Olive oils from seven Portuguese regions were selected to study the effect of the geographical origin on the oils' composition. Quality parameters, fatty acids, tocopherols, hydroxytyrosol and tyrosol derivatives, and oxidative stability were evaluated. All olive oils could be classified as extra virgin, and the geographical origin significantly affected the oils chemical composition. Principal component analysis further confirmed the significant impact of the geographical origin on the composition and, indirectly, on stability of the oils, showing that the evaluated parameters could be used as markers for geographical origin identification. Alternatively, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was applied, allowing to establish a linear discriminant model that correctly identified the geographical origin of the olive oils with a mean sensitivity of 99 ± 3 % (internal validation), confirming the impact of the oil origin on its characteristics. This finding allowed foreseeing the future application of the spectroscopy approach as a green, fast and non-invasive authentication tool.

Developing biodegradable active films has been a promising green approach to overcoming global concerns over the environmental pollution and human health caused by plastic utilization. This study aimed to develop active films based on chitosan (CS), produced from waste crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) shells enriched with bioactive extract (5-20%) of propolis (PS) and to characterize its properties, envisaging food packaging applications. The chromatographic profile of PS extract confirmed its richness, with 41 phenolic compounds. With increasing extract addition to the chitosan, the thickness of the films increased from 61.7 to 71.7 µm, causing a reduction in the light transmission rate, along with a greenish colour shift. The interactions between PS extract and CS was confirmed by infrared spectroscopy, at the same time that the microstructural integrity of the films was checked on the scanning electron microscopy micrographs. The findings also showed that addition of PS enhanced the films thermal stability and mechanical properties e.g., tensile modulus, yield strength, and stress at break. Besides, it improved the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. Overall, CS-based composite films seem a promising green alternative to petroleum-based synthetic plastics allowing to extend the shelf life of food products due to their eco-friendly nature.

Pickering emulsions, which are emulsions stabilized by colloidal particles, are being increasingly positioned as novel strategies to develop innovative food product solutions. In this context, the present work aims to develop Pickering emulsions stabilized by natural-based curcumin-loaded particles produced by the solid dispersion technique as promising mayonnaise-like food sauce alternatives. Two particle formulations (KC1 and KC2) were produced using k-carrageenan as the matrix material and different curcumin contents, then employed in the preparation of three Pickering emulsion formulations comprising different oil fractions (φ) and particle concentrations (KC1 φ 0.4 (4.7%), KC2 φ 0.4 (4.7%) and KC2 φ 0.6 (4.0%)). The creaming index tests accompanied by the optical microscopy analysis evidenced the good stability of the developed products for the tested period of 28 days. The final products were tested concerning color attributes, pH, oxidative stability, textural, and nutritional composition, and compared with two commercial mayonnaises (traditional and light products). Overall, the produced emulsions were characterized by a bright yellow color (an appealing attribute for consumers), an acidic pH (similar to mayonnaise), and a considerably improved oxidative stability, implying a foreseeable longer shelf life. The sauce KC1 φ 0.4 (4.7%) showed a similar texture to the light commercial mayonnaise, being a promising alternative to conventional sauces, holding a low-fat content and potentially added benefits due to the curcumin and virgin olive oil intrinsic properties.

Microencapsulation procedures have recently focused attention on designing novel microspheres via green synthesis strategies. The use of chitosan (CS) as an encapsulating material has increased interest due to its unique bioactive properties and the various crosslinking possibilities offered by their functional groups. The consolidation of the microspheres by physical crosslinking using sodium tripolyphosphate (TPP) combined with chemical crosslinking using vanillin (VA) open new opportunities in the framework of green dual crosslinking strategies. The developed strategy, a straightforward technique based on an aqueous medium avoiding complex separation/washing steps, offers advantages over the processes based on VA, mostly using water-in-oil emulsion approaches. Thus, in this work, the combination of TPP crosslinking (3, 5, and 10 wt.%) via spray-coagulation technique with two VA crosslinking methods (in situ and post-treatment using 1 wt.% VA) were employed in the preparation of microspheres. The microspheres were characterized concerning morphology, particle size, physicochemical properties, thermal stability, and swelling behavior. Results revealed that the combination of 5 wt.% TPP with in situ VA crosslinking led to microspheres with promising properties, being an attractive alternative for natural bioactives encapsulation due to the green connotations associated with the process.

Polyurethanes and polyurethane-ureas, particularly their water-based dispersions, have gained relevance as an extremely versatile area based on environmentally friendly approaches. The evolution of their synthesis methods, and the nature of the reactants (or compounds involved in the process) towards increasingly sustainable pathways, has positioned these dispersions as a relevant and essential product for diverse application frameworks. Therefore, in this work, it is intended to show the progress in the field of polyurethane and polyurethane-urea dispersions over decades, since their initial synthesis approaches. Thus, the review covers from the basic concepts of polyurethane chemistry to the evolution of the dispersion's preparation strategies. Moreover, an analysis of the recent trends of using renewable reactants and enhanced green strategies, including the current legislation, directed to limit the toxicity and potentiate the sustainability of dispersions, is described. The review also highlights the strengths of the dispersions added with diverse renewable additives, namely, cellulose, starch or chitosan, providing some noteworthy results. Similarly, dispersion's potential to be processed by diverse methods is shown, evidencing, with different examples, their suitability in a variety of scenarios, outstanding their versatility even for high requirement applications.

As an alternative to conventional plastic-waste treatments, herein, we report a pyrolytic plastic-recovery process in which diverse compounds and materials are recovered from the pyrolysis oil obtained from the plastic waste. Distillation of the pyrolysis oil led to a bitumen and a distilled fraction. The composition of the bitumen, as determined by saturate, aromatic, resin, and asphaltene (S.A.R.A.) analysis and corroborated by Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, was found to principally contain aromatics (55.05 wt%) and saturates (33.41 wt%), and has great potential as a modifier for bitumen mixtures by decreasing the viscosities or softening points of final products. The distilled fraction was characterised and compared to pyrolysis oil in terms of its physicochemical properties and composition. Analysis by gas-chromatography/mass-spectrometry (GC-MS) revealed high levels of aromatics, namely styrene, benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and α-methylstyrene, which are potentially recoverable base compounds for industrial use. With this in mind, the distillate was subjected to various processes, including aromatic extraction with sulfolane and subsequent fractional distillation to recover the principal compounds in the various GC-MS fractions. Fraction 1 was found to be rich in ethylbenzene and toluene, while fraction 2 contained 73.26 wt% styrene and was used to synthesise recycled polystyrene (PS), whose yield and molecular weight (Mw) were optimised by adjusting the initiator concentration, temperature, and time. The optimised recycled PS was characterised to provide a yield of 77.64% and a Mw higher than 53,000 g/mol; this recycled PS exhibited similar thermal properties to those of conventional PS prepared using petrochemical sources.

Water-in-oil (W/O) emulsions have high potential for several industrial areas as delivery systems of hydrophilic compounds. In general, they are less studied than oil-in-water (O/W) systems, namely in what concerns the so-called fluid systems, partly due to problems of instability. In this context, this work aimed to produce stable W/O emulsions from a natural oil, sweet almond oil, to be further tested as vehicles of natural hydrophilic extracts, here exemplified with an aqueous cinnamon extract. Firstly, a base W/O emulsion using a high-water content (40/60, v/v) was developed by testing different mixtures of emulsifiers, namely Tween 80 combined with Span 80 or Span 85 at different contents. Among the tested systems, the one using a 54/46 (v/v) Span 80/Tween 80 mixture, and subjected to 12 high-pressure homogenizer (HPH) cycles, revealed to be stable up to 6 months, being chosen for the subsequent functionalization tests with cinnamon extract (1.25-5%; w/v; water-basis). The presence of cinnamon extract leaded to changes in the microstructure as well as in the stability. The antimicrobial and antioxidant analysis were evidenced, and a sustained behavior compatible with an extract distribution within the two phases, oil and water, in particular for the higher extract concentration, was observed.

Replacing synthetic surfactants by natural alternatives when formulating nanoemulsions has gained attention as a sustainable approach. In this context, nanoemulsions based on sweet almond oil and stabilized by saponin from Quillaja bark with glycerol as cosurfactant were prepared by the high-pressure homogenization method. The effects of oil/water (O/W) ratio, total surfactant amount, and saponin/glycerol ratio on their stability were analyzed. The formation and stabilization of the oil-in-water nanoemulsions were analyzed through the evaluation of stability over time, pH, zeta potential, and particle size distribution analysis. Moreover, a design of experiments was performed to assess the most suitable composition based on particle size and stability parameters. The prepared nanoemulsions are, in general, highly stable over time, showing zeta potential values lower than -40 mV, a slight acid behavior due to the character of the components, and particle size (in volume) in the range of 1.1 to 4.3 µm. Response surface methodology revealed that formulations using an O/W ratio of 10/90 and 1.5 wt% surfactant resulted in lower particle sizes and zeta potential, presenting higher stability. The use of glycerol did not positively affect the formulations, which reinforces the suitability of preparing highly stable nanoemulsions based on natural surfactants such as saponins.

Starch-based hydrogels were performed by Diels-Alder cross-linking reactions between furan-modified starch and a water soluble bismaleimide, with improving conducting properties by using graphene layers as active nanofillers. The characterization results demonstrated that the Diels-Alder reaction and the corresponding conditions for the hydrogel formation were appropriate. The effect of increasing the furan/maleimide ratio on the architecture of the hydrogels and on the morphological, rheological and swelling properties were thoroughly evaluated. Effective network structure was obtained by increasing the cross-linker content leading to decreasing pore size and increasing storage modulus value of the final material. It was shown that the swelling behavior of hydrogels was mainly governed by the hydrophilic character of bismaleimide. Graphene nanosheets were added for the synthesis of nanocomposite hydrogel and it was characterized in terms of rheological properties, electrical conductivity and antimicrobial activity. The nanocomposite hydrogel presented enhanced mechanical performance, antimicrobial activity and increased conductivity values, up to a decade, indicating that conductive and active hydrogels could be satisfactory obtained, for a large range of potential applications such as biomed.

Electrospinning offers the possibility of obtaining fibers mats from polymer solutions. The use of environmentally-friendly waterborne polyurethane (WBPU) allows obtaining electrospun polyurethane mats in water medium. Furthermore, the incorporation of water dispersible nanoentities, like renewable cellulose nanocrystals (CNC), is facilitated. Therefore, in this work, a WBPU was synthesized and CNC were isolated for preparing WBPU-CNC dispersions nanocomposites with 1 and 3wt% of CNC following both the classical mixing by sonication, and the innovative in-situ route. The dispersions were used for obtaining electrospun mats assisted by poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) as polymer template. Moreover, the extraction of PEO with water resulted in continuous WBPU-CNC mats, showing different properties respect to WBPU-CNC mats containing PEO. The effective addition of CNC led to more defined cylindrical morphologies and the two alternative incorporation routes induced to different CNC dispositions in the matrix, which modified fibers diameters, and thus, mats final properties.

Focusing on eco-friendly materials, cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) have gained attention as nanoreinforcement due to their exceptional properties conferred by the elevated length/diameter aspect ratio and high specific mechanical properties. Furthermore, their water dispersibility makes them suitable nanoreinforcements for their incorporation in waterborne polyurethanes (WBPU). The possibility of tailoring the properties by varying the composition and nature of the reagents, opens the opportunity for a wide range of applications. Therefore, in this work a WBPU was synthesized for the preparation of nanocomposite films with different CNC content and the properties of the films were analyzed. The effective incorporation of CNC resulted in an increase in moduli and stress at yield besides in an increased thermomechanical stability, reaching the percolation threshold at a 3wt% CNC as determined theoretically. Nevertheless, above the percolation threshold, the presence of agglomerates reduced slightly these values. The prepared nanocomposites showed increased hydrophilicity after CNC addition.

HYPOTHESIS: The possibility of tailoring the final properties of environmentally friendly waterborne polyurethane and polyurethane-urea dispersions and the films they produce makes them attractive for a wide range of applications. Both the reagents content and the synthesis route contribute to the observed final properties. EXPERIMENTS: A series of polyurethane-urea and polyurethane aqueous dispersions were synthesized using 1,2-ethanediamine and/or 1,4-butanediol as chain extenders. The diamine content was varied from 0 to 4.5wt%. Its addition was carried out either by the classical heterogeneous reaction medium (after phase inversion step), or else by the alternative homogeneous medium (prior to dispersion formation). Dispersions as well as films prepared from dispersions have been later extensively characterized. FINDINGS: 1,2-Ethanediamine addition in heterogeneous medium leads to dispersions with high particle sizes and broad distributions whereas in homogeneous medium, lower particle sizes and narrow distributions were observed, thus leading to higher uniformity and cohesiveness among particles during film formation. Thereby, stress transfer is favored adding the diamine in a homogeneous medium; and thus the obtained films presented quite higher stress and modulus values. Furthermore, the higher uniformity of films tends to hinder water molecules transport through the film, resulting, in general, in a lower water absorption capacity.
