ABSTRACT

Early childhood caries, like other forms of caries, is characterized by being multifactorial, infectious, and rapidly evolving. It can present as cavitated or uncavitated lesions, it is mainly diagnosed in children under six years of age on the surfaces of the anterior superior teeth, because they are the first dental organs to erupt and have greater contact with the cariogenic stimulus. In severe cases they can cause the loss of dental organs, influencing the general health of the patient and impacting on their self-esteem and psychosocial development. In order to restore the lost features and functions in the absence of any dental organ, it is resorted to by means of appliances, mostly in the form of a functional space maintainer. The individual aesthetic needs of each case generate various alternatives to adapt to the patient's situation (AU)

ABSTRACT

Adult patients normally prefer invisible orthodontic treatment. Orthodontics can improvethe aesthetics, align and level the teeth improvingthe periodontal health and also position the teeth to receive the prosthetic treatmentwith a better prognosis.

ABSTRACT

Permanent teeth that remain impacted could lead to the early loss of primary teeth and cause space problems in dental arches. We present two cases of ectopic eruption of the permanent maxillary first molars treated with soft distal movements using a modified Nance palatal arch (NPAm). The wire was soldered to the band and positioned distally to serve as support for the elastic chain, which was attached to a bonded button on the occlusal surface. After a few months, the ectopic eruption was corrected, preserving the adjacent primary teeth and restoring the occlusion. An NPAm is a viable option for distalization and space recovery in the maxillary arch.

ABSTRACT

Dentoalveolar ankylosis is described as the direct union between root cementum/dentin and alveolar bone. Its etiology is unknown, and conflicting opinions have been presented to explain it. Late detection of ankylosed primary teeth may cause serious problems to the occlusion and generally demands a more complex treatment approach. The purpose of this report is to present an unusual case of severe infraocclusion of the primary maxillary right second molar associated with a posterior crossbite in a 6-year-old child. The initial treatment option was tooth extraction, but the tooth resumed eruption spontaneously. After correction of the posterior crossbite and a 1-year follow-up, the tooth remained in occlusion and the permanent successor was developing without problems. From this unusual outcome, it may be concluded that further investigation of this anomaly of eruption is needed.

ABSTRACT

Restoration of severely decayed primary teeth is a clinical challenge in Pediatric Dentistry. Among the restorative treatment options, the use of prefabricated crowns and resin composite restorations, either by means of direct or indirect techniques is mentioned in the literature. The purpose of this article is to describe the rehabilitation of primary anterior teeth in a 5-year-old patient. Dental treatment consisted on an anterior space maintainer prosthesis made with natural primary teeth, plus human dental enamel veneer (facet) restorations. The advantages of this technique are better esthetics and the natural enamel has physiologic wear and offers superficial smoothness and cervical adaptation compatible with those of the surrounding teeth.

ABSTRACT

A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in 150 patients aged 6-9 from "Angel Hernández Chirino" school service in the municipality of Guanabacoa, during the school course 2000-2001, aimed at identifying the main affectations of the second temporal molars and the peventive actions the general comprehensive stomatologist may take. It was observed that 40 percent of the patients of the cases had fillings, 29.3 percent had extractions, 25.3 percent presented extensive caries, 3.4 percent had oligodontia, and 2 percent losses due to trauma. It was significant that 53.5 percent had already received secondary attention due to loss of space. 46.4 percent were applied a space-maintainer by the general comprehensive stomatologist at the primary health care level. It was observed a predominance of those made by the acrylic technique. It was concluded that the treatment applied by the general comprehensive stomatologist at this level is fundamental, since this technique should be used when loss of temporal tooth occurs in order to avoid that this patient seeks care at the secondary level(AU)

ABSTRACT
