RESUMO

Aurora kinases B (AURKB), which plays a critical role in chromosomal segmentation and mitosis, greatly promotes cell cycle progression and aggressive proliferation of cancers. So far, its role and underlying mechanisms in mediating poor outcome of lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) remained largely unclear. Analyses on multiple omics data of lung adenocarcinoma cohort in The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) were performed based on AURKB expression, and demonstrated its association with clinical characteristics and the potential of using AURKB as a biomarker in predicting patients' survival. This study found aberrant alterations of genomics and epigenetics, including up-regulation and down-regulation of oncogenic genes and tumor suppressors, pathways involved in the cell cycle, DNA repair, spliceosome, and proteasome, hypermethylation enrichments around transcriptional start sites, which are all related to AURKB expression. We further discovered the possible role of tumor suppressors DLC1 and HLF in AURKB-mediated adverse outcome of LUAD. To conclude, this study proved AURKB as a potential prognostic factor and therapeutic target for lung adenocarcinoma treatment and provide a future research direction.

OBJECTIVE: Suberoylanilide hydroxamic acid (SAHA), a histone deacetylase inhibitor, has shown potential as a candidate radiosensitizer for many types of cancers. This study aimed to explore the radiosensitization mechanism of SAHA in lung cancer cells. METHODS: Mutations in p53 were generated by site-directed mutagenesis using polymerase chain reaction. Transfection was performed to generate H1299 cells carrying wild-type or mutant p53. The radiosensitizing enhancement ratio was determined by clonogenic assays. Mitochondrial apoptosis was detected using JC-1 staining and flow cytometry analysis. RESULTS: Our results showed that SAHA induced radiosensitization in H1299 cells expressing wild-type p53, p53R175H or p53P223L, but this enhanced clonogenic cell death was not observed in parental H1299 (p53-null) cells or H1299 cells expressing p53 with K120R, A161T and V274R mutations. In SAHA-sensitized cells, mitochondrial apoptosis was induced following exposure to irradiation. Additionally, we observed that a secondary mutation at K120 (K120R) could eliminate p53-mediated radiosensitization and mitochondrial apoptosis. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study suggest that wild-type and specific mutant forms of p53 mediate SAHA-induced radiosensitization by regulating mitochondrial apoptosis, and the stabilization of K120 acetylation by SAHA is the molecular basis contributing to radiosensitization in lung cancer cells.

BACKGROUND: Pneumonia caused by the 2019 novel Coronavirus (COVID-2019) shares overlapping signs and symptoms, laboratory findings, imaging features with influenza A pneumonia. We aimed to identify their clinical characteristics to help early diagnosis. METHODS: We retrospectively retrieved data for laboratory-confirmed patients admitted with COVID-19-induced or influenza A-induced pneumonia from electronic medical records in Ningbo First Hospital, China. We recorded patients' epidemiological and clinical features, as well as radiologic and laboratory findings. RESULTS: The median age of influenza A cohort was higher and it exhibited higher temperature and higher proportion of pleural effusion. COVID-19 cohort exhibited higher proportions of fatigue, diarrhea and ground-glass opacity and higher levels of lymphocyte percentage, absolute lymphocyte count, red-cell count, hemoglobin and albumin and presented lower levels of monocytes, c-reactive protein, aspartate aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, serum creatinine. Multivariate logistic regression analyses showed that fatigue, ground-glass opacity, and higher level of albumin were independent risk factors for COVID-19 pneumonia, while older age, higher temperature, and higher level of monocyte count were independent risk factors for influenza A pneumonia. CONCLUSIONS: In terms of COVID-19 pneumonia and influenza A pneumonia, fatigue, ground-glass opacity, and higher level of albumin tend to be helpful for diagnosis of COVID-19 pneumonia, while older age, higher temperature, and higher level of monocyte count tend to be helpful for the diagnosis of influenza A pneumonia.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is defined as an immune dysregulation disease with poor prognosis. Various therapies based on gut microbe modulation have been proposed. In this study, we aim to explore the therapeutic effect of B. adolescentis on IBD, as well as the immune and microecology mechanism of B. adolescentis in IBD. The fecal level of B. adolescentis was decreased in the IBD patients compared with the normal people in our cohort and the GMrepo database. To further clarify the role of B. adolescentis in IBD, we induced chronic colitis with three cycles of dextran sulfate sodium (DSS). We found B. adolescentis gavage exhibited protective effects as evidenced by the significantly decreased diarrhea score, spleen weight, and increased colon length. Accordingly, the cumulative histological grading was decreased in the B. adolescentis administration group. In addition, tight junction protein and mucin family were enhanced after B. adolescentis treatment. Furthermore, distinct effects were found with decreased pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1ß, IL-18, IL-22, IL-9 and increased anti-inflammatory cytokines IL-10, IL-4, IL-5. Importantly, the colon lamina propria in the B. adolescentis group consisted of more Treg and Th2 cells, which inhibited extreme gut inflammation. Additionally, 16srRNA sequencing showed an evident increase in the B:F ratio in the B. adolescentis group. In particular, B. adolescentis application inhibited the excessive growth of Akkermansia and Escherichia-Shigella in genus level. In conclusion, B. adolescentis refined the DSS-induced chronic colitis by stimulating protective Treg/Th2 response and gut microbiota remodeling. B. adolescentis regularly treatment might improve the therapeutic effects for inflammatory bowel disease.

INTRODUCTION: We aimed to compare the early clinical manifestations, laboratory results and chest computed tomography (CT) images of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients with those of other community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) patients to differentiate COVID-19 before reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction results are obtained. METHODS: The clinical and laboratory data and chest CT images of 51 patients were assessed in a fever observation ward for evidence of COVID-19 between January and February 2020. RESULTS: 24 patients had laboratory-confirmed COVID-19, whereas 27 individuals had negative results. No statistical difference in clinical features was found between COVID-19 and CAP patients except for diarrhoea. There was a significant difference in lymphocyte and eosinophil counts between COVID-19 and CAP patients. 22 (91.67%) COVID-19 patients had bilateral involvement and multiple lesions according to their lung CT images; the left lower lobe (87.50%) and right lower lobe (95.83%) were most often affected, and all lesions were located in peripheral zones of the lung. The most common CT feature of COVID-19 was ground-glass opacity, found in 95.83% of patients, compared to 66.67% of CAP patients. CONCLUSION: Diarrhoea, lymphocyte counts, eosinophil counts and CT findings (e.g. ground-glass opacity) could help to distinguish COVID-19 from CAP at an early stage of infection, based on findings from our fever observation ward.

BACKGROUND: Kidney cancer (KC) is associated with cardiovascular regulation disorder and easily leads to cardiovascular and cerebrovascular death (CCD), which is one of the major causes of death in patients with KC, especially those with T1/2 status. However, few studies have treated CCD as an independent outcome for analysis. We aimed to identify and evaluate the key factors associated with CCD in patients with T1/2 KC by competing risk analysis and compared these risk factors with those associated with kidney cancer-specific death (KCD) to offer some information for clinical management. METHODS: A total of 45,117 patients diagnosed with first primary KC in T1/2 status were obtained from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. All patients were divided into the CCD group (n = 3087), KCD group (n = 3212), other events group (n = 6312) or alive group (n = 32,506). Patients' characteristics were estimated for their association with CCD or KCD by a competing risk model. Pearson's correlation coefficient and variance inflation factor (VIF) were used to detect collinearity between variables. Factors significantly correlated with CCD or KCD were used to create forest plots to compare their differences. RESULTS: The competing risk analysis showed that age at diagnosis, race, AJCC T/N status, radiation therapy, chemotherapy and scope of lymph node represented different relationships to CCD than to KCD. In detail, age at diagnosis (over 74/1-50: HR = 9.525, 95% CI: 8.049-11.273), race (white/black: HR = 1.475, 95% CI: 1.334-1.632), AJCC T status (T2/T1: HR = 0.847, 95% CI: 0.758-0.946) and chemotherapy (received/unreceived: HR = 0.574, 95% CI: 0.347-0.949) were correlated significantly with CCD; age at diagnosis (over 74/1-50: HR = 3.205, 95% CI: 2.814-3.650), AJCC T/N status (T2/T1: HR = 2.259, 95% CI: 2.081-2.451 and N1/N0:HR = 3.347, 95% CI: 2.698-4.152), radiation therapy (received/unreceived: HR = 2.552, 95% CI: 1.946-3.346), chemotherapy (received/unreceived: HR = 2.896, 95% CI: 2.342-3.581) and scope of lymph nodes (1-3 regional lymph nodes removed/none: HR = 1.378, 95% CI: 1.206-1.575) were correlated significantly with KCD. CONCLUSIONS: We found that age at diagnosis, race, AJCC T status and chemotherapy as the independent risk factors associated with CCD were different from those associated with KCD.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the chest CT imaging features and clinical outcome of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Ningbo, China. METHODS: In this retrospective study, twenty-eight confirmed and seven highly suspected cases of COVID-19 were enrolled in Ningbo first hospital from January 26, 2020 to March 5, 2020. Cases were confirmed by real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). The initial and follow-up chest CT imaging features, epidemiological history, and outcome were analyzed. RESULTS: The average age of the patients was 57.3 ± 15.3 years (range: 27-96 years), including 25 females and 10 males. On CT images, 89.3% (25/28) confirmed and 100% (7/7) suspected patients had ground-glass opacities (GGOs), and GGOs with mixed consolidations were observed in 35.7% (10/28) confirmed and 42.9% (3/7) suspected cases, most of these lesions were distributed under the peripheral of both lungs. 17 confirmed and 4 suspected cases had a history of participating in Ningbo Tian-tong Temple rituals and all had GGOs in their lungs during the initial CT scan. As of March 25, 2020, the lung lesions of our cases were significantly resolved and all patients have been discharged from the hospital. CONCLUSION: The most common chest CT features are multiple bilateral and peripheral GGOs with mixed consolidations or not in the lungs of patients with COVID-19. Chest CT plays an important role in the diagnosis and monitoring treatment response of this disease. There was no reported death in our cases.

Sanguinarine, a benzyl isoquinoline alkaloid extracted from the root of Papaveraceae plants, shows extensive pharmacological activities including anti-microbial, anti-trypanosoma, anti-tumor, anti-platelet, anti-hypertensive effects, as well as inhibition of osteoclast formation. Here we demonstrate that TRPA1 channel (Transient receptor potential cation channel, member A1) is a potential target for sanguinarine. Electrophysiological recordings show that sanguinarine activates TRPA1 channel potently with an EC50 0.09 (0.04-0.13) µM, but has no effects on other examined TRP channels. Sanguinarine increases the intracellular calcium levels and upregulates the excitability of mouse dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons in vitro significantly. Plantar injection of sanguinarine evokes nociceptive behaviors similar to that elicited by allyl isothiocyanate (AITC), a classic agonist of TRPA1. Both the enhancement of excitability of DRG neurons and the nociceptive behaviors can be attenuated by treatment of TRPA1 channel antagonist HC030031 or knockout of trpa1 gene. Taken together, our data demonstrate that sanguinarine is a potent and relatively selective agonist of TRPA1 channel.

Ovarian cancer is one of the common female malignant tumors. The early diagnosis and treatment of ovarian cancer has been a research hotspot. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the correlations between the levels of carbohydrate antigen 125 (CA125), human epididymis protein 4 (HE4), D-dimer (DDI), and fibrinogen degradation product (FDP) in patients with type II epithelial ovarian cancer.From January 2018 to January 2019, a total of 952 patients who underwent initial surgery for epithelial ovarian cancer were enrolled in this study. Peripheral venous blood was taken before operation, and the levels of CA125, HE4, DDI, and FDP were tested. The correlations between the levels of CA125, HE4, DDI, and FDP and other clinical indicators (such as presence or absence of chemotherapy, surgical conditions) were analyzed.The level of DDI or FDP was statistically associated with age, chemotherapy, Figo staging, surgical procedure, HE4 level, and CA125 level, respectively. Moreover, the Figo staging was statistically correlated with the levels of HE4 and CA125. Besides, we found the levels of CA125 and HE4 were positively correlated with the levels of DDI and FDP.The levels of CA125 and HE4 are the traditional detection indexes for patients with type II epithelial ovarian cancer, and these 2 indicators reflected the degree of disease and prognosis. The levels of DDI and FDP were closely related to the levels of CA125 and HE4 in type II epithelial ovarian cancer, and they also helped to assess the prognosis of epithelial ovarian cancer. Further larger-scale prospective cohort studies are warranted to determine these associations in the future.

Liver dysfunction is an outstanding dose-limiting toxicity of gefitinib, an EGFR (epidermal growth factor receptor)-tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI), in the treatment of EGFR mutation-positive non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). We aimed to elucidate the mechanisms underlying gefitinib-induced hepatotoxicity, and provide potentially effective intervention strategy. We discovered that gefitinib could sequentially activate macroautophagy/autophagy and apoptosis in hepatocytes. The inhibition of autophagy alleviated gefitinib-induced apoptosis, whereas the suppression of apoptosis failed to lessen gefitinib-induced autophagy. Moreover, liver-specific Atg7 +/- heterozygous mice showed less severe liver injury than vehicle, suggesting that autophagy is involved in the gefitinib-promoted hepatotoxicity. Mechanistically, gefitinib selectively degrades the important anti-apoptosis factor COX6A1 (cytochrome c oxidase subunit 6A1) in the autophagy-lysosome pathway. The gefitinib-induced COX6A1 reduction impairs mitochondrial respiratory chain complex IV (RCC IV) function, which in turn activates apoptosis, hence causing liver injury. Notably, this autophagy-promoted apoptosis is dependent on PLK1 (polo like kinase 1). Both AAV8-mediated Plk1 knockdown and PLK1 inhibitor BI-2536 could mitigate the gefitinib-induced hepatotoxicity in vivo by abrogating the autophagic degradation of the COX6A1 protein. In addition, PLK1 inhibition could not compromise the anti-cancer activity of gefitinib. In conclusion, our findings reveal the gefitinib-hepatotoxicity pathway, wherein autophagy promotes apoptosis through COX6A1 degradation, and highlight pharmacological inhibition of PLK1 as an attractive therapeutic approach toward improving the safety of gefitinib-based cancer therapy. Liposarcoma is the most common soft tissue malignancy and usually occurs in the retroperitoneum or the extremities but rarely in the kidney. In this article, we report a case of a 71-year-old female patient who presented with abdominal lump and left flank pain for 1 month. An abdominal contrast-enhanced computed tomography scan demonstrated a 12 cm × 7 cm solid mass arising from the upper pole of left kidney and another 8 cm × 6 cm low-density retroperitoneal mass with fat density. Radical nephrectomy of the left kidney and resection of the retroperitoneal mass were performed. Surprisingly, pathological examination revealed a high-grade sarcoma (with minor lipomatous component) in the left kidney and a retroperitoneal well-differentiated liposarcoma. MDM2 gene amplification was identified by fluorescence in situ hybridization in both tumors, supporting final diagnosis of dedifferentiated liposarcoma of the kidney and well-differentiated liposarcoma of the retroperitoneum.

Sex determining region Y-box 2 (SOX2) is a transcription factor that serves a role in numerous different types of malignant cancer. Altered expression of chloride channel proteins has been described in a variety of malignancies. However, the association between SOX2 and chloride channel proteins is not yet fully understood. The present study investigated the association between SOX2 and chloride voltage-gated channel 3 (CLC-3) in prostate cancer. Flow cytometry demonstrated that the inactivation of CLC-3 or SOX2 arrested cell cycle progression in the G0/G1 phase. Furthermore, CLC-3 was observed to bind to SOX2, and vice versa, by co-immunoprecipitation. SOX2 appears to initiate and maintain prostate cancer tumorigenesis, in part, by modulating the cell cycle. These findings indicate the potential of SOX2 and CLC-3 as targets for the development of multi-targeted therapeutics.

In this paper, the event-triggered integrated attitude and orbit control problem is studied for the distributed spacecraft formation system. First, the operation rules of dual numbers and dual quaternion are presented, and the attitude-orbit coupling error dynamics models for single spacecraft and spacecraft formation are established based on the dual quaternion. An event-triggered attitude-orbit coupled sliding mode tracking control law is proposed to stabilize the attitude-orbit control system, which can reduce the communication burden among spacecraft at the same time. Under the developed control scheme, the state trajectory of attitude-orbit control systems can arrive on the designed sliding surface in finite time, and the asymptotic stability of the overall formation control system can be ensured. Considering the fact that the inertia and mass parameters in practice may not be measured exactly, an adaptive sliding mode control law is further proposed. Finally, a simulation example is given to verify the validity and feasibility of the proposed spacecraft event-triggered control method.

INTRODUCTION: The study aimed to establish and internally validate a nomogram to predict successful smoking cessation in a Chinese outpatient population. METHODS: A total of 278 participants were included, and data were collected from March 2016 to December 2018. Predictors for successful smoking cessation were evaluated by 3-month sustained abstinence rates. Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression was used to select variables for the model to predict successful smoking cessation, and multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed to establish a novel predictive model. The discriminatory ability, calibration, and clinical usefulness of the nomogram were determined by the concordance index (C-index), calibration plot, and decision curve analysis, respectively. Internal validation with bootstrapping was performed. RESULTS: The nomogram included living with a smoker or experiencing workplace smoking, number of outpatient department visits, reason for quitting tobacco, and varenicline use. The nomogram demonstrated valuable predictive performance, with a C-index of 0.816 and good calibration. A high C-index of 0.804 was reached with interval validation. Decision curve analysis revealed that the nomogram for predicting successful smoking cessation was clinically significant when intervention was conducted at a successful cessation of smoking possibility threshold of 19%. CONCLUSIONS: This novel nomogram for successful smoking cessation can be conveniently used to predict successful cessation of smoking in outpatients.

MAIN CONCLUSION: Transcriptome and physiological analysis showed that exogenous arginine can delay the ripening process of postharvest strawberry fruit. Arginine (Arg) plays an important role in the growth and development of plants, but its growth and development regulatory mechanisms in strawberry fruit are unknown. In this study, we found that the content of Arg decreased after the onset of fruit coloration and exogenous Arg inhibited fruit coloration. We comprehensively analyzed the transcriptome of 'Sweet Charlie' strawberry fruit with or without Arg treatment and identified a large number of differential genes and metabolites. Based on the transcriptome data, we also found that Arg inhibited ripening, which coincided with changes in several physiological parameters and their corresponding gene transcripts, including firmness, anthocyanin content, sugar content, Arg content, indole-acetic acid (IAA) content, abscisic acid (ABA) content, and ethylene emissions. We also found that Arg induced the expression of heat-shock proteins (HSPs) and antioxidant enzyme genes, which improved strawberry stress resistance. This study elucidated the molecular mechanism by which exogenous Arg delays strawberry fruit ripening, providing some genetic information to help guide the future improvement and cultivation of strawberry.

The present study aimed to investigate the association of early-life exposure to famine with abdominal fat accumulation and function and further evaluate the influence of first-degree family history of diabetes and physical activity on this association. The present work analysed parts of the REACTION study. A total of 3033 women were enrolled. Central obesity was defined as waist circumferences (W) ≥ 85 cm. Chinese visceral adiposity index (CVAI) was used to evaluate visceral adipose distribution and function. Partial correlation analysis showed BMI, W, glycated Hb and CVAI were associated with early-life exposure to famine (both P < 0·05). Logistic regression showed that the risks of overall overweight/obesity and central obesity in fetal, early-childhood, mid-childhood and late-childhood exposed subgroups were increased significantly (all P < 0·05). Compared with the non-exposed group, the BMI, W and CVAI of fetal, early- to late-childhood exposed subgroups were significantly increased both in those with or without first-degree family history of diabetes and in those classified as physically active or inactive, respectively (all P < 0·05). The associations of BMI, W and CVAI with early-life exposure to famine were independent of their associations with first-degree family history of diabetes (all P < 0·01) or physical activity status (all P < 0·001). Early-life exposure to famine contributed to abdominal fat accumulation and dysfunction, which was independent of the influence of genetic background and exercise habits. Physical activity could serve as a supplementary intervention for women with high risk of central obesity.

AIMS: The factors associated with suicidal ideation among adolescents have been extensively characterised, but the mechanisms underlying the complexities of the relationship between experiences of childhood trauma and suicidal ideation have been less studied. This study examined the direct effect of childhood trauma on suicidal ideation on the one hand and whether school bullying victimisation and Internet addiction mediate the association between childhood trauma and suicidal ideation on the other hand. METHODS: This school-based mental health survey was carried out in Qinghai Province in Northwest China in December 2019. We employed standardised questionnaires to collect sociodemographic and target mental health outcomes. Hierarchical multiple logistic regression and structural equation modelling were performed for the data analyses. RESULTS: This study included 5864 university students. The prevalence of lifetime suicidal ideation and Internet addiction were 34.7% and 21.4%, respectively. Overall, 16.4% and 11.4% of participants reported experiences of childhood trauma and school bullying victimisation, respectively. There were direct effects of childhood trauma, school bullying victimisation and Internet addiction on suicidal ideation. The total effect of childhood trauma on suicidal ideation was 0.201 (p < 0.001). School bullying victimisation and Internet addiction mediated the relationship between childhood trauma and suicidal ideation. Internet addiction played a mediating role between school bullying and suicidal ideation. CONCLUSIONS: Childhood trauma had both direct and indirect effects on suicidal ideation; these effects were mediated by school bullying victimisation and Internet addiction in Chinese university students. Elucidating these relationships will therefore be useful in developing and implementing more targeted interventions and strategies to improve the mental well-being of Chinese university students.

RESUMO

Radiomics, a technology based on multimodal medical image processing and analysis, is able to extract automatically and analyze massive data from computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) via high-performance computer algorithm in order to pursue early diagnosis of disease, benign and malignant tumor discrimination, dynamic evaluation of disease treatment, and individualized precision therapy. To date, many studies demonstrate that radiomics not only has great potential in early diagnosis of lung cancer and prediction of genotype, treatment efficacy, as well as prognosis but also is based on imaging methods that are noninvasive, inexpensive, and repeatable. It does demonstrate precious values in guiding the clinical diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer, especially in the personalized and precise treatments and researches of lung cancer. However, the consistency and reproducibility of radiomics and the selection of robust characteristics still warrant further researches.

Background: Tumor mutation burden (TMB) has an important association with immunotherapy responses. TMB in the Chinese population has not been well established. Finding differences between the Chinese and Caucasian populations and elucidating the underlying biological mechanisms of high TMB might help develop more precise and effective means for TMB and immunotherapy response prediction. Methods: Chinese cancer patients fresh tissue (n=2,177), formalin-fixed, paraffin-embed (FFPE) specimens (n=3,294), and pleural fluid (n=189) were profiled using a 295- or 520-gene next-generation sequencing (NGS) panel. The association of the TMB status with a series of molecular features and biological pathways was determined using bootstrapping. Results: TMB, measured by 295- or 520-cancer-related gene panels, was correlated with whole-exome sequencing (WES) TMB based on the in silico simulation in The Cancer Genome Atlas cohort. The median TMB of our data was slightly higher than that from the Foundation Medicine Inc. (FMI) dataset. TMB was also slightly different within the same cancer type between the Chinese and Caucasian population. We discovered that the underlying pathways of TMB status varied greatly and sometimes had an opposite association with TMB across different cancer types. Moreover, we developed a 23-gene and a 16-gene signature to predict TMB prediction for lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) and lung squamous cell carcinoma (LUSC), respectively, indicating a histology-specific mechanism for driving high-TMB in lung cancer. Conclusions: TMB varies among different ethnic populations. Our findings extend the knowledge of the underlying biological mechanisms for high TMB and might be helpful for developing more precise and accessible TMB assessment panels and algorithms in more cancer types.

WHAT IS KNOWN AND OBJECTIVE: Acquired long QT syndrome secondary to drug-induced QT prolongation and torsades de pointes has been reported for antiviral drugs. However, no studies have reported an association between corrected QT (QTc) prolongation and antiviral therapy in patients with novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19). CASE DESCRIPTION: We present two cases from our institution in which patients with COVID-19 experienced QTc prolongation during treatment with antiviral therapy. Lopinavir/ritonavir, together with gender and drug-drug interactions, may have contributed to the induction of QTc prolongation in those patients. WHAT IS NEW AND CONCLUSION: Co-administration of QT-prolonging medications and drugs interfering with the metabolism of those medications must be considered in patients with COVID-19. Careful analysis of electrocardiograms for QTc duration should be performed at baseline and during antiviral therapy to identify individuals at high risk of arrhythmias.
