The ideal sagittal position of the maxilla is highly subjective in orthognathic surgical treatment planning. There is no consensus on an analysis to predict the ideal sagittal position of the maxilla. The objective of this study was to determine the preferred maxillary position in relation to the forehead shape, in the Southern Chinese population. The maxilla position of eight patients was simulated based on Steiner's analysis (SA), glabella vertical (GV), Andrews' Element II (AE2), and the Barcelona reference (BR). The simulations were then used in an electronic survey, where respondents ranked the images for each patient from to 1-4 (most to least attractive). A total of 128 responses were collected from dental professionals and laypersons. The most preferred to the least preferred simulation was as follows (mean rank scores for the male and female patients in parenthesis): BR (males 2.06; females 1.98), GV (males 2.11; females 2.21), SA (males 2.59; females 2.40), and AE2 (males 3.24; females 3.41). There was no significant difference in the results according to the sex, age group, or profession of the respondents. The Barcelona reference and glabella vertical are useful in predicting the ideal maxillary position in patients with a flat forehead, and the Barcelona reference is the most preferred in patients with a rounded forehead.

In April 2016, an outbreak emerged in a cultured population of black-spotted pond frog tadpoles in Shuangliu County, China, whereas tadpoles were suffering from substantial mortality (90%). Principal clinical signs of diseased tadpoles were comprised haemorrhage on their body surface, swollen abdomen with yellow ascites, congestion and swelling of the liver. The diseased tadpole's homogenates tissue were inoculated into epithelioma papulosum cyprini (EPC) cells at 25 °C for 4 days which caused typical cytopathic effect, and the viral titer TCID50 reached 107/0.1 mL. In pathogenicity tests, tadpoles were immersed in 2‰ virus fluid for 8 h, the clinical signs were observed similar to those recognized in naturally infected tadpoles and mortality rate were reached up to 80%, which affirms that the virus was the main cause for this disease. In addition, transmission electron microscopy of EPC cells infected with isolated virus reflected that the virus was in a regular hexagon way (shape) with capsule like structure. The diagonal diameter was recorded 135 ±â€¯8 nm, wherever virus particles were arrayed in crystalline manner in the cytoplasm. The electrophoresis of MCP gene PCR-product showed that the samples of diseased tadpoles, aquaculture water source and isolated virus were all positive. The sequence of the isolate revealed more than 99% similarities to ranavirus based on homology and genetic evolution analysis of the whole MCP gene, and the isolate belongs to FV3-like virus group. This study confirmed that ranavirus was the causative agent of this outbreak, and named the virus as Rana nigromaculata ranavirus (RNRV).

OBJECTIVE: To review the outcome for Chinese infants and young children on chronic peritoneal dialysis. METHODS: The Paediatric Nephrology Centre of Princess Margaret Hospital is the designated site offering chronic dialysis to children in Hong Kong. Medical records of children who started chronic peritoneal dialysis before the age of 2 years, from 1 July 1995 to 31 December 2013, were retrieved and retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS: Nine Chinese patients (male-to-female ratio, 3:6) were identified. They were commenced on automated peritoneal dialysis at a median age of 4.7 (interquartile range, 1.1-13.3) months. The median duration of chronic peritoneal dialysis was 40.9 (interquartile range, 22.9-76.2) months. The underlying aetiologies were renal dysplasia (n=3), pneumococcal-associated haemolytic uraemic syndrome (n=3), ischaemic nephropathy (n=2), and primary hyperoxaluria I (n=1). Peritonitis and exit-site infection rate was 1 episode per 46.5 patient-months and 1 episode per 28.6 patient-months, respectively. Dialysis adequacy (Kt/Vurea>1.8) was achieved in 87.5% of patients. Weight gain was achieved in our patients although three required gastrostomy. Four patients were delayed in development. All patients survived except one patient with primary hyperoxaluria I who died of acute portal vein thrombosis following liver transplantation. One patient with pneumococcal-associated haemolytic uraemic syndrome had sufficient renal function to be weaned off dialysis. Four patients received deceased donor renal transplantation after a mean waiting time of 76.7 months. Three patients remained on chronic peritoneal dialysis at the end of the study. CONCLUSIONS: Chronic peritoneal dialysis is technically difficult in infants. Nonetheless, low peritonitis rate, low exit-site infection rate, and no chronic peritoneal dialysis-related mortality can be achieved. Chronic peritoneal dialysis offers a promising strategy to bridge the way to renal transplantation.

Streptococcus agalactiae (Group B streptococcus, GBS) has emerged as an important pathogen that affects humans and animals, including aquatic species. In August 2011, a severe infectious disease affecting rabbits, which caused 42% mortality, occurred in Mianyang, Sichuan Province, China. The main clinical signs included acute respiratory distress syndrome, fever, paddling and convulsions. A Gram-positive, chain-forming coccus was isolated from the primary organs and tissues of diseased rabbits and then identified as S. agalactiae by morphology, biochemical and physiological characteristics, 16S rDNA and gyrB gene sequences analysis. All isolates of S. agalactiae showed a similar antibiotic susceptibility, which were sensitive to florfenicol, ampicillin,gentamicin and norfloxacin, as well as being resistant to penicillin, amoxicillin and tetracycline. To our knowledge, this is the first report on S. agalactiae natural infection in domestic rabbits.

Streptococcus agalactiae (Group B streptococcus) has emerged as an important pathogen that affects humans and animals, including aquatic species. S. agalactiae infections are becoming an increasing problem in aquaculture and have been reported worldwide in a variety of fish species, especially those living in warm water. Recently, a very serious infectious disease of unknown aetiology broke out in ya-fish (Schizothorax prenanti) farms in Sichuan Province. A Gram-positive, chain-forming coccus was isolated from moribund cultured ya-fish. The goals of this study were to identify the bacterial strains isolated from diseased fish between 2009 and 2011 in Sichuan Province, China, to evaluate the pathogenicity of the pathogen in ya-fish, crucian carp (Carassius carassius) and the Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus); and to determine the susceptibility of the pathogen strains to many currently available anti-microbial agents. The virulence tests were conducted by intraperitoneal injection of bacterial suspensions. In this study, four strains of a Gram-positive, chain-forming coccus were isolated from moribund cultured ya-fish (S. prenanti). The coccoid microorganism was identified as S. agalactiae using a commercial streptococcal grouping kit and 16S rDNA sequencing analysis. Susceptibility of the isolates to 22 antibiotics was tested using the disc diffusion method. All isolates showed a similar antibiotic susceptibility, which were sensitive to amoxicillin, ciprofloxacin, lomefloxacin, chloramphenicol, rifampin, vancomycin, azithromycin, florfenicol, cefalexin, cefradine and deoxycycline and resistant to gentamicin, sinomin (SMZ/TMP), penicillin, tenemycin, fradiomycin and streptomycin. Furthermore, the virulence tests were conducted by intraperitoneal injection of the isolated strain GY101 in ya-fish, crucian carp and the Nile tilapia. This coccus was lethal to ya-fish, Nile tilapia and crucian carp. The mortality rates of infected ya-fish were 100%, 100%, 60% and 20% at doses of 1.0 × 107, 1.0 × 106, 1.0 × 105 and 1.0 × 104 CFU/fish, respectively. The values were 100%, 80%, 60% and 30% for Nile tilapia and 100%, 60%, 10% and 0% for crucian carp. To our knowledge, this is the first report of S. agalactiae as a pathogen of ya-fish.

From February to May 2010, an outbreak of disease occurred amongst farmed Chinese giant salamanders (Andrias davidianus) in Hanzhong County, Shanxi Province, China. Clinical signs included anorexia, lethargy, ecchymoses and swollen areas on the head and limbs, and skin ulceration. The aim of this study was to determine the cause of this disease. Necropsy examination revealed subcutaneous and intramuscular oedema, swollen and pale livers with multifocal haemorrhage, swollen kidneys with multifocal haemorrhage and distended fluid-filled intestines with areas of haemorrhage. Light microscopy revealed intracytoplasmic inclusions suggestive of a viral infection in a variety of organs, as well as degeneration and necrosis of these organs. Electron microscopy of ultrathin sections of the same tissues revealed iridovirus-like particles within the inclusions. Of the six specimens tested, all were positive for ranavirus major capsid protein (MCP) gene. Sequence alignments of the ranavirus MCP gene from these specimens showed 95-98% similarity with published ranavirus data. The virus, provisionally designated as Chinese giant salamander virus (CGSV), was isolated from tissue homogenates of diseased salamanders following inoculation of epithelioma papilloma cyprini cells. Sequence analysis of the MCP genes showed that the isolated virus was a ranavirus with marked sequence identity to other members of the genus Ranavirus. Koch's postulates were fulfilled by infecting healthy Chinese giant salamanders with the CGSV. These salamanders all died within 6-8 days. This is the first report of ranavirus infection associated with mass mortality in Chinese giant salamanders.

OBJECTIVE: To study the childhood renal disease pattern based on the renal biopsy histology in a local paediatric tertiary renal centre. DESIGN: Retrospective study. SETTING: Department of Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, Princess Margaret Hospital, Hong Kong. PATIENTS: All patients who underwent real-time ultrasound-guided closed renal biopsy from 1 April 1997 to 31 March 2007 were included. RESULTS: A total of 209 renal biopsies were performed, 162 on native kidneys and 47 on grafts. In the native group, major indications were renal manifestations secondary to systemic diseases (34%), followed by idiopathic nephrotic syndrome (28%) and haematuria (27%). In 94% the histopathology revealed glomerular diseases. Among the primary glomerular diseases, thin glomerular basement membrane disease, immunoglobulin A nephropathy, minimal change disease, and focal segmental glomerulosclerosis accounted for most. In all, 37% of patients with steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome had focal segmental glomerulosclerosis and its relative incidence was increased when compared to previous studies. Minimal change disease and minimal change disease with mesangial immunoglobulin M deposits accounted for the majority of steroid dependent and frequent relapsers. Among patients with isolated microscopic haematuria, 73% had thin glomerular basement membrane disease, while patients with concomitant haematuria and proteinuria had a wide variety of pathology. In the kidney graft group, acute graft dysfunction was due to acute rejection in 38% of the patients, followed by calcineurin inhibitor toxicity in 14%. Chronic allograft nephropathy caused chronic allograft dysfunction in the majority of cases. Post-transplant proteinuria was caused by recurrence of the primary renal disease in all of our patients. CONCLUSION: This study provides updated epidemiological information for childhood renal disease and a change in the pattern of disease was observed.

OBJECTIVES: A total of 139 consecutive and non-duplicate bloodstream isolates of Enterobacter spp. collected from inpatients in Hong Kong during 2000-2002 were studied for production of extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs). METHODS: All isolates were evaluated by the modified double-disc synergy test (m-DDST), the combined disc method (CDM) and the three-dimensional (3D) test. The m-DDST and CDM were modified by the use of cefepime discs. beta-Lactamases were characterized by isoelectric focusing and PCR sequencing using specific primers. RESULTS: ESBLs were identified in nine isolates (overall 6.5%), including seven of 39 (17.9%) Enterobacter hormaechei, one of 27 (3.7%) Enterobacter aerogenes and the only Enterobacter intermedius strain. The E. intermedius strain was positive only in the 3D test but not in the other two tests. The other eight strains were positive in all three tests. No ESBL was detected in the other species, including non-hormaechei members of the Enterobacter cloacae complex (n=61), Enterobacter agglomerans (n=7), Enterobacter gergoviae (n=4) and Enterobacter sakazakii (n=1). The ESBL content included five different CTX-M enzymes (CTX-M-9, CTX-M-13, CTX-M-14, CTX-M-24 and a novel CTX-M-2-like beta-lactamase), SHV-12 (n=2) and unidentifiable ESBLs with a pI of 7.7 or 7.9 in two strains. The seven ESBL-producing E. hormaechei were genotyped by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis and were found to be unrelated to each other. In three of the CTX-M-producing strains, ISEcp1-like elements, including promoters for the beta-lactamase gene, were found. CONCLUSIONS: Our data underscore the diversity of CTX-M enzymes among Enterobacter spp. in Hong Kong.

In the present study, a I-D dynamic permeation of a monovalent electrolyte solution through a negatively charged-hydrated cartilaginous tissue is analyzed using the mechano-electrochemical theory developed by Lai et al. (1991) as the constitutive model for the tissue. The spatial distributions of stress, strain, fluid pressure, ion concentrations, electrical potential, ion and fluid fluxes within and across the tissue have been calculated. The dependencies of these mechanical, electrical and physicochemical responses on the tissue fixed charge density, with specified modulus, permeability, diffusion coefficients, and frequency and magnitude of pressure differential are determined. The results demonstrate that these mechanical, electrical and physicochemical fields within the tissue are intrinsically and nonlinearly coupled, and they all vary with time and depth within the tissue.

Unconfined compression test has been frequently used to study the mechanical behaviors of articular cartilage, both theoretically and experimentally. It has also been used in explant and gel-cell-complex studies in tissue engineering. In biphasic and poroelastic theories, the effect of charges fixed on the proteoglycan macromolecules in articular cartilage is embodied in the apparent compressive Young's modulus and the apparent Poisson's ratio of the tissue, and the fluid pressure is considered to be the portion above the osmotic pressure. In order to understand how proteoglycan fixed charges might affect the mechanical behaviors of articular cartilage, and in order to predict the osmotic pressure and electric fields inside the tissue in this experimental configuration, it is necessary to use a model that explicitly takes into account the charged nature of the tissue and the flow of ions within its porous interstices. In this paper, we used a finite element model based on the triphasic theory to study how fixed charges in the porous-permeable soft tissue can modulate its mechanical and electrochemical responses under a step displacement in unconfined compression. The results from finite element calculations showed that: 1) A charged tissue always supports a larger load than an uncharged tissue of the same intrinsic elastic moduli. 2) The apparent Young's modulus (the ratio of the equilibrium axial stress to the axial strain) is always greater than the intrinsic Young's modulus of an uncharged tissue. 3) The apparent Poisson's ratio (the negative ratio of the lateral strain to the axial strain) is always larger than the intrinsic Poisson's ratio of an uncharged tissue. 4) Load support derives from three sources: intrinsic matrix stiffness, hydraulic pressure and osmotic pressure. Under the unconfined compression, the Donnan osmotic pressure can constitute between 13%-22% of the total load support at equilibrium. 5) During the stress-relaxation process following the initial instant of loading, the diffusion potential (due to the gradient of the fixed charge density and the associated gradient of ion concentrations) and the streaming potential (due to fluid convection) compete against each other. Within the physiological range of material parameters, the polarity of the electric potential depends on both the mechanical properties and the fixed charge density (FCD) of the tissue. For softer tissues, the diffusion effects dominate the electromechanical response, while for stiffer tissues, the streaming potential dominates this response. 6) Fixed charges do not affect the instantaneous strain field relative to the initial equilibrium state. However, there is a sudden increase in the fluid pressure above the initial equilibrium osmotic pressure. These new findings are relevant and necessary for the understanding of cartilage mechanics, cartilage biosynthesis, electromechanical signal transduction by chondrocytes, and tissue engineering.

OBJECTIVE: To report the clinical, laboratory, and radiologic features of children with severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and to examine the difference between the younger and older age groups. DESIGN: Retrospective descriptive cohort study. SETTING: A regional hospital in Hong Kong. PATIENTS: Children younger than 18 yrs with SARS. RESULTS: Twenty-one children were included, with a mean age of 10.7 +/- 5.1 yrs. Children with SARS presented with fever, nonproductive cough, malaise, chills, headache, myalgia, and loss of appetite. Examination of the chest showed minimal auscultatory findings. Common laboratory findings included lymphopenia, thrombocytopenia, and mild elevations of activated partial thromboplastin time, alanine transaminase, lactic dehydrogenase, and creatine phosphokinase. Bacteriologic and virologic studies were all negative for common pathogens. Unilateral focal opacity was the commonest finding in chest radiography. High-resolution computerized tomography of the thorax was an early diagnostic tool if the chest radiograph was negative. The clinical course was less severe in comparison with adult patients. However, adolescents (age, > or =12 yrs) resembled adults in their clinical features. When compared with the younger age group, the adolescents had significantly higher temperatures, more constitutional upset, and a greater need for steroid treatment. Children younger than 12 yrs seemed less ill but had more coughing. On the whole, the outcome was favorable. CONCLUSION: Severe acute respiratory syndrome affects children, but the course is less severe. Nevertheless, the disease could have a significant psychosocial impact on children because of the potential seriousness of the disease in their adult family members.

Chronic HBsAg carriers are known to have a higher risk of hepatitis-related mortality and morbidity when undergoing kidney transplantation. Immunosuppressants might flare up the infection that could be fulminating. Lamivudine and mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) have been shown to be effective in inhibiting replication of hepatitis B virus (HBV). With these two drugs, hepatitis related adverse outcome might be preventable when these patients are being transplanted. Four Chinese adolescents with chronic HBV infection were transplanted in our Department from 1999 to 2001. Immunosuppresants included prednisolone, cyclosporin A and MMF; azathioprine was not used for its potentially liver toxic effect. Prophylactic lamivudine 3 mg/kg and maximum 100 mg daily was given just before transplantation and was continued afterwards. HBV status and liver enzymes were monitored serially. Patients were followed up for 26.0 +/- 10.3 (11-34) months post-transplant and no mortality was reported. All grafts were functioning and no rejection was noted. MMF and lamivudine were well tolerated. Alanine transaminase was only transiently elevated in the first 2 months post-transplant in all patients and became normal afterwards. The patients were clinically well and liver function was normal at the last follow-up. However, HBV DNA became positive in three patients after the transplantation. YMDD mutant HBV was negative in one patient and undeterminable in the other three due to low virus load. In summary, with prophylactic lamivudine and MMF, short-term follow-up showed that renal transplant might be feasible and safe in chronic HBV carriers.

An important step toward understanding signal transduction mechanisms modulating cellular activities is the accurate predictions of the mechanical and electro-chemical environment of the cells in well-defined experimental configurations. Although electro-kinetic phenomena in cartilage are well known, few studies have focused on the electric field inside the tissue. In this paper, we present some of our recent calculations of the electric field inside a layer of cartilage (with and without cells) in an open circuit one-dimensional (1D) stress relaxation experiment. The electric field inside the tissue derives from the streaming effects (streaming potential) and the diffusion effect (diffusion potential). Our results show that, for realistic cartilage material parameters, due to deformation-induced inhomogeneity of the fixed charge density, the two potentials compete against each other. For softer tissue, the diffusion potential may dominate over the streaming potential and vice versa for stiffer tissue. These results demonstrate that for proper interpretation of the mechano-electrochemical signal transduction mechanisms, one must not ignore the diffusion potential.

The main objective of this study is to determine the nature of electric fields inside articular cartilage while accounting for the effects of both streaming potential and diffusion potential. Specifically, we solve two tissue mechano-electrochemical problems using the triphasic theories developed by Lai et al. (1991, ASME J. Biomech Eng., 113, pp. 245-258) and Gu et al. (1998, ASME J. Biomech. Eng., 120, pp. 169-180) (1) the steady one-dimensional permeation problem; and (2) the transient one-dimensional ramped-displacement, confined-compression, stress-relaxation problem (both in an open circuit condition) so as to be able to calculate the compressive strain, the electric potential, and the fixed charged density (FCD) inside cartilage. Our calculations show that in these two technically important problems, the diffusion potential effects compete against the flow-induced kinetic effects (streaming potential) for dominance of the electric potential inside the tissue. For softer tissues of similar FCD (i.e., lower aggregate modulus), the diffusion potential effects are enhanced when the tissue is being compressed (i.e., increasing its FCD in a nonuniform manner) either by direct compression or by drag-induced compaction; indeed, the diffusion potential effect may dominate over the streaming potential effect. The polarity of the electric potential field is in the same direction of interstitial fluid flow when streaming potential dominates, and in the opposite direction of fluid flow when diffusion potential dominates. For physiologically realistic articular cartilage material parameters, the polarity of electric potential across the tissue on the outside (surface to surface) may be opposite to the polarity across the tissue on the inside (surface to surface). Since the electromechanical signals that chondrocytes perceive in situ are the stresses, strains, pressures and the electric field generated inside the extracellular matrix when the tissue is deformed, the results from this study offer new challenges for the understanding of possible mechanisms that control chondrocyte biosyntheses.

OBJECTIVE: The efficacy of 1 wk bismuth triple therapy is adversely influenced by the presence of metronidazole resistance. In vitro studies suggest that ranitidine bismuth citrate (RBC) plus metronidazole exhibit synergistic activity against metronidazole resistant strains of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori). Whether this confers a superior clinical efficacy remains unproven. This study compared the efficacy of RBC-based triple therapy with bismuth triple therapy in eradication of H. pylori. METHODS: Patients with H. pylori-related ulcer disease or gastritis were randomized to receive either 400/mg of RBC twice daily plus 400/mg of metronidazole and 500/mg of tetracycline four times daily for 1 wk (RMT) or 120/mg of colloidal bismuth subcitrate, 400/mg of metronidazole, and 500/mg of tetracycline, all given four times daily for 1 wk (BMT). Metronidazole susceptibility was determined by the E-test and pretreatment resistance was defined as minimum inhibitory concentration > or = 32/mg/L. RESULTS: Of 100 consecutive patients randomized, two patients were lost to follow-up in each group. Forty-three of 85 (51%) H. pylori isolates were metronidazole resistant. Per-protocol cure rate for RMT and BMT was 40 of 41 (98%) and 37 of 44 (84%), respectively (p = 0.058). Intent-to-treat cure rate for RMT and BMT was 46 of 50 and 41 of 50, respectively (92% vs 82%, p = 0.23). A significantly higher eradication of metronidazole resistant H. pylori was observed in the RMT group (25 of 25, 100%) than in the BMT group (12 of 16, 75%), (p = 0.018). Side effects observed in the two treatment groups were comparable. CONCLUSIONS: One week of RBC triple therapy with metronidazole and tetracycline is an effective anti-Helicobacter therapy. This regimen is more appropriate in areas of high prevalence of metronidazole resistance.

Using the biphasic theory for hydrated soft tissues (Mow et al., 1980) and a transversely isotropic elastic model for the solid matrix, an analytical solution is presented for the unconfined compression of cylindrical disks of growth plate tissues compressed between two rigid platens with a frictionless interface. The axisymmetric case where the plane of transverse isotropy is perpendicular to the cylindrical axis is studied, and the stress-relaxation response to imposed step and ramp displacements is solved. This solution is then used to analyze experimental data from unconfined compression stress-relaxation tests performed on specimens from bovine distal ulnar growth plate and chondroepiphysis to determine the biphasic material parameters. The transversely isotropic biphasic model provides an excellent agreement between theory and experimental results, better than was previously achieved with an isotropic model, and can explain the observed experimental behavior in unconfined compression of these tissues.

Osmotic pressure loading of articular cartilage has been customarily invoked to be equivalent to mechanical loading. In the literature, this equivalence is defined by the amount of water squeezed from the tissue, i.e. if the amount of water content lost by these two modes of loading are the same, it has been generally regarded that the two loadings are equivalent. This assumption has never been proven. Using the water content lost concept, in this paper, we derived the exact conditions under which an osmotic pressure loading of cartilage can be considered to be equivalent to a mechanical loading. However, the mechanical loading condition satisfying this equivalency criterion, i.e. an isotropic loading delivered via a porous permeable rigid platen uniformly applied all around the specimen, is not practically achievable. Moreover, even if this were achieved experimentally, the interstitial fluid pressure caused by the two loading conditions are not the same. This result has important ramifications for interpretation of experimental data from mechanical stimulations of cartilage explant studies.

A new mixture theory was developed to model the mechano-electrochemical behaviors of charged-hydrated soft tissues containing multi-electrolytes. The mixture is composed of n + 2 constituents (1 charged solid phase, 1 noncharged solvent phase, and n ion species). Results from this theory show that three types of force are involved in the transport of ions and solvent through such materials: (1) a mechanochemical force (including hydraulic and osmotic pressures); (2) an electrochemical force; and (3) an electrical force. Our results also show that three types of material coefficients are required to characterize the transport rates of these ions and solvent: (1) a hydraulic permeability; (2) mechano-electrochemical coupling coefficients; and (3) an ionic conductance matrix. Specifically, we derived the fundamental governing relationships between these forces and material coefficients to describe such mechano-electrochemical transduction effects as streaming potential, streaming current, diffusion (membrane) potential, electro-osmosis, and anomalous (negative) osmosis. As an example, we showed that the well-known formula for the resting cell membrane potential (Hodgkin and Huxley, 1952a, b) could be derived using our new n + 2 mixture model (a generalized triphasic theory). In general, the n + 2 mixture theory is consistent with and subsumes all previous theories pertaining to specific aspects of charged-hydrated tissues. In addition, our results provided the stress, strain, and fluid velocity fields within a tissue of finite thickness during a one-dimensional steady diffusion process. Numerical results were provided for the exchange of Na+ and Ca++ through the tissue. These numerical results support our hypothesis that tissue fixed charge density (CF) plays a significant role in modulating kinetics of ions and solvent transport through charged-hydrated soft tissues.
