RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Automatic segmentation of pulmonary airway tree is a challenging task in many clinical applications, including developing computer-aided detection and diagnosis schemes of lung diseases. OBJECTIVE: To segment the pulmonary airway tree from the computed tomography (CT) chest images using a novel automatic method proposed in this study. METHODS: This method combines a two-pass region growing algorithm with gray-scale morphological reconstruction and leakage elimination. The first-pass region growing is implemented to obtain a rough airway tree. The second-pass region growing and gray-scale morphological reconstruction are used to detect the distal airways. Finally, leakage detection is performed to remove leakage and refine the airway tree. RESULTS: Our methods were compared with the gold standards. Forty-five clinical CT lung image scan cases were used in the experiments. Statistics on tree division order, branch number, and airway length were adopted for evaluation. The proposed method detected up to 12 generations of bronchi. On average, 148.85 branches were extracted with a false positive rate of 0.75%. CONCLUSIONS: The results show that our method is accurate for pulmonary airway tree segmentation. The strategy of separating the leakage detection from the segmenting process is feasible and promising for ensuring a high branch detected rate with a low leakage volume.

An enantioselective (3+2) cycloaddition of enals and cyclic N-sulfonyl trifluoromethyl ketimines via N-heterocyclic carbene-catalyzed homoenolate addition is described. This reaction can efficiently construct fused N-heterocycle γ-lactams bearing two adjacent chiral centers with >20 : 1 dr and 94-99% ee, with one chiral center as a trifluoromethylated α-tetrasubstituted carbon stereocenter.

OBJECTIVE: To build and validate a CT radiomic model for pre-operatively predicting lymph node metastasis in early cervical carcinoma. METHODS AND MATERIALS: A data set of 150 patients with Stage IB1 to IIA2 cervical carcinoma was retrospectively collected from the Nanfang hospital and separated into a training cohort (n = 104) and test cohort (n = 46). A total of 348 radiomic features were extracted from the delay phase of CT images. Mann-Whitney U test, recursive feature elimination, and backward elimination were used to select key radiomic features. Ridge logistics regression was used to build a radiomic model for prediction of lymph node metastasis (LNM) status by combining radiomic and clinical features. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) and κ test were applied to verify the model. RESULTS: Two radiomic features from delay phase CT images and one clinical feature were associated with LNM status: log-sigma-2-0 mm-3D_glcm_Idn (p = 0.01937), wavelet-HL_firstorder_Median (p = 0.03592), and Stage IB (p = 0.03608). Radiomic model was built consisting of the three features, and the AUCs were 0.80 (95% confidence interval: 0.70 ~ 0.90) and 0.75 (95% confidence intervalI: 0.53 ~ 0.93) in training and test cohorts, respectively. The κ coefficient was 0.84, showing excellent consistency. CONCLUSION: A non-invasive radiomic model, combining two radiomic features and a International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics stage, was built for prediction of LNM status in early cervical carcinoma. This model could serve as a pre-operative tool. ADVANCES IN KNOWLEDGE: A noninvasive CT radiomic model, combining two radiomic features and the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics stage, was built for prediction of LNM status in early cervical carcinoma.

Insomnia is a common health problem in modern societies. GABA, an inhibitory neurotransmitter, can promote relaxation and reduce anxiety. In this study, milk was fermented with Lactobacillus brevis DL1-11, a strain with high GABA-producing capacity. The potential beneficial effects of this fermented milk on anxiety and sleep quality were evaluated in animal experiments. Sixty mice were divided into control, non-GABA fermented milk (NGFM), low-dose GABA fermented milk (LGFM, 8.83 mg/kg.bw), medium-dose GABA fermented milk (MGFM, 16.67 mg/kg.bw), high-dose GABA fermented milk (HGFM, 33.33 mg/kg.bw) and diazepam groups. The results of open field test and elevated plus-maze test indicated decreases in anxiety behavior after oral HGFM administration. Moreover, mice in the HGFM group exhibited a significantly prolonged sleep time after an intraperitoneal injection of sodium pentobarbital and a shortened sleep latency after an intraperitoneal injection of sodium barbital. These results indicate a beneficial effect of HGFM on sleep. Additionally, significant increases in the relative abundances of Ruminococcus, Adlercreutzia and Allobaculum and the levels of some short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), such as butyric acid, were observed in the HGFM group. The results suggest that GABA-fermented milk may improve sleep and the protective pathways may involve in regulation of gut microbiota and increase of SCFAs level.

A fluorinated metal-organic framework material (F-MOF) was successfully prepared using tetrafluoroterephthalic acid (H2tfbdc) as the ligand and Zn(II) as the central metal ion. The F-MOF exhibited excellent adsorption performance for perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), with a maximum adsorption capacity of 419.8 mg g-1. A sensitive dispersive solid-phase extraction using the F-MOF as an adsorbent, coupled with GC-MS analysis, was developed for detecting trace PFOA with a limit of detection as low as 2.6 ng L-1. This method was applied to detect PFOA in environmental water samples, yielding satisfactory results.

Introduction: Laparoscopic salpingo-oophorectomy and pelvic lymphadenectomy place the ureter at risk. Although traditional anatomic studies indicate that ureters generally cross over the common iliac artery in the pelvic inlet, the view is often different during surgery. Hence, digital three-dimensional models have been utilized to solve this conundrum. Our study aimed to evaluate the anatomic relation between the iliac artery and the ureter in the pelvic inlet.Material and methods: A medical image processing system processed data collected from 129 female patients, and digital 3D models of the iliac artery and ureter were used to study their anatomic relation. Left- and right-side data were compared using Pearson's χ2 analysis.Results: Two different anatomic relations were found immediately posterior to the ureter: Common iliac arteries were present in 33.2% and external iliac arteries in 76.8%. The mean distances from the point at which the ureter crossed over the iliac artery until the bifurcation of the artery was 8.8 ± 12.2 mm in the left pelvis and 12.4 ± 10.8 mm in the right pelvis - different from that of the traditional anatomic study.Conclusion: In the future, these models and digital anatomical data could help avoid surgical complications.

BACKGROUND: ERp57 dysfunction has been shown to contribute to tumorigenesis in multiple malignances. However, the role of ERp57 in clear cell renal carcinoma (ccRCC) remains unclear. METHODS: Cell proliferation ability was measured by MTT and colony forming assays. Western blotting and quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) were performed to measure protein and mRNA expression. Co-immunoprecipitation (CoIP) and proximity ligation assay (PLA) were performed to detect protein-protein interaction. Chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP), ribonucleoprotein immunoprecipitation (RIP), and oligo pull-down were used to confirm DNA-protein and RNA-protein interactions. Promoter luciferase analysis was used to detect transcription factor activity. RESULTS: Here we found ERp57 was overexpressed in ccRCC tissues, and the higher levels of ERp57 were correlated with poor survival in patients with ccRCC. In vivo and in vitro experiments showed that ccRCC cell proliferation was enhanced by ERp57 overexpression and inhibited by ERp57 deletion. Importantly, we found ERp57 positively regulated ILF3 expression in ccRCC cells. Mechanically, ERp57 was shown to bind to STAT3 protein and enhance the STAT3-mediated transcriptional activity of ILF3. Furthermore, ILF3 levels were increased in ccRCC tissues and associated with poor prognosis. Interestingly, we revealed that ILF3 could bind to ERp57 and positively regulate its expression by enhancing its mRNA stability. Furthermore, ccRCC cell proliferation was moderated via the ERp57/STAT3/ILF3 feedback loop. CONCLUSIONS: In summary, our results indicate that the ERp57/STAT3/ILF3 feedback loop plays a key role in the oncogenesis of ccRCC and provides a potential therapeutic target for ccRCC treatment.

OBJECTIVE: The objective ofthis study was to assess the association between thyroid hormone (TH) levels in follicular fluid (FF) and serum and to determine whether THs impact assisted reproductive technology (ART) outcomes. METHODS: This study enrolled 299 women undergoing ART. Blood samples were drawn on the day of human chorionic gonadotrophin (HCG) administrationand analysed for thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), thyroxine(T4), triiodothyronine(T3),free T4 (fT4),free T3(fT3), thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb) and thyroglobulin antibody (TGAb) levels. FF was obtained on the oocyte pick up (OPU) day and analysed forTSH, T4, T3, fT4, fT3, TPOAb, TgAb and estradiol levels. RESULTS: (1) There were significant positive correlations between serum and FF TH and thyroid autoantibody levels. Statistically significant differences were discovered in serum and FF levels of TSH (p ≤ 0.001), T4 (p ≤ 0.001), T3 (p ≤ 0.001), TPOAbs (p ≤ 0.001) and TGAbs (p = 0.021). (2) Serum T4 levels [121.9(104.8,140.8) vs 114.1(98.6,130.6) nmol/l, p = 0.026], serum fT4 levels[(19.0(17.7,21.8) vs 18.6(17.0,20.1) pmol/l, p = 0.026], serum T4/T3 ratios [62.5 (55.7, 66.2) vs 59.4 (53.4, 64.9), p = 0.029], FF fT4 levels [19.0(17.5,21.3) vs 18.1(16.8,19.9) pmol/l, p = 0.009] and FF T4/T3 ratios [52.6 (46.4, 57.3) vs 50.0 (43.7, 53.1), p = 0.004] were significantly higher in the successful pregnancy group than the implantation failure group. (3) Spearman's rank correlation analysis revealed positive associations of both the FF T4/T3 ratio and serum TSH levels with the numbers of retrieved oocytes (total or MII) and embryos (fertilized, cleavage, and good quality). CONCLUSIONS: TH levels in FF are strongly correlated with those in serum on the HCG day, and THs on the HCG day may affect ART outcomes.

Background: Accumulating evidence shows that circular RNAs (circRNAs) plays vital roles in tumor progression. However, the biological functions of circRNAs in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) metastasis is still unclear. Methods: qRT-PCR was used to detect circFLNA, miRNAs and FLNA mRNA expression. Transwell assay and western blot were performed to evaluate cell migration ability and to detect FLNA, MMP2 and MLK1 protein expression, respectively. RNA pull-down analysis was used to find the binding-miRNAs of circFLNA. Luciferase reporter assay was used to examine the effect of circFLNA on miRNAs and miR-486-3p on FLNA expression. Results: In this study, we confirmed that a Filamin A (FLNA)-derived hsa_circ_0092012 known as circFLNA, was upregulated in LSCC, and the higher expression of circFLNA was correlated with LSCC lymph node metastasis. Increased circFLNA facilitates LSCC cell migration ability through upregulating FLNA and MMP2 protein expression. Mechanistically, we find that circFLNA sponges miR-486-3p in LSCC cells, relieving miR-486-3p-induced repression of FLNA which promotes LSCC cell migration. Accordingly, FLNA mRNA is overexpressed in LSCC tissues and a higher FLNA level is correlated with poor survival. Dysregulation of the circFLNA/miR-486-3p/FLNA regulatory pathway contributes to LSCC migration. Conclusions: In summary, our study sheds light on the regulatory mechanism of circFLNA in LSCC migration via sponging miR-486-3p, which downregulates the FLNA protein expression. Targeting circFLNA/miR-486-3p/FLAN axis provides a potential therapeutic target for aggressive LSCC.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to investigate whether pre-therapeutic radiomic features based on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can predict the clinical response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) in patients with locally advanced cervical cancer (LACC). METHODS: A total of 275 patients with LACC receiving NACT were enrolled in this study from eight hospitals, and allocated to training and testing sets (2:1 ratio). Three radiomic feature sets were extracted from the intratumoural region of T1-weighted images, intratumoural region of T2-weighted images, and peritumoural region of T2-weighted images before NACT for each patient. With a feature selection strategy, three single sequence radiomic models were constructed, and three additional combined models were constructed by combining the features of different regions or sequences. The performance of all models was assessed using receiver operating characteristic curve. FINDINGS: The combined model of the intratumoural zone of T1-weighted images, intratumoural zone of T2-weighted images,and peritumoural zone of T2-weighted images achieved an AUC of 0.998 in training set and 0.999 in testing set, which was significantly better (p < .05) than the other radiomic models. Moreover, no significant variation in performance was found if different training sets were used. INTERPRETATION: This study demonstrated that MRI-based radiomic features hold potential in the pretreatment prediction of response to NACT in LACC, which could be used to identify rightful patients for receiving NACT avoiding unnecessary treatment.

OBJECTIVE: Radiogenomics investigates radiographic imaging phenotypes associated with gene expression patterns. This study aims to explore relationships between CT imaging radiomics features and gene expression data in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). METHODS: Eighty-nine NSCLC patients are included in the study. Radiomics features are extracted and selected to quantify the phenotype of tumors on CT-scans. Co-expressed genes are also clustered and the first principal component of the cluster is represented, which is defined as a metagene. Then, statistical analysis was performed to assess association of CT radiomics features with metagenes. In addition, predictive models are built and metagene enrichment are conducted to further evaluate performance of NSCLC radiogenomics statistically and biologically. RESULTS: There are 187 significant pairwise correlations between a CT radiomics feature and a metagene of NSCLC, where eighteen metagenes are annotated with Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) terms. Metagenes are predicted in terms of radiomics features with an accuracy of 41.89% -89.93%. CONCLUSIONS: This study reveals the associations between CT imaging radiomics features and NSCLC co-expressed gene sets. The findings suggest that CT radiomics features can reflect important biological information of NSCLC patients, which may have a significant clinical impact as CT is routinely used in clinical practice, assisting in improving medical decision-support at low cost.

N/O self-doped hollow carbon nanorods (HCNs) with micro/mesoporous walls are fabricated based on a new deep-eutectic-solvent that serves as an all-in-one precursor, self-template, and self-dopant agent. The carbon-based supercapacitor using an ionic liquid electrolyte exhibits a high energy density of 116.5 W h kg-1 with excellent long-term cycling performance.

Taking Zn-Fe bimetallic organic-framework as both template and precursor, and furfuryl alcohol (FA) as secondary carbon source, a high-surface-area magnetic nanoporous carbon (MNPC) material was successful prepared. The MNPC exhibits excellent adsorption performance for bisphenol analogs (BPs). The maximum adsorption capacity achieved 439.0 mg g-1 for bisphenol AF, 423.7 mg g-1 for bisphenol S, 330.4 mg g-1 for tetrabromobisphenol A and 252.5 mg g-1 for bisphenol A. A sensitive magnetic solid-phase extraction with MNPC as adsorbent coupled with HPLC-UV analytical method was developed for the detection of trace BPs. The limits of detection for BPs were as low as 0.03-0.07 ng mg-1 with the RSDs of less than 4.6%. This method was applied to detection of four BPs in environmental water samples and the satisfactory results were obtained.

n-Octadecylamine was adopted as a cleanup agent to develop a novel solidification of a switchable solvent-based QuEChERS method. At higher temperatures (such as 55 °C), n-octadecylamine can melt into a liquid, allowing effective extraction of matrix interferences in acetonitrile solution (i.e., in dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction). At lower temperatures, n-octadecylamine carrying matrix interferences can rapidly solidify and easily separate from the acetonitrile solution. The results demonstrated that n-octadecylamine possessed a better ability to remove matrix interferences and reduce matrix effects than those of traditional solid-phase dispersive extraction cleanup agents of primary secondary amine and octadecyl bonded silica gel. By coupling it with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, the proposed method was applied to the detection of 16 pesticides in cucumber. The recoveries were from 80.9 to 112.6% with relative standard deviations less than 12.9%. Satisfactory results were also obtained for the detection of 16 pesticides in pear, orange, apple, pepper, lettuce, and tomato.

Lysozyme is widely used in medical, food and industrial fields due to its bacteriolytic effect and thus it is significant to design and develop a specific adsorbent with high adsorption capacity and selectivity for lysozyme. Inspired by the high uptake capacity of tetrafluoroterephthalonitrile-crosslinked porous ß-cyclodextrin polymers (P-CDPs) and the noncovalent interaction between lysozyme and carboxyl groups, the carboxyl-functionalized P-CDPs (P-CDP-COO-) were synthesized by base-catalysed hydrolysis of nitrile group in P-CDPs to carboxyl. Porous structure, large extent of carboxylic functional groups, cyclodextrin's preventing aggregation, and negatively charged make P-CDP-COO- possess an outstanding adsorption capability for lysozyme. The maximum saturated adsorption capacity reaches 1520 mg g-1, which is much better than the parent polymer and other reported materials. The as-prepared material was successfully utilized for the selective extraction of lysozyme from egg white.

Augmentation rhinoplasty is one of the most common plastic surgery procedures performed in Asia. Most Asian patients desire not only a natural-looking nose but also a nose with natural feel. Achieving such rhinoplasty outcomes with grafts has been a challenge for surgeons due to rigidity of grafting material. We propose a novel technique to address this limitation. A total of 200 healthy adult patients aged from 18 to 25 years were randomly chosen and classified into 5 groups: A, B, C, D, and control. Each group included 40 patients. The patients assigned to conventional grafting underwent rhinoplasty with L-shaped silicone prosthesis (group A) or expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (e-PTFE; group B), using traditional carving methods. The patients assigned to dynamic rhinoplasty underwent silicone (group C) or e-PTFE grafts (group D) using the modified double "V" method, which involves removing bilateral wedges from the graft to decrease rigidity. Patients in control group do not undergo the surgery. A 3-dimensional raster surface scanner was used to capture the images of the patients accurately and nasal mobility was measured. Subjective evaluations were carried out by a series of questionnaires asked to the patients. The angle α of nasal mobility was significantly lower in conventional grafting (23.09 [5.34] mm for silicone and 17.88 [4.96] mm for e-PTFE) versus the "V" carving (30.53 [3.76] mm for silicone and 23.77 [4.53] mm for e-PTFE; P < .05). The double "V" carving method is a simple, effective, and practical method for improving dynamic nasal outcomes in patient undergoing augmentation rhinoplasty.

Safety concerns are impeding the applications of lithium metal batteries. Flame-retardant electrolytes, such as organic phosphates electrolytes (OPEs), could intrinsically eliminate fire hazards and improve battery safety. However, OPEs show poor compatibility with Li metal though the exact reason has yet to be identified. Here, the lithium plating process in OPEs and Li/OPEs interface chemistry were investigated through ex situ and in situ techniques, and the cause for this incompatibility was revealed to be the highly resistive and inhomogeneous interfaces. Further, a nitriding interface strategy was proposed to ameliorate this issue and a Li metal anode with an improved Li cycling stability (300 h) and dendrite-free morphology is achieved. Meanwhile, the full batteries coupled with nickel-rich cathodes, such as LiNi0.8 Co0.1 Mn0.1 O2 , show excellent cycling stability and outstanding safety (passed the nail penetration test). This successful nitriding-interface strategy paves a new way to handle the incompatibility between electrode and electrolyte.

OBJECTIVE: To present the distribution of neurovascular and lymphatic vessels in uterine ligaments using 3D models based on the pathological staining of serial 2D sections of postoperative specimens. METHODS: Serial transverse sections of fresh uterine ligaments from a patient with stage IB1 cervical squamous cell carcinoma were studied using the computer-assisted anatomic dissection (CAAD) technique. The sections were stained with hematoxylin and eosin, Weigert elastic fibers, D2-40 and immunostainings (sheep anti-tyrosine hydroxylase and rabbit anti-vasoactive intestinal peptide). The sections were then digitalized, registered and reconstructed three-dimensionally. Then, the 3D models were analyzed and measured. RESULTS: The 3D models of the neurovascular and lymphatic vessels in uterine ligaments were created, depicting their precise location and distribution. The vessels were primarily located in the upper part of the ligaments model, while the pelvic autonomic nerves were primarily in the lower part; the lymphatic vessels were scattered in the uterine ligaments, without obvious regularity. CONCLUSION: CAAD is an effective anatomical method to study the precise distribution of neurovascular and lymphatic vessels in uterine ligaments. It can present detailed anatomical information about female pelvic autonomic innervation and the spatial relationship between nerves and vessels and may provide a better understanding of nerve-sparing radical hysterectomy.

RESUMO

We report on a non-contact method for external right-angle measurement using two autocollimators. A precise mathematical model is deduced to evaluate and deduct the measuring error. The values measured with our method are very coincident compared with the results measured by a ZYGO interferometer. The measuring accuracy is superior to 0.1 arcsec for the right-angle errors within 3.0 arcsec and becomes 0.4 arcsec for the extended right-angle errors within 8.0 arcsec. This method can be widely used in situations for external right-angle measurement, such as angle measurement for the body of torsion balance and test mass in spaceborne laser interferometry.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) on improving the cognitive function in minor depression (MiD) and major depression (MaD). The study will constitute a placebo-controlled single-blind parallel-group randomized controlled trial. The selected participants will be randomly allocated into one of two parallel groups with a 1:1 ratio: the CBT-based group and the general health education group. CBT significantly alleviated depressive symptoms of MiD and MaD at 12 weeks (p < 0.001), and the treatment effect was maintained for at least 12 months (p < 0.001). Interestingly, CBT significantly promotes more cognitive function of MiD and partial cognitive function of MaD at 12 weeks in the intervention group than in the control group (p < 0.01). CBT can alleviate depressive symptoms of both minor and MaDs. The effectiveness of CBT is different on improving the cognitive function in MiD and MaD.
