RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The 2019-2020 American Academy of Nursing (Academy, 2019) policy priorities document states that "they have a clear and distinct focus on social determinants of health and uses this lens to advance policies and solutions within each of the three overarching priorities" PURPOSE: This consensus paper seeks to establish conceptual clarity and consensus for what social determinants of health mean for nursing, with emphasis on examples of health policies that advance planetary health equity and improve planetary health-related quality of life. METHODS: Volunteers from five Expert Panels of the Academy met via videoconference to determine roles and refine the focus of the paper. After the initial discussion, the first draft of the conceptual framework was written by the first three authors of the paper and, after discussion via videoconference with all the co-authors, successive drafts were developed and circulated for feedback. Consensus was reached when all authors indicated acceptance of what became the final version of the conceptual framework. DISCUSSION: A conceptual framework was developed that describes how the social determinants of health can be addressed through nursing roles and actions at the individual, family, and population levels with a particular focus on the role of health policy. The paper provides a specific health policy example for each of the six key areas of the social determinants of health to illustrate how nurses can act to improve population health. CONCLUSION: Nursing actions can support timely health policy changes that focus on upstream factors in the six key areas of the social determinants of health and thus improve population health. The urgent need to eliminate systematic and structural racism must be central to such policy change if equity in planetary health-related quality of life is to be attained.

RESUMO

The purpose of this essay is to present a discussion of various perspectives of power. The essay includes dictionary definitions of power and descriptions of power within the context of a nursing conceptual model, nursing theories of power, and medicalization of patient care. Noteworthy is that some perspectives highlight the contrast between a negative, control-based approach and a positive approach that rejects control of or over anyone.

RESUMO

The purpose of this essay is to explore the meanings of the widely used terms compliance and adherence and the less widely used term concordance and to raise questions about the appropriateness of these terms when used to describe individuals' or groups' health-related behaviors. Discussion focuses on how recognition of how the meanings of these terms has uncovered the failure to honor nursing's emphasis on person/patient-centered care due to power imbalances between healthcare providers and patents and the subsequent lack of patient autonomy. Consideration of these problems with existing terms could facilitate identification of a potentially more appropriate term based on the language of a nursing conceptual model and/or theory.

RESUMO

This article aimed at describing the development of a theory of the experience of living with cancer. Secondary analysis of data from a series of studies yielded the concepts and propositions of the theory of the omnipresence of cancer. Theory construction was guided by Heidegger's ontology of dasein, whereas Newman's grand theory of health as expanding consciousness guided theory evolution. The theory includes 4 concepts-influencing factors, toward authentic dasein, mapping out the future, and living with cancer-each of which has several dimensions. Based on this theory, nursing interventions can be developed and tested to support persons with cancer.

RESUMO

The purpose of this essay is to outline two strategies that can be used to increase recognition of nursing excellence-in research, education, and practice. The first strategy is to gain recognition for excellence in nursing in and beyond universities, to collaborate with members of other disciplines, and to publicize what we study and what we teach. The second strategy is to gain recognition for excellence in nursing in and beyond clinical agencies, to publicize what we do when interacting with people who seek our services, and to implement the standards of the Pathway to Excellence Program® and/or the Magnet Recognition Program®.

RESUMO

Cancer is a major cause of mortality and morbidity in Korea. However, there has been no previous nursing literature review on the phenomenon of resilience among cancer patients in Korea. The purpose of this study was to identify information about theories, instruments, correlates, and outcomes of resilience in the cancer experiences of Korean adults. This was a scoping review that searched Ovid MEDLINE, CINAHL, Google Scholar, DBpia, and the Korean Studies Information Service System between 2000 and 2016 in order to identify English and Korean research reports. The review yielded 17 quantitative studies, including 2 resilience theories and 6 resilience-specific instruments. The factors self-efficacy, hope, social supports, self-esteem, anxiety, and depression were associated with resilience, regardless of the type of cancer. Quality of life and coping were commonly investigated outcome variables for resilience. This review suggests that a nursing theory reflecting Korean culture and qualitative research concerning the phenomenon of resilience should be conducted as research priorities as the foundation for developing culturally appropriate tools for resilience. This will lead to enhanced quality of life among Korean cancer patients, which is the core of palliative nursing care.

RESUMO

This essay is the second of two essays about the use of a conceptual model to guide scoping reviews of literature. The first essay, published in the previous issue of Nursing Science Quarterly, provided examples of the use of the conceptual model of nursing and population health as a starting point for the construction of conceptual-theoretical-empirical structures for scoping reviews. In this essay, the examples are of the use of the conceptual model of nursing and health policy.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT The purpose of this paper is to present a discussion of a preliminary situation-specific theory of adaptation to high-risk childbearing for expectant and new mothers and fathers. Roy's Adaptation Model guided the design and conduct of the pilot study of correlates of maternal and paternal functional status from which the theory was derived. The conceptual-theoretical-empirical structure for the study is displayed in a diagram. The concepts of the theory-functional status, physical symptoms, physical energy, psychological symptoms, and relationship quality--are identified and defined, and their linkages are identified. Implications for testing and potential use of the theory in nursing practice are discussed.

This essay extends discussion of the ways in which a conceptual model of nursing can guide literature reviews. Emphasis is placed on ways in which the conceptual model of nursing and population health was used to guide and/or categorize the results of scoping reviews of the literature. Examples are presented in the form of diagrams and narrative explanations of the resultant conceptual-theoretical-empirical structures.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The purpose of this paper is to present a Neuman Systems Model-guided discussion of current knowledge associated with covert incivility in the nursing academic workplace. ORGANIZING STRUCTURE: The Neuman Systems Model provides a multiple discipline, systems perspective of the stressor covert incivility and levels of prevention interventions to counter it. FINDINGS: Covert incivility is defined as a stressor that affects individual, group, community, and social systems' intrapersonal, interpersonal, and extrapersonal levels of function. Two prominent examples of expressing covert incivility in academic settings are identified-pluralistic ignorance and passive aggression. CONCLUSIONS: The Neuman Systems Model can guide development and testing of primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention interventions targeted to covert incivility in the nursing academic workplace, as well as outcomes of the interventions. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The Neuman Systems Model is a useful multiple discipline conceptual model for identification and testing of the effects of covert incivility in the nursing academic workplace.
