RESUMO

Zein electrospun nanofibers have poor water resistance, which restricts its applications in food preservation. To improve the water resistance of nanofibers, zein/ethyl cellulose (EC) hybrid nanofibers were prepared at different ratios. Besides, we also encapsulated cinnamon essential oil (CEO) into electrospun fibers for Agaricus bisporus preservation. As the weight ratio of EC increased from 0% (ZE-10) to 100% (ZE-01), the viscosity of electrospinning solutions gradually increased from 80.33 ±â€¯19.23 mPa·s to 756.78 ±â€¯22.48 mPa·s, resulting in sufficient chain entanglement for the preparation of uniform fibers. The average diameters of ZE-01, ZE-12, ZE-11, ZE-21, and ZE-10 nanofibers were 326 ±â€¯53 nm, 267 ±â€¯31 nm, 237 ±â€¯51 nm, 292 ±â€¯45 nm, and 362 ±â€¯70 nm, respectively. The hydrogen bonds between the hydroxyl groups of ethyl cellulose and the amino groups of zein decreased the amount of free hydrophilic group, thus improving water resistance of nanofibers. Food packaging potential was evaluated using Agaricus bisporus. The zein/EC nanofibers loaded CEO significantly decreased weight loss and maintained the firmness of the Agaricus bisporus, and improved the quality of the Agaricus bisporus during storage.

A novel nano-silicon oxides (SiOx)/chitosan complex film was prepared using ultrasonic assistant in the process of dissolving chitosan and silicon oxides (SiOx), and characterized by transmission electron microscopy. Its effect on quality preservation of tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum L. cv. Zheza 205) was investigated under ambient temperature. The results revealed that the nano-SiOx/chitosan complex (NSCC) film retarded weight loss and softness, delayed the titratable acids and total soluble solids loss, and thus markedly extended shelf life of green tomatoes. The antimicrobial activity of tomatoes coated with NSCC film was also recorded higher compared to chitosan (Ch) films and control. In addition, the NSCC film-coated tomatoes prevent the increase of malondialdehyde content and total polyphenol content. Moreover, the peroxidase activity, phenylalanine ammonia-lyase activity, and polyphenoloxidase activity of tomatoes coated with NSCC film were found lower than that in other treatments. These data indicated that the beneficial effects of nano-SiOx/chitosan complex coating on postharvest quality were possibly associated with the lower rate of O2/CO2 transmission coefficient, limiting food-borne pathogenic bacterial growth, higher antioxidant activities, and also higher reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging and anti-browning activities of related enzymes in the tomatoes. Further, the results of the study could be used to successfully develop a novel nano-SiOx/chitosan complex film for improving the postharvested quality of tomatoes and thus effectively utilized by the food packaging industry.

To identify independent factors associated with prolonged hospital length of stay (LOS) in elderly patients undergoing first-time elective open posterior lumbar fusion surgery.We retrospectively analyzed the data of 303 elderly patients (age range: 60-86 years) who underwent first-time elective open lumbar posterior fusion surgery at our center from December 2012 to December 2017. Preoperative and perioperative variables were extracted and analyzed for all patients, and multivariate stepwise regression analysis was used to determine the variables affecting the LOS and important predictors of LOS prolongation (P < .001).The mean age of the patients was 67.0 ±â€Š5.5 years, and the mean LOS was 18.5 ±â€Š11.8 days, ranging from 7 to 103 days. Of the total, 166 patients (54.8%) were men and 83 patients (27.4%) had extended LOS. Multiple linear regression analysis determined that age (P < .001), preoperative waiting time ≥7 days (P < .001), pulmonary comorbidities (P = .010), and diabetes (P = .010) were preoperative factors associated with LOS prolongation. Major complications (P = .002), infectious complications (P = .001), multiple surgeries (P < .001), and surgical bleeding (P = .018) were perioperative factors associated with LOS prolongation. Age (P < .001), preoperative waiting time ≥7 days (P < .001), infectious complications (P < .001), and multiple surgeries (P < .001) were important predictors of LOS prolongation.Extended LOS after first-time elective open posterior lumbar fusion surgery in elderly patients is associated with factors including age, preoperative waiting time, infectious complications, and multiple surgeries. Surgeons should recognize and note these relevant factors while taking appropriate precautions to optimize the modifiable factors, thereby reducing the LOS as well as hospitalization costs.

RATIONALE: Schwannomas grow slowly, originating from the Schwann cells of the nerve sheath. Schwannomas of cranial origin have the highest incidence, followed by intraspinal schwannomas. However, paravertebral schwannoma is rare, and to our knowledge, giant paravertebral schwannomas near the lumbar nerve roots with bone destruction are extremely rare. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 47-year-old Chinese woman complained of lower back soreness and a sensation of a bulging lumbar disc with no obvious cause for the past 3 years. DIAGNOSIS: Lumbar magnetic resonance imaging showed a large mass with uneven density, 17 × 12 × 15 cm in size, located to the right of the 4th lumbar with obvious bony destruction. Histopathology and immunohistochemistry confirmed that this mass was a benign schwannoma. INTERVENTIONS: Complete resection of the tumor (measuring about 17 × 12 × 15 cm in size) and vertebral reconstruction using internal fixation were performed. OUTCOMES: The patient was discharged without complications after surgery. The 3-year follow-up revealed that the patient recovered well with no evidence of recurrence. LESSONS: Here, we emphasize the importance of careful radiological examination and reflect on the difficulty of tumor resection. Furthermore, understanding the treatment and diagnosis of lumbar paravertebral schwannoma is critical for plastic surgeons and radiologists when encountering similar cases.

Under the optimal conditions, a crosslinked electrospun polyvinyl alcohol/cinnamon essential oil/ß-cyclodextrin (CPVA-CEO-ß-CD) nanofibrous films for sustained release of antimicrobials were successfully prepared. Cinnamon essential oil (CEO) can be sustainably released due to CPVA-CEO-ß-CD nanofibers complex delivery systems. The chemical crosslinking and physical welding achieved simultaneously by glutaraldehyde atomization fumigation, making fibers more suitable for fresh food packaging. Nanofibrous films were characterized in terms of SEM, ATR-FTIR, DSC, water contact angle analysis and antibacterial trials. ATR-FTIR and DSC data indicated that CEO was encapsulated in a ß-CD cavity and they coexisted in PVA nanofibers. The water contact angle of the crosslinked PVA nanofibrous films increased with CEO and the values were always below 90°. Crosslinked nanofibers possessed fine properties in vitro antibacterial against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Furthermore, CPVA/ß-CD/CEO nanofibrous films delayed decay of mushroom during storage, indicating their potential implementation in active food packaging.

Histone deacetylase (HDAC) performs important functions in plant growth and development, including fruit ripening. As a complex biological process, fruit ripening involves the histone acetylation modification of ripening-associated genes. Histone deacetylase genes (HDACs) have been well studied in Arabidopsis and rice, but the biological functions of HDACs in papaya are poorly understood. In the present work, three CpHDACs, belonging to the RPD3/HDA1 subfamily, were identified from papaya and named as CpHDA1, CpHDA2, and CpHDA3. CpHDA1 and CpHDA2 were induced by propylene, while CpHDA3 was propylene-repressed. Moreover, CpHDA3 protein could physically interact with CpERF9 and enhance the transcriptional repression activities of CpERF9 to downstream genes CpPME1, CpPME2 and CpPG5. Histone acetylation levels of CpPME1 and CpPG5 were increased during fruit ripening. Taken together, these results suggested that CpERF9 recruits CpHDA3 to form a histone deacetylase repressor complex to mediate pectin methylesterase and polygalacturonase genes expression during papaya fruit ripening and softening.

RATIONALE: Giant cell tumor (GCT) is a locally aggressive bone tumor with a high recurrence rate if not completely excised. And reconstructive hip surgery using an artificial prosthesis in a young active patient is controversial because of problems related to the durability of the artificial joint. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 30-year-old man presented with right hip pain and other more severe symptoms, but without fever or night sweats. After 4 months, he experienced intense pain at the root of the right leg and limitation of motion after falling from a bicycle. DIAGNOSES: Giant cell tumor. INTERVENTIONS: The patient was treated with surgical resection of the total tumor, and hemiarthroplasty of the hip joint using a custom-made titanium femoral prosthesis. OUTCOMES: The patient could perform activities of daily living, even walking long distance without pain. He continued to work as a teacher for 30 years and retired 11 years after the surgery. LESSONS: A well-designed, custom-fitted, single-component, wear-resistant joint prosthesis should be the brand-new direction of development of artificial joints.

Pitaya fruit is susceptible to fungal attack and shrivelling during storage. This study investigated the individual and combined effect of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) and carvacrol (CVR) on red pitaya. Fruits were treated with 1 µL L-1 1-MCP, 20 µL L-1 CVR or their combination (1-MCP + CVR), and then storage at 7 °C for 30 days. 1-MCP + CVR was more effective in suppressing decay and maintaining quality during storage than individual treatment of 1-MCP or CVR. In addition, 1-MCP + CVR treatment led to decreased levels of O2-, H2O2, and lipid peroxidation, concomitant with increased activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, and ascorbate peroxidase, and elevated total phenolic content, as compared to the individual application. Moreover, transmission electron microscopy observation showed that the combined treatment protected cell ultrastructure from oxidative damage. This study suggests 1-MCP combined with CVR may be a useful method for the preservation of pitaya fruit.

We investigated the relationship between the pre-drying temperature and overall quality of dried shiitake mushrooms (Lentinula edodes). Results showed that high-temperature pre-drying significantly increased the rehydration ratio and hardness of dried shiitake mushrooms, but decreased the degree of shrinkage, degree of browning, and formaldehyde content. The levels of enzyme activity were high throughout the pre-drying process and benefitted the formation of flavoured substances. Furthermore, high-temperatures pre-drying also resulted in a higher content of sulfur compounds. These results indicated that the pre-drying processing had significant impacts on the overall quality of dried shiitake mushrooms. This may pave the way for increasing the economic value of dried shiitake mushrooms.

Pullulan acetate (PLAc), pullulan propionate (PLPr) and pullulan butylate (PLBu) with various degrees of substitution (DS) were synthesized from pullulan and different carboxylic anhydrides (acetic anhydride, propionic anhydride and butyric anhydride). The structure of PLAc, PLPr and PLBu were determined by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer (FT-IR) and 1H Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (1H-NMR) spectroscopy. Pullulan ester films were obtained by solvent casting. The water vapor permeability, oxygen permeability, surface hydrophobicity, color and mechanical properties were investigated. Compared with native pullulan, all pullulan esters film showed a lower TS. TS and EAB declined with the increase of DS. PLBu3 achieved the lowest water vapor permeability property at 0.792 × 10-11 g/m s Pa and lowest oxygen permeability property of 0.625 × 10-3 g/m2 s. The onset of ripening was monitored in terms of reduction in flesh firmness loss and weight loss. Package fruits with pullulan ester films delayed the ripening and senescence and hence could be used as an effective edible coating for extending their shelf life.

Porous adsorption, a less powerful adsorptive force than chemical bonds, is based on the physical adsorption of small molecules onto a solid surface that is capable of adsorbing gas or liquid molecules. Antimicrobial permutite composite (containing Ag⁺, Zn2+ and Ag⁺/Zn2+), starting from Linde Type A-permutite (LTA), was obtained in this research. The permutite samples were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), colorimeter and nitrogen adsorption technique. Cinnamon essential oil (CEO) was encapsulated into Ag⁺/Zn2+-permutite. The FT-IR and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) confirmed that no chemical bond existed between CEO and Ag⁺/Zn2+-permutite. The loading capacity of Ag⁺/Zn2+-permutite/CEO was 313.07 µL/g, and it had a sustained release effect. The Ag⁺/Zn2+-permutite/CEO showed stronger efficacy against Aspergillusniger and Penicillium sp. than Ag⁺/Zn2+-permutite. Ethyl cellulose pads modified by composite antimicrobial particles were applied in the preservation of Chinese bayberry. Compared to the control group, treatment with the Ag⁺/Zn2+-permutite/CEO antimicrobial pads resulted in a significantly lower decay incidence. In addition, the amount of migrated silver, zinc and aluminum from LTA was below the legal limit. These results confirmed that the ethyl cellulose pads modified by the Ag⁺/Zn2+-permutite/CEO provided an active packaging to control decay of fresh Chinese bayberry.

Cuticular wax plays an important role for the quality of blueberry fruits. In this study, the cuticular wax composition of two blueberry cultivars, 'Legacy' ( Vaccinium corymbosum) and 'Brightwell' ( Vaccinium ashei), was examined during fruit ripening and postharvest cold storage. The results showed that wax was gradually deposited on the epidermis of blueberry fruits and the content of major wax compounds, except that for diketones, increased significantly during fruit ripening. The total wax content was 2-fold greater in 'Brightwell' blueberries than that in 'Legacy' blueberries during fruit ripening. The total wax content of both cultivars decreased during 30 days of storage at 4 °C, and the variation of cuticular wax composition was cultivar-dependent. The content of diketones decreased significantly in 'Legacy' blueberries, while the content of triterpenoids and aliphatic compounds showed different fold changes in 'Brightwell' blueberries after 30 days of storage at 4 °C. Overall, our study provided a quantitative and qualitative overview of cuticular wax compounds of blueberry fruits during ripening and postharvest cold storage.

Edible packaging films using polymer for food preservation have been developed for a long time. In this study, the effects of different concentrations (0.5%, 1%, 1.5%, w/v) of tea polyphenols incorporated into pullulan-Carboxymethylcellulose sodium (Pul-CMC) solutions on electrospun nanofiber films were evaluated. The fiber size distribution was characterized by scanning electron microscopy. The morphological features of nanofibers were modulated through adjusting process parameters (e.g. concentration of polymer solution, applied voltage and feeding rate). Increasing the applied voltage from 19 to 21kV and the feed rate from 0.36 to 0.6mL/h leads to a reduction in mean fiber diameter. Fruit packaging potential was evaluated using strawberry. The pullulan-CMC-TP nanofibers significantly decreased weight loss and maintained the firmness of the strawberries, and improved the quality of the fruit during storage. The findings demonstrate a facile packaging route to improve food sustainability and reduce waste.

The blueberry fruit has a light-blue appearance because its blue-black skin is covered with a waxy bloom. This layer is easily damaged or removed during fruit harvesting and postharvest handling. We investigated the effects of wax removal on the postharvest quality of blueberry fruit and their possible mechanisms. The removal of natural wax on the fruit was found to accelerate the postharvest water loss and decay, reduce the sensory and nutritional qualities, and shorten the shelf-life. Wax removal decreased the activities of antioxidant enzymes and contents of antioxidants, and accelerated accumulation of ROS and lipid peroxidation, especially at the later period of storage. Moreover, the organellar membrane structure was disrupted in fruit with wax removed. These results indicate that cuticular wax plays an important role in maintaining the postharvest quality and delaying fruit senescence. The results should improve our understanding for better preservation of postharvest quality of blueberry fruit.

The aim of this research was to investigate the effect of metallic ions (Na+, Ca2+, K+ and Mg2+) on the physicochemical stability of curcumin emulsions stabilized by Ulva fasciata polysaccharide (UFP). Mean droplet diameter, PdI, zeta-potential, microscopic morphology, and rheological properties of curcumin emulsion stabilized by UFP were investigated. The results showed that different metal ions had significantly different effects on the stability of emulsion. When the effect of Mg2+ was compared with others, it was found that Mg2+ had a pronounced effect on emulsion stability. As for z-average size and PdI, they changed significantly for metallic ions with higher valence. According to the rheology test, Ca2+ could mediate the gelation of UFP emulsions. Besides, with an increase of ionic concentration, the retention rate of curcumin was reduced. In comparison with gum Arabic, the UFP revealed better stability under different metallic ions and ionic concentration at same concentration.

BACKGROUND: Reducing spoilage and prolonging the shelf-life of food materials are both critically important in the food industry. Among the many available preservatives, ethanol has been widely used for the storage of fruits and vegetables. Although a few ethanol emitters are available in the form of antimicrobial packaging, these ethanol emitters demonstrate high volatility, uncontrolled release and other disadvantages, and so the practical applications are limited. RESULTS: A novel ethanol gel with a controlled release rate was prepared by a gelatification reaction between ethanol and sodium stearate to overcome the disadvantage of conventional ethanol emitters. The hardness, adhesiveness and cohesiveness of developed ethanol gels increased, whereas the springiness decreased along with an increase in the sodium stearate concentration. The release rate of ethanol in the gels was controlled by the concentration of sodium stearate, in which a first-order release kinetic was observed. The release rate constant (k) of the gels with 12.5, 37.5, 62.5 g kg-1 of sodium stearate was 0.58 ± 0.029, 0.49 ± 0.035 and 0.41 ± 0.021 h-1 , respectively, at 25 °C. The application of the controlled release ethanol emitter with respect to the storage of Chinese bayberry fruit demonstrated its ability to reduce the decay rate, maintain firmness and inhibit increased malondialdehyde content at 4 °C. CONCLUSION: In terms of practical applications, an appropriate sodium stearate content can be selected in accordance with the storage period, aiming to achieve precise storage goals. Therefore, the ethanol emitter has potential application prospects as an active packaging for Chinese bayberry fruit, as well as for other perishable products. © 2017 Society of Chemical Industry.

Fresh coriander leaves are highly perishable in nature and their sensory quality and nutritional value decreases without proper processing or preservation. In the present study, three aqueous solutions of sodium hypochlorite (SH, 100 mg/L), chlorine dioxide (CD, 10 mg/L), and sodium butyl p-hydroxybenzoate (SBPH, 12 mg/L), and tap water, were used to treat fresh coriander for 15 min. The treated samples were packed in PVC boxes with ambient air under packaged under passive modified atmosphere packaging conditions and stored at 4 °C for 10 days. Effects of washing treatments on color, total chlorophyll contents, ascorbic acid contents, total contents of phenolic compounds, and total aerobic bacterial counts (APC) were investigated. CD treatment has the least detrimental effects on color, total chlorophyll contents and ascorbic acid contents of fresh coriander, followed by SH treatment. In addition, CD treatment showed a greater reduction in APC and maintained the microbial load at lower levels than other treatments during the 10-day storage period.

The chemical composition and morphology of cuticular wax in mature fruit of nine blueberry cultivars were investigated using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Triterpenoids and ß-diketones were the most prominent compounds, accounting for on average 64.2% and 16.4% of the total wax, respectively. Ursolic or oleanolic acid was identified as the most abundant triterpenoids differing in cultivars. Two ß-diketones, hentriacontan-10,12-dione and tritriacontan-12,14-dione, were detected in cuticular wax of blueberry fruits for the first time. Notably, hentriacontan-10,12-dione and tritriacontan-12,14-dione were only detected in highbush (V. corymbosum) and rabbiteye (V. ashei) blueberries, respectively. The results of SEM showed that a large amount of tubular wax deposited on the surface of blueberry fruits. There was no apparent difference in wax morphology among the nine cultivars.

Mulberry (Morus spp.) fruits are delicious and nutritious, but they are highly perishable and have a very short shelf-life for sale in the market. This study investigated the effect and mechanisms of 2ppm ozone and precooling treatments on the postharvest quality of mulberry fruit during refrigerated storage. The results revealed that mulberry fruit subjected to ozone and precooling treatment had higher levels of titratable acidity and total soluble solids content, better retention in firmness and color, and lower decay rate, respiratory intensity, and polyphenol oxidase activity compared to the control. From the analysis of cell ultrastructure and cell wall components of fruit, ozone and precooling treatments also induced shrinkage of the stomata in the epidermis, inhibited bacteria invasion, reduced water transpiration, and delayed the decomposition of the cell walls and the degradation of epidermal tissues.
