RESUMO

Isomer spectroscopy of heavy neutron-rich nuclei beyond the N=126 closed shell has been performed for the first time at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory of the RIKEN Nishina Center. New millisecond isomers have been identified at low excitation energies, 985.3(19) keV in ^{213}Tl and 874(5) keV in ^{215}Tl. The measured half-lives of 1.34(5) ms in ^{213}Tl and 3.0(3) ms in ^{215}Tl suggest spins and parities 11/2^{-} with the single proton-hole configuration πh_{11/2} as leading component. They are populated via E1 transitions by the decay of higher-lying isomeric states with proposed spin and parity 17/2^{+}, interpreted as arising from a single πs_{1/2} proton hole coupled to the 8^{+} seniority isomer in the ^{A+1}Pb cores. The lowering of the 11/2^{-} states is ascribed to an increase of the πh_{11/2} proton effective single-particle energy as the second νg_{9/2} orbital is filled by neutrons, owing to a significant reduction of the proton-neutron monopole interaction between the πh_{11/2} and νg_{9/2} orbitals. The new ms isomers provide the first experimental observation of shell evolution in the almost unexplored N>126 nuclear region below doubly magic ^{208}Pb.

RESUMO

The first complete measurement of the ß-decay strength distribution of _{17}^{45}Cl_{28} was performed at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) with the FRIB Decay Station Initiator during the second FRIB experiment. The measurement involved the detection of neutrons and γ rays in two focal planes of the FRIB Decay Station Initiator in a single experiment for the first time. This enabled an analytical consistency in extracting the ß-decay strength distribution over the large range of excitation energies, including neutron unbound states. We observe a rapid increase in the ß-decay strength distribution above the neutron separation energy in _{18}^{45}Ar_{27}. This was interpreted to be caused by the transitioning of neutrons into protons excited across the Z=20 shell gap. The SDPF-MU interaction with reduced shell gap best reproduced the data. The measurement demonstrates a new approach that is sensitive to the proton shell gap in neutron rich nuclei according to SDPF-MU calculations.

RESUMO

Potassium-40 is a widespread, naturally occurring isotope whose radioactivity impacts subatomic rare-event searches, nuclear structure theory, and estimated geological ages. A predicted electron-capture decay directly to the ground state of argon-40 has never been observed. The KDK (potassium decay) collaboration reports strong evidence of this rare decay mode. A blinded analysis reveals a nonzero ratio of intensities of ground-state electron-captures (I_{EC^{0}}) over excited-state ones (I_{EC^{*}}) of I_{EC^{0}}/I_{EC^{*}}=0.0095±[over stat]0.0022±[over sys]0.0010 (68% C.L.), with the null hypothesis rejected at 4σ. In terms of branching ratio, this signal yields I_{EC^{0}}=0.098%±[over stat]0.023%±[over sys]0.010%, roughly half of the commonly used prediction, with consequences for various fields [27L. RESUMO

New half-lives for exotic isotopes approaching the neutron drip-line in the vicinity of N∼28 for Z=12-15 were measured at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) with the FRIB decay station initiator. The first experimental results are compared to the latest quasiparticle random phase approximation and shell-model calculations. Overall, the measured half-lives are consistent with the available theoretical descriptions and suggest a well-developed region of deformation below ^{48}Ca in the N=28 isotones. The erosion of the Z=14 subshell closure in Si is experimentally confirmed at N=28, and a reduction in the ^{38}Mg half-life is observed as compared with its isotopic neighbors, which does not seem to be predicted well based on the decay energy and deformation trends. This highlights the need for both additional data in this very exotic region, and for more advanced theoretical efforts.

RESUMO

Precise antineutrino measurements are very sensitive to proper background characterization. We present an improved measurement of the ^{13}C(α,n)^{16}O reaction cross section which constitutes significant background for large ν[over ¯] detectors. We greatly improve the precision and accuracy by utilizing a setup that is sensitive to the neutron energies while making measurements of the excited state transitions via secondary γ-ray detection. Our results shows a 54% reduction in the background contributions from the ^{16}O(3^{-},6.13 MeV) state used in the KamLAND analysis.

The excitation functions for quasielastic scattering of ^{22}Ne+^{248}Cm, ^{26}Mg+^{248}Cm, and ^{48}Ca+^{238}U are measured using a gas-filled recoil ion separator. The quasielastic barrier distributions are extracted for these systems and are compared with coupled-channel calculations. The results indicate that the barrier distribution is affected dominantly by deformation of the actinide target nuclei, but also by vibrational or rotational excitations of the projectile nuclei, as well as neutron transfer processes before capture. From a comparison between the experimental barrier distributions and the evaporation residue cross sections for Sg (Z=106), Hs (108), Cn (112), and Lv (116), it is suggested that the hot fusion reactions take advantage of a compact collision, where the projectile approaches along the short axis of a prolately deformed nucleus. A new method is proposed to estimate the optimum incident energy to synthesize unknown superheavy nuclei using the barrier distribution.

RESUMO

Detection of nuclear-decay γ rays provides a sensitive thermometer of nova nucleosynthesis. The most intense γ-ray flux is thought to be annihilation radiation from the ß^{+} decay of ^{18}F, which is destroyed prior to decay by the ^{18}F(p,α)^{15}O reaction. Estimates of ^{18}F production had been uncertain, however, because key near-threshold levels in the compound nucleus, ^{19}Ne, had yet to be identified. We report the first measurement of the ^{19}F(^{3}He,tγ)^{19}Ne reaction, in which the placement of two long-sought 3/2^{+} levels is suggested via triton-γ-γ coincidences. The precise determination of their resonance energies reduces the upper limit of the rate by a factor of 1.5-17 at nova temperatures and reduces the average uncertainty on the nova detection probability by a factor of 2.1.

We report the results of a ß-decay study of fission products ^{86}Br, ^{89}Kr, ^{89}Rb, ^{90gs}Rb, ^{90m}Rb, ^{90}Kr, ^{92}Rb, ^{139}Xe, and ^{142}Cs performed with the Modular Total Absorption Spectrometer (MTAS) and on-line mass-separated ion beams. These radioactivities were assessed by the Nuclear Energy Agency as having high priority for decay heat analysis during a nuclear fuel cycle. We observe a substantial increase in ß feeding to high excited states in all daughter isotopes in comparison to earlier data. This increases the average γ-ray energy emitted by the decay of fission fragments during the first 10 000 s after fission of ^{235}U and ^{239}Pu by approximately 2% and 1%, respectively, improving agreement between results of calculations and direct observations. New MTAS results reduce the reference reactor ν[over ¯]_{e} flux used to analyze reactor ν[over ¯]_{e} interaction with detector matter. The reduction determined by the ab initio method for the four nuclear fuel components, ^{235}U, ^{238}U, ^{239}Pu, and ^{241}Pu, amounts to 0.976, 0.986, 0.983, and 0.984, respectively.

The ^{19}Ne(p,γ)^{20}Na reaction is the second step of a reaction chain which breaks out from the hot CNO cycle, following the ^{15}O(α,γ)^{19}Ne reaction at the onset of x-ray burst events. We investigate the spectrum of the lowest proton-unbound states in ^{20}Na in an effort to resolve contradictions in spin-parity assignments and extract reliable information about the thermal reaction rate. The proton-transfer reaction ^{19}Ne(d,n)^{20}Na is measured with a beam of the radioactive isotope ^{19}Ne at an energy around the Coulomb barrier and in inverse kinematics. We observe three proton resonances with the ^{19}Ne ground state, at 0.44, 0.66, and 0.82 MeV c.m. energies, which are assigned 3^{+}, 1^{+}, and (0^{+}), respectively. In addition, we identify two resonances with the first excited state in ^{19}Ne, one at 0.20 MeV and one, tentatively, at 0.54 MeV. These observations allow us for the first time to experimentally quantify the astrophysical reaction rate on an excited nuclear state. Our experiment shows an efficient path for thermal proton capture in ^{19}Ne(p,γ)^{20}Na, which proceeds through ground state and excited-state capture in almost equal parts and eliminates the possibility for this reaction to create a bottleneck in the breakout from the hot CNO cycle.

We report total absorption spectroscopy measurements of ^{92}Rb, ^{96gs}Y, and ^{142}Cs ß decays, which are the most important contributors to the high energy ν[over ¯]_{e} spectral shape in nuclear reactors. These three ß decays contribute 43% of the ν[over ¯]_{e} flux near 5.5 MeV emitted by nuclear reactors. This ν[over ¯]_{e} energy is particularly interesting due to spectral features recently observed in several experiments including the Daya Bay, Double Chooz, and RENO Collaborations. Measurements were conducted at Oak Ridge National Laboratory by means of proton-induced fission of ^{238}U with on-line mass separation of fission fragments and the Modular Total Absorption Spectrometer. We observe a ß-decay pattern that is similar to recent measurements of ^{92}Rb, with a ground-state to ground-state ß feeding of 91(3)%. We verify the ^{96gs}Y ground-state to ground-state ß feeding of 95.5(20)%. Our measurements substantially modify the ß-decay feedings of ^{142}Cs, reducing the ß feeding to ^{142}Ba states below 2 MeV by 32% when compared with the latest evaluations. Our results increase the discrepancy between the observed and the expected reactor ν[over ¯]_{e} flux between 5 and 7 MeV, the maximum excess increases from ∼10% to ∼12%.

The ß-delayed neutron emission of ^{83,84}Ga isotopes was studied using the neutron time-of-flight technique. The measured neutron energy spectra showed emission from states at excitation energies high above the neutron separation energy and previously not observed in the ß decay of midmass nuclei. The large decay strength deduced from the observed intense neutron emission is a signature of Gamow-Teller transformation. This observation was interpreted as evidence for allowed ß decay to ^{78}Ni core-excited states in ^{83,84}Ge favored by shell effects. We developed shell model calculations in the proton fpg_{9/2} and neutron extended fpg_{9/2}+d_{5/2} valence space using realistic interactions that were used to understand measured ß-decay lifetimes. We conclude that enhanced, concentrated ß-decay strength for neutron-unbound states may be common for very neutron-rich nuclei. This leads to intense ß-delayed high-energy neutron and strong multineutron emission probabilities that in turn affect astrophysical nucleosynthesis models.

AIMS: To investigate inactivation effect and mechanism of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) activity against Campylobacter jejuni biofilms. METHODS AND RESULTS: ZnO NPs with concentrations of 0, 0·6, 1·2 and 6 mmol l(-1) were employed in antimicrobial tests against Camp. jejuni planktonic cells and biofilms. Campylobacter jejuni sessile cells in biofilms were more resistant to a low concentration of ZnO NPs when compared to planktonic cells. The ZnO NPs penetrated the extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) without damage to the EPS and directly interacted with the sessile bacterial cells, as determined using infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Raman spectroscopy shows alterations in quinone structures and damage to nucleic acids following Camp. jejuni treatment with ZnO NPs. The mechanism of DNA damage is most likely due to the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Spectroscopic-based partial least squares regression (PLSR) models could predict the number of surviving sessile cell numbers within a bacterial biofilm (≥log 4 CFU, root mean square error of estimation <0·36) from Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectral measurements. CONCLUSIONS: ZnO NPs were found to have antimicrobial activity against Camp. jejuni biofilms. ZnO NPs penetrated the biofilm EPS within 1 h without damaging it and interacted directly with sessile cells in biofilms. Alterations in the DNA/RNA bases, which are owing to the generation of ROS, appear to result in Camp. jejuni cell death. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: ZnO NPs may offer a realistic strategy to eliminate Camp. jejuni biofilms in the environment.

The aim of this study was to investigate the potential of using Al-Holy-Rasco (AR) medium, a novel broth for detection and isolation of Cronobacter spp. in infant formula milk (IFM). The new medium's composition is generic brain heart infusion broth with the addition of 1% NaCl, 15% sucrose, and 0.80 g/liter sodium deoxycholate as selective ingredients. AR broth outperformed Enterobacteriaceae enrichment broth (EE), Enterobacter sakazakii enrichment broth (ESE), modified lauryl sulfate broth, and milk as enrichment media to stimulate the growth of a cocktail of 10 strains of Cronobacter. Additionally, AR broth significantly suppressed the growth of competing non-Cronobacter Enterobacteriaceae as compared with EE, ESE, modified lauryl sulfate broth, and milk. The recovery of desiccated Cronobacter (1 to 5,000 CFU/100 g) from powdered IFM in the presence of competing non-Cronobacter Enterobacteriaceae was determined by EE, ESE, and AR broth with 10 and 15% sucrose. AR broth with 15% sucrose outperformed all other examined broths and recovered Cronobacter from all samples tested at all Cronobacter concentrations. AR broth must be validated before it can be used for rapid detection and isolation of Cronobacter from powdered IFM.

Fresh and dried raspberries prepared by freeze drying (FD), microwave-vacuum (MIVAC), hot-air drying (HAD), and a combination of hot-air drying and microwave-vacuum (HAD/MIVAC) drying methods were evaluated for polyphenol retention, total polyphenol and anthocyanin contents, total antioxidant capacity, and antiadipogenic activity (the inhibition of fat cell development). Ellagic acid and quercetin were present in the largest concentrations in fresh and dehydrated raspberries. Dehydration led to a loss of polyphenols and anthocyanins and antioxidant capacity. Polyphenols (aglycone form) were retained in the greatest amount: 20% (freeze dried) to 30% (HAD/MIVAC) (fresh = 100%). A total of 30% of polyphenols (glycoside form) were retained in raspberries dried by the HAD/MIVAC methods with 5% of retention observed for raspberries dried by FD, HAD, or MIVAC. FD and MIVAC resulted in higher retention of anthocyanins (aglycone form) than other drying methods. It was also observed that antioxidant activity was reduced by dehydration. Adipogenesis was inhibited by polyphenolic glycosides (30%) and aglycones (30% to 40%) in fresh and HAD/MIVAC raspberries. Extracts from dried raspberries by HAD/MIVAC methods were relatively more effective at inhibiting adipogenesis compared to HAD and FD dried raspberries.

Visible and short wavelength near-infrared diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (600 to 1,100 nm) was evaluated as a technique for detecting and monitoring spoilage of pasteurized skim milk at 3 storage temperatures (6, 21, and 37 degrees C) over 3 to 30 h (control, t = 0 h; n = 3). Spectra, total aerobic plate count, and pH were obtained, with a total of 60 spectra acquired per sample. Multivariate statistical procedures, including principal component analysis, soft independent modeling of class analogy, and partial least squares calibration models were developed for predicting the degree of milk spoilage. Principal component analysis showed apparent clustering and segregation of milk samples that were stored at different time intervals. Milk samples that were stored for 30 h or less at different temperatures were noticeably separated from control and distinctly clustered. Soft independent modeling of class analogy analysis could correctly classify 88 to 93% of spectra of incubated samples from control at 30 h. A partial least squares model with 5 latent variables correlating spectral features with bacterial counts and pH yielded a correlation coefficient (R = 0.99 and 0.99) and a standard error of prediction (0.34 log(10) cfu/mL and 0.031 pH unit), respectively. It may be feasible to use short wavelength near-infrared spectroscopy to detect and monitor milk spoilage rapidly and noninvasively by correlating changes in spectral features with the level of bacterial proliferation and milk spoilage.

Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy (4000 to 600 cm(-1)) was utilized to detect sublethally heat-injured microorganisms: Salmonella enterica serotype Typhimurium ATCC 14028, a Gram-negative bacterium, and Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 19113, a Gram-positive bacterium. A range of heat treatments (N= 2) at 60 degrees C were evaluated: 0D (control), 2D, 4D, 6D, and 8D using a D(60 degrees C) (S. enterica serotype Typhimurium ATCC 14028 = 0.30 min, L. monocytogenes ATCC 19113 = 0.43 min). The mechanism of cell injury appeared to be different for Gram-negative and Gram-positive microbes as observed from differences in the 2nd derivative transformations and loadings plot of bacterial spectra following heat treatment. The loadings for PC1 and PC2 confirmed that the amide I and amide II bands were the major contribution to spectral variation, with relatively small contributions from C-H deformations, the antisymmetric P==O stretching modes of the phosphodiester nucleic acid backbone, and the C-O-C stretching modes of polysaccharides. Using soft independent modeling of class analogy (SIMCA), the extent of injury could be predicted correctly at least 83% of the time. Partial least squares (PLS) calibration analysis was constructed using 5 latent variables for predicting the bacterial counts for survivors of the different heat treatments and yielded a high correlation coefficient (R= 0.97 [S. enterica serotype Typhimurium] and 0.98 [L. monocytogenes]) and a standard error of prediction (SEP= 0.51 [S. enterica serotype Typhimurium] and 0.39 log(10) CFU/mL [L. monocytogenes]), indicating that the degree of heat injury could be predicted.

The dielectric properties must be defined to design efficient radio frequency (RF) and microwave (MW) processes by the food manufacturers. The objective of this study was to understand how frequency, temperature, and muscle fiber orientation influence the dielectric properties. The eye of round (Semitendinosus) muscle was selected because it contains large, relatively uniform muscle cells with similar muscle fiber orientation and relatively uniform chemical composition throughout the tissue. Dielectric properties were measured using an open-ended coaxial probe technique at 27, 915, and 1800 MHz and temperatures between -5 and 130 degrees C. Power penetration depth was calculated. Since many commercially prepared, thermally processed, ready-to-eat entrees are made with frozen meat, dielectric property measurements were started from -5 degrees C. The dielectric constant and dielectric loss factors were often higher for muscle with the muscle fiber measured in a parallel orientation to the probe compared to samples of the same treatment (for example, fresh or frozen) in a perpendicular tissue orientation at the same frequency and temperature. Dielectric constant and loss values for frozen beef tended to be higher than fresh beef at the same temperature and frequency. Tissue orientation appeared to have a greater effect on dielectric loss values at lower frequencies. Penetration depth tended to be greater when the direction of propagation was perpendicular to the muscle fiber.

AIMS: This study was conducted to validate combined heat and acid treatments for inactivating Escherichia coli O157:H7, Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella typhimurium in an acidified brine containing, or pickled, asparagus model food. METHODS AND RESULTS: A mixture of three strains of E. coli O157:H7, L. monocytogenes and S. typhimurium were inoculated onto pickled asparagus samples. Combinations of various concentrations of acetic acid [0%, 0.25%, 0.5%, 0.75%, 1%, 1.5% and 2% (v/v)] and various temperatures (40 degrees C, 50 degrees C, 60 degrees C and 75 degrees C) were investigated. Following treatment, asparagus samples were stored at room temperature and enumerated at 0, 0.5, 1, 2 and 3 days. Heat and acetic acid treatments were synergistic. The inhibitory effects of these combined treatments on the tested foodborne pathogens were also effective during storage. Loss of green colour in the pickled asparagus significantly increased with increasing concentrations of acetic acid. CONCLUSIONS: Using a combination of mild heat and acetic acid treatments can successfully control E. coli O157:H7, L. monocytogenes and S. typhimurium in pickled asparagus, combinations of heat and acid are synergistic and effective treatments can be selected to reduce adverse effect on colour which occur during product storage. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: Mild heating plus acetic acid treatment are synergistic, so combined treatments can be developed, which would lower the temperature and amount of acetic acid required for minimally processed vegetables while maintaining pathogen control.

The effect of nisin or citric acid or combinations of these two inhibitors on the inactivation of a cocktail of three Listeria innocua strains was investigated in a model brain heart infusion (BHI) broth and hummus (chickpea dip). In BHI broth, citric acid had a limited ability to inhibit L. innocua growth. Nisin initially reduced L. innocua concentrations by about 3 log cycles; however, L. innocua reached concentrations similar to those of the control after 5 days at 22 degrees C. In combination, the effects of 500 IU/ml nisin and 0.2% citric acid were synergistic and resulted in complete elimination of L. innocua in the BHI broth. The inhibition of L. innocua by nisin (500 or 1,000 IU/g), citric acid (0.1, 0.2, or 0.3%), or their combinations also was evaluated in hummus. Citric acid alone did not affect L. innocua growth or the aerobic bacterial plate count. A combination of 1,000 IU/g nisin and 0.3% citric acid was somewhat effective (approximately 1.5-log reduction) in controlling the concentration of L. innocua and the aerobic plate count for up to 6 days. This combination also may be useful, in addition to proper hygienic practices, for minimizing the growth of the pathogen Listeria monocytogenes in hummus.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of nisin in combination with heat or antimicrobial chemical treatments (such as lactic acid, chlorous acid, and sodium hypochlorite) on the inhibition of Listeria monocytogenes and total mesophiles in sturgeon (Acipenser transmontanus) caviar. The effects of nisin (250, 500, 750, and 1,000 IU/ml), lactic acid (1, 2, and 3%), chlorous acid (134 and 268 ppm), sodium hypochlorite (150 and 300 ppm), and heat at 60 degrees C for 3 min were evaluated for a five-strain mixture of L. monocytogenes and total mesophiles in sturgeon caviar containing 3.5% salt. Selected combinations of these antimicrobial treatments were also tested. Injured and viable L. monocytogenes cells were recovered using an overlay method. Treating caviar with > or =500 IU/ml nisin initially reduced L. monocytogenes by 2 to 2.5 log units. Chlorous acid (268 ppm) reduced L. monocytogenes from 7.7 log units to undetectable (<0.48 log units) after 4 days of storage at 4 degrees C. However, there were no synergistic effects observed for combinations of nisin (500 or 750 IU/ml) plus either lactic acid or chlorous acid. Lactic acid caused a slight reduction (approximately 1 log unit) in the microbial load during a 6-day period at 4 degrees C. Sodium hypochlorite was ineffective at the levels tested. Mild heating (60 degrees C for 3 min) with nisin synergistically reduced viable counts of L. monocytogenes and total mesophiles. No L. monocytogenes cells (<0.48 log units) were recovered from caviar treated with heat and nisin (750 IU/ml) after a storage period of 28 days at 4 degrees C.
