BACKGROUND: Preterm infants with long-term parenteral nutrition (PN) therapy are at risk for cholestasis associated with total parenteral nutrition (PNAC). This study examined the safety and efficacy of ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) in preventing PNAC in preterm infants. Our research aimed to investigate the prophylactic effect of preventive oral UDCA on PNAC in preterm infants. METHODS: We compared oral administration of UDCA prophylaxis with no prophylaxis in a randomized, open-label, proof-of-concept trial in preterm neonates with PN therapy. The low-birth-weight preterm infants (< 1800 g) who were registered to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) within 24 hours after birth were randomized. The main endpoint was the weekly values of direct bilirubin (DB) of neonates during the NICU stay. RESULTS: Eventually, a total of 102 preterm neonates from January 2021 to July 2021 were enrolled in this prospective study (42 in the UDCA group and 60 in the control group). Notably, the peak serum level of DB [13.0 (12-16) vs. 15.2 (12.5-19.6) µmol/L, P < 0.05)] was significantly lower in the UDCA group than that in the control group without prevention. The peak serum level of total bilirubin (101.1 ± 34 vs. 116.5 ± 28.7 µmol/L, P < 0.05) was also significantly lower in the UDCA group than in the control group. Furthermore, the proportion of patients who suffered from neonatal cholestasis (0.0% vs. 11.7%, P < 0.05) in the UDCA group was significantly lower. CONCLUSION: UDCA prophylaxis is beneficial in preventing PNAC in NICU infants receiving prolonged PN.

Introduction: The adjuvant treatment of patients with resected lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) remains unstandardized. We analyzed the survival outcomes of these patients based on EGFR mutation status and adjuvant chemotherapy treatment. Methods: This noninterventional real-world study (ICAN) enrolled Chinese patients with resected stages I to III LUAD from April 8, 2010, to December 31, 2010. Tumor EGFR mutation status and 3-year disease-free survival (DFS) were determined. The extension phase provided long-term follow-up with overall survival (OS) as the primary end point. Secondary end points included DFS and prognostic factors of survival. Survival outcomes based on adjuvant chemotherapy treatment, EGFR mutation status, and postoperative stage were analyzed post hoc. Results: Among 568 patients in the ICAN cohort, 472 continued to the extension phase and remained eligible. The 3-year DFS rate was 58.8%. In the extension cohort, 260 patients (55.1%) had EGFR-mutant disease and 207 (43.9%) received adjuvant chemotherapy. At a median follow-up of 109.0 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 106.6-111.4) months, median OS and DFS were 103.3 (95% CI: 101.7-104.9) and 67.4 (95% CI: 49.7-85.2) months, respectively. The 5-year OS and DFS rates were 68.9% (95% CI: 64.3-73.6) and 52.9% (95% CI: 48.2-57.7), respectively. EGFR wild-type disease was a significant independent predictor of worse OS (HR = 1.24, 95% CI: 1.07-1.44, p= 0.004) based on the Cox regression analysis of common factors. Post hoc subgroup analysis revealed that survival outcomes were not significantly different with adjuvant chemotherapy regardless of EGFR mutation status across all postoperative stages. Conclusions: EGFR mutations are common in operable LUAD, and recurrence and mortality after resection were considerable. Adjuvant chemotherapy did not improve survival outcomes, regardless of EGFR mutation status and postoperative stage.

ABSTRACT: Basaloid follicular hamartoma (BFH) is a rare, benign follicular neoplasm which typically presents as brown to skin-colored papules on the face, scalp, and trunk. Histologically, BFH consists of cords and strands of basaloid cells forming cystic structures with scant stroma and should be distinguished from infundibulocystic basal cell carcinoma to avoid overly aggressive treatment. Although BFH has been found to be associated with distinct syndromes, including alopecia, myasthenia gravis, and cystic fibrosis, there is often clinical, histopathologic, and genetic overlap with nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS). In this article, we describe a case of a 13-year-old patient with NBCCS who presented with multiple BFHs and propose that it its inclusion into the diagnostic criteria for NBCCS be considered.

Viruses cause severe damage on crops, and identification of key gene(s) that can comprehensively activate antiviral immunity will provide insights for designing effective antiviral strategies. Salicylic acid (SA)-mediated antiviral immunity and RNA interference (RNAi) are two independently discovered antiviral pathways. Previously, we identified the orchid stress-associated protein (SAP), Pha13, which serves as a hub in SA-mediated antiviral immunity. As SAPs exist as a protein family, whether duplicated SAPs have redundant or distinctive functions in antiviral immunity remains elusive. We performed functional assays on orchid Pha21, a homolog of Pha13, using transient and transgenic approaches on orchid, Arabidopsis and Nicotiana benthamiana to overexpress and/or silence Pha21. The SA treatment induced the expression of both Pha13 and Pha21, whereas Pha21 was found to play a key role in the initiation of the RNAi pathway in Phalaenopsis orchids. We demonstrated that Pha21-mediated antiviral immunity and enhancement of the RNAi pathway is conserved between dicotyledons and monocotyledons. We provide new insight that orchid SAPs confer distinctive functions to coordinate both SA-signaling and RNAi for comprehensive activation of antiviral immunity, and this information will help us develop antiviral strategies on crops.

BACKGROUND: In long-term care facilities, there are frequent conflicts related to elderly residents' sexual expression. Nurse aides usually handle such conflicts with negative or negligent attitudes; therefore, elderly sexuality is considered "problem behavior" and is stigmatized. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to improve elderly residents' quality of sexual life by enhancing nurse aides' knowledge and attitudes toward elderly sexuality through sexuality workshops. METHODS: A quasi-experimental study was conducted with 64 nurse aides and 58 residents, who were divided into two groups, i.e., an experimental group and a control group, according to the floor where the residents resided. The nurse aides in the experimental group participated in sexuality workshops and were compared with those in the control group with respect to their knowledge of and attitudes toward sexuality; the residents' quality of sexual life was also compared between groups. RESULTS: Compared with the control group, in the experimental group, the nurse aides' knowledge of and attitudes toward elderly sexuality as well as the residents' quality of sexual life significantly and continually improved after the sexuality workshops. CONCLUSION: The four-week sexuality workshop is effective and may be used as an example in developing occupational education programs regarding elderly sexuality in long-term care facilities.

Memory consolidation is a time-dependent process through which an unstable learned experience is transformed into a stable long-term memory; however, the circuit and molecular mechanisms underlying this process are poorly understood. The Drosophila mushroom body (MB) is a huge brain neuropil that plays a crucial role in olfactory memory. The MB neurons can be generally classified into three subsets: γ, αß, and α'ß'. Here, we report that water-reward long-term memory (wLTM) consolidation requires activity from α'ß'-related mushroom body output neurons (MBONs) in a specific time window. wLTM consolidation requires neurotransmission in MBON-γ3ß'1 during the 0-2 h period after training, and neurotransmission in MBON-α'2 is required during the 2-4 h period after training. Moreover, neurotransmission in MBON-α'1α'3 is required during the 0-4 h period after training. Intriguingly, blocking neurotransmission during consolidation or inhibiting serotonin biosynthesis in serotoninergic dorsal paired medial (DPM) neurons also disrupted the wLTM, suggesting that wLTM consolidation requires serotonin signals from DPM neurons. The GFP Reconstitution Across Synaptic Partners (GRASP) data showed the connectivity between DPM neurons and MBON-γ3ß'1, MBON-α'2, and MBON-α'1α'3, and RNAi-mediated silencing of serotonin receptors in MBON-γ3ß'1, MBON-α'2, or MBON-α'1α'3 disrupted wLTM. Taken together, our results suggest that serotonin released from DPM neurons modulates neuronal activity in MBON-γ3ß'1, MBON-α'2, and MBON-α'1α'3 at specific time windows, which is critical for the consolidation of wLTM in Drosophila.

With the increasing application of pharmacophore-based virtual screening in computer-aided drug design, it is possible to employ this technology in the modernization of Chinese medicine. Based on the systematic research method of the pharmacophore model, the present study systematically reviewed the pharmacophore-based technologies and strategies in the identification of active components in Chinese medicine.

PURPOSE: Reconstruction plates are frequently used to treat mandibular segmental defects. The aim of this study is to compare the biomechanical performance of a 3-dimensional-printed self-designed titanium alloy reconstruction plate with that of the traditional reconstruction plate in mandible reconstruction. The analyzed parameters of the self-designed reconstruction plate, including plate length (100 mm and 125 mm), plate thickness (2.1, 2.4, and 2.7 mm), and bone mass (100, 75, and 50%), were also evaluated. METHODS: An artificial mandible with anatomical geometry was used to develop the self-designed reconstructed plate. Both in vitro experiments and finite element simulations were performed for the biomechanical comparison of the self-designed and traditional reconstruction plates. In finite element analysis, 3 major muscle forces of mandible movement were set as the loading condition, and the displacement of the condyle was fixed in all directions as the boundary condition. RESULTS: The biomechanical performances (stresses in the plate and strains in bone) of the self-designed reconstruction plate were superior to those of the traditional plate. Factorial analysis indicated that plate length and thickness had significant effects on decreasing stresses of the plate and mandibular bone. CONCLUSIONS: The self-designed reconstruction plate might have a benefit to reduce the stresses/strains in plate itself and surrounding bone.

This study was designed to probe into the improvement of rehabilitation training combined with Jiaji electroacupuncture intervention on patients with upper limb peripheral nerve injury. A total of 114 patients with peripheral nerve injury of upper limbs in our hospital from August 2017 to November 2019 were collected as the research participants. Among them, 59 in the control group (CG) received rehabilitation training alone, while 65 in the observation group (OG) received rehabilitation training combined with Jiaji electroacupuncture intervention. The therapeutic efficacy, Barthel index, and Fugl-Meyer assessment score, motor nerve conduction velocity, sensory nerve conduction velocity and amplitude, and quality of life (score SF-36) were compared between the two groups before and after treatment. The total effective rate of the OG was markedly higher than that of the CG. After treatment, the Barthel index, Fugl-Meyer assessment score, motor nerve conduction velocity, and sensory nerve conduction velocity and amplitude of the OG were obviously higher than those of the CG, and the SF-36 scores of the OG were higher than those of the CG in 8 dimensions. Rehabilitation training combined with Jiaji electroacupuncture intervention can dramatically promote the recovery of muscle group function and improve the quality of life of patients with upper limb peripheral nerve injury.

Several C2 domain-containing proteins play key roles in tumorigenesis, signal transduction, and mediating protein-protein interactions. Tandem C2 domains nuclear protein (TC2N) is a tandem C2 domain-containing protein that is differentially expressed in several types of cancers and is closely associated with tumorigenesis and tumor progression. Notably, TC2N has been identified as an oncogene in lung and gastric cancer but as a tumor suppressor gene in breast cancer. Recently, a large number of tumor-associated antigens (TAAs), such as heat shock proteins, alpha-fetoprotein, and carcinoembryonic antigen, have been identified in a variety of malignant tumors. Differences in the expression levels of TAAs between cancer cells and normal cells have led to these antigens being investigated as diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers and as novel targets in cancer treatment. In this review, we summarize the clinical characteristics of TC2N-positive cancers and potential mechanisms of action of TC2N in the occurrence and development of specific cancers. This article provides an exploration of TC2N as a potential target for the diagnosis and treatment of different types of cancers.

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most common malignant primary neoplasm of the adult central nervous system originating from glial cells. The prognosis of those affected by GBM has remained poor despite advances in surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. Photochemical internalization (PCI) is a release mechanism of endocytosed therapeutics into the cytoplasm, which relies on the membrane disruptive effect of light-activated photosensitizers. In this study, phototherapy by PCI was performed on a human GBM cell-line using the topoisomerase II inhibitor etoposide (Etop) and the photosensitizer protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) loaded in nanospheres (Ns) made from generation-5 polyamidoamine dendrimers (PAMAM(G5)). The resultant formulation, Etop/PpIX-PAMAM(G5) Ns, measured 217.4 ± 2.9 nm in diameter and 40.5 ± 1.3 mV in charge. Confocal microscopy demonstrated PpIX fluorescence within the endo-lysosomal compartment, and an almost twofold increase in cellular uptake compared to free PpIX by flow cytometry. Phototherapy with 3 min and 5 min light illumination resulted in a greater extent of synergism than with co-administered Etop and PpIX; notably, antagonism was observed without light illumination. Mechanistically, significant increases in oxidative stress and apoptosis were observed with Etop/PpIX-PAMAM(G5) Ns upon 5 min of light illumination in comparison to treatment with either of the agents alone. In conclusion, simultaneous delivery and endo-lysosomal co-localization of Etop and PpIX by PAMAM(G5) Ns leads to a synergistic effect by phototherapy; in addition, the finding of antagonism without light illumination can be advantageous in lowering the dark toxicity and improving photo-selectivity.

Chicken coccidiosis is a kind of parasitic protozoosis caused by Eimeria parasitizing in the chicken intestinal epithelial cells. Eimeria tenella is considered as a significantly virulent and harmful parasite. At present, drug resistance remains a major problem and a large number of drug residues have been found to be produced in the treatment of the disease. Hence, novel strategies are needed to avoid the harmful effects caused by the generation of various chemical drug residues to the human body and also reduce the economic loss caused by coccidiosis to the chicken industry. In this study, natural garlic essential oil was used to control Eimeria tenella infection. The anticoccidial index (ACI) was calculated according to the clinical symptoms, body weight gain, oocyst excretion and cecal lesions. The immune organ index and serum biochemical indexes were measured to verify the possible anticoccidial effects. The results showed that: compared with the infected group, continuous feeding of different doses of natural garlic essential oil could significantly reduce the clinical symptoms, cecal lesions, the number of oocysts, but increase the weight of sick chickens, and effectively improve the intestinal functions. Moreover, compared with diclazuril control group, 0.06 mL/L garlic essential oil exhibited similar anticoccidial index. The content of immune organ index, serum biochemical index IgM, IgG and IgA in 0.06 mL/L garlic essential oil group was the highest, which indicated that garlic essential oil had a significant tendency to improve the immune function of the chickens. This study also showed that the natural garlic essential oil exhibited the same beneficial effects as that of diclazuril on chicken coccidiosis, and the anti-coccidiosis index of 0.06 mL/L garlic essential oil was favorable. Thus based on the above evidences and its relatively low cost, garlic essential oil can be potentially be used as an efficient anti parasitic drug.

Solar UVA irradiation-generated reactive oxygen species (ROS) induces the expression of matrix metalloproteinase 1 (MMP-1), leading to photoaging, however the molecular mechanism remains unclear. In the present study, we found that eriodictyol remarkably reduces UVA-mediated ROS generation and protects the skin cells from oxidative damage and the ensuing cell death. Moreover eriodictyol pretreatment significantly down-regulates the UVA-induced MMP-1 expression, and lowers the inflammatory responses within the skin cells. Pretreatment with eriodictyol upregulates the expression of tissue inhibitory metalloproteinase 1 (TIMP-1) and collagen-I (COL-1) at the transcriptional level in a dose-dependent manner. UVA-induced phosphorylation levels of c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK), extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) and p38 leading to increased MMP-1 expression are significantly reduced in eriodictyol-treated skin cells. In addition, eriodictyol pretreatment significantly suppresses inflammatory cytokines and inhibits the activation of MAPK signaling cascades in skin cells. Taken together, our results demonstrate that eriodictyol has both potent anti-inflammatory and anti-photoaging effects.

(1) Background: This study investigated the changes in step frequency, walking ability, and standing posture of students with intellectual disabilities by integrating step training into the students' physical education curriculum; (2) Methods: The centroid formula was used to estimate the geometric center of the students' bodies in video footage of each participant. Each participant's stepping frequency per minute was recorded. After training, the teachers involved were interviewed regarding the participants' everyday activities in school. Each step training session was recorded by two video cameras. Each step training session was observed and photographed by a senior physical education teacher with special education qualifications; (3) Results: The step training increased the stability of the participants' body axes. The participants' average steps per minute of the participants significantly improved from 24.200 ± 7.554 to 28.700 ± 8.629. Additionally, despite the students exhibiting anxious behavior (e.g., squeezing their hands and grasping at their clothes) at baseline, the frequency of these behaviors decreased significantly from week 4. Overall, the students' daily activities, motivation, interpersonal interaction, self-confidence, and anxiety behaviors improved; (4) Conclusions: After the 8-week step program, the participants with intellectual disabilities improved their step frequency, movement stability, ability to perform daily activities, walking speed, motivation, interpersonal interaction, and self-confidence, and they exhibited a lower level of anxiety-related behaviors.

Ammopiptanthus mongolicus is the only evergreen broadleaf shrub in the northwest desert of China, which can survive in long-term aridity and extremely cold environments. In this study, the complete chloroplast genome sequence of A. mongolicus was reported based on the Illumina NovaSeq Platform (Illumina, San Diego, CA). The chloroplast genome is 156,077 bp in length, containing a pair of inverted repeated (IR) regions (14,698 bp) that are separated by a large single copy (LSC) region of 88,025 bp, and a small single copy (SSC) region of 36,606 bp. Moreover, a total of 115 functional genes were annotated, including 81 mRNA, 30 tRNA genes, and 4 rRNA genes. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16 chloroplast genomics indicates that A. mongolicus is closely related to A. nanus.

Phased array technology features rapid and directional scanning and has become a promising approach for remote sensing and wireless communication. In addition, element-level digitization has increased the feasibility of complicated signal processing and simultaneous multi-beamforming processes. However, the high cost and bulky characteristics of beam-steering systems have prevented their extensive application. In this paper, an X-band element-level digital phased array radar utilizing fully integrated complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) transceivers is proposed for achieving a low-cost and compact-size digital beamforming system. An 8-10 GHz transceiver system-on-chip (SoC) fabricated in 65 nm CMOS technology offers baseband filtering, frequency translation, and global clock synchronization through the proposed periodic pulse injection technique. A 16-element subarray module with an SoC integration, antenna-in-package, and tile array configuration achieves digital beamforming, back-end computing, and dc-dc conversion with a size of 317 × 149 × 74.6 mm3. A radar demonstrator with scalable subarray modules simultaneously realizes range sensing and azimuth recognition for pulsed radar configurations. Captured by the suggested software-defined pulsed radar, a complete range-azimuth figure with a 1 km maximum observation range can be displayed within 150 ms under the current implementation.

Post-radiofrequency ablation (RFA) fever is a self-limited complication of RFA. The correlation between post-RFA fever and bacteremia and the risk factors associated with post-RFA fever have not been evaluated. Patients with newly diagnosed or recurrent hepatocellular carcinoma who underwent ultrasonography-guided RFA between April 2014 and February 2019 were retrospectively enrolled. Post-RFA fever was defined as any episode of body temperature >38.0 °C after RFA during hospitalization. A total of 272 patients were enrolled, and there were 452 applications of RFA. The frequency of post-RFA fever was 18.4% (83/452), and 65.1% (54/83) of post-RFA fevers occurred on the first day after ablation. Patients with post-RFA fever had a longer hospital stay than those without (9.06 days vs. 5.50 days, p < 0.001). Only four (4.8%) patients with post-RFA fever had bacteremia. The independent factors associated with post-RFA fever were younger age (adjusted odds ratio (OR) = 0.96, 95% CI, 0.94-0.99, p = 0.019), low serum albumin level (adjusted OR = 0.49, 95% CI, 0.25-0.95, p = 0.036), general anesthesia (adjusted OR = 2.06, 95% CI, 1.15-3.69, p = 0.015), tumor size (adjusted OR = 1.52, 95% CI, 1.04-2.02, p = 0.032), and tumor number (adjusted OR = 1.71, 95% CI, 1.20-2.45, p = 0.003).

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of our study was to investigate whether IL-10 -819C/T, -592A/C polymorphisms were associated with preeclampsia (PE) susceptibility. METHODS: A comprehensive and systematic literature search was performed through online databases, including Web of Science, PubMed, EMBASE, and Chinese databases. Then eligible literatures were included according to inclusion criteria and exclusion criteria. Statistical data analysis was performed using Stata 10.0 software. Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence interval were applied to evaluated the association between IL-10 -819C/T, -592A/C polymorphisms and PE susceptibility. RESULTS: According to inclusion and exclusion criteria, 9 case-control studies, including 1423 cases and 2031 controls, were included in this meta-analysis. Our meta-analysis revealed that no association was found between IL-10 -819C/T, -592A/C polymorphisms and the risk of PE in our study. CONCLUSION: Our meta-analysis suggested that IL-10 -819C/T and -592A/C polymorphisms had no association with PE susceptibility, but had a significant association with PE susceptibility in Asian and Caucasian.

BACKGROUND: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is associated with lower esophageal sphincter (LES) incompetence. In some patients, GERD is refractory to acid reduction therapy which is the main treatment for GERD. So far, medications that can increase LES tone are few. Arecae pericarpium (A. pericarpium) is a medication in Traditional Chinese Medicine known to promote intestinal motility. METHODS: We investigated the effect of A. pericarpium extracts on porcine LES motility. In addition, we used tetrodotoxin (TTX) and atropine to study the underlying mechanism of A. pericarpium extracts-induced contractions of LES. RESULTS: The results of this study showed that A. pericarpium extracts and their main active ingredient, arecoline, can induce the contractions of porcine LES sling and clasp muscles in a dose-response manner. TTX did not have an inhibitory effect on the contractions induced by A. pericarpium extracts and arecoline in LES. However, atropine significantly inhibited A. pericarpium extracts- and arecoline-induced contractions of LES. CONCLUSION: A. pericarpium extracts can induce the contractions of porcine LES in a dose dependent manner, possibly through muscarinic receptors, and hence, may be worth developing as an alternative therapy for GERD.
