RESUMO

Epibiosis is a common phenomenon, found in different taxa of aquatic animals. This relationship could occur as hyperepibiosis, when a basibiont being also an epibiont, providing a stable substrate for the hypersymbiont. Here we reported a ciliate-bryozoan-crustacean hyperepibiosis in Mandovi River mouth, Goa, West coast of India. We provided descriptions and characterization of the crab Atergatis sp., serving as basibiont for the bryozoan Triticella pedicellata (Alder, 1857), in turn colonized with (hyperepibionts) the ciliates Paracineta saifulae (Mereschkowsky, 1877) and Cothurnia ceramicola Kahl, 1933. Paracineta saifulae and Cothurnia ceramicola are reported here for first time from the Indian Ocean.

RESUMO

A compilation of the ciliated species found on freshwater and marine ostracods as epibiont or parasite (endobiont) has been carried out based on published records. The checklist includes the taxonomic position of each species of epibiontic and endobiontic ciliate, the species of basibiont ostracodes, the geographic zones and the bibliographic references where they were recorded. Altogether 7 suctorian, 29 peritrich, one apostome and one scuticociliatid species were listed. Two of recorded suctorian species are possible specific to marine ostracodes, whereas only one, Tokophrya sibirica to freshwater hosts. Fourteen species of peritrichs are likely specific to freshwater ostracodes, while three possible specific to marine ostracode hosts. Other suctorian and peritrich ciliate species were found on a variety of host taxa. One species of scuticociliatid was recorded as endobiont in ostracod.

RESUMO

The article deals with the report of 5 suctorians viz. Lecanophryella satyanandani (Santhakumari, 1986), Paracineta karunakarani Santhakumari, 1986, Ephelota gemmipara (Hertwig, 1876), Acineta foetida Maupas, 1881 and Pelagacineta sp. on marine pelagic ostracods Cypridina dentata (Müller, 1906) from new localities of the Arabian Sea. Diagnostic characters of Paracineta karunakarani are emended. Ephelota gemmipara (Hertwig, 1876) and Acineta foetida Maupas, 1881 are reported here for the first time on planktonic marine ostracods. Pelagacineta sp. is reported for the first time as epibiont on ostracods and from the Indian Ocean.

RESUMO

The article presents a review of the literature on known representatives of the genus Lecanophryella containing general characteristics of the members of this genus, information on morphology and data on distribution. Diagnostic characters of L. satyanandani is emended based on material collected from a new locality. A new species, Lecanophryella indica as epibiont on the body surface of cyclopoid copepod from the Zuari estuary, west coast of India is also described.

RESUMO

Based on published records and original data, a list of the epibiont suctorian and peritrich ciliates (Ciliophora) on halacarid and hydrachnid mites is presented. Altogether 13 suctorian and 10 peritrich species from hydrachnid and halacarid mites were listed. From this list, six suctorian and one peritrich species have been reported from halacarid mites, while four suctorian and four peritrich species were found on hydrachnid mites determined up to species level. The remaining specimens were determined upto the generic level. The halacarid and hydrachnid species do not share any suctorian and peritrich species and some of the ciliate species are specific to certain taxonomic groups of the hosts. The host specificity of both suctorian and peritrich ciliates, localization on the host body and environment are discussed. Some ciliate species specific to hydrachnid mites prefer lotic or lentic habitats. In most cases, both suctorian and peritrich ciliates prefer only marine or only fresh water bodies. It was also mentioned that both suctorian and peritrich ciliates have not distinct preferences in localization on their host body.

RESUMO

Five species of suctorian ciliates belonging to four different genera attached to meiofaunal organisms of Maldivian archipelago (Suvadiva Atoll) were documented. Three rare species (Acineta sp., Thecacineta urceolata Liao & Dovgal, 2015 and Limnoricus ceter Jankowski, 1981) and one common suctorian ciliate Thecacineta calix (Schröder, 1907) are re-described from nematodes (Croconema cinctum Cobb, 1920, Desmodorella tenuispiculum Allgén, 1928 and Desmodora sp.) and harpacticoid copepod basibionts. In addition, Trophogemma colantonii n. sp. colonizing the abdomen and legs of the harpacticoid copepod Stenhelia sp. is described. The new species differs from the relative species for the less flattened cell body, the absence of both lateral bundles of tentacles and separate lateral tentacles as well as for the presence of longitudinal ribs along the cuticle. The data obtained in this survey give not only new important information on the taxonomy and distribution of Suctorea, but also new insights on their relationship with meiofaunal organisms in one of the most diverse and productive marine micro-habitat of carbonate sediments.

RESUMO

A suctorian ciliate Loricophrya bosporica sp. nov. is described from the body surface of nematodes of genus Desmoscolex collected in oxic/anoxic boundary of the Bosporus outlet area of the Black Sea. The new species differs from relative species L. sivertseni by development of its body, which takes no more than half, or a third of the lorica length, absence of crown-like projections at the lorica edge as for adhesive disk. From L. tuba new species differs by considerably shorter stylotheca and prevalence to nematode host instead of echinoderms.

RESUMO

The article is to present a review of the taxonomic literature of pilisuctorid ciliates and new data from samples taken in Ukraine and Mexico. In order to contribute to the knowledge of this specialised ciliate group, the present article contains the general characteristics of order Pilisuctorida members, information on morphology and life cycles of all its representatives and some own data on distribution of three species of genus Conidophrys in Ukraine and Mexico. The taxonomic composition of this order, and diagnoses of all taxa are also included, as well the keys to the taxa.

RESUMO

A new species of suctorian in the genus Periacineta, epibiotic on aquatic bugs (Hemiptera, Heteroptera, Nepomorpha), is described on the basis of morphological characteristics of the cell body, lorica, tentacular placement, and stalk, and its 18S rRNA partial sequence gene. Periacineta mexicana n. sp. is a loricate suctorian with elongate body and rounded apical region; tentacles are distributed randomly over apical region and not grouped into fascicles. Macronucleus in adult is elongate and located centrally. The suctorian usually forms closely aggregated pseudocolonies. We provide morphological data based on optical and scanning electron microscopy. A comparison with similar congeners, and emended diagnosis of the genus Periacineta also are provided. The ciliates were found attached to the first two pairs of legs of Mexican notonectids Buenoa pallens and Buenoa spp. (backswimmers).

RESUMO

Copidognathus nautilei Bartsch, 1997, from a hydrothermal vent field of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge at about 13 degrees N, 45 degrees W and 4090 m depth, was infested with the suctorian Corynophrya abyssalis n. sp., with up to 58 epizoans per mite. The new suctorian has a sacciform body with seven longitudinal ribs, a compact macronucleus and up to 40 non-retractile tentacles. The budding is exogenous. The systematic position of the new species and the genus Corynophrya is discussed, as well as infestation rates and sites of suctorians on their halacarid hosts.
