RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Neck pain is a prevalent global musculoskeletal issue, significantly contributing to the loss of years of healthy life due to disability. Chronic nonspecific neck pain (CNNP) involves diverse symptoms impacting mobility and quality of life. While therapeutic exercises demonstrate efficacy, the role of photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) remains uncertain. This study aims to assess the additional effects of PBMT within a multimodal therapeutic intervention for CNNP. METHODS: A randomized, two-arm, controlled, blind clinical trial follows CONSORT and SPIRIT guidelines. Participants diagnosed with CNNP will receive a stand-alone multimodal therapeutic intervention or the same program with additional PBMT. The primary outcomes will be assessed by the functional disability identified through applying the NDI (Neck Disability Index). Secondary outcomes will be pain intensity during rest and active neck movement, catastrophizing and kinesiophobia, functionality, and disability assessed at baseline, after 8 weeks, and at a 4-week follow-up. Both groups receive pain education before personalized interventions, including resistance exercises, neuromuscular activities, mobility, and body balance. The PBMT group undergoes low-level light therapy. Intention-to-treat analysis, using linear mixed models, employs data presented as mean, standard deviation, and differences with a 95% confidence interval. Non-normally distributed variables transform. Statistical significance is set at 5%. DISCUSSION: This study addresses a critical gap in understanding the combined effects of PBMT and therapeutic exercises for CNNP. The findings aim to guide clinicians, researchers, and CNNP sufferers through rigorous methodology and diverse outcome assessments, offering valuable insights into evidence-based practices for CNNP management. Data confidentiality is maintained throughout, ensuring participant privacy during statistical analysis. TRIAL REGISTRATION: Effects of adding photobiomodulation to a specific therapeutic exercise program for the treatment of individuals with chronic nonspecific neck pain, registration number: NCT05400473, on 2022-05-27.

RESUMO

Introduction: Patients with end-stage heart failure (HF) may need mechanical circulatory support such as a left ventricular assist device (LVAD). However, there are a range of complications associated with LVAD including aortic regurgitation (AR) and thrombus formation. This study assesses whether the risk of developing aortic conditions can be minimised by optimising LVAD implantation technique. Methods: In this work, we evaluate the aortic flow patterns produced under different geometrical parameters for the anastomosis of the outflow graft (OG) to the aorta using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). A three-dimensional aortic model is created and the HeartMate III OG positioning is simulated by modifying (i) the distance from the anatomic ventriculo-arterial junction (AVJ) to the OG, (ii) the cardinal position around the aorta, and (iii) the angle between the aorta and the OG. The continuous LVAD flow and the remnant native cardiac cycle are used as inlet boundaries and the three-element Windkessel model is applied at the pressure outlets. Results: The analysis quantifies the impact of OG positioning on different haemodynamic parameters, including velocity, wall shear stress (WSS), pressure, vorticity and turbulent kinetic energy (TKE). We find that WSS on the aortic root (AoR) is around two times lower when the OG is attached to the coronal side of the aorta using an angle of 45° ± 10° at a distance of 55 mm. Discussion: The results show that the OG placement may significantly influence the haemodynamic patterns, demonstrating the potential application of CFD for optimising OG positioning to minimise the risk of cardiovascular complications after LVAD implantation.

Objective: to reflect on the lifestyle of nursing students in the emerging paradigm of liquid modernity. Content: reflective essay based on 20 articles on the subject critically discussed in dialogue with the concepts of emerging paradigm and liquid modernity. The discussion was organized into two categories: nursing students' lifestyle in the context of liquid modernity: from social reality to psychic suffering; and lifestyle of nursing students and the emerging paradigm: from dominant paradigms to individuation. Final considerations: liquid times reverberate in the lifestyle and health of nursing students, aggravating postmodern diseases. It is worth highlighting the way in which these students apprehend the difficulties and the learning they deduce from these opportunities. The lifestyle of these students must consider the scope of the singular and profound perspective of being inserted in the emerging paradigm(AU)

Enrolling in Higher Education includes various stressors for the student and the literature points to the need for interventions to facilitate adaptation to university. The academic experiences workshop, a brief psychological intervention (8 sessions) based on behavioral analysis, sought to develop repertoires for coping with the stressors present in higher education. Nine nursing students participated after signing consent terms. They provide answers before and after participating in the workshop: 1) the Self-Reporting Questionnaire, Brazilian version, an instrument for screening symptoms related to common mental disorders (CMD); and 2) the Psychological Well-Being Scale (PBS). Initially, 88.9% of participants had symptoms of CMD, and the mean EBEP was 24.97 (SD=1.22). After the intervention, only 22.2% of the students continued to present symptoms of CMD, and the mean EBEP increased to 29.34 (SD=1.17). The implications of this intervention are discussed in view of the challenges faced by School and Educational Psychology in Higher Education.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the association between adherence to a home exercise program and central sensitization, pain intensity, and functionality in individuals with knee osteoarthritis (KOA). METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 57 individuals with KOA. Evaluations were performed using the Exercise Adherence Rating Scale (EARS), the numerical rating scale (NRPS), the International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC), The Central Sensitization Inventory (CSI), and the 30 sec sit and stand test (30SSST). Histograms were created to determine the normality of the data. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test was used to determine the normality of the data. Thus, Pearson's (r) and determination (R2) correlation coefficients were calculated to determine the strength of associations between variables. RESULTS: No significant association was found between adherence behavior or reasons for adherence and central sensitization symptoms, the intensity of pain on rest and movement, knee disability symptoms, and functionality. CONCLUSION: No significant association was identified between adherence to a home exercise program and central sensitization, pain intensity, and functionality in individuals with KOA.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to validate the internal structure of the Brazilian version of the Baecke Habitual Physical Activity Questionnaire. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with individuals over 18 years old of both sexes, with Brazilian Portuguese as their native language. The structure of the Baecke Habitual Physical Activity Questionnaire was tested by confirmatory factor analysis. The model fit was evaluated by the following indices: root mean square error of approximation, comparative fit index, Tucker-Lewis index, standardized root mean square residual, and χ²/degrees of freedom. We used the Akaike information criterion and Bayesian information criterion to compare different structures of the Baecke Habitual Physical Activity Questionnaire. RESULTS: A total of 241 individuals participated in this study. The original structure of the Baecke Habitual Physical Activity Questionnaire with 16 items and 3 domains was compared to a structure with 14 items and 3 domains. The internal structure of the Baecke Habitual Physical Activity Questionnaire with 14 items showed better fit indices and lower Akaike information criterion and Bayesian information criterion values. CONCLUSION: The best internal structure of the Brazilian version of the Baecke Habitual Physical Activity Questionnaire in adults presents 3 domains and 14 items.

RESUMO

The coronavirus pandemic has severely impacted children's and adolescents' lives due to policies and regulations implemented to slow the virus from spreading, which led to a loss of routine, structure, academic support, and social contacts. Literature also reports a lack of outdoor activity, inappropriate diet, and disruption of sleeping habits as affecting children's and adolescents' lifestyles and well-being. Remarkably, these consequent psychological, behavioral, and emotional changes can compromise their self-esteem, sense of self-efficacy, and self-concept, affecting their immune systems. These maladaptive coping strategies and associated effects may emerge as a failure to access some of the sources of support that might help them cope. Facing this crisis, we aimed at promoting well-being, growth, and the positive development of Portuguese adolescents through an intervention focused on positive coping strategies. We developed "Adolescer in time of COVID-19-A good practices Guide for adolescents in social distancing" as a digital document to be quickly disseminated online, answering the emergent needs of Portuguese youth between 13 and 18 years old during the COVID-19 pandemic. In this article, we present the rationale and process of construction of this intervention while living within a quarantine period, considering the restrictive measures adopted at the time.

RESUMO

Exercise is often pointed out as an effective form of treatment in the clinical management of chronic neck pain (CNP). However, due to its complex range of causal factors and great diversity of signs and symptoms, other resources such as photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) have been routinely used for the treatment of CNP. The aim of this study was to systematically review the literature on the use of the association of PBMT and therapeutic exercises in relation to pain intensity and neck disability in individuals with CNP. PubMed, Medline (via Ovid), Embase (via Ovid), Cinahl (via Ebsco), and Central (via Cochrane library) databases were searched using the following terms: "laser," "low-level laser," "photobiomodulation," "light emitting diodes," "phototherapy," "exercise," "chronic neck pain." After verification and implementation of eligibility criteria, seven manuscripts were considered eligible for data analysis. These manuscripts had methodological quality between 5 and 8 points on the PEDro scale. Most studies used low infrared laser therapy to perform PBMT, with a wide range of parameters and energy density between 2 and 7 J/cm2 and a total treatment time between 2 and 6 weeks. Four studies showed significant benefits in terms of pain intensity at short-term follow-up and one at intermediate-term follow-up. However, only one showed a minimal clinically important change. No studies have shown significant improvement in disability. This review demonstrates that the association of PBMT with therapeutic exercises in general promotes significant benefits only for the intensity of pain. However, it does not seem to promote a minimally effective clinical difference in individuals with CNP.

The objective is to analyze the meanings attributed by mothers of children affected by cancer to dance, in relation to lifestyle and health care. explanatory, qualitative study, carried out with mothers of children with cancer, at the time of hospitalization for chemotherapy, in the pediatrics department of the José Alencar Gomes da Silva National Cancer Institute, Rio de Janeiro. The data were collected through a lifestyle identification and characterization form and in-depth semi-structured interviews, from February 2019 to March 2020. Symbolic Interactionism was chosen as the reference base and Grounded Theory for the production and analysis of Dice. The study is justified for being original and unpublished and for the transmutation that dance performed in the mothers of children with cancer, reflecting new possibilities for taking care of themselves and for taking care of others. The components corresponding to the paradigmatic model emerged from the data, namely: Perceiving daily situations challenging survival: Between the real and the ideal, Re- signifying the perception of stereotyped grievance through a playful space of creation, Echoing through the experience in the dance space, new possibilities to take care of yourself and to take care of others. As a central category, the study highlighted: Transmuting the energy of the child's mother with cancer through the symbolic of dance. The study thus points out explanatory constructs that deal with the phenomenon of meanings attributed to dance by mothers of children with cancer related to lifestyle and comprehensive health, given the intervening conditions, action/interaction strategies, and consequences/ results, which imply for nursing/health care.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to investigate the reliability and construct validity of the Self-Estimated Functional Inability because of Pain questionnaire for workers in a sample of Brazilian workers with musculoskeletal pain. METHODS: This is a questionnaire validation study. Workers with musculoskeletal pain were included. Besides the Self-Estimated Functional Inability because of Pain questionnaire for workers, we used the following instruments to perform construct validity: the Work Ability Index and the Numerical Pain Rating Scale. A subsample answered the Self-Estimated Functional Inability because of Pain questionnaire for workers in two moments to calculate reliability by means of the intraclass correlation coefficient and internal consistency by means of the Cronbach's alpha. RESULTS: A total of 190 Brazilian workers were included. Regarding the construct validity, we observed a correlation with magnitude above 0.50 between the Self-Estimated Functional Inability because of Pain questionnaire for workers and the Numerical Pain Rating Scale, given that these two instruments have similarity in the construct, and correlations above 0.30 between the Self-Estimated Functional Inability because of Pain questionnaire for workers and the domains 2, 3, and 4 of the Work Ability Index. Regarding reliability, we observed adequate reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient=0.864) and internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha=0.807). CONCLUSION: The Self-Estimated Functional Inability because of Pain questionnaire for workers is a reliable and valid instrument to be used in Brazilian workers with musculoskeletal pain.

OBJECTIVE: Identify the cisgender man's view before the new gender roles in contemporary Brazilian society and the construction of new masculinities. METHOD: This study is a descriptive, quantitative and cross-sectional analysis, composed of a sample of 38 male students aged 18 years or older from different courses at a public state university at Montes Claros, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The research was based on a semi-structured questionnaire containing twenty-three objective questions. RESULTS: It was possible identifying a greater return on the part of black individuals. Most of them (62.5%) affirm they usually don't talk about feelings. The biggest discrepancy was observed among students from different areas of study. Students from Social Sciences, Math and Technology and Health Sciences claim to have difficulties in being and doing what they want to because of people's reactions. On the other hand, students from Human Sciences said they have never had that difficulty, besides those students affirm they hardly ever seek information about the new social constructions of gender roles. CONCLUSION: Results obtained show area of study as more influential than race not ignoring their influence - and may indicate an alternative to expand debates about gender roles among groups of cisgender men, mixing debates of each group in order to find a balance between information and its place in society.

Objective: This study evaluated the association between parafunctional anxiety, eating habits, systemic conditions and assessment of oral hygiene habits with dental non-carious cervical lesions (NCCL). Material and Methods: this quantitative, observational study included 100 patients between 20 and 58 years old (mean of 37 years) with NCCL evaluated by clinical examination and sample calculation. The data were collected with use of a questionnaire made by a previously calibrated researcher, which referred to medical, dental, social history and anxiety assessments. After obtaining the data they were tabulated and subjected to statistical analysis using Fisher's exact two-proportion binomial test, adopting a 5% significance level. Results: consumption of carbonated drinks (81.6%), citrus fruits (76.3%), tooth brushing frequency equal or higher than three times a day (100%) and abrasiveness of toothpaste (100%) were significantly associated with presence of NCCL (p=0.0001). Gastrointestinal reflux, xerostomia, bulimia and anorexia showed negative association with NCCL (p=1.000). Anxiety was not directly associated with NCCL in the study population (36.8%). Conclusion: there was no direct association between the presence of non-carious cervical lesions and anxiety

RESUMO

Beta hemolytic streptococci, particulary group A, are the most frequently isolated pathogens in cases of pharyngoamigdalitis. Other beta hemolytic streptococci also produce this pathology. An increase of positive cultures for group A streptococci was detected during 2004 in relation to previous years. The aim of this study was to determine the isolation rates of beta hemolytic streptococci groups A, C and G during a period of 5 years. Pharyngeal exudates were obtained from children (aged 6 months to 18 years) and adults. Swabs were cultured on Columbia agar plates containing 5% sheep blood. Lancefield grouping was performed using a latex immunoagglutination test. Group A beta hemolytic streptococci were isolated significantly more frequently from pediatric population than from adults. Groups A, C and G beta hemolytic streptococci were isolated significantly more frequently during 2004 than in previous years. Group G beta hemolytic was more prevalent in adult population than in patients less than 18 years of age. Among the isolated beta hemolytic streptococci, in adults and children, 18.9% and 5.8% were non-group A streptococci, respectively. Therefore special attention should be paid not only to group A beta hemolytic streptococci but also to other groups. Throat culture is the most reliable method for detecting the presence of the beta hemolytic streptococci and should also be indicated in adult patients.

RESUMO

Marine species muscles present non-proteins nitrogenated compounds, used as quality index. They are total volatile basis (NBVT), trimethylamine oxide (TMAO) and trimethylamine (TMA). pH is considered too as a quality index. The aim of this work was to evaluate these parameters in a fresh and canned marine product from the V region, corresponding to mora crab (Homalaspis plana). Fresh pincer meat from mora crab was extracted and kept in ice until theits analysis and thermal process of the canned product. A 3(2) statistical design was applied, considering two variables with 3 levels: 15, 30 y 45 minutes time levels: 80 degrees, 100 degrees y 121 degrees C temperature levels. Nine conditions of time-temperature were obtained. The thermal treatment caused an increase in pH and BVT. The TMA was increased since reduction of TMAO.
