BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia (FM) is characterized by chronic widespread pain. Its pathophysiologic mechanisms remain poorly understood, and effective diagnosis and treatments are lacking. This study aimed to identify significantly changed biosignatures in FM and propose a novel classification for FM based on pain and soreness (sng) symptoms. METHODS: Urine and serum samples from 30 FM patients and 25 controls underwent metabolomic and proteomic profiling. RESULTS: As compared with controls, FM patients showed significant differential expression of three metabolites in urine and five metabolites and eight proteins in serum. Of them, DETP, 4-guanidinobutanoic acid, SM(d18:1/18:0), PC(20:1(11Z)/18:0), S100A7, SERPINB3, galectin-7, and LYVE1 were first reported as potential biomarkers for FM. Furthermore, lactate, 2-methylmaleate, and cotinine in urine and lactate, SM(d18:1/25:1), SM(d18:1/26:1), and prostaglandin D2 (PGD2) and PCYOX1, ITIH4, PFN1, LRG1, C8G, C8A, CP, CDH5, and DBH in serum could differentiate pain- (PG) and sng-dominant groups (SG). Lactate, 2-methylmaleate, cotinine, PCYOX1, ITIH4, PFN1, and DBH have higher level in SG. SM(d18:1/25:1), SM(d18:1/26:1), PGD2, LRG1, C8G, C8A, CP, and CDH5 in SG are lower than PG. The omics results indicated disordered free radical scavenging, and lipid and amino acid metabolism networks and resulting NF-κB-dependent cytokine generation in FM. Lactate level was altered simultaneously in urine and serum and significantly higher in sng-dominant patients than others. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, we identified potential biomarkers from FM patients. The selected biomarkers could discriminate sng and pain phenotypes in FM patients. These results could help elucidate the underlying pathological mechanisms for more effective diagnosis and therapy for FM.

BACKGROUND: Thrombocytopenia is a common extrahepatic manifestation in chronic liver disease. However, there have been rare studies of impacts of risk for hepatitis C virus-associated thrombocytopenia (HCV-TP) and hepatitis B virus-associated thrombocytopenia (HBV-TP). The aim of this study is to evaluate different impacts of risk factors for HCV-TP and HBV-TP. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We retrospectively collected 1803 HCV patients and 1652 HBV patients to examine the risk factors for time to moderate and severe thrombocytopenia (platelet counts <100 × 109/L and <50 × 109/L, respectively) by Cox proportional hazards models. Moreover, we prospectively enrolled 63 HCV-TP patients, 11 HBV-TP patients, and 27 HCV controls to detect specific antiplatelet antibodies by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and analyze their effects. RESULTS: Prevalence of platelet <100 × 109/L was 11.86% and 6.35% in HCV and HBV patients without cancer history, respectively. HCV-to-HBV incidence rate ratio for thrombocytopenia was 6.95. Initial thrombocytopenia was the most significant risk factor for HCV-TP and HBV-TP regardless of thrombocytopenia severity. Splenomegaly and cirrhosis were significant risk factors for moderate, but not severe HCV-TP. Hyperbilirubinemia was an important moderate and severe HBV-TP risk factor. Antiplatelet antibodies were correlated with HCV-TP severity, of which anti-glycoprotein IIb/IIIa antibody being associated with smaller spleen size. This antiplatelet autoantibody might contribute thrombocytopenia either independently or with splenomegaly as the important risk in HCV-TP patients without advanced cirrhosis. CONCLUSION: HCV was associated with higher thrombocytopenia incidence than HBV. Thrombocytopenia risk factors varied with virus type and severity. Different management for HCV-TP and HBV-TP was suggested.

Accumulating evidence has shown transcranial low-intensity ultrasound can be potentially a non-invasive neural modulation tool to treat brain diseases. However, the underlying mechanism remains elusive and the majority of studies on animal models applying rather high-intensity ultrasound that cannot be safely used in humans. Here, we showed low-intensity ultrasound was able to activate neurons in the mouse brain and repeated ultrasound stimulation resulted in adult neurogenesis in specific brain regions. In vitro calcium imaging studies showed that a specific ultrasound stimulation mode, which combined with both ultrasound-induced pressure and acoustic streaming mechanotransduction, is required to activate cultured cortical neurons. ASIC1a and cytoskeletal proteins were involved in the low-intensity ultrasound-mediated mechanotransduction and cultured neuron activation, which was inhibited by ASIC1a blockade and cytoskeleton-modified agents. In contrast, the inhibition of mechanical-sensitive channels involved in bilayer-model mechanotransduction like Piezo or TRP proteins did not repress the ultrasound-mediated neuronal activation as efficiently. The ASIC1a-mediated ultrasound effects in mouse brain such as immediate response of ERK phosphorylation and DCX marked neurogenesis were statistically significantly compromised by ASIC1a gene deletion. Collated data suggest that ASIC1a is the molecular determinant involved in the mechano-signaling of low-intensity ultrasound that modulates neural activation in mouse brain.

The purpose of this research is to empirically examine relationships between a multi-dimensional set of corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives, numerous dimensions of customer trust, and corporate image in an emerging economy. It also analyzes the mediating effect of customer trust on the relationship between CSR and corporate image. This study focuses on two of the most well-known hotel chains situated in Pakistan. Close-ended, self-administered questionnaires were circulated amongst a total of 300 hotel customers. The research data was analyzed using a partial least square-structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) model. The results revealed that economic, legal, and ethical CSR significantly impacted corporate image, while philanthropic CSR did not affect the corporate image. However, economic, legal, and philanthropic CSRs were found to be in a significant relationship with customer trust, while ethical CSR was not in a significant relationship with customer trust. Finally, customer trust fully mediated the relationship between economic and legal CSR with corporate image, whereas it partially mediated the relationship between ethical and philanthropic CSR. This study is unique from earlier CSR research based on an assessment of the connection between CSR dimensions and corporate image to examine customers' trust in an emerging economy, especially in times of crisis.

ABSTRACT: Prolotherapy is widely used in pain control and tissue repair in pain medicine. The classical mode is injection with hypertonic dextrose in muscle or perimysium. However, the analgesic mechanism is still not known. Here we successfully established dextrose-mediated antinociception in a mouse model of fibromyalgia. The antinociceptive effects of dextrose injections were evaluated in a mouse model of fibromyalgia, in which bilateral chronic mechanical hyperalgesia was induced by unilateral intramuscular acid injection. The injectant (dextrose), dose (≥ 5%) and volume (>10 µL) but not osmolarity were essential for the prolotherapy. Further studies showed that activation of acid-sensing ion channel 1a (ASIC1a), neural activation, and the release of substance P from muscle afferents were required in the dextrose-induced reduction of mechanical hypersensitivity. Both pharmacological blockade and genetic deletion of ASIC1a or substance P as well as lidocaine abolished the dextrose-induced antinociception in mice with chronic hyperalgesia. Moreover, intramuscular dextrose injection induced phosphorylated extracellular signal-regulated kinase (pERK) expression in dorsal root ganglia neurons expressing substance P; the pERK expression was inhibited by the ASIC1a antagonist PcTx1. The optimal settings for prolotherapy in fibromyalgia-like pain are dextrose- and volume-dependent, and the peripheral antinociception involves ASIC1a and substance P signaling in muscle afferents. This study suggests a possible mechanism of action of dextrose prolotherapy in non-inflammatory muscle pain such as fibromyalgia and provides insights for treating other types of chronic pain.

l-Arginine is an important nutrient in the infant diet that significantly regulates the maturation of the immune system in neonates, including the maturation of CD4+ T cells. The biological activities of CD4+ T cells differ substantially between neonates and adults, and these differences may be governed by epigenetic processes. Investigating these differences and the causative processes may help understand neonatal and developmental immunity. In this study, we compared the functional DNA methylation profiles in CD4+ T cells of neonates and adults, focusing on the role of l-arginine supplementation. Umbilical cord blood and adult CD4+ T cells were cultured with/without l-arginine treatment. By comparing DNA methylation in samples without l-arginine treatment, we found that CD4+ T cells of neonatal cord blood generally showed higher DNA methylation than those of adults (average CpG methylation percentage 0.6305 for neonate and 0.6254 for adult, t-test p-value < 0.0001), suggesting gene silencing in neonates. By examining DNA methylation patterns of CpG dinucleotides induced by l-arginine treatment, we found that more CpG dinucleotides were hypomethylated and more genes appeared to be activated in neonatal T-cells as compared with adult. Genes activated by l-arginine stimulation of cord blood samples were more enriched regarding immune-related pathways. CpG dinucleotides at IL-13 promoter regions were hypomethylated after l-arginine stimulation. Hypomethylated CpG dinucleotides corresponded to higher IL-13 gene expression and cytokine production. Thus, DNA methylation partially accounts for the mechanism underlying differential immune function in neonates. Modulatory effects of l-arginine on DNA methylation are gene-specific. Nutritional intervention is a potential strategy to modulate immune function of neonates.

Although Taipei City has encountered a fall in ambient air pollutant levels since 1996, the year its mass rapid transit (MRT) system commenced operation, no apparent study investigated changes in risks of death attributed to respiratory, cardiovascular, and cerebrovascular diseases in Taipei during this 23-year period. In order to examine the relationship between MRT and occurrence of respiratory and cardiovascular illnesses attributed to air contaminants, exposure over the 23 year duration was subdivided into the following periods: reference period 1 (1992-1995); period 2 (1996-2004), a time when there was a total track length of 67 km; period 3 (2005-2015), when the total track length was lengthened to 131.1 km; and period 4 (2016-2020), when it was further extended to 146.2 km. Taichung City, no MRT system, was used as an external reference population. The effect of Taipei's MRT system on rates of cause-specific death rates was analyzed using robust generalized Poisson regression models. After adjusting for age-standardized rates (ASRs), a decrease in relative risks (RRs) was found for non-trauma death and respiratory disease from periods 2 to 4. Even though the RRs were greater than 1.0 for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases for periods 2 to 4, a downward trend was still noted in these RRs in Taipei. These findings suggest a relationship exists between air pollutant exposure and mortality. In addition, data demonstrated that implementation of the MRT in Taipei exerted beneficial health effects as evidenced by lower mortality rates.

Introduction: Phthalates are substances that are added to plastic products to increase their plasticity. These substances are released easily into the environment and can act as endocrine disruptors. Epidemiological studies in children have showed inconsistent findings regarding the relationship between prenatal or postnatal exposure to phthalates and the risk of allergic disease. Our hypothesis is that prenatal exposure to phthalates may contribute to the development of allergies in children. Material and methods: The objective of this study was to determine the associations between urinary phthalate metabolite concentrations in pregnant women, maternal atopic diathesis, maternal lifestyle, and cord blood IgE. Pregnant mothers and paired newborns (n = 101) were enrolled from an antenatal clinic. The epidemiologic data and the clinical information were collected using standard questionnaires and medical records. The maternal blood and urine samples were collected at 24-28 weeks gestation, and cord blood IgE, IL-12p70, IL-4, and IL-10 levels were determined from the newborns at birth. The link between phthalates and maternal IgE was also assessed. To investigate the effects of phthalates on neonatal immunity, cord blood mononuclear cells (MNCs) were used for cytokine induction in another in vitro experiment. Results: We found that maternal urine monoethyl phthalate (MEP) (a metabolite of di-ethyl phthalate (DEP)) concentrations are positively correlated with the cord blood IgE of the corresponding newborns. The cord blood IL-12p70 levels of mothers with higher maternal urine MEP groups (high DEP exposure) were lower than mothers with low DEP exposure. In vitro experiments demonstrated that DEP could enhance IL-4 production of cord blood MNCs rather than adult MNCs. Conclusion: Prenatal DEP exposure is related to neonatal IgE level and alternation of cytokines relevant to Th1/Th2 polarization. This suggests the existence of a link between prenatal exposure to specific plasticizers and the future development of allergies.

BACKGROUND: Mycoplasma pneumoniae is a pneumonia-causing pathogen commonly found in pediatric patients in Taiwan. Recently, macrolide-resistant (MR) strains have been emerging globally. The prevalence of pneumonia due to MR-M. pneumoniae (hereafter, MPP) in northern Taiwan before 2017 has been reported to be 12.3-24%. The prevalence of MR-MPP within a specific location can vary. Hence, we investigated the prevalence of MR-MPP in southern Taiwan. METHODS: Eighty-one children with PCR-confirmed MPP were enrolled between July 2016 and June 2019. They were assigned to macrolide-sensitive (MS) and MR groups based on their PCR results, and their clinical manifestations and laboratory data were compared. RESULTS: The proportions of patients with MS-MPP and MR-MPP varied with time. The average ratio of the proportion of MR-MPP was 54.3% in this study. Patients with MR-MPP had lower neutrophil counts, higher lymphocyte counts, and higher platelet counts than those with MS-MPP. In contrast with the 40% of the MR-MPP group that still had a fever after three days of azithromycin treatment, only 11.8% of the MS-MPP group still had a fever. CONCLUSION: Our study provided valuable epidemiological survey information for children with MR-MPP in southern Taiwan. The prevalence of MR-MPP was different from that reported in previous studies in northern Taiwan. Specific MR strains should be considered in children with MPP if they still have a fever after three days of macrolide treatment.

The mechanism of pain chronicity is largely unknown in lumbar radiculopathy (LR). The anatomical location of nerve injury is one of the important factors associated with pain chronicity of LR. Accumulating evidence has shown constriction distal to the dorsal root ganglion (DRG) caused more severe radiculopathy than constriction proximal to the DRG; thereby, the mechanism of pain chronicity in LR could be revealed by comparing the differences in pathological changes of DRGs between nerve constriction distal and proximal to the DRG. Here, we used 2 rat models of LR with nerve constriction distal or proximal to the DRG to probe how the different nerve injury sites could differentially affect pain chronicity and the pathological changes of DRG neuron subpopulations. As expected, rats with nerve constriction distal to the DRG showed more persistent pain behaviors than those with nerve constriction proximal to the DRG in 50% paw withdraw threshold, weight-bearing test, and acetone test. One day after the operation, distal and proximal nerve constriction showed differential pathological changes of DRG. The ratios of activating transcription factor3 (ATF3)-positive DRG neurons were significantly higher in rats with nerve constriction distal to DRG than those with nerve constriction proximal to DRG. In subpopulation analysis, the ratios of ATF3-immunoreactivity (IR) in neurofilament heavy chain (NFH)-positive DRG neurons significantly increased in distal nerve constriction compared to proximal nerve constriction; although, both distal and proximal nerve constriction presented increased ratios of ATF3-IR in calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP)-positive DRG neurons. Moreover, the nerve constriction proximal to DRG caused more hypoxia than did that distal to DRG. Together, ATF3 expression in NHF-positive DRG neurons at the acute stage is a potential bio-signature of persistent pain in rat models of LR.

Neuropathic pain is pain caused by damage to the somatosensory nervous system. Both degenerating injured nerves and neighboring sprouting nerves can contribute to neuropathic pain. However, the mesoscale changes in cutaneous nerve fibers over time after the loss of the parent nerve has not been investigated in detail. In this study, we followed the changes in nerve fibers longitudinally in the toe tips of mice that had undergone spared nerve injury (SNI). Nav1.8-tdTomato, Thy1-GFP and MrgD-GFP mice were used to observe the small and large cutaneous nerve fibers. We found that peripheral nerve plexuses degenerated within 3 days of nerve injury, and free nerve endings in the epidermis degenerated within 2 days. The timing of degeneration paralleled the initiation of mechanical hypersensitivity. We also found that some of the Nav1.8-positive nerve plexuses and free nerve endings in the fifth toe survived, and sprouting occurred mostly from 7 to 28 days. The timing of the sprouting of nerve fibers in the fifth toe paralleled the maintenance phase of mechanical hypersensitivity. Our results support the hypotheses that both injured and intact nerve fibers participate in neuropathic pain, and that, specifically, nerve degeneration is related to the initiation of evoked pain and nerve sprouting is related to the maintenance of evoked pain.

BACKGROUND: Complications of percutaneous central venous catheters (PCVCs) include catheter-related blood stream infection (CRBSI), occlusion, leakage, and phlebitis, which may lead to sepsis or prolonged hospitalization. The primary objective of this randomized controlled trial was to determine the appropriate frequency of dressing for percutaneous central venous catheters in preventing CRBSI, every week regularly vs. non-regularly, in premature neonates in NICU. METHODS: Patients in NICU requiring PCVCs from March 2019-May 2020 were enrolled. Enrolled patients were randomly assigned into 2 groups: regular dressing group (RD), for which dressings were changed every week regularly, or additionally when oozing was noticed; and non-regular dressing group (ND), for which dressings were changed only when oozing was visible. The incidence of CRBSI, occlusion, leakage, and phlebitis were compared between the two groups using the Chi-squared test. The incidence of catheter-related complications was defined as numbers of episodes per 1000 catheter-days. RESULTS: A total of 197 PCVCs were enrolled. The ND and RD groups had 99 and 98 PCVCs, respectively. The average CD interval was 9.3 days in ND group and 5.8 days in RD group. The incidence of CRBSI in RD group was 0‰, which was significantly lower than that of ND group, which was 2.0‰ (p = 0.048), but no significant differences were found between groups in the incidence of occlusion, leakage, and phlebitis of PCVCs. CONCLUSION: Regular dressing changes every week and when oozing occurs while maintaining the protocol of maximum sterile barrier precautions is the best method and frequency of dressings of PCVCs.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes during pregnancy is associated with an increased risk of foetal and neonatal complications and long-term complications in the offspring. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a neurotrophin that has a crucial role in neurogenesis modulation and neural pathway maturation during neurodevelopment, may have a role in protecting neurons against injury and diseases by modulating glucose metabolism. The aim of this study was to investigate the possible relationship between the serum BDNF levels of infants of mothers with gestational diabetes (IMGD) and neurodevelopmental outcomes of the children after birth. METHODS: A total of 24 candidates, including 8 IMGD and 16 healthy infants, were recruited for the study. Medical records were reviewed. Serum BDNF levels of the study participants were collected at birth and at 6 and 12 months of age. Developmental outcomes of each candidate were assessed using the Bayley Scales of Infant Development III (BSID III) at 6 and 12 months of corrected age. RESULTS: Compared to non-IMGD, IMGD had greater mean body weight (p = 0.04) and height (p < 0.01) at age 12 months. The language composite score was significantly lower in IMGD at 12 months of age (p = 0.038). The BDNF content was significantly higher in the non-IMGD than in the IMGD group at 12 months of age (p = 0.013). CONCLUSION: In this study, we demonstrated that infants of mothers with gestational diabetes do worse in language development and have lower BDNF levels at 12 months of age. There may be a close correlation between language outcomes and serum BDNF levels at 12 months of age. A follow-up study on future developmental status is warranted.

(1) Background: Post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD) is a hematological disease and occurs because of immunosuppression after organ transplantation. Only a few studies have reported PTLD in the nasopharynx. In most cases, PTLD developed after solid organ transplantation, and cases of PTLD after bone marrow transplantation, are uncommon. (2) Case presentation: We report the case of a 40-year-old woman with myelodysplastic disorder who underwent hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). After 3 months, she developed low-grade fever, progressive nasal obstruction, and bloody rhinorrhea. Endoscopy revealed a mass completely occupying the nasopharynx. A polymorphic PTLD was diagnosed on the basis of histopathological examination results. Reduction in immunosuppression and low-dose radiotherapy were prescribed for treatment. After a 3-year follow-up, no recurrence of PTLD or myelodysplastic disorder was detected. (3) Conclusions: While nasopharyngeal PTLD is rare, a routine examination of the nasopharynx should be considered in the post-transplant follow-up of patients for early detection and treatment of PTLD.

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous central venous catheters (PCVCs) are used commonly and widely in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Malposition of PCVCs may cause life-threatening complications and prolong hospitalization. In Taiwan, conventional chest-abdomen radiography (CXR) has been used widely and routinely for assessing tip location of PCVCs. Compared to ultrasonography (US), CXR cannot provide real-time assessment, and patients are exposed to radiation. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the role of US in detecting PCVC tip location in the lower extremities. METHODS: Neonates who received PCVC insertion in the lower extremities in NICU from March 2019 to April 2020 were enrolled in this prospective cohort study. PCVC tip location was confirmed finally by conventional CXR after US examination and patients were included in the sono group; those not assessed by US formed the non-sono group. In addition, PCVCs inserted in 2018 for which tip location was evaluated only by CXR, were reviewed retrospectively and these cases were included in the non-sono group. Withdrawal rates between the two groups were analyzed using Chi-square test. RESULTS: The sono group included 166 neonates with PCVCs and 141 were in the non-sono group. Median gestational age at date of PCVC insertion was 33.21 and 32.71 weeks in sono and non-sono groups, respectively (p = 0.37). Withdrawal rates were 10.84% and 65.95% (p < 0.001) and duration for catheter location confirmation were 2-4.75 min and 75-247.25 min (p < 0.001), respectively. CONCLUSION: US provides more reliable images than conventional radiography alone for identifying PCVC tip locations in the lower extremities. It can effectively reduce catheter insertion duration, and was associated with fewer manipulations.

BACKGROUND: Oral commissure and buccal complex defects are commonly seen after cancer ablation. Free flap reconstruction can offer adequate soft tissue volume and outer skin lining. However, oral incompetence often occurs when an oral commissure has defects, particularly when the patient receives postoperative radiotherapy. The purpose of this article was to describe our method of the modified stair-step technique and improve the oral competence. METHODS: This study involves 22 patients who had partial lower lip and/or upper lip defects and underwent flap reconstruction and/or postoperative radiotherapy resulting in oral incontinence. Fourteen patients had been treated with an anterolateral thigh flap, 7 patients had been treated with a radial forearm flap, and 1 patient had been treated with a fibular osteocutaneous flap. Our modified stair-step commissuroplasty was done in all cases, and a debulking procedure was done in each second operation. RESULTS: Acceptable oral continence and contour were achieved in 19 patients. Some patients still had drooling after their second operation, but it was considerably less than before. CONCLUSIONS: This technique is an easy procedure for revision of lower lip deformities after oral commissure reconstruction.

Hallmark features of myelofibrosis (MF) are cytopenias, constitutional symptoms and splenomegaly. Anemia and transfusion dependency are among the most important negative prognostic factors and are exacerbated by many JAK inhibitors (JAKi). Momelotinib (MMB) has been investigated in over 820 patients with MF and possesses a pharmacological and clinical profile differentiated from other JAKi by inhibition of JAK1, JAK2 and ACVR1. MMB is designed to address the complex drivers of iron-restricted anemia and chronic inflammation in MF and should improve constitutional symptoms and splenomegaly while maintaining or improving hemoglobin in JAKi-naive and previously JAKi-treated patients. The MOMENTUM Phase III study is designed to confirm and extend observations of safety and clinical activity of MMB.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Ropeginterferon alpha-2b (Ropeg) is a novel pegylated interferon-alpha recently approved for the treatment of polycythemia vera (PV) in Europe. However, other than data from clinical trials, little is known about this agent in real world practice. METHODS: A compassionate use program employing Ropeg for treating patients with unmet medical need was initiated in Taiwan in 2017. Herein, we collected clinical data and assessed the safety as well as efficacy of Ropeg in nine patients treated in this program. RESULTS: Collectively, among evaluable patients, both the molecular response and complete blood count remission rates were 62.5%. Most therapy-related side effects were mild, and there was no treatment discontinuation attributable to intolerable adverse events. The agent also showed efficacy in symptom amelioration and spleen size reduction. Although no specific patterns of cytokine level alteration could be identified, significantly attenuated plasma levels of inflammation markers were observed in one particular patient who happened to have normalized spleen size and most remarkable reduction in JAK2 mutant allele burden, indicating all-around improvement in every aspect of this case. Furthermore, plasma hepcidin levels increased in two-thirds of PV patients, illustrating the potential of Ropeg to restore normal regulation of erythropoiesis. Using RNA sequencing on pre- and post-treatment samples from one patient, we demonstrated altered expression of genes participating in IFN response, inflammation, apoptosis, and cellular differentiation. CONCLUSION: Conclusively, observed signs of efficacy and safety in our real-world experience prove Ropeg as a promising option for the treatment of MPN.

In this study, Eu-doped Li2 (Ba1-x Srx )SiO4 powders (x = 0, 0.2, 0.4, and 0.6) were synthesized at 850°C in a reduction atmosphere (5% H2 + 95% N2 ) for a duration of 1 h using a solid-state reaction method. The reduction atmosphere was infused as the synthesis temperature reached 850°C, and was removed as the temperature dropped to 800-500°C. Li2 (Ba1-x Srx )SiO4 (or Li2 BaSiO4 ), (Ba,Sr)2 SiO4 (or BaSiO4 ), and Li4 SiO4 phases co-existed in the synthesized Eu-doped Li2 (Ba1-x Srx )SiO4 powders. A new finding was that the reduction atmosphere removing (RAR) temperature of the Li2 (Ba1-x Srx )SiO4 phosphors had a large effect on their photoluminescence excitation (PLE) and PL properties. Except for the 800°C-RAR-treated Li2 BaSiO4 phosphor, PLE spectra of all other Li2 (Ba1-x Srx )SiO4 phosphors had one broad emission band with two emission peaks centred at ~242 and ~283 nm; these PL spectra had one broad emission band with one emission peak centred at 502-514 nm. We showed that the 800°C-RAR-treated Li2 BaSiO4 phosphor emitted a red light and all other Li2 (Ba1-x Srx )SiO4 phosphors emitted a green light. Reasons for these results are discussed thoroughly.
