RESUMO

We sought to determine whether sperm donor selection could be improved by using the hyaluronan binding assay (HBA) score to predict live birth rates (LBRs) in donor insemination treatments. Thirty donor samples were included: five fresh samples to assess whether HBA score is affected by cryopreservation and 25 frozen samples from donors whose sperm gave rise to known live births, divided into three groups, with success rates ≥50%, <50-33% and <33%, to examine whether HBA score correlates with LBRs. Correlations with semen analysis parameters, as well as donor demographic factors, known causes of patient subfertility and/or the type of treatment provided were also assessed. There was no significant difference in the mean HBA score pre- and post-cryopreservation (p = 0.998) nor in the HBA score of the three different outcome groups (p = 0.89). HBA score was not significantly affected by other semen analysis parameters (r2=0.394, p = 0.127) or any of the other examined factors. This was the first study to investigate HBA score for cryopreserved donor samples with known LBRs. HBA score was not correlated with LBRs in this small pilot study. Larger studies are required to validate HBA score as a tool for sperm donor selection and predictor of LBRs.

RESUMO

Data quality is a difficult notion to define precisely, and different communities have different views and understandings of the subject. This causes confusion, a lack of harmonization of data across communities and omission of vital quality information. For some existing data infrastructures, data quality standards cannot address the problem adequately and cannot fulfil all user needs or cover all concepts of data quality. In this study, we discuss some philosophical issues on data quality. We identify actual user needs on data quality, review existing standards and specifications on data quality, and propose an integrated model for data quality in the field of Earth observation (EO). We also propose a practical mechanism for applying the integrated quality information model to a large number of datasets through metadata inheritance. While our data quality management approach is in the domain of EO, we believe that the ideas and methodologies for data quality management can be applied to wider domains and disciplines to facilitate quality-enabled scientific research.

RESUMO

GODIVA2 is a dynamic website that provides visual access to several terabytes of physically distributed, four-dimensional environmental data. It allows users to explore large datasets interactively without the need to install new software or download and understand complex data. Through the use of open international standards, GODIVA2 maintains a high level of interoperability with third-party systems, allowing diverse datasets to be mutually compared. Scientists can use the system to search for features in large datasets and to diagnose the output from numerical simulations and data processing algorithms. Data providers around Europe have adopted GODIVA2 as an INSPIRE-compliant dynamic quick-view system for providing visual access to their data.

RESUMO

Compute grids are used widely in many areas of environmental science, but there has been limited uptake of grid computing by the climate modelling community, partly because the characteristics of many climate models make them difficult to use with popular grid middleware systems. In particular, climate models usually produce large volumes of output data, and running them also involves complicated workflows implemented as shell scripts. A new grid middleware system that is well suited to climate modelling applications is presented in this paper. Grid Remote Execution (G-Rex) allows climate models to be deployed as Web services on remote computer systems and then launched and controlled as if they were running on the user's own computer. Output from the model is transferred back to the user while the run is in progress, to prevent it from accumulating on the remote system and to allow the user to monitor the model. G-Rex has a representational state transfer (REST) architectural style, featuring a Java client program that can easily be incorporated into existing scientific workflow scripts. Some technical details of G-Rex are presented, with examples of its use by climate modellers.

RESUMO

The gene for the neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptor alpha4 subunit (CHRNA4) was identified as a gene underlying a rare idiopathic partial epilepsy syndrome in humans, autosomal dominant nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy (ADNFLE). In a recent study, one of four silent polymorphisms (594 C/T) in CHRNA4 showed association with the common subtypes of idiopathic generalised epilepsy (IGE). In the present study, three of these polymorphisms were investigated for association in 182 Caucasian patients with IGE, but not categorised by subtype. They were compared with 178 controls in a case/control study. Further analyses were performed using a family-based design. None of the three polymorphisms exhibited any association with IGE. Am. J. RESUMO

The genes of two group III metabotropic glutamate receptors, mGluR7 and 8, are candidate susceptibility genes for epilepsy. The Tyr433Phe polymorphism of mGluR7 and a novel polymorphism in the mGluR8 gene located 29 bp after the termination codon (2756C/T) were investigated in case control association studies performed on DNA from more than 100 patients with idiopathic generalised epilepsy (IGE). No significant association was found with IGE for either polymorphism.
