ABSTRACT

Pyridaben is a broad-spectrum acaricide widely used in agriculture, accidental or self-administration of large doses of pyridaben can cause multiple organ failure in patients. Due to its damage to multiple organs and no specific antidote, the mortality rate is high. This paper reports two patients who took a large amount of pyridaben, developed severe metabolic acidosis, hyperlactatemia, toxic encephalopathy, and liver, kidney, heart and digestive tract damage. After timely gastric lavage, catharsis, organ support andblood purification treatment, the condition improved and discharged. It is expected to provide clinical ideas for the treatment of pyridaben poisoning.

ABSTRACT

On April 10, 2014 the Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) was notified by a local newspaper of a suspected pesticide poisoning incident in Douglas County involving pesticides not previously reported in the published literature to be associated with human illness. On that same day, WSDA notified the Washington State Department of Health, which investigated this incident by conducting a site visit, reviewing medical and applicator records, and interviewing affected farmworkers, pesticide applicators, and the farmworkers' employer. In addition, on April 11, WSDA collected swab, foliage, and clothing samples and tested them for residues of pyridaben, novaluron, and triflumizole. In this incident, all 20 farmworkers working in a cherry orchard became ill from off-target drift of a pesticide mixture that was being applied to a neighboring pear orchard. Sixteen sought medical treatment for neurologic, gastrointestinal, ocular, and respiratory symptoms. This event highlights the need for greater efforts to prevent off-target drift exposures and promote awareness about the toxicity of some recently marketed pesticides. Incidents such as this could be prevented if farm managers planning pesticide applications notify their neighbors of their plans.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to review the medical records of dogs that were either suspected or known to have ingested large doses of pimobendan and to describe the clinical signs associated with pimobendan toxicosis. The database of Pet Poison Helpline, an animal poison control center located in Minneapolis, MN, was searched for cases involving pimobendan toxicosis from Nov 2004 to Apr 2010. In total, 98 cases were identified. Of those, seven dogs that ingested between 2.6 mg/kg and 21.3 mg/kg were selected for further evaluation. Clinical signs consisted of cardiovascular abnormalities, including severe tachycardia (4/7), hypotension (2/7), and hypertension (2/7). In two dogs, no clinical signs were seen. Despite a wide safety profile, large overdoses of pimobendan may present risks for individual pets. Prompt decontamination, including emesis induction and the administration of activated charcoal, is advised in the asymptomatic patient. Symptomatic and supportive care should include the use of IV fluid therapy to treat hypotension and address hydration requirements and blood pressure and electrocardiogram monitoring with high-dose toxicosis. Practitioners should be aware of the clinical signs associated with high-dose pimobendan toxicosis. Of the dogs reported herein, all were hospitalized, responded to supportive care, and survived to discharge within 24 hr of exposure.

ABSTRACT

By 1990, the Clin Midy (SANOFI) laboratory had modified the dose of Cantor tablets: the content of active drug (minaprine) increased (50 to 100 mg). Therefore, acute intoxication by minaprine can be serious, with generalized seizures, resisting the classic treatment. We tried to evaluate the possible consequences of this change of dose for the gravity of suicide attempts. 1091 voluntary acute intoxications have been collected by the national French Poisons Centres data bank, 226 of them by the Poisons center of Marseilles. We have compared, by the chi 2 method, the frequencies of seizure and death, before and after 1990. Results are significant, confirming an increased gravity of these intoxications since the modification of dosage. Then, the laboratory reduced the number of tablets per box. We don't know if this measure will be efficient.
