RESUMO

Liposarcoma (LPS) is one of the most frequently reported type of soft­tissue sarcoma (STS). Well­differentiated (WD) LPS and dedifferentiated (DD) LPS are the two most common subtypes. Chemotherapy has been considered to be ineffective in LPS, and novel treatment agents are thus necessary. In this study, we reanalyzed two published microarray data sets of LPS. By comparing the top 50 upregulated genes in DD LPS in both sets of data, we identified 12 overlapping genes. Of note, the top five gene sets enriched in DD LPS in both sets of data were involved in cell cycle regulation. Among the 12 overlapping genes, aurora kinase A (AURKA) is a well­known gene involved in cell cycle regulation; we thus further investigated this gene. AURKA was significantly upregulated in DD LPS, compared with WD LPS. Among 40 cases of DD LPS in GSE30929, patients with high AURKA expression in tumors had significantly worse distant recurrence­free survival than those with low expression. In an in vitro model, MLN8237, an AURKA inhibitor, could inhibit AURKA in LPS cell lines with a resultant G2/M arrest. MLN8237 was also reported to exert a cytotoxic effect by inducing apoptosis in LPS cell lines. Furthermore, except for cisplatin, MLN8237 had a significantly synergistic effect with chemotherapy agents against LPS. MLN8237 induced cellular senescence in LPS cell lines with increased expression of DcR2, a senescence biomarker, and upregulated expression of cytokines associated with the senescence­associated secretory phenotype, including interleukin (IL)­1α, IL­6 and IL­8. Our study identified AURKA as a potential biomarker for predicting poor prognosis in LPS. The findings of the present study suggested the potential of AURKA as a therapeutic target in LPS cell line models, while the novel combination of AURKA inhibitors and chemotherapy requires further investigation.

RESUMO

Corrosion damage of aircraft structures can significantly reduce the structural performance and endanger flight safety. There is a pressing need for research on aircraft structural corrosion monitoring technology. Lamb wave tomography (LWT) can be used to evaluate structural corrosion. However, the conventional tomographic method needs sensors with dense array, which is not easy to be satisfied in practice and limits its application. Due to the sparsity of corrosion damage in aircraft structures, compressed sensing (CS), which is an emerging signal processing technique, can be employed to optimize LWT. This paper presents a novel CS-based tomographic method to map out the internal situation of aircraft structure. Compared to conventional LWT, the CS-based tomographic method requires fewer sensors to detect the same corrosion damage while the imaging quality still maintains. The experimental study is carried out to diagnose the real corrosion damage by the new approach. Results show the advantages of the proposed CS-based tomographic method.

BACKGROUND: This study investigated a large number of patients to develop a predictive nomogram for survival and a web-based survival rate calculator that can dynamically predict the long-term survival of patients with primary gastric diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. METHODS: A total of 2647 patients diagnosed with primary gastric diffuse large B-cell lymphoma from 1998 to 2014 were extracted from the SEER database. We used the Lasso Cox regression model to identify independent risk factors for long-term survival and to develop a predictive nomogram for survival and a web-based survival rate calculator. RESULTS: The median (mean) follow-up time was 30 months (52.8 months). Cancer-specific survival rates decreased with time, while the 5-year conditional survival increased with time. Cancer-specific deaths were not constant. Cancer-specific deaths of patients within the first 2 years were high, while the risk remained relatively constant after 2 years. The independent risk factors included surgery, chemotherapy, tumor stage and age, according to the Lasso Cox regression analysis. We developed a predictive nomogram and a web-based survival rate calculator ( https://linjuli1991.shinyapps.io/dynnomapp/ ). The calibration plot suggested that the actual value exhibited good agreement with the predicted value. CONCLUSIONS: We found that patients with primary gastric diffuse large B-cell lymphoma had a high risk of death during the first 2 years. Additional active follow-up strategies should be provided during this period. This is the first study to develop a predictive nomogram and a web-based survival rate calculator that can provide evidence for individual treatment and follow-up.

Objectives: This study aimed to compare the efficacy of laser acupuncture (LA) treatment with that of placebo LA treatment in patients with idiopathic, mild-to-moderate carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), as measured by subjective symptom assessments and objective changes in nerve conduction studies (NCSs). Design: A randomized, single-blinded, controlled study. Settings: A Teaching Hospital in the Taichung, Taiwan between March 2013 and November 2013. Subjects: 84 consecutive treatment-naive patients with CTS. Interventions: Participants were randomly divided into two treatment arms: (1) LA, administered at traditional Chinese acu-points on the affected side, once a day, 5 times a week, for 4 weeks (N = 43); and (2) placebo LA, administered using the same device and protocol, with the LA device switched off (N = 41). Outcome measures: Patients completed the Global symptom score (GSS) at baseline and two and four weeks later. The primary outcome was changes in GSS. NCSs were performed at baseline and repeated at the end of the study as a secondary outcome. Results: There was a significantly greater reduction in GSS in the LA group than in the placebo group at week 2 (-9.30 ± 4.94 vs. -2.29 ± 4.27, respectively, P < 0.01) and at week 4 (-10.67 ± 5.98 vs. -2.90 ± 5.61, respectively, P < 0.01). However, NCSs did not show significant difference between the two groups. Conclusions: LA may be more effective than placebo LA in the treatment of mild-to-moderate idiopathic CTS in terms of subjective measurement. For patients who fear needle-based treatment, such as acupuncture or local injections, or those who do not opt for early surgical decompression, LA treatment can be considered as an effective and alternative form of acu-points stimulation therapy.

PURPOSE: To describe an algorithm for arthroscopic reduction and minimally invasive surgery (ARMIS) and compare the surgical outcomes with standard open reduction-internal fixation (ORIF) for the treatment of supination-external rotation (SER) ankle fractures. METHODS: The inclusion criteria for this study were patients aged 16 years or older, the presence of a unilateral SER fracture, and injuries less than 2 weeks old. We retrospectively identified patients with SER fractures who underwent ORIF from January 2008 to December 2011 or ARMIS from January 2012 to December 2015. Data collected in December 2013 for the ORIF group and in December 2017 for the ARMIS group were compared. The algorithm for ARMIS was minimally invasive plating for lateral malleolar fractures first, followed by ankle arthroscopy for detection of syndesmotic injuries and then arthroscopic reduction of medial malleolar fractures or mini-open repair of the deltoid ligament. The talocrural angle, fibular length, tibiomedial malleolar angle, medial clear space, and tibiofibular clear space were measured radiographically. Functional evaluations included the visual analog scale pain score, American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society ankle-hindfoot scales, and range of motion of bilateral ankles. Complications and reoperations were recorded for comparison. RESULTS: A total of 105 patients with SER fractures, 65 in the ARMIS group and 40 in the ORIF group, were included. Significantly lower incidences of complications (7.7% vs 27.5%, P = .006) and reoperations (1.5% vs 12.5%, P = .029) were found in the ARMIS group than in the ORIF group. More syndesmotic injuries were detected in the ARMIS group than in the ORIS group (80% vs 57.5%, P = .021). The visual analog scale pain score was significantly lower on day 3 postoperatively in the ARMIS group than in the ORIS group (1.96 ± 1.18 vs 2.83 ± 1.07, P = .027). The postoperative stay was shorter in the ARMIS group than in the ORIF group (3.66 ± 1.39 days vs 4.46 ± 2.23 days, P = .024). The operative time was longer in the ARMIS group than in the ORIS group (105.22 ± 27.13 minutes vs 93.59 ± 22.79 minutes, P = .038). A longer fluoroscopic time (0.43 ± 0.25 minutes vs 0.17 ± 0.07 minutes, P < .001) and a higher dose of irradiation (1,216.46 ± 603.99 µGy vs 389.38 ± 217.89 µGy, P < .001) were observed in the ARMIS group. No significant differences in radiographic measurements were found between the operative and nonoperative ankles in both groups. CONCLUSIONS: Our algorithm and the ARMIS techniques may be a safe, reliable, and effective option in the treatment of SER fractures. ARMIS achieves promising surgical outcomes with less early postoperative pain, a shorter postoperative stay, and lower incidences of complications and reoperations compared with ORIF. However, the operative time is longer and the irradiation dose is higher with the ARMIS techniques. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level III, retrospective comparative study.

INTRODUCTION: Starting dialysis early or late both result in a low quality of life and a poor prognosis in patients undergoing haemodialysis. However, there remains no consensus on the optimal timing of dialysis initiation, mainly because of a lack of suitable methods to assess variations in dialysis initiation time. We have established a novel equation named DIFE (Dialysis Initiation based on Fuzzy-mathematics Equation) through a retrospective, multicentre clinical cohort study in China to determine the most suitable timing of dialysis initiation. The predictors of the DIFE include nine biochemical markers and clinical variables that together influence dialysis initiation. To externally validate the clinical accuracy of DIFE, we designed the assessment of DIFE (ADIFE) study as a prospective, open-label, multicentre, randomised controlled trial to assess the clinical outcomes among patients who initiate dialysis in an optimal start dialysis group and a late-start dialysis group, based on DIFE. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: A total of 388 enrolled patients with end-stage renal disease will be randomised 1:1 to the optimal start dialysis group, with a DIFE value between 30 and 35, or the late-start dialysis group, with a DIFE value less than 30, using the Randomization and Trial Supply Management system. Participants will be assessed for changes in signs and symptoms, dialysis mode and parameters, biochemical and inflammatory markers, Subjective Global Assessment, Kidney Disease Quality of Life Short Form, Cognitive Assessment, medical costs, adverse events and concomitant medication at baseline, predialysis visiting stage and postdialysis visiting stage, every 12-24 weeks. The following data will be recorded on standardised online electronic case report forms. The primary endpoint is 3-year all-cause mortality. The secondary endpoints include non-fatal cerebrocardiovascular events, annual hospitalisation rate, quality of life, medical costs and haemodialysis related complications. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: Ethical approval was obtained from the Ethics Committee of the First Affiliated Hospital of Dalian Medical University China (registration no: YJ-KY-2017-119) and the ethics committees of all participating centres. The final results of the ADIFE trial will be presented to the study sponsor, clinical researchers and the patient and public involvement reference group. Findings will be disseminated through peer-reviewed journals, Clinical Practice Guidelines and at scientific meetings. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: ClinicalTrial.gov. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. OBJECTIVES: To compare the surgical results between targeted therapy and post-operative chemotherapy for patients with spinal metastasis of inoperable non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). SETTING: Single-center study at an academic orthopedic department in Taiwan. METHODS: Sixty-five patients were treated surgically for spinal metastasis of inoperable NSCLC with long posterior instrumentation with or without posterior decompression according to the patient's neurologic status. Post-operative radiotherapy of the spinal lesion and targeted therapy or chemotherapy were done following surgery after the surgical wound healed. Post-operative clinical outcomes and survival were evaluated and compared between these two groups. The overall survival represented survival from the date of diagnosis to death. RESULTS: Thirty-five patients were grouped as the targeted therapy group and 30 patients as the chemotherapy group. The overall median survival times were 12.0 and 10.0 months in the targeted therapy and chemotherapy groups, respectively. Sixty-two patients were able to walk with or without an aid postoperatively. There was no significant difference observed between these two groups in terms of pain relief, neurologic improvement, ambulatory improvement, and survival. CONCLUSIONS: Surgical stabilization with or without laminectomy improved functional outcomes in patients with inoperable non-small-cell lung cancer, and post-operative functional outcomes were similar between chemotherapy and targeted therapy groups. A longer survival was observed with targeted therapy for the patients whose NSCLC was diagnosed before spinal metastasis, however, the longer survival was not statistically significant.

This study aimed to compare the accuracy of navigation-assisted percutaneous pedicle screw insertions between traditional posterior superior iliac spine (PSIS) fixed and cutaneously fixed dynamic reference frame (DRF) in minimally invasive surgery of transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (MIS TLIF). This is a prospective randomized clinical study. Between May 2016 and Nov 2017, 100 patients who underwent MIS TLIF were randomly divided into bone fixed group (with PSIS fixed DRF) and skin fixed group (with cutaneously fixed DRF). The pedicel screws were inserted under navigational guidance using computed tomography (CT) data acquired intraoperatively with a Ziehm 3-dimensional fluoroscopy-based navigation system. Screw positions were immediately checked by a final intraoperative scan. The accuracy of screw placement was evaluated by a sophisticated computed tomography protocol. Both groups had similar patient demographics. Totally Five-hundred Twelve pedicle screws were placed in the lumbar spine. There were 2 moderate (2-4 mm) pedicle perforations in each group. The accuracy showed no significant difference between bone fixed and skin fixed DRF. There were no significant procedure-related complications. The skin fixed DRF provides similar accuracy in pedicle screw insertions with bone fixed DRF using intraoperative 3D image guided navigation in MIS TLIF. Skin fixed DRF not only serves as an alternative method but also saves a separate incision wound for bony attachment.

Submesoscale interleaving layers are caused by lateral intrusions of dissimilar water masses in frontal zones, which are significant processes in shaping physical, biogeochemical, and ecological parameters in the ocean. Possible interleaving layers were sometimes observed by ship-based conductivity-temperature-depth (CTD) surveys with coarse spacing between adjacent stations in the Kuroshio region east of Taiwan but have never been examined dynamically. Here we show the characteristics of interleaving layers observed by a Seaglider with two repeated hydrographic surveys along a triangle track east of Taiwan from December 2016 to March 2017. Salinity profiles indicate that prominent interleaving layers appeared in the intermediate layer (approximately 500-800 m) with vertical and horizontal length scales of O(50) m and O(10-100) km, respectively, during our observations. A dipole eddy pair and a relatively large anticyclonic eddy impinged on the Kuroshio during the first and second surveys, respectively, which brought certain impacts on the interleaving motion as the eddy potentially altered the density slope across the Kuroshio. The associated instability analysis and the Turner angle suggest that the double diffusive instability is the primary driving mechanism for the development of interleaving layers.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of three nutritional scoring systems: Prognostic Nutritional Index (PNI), Controlling Nutritional Status (CONUT), and Naples Prognostic Score (NPS) on the short- or long-term prognosis of gastric cancer (GC) patients who underwent radical gastrectomy. METHODS: The clinicopathological data of 2182 patients who underwent radical gastrectomy at the Fujian Medical University Union Hospital (FMUUH) from 2009 to 2014 were retrospectively analyzed. The effects of the PNI, CONUT, and NPS on the short- or long-term prognosis of GC patients were analyzed. RESULTS: Overall, 359 (16.5%) patients had postoperative complications. There was no significant association between the PNI, CONUT, and NPS and postoperative complications (P > 0.05); however, high CONUT and NPS were significantly associated with severe postoperative complications (P < 0.05). Univariate analysis showed that PNI, CONUT, and NPS were all associated with overall survival (OS) (P < 0.001). However, multivariate analysis showed that only PNI was an independent risk factor for OS (P = 0.004), and the 5-year OS rate in the low PNI group was significantly lower than that in the normal PNI group (55.5% vs 75.4%, P < 0.05). The area under the curve (AUC) and the c-index of PNI were significantly higher than those of CONUT and NPS. The prognostic efficiency of combining PNI and TNM stage was also significantly better than that of TNM staging alone (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The current study demonstrated that CONUT and NPS are important for assessing the risk of severe postoperative complications. However, PNI is an independent risk factor for the long-term prognosis of GC patients who underwent radical gastrectomy and can improve the prognostic efficiency of TNM staging.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) NS3 protein possesses protease and helicase activities and is considered an oncoprotein in the viral derived hepatocellular carcinoma. The NS3 associated oncogenesis has been studied but not fully understood. In this study, we have identified novel interactions of the NS3 protein with DNA repair factors, Werner syndrome protein (WRN) and Ku70, both in HCV subgenomic replicon system and in Huh7 cells expressing NS3. HCV NS3 protein inhibits WRN-mediated DNA repair and reduces the repair efficiency of non-homologous end joining. It interferes with Ku70 recruitment to the double strand break sites and alters the nuclear distribution of WRN-Ku repair complex. In addition, WRN is a substrate of the NS3-4A protease, the level of WRN protein is regulated by both proteasome degradation pathway and an HCV NS3-4A protease activity. The dual role of HCV NS3/NS3-4A proteins in regulating the function and expression level of the WRN protein intensifies the effect of impairment on DNA repair. This may lead to an accumulation of DNA mutations and genome instability, and eventually tumor development.IMPORTANCE HCV infection is a worldwide problem of public health, and a major contributor to hepatocellular carcinoma. The single-stranded RNA virus undergoes high error rate of RNA-dependent RNA polymerase and develops strategies to escape immune system and hepatocarcinogenesis. Studies have revealed the involvement of HCV proteins in the impairment of DNA repair. The present study aimed to further elucidate mechanisms by which the viral NS3 protein impairs the repair of DNA damage. Our results clearly indicate that HCV NS3-4A protease targets WRN for degradation, meanwhile, diminishes the repair efficiency of non-homologous end joining by interfering with the recruitment of Ku protein to the DNA double strand break sites. The study describes a novel mechanism by which the NS3 protein influences DNA repair and provides new insight into the molecular mechanism of HCV pathogenesis.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have suggested that preoperative anemia negatively influences survival in patients with gastric cancer (GC). We sought to investigate which anemic markers can better predict the prognosis of patients with resectable GC. METHODS: The study involved 2277 GC patients who underwent curative resection between December 2008 and December 2014. Cox regression models were used to identify the best anemic markers associated with prognosis. Time-dependent receiver operating characteristics analysis (t-ROC) and the estimated area under the curve (AUC) were used to compare the prognostic values. RESULTS: Of all patients, 1709 (75.1%) were male, and the median age was 61 years. Univariate analyses showed that preoperative hematocrit (HCT), hemoglobin, and mean corpuscular volume were associated with OS (all P < 0.05). However, in a separate analysis of individual stages, only HCT was shown to be significantly prognostic across all tumor stages (all P < 0.05). In the multivariate analysis, preoperative HCT remained an independent prognostic factor for GC. Low HCT was significantly associated with older age, female sex, lower body mass index, higher American Society of Anesthesiologists score, higher preoperative transfusion rate, 90-day mortality, adjuvant chemotherapy, larger tumor size, lymph node metastasis, later stage, and vascular involvement. The t-ROC curve and AUC for HCT were similar to those for the controlling nutritional status and prognostic nutritional index throughout the observation period. CONCLUSIONS: The preoperative HCT is a novel, simple, and powerful prognostic indicator of poor outcome in patients with GC and can be used as a part of the preoperative risk stratification process.

Background: Long-standing trigger finger can lead to proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint flexion contracture. In the present study, we present the clinical outcome of percutaneous release with finger splinting for trigger finger with PIP joint flexion contracture prospectively. Methods: We compared outcomes in patients with trigger fingers combined with proximal interphalangeal joint flexion contracture treated by percutaneous release therapy regimen alone (group I) or percutaneous trigger finger release combined with finger splint (group II) during January 2011 and May 2016 with 6 months follow up. Results: Sixty-five patients were randomly allocated to group I (35 patients) or group II (30 patients). Symptoms of locking sensation and pain over the A1 pulley were improved in all patients. The patients in group II showed significantly greater improvements in the flexion contracture angles of proximal interphalangeal joint at post-operative 3 months later (group I, 9.4° ± 4.1°; group II, 27.8° ± 4.6°) and at 6 months later (group I, 15.1° ± 5.2°; group II, 35.7° ± 5.3°) relative to group I. In group II, 25 fingers achieved near full extension (< 10° contracture) after 6 months. Conclusions: Percutaneous release combined with finger splint is regarded as a useful therapy to speed recovery of trigger finger with proximal interphalangeal joint flexion contracture.

We examined the seroprevalence change of anti-hepatitis D virus (HDV) antibodies in Taiwan from 2006 to 2019. A total of 1147 patients who had chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection were assessed. Of them, 51 (4.4%) were positive for anti-HDV antibodies. Comparison between anti-HDV-positive and negative groups was performed to examine clinical and virological factors related to anti-HDV positivity. It was found that the median HBV-DNA concentration was 1.6 × 105 IU/mL (range, <20-4.5 × 1010 IU/mL) and <20 IU/mL (range, <20-2.0 × 109 IU/mL) for patients with negative and positive anti-HDV antibodies, respectively (P < .001). In addition, a progressive year-to-year decrease of anti-HDV seroprevalence was unveiled. For patients who had HBV-DNA >15 000 IU/mL, the year-to-year (calculated every 2 years) seropositive rates of anti-HDV were 10.0%, 7.9%, 0.7%, 0.3%, 0%, 0%, and 0% (P < .001). For patients who had HBV-DNA <15 000 IU/mL, the year-to-year seropositive rates were 18.6%, 12.8%, 7.8%, 5.0%, 7.3%, 8.0%, and 3.7% (P < .001). In conclusion, seropositive of anti-HDV was inversely associated with HBV-DNA levels. A progressive decrease of anti-HDV seroprevalence was found with no anti-HDV-positive cases detected in high HBV-DNA patient group after 2014.

Stromal cell-derived factor-1 (SDF-1) is a well-characterized cytokine that protects heart from ischaemic injury. However, the beneficial effects of native SDF-1, in terms of promoting myocardial repair, are limited by its low concentration in the ischaemic myocardium. Annexin V (AnxA5) can precisely detect dead cells in vivo. As massive cardiomyocytes die after MI, we hypothesize that AnxA5 can be used as an anchor to carry SDF-1 to the ischaemic myocardium. In this study, we constructed a fusion protein consisting of SDF-1 and AnxA5 domains. The receptor competition assay revealed that SDF-1-AnxA5 had high binding affinity to SDF-1 receptor CXCR4. The treatment of SDF-1-AnxA5 could significantly promote phosphorylation of AKT and ERK and induce chemotactic response, angiogenesis and cell survival in vitro. The binding membrane assay and immunofluorescence revealed that AnxA5 domain had the ability to specifically recognize and bind to cells injured by hypoxia. Furthermore, SDF-1-AnxA5 administered via peripheral vein could accumulate at the infarcted myocardium in vivo. The treatment with SDF-1-AnxA5 attenuated cell apoptosis, enhanced angiogenesis, reduced infarcted size and improved cardiac function after mouse myocardial infarction. Our results suggest that the bifunctional SDF-1-AnxA5 can specifically bind to dead cells. The systemic administration of bifunctional SDF-1-AnxA5 effectively provides cardioprotection after myocardial infarction.

Disturbance is the driving force of forest succession, which can change forest structure and surface vegetation. Disturbance also affects rodent-mediated seed dispersal. In this study, numbered plastic tags were used to examine the responses of rodent dispersal behavior to the fates of Quercus aliena var. acuteserrata acorns at three habitats formed by different artificial disturbances in pine-oak mixed forests in the Qinling Mountains, i.e., unlogged stand, stand in the third year after tending thinning, and bare land. The results showed that seed removal rate from stands in the third year after tending was significantly higher than that in the other two habitats. The proportion of predation in bare land was significantly lower than that in the unlogged stand (25.0%) and in the stand in the third year after tending thinning (36.3%). In the third year after tending thinning, the seed predation rate after seed moving was significantly higher than those in the unlogged stand (17.3%) and bare land (5.0%). Moreover, the proportion of scatter hoarding after removal was also highest in the stand in the third year after tending thinning (4.3%). The longest average dispersal distance (26 m) occurred in the stand in the third year after tending thinning, which was significantly longer than those at the other two habitats. Therefore, the different habitat types significantly influenced the initial seed dispersal process by rodents, with consequences on the rates of seedling establishment. Habitat types affected the foraging strategies of rodents, thereby leading to different seed dispersal modes and natural regeneration patterns in the forest.

Amine-functionalized silicon nanoparticles (A-SiNPs) with intense green fluorescence and photostability are synthesized via a one-step, low-cost hydrothermal method under mild conditions using 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane (APTES) as a silicon source and L-ascorbic acid (AA) as a reducing reagent. The amine-rich surface not only improves water dispersability and stability of the A-SiNPs but also offers a specific copper(II) ion (Cu2+) coordination capability. The as-prepared A-SiNPs can be directly employed for Cu2+ detection in "turn-off" mode, resulting from Cu2+ coordination-induced fluorescence quenching effect. Under optimal conditions, Cu2+ detection was accomplished with a linear range from 1 to 500 µM and a limit of detection (LOD) at 0.1 µM, which was much lower than the maximum level (~ 20 µM) of Cu2+ in drinking water permitted by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). In addition, the A-SiNPs were successfully used to detect Cu2+ in spiked river water, demonstrating its good selectivity and potential application for analysis of surface water samples. This paper presents a novel front-illuminated InAlAs/InGaAs separate absorption, grading, field-control and multiplication (SAGFM) avalanche photodiodes (APDs) with a mesa-structure for high speed response. The electric fields in the InAlAs-multiplication layer and InGaAs-absorption layer enable high multiplication gain and high-speed response thanks to the thickness and concentration of the field-control and multiplication layers. A mesa active region of 45 micrometers was defined using a bromine-based isotropic wet etching solution. The side walls of the mesa were subjected to sulfur treatment before being coated with a thick polyimide layer to reduce current leakage, while lowering capacitance and increasing response speeds. The breakdown voltage (VBR) of the proposed SAGFM APDs was approximately 32 V. Under reverse bias of 0.9 VBR at room temperature, the proposed device achieved dark current of 31.4 nA, capacitance of 0.19 pF and multiplication gain of 9.8. The 3-dB frequency response was 8.97 GHz and the gain-bandwidth product was 88 GHz. A rise time of 42.0 ps was derived from eye-diagrams at 0.9 VBR. There was notable absence of intersymbol-interference and the signals remained error-free at data-rates of up to 12.5 Gbps.

A Gram-stain-negative, non-motile, aerobic, short rod-shaped bacterium, designated OD32T, was isolated from a soil sample taken from the rhizosphere of Silene acaulis collected from the Arctic tundra. The novel strain, OD32T, was able to grow at 15-37 °C (optimum, 33 °C), pH 6.5-9.5 (pH 7.5-8.0) and 0-0.5 % NaCl (0 %, w/v). A phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain OD32T was most closely related to the genus Deinococcus; it shared the highest sequence similarity (95.7 %) with Deinococcus grandis ATCC 43672T. Genomic DNA G+C content of the strain OD32T was 68.2 mol%. The predominant respiratory quinone was menaquinone 8 (MK-8). The major fatty acids were summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c/C16 : 1ω6c), C15 : 1ω6c, C17 : 1ω6c, C17 : 0, C16 : 0 and iso-C17 : 0. Based on phylogenetic inference and genotypic characteristics, strain OD32T represents a novel species of the genus Deinococcus, for which the name Deinococcus arcticus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is OD32T (=KCTC 33972T=CICC 24671T).
