RESUMO

Mitochondrial dysfunction has been proven to play a critical role in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases. The phenomenon of intercellular mitochondrial transfer has been discovered in the cardiovascular system. Studies have shown that cell-to-cell mitochondrial transfer plays an essential role in regulating cardiovascular system development and maintaining normal tissue homeostasis under physiological conditions. In pathological conditions, damaged cells transfer dysfunctional mitochondria toward recipient cells to ask for help and take up exogenous functional mitochondria to alleviate injury. In this review, we summarized the mechanism of mitochondrial transfer in the cardiovascular system and outlined the fate and functional role of donor mitochondria. We also discussed the advantage and challenges of mitochondrial transfer strategies, including cell-based mitochondrial transplantation, extracellular vesicle-based mitochondrial transplantation, and naked mitochondrial transplantation, for the treatment of cardiovascular disorders. We hope this review will provide perspectives on mitochondrial-targeted therapeutics in cardiovascular diseases.

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is one type of the most common cancers, which results in the major death worldwide. This study focuses on the understanding of the molecular mechanism of lncRNA NR2F2-AS1 and its regulation on epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in the development of NSCLC. Expressions of lncRNA NR2F2-AS1, miR-545-5p, c-Met, biliverdin reductase (BVR), ATF-2 and EMT-related markers in NSCLC tissues and cells were measured by western blotting and RT-qPCR assays. The impact of lncRNA NR2F2-AS1 and miR-545-5p on the cell proliferation, migration, invasion and EMT were analyzed by CCK-8, colony formation, wound healing and transwell assays. The interactions among lncRNA NR2F2-AS1, miR-545-5p and c-Met predicted by bioinformatic analysis were evaluated through dual luciferase reporter assay and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). After generating tumor xenografts, immunohistochemistry was utilized to measure the expression of Ki-67 and EMT-related proteins in vivo. Our results showed that lncRNA NR2F2-AS1, c-Met, BVR and ATF-2 were overexpressed while miR-545-5p was silenced in NSCLC tissues and cells. Silencing of lncRNA NR2F2-AS1 or upregulating miR-545-5p significantly inhibited the cell proliferation, migration, invasion and EMT process. The EMT process could be inhibited by suppressing c-Met/BVR/ATF-2 axis. The tumor xenograft experiments demonstrated that the tumor growth and EMT process were significantly inhibited by silencing lncRNA NR2F2-AS1 or overexpression of miR-545-5p in vivo. LncRNA NR2F2-AS1 promoted the NSCLC development through suppressing miR-545-5p to activate EMT process through c-Met/BVR/ATF-2 axis. Our study indicated that lncRNA NR2F2-AS1 and miR-545-5p could be used as potential therapeutic targets to improve NSCLC treatment.

PURPOSE: To develop a nomogram model for predicting local progress-free survival (LPFS) in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) patients treated with concurrent chemo-radiotherapy (CCRT). METHODS: We collected the clinical data of ESCC patients treated with CCRT in our hospital. Eligible patients were randomly divided into training cohort and validation cohort. The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) with COX regression was performed to select optimal radiomic features to calculate Rad-score for predicting LPFS in the training cohort. The univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to identify the predictive clinical factors for developing a nomogram model. The C-index was used to assess the performance of the predictive model and calibration curve was used to evaluate the accuracy. RESULTS: A total of 221 ESCC patients were included in our study, with 155 patients in training cohort and 66 patients in validation cohort. Seventeen radiomic features were selected by LASSO COX regression analysis to calculate Rad-score for predicting LPFS. The patients with a Rad-score ≥ 0.1411 had high risk of local recurrence, and those with a Rad-score < 0.1411 had low risk of local recurrence. Multivariate analysis showed that N stage, CR status and Rad-score were independent predictive factors for LPFS. A nomogram model was built based on the result of multivariate analysis. The C-index of the nomogram was 0.745 (95% CI 0.7700-0.790) in training cohort and 0.723(95% CI 0.654-0.791) in validation cohort. The 3-year LPFS rate predicted by the nomogram model was highly consistent with the actual 3-year LPFS rate both in the training cohort and the validation cohort. CONCLUSION: We developed and validated a prediction model based on radiomic features and clinical factors, which can be used to predict LPFS of patients after CCRT. This model is conducive to identifying the patients with ESCC benefited more from CCRT.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to compare the procedure and treatment outcomes of using either direct stenting alone following pharmacomechanical thrombectomy or continued catheter-directed thrombolysis after stenting for treatment of acute left iliofemoral deep vein thrombosis while clot removal degree achieved grade III. METHODS: From March 2018 to May 2019, 82 patients who underwent iliac venous stenting for treatment of acute left iliofemoral deep vein thrombosis with iliac vein stenosis after pharmacomechanical thrombectomy therapy using the AngioJet system while Clot removal degree achieved grade III were divided into two groups: Direct stenting alone group (n = 39) and continued catheter-directed thrombolysis after stenting group (n = 43). Comparisons were made regarding the treatment outcomes, stent patency rate, and Villalta scale between these two groups. RESULTS: No serious perioperative complications occurred. The mean urokinase dose and hospitalization time in the stenting alone group and continued catheter-directed thrombolysis after the stenting group were 0.30 million U versus 1.76 ± 0.54 million U and 4.85 ± 0.93 days versus 6.33 ± 1.02 days, (P < .001). In the first 30 days after the operation, there were 3 recurrent episodes of deep vein thrombosis in the stenting alone group (P = 0.064). Each patient has completed at least one year of follow-up, the mean follow-up was 15.95 ± 3.44 months. Overall cumulative stent patency rates were 87.2% in stenting alone group and 97.7% in continued catheter-directed thrombolysis after stenting group at 12months (P = 0.037). The Villalta scores at 12 months had a significant difference between the two groups. The mean Villalta scores in the stenting alone group and continued catheter-directed thrombolysis after the stenting group were 4.44 ± 1.63 and 1.63 ± 1.29, respectively (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: When the clot removal degree of pharmacomechanical thrombectomy thrombectomy reaches grade III, both stenting alone and continued catheter-directed thrombolysis after stenting are effective treatment modalities. For young patients with low bleeding risk, continued catheter-directed thrombolysis after stenting has a better patency rate and a lower 1-year post-thrombotic syndrome risk and does not increase major bleeding events. However, it may increase the time and costs of hospitalization accordingly.

In this study, luteolin-oxidized lotus root starch (OLRS) nanoparticles (NPs) were developed to improve the stability and antioxidant activity of luteolin. Results showed that a stable luteolin-OLRS NPs was formed using luteolin and OLRS (oxidation degree, 15%) in the weight ratio of 3:1, as well as anti-solvent and solvent in the volume ratio of 10:1. Under this condition, the particle size, polydispersity index and zeta-potential of luteolin-OLRS NPs was 305 nm, 0.173 and -20.8 mV, respectively. The analysis of transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffractometer and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy demonstrated that the luteolin was successfully encapsulated in OLRS NPs, giving an encapsulation efficiency of 87.2%. The release characteristic and antioxidant activity of encapsulated luteolin were further investigated. Results exhibited that the OLRS NPs enabled luteolin to be stable in simulated gastric fluid and sustained release in simulated intestinal fluid, leading to the enhancement of antioxidant activity of luteolin.

Retinoblastoma (RB) is the most common intraocular tumor among children. Leucine-rich pentatricopeptide repeat (PPR)-motif-containing protein (LRPPRC), a suppressor gene of autophagy, has been proven to play a regulatory role in tumor progression. However, little is known about functional roles and mechanisms of LRPPRC in RB progression. First, we performed a detailed analysis for RB and normal control. The expression of LRPPRC in the RB tissues was significantly higher than that in normal tissues. Moreover, LRPPRC suppression could repress tumor cell migration, invasion, glycolysis, and reactive oxygen species (ROS)/hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF1-α) pathway activation by mediating autophagy. Furthermore, overexpression of HIF1-α partially reversed the above changes induced by LRPPRC knockdown. The regulation of LRPPRC on tumor metastasis and glycolysis was also validated by a xenograft tumor assay. In summary, LRPPRC could regulate metastasis and glycolysis of RB by mediating autophagy suppression and further activating the ROS/HIF1-α pathway, and LRPPRC could be a promising prognostic biomarker for RB.

Studies demonstrated that the receptor of advanced glycation end products (RAGE) induced epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) formation in the lens epithelial cells (LECs) of diabetic cataracts. This work investigated how 3H-1,2-dithiole-3-thione (D3T) reduces EMT formation in LECs of the fructose-induced diabetes mellitus (DM). LECs were isolated during cataract surgery from patients without DM or with DM. In a rat model, fructose (10% fructose, eight weeks) with or without D3T (10 mg/kg/day) treatment induced DM, as verified by blood pressure and serum parameter measurements. We observed that the formation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) was significantly higher in epithelial human lens of DM (+) compared to DM (-) cataracts. Aldose reductase (AKR1B1), AcSOD2, and 3-NT were significantly enhanced in the rat lens epithelial sections of fructose-induced DM, however, the phosphorylation level of AMPKT172 showed a reversed result. Interestingly, administration of D3T reverses the fructose-induced effects in LECs. These results indicated that AMPKT172 may be required for reduced superoxide generation and the pathogenesis of diabetic cataract. Administration of D3T reverses the fructose-induced EMT formation the LECs of fructose-induced DM. These novel findings suggest that the D3T may be a candidate for the pharmacological prevention of cataracts in patients with DM.

Some bioactive ingredients in foods are unstable and easily degraded during processing, storage, transportation and digestion. To enhance the stability and bioavailability, some food hydrogels have been developed to encapsulate these unstable compounds. In this paper, the preparation methods, formation mechanisms, physicochemical and functional properties of some protein hydrogels, polysaccharide hydrogels and protein-polysaccharide composite hydrogels were comprehensively summarized. Since the hydrogels have the ability to control the release and enhance the bioavailability of bioactive ingredients, the encapsulation and release mechanisms of polyphenols, flavonoids, carotenoids, vitamins and probiotics by hydrogels were further discussed. This review will provide a comprehensive reference for the deep application of polysaccharide/protein hydrogels in food industry.

Acute abdominal pain during pregnancy is challenging, both from a diagnostic and management perspective. A non-localized, persistent pain out of proportion to physical examination is a sign that advanced imaging may be necessary. Mesenteric venous thrombosis in a pregnant patient is extremely rare, but if diagnosis is delayed, can be potentially fatal to both the mother and the fetus. We present here a pregnant patient in the tenth week of gestation with classic clinical manifestations of mesenteric vein thrombosis and the corresponding findings on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT).

RESUMO

T cells participate in the repair process and immune response in the CNS post-traumatic injury and play both a beneficial and harmful role. Together with nerve cells and other immune cells, they form a microenvironment in the CNS post-traumatic injury. The repair of traumatic CNS injury is a long-term process. T cells contribute to the repair of the injury site to influence the recovery. Recently, with the advance of new techniques, such as mass spectrometry-based flow cytometry, modern live-cell imaging, etc, research focusing on T cells is becoming one of the valuable directions for the future therapy of traumatic CNS injury. In this review, we summarized the infiltration, contribution and regulation of T cells in post-traumatic injury, discussed the clinical significance and predicted the future research direction.

Background: Superior outcomes after surgical treatment over medical treatment for primary aldosteronism (PA) has been reported in small-scale clinical studies, but no solid conclusion has been drawn as results of large randomized trials are lacking. Methods: We performed a search of PubMed, MEDLINE, Embase and Cochrane Library for randomized or observational studies that investigated cardiovascular outcomes in patients with PA undergoing medical versus surgical treatment. Meta-analyses of both composite and individual outcomes were conducted. Risks of bias of the included studies were assessed with Risk Of Bias In Non-randomized Studies of Interventions (ROBINS-I) checklist. Trial sequential analysis (TSA) was performed to control the risk of random errors and assess whether the results in our meta-analysis were conclusive. Results: A total of 12 studies, including a total of 6148 PA patients, were included in the meta-analysis. The results of meta-analyses demonstrated lower incidence of composite cardiovascular outcomes among PA patients who underwent surgical treatment over medical treatment (odds ratio (OR): 0.49). Surgical treatment also led to less incidence of persistence of hypertension (OR of non-cure hypertension: 0.31). Fewer major cardiovascular events and mortality events were observed (OR: 0.60) after surgical treatment. TSA result showed that the required information size was 2151 and the cumulative Z curve crossed the futility boundary and reached the required information size. Conclusion: Superior performance of surgical treatment over medical treatment is confirmed with meta-analyses in terms of lower incidences of composite cardiovascular outcomes and non-cure of hypertension. Hence, adrenalectomy could now be concluded as the treatment of choice for lateralized PA.

OBJECTIVES: Tuberculosis (TB) remains one of the public health problems worldwide. Rapid, sensitive and cost-effective diagnosis of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M.tb) is critical for TB control. METHODS: We developed a novel M.tb DNA detection platform (nominated as TB-QUICK) which combined loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) and CRISPR-Cas12b detection. TB-QUICK was performed on pulmonary or plasma samples collected from 138 pulmonary TB (PTB) patients, 21 non-TB patients and 61 close contacts to TB patients. Acid-fast bacillus (AFB) smear, M.tb culture and GeneXpert MTB/RIF (Xpert) assays were routinely conducted in parallel. RESULTS: By targeting M.tb IS6110, TB-QUICK platform could detect as low as 1.3 copy/µL M.tb DNA within 2 h. In pulmonary TB samples, TB-QUICK exhibited improved overall sensitivity of 86.8% over M.tb culture (66.7%) and Xpert (70.4%), with the specificity of 95.2%. More significantly, TB-QUICK exhibited a superior sensitivity in AFB-negative samples (80.5%) compared to Xpert (57.1%) and M.tb culture (46.2%). In the detection of plasma M.tb DNA by TB-QUICK, 41.2% sensitivity for AFB-positive and 31.7% for AFB-negative patients were achieved. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, TB-QUICK exhibits rapidity and sensitivity for M.tb DNA detection with the superiority in smear-negative paucibacillary TB patients. The clinical application of TB-QUICK in TB diagnosis needs to be further validated in larger cohort.

RESUMO

The central nervous system (CNS) post-traumatic injury can cause severe nerve damage with devastating consequences. However, its pathophysiological mechanisms remain vague. There is still an urgent need for more effective treatments. Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are non-coding RNAs that can form covalently closed RNA circles. Through second-generation sequencing technology, microarray analysis, bioinformatics, and other technologies, recent studies have shown that a number of circRNAs are differentially expressed after traumatic brain injury (TBI) or spinal cord injury (SCI). These circRNAs play important roles in the proliferation, inflammation, and apoptosis in CNS post-traumatic injury. In this review, we summarize the expression and functions of circRNAs in CNS in recent studies, as well as the circRNA-miRNA-mRNA interaction networks. The potential clinical value of circRNAs as a therapeutic target is also discussed.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical features and prognostic factors of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) children with P2RY8-CRLF2 gene rearrangement. METHODS: A total of 108 children with B-cell ALL (B-ALL) were diagnosed and systematically treated according to Chinese Children's Leukemia Group (CCLG) -ALL 2008 in our hospital from January 2016 to December 2016. The 108 patients were divided into two groups according to the result of mutiplex polymerase chain reaction: group with P2RY8-CRLF2 gene rearrangement and group without P2RY8-CRLF2 gene rearrangement. The ALL children with P2RY8-CRLF2 gene rearrangement were all treated by CCLG-ALL 2008 high-risk group (HR) regimens, and the ALL children in group without P2RY8-CRLF2 gene rearrangement received different intensity chemotherapy according to clinical risk classification. RESULTS: Five (4 male and 1 female) out of 108 patients with B-ALL had P2RY8-CRLF2 gene rearrangement. In the 5 B-ALL patients with P2RY8-CRLF2 gene rearrangement, the median age of the was 4 (2-6) years old and the median WBC count was 26.2 (2.46-525.1)×109/L. These patients presented different immunophenotype, including 3 cases of common B-ALL and 2 cases of pre B-ALL. Four patients carried a normal karyotype and 1 patient carried 46, XY, der (20) [22]/46, XY[2]. For the children with P2RY8-CRLF2 gene rearrangement, 1 patient (20%) could not achieve complete remission (CR), and minimal residual disease (MRD) of 2 patients (40%) was higher than 1% on day 33 of induction chemotherapy; while in group without P2RY8-CRLF2 gene rearrangement, all the patient achieved CR, and MRD in 6 patients (5.8%) was higher than 1% on day 33 of induction chemotherapy. The 3 year event-free survival (EFS) of ALL children in group with P2RY8-CRLF2 gene rearrangement was significantly lower than that in group without P2RY8-CRLF2 gene rearrangement (60.0%±21.9% vs 85.9%±3.9%) (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: The early treatment response and prognosis of ALL children with P2RY8-CRLF2 gene rearrangement are worse, and more effective protocol is needed for this subtype patients.

INTRODUCTION: The inflammatory and immune cells have an important impact on Hodgkin lymphoma (HL). The derived neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (dNLR) has been confirmed to have a similar prognostic value as the neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in many kinds of tumors, but it has not been explored as a prognostic marker for Hodgkin lymphoma patients. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study is to evaluate the prognostic value of dNLR and NLR in HL. METHODS: This retrospective study included 213 newly diagnosed HL patients from 2008 to 2019. Then, the prognostic significance of dNLR and NLR in these patients was evaluated. Meanwhile, subgroup analyses based on the Ann Arbor stage and histotype were also carried out. Finally, propensity score matching was used to reduce selection bias. RESULTS: Patients with dNLR ≥ 2.1 showed shorter overall survival (OS) (P = 0.006). Also, patients with NLR ≥ 3.0 showed worse OS (P = 0.005) and progression-free survival (PFS) (P = 0.031). These results were also found in patients with early-stage and mixed cellularity subtype HL. Besides, high dNLR represented an independent prognostic marker for OS and high NLR remained an independent prognostic factor for OS and PFS on multivariable analysis. CONCLUSION: Elevated dNLR and NLR were related to worse survival in HL patients. For the first time, the dNLR has shown the potential to be a new prognostic factor for patients with HL.

The levels of fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) rapidly increases after acute kidney injury (AKI). However, the role of FGF23 in AKI is still unclear. Here, we observe that pretreatment with FGF23 protein into ischemia-reperfusion induced AKI mice ameliorates kidney injury by promoting renal tubular regeneration, proliferation, vascular repair, and attenuating tubular damage. In vitro assays demonstrate that SDF-1 induces upregulation of its receptor CXCR4 in endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) via a non-canonical NF-κB signaling pathway. FGF23 crosstalks with the SDF-1/CXCR4 signaling and abrogates SDF-1-induced EPC senescence and migration, but not angiogenesis, in a Klotho-independent manner. The downregulated pro-angiogenic IL-6, IL-8, and VEGF-A expressions after SDF-1 infusion are rescued after adding FGF23. Diminished therapeutic ability of SDF-1-treated EPCs is counteracted by FGF23 in a SCID mouse in vivo AKI model. Together, these data highlight a revolutionary and important role that FGF23 plays in the nephroprotection of IR-AKI.

BACKGROUND: Currently, there are no circulating diagnostic biomarkers for gastric neuroendocrine neoplasms (g-NENs). In previous studies, we found that miRNA-202-3p is overexpressed in the tumour tissue of type 1 g-NEN. We speculated that miRNA-202-3p is also likely to be highly expressed in circulating blood. METHODS: A total of 27 patients with type 1 g-NEN and 27 age- and sex-matched control participants were enrolled in this study. The miRNA-202-3p levels in serum obtained from the participants were measured by qRT-PCR. The expression level of miRNA-202-3p in the samples was calculated by comparison with a standard curve. RESULTS: The clinical characteristics of the patients were similar to those of the patient samples in previous reports. Expression of miRNA-202-3p was significantly higher in the patient group (3.84 × 107 copies/nl) than in the control group (0.635 × 107 copies/nl). The area under the ROC curve (AUC) was 0.878 (95% CI: 0.788-0.968), and the optimal cut-off point was approximately 1.12 × 107 copies/nl. The sensitivity and specificity were 88.9% and 77.8%, respectively. CONCLUSION: This study suggests that miRNA-202-3p is potentially useful as a biomarker of type 1 g-NEN; further investigation and verification should be performed in future research.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the clinical effect of single acupoint [Yaotu (extra)] electroacupuncture (EA) therapy on lumbar intervertebral disc herniation (LIDH) and its promotion and application in community medical institutions. METHODS: This research adopted a three-level promotion model, and used multi-center collaboration topics as a platform. A total of 240 patients with LIDH were divided into a group A (top three hospital, 80 cases, 3 cases dropped off), a group B (secondary hospital, 80 cases, 8 cases dropped off), and a group C (community health center, 80 cases, 7 cases dropped off). All groups were treated with EA at a single acupoint [Yaotu (extra)] under the guidance of a unified experimental protocol. The EA was given 60 min each time and performed 3 times a week for a total of 2 weeks. The changes of visual analogue scale (VAS) scores of three groups before and after each treatment were compared, and the clinical efficacy was evaluated. RESULTS: Compared with before each treatment, the VAS scores of three groups after each treatment decreased (P<0.05). Except for the second and fifth treatments, the immediate effect in the group A was higher than that in the group B and C (P<0.05). The total effective rate of group A, group B, and group C respectively was 90.9% (70/77), 93.1% (67/72), 86.3% (63/73), and there was no statistically significant difference among the three groups (P>0.05). CONCLUSION: The single acupoint EA therapy has a significant effect in the treatment of LIDH, can quickly relieve the pain symptoms, and has the characteristics of simple operation and easy control, suitable for promotion and application in primary hospitals.

BACKGROUND: Epigenetics, especially DNA methylation, plays an important role in the pathogenesis of primary Sjogren syndrome (pSS). Our study aimed to reveal the role of DNA methylation in peripheral monocytes of pSS patients. METHODS: A total of 11 pSS patients and five age-matched healthy controls (HCs) were included in this study. Monocytes were isolated from peripheral blood mononuclear cells using magnetic microbeads. DNA methylation profiles were generated using Human Methylation 850K BeadChips. RESULTS: In monocytes from pSS patients, we identified 2819 differentially methylated positions (DMPs), comprising 1977 hypomethylated- and 842 hypermethylated-DMPs, corresponding to 1313 unique genes when compared with HCs. IFI44L, MX1, PAARP9, and IFITM1, which influence the interferon (IFN) signaling pathway, were among the genes hypomethylated in pSS. Functional analysis of genes with a minimum of two DMPs showed involvement in antigen binding, transcriptional regulation, cell adhesion, IFN-γ pathway, type I IFN pathway, antigen presentation, Epstein-Barr virus infection, human T-lymphotropic virus type 1 virus infection, and metabolic disease-related pathways. In addition, patients with higher serum IgG levels exhibited enrichment in Notch signaling and metabolic-related pathways. Upon comparing monocytes with salivary gland epithelial cells, an important overlap was observed in the cell cycle, cell senescence, and interleukin-17 signaling pathways. The differentially methylated genes were more enriched in the ribosome- and AMP-activated protein kinase signaling pathway in anti-Ro/SSA and anti-La/SSB autoantibodies double-positive patients. CONCLUSION: Genome-wide DNA methylation profiling revealed significant differences in DNA methylation in monocytes isolated from patients with pSS.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have tracked hand injury patients past the acute care period. Postdischarge tracking of hand injury patients may identify time points most patients require assistance, which can help direct interventions to reduce post-hand injury sequelae. OBJECTIVE: To examine hand injury patients' experiences during early recovery to illness perceptions, disabilities, and quality of life and to identify predictors of quality of life at 1 month and 3 months after hospital discharge. METHODS: This prospective observational study of hand injury patients was performed at a teaching hospital in Taiwan. Data were collected at patient discharge, 1 month, and 3 months after discharge, from January 2017 to October 2018. The variables measured included illness perceptions, disabilities, and quality of life. RESULTS: A total of 117 patients participated in the study. The patients reported more positive illness perceptions at 3 months versus 1 month after discharge. The impact of disabilities on patient work was significantly greater at 1 month than at 3 months after discharge. Quality of life was better at 3 months than at 1 month after discharge. Predictors of quality of life after hospital discharge were demographic variables, clinical variables, and illness perceptions. Patients with lower education reported poorer psychological quality of life after discharge. CONCLUSION: Primary care providers should perform a comprehensive assessment of patients prior to their discharge. Patients should undergo regular follow-ups to reduce comorbidities and improve their outcomes.
