RESUMO

Acute pancreatitis (AP) is characterized by an inflammatory response that leads to edema and haemorrhaging of pancreatic tissue. In severe cases, it can even result in the necrosis of pancreatic tissue following activation within the pancreas. Adipokines are biologically active molecules released by adipose tissue that have a wide-ranging impact on health and disease. Adipokines are cytokines produced not only in white adipose tissue but also in the fat surrounding the pancreas, and they play a role in the body's inflammatory response. The presence of increased adipose tissue, often associated with obesity, has been linked to a heightened systemic inflammatory response in cases of AP. According to the literature, there are many adipokines. This article summarizes the role of adipokines in AP. Adipokines could be promising biomarkers for both diagnostic and new therapeutic treatment strategies in AP. However, a deeper knowledge of the signaling pathways of adipokines and their potential therapeutic role in AP is necessary.

RESUMO

Various studies have reported the association between cardiac markers and hepatic disorders. The main objective of this review article was to elucidate the significance of important cardiac indicators such as ischemia-modified albumin, cardiac troponin, cardiac natriuretic peptides, creatine kinase, creatine kinase-MB, lactate dehydrogenase, heart-type fatty acid-binding protein, osteopontin, soluble suppression of tumorigenicity 2, C-reactive protein, and lipoprotein(a) in the development of hepatic disorders. In addition, it highlighted recent notable discoveries and accomplishments in this field and identified areas requiring further investigation, ongoing discussions, and potential avenues for future research. Early identification and control of these cardiac markers might be helpful to control the prevalence of hepatic disorders associated with cardiovascular diseases.

RESUMO

Background: To our knowledge, the mutual involvement of a variety of metabolic and renal biomarkers and vitamin D (determined as 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D]) in postmenopausal women has not been examined yet. Therefore, we aimed to explore such a relationship by a thorough statistical multimarker approach. Methods: A total of 150 (diabetes and cardiovascular disease-free) postmenopausal women were included. Anthropometric and biochemical parameters were measured. The fatty liver index (FLI) and Homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) were calculated. Univariate and multivariate binary logistic regression analyses were used to test the predictions of cardiometabolic markers for [25(OH)D] status. Principal component analysis (PCA) was applied to explore the effect of examined biomarkers on [25(OH)D] status.

RESUMO

In parallel with the rapid growth of obesity, there is also an increase in the prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) worldwide. Due to its complications, cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death in those patients. In the last two decades, special attention has been given to oxidative stress and inflammation, as the underlying mechanisms related to T2D occurrence and progression. Moreover, micro-ribonucleic acids (miRNAs) as new genetic biomarkers take an important place in the investigation of different metabolic pathways of insulin signaling. In this review article, we discuss microRNA modulation with oxidative stress and inflammation in patients with T2D. Better insight into the novel potential therapeutic targets for treatment of diabetes and its complications is of utmost importance for public health.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The main purpose of this study was to analyze the characteristics of dyspepsia and contributing factors in Montenegrin maintenance hemodialysis patients. METHODS: The study included 43 patients undergoing hemodialysis with symptoms of dyspepsia and 40 control dyspeptic subjects with preserved kidney function. All subjects underwent an interview about dyspeptic symptoms, physical and biochemical examination, and upper gastrointestinal endoscopy with pathohistological analysis of biopsy specimens. RESULTS: Early satiety, bloating and heartburn were the most common symptoms in hemodialysis patients but without significant difference in frequency in relation to controls. Chronic kidney disease patients had statistically lower concentration of total proteins and albumin (p < 0.001), as well lower BMI values (p = 0.002). Despite this, no significant correlation of laboratory parameters with dyspeptic symptoms was found. Pathohistological examination indicated that the most common finding in hemodialysis patients was chronic active gastritis (58%), while chronic atrophic gastritis was significantly more common in dialytic patients (p = 0.032). Patients on hemodialysis had more frequently atrophy of corpus mucosa, which was positively related to dialysis duration (p = 0.001) and negatively related to pH values (p = 0.004) and bicarbonate concentration (p = 0.049). Helicobacter pylori was considerably more common in patients who underwent shorter time on hemodialysis (p < 0.001) and had higher values of bicarbonate (p = 0.037). CONCLUSION: Maintenance hemodialysis patients are at risk for chronic gastric diseases that correlated with both dialysis vintage and duration.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Systemic inflammation in colorectal cancer (CRC) may be reflected by neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and mean platelet volume (MPV). This study was designed to investigate the efficiency of preoperative NLR, PLR, and MVP as a tool for the assessment of tumor characteristics in newly diagnosed patients with CRC. PATIENTS AND METHODS: For 300 patients and 300 healthy volunteers, complete blood counts with automated differential counts were performed. The NLR was calculated by dividing the absolute neutrophil count by the absolute lymphocyte count; PLR was calculated by dividing the absolute platelet count by the absolute lymphocyte count. The diagnostic performance of NLR, PLR, and MVP was estimated by ROC curve. RESULTS: ROC curve analysis showed high diagnostic efficacy of NLR and PLR in CRC patients with cut-off values of 2.15 (AUC = 0.790, 95% CI 0.736-0.884, Se = 74.1%, and Sp = 73%) and 123 (AUC = 0.846, 95% CI 0.801-0.891, Se = 73.5%, and Sp = 80%) compared to healthy controls, respectively. The diagnostic efficacy of three combined markers was superior compared with individual markers (AUC = 0.904, 95% CI 0.812-0.989, Se = 96%, and Sp = 70%). CONCLUSION: NRL, PLR, and MPV may be useful markers in diagnostic and early recognition of different stages of CRC; additionally combined all together have stronger diagnostic efficacy.
