RESUMO
The Genomics Education Partnership (GEP), a consortium of diverse colleges/universities, provides support for integrating genomics research into undergraduate curricula. To increase research opportunities for underrepresented students, GEP is expanding to more community colleges (CC). Genomics research, requiring only a computer with internet access, may be particularly accessible for 2-year institutions with limited research capacity and significant budget constraints. To understand how GEP supports student research at CCs, we analyzed student knowledge and self-reported outcomes. We found that CC student gains are comparable to non-CC student gains, with improvements in attitudes toward science and thriving in science. Our early findings suggest that the GEP model of centralized support with flexible CURE implementation benefits CC students and may help mitigate barriers to implementing research at CCs.

With the emergence of new anticoagulants, clinicians need a thorough understanding of coagulation assays. Various laboratory assays exist to measure the effectiveness of anticoagulants. Coagulation assays are the primary method for measuring the effectiveness of anticoagulants; therefore, a comprehensive understanding of the various assays is critical to interpret the results appropriately. Coagulation test results can be affected by multiple factors including diseases, drugs, and genetic variations. This article reviews the indications, limitations, and interpretation of coagulation assays.

Thirty-eight patients with predominantly organic and 29 with psychogenic impotence had intracavernosal injections of a combination of 30 mg papaverine and 1 mg phentolamine on at least one occasion. An immediate increase in length and penile rigidity resulted in all subjects. Eighteen of the organic patients subsequently developed spontaneous erections for periods ranging from 1 week to 1 month. Nineteen of the 24 patients in the psychogenic group had spontaneous erections, five for at least 4 months and 14 for 2 to 8 weeks. Increasing the dose was of benefit only to organic patients who initially had a poor response. Three of eight patients with a poor immediate response to pharmacologically induced penile erections (PIPE) were found to have venous incompetence. PIPE is therefore of value in the diagnosis and treatment of organic and psychogenic impotence.

KIE: A National Health Service psychotherapist criticizes the strategems employed by hospital staff in their communication with cancer patients. He argues that the issue is not simply whether or not to tell the truth but, more importantly, how to do so. Silence, deception, euphemistic language, and projection of the physician's or nurse's feelings onto the patient aggravate psychological stress and deny the patient an appropriate role in decision making.^ieng

Embryology has shown that fetal studies may give some information on past development and about the latest state of development of individuals. Also, an important conclusion is that the neonate should be considered a complexly functioning adult in the embryonic stage rather than an amorphous living creature.
