RESUMO

Thrips coxalis sp. n. and T. spiranthicola sp. n. are described from Lespedeza buergeri and Spiranthes sinensis, respectively in Japan. Variation is discussed in campaniform sensilla on metascutum and abdominal tergite IX, also the distribution of microtrichia on hind coxae within Thripidae, and a revised key to Japanese species of Thrips is provided.

Zygentoma is an order of wingless insects, representing the sister group of Pterygota and constituting Dicondylia together with Pterygota. Contrasting views exist regarding midgut epithelium formation in Zygentoma. According to some reports, in Zygentoma, the midgut epithelium is entirely derived from yolk cells as in other wingless orders; however, according to other reports, the midgut epithelium is of dual origin in Zygentoma, similar to that in Palaeoptera of Pterygota, i.e., the anterior and posterior midgut epithelia are stomodaeal and proctodaeal respectively, whereas the middle part of the midgut originates from yolk cells. Aiming to provide a sound basis to evaluate the true image of midgut epithelium formation in Zygentoma, we examined the formation of the midgut epithelium in detail in Thermobia domestica, and concluded that the midgut epithelium is exclusively derived from yolk cells in Zygentoma, without the stomodaeal and proctodaeal elements involved in its formation. The participation of the anlagen differentiated at or around the stomodaeal and proctodaeal extremities in the formation of the midgut epithelium (bipolar formation) may be regarded as having first appeared not in Dicondylia but in Pterygota, of which the major part is represented by Neoptera with the midgut epithelium formed through bipolar formation.

The decline and disappearance of seminatural grasslands in Japan have caused a reduction in plant and animal species inhabiting such grasslands. We aimed to understand the assemblage structure, species diversity, and distribution of carabid beetles in traditionally managed seminatural grasslands, by comparing with the adjacent old beech forest. We investigated the carabid beetle assemblages in a seminatural grassland maintained by prescribed burning and annual mowing, and the adjacent old beech forest in Yamagata Prefecture, northeast Japan. We recorded several forest species along with open habitat species and habitat generalists in the grassland, suggesting that forest species may utilize the adjacent grasslands as temporary habitats. Cluster analysis showed that the assemblage structure of carabid beetles in the grassland differed from that in the beech forest. There were no clear differences in the carabid assemblages between the burned grassland sites and the grassland sites mowed in July after burning. This suggests that the annual mowing had little influence on the response of grassland carabid species in parts of the grassland. We recorded Harpalus roninus (Coleoptera: Carabidae), a rare carabid species in Japan, indicating that this beetle can be a characteristic of the studied grassland. Redundancy analysis showed that the eight abundant grassland species were associated with canopy openness, grass height, and understory vegetation cover, whereas the five most common species recorded from the beech forest were associated with litter depth and soil moisture.

The adult female of the freshwater ostracod Cyprinotus uenoi Brehm, 1936 (Podocopida: Cypridoidea) has a pair of long, sac-like ovaries separately lying in the posterior part of the left and the right carapace valves. Oogonia and very early previtellogenic oocytes are located in the terminal germarium of each ovary. In the germarium, the oogonia occur in the most terminal region, and the very early previtellogenic oocytes are located in the remainder, arranged in order of size, the larger ones nearer the ovarian lumen. Most of the growing oocytes, previtellogenic and vitellogenic, are found in the ovarian lumen, the larger ones farther from the germarium. In the germarium, a cytoplasmic bridge connects a pair of adjoining germ cells, resulting from an incomplete cytokinesis of oogonial division. Among the previtellogenic and early vitellogenic oocytes in the ovarian lumen, "nurse cells" are found as small, spherical cells in mostly the same number as these oocytes. A cytoplasmic bridge connects each "nurse cell" to an adjoining oocyte. Based on the manner of connection and some morphological features, we consider that each "nurse cell" originates from one of each pair of adjoining germ cells connected by a cytoplasmic bridge in the germarium, as in the true nurse cells of several branchiopod crustaceans and insects with meroistic ovarioles.

The anal secretions of 16 phlaeothripine thrips species (Thysanoptera: Phlaeothripidae) were studied, including a reinvestigation of three species previously reported. A total of 37 components were detected, including hydrocarbons, acetates, terpenes, carboxylic acids, a quinone, an aromatic compound, and a pyranone compound. The secretions of all species were composed of some of these components, with Xylaplothrips inquilinus possessing as many as 11 components. Of these components, (Z)-9-octadecene, (Z)-9-nonadecene, nonadecadiene, octanoic acid, decanoic acid, geranial, neral, alpha-pinene, beta-pinene, caryophyllene, 2-hydroxy-6-methylbenzaldehyde, and two unidentified monoterpenes [UK-I (M+136) and UK-II (M+168)] were detected for the first time. The chemicals were species-specific; four Liothrips species and three Holothrips species could be distinguished from each other and their congeners by the GC profiles of the ether extracts of their anal secretions. The anal secretions of gall-inducing thrips commonly contained terpenes. of which citral (a mixture of geranial and neral) and beta-acaridial repelled ants or had antifungal activity. The findings suggest that these terpenes play a defensive role and prevent galls from fungal infestation. 3-Butanoyl-4-hydroxy-6-methyl-2H-pyran-2-one, found from three Holothrips spp., caused paralysis in ants. Chemical analysis of anal secretion components is a useful method for the classification of tubuliferan species that are difficult to distinguish on the basis of morphological characters.
