RESUMO

Topical exposure to isopropyl alcohol has been reported in the literature to be toxic if sufficient isopropyl alcohol is absorbed (1-5). A clinical case is reported where a 48-y-old female presented with multiple unexplained cardiac and neurological deficits. The woman had developed the deficits over a 6-mo period in which she had been soaking towels with isopropyl alcohol and applying then to her skin overnight to ease arm pain she was experiencing. Cessation of the isopropyl alcohol exposure resolved her deficits within 3 d. A controlled repeat dermal exposure to isopropyl alcohol under clinical observation reproduced the deficits noted with corresponding serum and urine concentrations of isopropyl alcohol and acetone. Cessation of topical isopropyl alcohol exposure lead to subsequent resolution of all toxicities.

RESUMO

Very low density lipoproteins (VLDL) are toxic to aortic endothelial cells in vitro, and toxicity preventing activity (TxPA) inhibits this toxic effect of VLDL. Stress, an established arteriosclerosis risk factor, was examined for its effect on TxPA and on the ability of serum to protect endothelial cells from in vitro injury by VLDL. A standardized mirror tracing task with noise was administered to four healthy subjects. Blood samples were obtained at 0, 30, (stressor) 35, 50 and 80 min. Cortisol and non-esterified fatty acids increased during the stress period. TxPA significantly decreased following the stressor and had recovered by 80 min. When the ratio of non-TxPA/TxPA rose above 2, serum was no longer able to protect the cells from VLDL injury. If endothelial cells in vivo respond similarly to the endothelial cells in culture, the effect of stress on atherosclerosis may be mediated through these transient decreases in TxPA.

RESUMO

The characteristic pathophysiological changes in pre-eclampsia are thought to be related to abnormalities of the maternal vascular endothelium. We suggest that the blood components that affect the risk of such damage are very-low-density lipoproteins (VLDL), which injure the endothelium, and toxicity-preventing activity (the pl 5.6 form of plasma albumin), which protects against VLDL-induced injury.

RESUMO

Two sets of dentures, one with lingualized occlusion and the other with monoplane occlusion, were made for each of 30 edentulous patients. Sixty-seven percent of those people preferred the lingualized occlusal scheme because of improved masticatory ability, comfort, and esthetics.

RESUMO

The author's intent has been to promote a close working relationship between the dentist and the technician. Certainly, McCracken was doing that when he said that he hoped they could "work together in proper sequence to develop restorations that are biologically and mechanically sound and to produce removable partial dentures that reflect continuous progress in prosthetic dentistry". That's the secret. The dentist and the technician should work together and in proper sequence. Too often dental education and the dental profession have seemed to espouse the idea that the technician must function as an automaton in the fabrication of removable partial dentures. The practitioner of general dentistry can certainly ask for ideas and suggestions from the technician and still control the ultimate outcome. The dentist can share thoughts with the technician to ameliorate the "love-hate" relationship and still be responsible for the removable partial denture treatment.
