Emulsion fortified with ß-carotene was added to corn fiber gum (CFG)/soy protein isolate (SPI) double network gel matrix to obtain emulsion-filled gels (EFG) via dual induction of laccase and glucono-δ-lactone. Protein digestion was accompanied by the release of ß-carotene from gel matrix during in vitro digestion. The surfactant types and corn fiber gum/soy protein isolate ratio affected the ß-carotene bioaccessibility via changing oil-water interfacial composition and emulsion particle size during in vitro digestion. As compared with Tween-20 EFGs, emulsion droplets released from SPI EFGs was more susceptible to flocculation, followed with coalescence due to proteolysis of interfacial SPI during gastric digestion. The resulting oil droplets with large particle size exhibited lower lipase adsorption, thus reducing the free fatty acid content and ß-carotene bioaccessibility. The confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM) observation confirmed that protein hydrolysate from gel matrix were adsorbed onto the oil-water interface competing with Tween-20 during intestinal digestion. For EFGs with higher CFG content, steric hindrance of CFG molecules and less emulsion release could inhibit droplet flocculation, thus enhancing ß-carotene bioaccessibility.

Yaks are crucial genetic resources in the Tibetan Plateau and surrounding regions. Throughout the long process of domestication, natural and artificial selection pressures have enabled yaks to demonstrate adaptive characteristics to the environment in terms of physiological structure and genetic molecules, but no systematic cell analysis has been carried out on this phenomenon of yaks. Here, the population structure and genetic diversity of yak were studied by WGRS, and the genes related to yak adaptability were excavated. Combined with scRNA-seq method, the transcription map of yak lung tissue and skin tissue was constructed, which provided a new comprehensive insight into yak adaptability. The analysis of yak population structure showed that there was obvious genetic differentiation between TZ _ yak and other seven yak populations, while there was significant genetic exchange between PL _ yak and SB _ yak at high altitude. WGRS and scRNA-seq analysis revealed that the gene HIF1A related to high altitude adaptation was expressed in various cell types, while EPAS1 was predominantly expressed in epithelial and endothelial cells of yak lung tissue. Endothelial cells play a critical role in hypoxia-adapted VEGF signaling, which correlates closely with the high expression of KDR and VEGFA genes in endothelial cells and monocytes. Furthermore, in the selection signal of High _ yak vs Low _ yak, 19.8 % of the genes overlapped with the genes screened by skin scRNA-seq, including genes related to coat color such as RORA, BNC2, and KIT. Notably, BNC2 is a gene associated with melanin deposition and shows high expression levels in HS cells. Additionally, GRN in melanocytes and SORT1 in IRS play an important role in cell communication between melanocytes and IRS. These findings offer new insights into the natural polymorphism of yaks and provide a valuable reference for future research on high-altitude mammals, and potentially even human genetics.

Background: With the development of nursing positions and nursing disciplines in China's tertiary hospitals, the number of people applying for the master's degree in nursing is also increasing year by year. Postgraduate examinations are held during internship, so nursing students face the dual pressure of testing and internship, which brings varying degrees of negative experiences and emotional fluctuations. Objective: To explore the psychological experiences and influencing factors of undergraduate nursing students under the dual pressures of clinical nursing internships and postgraduate examination preparations. Design: Descriptive qualitative study. Method: Purposeful sampling was used to recruit 18 participants from eight tertiary hospitals in China between October and December 2023. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted, with interview recordings transcribed verbatim. Thematic analysis was then applied to the data. Results: Four themes were identified: negative experiences under dual pressures, coping mechanisms for negative experiences, motivational effects under dual pressures, and evaluations of significant individuals. Nursing students improved their overall abilities through internships and exam preparations, gaining a clear understanding of themselves and certain hospital roles. However, at this stage, students also experienced adverse psychological experiences for various reasons. Thus, they employed several methods to alleviate their psychological stress, aiming for a better state to face internships and exam preparations. Conclusion: Schools and hospitals should pay more attention to the needs of nursing students under dual pressures, monitoring their emotional states, and providing psychological support to enhance their stress-coping abilities. It is important to ensure the overall well-being of students while strengthening the motivational effects of internships and learning experiences.

Soluble carbohydrates and organic acids are critical determinants of fruit flavor and consumer preference, both of which are susceptible to postharvest treatments and storage conditions. While the individual effectiveness of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) and non-chilling temperature storage in delaying fruit ripening and influencing flavor development has been established, their combined effects on peach storage traits remain unexplored. This study investigated the impact of 1-MCP combined with non-chilling temperature storage on the quality and flavor attributes of yellow peach. Our results revealed that 1-MCP treatment reduced ethylene production during storage and delayed ripening and softening by down-regulating ethylene biosynthesis and signaling genes. Transcriptomic analysis indicated that 1-MCP maintained higher levels of soluble carbohydrates by up-regulating sucrose phosphate synthase (PpSPS1/2) and sorbitol dehydrogenase (PpSDH1) while down-regulating hexokinase (PpHXK1). Concurrently, 1-MCP preserved citric and malic acid levels by suppressing aconitate hydratase (PpACO1) and inducing malate dehydrogenase (PpMDH1), thereby delaying flavor degradation. Co-expression network analysis implicated ethylene response factors (PpERFs) as major regulators of sugar and acid metabolisms genes, with PpERF19 potentially functioning as a key transcriptional controller. Overall, this study verified the efficacy of combined 1-MCP and non-chilling storage for yellow peach preservation, identified key 1-MCP-modulated genes involved in sugar and acid metabolisms, and provided insights into regulating peach flavor development via postharvest approaches.

Background: Paraquat poisoning remains a critical public health issue with no established effective treatment. Hemoperfusion (HP) has been recognized for its potential to remove toxins and is widely employed in several developing countries for managing acute paraquat poisoning cases. However, the reluctance of some patients to undergo this recommended treatment has been observed but not thoroughly investigated. This study aimed to explore the factors associated with the refusal of HP in patients suffering from paraquat intoxication. Materials and Methods: In this retrospective study, data of 358 patients with acute paraquat poisoning were analyzed in Xi'an, China. The outcome of our study was mortality, and the influential factors were age, gender, marital status, educational level, symptoms at presentation, and laboratory findings. A logistic regression model was utilized to explore the independent risk factors. Results: In a total of 358 paraquat-poisoned patients, the significant differences were found between patients who underwent HP and those who did not, particularly regarding mean age (48.02 years vs. 42.32 years; P = 0.01), mental disorders (15.6% vs. 6.1%; P = 0.01), poisoning severity score (2.36 vs. 2.57; P = 0.03), organ failure (10.9% vs. 23.5%; P = 0.02), and mechanical ventilation (18.8% vs. 33.3%; P = 0.02). Patients who refused HP exhibited a higher mortality (20.3% vs. 10.9%; P = 0.03) compared to those who received HP. Age (odds ratio (OR), 1.76; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.01-3.82; P = 0.01) and history of mental disorders (OR, 2.81; 95% CI: 1.19-6.61; P = 0.02) were identified as significant independent predictors for the refusal of HP. Conclusion: The results of this study showed that elderly individuals and those with a history of mental disorders were independently associated with refusing HP in patients with acute paraquat poisoning.

The design of an ideal catalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is essential for electrocatalytic water-splitting. The Ni3S2 (101) facet is considered a suitable electrocatalyst owing to its good conductivity and stability, but high performance remains a challenge. Our first-principles calculations show that transition metal (TM) doping can effectively modulate p-d orbital coupling resulting from TM doping-induced charge redistribution on active site Ni atoms, thus enhancing the orbital interaction between Ni-3d xz and O-2p y as well as between Ni-3d z2 and O-2p x . This improves the binding of the active site and oxygen-containing intermediates, thereby reducing the overpotential of the OER. Mo-doped Ni3S2 can be considered a compelling OER catalyst for its better stability and lower overpotential of 0.23 V.

Metabolic reprogramming and cellular senescence greatly contribute to cancer relapse and recurrence. In aging and treated prostate, persistent accumulating senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP) of cancer cells often limits the overall survival of patients. Novel strategic therapy with monoacylglycerol lipase (MGLL) upregulation that counters the cellular and docetaxel induced SASP might overcome this clinical challenge in prostate cancer (PCa). With primary comparative expression and survival analysis screening of fatty acid (FA) metabolism signature genes in the TCGA PCa dataset and our single center cohort, MGLL was detected to be downregulated in malignancy prostate tissues and its low expression predicted worse progression-free and overall survival. Functionally, overexpression of MGLL mainly suppresses NF-κB-driven SASP (N-SASP) which mostly restricts the cancer cell paracrine and autocrine tumorigenic manners and the corresponding cellular senescence. Further investigating metabolites, we determined that MGLL constitutive expression prevents lipid accumulation, decreases metabolites preferably, and consequently downregulates ATP levels. Overexpressed MGLL inhibited IκBα phosphorylation, NF-κB p65 phosphorylation, and NF-κB nuclear translocation to deactivate NF-κB transcriptional activities, and be responsible for the repressed N-SASP, partially through reducing ATP levels. Preclinically, combinational treatment with MGLL overexpression and docetaxel chemotherapy dramatically delays tumor progression in mouse models. Taken together, our findings identify MGLL as a switch for lipase-related N-SASP suppression and provide a potential drug candidate for promoting docetaxel efficacy in PCa.

Confronting the impending exhaustion of traditional energy, it is urgent to devise and deploy sustainable clean energy alternatives. Osmotic energy contained in the salinity gradient of the sea-river interface is an innovative, abundant, clean, and renewable osmotic energy that has garnered considerable attention in recent years. Inspired by the impressively intelligent ion channels in nature, the developed angstrom-scale 2D channels with simple fabrication process, outstanding design flexibility, and substantial charge density exhibit excellent energy conversion performance, opening up a new era for osmotic energy harvesting. However, this attractive research field remains fraught with numerous challenges, particularly due to the complexities associated with the regulation at angstrom scale. In this review, the latest advancements in the design of angstrom-scale 2D channels are primarily outlined for harvesting osmotic energy. Drawing upon the analytical framework of osmotic power generation mechanisms and the insights gleaned from the biomimetic intelligent devices, the design strategies are highlighted for high-performance angstrom channels in terms of structure, functionalization, and application, with a particular emphasis on ion selectivity and ion transport resistance. Finally, current challenges and future prospects are discussed to anticipate the emergence of more anomalous properties and disruptive technologies that can promote large-scale power generation.

Swift heavy ion (SHI) irradiation is an effective method for modulating the properties of thin oxide films by introducing defects, strains, and structural transformations. Here, we applied 516 MeV Xe31+ irradiation to BaTiO3 (BTO) thin films grown on Nb:SrTiO3 substrates to induce the generation of tracks and nanohillocks. Memristors with BTO films irradiated at a fluence of 5 × 1010 ions cm-2 displayed excellent retention and endurance characteristics. Moreover, the memristors exhibited highly stable synaptic plasticity functions such as excitatory/inhibitory post-synaptic currents (E/IPSC) and paired-pulse facilitation/depression (PPF/D). The memristors achieved a discrimination accuracy of 92.5% on given handwritten digit data by an artificial neural network with supervised learning. These results verify that the judicious application of SHI irradiation on thin oxide films is a viable strategy for exploring neuromorphic computation.

In electrochemical analysis, developing biosensors that can resist the nonspecific adsorption of interfering biomolecules in human serum remains a huge challenge, which depends on the design of efficient antifouling materials. Herein, 3-aminopropyldimethylamine oxide (APDMAO) biomimetic zwitterions were prepared as antifouling interfaces. Among them, the unique positive and negative charges (N+-O-) of APDMAO promoted its hydrogen bonding with water molecules, forming a firm hydration barrier that endowed it with strong and stable antifouling performance. Meanwhile, its inherent amino groups could copolymerize with the biomimetic adhesive dopamine to form a thin layer of quinone intermediates, providing conditions for the subsequent binding of aptamers and signal probes. Importantly, the biomimetic APDMAO with functional groups and one-step oxidation characteristics solved the challenges of zwitterionic synthesis and modification, as well as improved biocompatibility of the sensing interface, thereby expanding the application potential of zwitterions as antifouling materials in sensing analysis. Thiol-containing alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) aptamers modified with methylene blue (MB) were coupled under controllable potential, greatly reducing the incubation time, which promoted the productization application of biosensors. In addition, the ratio sensing strategy using MB as internal standard factors and concanavalin-silver nanoparticles (ConA-Ag NPs) as signal probes was introduced to reduce background and instrument interferences, thus improving detection accuracy. On this basis, the proposed antifouling electrochemical biosensor achieved sensitive and accurate AFP detection over a wide dynamic range (10 fg/mL-10 ng/mL), with a low detection limit of 3.41 fg/mL (3σ/m). This work provides positive insights into the development of zwitterionic antifouling materials and clinical detection of liver cancer markers in human serum.

The phenomenon of high-temperature oxidation in magnesium alloys constitutes a significant obstacle to their application in the aerospace field. However, the incorporation of active elements such as alloys and rare earth elements into magnesium alloys alters the organization and properties of the oxide film, resulting in an enhancement of their antioxidation capabilities. This paper comprehensively reviews the impact of alloying elements, solubility, intermetallic compounds (second phase), and multiple rare earth elements on the antioxidation and flame-retardant effects of magnesium alloys. The research progress of flame-retardant magnesium alloys containing multiple rare earth elements is summarized from two aspects: the oxide film and the matrix structure. Additionally, the existing flame-retardancy models for magnesium alloys and the flame-retardant mechanisms of various flame-retardant elements are discussed. The results indicate that the oxidation of rare earth magnesium alloys is a complex process determined by internal properties such as the structure and properties of the oxide film, the type and amount of rare earth elements added, the proportion of multiple rare earth elements, synergistic element effects, as well as external properties like heat treatment, oxygen concentration, and partial pressure. Finally, some issues in the development of multi-rare earth magnesium alloys are raised and the potential directions for the future development of rare earth flame-retardant magnesium alloys are discussed. This paper aims to promote an understanding of the oxidation behavior of flame-retardant magnesium alloys and provide references for the development of rare earth flame-retardant magnesium alloys with excellent comprehensive performance.

Solid electrolyte-gated transistors exhibit improved chemical stability and can fulfill the requirements of microelectronic packaging. Typically, metal oxide semiconductors are employed as channel materials. However, the extrinsic electron transport properties of these oxides, which are often prone to defects, pose limitations on the overall electrical performance. Achieving excellent repeatability and stability of transistors through the solution process remains a challenging task. In this study, we propose the utilization of a solution-based method to fabricate an In2O3/ZnO heterojunction structure, enabling the development of efficient multifunctional optoelectronic devices. The heterojunction's upper and lower interfaces induce energy band bending, resulting in the accumulation of a large number of electrons and a significant enhancement in transistor mobility. To mimic synaptic plasticity responses to electrical and optical stimuli, we utilize Li+-doped high-k ZrOxthin films as a solid electrolyte in the device. Notably, the heterojunction transistor-based convolutional neural network achieves a high accuracy rate of 93% in recognizing handwritten digits. Moreover, our research involves the simulation of a typical sensory neuron, specifically a nociceptor, within our synaptic transistor. This research offers a novel avenue for the advancement of cost-effective three-terminal thin-film transistors tailored for neuromorphic applications.

The effects of SHP on the texture, rheological properties, starch crystallinity and microstructure of frozen dough were investigated. The efficacy of SHP in enhancing dough quality is concentration-dependent, with frozen dough containing 1.5% SHP exhibiting hardness comparable to fresh dough without SHP (221.31 vs. 221.42 g). Even at 0.5% SHP, there is a noticeable improvement in frozen dough quality. The rheological results showed that the viscoelasticity of dough increased with higher SHP concentration. What's more, XRD and SEM results indicated that the SHP's hydrophilicity reduces the degree of starch hydrolysis, slows down the damage of starch particles during freezing, and consequently lowers the crystallinity of starch. Additionally, CLSM observations revealed that SHP enhances the gluten network structure, diminishing the appearance of holes. Therefore, the physical, chemical properties, and microstructure of frozen dough with SHP demonstrate significant enhancement, suggesting SHP's promising antifreeze properties and potential as a food antifreeze agent.

Cyclin B (CYCB) is a regulatory subunit of cyclin-dependent kinase (CDK), the concentration of which fluctuates to regulate cell cycle progression. Extensive studies have been performed on cyclins in numerous species, yet the evolutionary relationships and biological functions of the CYCB family genes in Brassica napus remain unclear. In this study, we identified 299 CYCB genes in 11 B. napus accessions. Phylogenetic analysis suggests that CYCB genes could be divided into three subfamilies in angiosperms and that the CYCB3 subfamily members may be a newer group that evolved in eudicots. The expansion of BnaCYCB genes underwent segmental duplication and purifying selection in genomes, and a number of drought-responsive and light-responsive cis-elements were found in their promoter regions. Additionally, expression analysis revealed that BnaCYCBs were strongly expressed in the developing seed and silique pericarp, as confirmed by the obviously reduced seed size of the mutant cycb3;1 in Arabidopsis thaliana compared with Col-0. This study provides a comprehensive evolutionary analysis of CYCB genes as well as insight into the biological function of CYCB genes in B. napus.

This study aims to investigate the significant relationship between serum heavy metals (lead [Pb], cadmium [Cd], mercury [Hg]) and the risk of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) infection. Data were derived from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) conducted in the United States from 2007 to 2016. This nationally representative survey, conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics, assessed the health status of participants through interviews, physical examinations, and laboratory tests. After excluding participants lacking serum Pb, Cd, and Hg data, as well as those missing HSV-1 testing data and pregnant women, the analysis included 13 772 participants, among whom 3363 were adolescents. A survey-weighted multivariate logistic regression model was used to evaluate the association between heavy metal exposure and the risk of HSV-1 infection, and to explore the dose-response relationship between them. In adults and adolescents, serum concentrations of Pb and Cd were higher in those infected with HSV-1 than in those not infected. However, an increase in serum Hg concentration was observed only in infected adolescents. After adjusting for potential confounders, elevated serum Pb and Cd concentrations in adults were associated with an increased risk of HSV-1 infection. Higher serum Pb and Cd concentrations were associated with an increased risk of HSV-2 infection, irrespective of HSV-1 infection status. In adults, serum concentrations of Pb and Hg showed an approximately linear relationship with HSV-1 infection risk (p for nonlinearity > 0.05), whereas the dose-response relationship between serum Cd concentration and HSV-1 infection was nonlinear (p for nonlinearity = 0.004). In adolescents, serum concentrations of heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Hg) showed an approximately linear relationship with HSV-1 infection (p for nonlinearity > 0.05). Furthermore, the study examined the relationship between serum heavy metal levels and the risk of HSV-1 infection across different genders, races, income levels, weight statuses, and immune statuses. In conclusion, there is a significant association between serum heavy metal concentrations and HSV-1 infection, which warrants further investigation into the causal relationship between them.

The applications of polysaccharides as emulsifiers are limited due to the lack of hydrophobicity. However, traditional hydrophobic modification methods used for polysaccharides are complicated and involve significant mechanical and thermal losses. In this study, soy hull polysaccharide (SHP) and terminally aminopropylated polydimethylsiloxane (NPN) were selected to investigate the feasibility of a simple and green interfacial membrane strengthening strategy based on the interfacial polymerization of anionic polysaccharides and fat-soluble alkaline ligands. Our results show that deprotonated SHP and protonated NPN can be complexed at the water/oil (W/O) interface, reduce interfacial tension, and form a strong membrane structure. Moreover, they can quickly form a membrane at the W/O interface upon the moment of contact to produce stable all-liquid printing products with complex patterns. However, the molecular weight of NPN affects the complexation reaction. Consequently, this study has long-term implications to expanding the areas of application for anionic polysaccharides.

RESUMO

Heart failure (HF) has emerged as the most pressing health concerns globally, and extant clinical therapies are accompanied by side effects and patients have a high burden of financial. The protein products of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) target genes have a variety of cardioprotective effects, including antioxidant, metabolic functions and anti-inflammatory. By evaluating established preclinical and clinical research in HF to date, we explored the potential of Nrf2 to exert unique cardioprotective functions as a novel therapeutic receptor for HF. In this review, we generalize the progression, structure, and function of Nrf2 research in the cardiovascular system. The mechanism of action of Nrf2 involved in HF as well as agonists of Nrf2 in natural compounds are summarized. Additionally, we discuss the challenges and implications for future clinical translation and application of pharmacology targeting Nrf2. It's critical to developing new drugs for HF.

Background: With improving survival after pancreatic cancer (PC) resection, questions emerge concerning risk and patterns of metachronous tumors. We aimed to determine the incidence of multiple primary cancers among postoperative PC survivors. Methods: Patients undergoing PC surgery from 1975 to 2020 were identified in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) registry. Standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) compared observed-to-expected cancers based on U.S. population rates. Cumulative incidence of secondary tumors was analyzed with Cox regression and cancer-specific survival with Kaplan-Meier curves. Results: Of 6,100 resected PC patients, 267 (4.38%) developed multiple cancers over 6.2 years median follow-up period. Subsequent malignancies showed a rising cumulative incidence extending beyond 5 years. Lung cancer was the predominant second primary in both males (n=36, SIR 1.87) and females (n=32, SIR 2.17). Prostate (n=33) and breast (n=25) cancers were also common. Risk varied by latency period and gender. Conclusions: Postoperative PC patients face a measurable risk for secondary cancers. Enhanced long-term surveillance has the potential to improve early detection and outcomes in this survivor population. Our data provides real-world evidence which could help inform surveillance guidelines in the future.

The study aimed to evaluate a food adhesive developed using tea polyphenols (TPs) with soybean protein isolate (SPI) to create a cohesive bond between soy protein gel and simulated fat. Upon the addition of 5.0 % TPs, significant increases in viscosity, thermal stability, and crystallinity were noted in adhesives, suggesting the formation of a cohesive network. Furthermore, TPs effectively enhanced adhesion strength, with the optimal addition being 5.0 %. This enhancement can be attributed to hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions between TPs and SPI molecules. TPs induced a greater expansion of the protein structure, exposing numerous buried hydrophobic groups to a more hydrophilic and polar environment. However, excessive TPs were found to diminish adhesion strength. This can be attributed to enhanced reactions between TPs and SPI, where high molecular weight SPI-TPs cooperatively aggregate to form agglomerates that eventually precipitated, rendering the adhesive network inhomogeneous, less stable, and more prone to disruption.

Ultrathin topological insulator membranes are building blocks of exotic quantum matter. However, traditional epitaxy of these materials does not facilitate stacking in arbitrary orders, while mechanical exfoliation from bulk crystals is also challenging due to the non-negligible interlayer coupling therein. Here we liberate millimeter-scale films of the topological insulator Bi2Se3, grown by molecular beam epitaxy, down to 3 quintuple layers. We characterize the preservation of the topological surface states and quantum well states in transferred Bi2Se3 films using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Leveraging the photon-energy-dependent surface sensitivity, the photoemission spectra taken with 6 and 21.2 eV photons reveal a transfer-induced migration of the topological surface states from the top to the inner layers. By establishing clear electronic structures of the transferred films and unveiling the wave function relocation of the topological surface states, our work lays the physics foundation crucial for the future fabrication of artificially stacked topological materials with single-layer precision.
