that are considered to be relics of the past, including the cichlid fish Coptodon guineensis. We surveyed the fish parasites four times over one year, to i) identify the parasites, and ii) determine possible seasonality in infection patterns. Over 60% of the fish were infected by one to three helminths: an acanthocephalan in the intestine and two digenean metacercariae in the kidney, spleen, liver, muscle, and mesenteries. The acanthocephalan Acanthogyrus (Acanthosentis) cf. tilapiae was identified morphologically and molecularly; only one digenean (the heterophyid Pygidiopsis genata) could be identified molecularly. Both identified parasites were present throughout the sampling periods; the unidentified metacercariae were present only in summer and fall. Mean intensities, but not prevalence of infection by the acanthocephalan, reflected a biannual pattern of transmission. Infection accrued with fish size, possibly due to cannibalism. Because the water holes include only a few invertebrates, the intermediate hosts of these parasites can be inferred to be the gastropod Ecrobia ventrosa for the digeneans and either the copepod Cletocamtpus retrogressus or the ostracod Cyprideis torosa for the acanthocephalan. This ecosystem appears stable and provides a window into the past, as the acanthocephalan likely switched from freshwater tilapia to C. guineensis when the Sebkha formed. However, this is a vulnerable environment where the survival of these parasites depends on interactions maintained among only very few hosts.


Title: Parasites de Coptodon guineensis (Pisces, Cichlidae) du désert marocain : transition et résilience dans un écosystème hypersalin simplifié. Abstract: La Sebkha d'Imlili est une sebkha (étendue désertique sableuse et salée) dans le Sahara Atlantique caractérisée par la présence de plus de 160 poches permanentes d'eau hypersaline qui sont apparues à l'Holocène et qui sont habitées par des organismes considérés comme des reliques du passé, dont un poisson cichlidé, Coptodon guineensis. Nous avons fait l'inventaire des parasites de ce poisson au cours des quatre saisons d'une année pour 1) identifier les parasites et 2) déterminer une éventuelle transmission saisonnière. Plus de 60 % des poissons étaient infestés par un à trois helminthes : un Acanthocéphale dans l'intestin et des métacercaires de deux espèces de Digène dans le rein, la rate, les muscles et le mésentère. L'Acanthocéphale Acanthogyrus (Acanthosentis) cf. tilapiae a été identifié morphologiquement et génétiquement mais seul un des deux Digènes (l'hétérophyidé Pygidiopsis genata) a pu être identifié par séquençage. Ces deux parasites étaient présents à chaque période d'étude, mais la métacercaire non identifiée était présente seulement en été et en automne. L'intensité moyenne de l'infestation par l'Acanthocéphale, mais pas sa prévalence, reflète une transmission biannuelle. L'infestation augmente avec la taille du poisson, peut-être à cause du cannibalisme. L'identité des hôtes intermédiaires de ces parasites peut être avancée parce que cet écosystème est simplifié et inclut seulement quelques invertébrés : pour les Digènes, le Gastéropode Ecrobia ventrosa, et pour l'Acanthocéphale, le Copépode Cletocamtpus retrogressus ou l'Ostracode Cyprideis torosa. Cet écosystème apparait stable et offre une vue sur le passé étant donné que l'Acanthocéphale a sans doute été transféré d'un tilapia d'eau douce quand la sebkha s'est formée. Cependant, c'est un environnement vulnérable où la survie de ces parasites dépend d'interactions entre très peu d'espèces hôtes.

Trichodina centrostrigeata Basson, Van As et Paperna, 1983 from Oreochromis mossambicus (Peters) and O. niloticus (Linnaeus) from different host populations from Argentina, Mexico and South Africa was reviewed. Although T. centrostrigeata has a distinct denticle structure that makes morphological taxonomic inferences uncomplicated, variation of the denticles within and among individuals and populations were still observed. While traditional taxonomy of mobilines is heavily reliant on morphometrics, and recently even more so on molecular analysis, this paper proposes the use of geometric morphometry, specifically elliptical Fourier analysis, to address morphological conflicts that arise when comparing different populations. By applying this technique, combined with traditional taxonomy, it was found that T. centrostrigeata in this study can be grouped into two separate morphotypes, the first (type a) from aquaculture farms in Argentina and Mexico and the second (type b) from a natural habitat in Glen Alpine Dam, South Africa. This study supports the validity of geometric morphometry as an additional technique to distinguish not only between species but also evolutionary plasticity of the same species from different localities and habitats.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Henneguya Thélohan, 1892 is one of the most species-rich genera of myxosporean parasites and infects fish around the world. The present study describes a new species infecting the gill filaments, fins, and kidneys of Plagioscion squamosissimus (Heckel, 1840), an economically important freshwater fish distributed in watersheds in the north of South America. METHODS: A total of 108 P. squamosissimus specimens were examined from three geographic localities in the Amazon basin: the Lago Grande do Curuai, a marginal lake of the Amazon River; the Tapajós River, in the state of Pará; and the Solimões River, in the state of Amazonas, Brazil. The analyses were based on the myxospore morphology, ribosomal DNA sequencing, phylogeny, prevalence, and geographic distribution of the host and its parasite. RESULTS: Parasite prevalences were 50% in both the Tapajós and Solimões rivers, and 35.4% in the Lago Grande do Curuai. In terms of the site of infection, the prevalence total was 23.1% in the gill filament, 29.6% in the fins, and 1.8% in the kidney. Regarding gender, the prevalence was 59.5% for males, 32.5% for females, and 21.7% for undetermined sex. The specimens found here were both morphologically and molecularly identical regardless of the infected organ and geographic locality, but distinct from all other Henneguya species, revealing that the parasite reported represents a novel species named Henneguya longisporoplasma n. sp. Despite the sampling being carried out in three different geographic localities of the Amazon basin, no population-level genetic variation was observed, even in the typically more variable ITS-1 region, revealing a panmictic population of H. longisporoplasma n. sp. in this large watershed. Maximum likelihood and Bayesian analyses showed the novel Henneguya clustered as a sister branch of the subclade formed of Henneguya that infect fish belonging to the family Cichlidae. CONCLUSIONS: A novel Henneguya species was identified parasitizing P. squamosissimus. The parasite presented wide geographic distribution in the Amazon basin and genetic analyses showed it as revealing a panmictic population.

Nile tilapia is the most commercially important fish in Chiapas as well as in other parts of the world. An understanding of parasite infection dynamics in tilapia may assist in applying proper prophylactic measures for reducing the loss of fish caused by parasitic diseases. Different environments and culture systems may imply different infection dynamics; therefore, the present study identified and compared the infection parameters (prevalence, mean abundance, and intensity) of parasites of Oreochromis niloticus cultured in floating cages and ponds. A total of 18 metazoan parasite taxa were recovered from gills, skin, fins and intestines of 310 specimens from floating cages and ponds. Fourteen species of parasites were found in floating cages: 8 monogenean species, 1 nematode, 1 digenea, 1 crustacea, 3 protozoans. In ponds, 16 parasite taxa were reported: 11 were monogeneans species, 4 protozoans and 1 crustacean. In both systems, monogeneans (Cichlidogyrus sclerosus, C. tilapiae, Gyrodactylus cichlidarum) and protozoans (Trichodina compacta) were most prevalent. Tilapia in ponds sustained higher parasitic infections than those in floating cages (p < 0.05). The Canonical Correspondence Analysis showed two groups: the first grouped the ponds, associated with high values of nitrite, nitrate, ammonia, conductivity, temperature, and the abundance of the ectoparasites C. halli, C. dossoui, Scutogyrus longicornis, C. sclerosus and T. compacta. The second group grouped the cages, associated with Clinostomum marginatum, Apiosoma piscicola, Lernea sp., and Contracaecum sp. and a high dissolved oxygen concentration. Our findings suggest that monitoring programs are required to improve the sanitary conditions of tilapia cultures in Chiapas.

ABSTRACT

Host-parasite coevolution is one of the main topics of the evolutionary biology of host-parasite associations. The majority of monogeneans parasitizing fish exhibit a high degree of host specificity. As a result, their evolutionary history might be intertwined with that of their fish hosts. The Cichlidae represent a diverse group of secondary freshwater fish with disjunctive distribution. Host-specific dactylogyrid monogeneans commonly parasitize cichlid fish. Their high diversity is associated with the main areas of cichlid distribution, i.e., Neotropical America and Africa. Nevertheless, the parasite fauna of cichlids from Neotropical America is still underexplored. A total of 31 cichlid species were examined for the presence of monogeneans, with 20 of them being parasitized. On these cichlids, 30 monogeneans belonging to the genera Gussevia, Trinidactylus, and Scadicleithrum were identified, 17 of them potentially representing new species for science. Phylogenetic analyses revealed three monophyletic groups of Neotropic cichlid monogeneans. Genus Gussevia was monophyletic, while Sciadicleithrum resulted polyphyletic. Sciedicleithrum from South America and Sciadicleithrum from Mexico represented two divergent lineages. The plesiomorphic Neotropical cichlid host group for dactylogyrid monogeneans was Cichlini, from which the representatives of other Neotropical cichlid tribes were colonised. Cophylogenetic analyses revealed a statistically significant cophylogenetic signal in the investigated host-parasite system, with host switch and duplication representing the main coevolutionary events for monogeneans parasitizing Neotropical cichlids. This scenario is in accordance with previous studies focussed on dactylogyridean monogeneans parasitizing freshwater fish in Europe and Africa.

Our aim was to assess endoparasite diversity and liver alterations in Hoplerythrinus unitaeniatus (jeju) and Cichlasoma bimaculatum (acará preto) in a quilombola area in Maranhão, Brazil. For this, 21 H. unitaeniatus and 21 C. bimaculatum were caught in a natural environment and transported to a laboratory. After these had been euthanized, endoparasites were collected and identified. Liver alterations were evaluated histological analysis based on the severity of each lesion: stage I, organ functioning not compromised; stage II, more severe lesions that impair normal functioning of the organs; and stage III, very severe and irreversible lesions. Among the fish evaluated, 71.43% H. unitaeniatus and 61.90% C. bimaculatum were parasitized. Contracaecum sp. was found in both species; while acanthocephalans, only in H. unitaeniatus. The alterations were vacuolization, nucleus in the cell periphery, deformation of the cell outline, melanomacrophage center, hyperemia, cytoplasmic degeneration and nuclear vacuolization. Through calculating a histological alteration index, it was found that 26.19% of the specimens presented lesions in stage I; 38.09% lesions in stage II and 9.52% lesions in stage III. It was concluded that there is high prevalence of Contracaecum sp. and that the liver lesions may be adaptive responses by the fish to endoparasitic infection.

This study analyzed the parasitism by Clinostomum sp. metacercariae of the neotropical fish Cichlasoma paranaense (Kullander 1983) and environmental variables' influence on their host-parasite relationship in Central Brazil. Fish were collected in five impoundments (I) from three towns: Itauçú (n = 2), Inhumas (n = 1), and Goiânia (n = 2), Goiás State, Brazil. Ninety-five fish were analyzed, weighted and length measured. Afterward, the presence of metacercariae in the gills, muscles, fins, and body cavities was investigated. The metacercariae were fixed in AFA solution, kept in 70% alcohol, and stained with carmine. The infection prevalence revealed that 0.64, 0.56 and 0.91% of fish was infected. The abundance was 4.14, 3.22 and 5.88, with a mean intensity of 6.44, 5.80 and 6.42 per impoundment (I 13, I 15 and I 16), respectively. The frequency of metacercariae was higher in fish collected in Goiânia. High frequency of parasites was observed in the gills, muscles, and fins. The limnological variables did not present direct interference in the parasitism. The fish' standard length influenced the number of metacercariae positively but did not differ to the relative condition coefficient.
