Brotizolam, a new thieno-triazolodiazepine, was tested against flunitrazepam and placebo on patients the night before surgery. Flunitrazepam had a shorter onset of action while brotizolam caused longer and deeper sleep with no gastro-intestinal side-effects. It was preferred to flunitrazepam by the patients.

The incidence of multiple gestation has increased as a result of ovulation stimulation in recent years. The early diagnosis by ultrasonography of the quintuplet gestation and the institution of special treatment to prevent the most common complications are discussed. The patient was delivered of five male infants at caesarean section after early rupture of membranes. Routine scanning during the first trimester plays an important role in the diagnosis of multiple gestation early in pregnancy. In the present case ultrasonography was used extensively in conjunction with other parameters. We feel that this management may have contributed largely to the successful outcome.

Flunitrazepam (Rohypnol) was investigated as an intravenous induction agent for dental procedures in 15 patients in a private anaesthetic practice. During this study it was noted that the normal halothane requirement could be reduced substantially. A second study to investigate this new phenomenon was done on 50 patients who underwent major surgery. The results indicate that adequate anaesthesia can be maintained with flunitrazepam.

A comparative trial of nitrazepam, and triazolam (U-33,030) as pre-anaesthetic medicaments in patients allegedly not subject to insomnia, was undertaken the night before operation. The inclusion of placebo controls confirmed earlier findings that the majority of these patients suffer from transient insomnia. Nitrazepam and flurazepam are hypnotics, and in this study, triazolam also proved to be an hypnotic remarkably free of adverse effects.
