RESUMO

The use of plastic as material in various applications has been essential in the evolution of the technology industry and human society since 1950. Therefore, their production and waste generation are high due to population growth. Pyrolysis is an effective recycling method for treating plastic waste because it can recover valuable products for the chemical and petrochemical industry. This work addresses the thermal pyrolysis of expanded polystyrene (EPS) post-industrial waste in a semi-batch reactor. The influence of reaction temperature (350-500 °C) and heating rate (4-40 °C min-1) on the liquid conversion yields and physicochemical properties was studied based on a multilevel factorial statistical analysis. In addition, the analysis of the obtaining of mono-aromatics such as styrene, toluene, benzene, ethylbenzene, and α-methyl styrene was performed. Hydrocarbon liquid yields of 76.5-93% were achieved at reaction temperatures between 350 and 450 °C, respectively. Styrene yields reached up to 72% at 450 °C and a heating rate of 25 °C min-1. Finally, the potential application of the products obtained is discussed by proposing the minimization of EPS waste via pyrolysis.

Chronic neutrophilic leukemia (CNL) and atypical chronic myeloid leukemia (aCML) are rare myeloid disorders that are challenging with regard to diagnosis and clinical management. To study the similarities and differences of these disorders we undertook a multi-center international study of one of the largest case series (CNL, n=24; aCML, n=37 cases, respectively), focusing on the clinical and mutational profiles (n=53 with molecular data) of these diseases. We found no differences in clinical presentation or outcomes between both entities. As previously described, both CNL and aCML share a complex mutational profile with mutations in genes involved in epigenetic regulation, splicing and signaling pathways. Apart from CSF3R, only EZH2 and TET2 were differentially mutated between them. The molecular profiles support the notion of CNL and aCML being a continuum of the same disease that may fit best within the myelodysplastic/myeloproliferative neoplasms (MDS/MPN). We identified four high-risk mutated genes, specifically CEBPA (ß=2.26, HR=9.54, p=0.003), EZH2 (ß=1.12, HR=3.062, p=0.009), NRAS (ß=1.29, HR=3.63, p=0.048) and U2AF1 (ß=1.75, HR=5.74, p=0.013) by multivariate analysis. Our findings underscore the relevance of molecular-risk classification in CNL/aCML as well as the importance of CSF3R mutations in these diseases.

Atomically thin two-dimensional (2D) layered semiconductors such as transition metal dichalcogenides have attracted considerable attention due to their tunable band gap, intriguing spin-valley physics, piezoelectric effects and potential device applications. Here we study the electronic properties of a single layer WS1.4Se0.6alloys. The electronic structure of this alloy, explored using angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy, shows a clear valence band structure anisotropy characterized by two paraboloids shifted in one direction of thek-space by a constant in-plane vector. This band splitting is a signature of a unidirectional Rashba spin splitting with a related giant Rashba parameter of 2.8 ± 0.7 eV Å. The combination of angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy with piezo force microscopy highlights the link between this giant unidirectional Rashba spin splitting and an in-plane polarization present in the alloy. These peculiar anisotropic properties of the WS1.4Se0.6alloy can be related to local atomic orders induced during the growth process due the different size and electronegativity between S and Se atoms. This distorted crystal structure combined to the observed macroscopic tensile strain, as evidenced by photoluminescence, displays electric dipoles with a strong in-plane component, as shown by piezoelectric microscopy. The interplay between semiconducting properties, in-plane spontaneous polarization and giant out-of-plane Rashba spin-splitting in this 2D material has potential for a wide range of applications in next-generation electronics, piezotronics and spintronics devices.

2D boron nitride (2D-BN) was synthesized by gas-source molecular beam epitaxy on polycrystalline and monocrystalline Ni substrates using gaseous borazine and active nitrogen generated by a remote plasma source. The excess of nitrogen atoms allows to overcome the thickness self-limitation active on Ni when using borazine alone. The nucleation density and the shape of the 2D-BN domains are clearly related to the Ni substrate preparation and to the growth parameters. Based on spatially-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and on the detection of the π plasmon peak, we discuss the origin of the N1s and B1s components and their relationship with an electronic coupling at the interface. After optimization of the growth parameters, a full 2D-BN coverage is obtained, although the material thickness is not evenly distributed. The 2D-BN presents a granular structure on (111) oriented Ni grains, showing a rather poor cristallographic quality. On the contrary, high quality 2D-BN is found on (101) and (001) Ni grains, where triangular islands are observed whose lateral size is limited to ∼20µm.

Nearly localized moiré flat bands in momentum space, arising at particular twist angles, are the key to achieve correlated effects in transition-metal dichalcogenides. Here, we use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) to visualize the presence of a flat band near the Fermi level of van der Waals WSe2/MoSe2heterobilayer grown by molecular beam epitaxy. This flat band is localized near the Fermi level and has a width of several hundred meVs. By combining ARPES measurements with density functional theory calculations, we confirm the coexistence of different domains, namely the reference 2H stacking without layer misorientation and regions with arbitrary twist angles. For the 2H-stacked heterobilayer, our ARPES results show strong interlayer hybridization effects, further confirmed by complementary micro- Raman spectroscopy measurements. The spin-splitting of the valence band atKis determined to be 470 meV. The valence band maximum (VBM) position of the heterobilayer is located at the Γ point. The energy difference between the VBM at Γ and theKpoint is of -60 meV, which is a stark difference compared to individual single monolayer WSe2and monolayer WSe2, showing both a VBM atK.

BACKGROUND: Differences in adolescents and adults by sex in blood levels of leptin and adiposity have been described; however, it is not yet clear if these differences arise from the prepubertal stage in subjects with a normal-weight. Therefore, we examine whether there are differences by sex in levels of blood leptin and adiposity in children with a normal-weight between 0 and 10 years old. METHODS: Search strategy: eligible studies were obtained from three electronic databases (Ovid, Embase and LILACS) and contact with experts. SELECTION CRITERIA: healthy children up to 10 years of age with normal-weight according to age. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSES: data were extracted by four independent reviewers using a predesigned data collection form. For the analysis, we stratified according to age groups (newborns, 0.25-0.5 years, 3-5.9 years, 6-7.9 years, 8-10 years). The statistical analysis was performed in the R program. RESULTS: Of the initially identified 13,712 records, 21 were selected in the systematic review and meta-analysis. The sex was associated with the overall effect on blood leptin (pooled MD = 1.72 ng/mL, 95% CI: 1.25-2.19) and body fat percentage (pooled MD = 3.43%, 95% CI: 2.53-4.33), being both higher in girls. This finding was consistent in the majority of age groups. CONCLUSION: The results of our meta-analyses support the sexual dimorphism in circulating blood leptin and body fat percentage between girls and boys with normal-weight from prepuberty.

Porcine deltacoronavirus (PDCoV), belonging to family Coronaviridae and genus Deltacoronavirus, is a major enteric pathogen in swine. Accurate PDCoV diagnosis relying on laboratory testing and antibody detection is an important approach. This study evaluated the potential of the receptor-binding subunit of the PDCoV spike protein (S1), generated using a mammalian expression system, for specific antibody detection via indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Serum samples were collected at day post-inoculation (DPI) -7 to 42, from pigs (n = 83) experimentally inoculated with different porcine coronaviruses (PorCoV). The diagnostic sensitivity of the PDCoV S1-based ELISA was evaluated using serum samples (n = 72) from PDCoV-inoculated animals. The diagnostic specificity and potential cross-reactivity of the assay was evaluated on PorCoV-negative samples (n = 345) and samples collected from pigs experimentally inoculated with other PorCoVs (n = 472). The overall diagnostic performance, time of detection, and detection rate over time varied across different S/P cut-offs, estimated by Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. The higher detection rate in the PDCoV group was observed after DPI 21. An S/P cut-off of 0.25 provided 100% specificity with no serological cross-reactivity against other PorCoV. These results support the use of S1 protein-based ELISA for accurate detection of PDCoV infections, transference of maternal antibodies, or active surveillance.

While HgTe nanocrystals (NCs) in the mid-infrared region have reached a high level of maturity, their far-infrared counterparts remain far less studied, raising the need for an in-depth investigation of the material before efficient device integration can be considered. Here, we explore the effect of temperature and pressure on the structural, spectroscopic, and transport properties of HgTe NCs displaying an intraband absorption at 10 THz. The temperature leads to a very weak modulation of the spectrum as opposed to what was observed for strongly confined HgTe NCs. HgTe NC films present ambipolar conduction with a clear prevalence of electron conduction as confirmed by transistor and thermoelectric measurements. Under the application of pressure, the material undergoes phase transitions from the zinc blende to cinnabar phase and later to the rock salt phase which we reveal using joint X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy measurements. We discuss how the pressure existence domain of each phase is affected by the particle size.

A severe form of myopia defined as pathologic/high myopia is the main cause of visual impairment and one of the most frequent causes of blindness worldwide. It is characterized by at least 6 diopters or axial length (AL) of eyeball >26 mm and choroidal neovascularization (CNV) in 5 to 10% of cases. Ranibizumab is a humanized recombinant monoclonal antibody fragment targeted against human vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A) used in the treatment of CNV. It acts by preventing VEGF-A from interacting with its receptors (VEGFR-1 and -2) encoded by the FLT1 and KDR genes. Several studies found that the KDR and FLT1 genotypes may represent predictive determinants of efficacy in ranibizumab-treated neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) patients. We performed a retrospective study to evaluate the association of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in VEGFR coding genes with the response rate to ranibizumab in patients with high myopia and CNV. In the association study of genotypes in FLT1 with the response to ranibizumab, we found a significant association between two FLT1 variants (rs9582036, rs7993418) with ranibizumab efficacy at the 12-month follow-up. About the KDR gene, we found that two KDR variants (rs2305948, rs2071559) are associated with best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) improvement and KDR (rs2239702) is associated with lower rates of BCVA worsening considering a 12-month follow-up period.

There is a need to increase health equity in sexual and gender diverse (SGD) populations, a medically underserved group with widening health disparities. To better understand and address SGD health disparities, we have developed a multi-level conceptual framework for nurse scientists that incorporates the concepts of stigma, intersectionality, identify affirmation, and life course trajectory. Social determinants of health formed the background of our conceptual framework. Using this framework, we proposed recommendations to promote SGD health equity through nursing research, health care practice, health care education, and public health care policy. These recommendations align with the National Institute of Nursing Research's goals of dismantling structures that perpetuate racism and impede health inequity and the need to implement interventions that address social determinants of health. As a result, nurse scientists are poised to influence health care policy by translating effective interventions to reduce health disparities for the SGD population into practice.

Postacute COVID-19 has become a relevant public health problem, and radiological and pulmonary function tests are tools that help physicians in decision-making. The objectives of this study are to characterize the findings and patterns on a chest radiograph (CXR) and computed tomography (CT) that are most important in the postacute phase and to evaluate how these changes correlate with clinical data, spirometry, and impulse oscillometry (IOS). This was a retrospective study of 29 patients who underwent CXR, CT, spirometry, and IOS. The inclusion criteria were age >18 years and persistent respiratory symptoms after four weeks. The exclusion criteria were radiological exams with low technical quality and non-COVID-19 acute lung diseases. The inferential analysis was carried out with the chi-square (χ 2) or Fisher's exact test to evaluate the interrelationships between the clinical and COVID-19 variables according to spirometry, IOS, CT, and CXR. In our sample, 19 patients were women (65.5%). The predominance of abnormal spirometry was associated with CT's moderate/severe degree of involvement (p = 0.017; 69.2%, CI 95%: 44.1%-94.3%). There was no significant association between IOS and tomographic and radiographic parameters. A significant association was found between the classifications of the moderate/severe and normal/mild patterns on CT and CXRs (p = 0.003; 93.3%, CI 95%: 77.8%-100%). Patients with moderate/severe impairment on CXR were associated with a higher frequency of hospitalization (p = 0.033; 77.8%, CI 95%: 58.6%-97.0%) and had significantly more moderate/severe classifications in the acute phase than the subgroup with normal/mild impairment on CXR (p = 0.017; 88.9%, CI 95%: 74.4%-100%). In conclusion, the results of this study show that CXR is a relevant examination and may be used to detect nonspecific alterations during the follow-up of post-COVID-19 patients. Small airway disease is an important finding in postacute COVID-19 syndrome, and we postulate a connection between this pattern and the persistently low-level inflammatory state of the lung.

Hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis (hATTR) is a class of disorders with various systemic clinical manifestations, most often cardiac and neurologic in origin. The I127V mutation is a known but uncommon type of hATTR that typically affects males in their sixth or seventh decade of life. We present a case of this rare genetic variant with an atypical presentation of upper, followed by lower extremity sensorimotor polyneuropathy, with an uncharacteristic transthoracic echocardiogram (TTE) pattern but strongly positive pyrophosphate (PYP) scan, confirming the amyloidosis (AL) diagnosis.

Abstract Introduction Suicide attempts are the most predictive risk factor for suicide deaths. Most people who attempt suicide receive care from out-of-hospital Emergency Services (OES), where these requests are managed and classified. Objective Validate the Emergency Coordination Center (ECC) classification for the detection of suicidal behavior requests. Method A descriptive, cross-sectional study of requests to the ECC of Málaga (Spain) during 2013 and 2014 was conducted. To classify the requests, the authors considered the ECC categorization when answering the call and the clinical assessment of the healthcare professional when attending the person who had made the call at the scene, which was considered the reference standard. To analyze the validity of the ECC classification system, sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values (PPV and NPV) were calculated. Results The total number of requests for medical assistance analyzed was 112,599. The validity indicators of the classification system for suicidal behavior were sensitivity = 44.78%, specificity = 99.34%, PPV = 46.91% and NPV = 99.28%. Discussion and conclusion The ECC classification system has a lower capacity to detect the presence of suicidal behavior and a higher capacity to identify its absence in the requests received. OES provide key information on suicidal behavior requests as they can be one of the first places people with this problem go to. It would therefore be extremely useful to improve the classification systems for requests related to suicidal behavior.


Resumen Introducción Los intentos de suicidio constituyen el factor de riesgo más predictivo de todos los casos de suicidio consumado. La mayoría de las personas que intentan suicidarse reciben atención en los Servicios de Urgencias Extrahospitalarios (SUE) donde se gestionan y clasifican estas demandas. Objetivo Validar la clasificación del Centro Coordinador de Urgencias y Emergencias (CCUE) para detectar las demandas relacionadas con la conducta suicida. Método Se llevó a cabo un estudio descriptivo y transversal de las demandas al CCUE de Málaga (España) realizadas durante 2013 y 2014. Para su clasificación se tuvo en cuenta la categorización en el CCUE al responder la llamada y el juicio clínico del profesional sanitario cuando atiende al demandante in situ, considerando éste como patrón de referencia. Para evaluar la validez del sistema de clasificación se calcularon la sensibilidad, la especificidad y los valores predictivos positivo (VPP) y negativo (VPN). Resultados El total de demandas sanitarias analizadas fue de 112,599. Los indicadores de validez del sistema de clasificación para las demandas por conductas de suicidio fueron una sensibilidad = 44.78%, especificidad = 99.34%, VPP = 46.91% y VPN = 99.28%. Discusión y conclusión El sistema de clasificación del CCUE presenta una capacidad más baja para detectar presencia de conducta suicida comparada con una capacidad más alta para identificar su ausencia en las demandas recibidas. Los SUE aportan información relevante sobre las demandas por conducta suicida ya que pueden ser uno de los primeros lugares a los que acuden las personas con este problema. Por ello, sería de gran utilidad mejorar los sistemas de clasificación de las demandas por conducta suicida.

BACKGROUND: Bacterial infections are responsible of high economic losses in aquaculture. Mexican golden trout (Oncorhynchus chrysogaster) is a threatened native trout species that has been introduced in aquaculture both for species conservation and breeding for production and for which no studies of bacterial infections have been reported. CASE PRESENTATION: Fish from juvenile stages of Mexican golden trout showed an infectious outbreak in a farm in co-culture with rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), showing external puntiform red lesions around the mouth and caudal pedunculus resembling furuncles by Aeromonas spp. and causing an accumulated mortality of 91%. Isolation and molecular identification of bacteria from lesions and internal organs showed the presence of Aeromonas bestiarum, Aeromonas sobria, Plesiomonas shigelloides and Ichthyobodo necator isolated from a single individual. All bacterial isolates were resistant to amoxicillin-clavulanic acid and cefazoline. P. shigelloides was resistant to third generation ß-lactamics. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first report of coinfection by Aeromonas bestiarum, Aeromonas sobria, Plesiomonas shigelloides and Ichthyobodo necator in an individual of Mexican golden trout in co-culture with rainbow trout. Resistance to ß-lactams suggests the acquisition of genetic determinants from water contamination by human- or livestock-associated activities.

BACKGROUND: Athletes with spinal cord injury (SCI) have difficulties in maintaining thermal homeostasis during exercise due to their lower sweat capacity and skin vasodilation. Skin temperature (Tsk) assessment, as opposed to core temperature, has become more widely accepted due to its non-invasive nature. The aims of this systematic review was to collate research studies that measured Tsk of individuals with SCI during or after exercise, study their Tsk response, taking into account the method employed, the environmental and exercise conditions, and to identify the different cooling strategies and their effect during exercise. METHODS: Pubmed, Web of Science and Scopus databases were searched to identify the articles published since year 2000. Two reviewers working independently extracted data and assessed the quality of the articles included. If they disagreed, a third reviewer was consulted. ROBINS-I scale was used to assess the quality of the articles, and the review has been conducted in agreement with PRISMA guidelines. RESULTS: Twenty studies were included in this review. 84% of them presented moderate, serious or critical risk of bias. The entire of the studies assessed Tsk during exercise, but only seven studies measured it during rest or after exercise. Eighteen studies used contact thermometry to assess Tsk and the two remaining studies employed non-contact techniques. Seven studies were conducted in warm conditions (>31.5°C) and the remaining studies in moderate conditions (10°C to 26.6°C). According to cooling strategies, ice vests and water spray are effective in reducing Tsk and decreasing the risk of heat stroke. CONCLUSIONS: The 90% of the studies applied contact thermometry and due to their effect in the data assessed, it is necessary more research into the SCI population using infrared thermography due to its differences in characteristics, methodology, and applications. The methodological differences among studies make difficult to perform a meta-analysis.

Conversion of free-standing graphene into pure graphane─where each C atom is sp3 bound to a hydrogen atom─has not been achieved so far, in spite of numerous experimental attempts. Here, we obtain an unprecedented level of hydrogenation (≈90% of sp3 bonds) by exposing fully free-standing nanoporous samples─constituted by a single to a few veils of smoothly rippled graphene─to atomic hydrogen in ultrahigh vacuum. Such a controlled hydrogenation of high-quality and high-specific-area samples converts the original conductive graphene into a wide gap semiconductor, with the valence band maximum (VBM) ∼ 3.5 eV below the Fermi level, as monitored by photoemission spectromicroscopy and confirmed by theoretical predictions. In fact, the calculated band structure unequivocally identifies the achievement of a stable, double-sided fully hydrogenated configuration, with gap opening and no trace of π states, in excellent agreement with the experimental results.

The heart is a never-stopping engine that relies on a formidable pool of mitochondria to generate energy and propel pumping. Because dying cardiomyocytes cannot be replaced, this high metabolic rate creates the challenge of preserving organelle fitness and cell function for life. Here, we provide an immunologist's perspective on how the heart solves this challenge, which is in part by incorporating macrophages as an integral component of the myocardium. Cardiac macrophages surround cardiomyocytes and capture dysfunctional mitochondria that these cells eject to the milieu, effectively establishing a client cell-support cell interaction. We refer to this heterologous partnership as heterophagy. Notably, this process shares analogies with other biological systems, is essential for proteostasis and metabolic fitness of cardiomyocytes, and unveils a remarkable degree of dependence of the healthy heart on immune cells for everyday function.

The surface of aboveground plant parts, known as the phyllosphere, is a habitat for various microorganisms called epiphytes establishing biotrophic interactions with their hosts. However, these communities can be affected by environmental and anthropogenic variations such as the application of agrochemicals. Thus, epiphytes have the capacity to survive in such environments. In this study, we obtained the genome of Pseudomonas sp. 14A, an epiphyte isolated from the pepper phyllosphere. The phylogenomic analyses suggested that Pseudomonas sp. 14A may be novel species closely related to P. moraviensis R28-S. Notably, the metabolic pathways proposed consistent with epiphytic lifestyle in Pseudomonas sp. 14A, were shared with other species displaying a different degree of phylogenetic relatedness. Furthermore, variations in configuration of metabolic gene clusters were observed, that could expand microbial metabolic diversity in close relatedness species, highlighting the relevance of microbial diversity associated with plants.
