BACKGROUND: This study reports on the changes in stress, anxiety, and depressive symptoms of subscribers after 3 months using Text4Hope, a supportive text messaging program designed to provide support during the pandemic. METHODS: Standardized self-report measures were used to evaluate perceived stress (measured with the Perceived Stress Scale-10 (PSS-10)), anxiety (measured with the General Anxiety Disorder Scale 7 (GAD-7)), and depressive symptoms (measured with the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9)), at baseline and 3 months (n=373). RESULTS: After 3 months of using Text4Hope, subscribers' self-reports revealed significant (p<0.001) mean score reductions compared to baseline on: the GAD-7 by 22.7%, PHQ-9 by 10.3%, and PSS-10 scores by 5.7%. Reductions in inferred prevalence rates for moderate to high symptoms were also observed, with anxiety demonstrating the largest reduction (15.7%). CONCLUSIONS: Observed Text4Hope-related reductions in psychological distress during COVID-19 indicate that Text4Hope is an effective, convenient, and accessible means of implementing a population-level psychological intervention.

RESUMO

Recently, lateral flow assay (LFA) for nucleic acid detection has drawn increasing attention in the point-of-care testing fields. Due to its rapidity, easy implementation, and low equipment requirement, it is well suited for use in rapid diagnosis, food authentication, and environmental monitoring under source-limited conditions. This review will discuss two main research directions of lateral flow nucleic acid tests. The first one is the incorporation of isothermal amplification methods with LFA, which ensures an ultra-high testing sensitivity under non-laboratory conditions. The two most commonly used methodologies will be discussed, namely Loop-mediated Isothermal Amplification (LAMP) and Recombinase Polymerase Amplification (RPA), and some novel methods with special properties will also be introduced. The second research direction is the development of novel labeling materials. It endeavors to increase the sensitivity and quantifiability of LFA testing, where signals can be read and analyzed by portable devices. These methods are compared in terms of limits of detection, detection times, and quantifiabilities. It is anticipated that future research on lateral flow nucleic acid tests will focus on the integration of the whole testing process into a microfluidic system and the combination with molecular diagnostic tools such as clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats to facilitate a rapid and accurate test.

The development of catalytic conversion is very important for human society. In the catalytic process, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can be utilized to obtain effective catalysts for their porous structures and adjustable properties. In addition, the introduction of rare-earth (RE) elements with unique properties for catalysts can realize good catalytic performances. Thus, the RE-MOF related catalysts for catalytic conversion are summarized. Due to the cooperation of RE elements and porous MOF structures, the RE-based MOFs can be used as promising catalysts or precursors/supports for other catalysts in the areas of energy conversion, environmental governance, and organic synthesis. These aggregated studies highlight the RE-MOFs as promising candidates for catalytic conversion.

A robust polyaniline-assisted strategy is developed to construct a self-supported electrode constituting a nitrogen, phosphorus, sulfur tri-doped thin graphitic carbon layer encapsulated sulfur-doped molybdenum phosphide nanosheet array (NPSCL@S-MoP NSs/CC) with accessible nanopores, desirable chemical compositions, and stable composite structure for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The multiple electronic coupling effects of S-MoP with N, P, S tri-dopants afford effective regulation on their electrocatalytic performance by endowing abundant accessible active sites, outstanding charge-transfer property, and d-band center downshift with a thermodynamically favorable hydrogen adsorption free energy (ΔGH* ) for efficient hydrogen evolution catalysis. As a result, the NPSCL@S-MoP NSs/CC electrode exhibits overpotentials as low as 65, 114, and 49 mV at a geometric current density of 10 mA cm-2 and small Tafel slopes of 49.5, 69.3, and 53.8 mV dec-1 in 0.5 m H2 SO4 , 1.0 m PBS, and 1.0 m KOH, respectively, which could maintain 50 h of stable performance, almost outperforming all MoP-based catalysts reported so far. This study provides a valuable methodology to produce interacted multi-heteroatomic doped graphitic carbon-transition metal phosphide electrocatalysts with superior HER performance in a wide pH range.

Multimodal lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) has shown promise for improving both the flexibility and practicability of point-of-care test. We report here a facile, in situ growth method for preparing multifunctional core-shell-shell nano-sunflowers with a unique combination of color-magnetic-Raman properties. The use of Fe3O4 nanobeads with high saturation magnetization as the magnetic core allowed for robust magnetic signal strength-even after successive coatings of polydopamine and gold nanoparticles (Au NPs). Carefully selected 4-mercaptobenzonitrile molecules not only contributed to the growth of the Au NP shell but also generated a strong, surface-enhanced Raman scattering signal. The resulting nanomaterials were successfully used in the construction of multimodal LFIA with one qualitative and two alternative quantitative detection modes of different sensitivity levels. The limit of detection for the paradigm target-human chorionic gonadotropin-was 10 mIU/mL in color mode, 1.2 mIU/mL in magnetic mode, and 0.2 mIU/mL in Raman mode.

Gastric cancer (GC) is a malignancy with high incidence and mortality rates worldwide. It has a severe impact on patients diagnosed and on society. With the rapid development of bioinformatics and detection technologies, non­coding RNAs have been demonstrated to play important roles in gastric carcinogenesis, including circular RNAs (circRNAs) and long non­coding RNAs (lncRNAs). Previous studies have indicated that these two types of RNAs with notable characteristics can serve as promising biomarkers for clinical diagnosis and prognosis. The identification of relevant mechanisms has revealed the immense potential of circRNAs and lncRNAs in the treatment of GC. However, there are still numerous issues that need to be resolved. The present review focuses on the clinical translation of circRNAs and lncRNAs into GC. Important achievements and currently existing limitations in this field of research are summarized from recent studies. The present review also proposes serviceable suggestions for further development.

BACKGROUND: There is still little knowledge of objective suicide risk stratification. METHODS: This study aims to develop models using machine-learning approaches to predict suicide attempt (1) among survey participants in a nationally representative sample and (2) among participants with lifetime major depressive episodes. We used a cohort called the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC) that was conducted in two waves and included a nationally representative sample of the adult population in the United States. Wave 1 involved 43 093 respondents and wave 2 involved 34 653 completed face-to-face reinterviews with wave 1 participants. Predictor variables included clinical, stressful life events, and sociodemographic variables from wave 1; outcome included suicide attempt between wave 1 and wave 2. RESULTS: The model built with elastic net regularization distinguished individuals who had attempted suicide from those who had not with an area under the ROC curve (AUC) of 0.89, balanced accuracy 81.86%, specificity 89.22%, and sensitivity 74.51% for the general population. For participants with lifetime major depressive episodes, AUC was 0.89, balanced accuracy 81.64%, specificity 85.86%, and sensitivity 77.42%. The most important predictor variables were a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and being of Asian descent for the model in all participants; and previous suicide attempt, borderline personality disorder, and overnight stay in hospital because of depressive symptoms for the model in participants with lifetime major depressive episodes. Random forest and artificial neural networks had similar performance. CONCLUSIONS: Risk for suicide attempt can be estimated with high accuracy.

A 59-year-old woman presented with a 7-year history of facial numbness on the left side, and gradual worsening of symptoms. Over several years, facial muscle weakness, dysarthria, tongue atrophy and fasciculation had progressed. Then, she developed cerebellar ataxia affecting the left extremities, in addition to earlier symptoms. Brain MRI revealed cerebellar atrophy, and 99mTc-SPECT depicted cerebellar hypoperfusion. A repetitive nerve stimulation test (RNS) indicated abnormal decrement in the nasalis and trapezius muscles on the left side. Facial-onset sensory and motor neuronopathy (FOSMN) was diagnosed. Administration of intravenous immunoglobulin resulted in improvement of some symptoms. Although cerebellar ataxia is not a common symptom of FOSMN, a case showing TDP-43-positive glial cytoplasmic inclusions in cerebellar white matter has been reported. Therefore, it is possible that FOSMN may cause cerebellum impairment in some patients. Furthermore, RNS positive rate in the trapezius muscle is known to be high in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients. It is speculated that RNS of the affected muscles in FOSMN may show abnormal decrement by the same mechanisms as ALS.

Identifying cognitive dysfunction in the early stages of Bipolar Disorder (BD) can allow for early intervention. Previous studies have shown a strong correlation between cognitive dysfunction and number of manic episodes. The objective of this study was to apply machine learning (ML) techniques on a battery of cognitive tests to identify first-episode BD patients (FE-BD). Two cohorts of participants were used for this study. Cohort #1 included 74 chronic BD patients (CHR-BD) and 53 healthy controls (HC), while the Cohort #2 included 37 FE-BD and 18 age- and sex-matched HC. Cognitive functioning was assessed using the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB). The tests examined domains of visual processing, spatial memory, attention and executive function. We trained an ML model to distinguish between chronic BD patients (CHR-BD) and HC at the individual level. We used linear Support Vector Machines (SVM) and were able to identify individual CHR-BD patients at 77% accuracy. We then applied the model to Cohort #2 (FE-BD patients) and achieved an accuracy of 76% (AUC = 0.77). These results reveal that cognitive impairments may appear in early stages of BD and persist into later stages. This suggests that the same deficits may exist for both CHR-BD and FE-BD. These cognitive deficits may serve as markers for early BD. Our study provides a tool that these early markers can be used for detection of BD.

Nicosulfuron is a sulfonylurea family herbicide which is commonly applied together with the triazine herbicide atrazine in agricultural practice. However, whether nicosulfuron can influence the biodegradation of atrazine is unclear. Therefore, the influence of nicosulfuron on atrazine removal as well as on cell viability and transcription of atrazine chlorohydrolase gene (trzN) in Arthrobacter sp. DNS10 was investigated in this study. Our results demonstrated that 76.0% of atrazine was degraded in the absence of nicosulfuron after 48h of culture, whereas 63.9, 49.1 and 42.6% was degraded in the presence of 1, 5, and 10 mg/L of nicosulfuron, respectively. Nicosulfuron also induced an increase in the level of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), thereby damaging the cell membrane integrity and inhibiting the growth of the strain DNS10. Flow cytometry analysis revealed that the cell viability of strain DNS10 decreased with an increase in nicosulfuron concentration. The transcription of trzN in strain DNS10 exposed to the three described levels of nicosulfuron was 0.99, 0.72 and 0.52 times, respectively, that without nicosulfuron. In brief, nicosulfuron could inhibit atrazine removal efficiency by strain DNS10 by inducing the over-production of ROS which ultimately enhances the population of membrane-damaged cells, as well as reducing cell viability and trzN transcription. The outcomes of the present study provide new insights into the mechanism of nicosulfuron inhibition on atrazine biodegradation by strain DNS10.

Herein, La(OH)3 decorated magnetic porous biochar (MPBC) was synthesized via KHCO3 activation and hydrothermal processes. The La-to-MPBC mass ratio of 3:1 described as La3-MPBC possessed a monolayer phosphate adsorption capacity of 116.08 mg/g across a pH range of 3.0-6.0 with fast attainment of adsorption equilibrium in 150 min. Moreover, the phosphate adsorption was substantially stable during the interference of various co-existing ions with over 92% of phosphate removal and 77% of desorption efficiency maintained after four recycles. And La3-MPBC was easily separated by magnet force with negligible La and Fe leakages within the pH range of 3.0-10.0. Furthermore, La3-MPBC was supported to achieve phosphate binding through the synergistic actions of electrostatic attraction, ligand exchange, inner-sphere complexation and weak precipitation. Significantly, La3-MPBC exhibited a high performance for decontaminating low-concentration phosphate to meet regulatory requirements. All these results suggested La3-MPBC to be an ideal candidate for phosphate removal in real applications.

Memory dysfunction and associated hippocampal disturbances play crucial roles in cognitive impairment of schizophrenia. To examine the relationships between cognitive function and the hippocampal subfields (HSs) in first-episode never-treated (FENT) schizophrenia patients, the HSs were segmented in 39 FENT patients and 30 healthy controls using a state-of the-art automated algorithm. We found no significant differences in any HSs between the patients and controls. However, multivariate regression analysis showed that the left cornu ammonis 1 (CA1), left hippocampal tail, left presubiculum, and right molecular layer contributed 40% to the variance of the PANSS negative symptom score. After adjusting for sex, age, education, and intracranial volume, the partial correlation analysis showed that the volumes of left CA1, CA3, CA4, molecular layer, granule cell layer and both left and right subiculum were negatively correlated with the MATRICS consensus cognitive battery (MCCB) Hopkins Verbal Learning Test (HVLT). Multiple regression analysis showed that the left CA1 and CA3 hippocampal abnormalities contributed 66% to the variance of the HVLT. Our results suggest no detectable HS deficits were found in FENT schizophrenia patients. However, the HSs may be involved in the symptoms and cognitive deficits of schizophrenia patients in the early phase of their illness.

Depressive symptoms are common in patients with first-episode psychosis. However, the neural mechanisms underlying the comorbid depression in schizophrenia are still unknown. The main purpose of this study was to characterize the structural abnormalities of first-episodes drug-naïve (FEDN) schizophrenia comorbid with depression by utilizing both volume-based and surface-based morphometric measurements. Forty-two patients with FEDN schizophrenia and 29 healthy controls were recruited. The 24-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD-24) was administrated to divide all patients into depressive patients (DP) and non-depressive patients (NDP). Compared with NDP, DP had a significantly larger volume and surface area in the left isthmus cingulate cortex and also had a greater volume in the left posterior cingulate cortex. Correlation analysis showed that HAMD total score was positively correlated with the surface area of the left isthmus cingulate and gray matter volume of the left isthmus cingulate cortex. In addition, gray matter volume of the left isthmus cingulate was also correlated with the PANSS general psychopathology or total score. The findings suggest that prominent structural abnormalities of gray matter are mainly concentrated on the cingulate cortex in FEDN schizophrenia patients comorbid with depression, which may contribute to depressive symptoms and psychopathological symptoms.

BACKGROUND: In addition to the obvious medical (physical) impact of COVID-19, threats to mental health, psychological safety, and well-being are evident. Provision of support for these challenges is complicated by the high number of people requiring support and the need to maintain physical distancing. This motivated us to launch Text4Hope, a daily supportive texting messaging program, in Canada to mitigate the negative mental health impacts of the pandemic amongst Canadians. OBJECTIVE: This paper describes the changes in stress, anxiety, and depression levels after six weeks of exposure to daily supportive text messages. METHODS: We used self-administered, online, empirically-supported questionnaires to assess demographic and clinical characteristics of subscribers. Perceived stress, anxiety, and depression were measured with the Perceived Stress Scale-10 Items (PSS-10), the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) scale and the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) scale at baseline and sixth week time points. Moderate or high perceived stress, likely GAD and Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) were assessed using cut-off scores of PSS-10 ≥ 14, GAD-7 ≥ 10, and PHQ-9 ≥ 10, respectively. After six-weeks into the program, 766 participants completed the questionnaires at both time points. RESULTS: At the sixth week time-point, there were statistically significant reductions in mean scores on the PSS-10 and GAD-7 scales, but not the PHQ-9 scale. Effect sizes were small overall. There were statistically significant reductions in the prevalence rates for moderate or high stress, likely GAD, and likely MDD for the group that completed both the baseline and sixth week assessments. The biggest reduction in mean scores and prevalence rates was for anxiety; 18.7% and 13.5% respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Text4Hope is a convenient, cost-effective, and accessible means for implementing a population-level psychological intervention. This service demonstrated significant reduction in anxiety and stress during the COVD-19 pandemic and could be used as a population-level mental health intervention during natural disasters and other emergencies. Structural hippocampal abnormalities are common in many neurological and psychiatric disorders, and variation in hippocampal measures is related to cognitive performance and other complex phenotypes such as stress sensitivity. Hippocampal subregions are increasingly studied, as automated algorithms have become available for mapping and volume quantification. In the context of the Enhancing Neuro Imaging Genetics through Meta Analysis Consortium, several Disease Working Groups are using the FreeSurfer software to analyze hippocampal subregion (subfield) volumes in patients with neurological and psychiatric conditions along with data from matched controls. In this overview, we explain the algorithm's principles, summarize measurement reliability studies, and demonstrate two additional aspects (subfield autocorrelation and volume/reliability correlation) with illustrative data. We then explain the rationale for a standardized hippocampal subfield segmentation quality control (QC) procedure for improved pipeline harmonization. To guide researchers to make optimal use of the algorithm, we discuss how global size and age effects can be modeled, how QC steps can be incorporated and how subfields may be aggregated into composite volumes. This discussion is based on a synopsis of 162 published neuroimaging studies (01/2013-12/2019) that applied the FreeSurfer hippocampal subfield segmentation in a broad range of domains including cognition and healthy aging, brain development and neurodegeneration, affective disorders, psychosis, stress regulation, neurotoxicity, epilepsy, inflammatory disease, childhood adversity and posttraumatic stress disorder, and candidate and whole genome (epi-)genetics. Finally, we highlight points where FreeSurfer-based hippocampal subfield studies may be optimized.

In abnormal glycosylation, molecules of glucose or other carbohydrates in living organisms are inappropriately attached to proteins, which causes protein denaturation. Abnormal glycosylation modification is known to directly or indirectly affect the tumor escape process, but very few studies have been performed on whether protein glycosylation changes the structure and function of immune cells and immune molecules and thereby regulates the occurrence and development of tumor escape. Therefore, this article summarizes the effect of the immune system on tumor escape in association with the abnormal glycosylation process from an immunological perspective.

Optimizing the processing technology is an effective way to improve the yield of active ingredients for the industrial production of medicinal crops. Baikal Skullcap (Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi) is a perennial herb in the Lamiaceae family and its dried root is used as a famous traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Modern pharmacological studies have shown that the active ingredients of S. baicalensis have important pharmacological effects including anti-oxidation, anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-tumor, and anti-inflammation. Specifically, it is recently found that S. baicalensis has significant curative effects on the treatment of corona virus disease 2019 (COVID-19). In recent years, the market demand for the medicinal products of S. baicalensis is increasing because of its great medicinal values. However, the annual yield of active ingredients originated from the root of S. baicalensis is limited due to that little progress has been made on the traditional processing technology used in the extraction process. A pressing issue faced by both herbalists and scientists is how to improve the processing efficiency, thereby obtaining the maximum yield of products for S. baicalensis. In this study, a systematic analysis on the effects of growth years and post-harvest processing on the contents of medicinal active ingredients of S. baicalensis was conducted. The contents of eight active ingredients (baicalin, wogonoside, baicalein, wogonin, scutellarin, scutellarein, apigenin, and chrysin) in roots of S. baicalensis of different growth years (ranging from 1 year to 15 years) were estimated using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and further analyzed to determine the optimal harvest period. In particular, the contents of six active ingredients in different parts (cortex and stele) of the root of S. baicalensis were estimated and compared. Meanwhile, the dynamic changes of the contents of active ingredients in fresh-crush and fresh-cut roots of S. baicalensis at room temperature were compared and analyzed to reveal the influence of post-harvest treatment on the contents of active ingredients. In addition, the effects of six different post-harvest treatments on the contents of active ingredients were systematically designed and compared to determine the best primary processing technology. The results showed that the best harvesting period for S. baicalensis should be determined as 2-3 years based on comprehensive evaluation of active ingredient content, annual yield increment, and land use efficiency. The contents of active ingredients including baicalin, wogonoside, baicalein, and wogonin in cortex were significantly higher than those in stele (P ≤  0.05). The contents of baicalin, wogonoside, and scutellarin in fresh roots of S. baicalensis significantly reduced as the storage time increased, but the reduction of fresh-cutting was significantly lower than that of fresh-crushing. For the effects of different processing treatments, the contents of four main active ingredients (baicalin, wogonoside, baicalein, and wogonin) under drying (D) and cutting-drying (C-D) treatments were significantly higher than those of the other four treatments (P ≤  0.05). Collectively, the above results will not only provide novel processing methods that will improve the yield of active ingredients for S. baicalensis, but also shed light on the optimization of processing technology for the industrial production of medicinal crops.

Abnormalities within frontal lobe gray and white matter of bipolar disorder (BD) patients have been consistently reported in adult and pediatric studies, yet little is known about the neurochemistry of the anterior white matter (AWM) in pediatric BD and how medication status may affect it. The present cross-sectional 3T 1H MRS study is the first to use a multivoxel approach to study the AWM of BD youth. Absolute metabolite levels from four bilateral AWM voxels were collected from 49 subjects between the ages of 8 and 18 (25 healthy controls (HC); 24 BD) and quantified. Our study found BD subjects to have lower levels of N-acetylaspartate (NAA) and glycerophosphocholine plus phosphocholine (GPC + PC), metabolites that are markers of neuronal viability and phospholipid metabolism and have also been implicated in adult BD. Further analysis indicated that the observed patterns were mostly driven by BD subjects who were medicated at the time of scanning and had an ADHD diagnosis. Although limited by possible confounding effects of mood state, medication, and other mood comorbidities, these findings serve as evidence of altered neurochemistry in BD youth that is sensitive to medication status and ADHD comorbidity.

Background: Multislice spiral computed tomography (MSCT) playsa vital role in the diagnosis of bronchial foreign bodies in children. Bronchitis (pneumonia) can be caused by bronchial foreign bodies in children, which need to be diagnosed and treated by bronchoscopy. To understand the application of MSCT in children with bronchitis (pneumonia) suspected to be caused by bronchial foreign bodies, the clinical data of 162 children were analyzed retrospectively. Methods: The clinical data of 162 children with bronchitis (pneumonia) suspected to be caused by bronchial foreign bodies were collected, including sex, age, course of the disease, auscultation, chest X-ray, MSCT, bronchoscopy, among many others. Univariate logistic regression analysis analyzed the above other items, taking the finding of foreign bodies in bronchoscopy as the outcome index. The key variables of univariate analysis are included in multivariate logistic regression analysis to determine the independent influencing factors of bronchoscopy results. Results: Among the 162 patients, 70.4% were male, with the largest proportion of children aged 1-2 years (55.6%). The course of the disease of 98 cases (60.4%) was over14 days. A total of 111 cases (68.5%) showed positive auscultation, 110 cases (67.9%) showed positive chest fluoroscopy, 155 cases (95.7%) showed bronchial foreign bodies with MSCT, and the foreign bodies of 140 cases (86.4%) were removed by bronchoscopy. Univariate analysis showed that the course of the disease, chest auscultation, and MSCT were all correlated with the results of bronchoscopy. However, multivariate analysis showed, after adjusting the two factors of chest auscultation and chest fluoroscopy, the course of the disease (OR =6.01, 2.36-15.29, P<0.001) and MSCT (OR =95.64, 5.62-1,628.40, P<0.002) could still independently predict the results of bronchoscopy. Conclusions: MSCT can independently predict the results of bronchoscopy in children with bronchitis(pneumonia) suspected to be caused by bronchial foreign bodies.
