OBJECTIVE: This study explored the changes of global public interest in internet search of ankylosing spondylitis (AS) based on Google Trends (GT) data, in order to reflect the characteristics of AS itself. METHODS: GT was used to obtain the search popularity scores of the term 'AS' on a global scale, between January 2004 and December 2018, under the 'health' classification. Based on the global search data of AS provided by GT, the cosinor analysis was used to test whether there was seasonality in AS. RESULTS: In general, AS related search volume demonstrated a decreasing trend from January 2004 to December 2014 and then remain stable from January 2015 to December 2018. No obvious seasonal variations were detected in AS related search volume (amplitude=1.54; phase: month=3.9; low point: month=9.9; p>0.025), which peaked in April and bottomed out in October. The top 17 rising topics were adalimumab, spondylolisthesis, Morbus, Vladimir Mikhailovich Bekhterev, autoimmune disease, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosis, HLA- B27 positive, Crohn's disease, rheumatology, spondylosis, arthritis, uveitis, rheumatism, sacroiliac, psoriatic arthritis and spondylitis. CONCLUSIONS: Globally, there is no significant seasonal variation in GT for AS. The top fast-growing topics related to AS may be beneficial for doctors to provide targeted health education of the disease to patients and their families.

Biological thiols including homocysteine (Hcy), cysteine (Cys), hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and glutathione (GSH) play crucial roles in various pathological and physiological processes. The development of optical probes for biothiols has been an active research area in recent years. Herein, a new turn-on fluorescence probe (HD-NBD) was designed and synthesized by fusing tetrahydro[5]helicene and 7-nitro-2,1,3-benzoxadiazole (NBD) for simultaneous discrimination of Hcy/Cys, H2S and GSH in aqueous solution. This probe is able to show unique absorbance enhancement at 548 nm for H2S and additional fluorescence enhancement at 536 nm only for Cys/Hcy, which can be used to discriminate H2S, Cys/Hcy and GSH simultaneously. In addition, HD-NBD also shows low background without any self-fluorescence, as well as high selectivity toward common biothiols. The low detection limits of this probe are about 0.15 µM for Hcy with a wide linear range (1-80 µM), 0.36 µM for Cys (linear range: 1-45 µM), 0.79 µM for H2S (linear range: 1-80 µM) and 4.44 µM for GSH (linear range: 1-60 µM). Moreover, HD-NBD can identify Hcy/Cys, H2S from GSH and other amino acids with high sensitivity and selectivity, therefore it could be used for detecting endogenous and exogenous Hcy/Cys under biological condition.

Aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR), a type of transcriptional factor, is widely expressed in immune cells. The activation of AhR signaling pathway depends on its ligands, which exist in environment and can also be produced by metabolism. Normal expressions of AhR and AhR-mediated signaling may be essential for immune responses, and effects of AhR signaling on the development and function of innate and adaptive immune cells have also been revealed in previous studies. Recent studies also indicate that aberrant AhR signaling may be related to autoimmune diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), multiple sclerosis (MS), autoimmune uveitis (AU), autoimmune diabetes, Behcet's disease (BD) and myasthenia gravis (MG). Moreover, administration of AhR ligands or drugs has been proven effective for improving pathological outcomes in some autoimmune diseases or models. In this review, we summarize the effects of AhR on several innate and adaptive immune cells associated with autoimmunity, and the mechanism on how AhR participates in autoimmune diseases. In addition, we also discuss therapeutic potential and application prospect of AhR in autoimmune diseases, so as to provide valuable information for exploring novel and effective approaches to autoimmune disease treatments.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic, elusive disorder resulting in relapsing inflammation of intestine with incompletely elucidated etiology, whose two representative forms are ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD). Accumulating researches have revealed that the individual genetic susceptibility, environmental risk elements, intestinal microbial flora, as well as innate and adaptive immune system are implicated in the pathogenesis and development of IBD. Despite remarkable progression of IBD therapy has been achieved by chemical drugs and biological therapies such as aminosalicylates, corticosteroids, antibiotics, anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, anti-integrin agents, etc., healing outcome still cannot be obtained, along with inevitable side effects. Consequently, a variety of researches have focused on exploring new therapies, and found that natural products (NPs) isolated from herbs or plants may serve as promising therapeutic agents for IBD through antiinflammatory, anti-oxidant, anti-fibrotic and anti-apoptotic effects, which implicates the modulation on nucleotide- binding domain (NOD) like receptor protein (NLRP) 3 inflammasome, gut microbiota, intestinal microvascular endothelial cells, intestinal epithelia, immune system, etc. In the present review, we will summarize the research development of IBD pathogenesis and current mainstream therapy, as well as the therapeutic potential and intrinsic mechanisms of NPs in IBD.

Based on the ozone monitoring instrument (OMI)/Aura L2 OMAERUV data from 2008 to 2017, the spatial-temporal distribution of absorptive aerosols during the past 10 years were studied. The results are as follows. ① In the temporal distribution, the inter-annual variation of absorptive aerosol optical depth (AAOD) first increased and then decreased, reaching the highest value of 0.056 in 2011; this is consistent with the aerosol optical depth (AOD) of 0.702 in the Yangtze River Delta. The inter-monthly variation shows that the high value of AAOD appeared mostly in January, March, and June and increased significantly from November to January. ② In the spatial distribution, the AAOD was higher in the north than in the south in the Yangtze River Delta, and the AOD was similar to the AAOD. High values of AAOD above 0.05 were concentrated mainly in northern Anhui and Jiangsu provinces and in Nanjing, Hangzhou, and Jinhua. The seasonal spatial distribution of AAOD and AOD was higher in spring and winter and lower in autumn, although the AOD was very high and the AAOD was low in summer. The contribution of black carbon in the Yangtze River Delta was consistent with the annual spatial distribution of the AAOD and AOD.

RESUMO

White-light-emitting Ag, Mn: Zn-Ga-S/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) with a gratifying photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield (QY) of up to 90% were prepared, and shown to be ultra-stable, maintaining a high PL intensity at 300 °C or for 32 h of UV illumination. These QDs were employed in a white QD-LED displaying a color rendering index (CRI) of 72 and maximum current efficiency of 0.22 cd A-1.

In situ transmission electron microscopy has achieved remarkable advances for atomic-scale dynamic analysis in low-dimensional materials and become an indispensable tool in view of linking a material's microstructure to its properties and performance. Here, accompanied with some cutting-edge researches worldwide, we briefly review our recent progress in dynamic atomistic characterization of low-dimensional materials under external mechanical stress, thermal excitations and electrical field. The electron beam irradiation effects in metals and metal oxides are also discussed. We conclude by discussing the likely future developments in this area.

Introduction: Autoimmune diseases (ADs) are idiopathic and heterogeneous disorders with contentious pathophysiology. Great strides have been made in epigenetics and its involvement in ADs. Zeste homolog 2 (EZH2) has sparked extensive interest because of its pleiotropic roles in distinct pathologic contexts.Areas covered: This review summarizes the epigenetic functions and the biological significance of EZH2 in the etiology of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), type 1 diabetes (T1D), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), multiple sclerosis (MS), and systemic sclerosis (SSc). A brief recapitulation of the therapeutic potential of EZH2 targeting is provided.Expert opinion: There are questions marks and controversies surrounding the feasibility and safety of EZH2 targeting; it is recommended in RA and SLE, but queried in T1D, IBD, MS, and SSc. Future work should focus on contrast studies, systematic analyses and preclinical studies with optimizing methodologies. Selective research studies conducted in a stage-dependent manner are necessary because of the relapsing-remitting clinical paradigms.

Inorganic interfacial buffer layers have widely been employed for efficient and long lifetime optoelectronic devices due to their high carrier mobility and excellent chemical/thermal stability. In this paper, we developed a solution-processed inorganic tungsten phosphate (TPA) as hole injection layer (HIL) in inverted quantum dot light-emitting diodes (QLEDs) achieving a high external quantum efficiency (EQE) of up to ∼20%. Further, the copper ions are doped into tungsten phosphate (Cu:TPA) which leads to an enhancement in hole injection due to increased hole mobility and conductivity of TPA as well as decreased hole injection barrier, enabling better charge balance in QLEDs and lower turn-on voltage from 5 to 2.5 V. Compared with the devices using conventional organic poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene-sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) HIL, the half-lifetime of Cu:TPA-based devices is over 3000 h at an initial brightness of 100 cd m-2, almost 5-fold operating lifetime enhancement.

L2 processing is shaped by L1 experience; however, it is not completely understood whether L1 reading experience also influences how the brain learns L2 under different learning conditions. In this study, we compare brain mechanisms of Spanish word learning in Chinese and English speakers using two learning conditions: speech-based learning and handwriting-based learning. The behavioral data suggest an advantage for learning that uses handwriting over speech-based learning across all participants. Furthermore, brain imaging data reveal that English speakers show greater functional connectivity among phonological regions in the handwriting condition than the speech-based condition during a silent phonological recall task. This suggests that, for English speakers specifically, handwriting further enhanced the phonological network. Interestingly, Chinese speakers showed an opposite pattern, with greater functional connectivity among phonological regions in the speech-based condition than the handwriting condition. Moreover, it was found that Chinese speakers with higher reading skills in their native L1 tended to engage the right fusiform to a greater degree by connecting to phonological regions in the handwriting condition. Thus, the handwriting-based learning engaged visuo-orthographic regions to a greater degree in highly skilled Chinese speakers. In summary, the current findings suggest that handwriting facilitates lexical learning by enhancing orthographic involvement in Chinese speakers, while the handwriting condition enhanced phonological involvement in English speakers. This difference between Chinese and English speakers might be due to different L1 learning experience.

P2X7 receptor (P2X7R), a distinct ligand-gated ion channel, is a member of purinergic type 2 receptor family with ubiquitous expression in human body. Previous studies have revealed a pivotal role of P2X7R in innate and adaptive immunity. Once activated, it will meditate some vital cascaded responses including the assembly of nucleotide-binding domain (NOD) like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome, non-classical secretion of IL-1ß, modulation of cytokine-independent pathways in inflammation such as P2X7R- transglutaminase-2 (TG2) and P2X7R-cathepsin pathway, activation and regulation of T cells, etc. In fact, above responses have been identified to be involved in the development of autoimmunity, specifically, the NLRP3 inflammasome could promote inflammation in massive autoimmune diseases and TG2, as well as cathepsin may contribute to joint destruction and degeneration in inflammatory arthritis. Recently, numerous evidences further suggested the significance of P2X7R in the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases, including systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), multiple sclerosis (MS), etc. In this review, we will succinctly discuss the biological characteristics and summarize the recent progress of the involvement of P2X7R in the development and pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases, as well as its clinical implications and therapeutic potential.

As an important research topic of surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), periodic metal nanoarrays have attracted remarkable attention due to their superior properties, such as excellent enhancing ability, and high structural homogeneity and stability. In this work, periodic Au nanostructures with variable repetitive unit size, Au nanoparticle size, and gap sizes are fabricated by electron beam lithography on SiO2/Si substrates to investigate the influence of these structural parameters on SERS performances. The SERS intensity is found to increase linearly with decreasing repetitive unit size (increase of Au nanoparticle number density), while shows no obvious dependence on the Au nanoparticle size. A SERS enhancement factor of 6.6 × 105 is obtained for Au arrays with a repetitive unit size of 200 nm. The gap size does not affect the SERS intensity when it is over 75 nm, and exhibits an obvious enhancement effect when it is below 25 nm. A linear quantitative relationship between the Raman intensity and analyte concentrations of R6G, as well as a limit of detection of 10-11 mol/L was achieved for an Au nanoparticle array with gap size of 25 nm.

Quantum efficiencies of organic-inorganic hybrid lead halide perovskite light-emitting devices (LEDs) have increased significantly, but poor device operational stability still impedes their further development and application. All-inorganic perovskites show better stability than the hybrid counterparts, but the performance of their respective films used in LEDs is limited by the large perovskite grain sizes, which lowers the radiative recombination probability and results in grain boundary related trap states. We realize smooth and pinhole-free, small-grained inorganic perovskite films with improved photoluminescence quantum yield by introducing trifluoroacetate anions to effectively passivate surface defects and control the crystal growth. As a result, efficient green LEDs based on inorganic perovskite films achieve a high current efficiency of 32.0 cd A-1 corresponding to an external quantum efficiency of 10.5%. More importantly, our all-inorganic perovskite LEDs demonstrate a record operational lifetime, with a half-lifetime of over 250 h at an initial luminance of 100 cd m-2.

RATIONALE: Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) was termed by Hinchey in 1996. Patients have a reversible vasogenic brain edema in imaging and acute neurological symptoms such as headache, seizures, encephalopathy, and visual disturbances when suffering from hypertension, pre-eclampsia/eclampsia, renal failure, immunosuppressive medications, autoimmune disorders, sepsis, thrombocytopaenia, hypocalcaemia, alcohol withdrawal, and many other potential causes. de Havenon A et al have proposed a new syndrome named PRES with spinal cord involvement (PRES-SCI). The patients with PRES-SCI have similar symptoms these of PRES. Patients have neurologic signs with the spinal cord involved and lesions in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) extending to the cervicomedullary junction, usually with extreme elevation in blood pressure and a history of hypertensive retinopathy. We administrated a young patient whose condition was consistent with PRES-SCI except for the hemisphere lesions. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 20-year-old Asian male patient was admitted for a 1 week history of blurred vision and weakness of the limbs. He has had poorly controlled hypertension for 1 year before admission. In emergency room, his blood pressure could raise to 260/140mmHg. Neurological examinations and cerebral spinal fluid tests were negative. The MRI of the brain and spinal cord showed reversible lesions in the medulla and upper cervical spinal cord that extended to the lower thoracic spine. DIAGNOSIS: Taking into account the characteristic lesions in the MRI as well as the reversible course upon treatment, he was diagnosed PRES-SCI. INTERVENTIONS: He was treated with medicines for the hypertension. OUTCOMES: His symptoms rapidly improved and finally the lesions on the MRI of the brain and spianl cord disappeared. LESSONS: Clinicians should suspect PRES-SCI when patients have mild or no neurologic signs accompanied with extreme elevation in blood pressure and lesions in spinal cord. Spinal lesions alone may be a subtype of PRES-SCI.

Despite the rapid development in quantum-dot light-emitting diodes (QD-LEDs) with a single junction, it remains a big challenge to make tandem QD-LEDs with high performance. Here, we report solution-processed double-junction tandem QD-LEDs with a high external quantum efficiency of 42.2% and a high current efficiency of 183.3 cd A-1, which are comparable to those of the best vacuum-deposited tandem organic LEDs. Such high-efficiency devices are achieved by interface engineering of fully optimized single light-emitting units, which improves carriers' transport/injection balance and suppresses exciton quenching induced by ZnO, and design of an effective interconnecting layer consisting of poly(4-butylphenyl-diphenylamine) (poly-TPD)-mixed poly(9-vinylcarbazole) (PVK)/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrene sulfonate/polyethylenimine ethoxylated-modified ZnO.

There is currently debate with regards to the role of phonological deficit in Chinese reading difficulty, even though some researchers have suggested that the deficit of phonological processing is also a signature of developmental dyslexia in Chinese, as has been found in alphabetic languages. In this study, we examined the brain mechanisms of phonological deficit in Chinese children with developmental dyslexia (DD) during an auditory rhyming judgment task. First, we examined structural differences in Chinese dyslexia by comparing gray and white matter volume in Chinese children with DD, age-matched controls (AC), and reading-matched controls (RC). Next, we examined whether the regions with an abnormal volume in DD showed deficient functional connectivity with the rest of the brain during a phonological task (i.e. auditory rhyming judgment). We found that both AC and RC had greater gray matter volume (GMV) at the left putamen and right dorsal lateral frontal cortex than DD, suggesting possible neural signatures of developmental dyslexia. Functional connectivity analysis revealed that the left putamen was more connected with the right inferior occipital gyrus (IOG) in AC and RC than in DD, suggesting that automatic orthographic involvement during spoken language processing is more salient in controls, while the left putamen was more connected with the left transverse temporal gyrus (TTG) and left insula in DD than in AC and RC, suggesting the phonological articulation -auditory feedback loop is more involved in DD. These findings suggest that the reduced left putamen might contribute to phonological deficits experienced in DD, since it showed deficient connectivity with the rest of the brain during phonological processing.

Both native language background and second-language proficiency may shape brain responses to a second language. Using cross-modal mismatch negativity (MMN) (pre-attentive processing) and audiovisual P300 (attentive processing) paradigms, this study examined how native Chinese speakers with various second-language proficiency responded to English letter-sound integration and what role visual attention may play in this process. The results indicated that native Chinese speakers failed to integrate letters and sounds in pre-attentive stage of reading, regardless of their English proficiency level, in contrast to the successful letter-sound integration shown by native English speakers. With more explicit visual attention resources, native Chinese speakers integrated English letters and sounds just as successfully as native English speakers did. These findings suggest that native language background may exert profound constraints on automatic brain responses to a second language, and attention may help the brain overcome these constraints and respond as required by the second language.

OBJECTIVES: The natural triterpenoid compound celastrol ameliorates insulin resistance (IR) in animal models, but the underlying molecular mechanism is unclear. In this study, we investigated how celastrol regulates IR. METHODS: The HepG2 cellular IR model was initially established with palmitic acid (PA). The expression and activity of glucose transporter 4 (GLUT4), insulin receptor substrate-1 (IRS1) and 9 microRNAs (miRNAs) (miR-7, -34a, -96, -113, -126, -145, -150, -223 and -370) were detected before and after celastrol treatment using the PA-induced HepG2 IR model. RESULTS: The results showed that 250 µM PA for ≥2 days was optimal for inducing IR in HepG2 cells; 600 nM celastrol significantly attenuated the PA-induced IR in HepG2 cells. The PA-induced GLUT4 and IRS1 downregulation and Ser307 phosphorylation on IRS1 was reversed by subsequent treatment with 600 nM celastrol for 6 h. We next investigated which IR-related miRNAs were possible upstream regulators of celastrol-mediated reversal of PA-induced HepG2 IR. Two miRNAs, miR-150 and -223, were significantly downregulated by PA and were re-raised by subsequent celastrol treatment; and miR-223 was upstream of miR-150. Moreover, knocking down miR-223 abolished celastrol's anti-IR effects in the PA-induced model. CONCLUSIONS: Collectively, our results demonstrated that celastrol reverses PA-induced IR-related alterations, in part via miR-223 in HepG2 cells. Further investigation is warranted for establishing the clinical potential of celastrol in treating IR-related disorders.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of comprehensive therapy based on Chinese medicine (CM) patterns on self-efficacy and satisfaction with its effectiveness in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). METHODS: A total of 216 patients were randomly divided into the trial group (n =108) and the control group (n=108) based on the stratified and block randomization design. Patients in the trial group were treated with conventional Western medicine combined with Bufei Jianpi Granules (), Bufei Yishen Granules (), and Yiqi Zishen Granules () according to the CM patterns respectively, and patients in the control group were treated with conventional Western medicine. The COPD Self-Efficacy Scale (CSES) and the Effectiveness Satisfaction Questionnaire for COPD (ESQ-COPD) were employed in a 6-month treatment and in further 6 month follow-up visit. RESULTS: Among the 216 patients, 191 patients (97 in the trial group and 94 in the control group) fully completed the study. After 12-month treatment and follow-up, the mean scores of the trial group all continued to increase over time, which were significantly higher than those of the control group (P <0.05), and the improvement in the following trial group domain: negative affect domain (12.13%), intense emotional arousal domain (12.21%), physical exertion domain (11.72%), weather/environmental domain (13.77%), behavioral risk domain (7.67%) and total score (10.65%). The trial group also exhibited significantly higher mean scores in the ESQ-COPD (P <0.05) and the improvement in the following domain: capacity for life and work domain (30.59%), clinical symptoms domain (53.52%), effect of therapy domain (35.95%), convenience of therapy domain (35.54%), and whole effect domain (52.47%). CONCLUSIONS: Bufei Jianpi Granules, Bufei Yishen Granules and Yiqi Zishen Granules can improve the self-efficacy and satisfaction of COPD patients.
