ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To design and validate a Brazilian version of the Animal Empathy Scale, based on the existing Portuguese version. METHODS: Content validity assessment was performed by expert judges, and the adapted scale was administered to a sample of 386 participants. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were performed. RESULTS: The bifactorial profile of the scale remained consistent, comprising Empathic Concern for Animals (Cronbach's alpha and McDonald's omega coefficients: 0.75) and Emotional Attachment with Animals (Cronbach's alpha and McDonald's omega coefficients: 0.79). Considering the One Health framework, collaborative, multidisciplinary, and intersectoral approaches are essential for achieving optimal health conditions for people, animals, and the environment given their intricate interconnections. Empathy plays a crucial role in promoting proximity between humans and animals, fostering positive connections that encourage biodiversity conservation. CONCLUSION: The 13 statements were retained, confirming the validity of the animal empathy scale for use in Brazil, and a Brazilian version of the Animal Empathy Scale was established.

ABSTRACT

During the pandemic, there were a lot of lockdowns that brought changes to the population's daily routine, reducing social interactions, changing work and study methods, isolating the family at their home, which brought changes to family dynamics. These changes sparked the interest of nursing students in carrying out a research study. Starting from the question: What is the role of the dog in the family dynamics in times of pandemic? and the objective: identify the guardians' perceptions about the role of the dog in the family dynamics in a period of confinement, a qualitative, exploratory, and descriptive study was carried out, collecting data through a focus group with six guardians from different families. Bardin's protocol was used to analyze and process the data. Three categories emerged in this study, highlighting the benefits in terms of mental health, physical and psychological well-being of the family with the presence of the dog, its importance in strengthening family ties and the lessons learned from adopting the dogs. We conclude that, in nursing, it is necessary to highlight the presence of the dog in the family since it brings benefits to its dynamics.

ABSTRACT

The still-face effect has been extensively studied in human infants and comprises the reduction in affiliative behaviors and increased stress that occurs after a sudden interruption of social interaction with a caregiver. Domestic dogs (Canis familiaris) are model candidates for showing this effect, as they form deep bonds with their owners and interspecific social interaction is reinforcing to them. The aim of these studies was to assess if companion dogs exhibit the still-face effect and whether prior experiences during ontogeny modulate this effect. To this end, Study 1 compared dogs with different levels of training (untrained, intermediate, and advanced), while Study 2 assessed dogs that participated in Animal Assisted Interventions (AAIs) and companion dogs (CDs). The procedure was carried out virtually and comprised three phases lasting 1 min: interaction, still-face (the owner turned suddenly indifferent), and reunion (the interaction was resumed). Dogs exhibited a decrease in proximity to and contact with the owner, as well as an increase in begging and stress behaviors during the still-face phase. Moreover, this was not observed in a control condition in which the interaction continued in the same way during all three phases, discarding alternative explanations for these changes. These results show that dogs experience a still-face effect in a similar way to infants, highlighting the value interspecific social interaction has for dogs. Nevertheless, the absence of differences according to their training level or participation in AAIs suggests this is a robust phenomenon, which appears to be less susceptible to the influences of ontogenetic experiences.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this research is to investigate the existence of psychological impacts resulting from not recognizing grief after the loss of a pet. This is a case study with a qualitative approach. The research was carried out in the city of Canguçu in the southern region of Rio Grande do Sul, in Brazil. The study featured 5 women aged between 30 and 60 years old, who had lost a pet in the previous 12 months. This sample was randomly chosen, from the records of two veterinary clinics in the city. All participants were invited to participate in the study, authorizing it through the Informed Consent form. A semi-structured interview was conducted, which was recorded, and audio from the interviews was transcribed, while obtained data were analyzed and divided into catego-ries. This study was approved by a research ethics committee. The obtained results show that in relation to social recognition, the lack of empathy from society was evident, not legitimizing this type of grief. There are some signi-ficant impacts due to the failure in recognizing grief, such as: isolation, fear, sadness, guilt, pain for hiding their suffering and feeling of incomprehension.

ABSTRACT

The relationship between man and animal has narrowed over the years, causing them to be considered as family members. However, not all owners are aware of the correct ways of raising animals. The objective of this research was to evaluate the level of population knowledge on the ways of handling and breeding dogs and cats. The present work consists of the application of an online questionnaire to the population of Patrocínio-MG. The questionnaire included objective questions about the owner's personal data, animal data, types of care, management and prevention of diseases. The percentage values obtained in each question were compared using the chi-square test at 5% signiÞ cance. A total of 345 dog and cat owners, residents of the city of Patrocínio -MG, participated in the research. Most of the interviewees are up to 25 years old, have secondary education and have a salary range of one minimum wage. This population has greater preference for breeding dogs, with deÞ ned breeds, adults, preferably fed wit dry feed. The owners provide multiple antiviral and rabies vaccination in animals from puppies with a booster dose annually, and deworming being carried out periodically. It is concluded that the population knows about the types of care and management of dogs and cats, providing them with the basic care needed.(AU)

ABSTRACT

The aversive management of farmed species may present serious consequences on productivity, reproduction, and animal welfare. Thus, studies that aim at a good human-animal relationship (HAR) and apply gentle touch, as an attempt to make this management more beneficial for humans and animals are required. In this sense, massage with bare hands is a new proposal to improve HAR with domestic ruminants. Therefore, the objectives of this review are: (1) understand the importance of a good relationship between humans and domestic ruminants, including the interaction of touch; (2) describe the impact of massage on various parameters related to physiology and emotional and behavioral states in humans and animals, and (3) propose the use of the Stroking technique (relaxing massage) in domestic ruminants as a mean to encourage producers and caretakers to use massage as an alternative method to improve HAR. Different studies and protocols have shown the importance of touch in promoting a good HAR, in addition to the various impacts of massage on humans and animals. By demonstrating that goats massaged with the Stroking technique showed positive behaviors like licking the masseur, the importance of encouraging the study of the modulation of other topics such as physiological, zootechnical, and psychological parameters in massaged domestic ruminants is highlighted. Thus, the application of relaxing massage, Stroking, as a new tool for improving human-animal interaction with domestic ruminants is a proposal that aims to create a closer relationship with animals, possibly influencing the way producers and caregivers perceive these sentient beings.

ABSTRACT

Cutaneous leishmaniasis is a vector-borne disease that produces growing skin ulcers. In Colombia, the transmitting phlebotomine sandfly is native to the same jungles that have been the primary theater of war. Although combatants are the most affected by leishmaniasis, military landmine detection dogs are also significantly impacted. This article draws on ethnographic field research with human and canine members of the Colombian military. While their leishmaniasis ulcers constitute a shared expression of violence that makes evident the closeness of the human-dog bond, differences in their state-provided health care reveal the production of shifting species hierarchies. I argue that war scrambles both human-dog affective relationships and biopolitically configured interspecies hierarchies in ways that produce suffering, not just for humans and dogs separately, but also for the bonds they forge together. Building peace through health care demands repairing the ways in which armed violence has rendered the bonds between humans and nonhumans pathological.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to evaluate the demographic and healthcare situation of dogs and cats owned by families assisted by the Family Health Strategy (FHS), from Santa Maria/RS, Brazil. This research was a cross-sectional and population-based study developed by applying a questionnaire to residents in the 16 FHS areas of the city. This was the first study addressing pet animal conditions in the FHS area. A total of 414 households were studied, and 88.5% of them had pets (dogs and/or cats), with an average of 2.2 dogs and 0.8 cats per household. Only 18.4% (228/1.241) of the animals were sterilized (dogs, 15.1% [135/891]; cats, 26.7% [93/348]). When considering the number of dogs, households with one resident had fewer dogs than households with two or more residents (p=0.006). The level of education and family income were not associated with the number of animals (p>0.001). However, higher levels of education and family income were associated with the sterilization of dogs, veterinary monitoring, vaccination, and treatment of ectoparasites in dogs and cats (p<0.0001). Additionally, the higher family income was associated with a higher frequency of endoparasite treatment (p<0.05). The study shows a high average number of pets per household in FSH areas compared to the average household population as well as a lack of veterinary care, making it essential to promote responsible custody.

ABSTRACT

Dog bite is one of the major public health problems involving people worldwide. Although, several studies have investigated this phenomenon in different countries, little information about the incidence of dog bite episodes in Italy is available. We analysed data about dog biting events between 2010 and 2019 provided by the CRIUV, the Regional Reference Centre for Veterinary Urban Hygiene in the largest city of Southern Italy, namely. Naples. We observed severe and profound inconsistencies in the data collection that reveal structural and significant weaknesses of the current data collection system. Given the multifactorial nature of dog bite, we highlight the need to improve the gathering of all the information related to the factors affecting the occurrence of biting episodes for an accurate assessment of the biting phenomenon.

ABSTRACT

Despite the abundance of studies investigating the benefits of having a dog, the specific aspects of dog ownership that impacts human well-being are not well understood. This study used a qualitative approach to create a framework of the main dog-related activities perceived by Brazilian owners to impact their well-being and compared the findings with those of a similar study in England. Thirty-two Brazilian dog owners from the five regions of the country were remotely interviewed. The thematic analysis of the transcripts generated a total of 58 dog-related activities, organised into 13 themes. Most activities were reported to have a positive effect on participants' well-being, accounting for 76.8% of the total number of mentions in the interviews. 'Playing with dog' and 'Dog presence' were the themes most frequently associated with positive well-being outcomes, whereas 'Unwanted behaviours' and 'Failing to meet dog's needs' were the most commonly associated with negative outcomes. The dog-related activities reported by Brazilian dog owners and the well-being outcomes linked to those activities were consistent with the previous British sample in the framework that emerged. These findings suggest reliability between the two methods used to gather data (remote interview versus focus group) and, most importantly, provide consistent cross-cultural evidence for how certain activities impact dog owner's well-being.

ABSTRACT

Rescue behavior is a kind of prosocial response that involves the provision of help to a stressed individual. This behavior has been observed in domestic dogs assisting their owners when they pretended to be trapped. Given the role of the hormone oxytocin as a facilitator for prosocial behavior, we aimed to evaluate the effects of its intranasal administration on the rescue behavior of dogs directed to their owners. In addition, we used the Monash Dog Owner Relationship Scale (MDORS) to assess whether the dog-owner bond was associated with this behavior. After receiving either oxytocin or saline, dogs participated in a stressed condition in which their owner pretended to be stressed inside of a box, or a control one, in which the owner was in a calm state. Dogs released their owners more frequently in the stressed condition. Contrary to our expectations, dogs who received oxytocin were less likely to open the box and took longer to do so than those that received saline. Regarding the dog-owner bond, dogs in the stressed condition who received oxytocin exhibited a lower rate and a higher latency of openings the more intense the bond was, while the opposite pattern was observed in dogs in the control condition who received saline. In conclusion, dogs would rescue their owners when they pretended to be trapped and stressed. Both oxytocin administration and the bond with the owner appear to modulate this behavior, but further studies are needed to inquire into the involved mechanisms.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

The Novel Coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 pandemic still raises questions in the scientific community about the source of disease contamination, and confirmation of COVID-19 as a new anthropozoonosis, which seeks to understand the role of animals in the beginning and maintainance of the pandemic cycle. Specially, dogs and cats are of greater concern because of their close, almost uninterrupted, contact with humans sharing the same environment, thus increasing their risk of exposure to the pathogen. In these animals, other strains of coronavirus are known to cause species-specific diseases, such as respiratory canine coronavirus and enteric canine coronavirus in dogs and feline coronavirus in cats. However, both can occasionally cause disease only in other species of non-human animals. Some reports of natural SARS-CoV-2 infection in dogs and cats have been published, as well as investigations into the susceptibility of these species to the virus. International human and animal health surveillance institutions have also commented on the relationship between domestic animals and COVID-19. This review intends to update the reader about SARS-CoV-2 infections in the context of dogs and cats, discussing the connections between these animals and the new human coronavirus and warning about the inappropriate and unnecessary abandonment of these animals during the COVID-19 pandemic.(AU)

ABSTRACT

The relationship of a child with a pet, under duly controlled circumstances, is beneficial for both. Pets establish emotional attachments to children, and the relationship turns out positive in terms of affective aspects, in reinforcement of the child ́s personality and promoting self-esteem, and in cognitive development, among many other advantages.Nevertheless, there are real risks in the coexistence of kids and pets: trauma, bites, several injuries and also disease transmission. Risk factors of injuries can be inherent in children (age, improper behavior, lack of supervision), in the environment (small houses, inadequate spaces), or in dogs (big or not recommended breeds, aggressive behaviors). This consensus insists on some guidelines for a responsible tenure and safe coexistence. Dogs and cats are recommended as pets, discouraging exotic species and non-traditional animals. Guidelines for bites treatment are provided and the main zoonoses of which pets can be carriers and transmitters are outlined

ABSTRACT

Identifying and preventing the occurrence of separation-related problems (SRP) in companion animals are relevant to animal welfare and the quality of human-pet interactions. The SRP are defined as a set of behaviors and physiological signs displayed by the animal when separated from its attachment person. In cats, SRP has been insufficiently studied. Thus, the objective of this study was to develop a questionnaire for cat owners which identifies behaviors that may indicate SRP, as well as relates the occurrence of SRP to the management practices applied in the sampled cats. The associations of SRP with cats' characteristics, as well as owner, environmental, and management traits were investigated. The questionnaire was developed based on the scientific literature about separation anxiety syndrome in dogs and a few papers in cats, and it was completed by 130 owners of 223 cats. Analysis of owners' answers was done through categorization and acquisition of relative frequencies of each response category, followed by Fisher's exact test, chi-square tests in contingency table and Multiple Correspondence Analysis. Among the sampled animals, 13.45% (30 / 223) met at least one of the behavioral criteria we used to define SRP. Destructive behavior was the most frequently reported behavior (66.67%, 20 / 30), followed by excessive vocalization (63.33%, 19 / 30), urination in inappropriate places (60.00%, 18 / 30), depression-apathy (53.33%, 16 / 30), aggressiveness (36.67%, 11 / 30) and agitation-anxiety (36.67%, 11 / 30) and, in lower frequency, defecation in inappropriate places (23.33%, 7 / 30). The occurrence of SRP was associated with the number of females living in the residence (P = 0.01), with not having access to toys (P = 0.04), and no other animal residing in the house (P = 0.04). Separation-related problems in domestic cats are difficult to identify due to the limited amount of knowledge regarding the issue. The questionnaire developed in this study supported identification of the main behaviors likely related to SRP in cats and could be used as a starting point for future research.
