RESUMO

A threeyearold domestic shorthair cat was referred for treatment of pelvic limb paralysis. Imaging examinations revealed air in the spinal canal (pneumorrhachis). A rightsided hemilaminectomy was performed to decompress the spinal cord, which led to full resolution of the symptoms within four weeks after the procedure. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of spontaneous pneumorrhachis in a cat. As there are no treatment standards, we would like to add to their creation. The available literature on pneumorrhachis has also been reviewed.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The aim of the study was to assess the usefulness of duplex Doppler to objectify swine renal arterial flow in physiological conditions. The pig kidney was selected for its morphological similarities to the human and for the results therefore offering data to wider research. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Six White Large x Landrace sows, of 48.5-53 kg b.w. were used. Vascular flow parameters were acquired with a convex probe USG device with a duplex Doppler function using pulsed waves (frequency range of 5-7.5 MHz). Segmental kidney arterial flow was measured. RESULTS: The RI values were within the 0.57 (min) to 0.6 (max) range, x RI was 0.58 (±0.014), and the SD2value was 0.0002. The PI index values ranged from 1.21 (min) to 1.3 (max), and x PI was 1.24 (±0.035). The value of SD2was 0.00123. In the S/D index, the results fell between 2.2 (min) and 2.49 (max), with x S/D of 2.29 (±0.117). The value of variance SD2was 0.0139. A double analysis of correlation between indices showed this to be almost certain and highly positive as confirmed by high correlation coefficients: r RI & PI 0.857, rho RI & PI 0.739, r RI & S/D 0.930, rho RI & S/D 0.941, r PI & S/D 0.913, and rho PI & S/D 0.754. The segmental kidney arterial flow spectrum evinced falls in PSV and PSV/LDV ratio, also noticed in the filling of the spectral window, comparing the renal to an interlobar artery. CONCLUSION: Swine were selected because of renal anatomical and haemodynamic similarity to humans. The most relevant values and indices approximated those in humans. The study anaesthetic protocol had a minor influence on the average RI, PI, and S/D indices.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The study aimed to observe TNF-α serum concentration as well as changes in respiration rate, body temperature, and pulse rate in burn victims during 84 h post burn. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 30 healthy pigs were divided into two groups: A, the test group and N, the control group. The experimental group suffered burns to 30% of the body surface, and after infliction of the burns both groups were closely monitored. RESULTS: The biggest increase in TNF-α serum concentration in the test subjects occurred around the 6th h of the study, and the second biggest increase took place between 12th and 36th h. In the 36th h, TNF-α was 2.5 times more concentrated in serum in the test group than in the control group. In the test group, the biggest increase in respiration rate occurred up to the 6th h post burn, on average up to 29/min. In the 12th h post burn, the mean pulse rate in the test group was 133/min and dropped to the lowest value in the 72nd h of the experiment. A gradual increase in body temperature up to 41.72°C was observed up to the 30th h post burn and decreased to a significant value of 40.74°C by the 84th h of the study. CONCLUSION: In a period of a pronounced rise in TNF-α serum concentration, this parameter, pulse rate, and respiration rate are highly correlated and are also influenced by multiple inflammation forming factors.

RESUMO

Hypospadias, the abnormal position of the urethral orifice, is considered a rare congenital malformation of the reproductive organs in male dogs. We present 5 new cases of hypospadias - 2 of the penile type in German Shepherd Dogs and 3 perineal types in a Bavarian Mountain Hound, a French Bulldog, and an American Staffordshire Terrier. Other abnormalities (rudimentary or underdeveloped penis, incompletely formed preputial sheath, and bilateral cryptorchidism) were also observed. Molecular analysis of all cases revealed the presence of Y-linked genes (SRY and ZFY). Cytogenetic and histological analysis could be performed for only 2 cases: a normal male sex chromosome complement (78,XY) and spermatogenetically inactive testicles were observed. A retrospective search for hypospadias in 19,950 medical records of male dogs from a single veterinary clinic in Poland (2006-2017) was also performed. Altogether, 10 reports of penile hypospadias were found (0.05%). The majority of the reports concerned German Shepherd Dogs (8 cases among 1,511 male dogs of this breed), and thus, the estimated incidence of hypospadias in this breed was 0.5%. Moreover, we performed a review of 26 cases of canine hypospadias reported in the years 2004-2017. Our study and the review of the literature suggest that hypospadias is not rare in dogs and that some breeds (such as German Shepherd Dog and Boston Terrier) may be prone to this disorder.

RESUMO

The research was carried out on 56 Chinchilla rabbits. The rabbits were divided into 8 groups with one control group. By means of stomach tube the rabbits were administered respectively: carbon tetrachloride (CCl4), synthetic analogue of prostaglandin misoprostol, CCl4 with misoprostol, indomethacin, misoprostol with indomethacin and CCl4 with misoprostol and indomethacin simultaneously. In order to confirm cytoprotective activity of prostaglandin E1 synthetic analogue in experimental acute hepatocellular damage, we measured in arterial blood the concentration of acetoacetate and beta-hydroxybutyrate and calculated molar ratio of their concentrations. The molar ratio of acetoacetate to beta-hydroxybutyrate which had been calculated for individual groups, regardless of the observed changes in ketone bodies' concentrations, in the case of rabbits which were administered CCl4 with misoprostol, had values similar to the ones obtained for the control group. The smallest value of the ketone body concentration ratio was stated at rabbits which were given only CCl4. The results of the research carried out unambiguously indicate hepatoprotective action of the synthetic analogue PGE1 which was administered to the rabbits.
