RESUMO

Objective: To determine the best time for conducting cesarean section for the establishment of an animal model of lung development with specific pathogen free (SPF) preterm Bama minipigs under the condition of not making medical interventions such as hyperoxia, mechanical ventilation, or medication. Methods: SPF Bama sows at gestational day (GD) 113, GD107, GD104, GD101, and GD98 were selected and cesarean sections were performed. Then, the viability of the preterm piglets were observed. Based on their general data, viability, and paraffin sections stained with hematoxylin and eosin, the best time for performing cesarean section in order to build a SPF preterm pig model of lung development was determined. Results: Cesarean sections were performed on a total of 7 sows and 55 piglets were delivered, among which 25 were still alive 3 hours after delivery. Seven piglets of GD104 and all piglets of GD107 and GD113 survived, while piglets of GD98 and GD101 all died. The survival rate of piglets of GD104 was 33.33% (7/21). Piglets of GD98 already possessed fully developed physical appearance and lung shape. Piglets from GD104 had better lung expansion and higher density of thin-walled alveoli. The lungs of GD107 piglets were basically fully expanded, and the density of thin-walled alveoli was almost the same as that of normal full-term piglets. Conclusions: Findings of this study suggest that SPF preterm piglets of GD104 with no specific pathogen exposure and no medical intervention can be used to establish a SPF preterm pig model of lung development.

RESUMO

Native extracellular matrix (ECM) exhibits dynamic change in the ligand position. Herein, the ECM-emulating control and real-time monitoring of stem cell differentiation are demonstrated by ligand nanoassembly. The density of gold nanoassembly presenting cell-adhesive Arg-Gly-Asp (RGD) ligand on Fe3 O4 (magnetite) nanoparticle in nanostructures flexibly grafted to material is changed while keeping macroscale ligand density invariant. The ligand nanoassembly on the Fe3 O4 can be magnetically attracted to mediate rising and falling ligand movements via linker stretching and compression, respectively. High ligand nanoassembly density stimulates integrin ligation to activate the mechanosensing-assisted stem cell differentiation, which is monitored via in situ real-time electrochemical sensing. Magnetic control of rising and falling ligand movements hinders and promotes the adhesion-mediated mechanotransduction and differentiation of stem cells, respectively. These rising and falling ligand states yield the difference in the farthest distance (≈34.6 nm) of the RGD from material surface, thereby dynamically mimicking static long and short flexible linkers, which hinder and promote cell adhesion, respectively. Design of cytocompatible ligand nanoassemblies can be made with combinations of dimensions, shapes, and biomimetic ligands for remotely regulating stem cells for offering novel methodologies to advance regenerative therapies.

RESUMO

Ecosystem degradation and biodiversity loss have been caused by economic booms in developing countries over recent decades. In response, ecosystem restoration projects have been advanced in some countries but the effectiveness of different approaches and indicators at large spatio-temporal scales (i.e., whole catchments) remains poorly understood. This study assessed the effectiveness of a diverse array of 440 aquatic restoration projects including wastewater treatment, constructed wetlands, plant/algae salvage and dredging of contaminated sediments implemented and maintained from 2007 to 2017 across more than 2000 km2 of the northwest Taihu basin (Yixing, China). Synchronized investigations of water quality and invertebrate communities were conducted before and after restoration. Our analysis showed that even though there was rapid urbanization at this time, nutrient concentrations (NH4+-N, TN, TP) and biological indices of benthic invertebrate (taxonomic richness, Shannon diversity, sensitive taxon density) improved significantly across most of the study area. Improvements were associated with the type of restoration project, with projects targeting pollution-sources leading to the clearest ecosystem responses compared with those remediating pollution sinks. However, in some locations, the recovery of biotic communities appears to lag behind nutrients (e.g., nitrogen and phosphorus), likely reflecting long-distance re-colonization routes for invertebrates given the level of pre-restoration degradation of the catchment. Overall, the study suggests that ecological damage caused by recent rapid economic development in China could potentially be mitigated by massive restoration investments synchronized across whole catchments, although these effects could be expected to be enhanced if urbanization rates were reduced at the same time.

RESUMO

Phthalates are non-persistent chemicals used in products of daily necessities. The evidence on the relationship of prenatal phthalates exposure and preterm birth remain uncertain and dimed. We Searched Cochrane, EMBASE, PubMed and Qvid Medline and selected studies according to a priori defined inclusion criteria. A total of 20 relevant studies published before March 31, 2020, were included. The main methods to detect heterogeneity and publication bias of included studies were the Q-statistic and Begg's test. Overall summary estimates indicated positive association of prenatal exposure to di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate [number of studies (n) = 11, odds ratio (OR) = 1.1; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.89, 1.4], diethyl phthalate [n = 11, OR = 1.1; 95% CI: 0.92, 1.3], dibutyl phthalate [n = 10, OR = 1.1; 95% CI: 0.77, 1.4], butyl benzyl phthalate [n = 10, OR = 1.0; 95% CI: 0.91, 1.2], diisobutyl phthalate [n = 9, OR = 1.1; 95% CI: 0.92, 1.3], diisononyl phthalate [n = 4, OR = 1.1; 95% CI: 0.85, 1.3], and phthalates were negatively associated with gestational age except di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate and diisononyl phthalate. Most of them were not statistically significant. Subgroup analysis indicated that the heterogeneity was mainly found in the studies conducted in China and matrix collected at first trimester of pregnancy. Substantial heterogeneity and inconsistency of research methods may lead to inconsistent results of maternal phthalates exposure with preterm birth. We recommend a multicenter cohort study with a consistent approach to unravel the complex associations of prenatal phthalates exposure with birth outcomes.

RESUMO

The fault diagnosis of early failure bearing can discover the potential danger in the mechanical equipment in time. It remains a great challenge due to the noise interference. Although many diagnosis methods have been proposed, the characteristics of signal have not yet been fully investigated, which leads to unsatisfactory diagnosis results. To solve this problem, a weak fault detection method with a two-stage key frequency focusing model is designed. Translation invariance in time domain and translation variance in frequency domain are systematically considered. The effectiveness is verified on four constructed datasets. The results show that the designed network has the best comprehensive performance comparing to the state-of-the-art methods.

RESUMO

The NITRATE TRANSPORTER 1/PEPTIDE TRANSPORTER FAMILY (NPF) genes, initially characterized as nitrate or peptide transporters in plants, are involved in the transport of a large variety of substrates, including amino acids, nitrate, auxin (IAA), jasmonates (JAs), abscisic acid (ABA) and gibberellins (GAs) and glucosinolates. A total of 169 potential functional NPF genes were excavated in Brassica napus, and they showed diversified expression patterns in 90 different organs or tissues based on transcriptome profile data. The complex time-serial expression changes were found for most functional NPF genes in the development process of leaves, silique walls and seeds, which indicated that the expression of Brassica napus NPF (BnaNPF) genes may respond to altered phytohormone and secondary metabolite content through combining with promoter element enrichment analysis. Furthermore, many BnaNPF genes were detected to respond to vernalization with two different patterns, and 20 BnaNPF genes responded to nitrate deficiency. These results will provide useful information for further investigation of the biological function of BnaNPF genes for growth and development in rapeseed.

RESUMO

The development of selective catalytic reactions that utilize easily available reagents for the efficient synthesis of alcohols is a long-standing goal of chemical research. Here an intriguing strategy for the chemodivergent copper-catalyzed hydroxymethylation of alkynes with formic acid and hydrosilane has been developed. By simply tuning the amount of formic acid and reaction temperature, distinct one-carbon-extended primary alcohols, that is, allylic alcohols and ß-branched alkyl alcohols, were produced with high levels of Z/E-, regio-, and enantioselectivity.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Forkhead box protein M1 (FOXM1) is an oncogene regulating tumor growth and metastasis. Exosome was suggested to mediate cell communication by delivering active molecules in cancers. However, the existence of FOXM1 in circulating exosomes and the role of exosome FOXM1 in gastric cancer (GC) were not clear. This study aims to investigate the potential role of FOXM1 related long noncoding RNA (FRLnc1) in exosomes in GC. RESULTS: The prepared CD63 immunomagnetic beads (CD63-IMB) had the characteristics of good dispersity and high magnetic response. The isolated exosomes were presented with elliptical membranous particles under a transmission electron microscope (TEM), with the particle size of 89.78 ± 4.8 nm. Western blot (WB) results showed that the exosomes were rich in CD9 and CD81. The Dil-labeled exosomes were distributed around cytoplasm and nucleus of cells by imaging flow cytometry (IFC) analysis. The results of quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) revealed that the FRLnc1 expressions were up-regulated in GC cells, tumor tissues, and serum of GC patients. An obviously up-regulated FRLnc1 expression was found in serum exosomes of GC patients. Up-regulation of FRLnc1 expression was closely correlated to lymph node metastasis (LNM) and TNM stage with the combination of relevant clinicopathological parameter analysis. The in vitro functional analyses demonstrated that FRLnc1 knockdown by RNA interference suppressed cell proliferation and migration in HGC-27 cells, whereas FRLnc1 overexpression promoted cell proliferation and migration in MKN45 cells. After exosome treatment, the FRLnc1 expression was significantly increased in MKN45 cells, and the MKN45 cells showed increased ability of proliferation and migration. CONCLUSION: GC cells-derived exosomes played roles in promoting the growth and metastasis of GC by transporting FRLnc1, suggesting that FRLnc1 in the exosomes may be a potential biomarker for the diagnosis and treatment of GC. The delivery of FRLnc1 by the exosomes may provide a new way for the treatment of GC. Trial registration 2020-KYSB-094. Registered 23 March 2020-Retrospectively registered.

RESUMO

Background: There is no doubt that thyroid dysfunction is associated with psychiatric disorders. A large amount of thyroid carcinoma patients displayed mood disorders after the withdrawal of levothyroxine (LT4). However, it is unclear whether the disorders are related to the transient withdrawal of LT4, and if yes, what the possible underlying mechanism is. This study aims to investigate the abnormal regional cerebral glucose metabolism (rCMRglu) in a group of papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) patients without LT4 for 4 weeks and prove the relationship between the abnormal rCMRglu with depression and anxiety. Methods: Brain 18F-FDG PET/CT data of 38 consecutive PTC patients with high/intermediate-risk from June 2016 to December 2017 have been analyzed. Of the 38 patients, 23 are in the LT4 withdrawal group (WG) and 15 in the LT4 replacement group (RG). These patients were also evaluated for depressive and anxiety symptoms within 24 h after the scans based on the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (17 items, HRDS-17) and the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAMA) respectively. Results: Thirty-eight patients (12 men, 26 women; age range, 25-69 years; mean age, 45.8 years) were selected in the study. Compared with the RG, patients in WG showed depression and anxiety with higher total scores of HRDS-17 and HAMA (14.7 ± 5.8 vs 3.8 ± 5.5, t = -5.74, p = 0.00; 9.3 ± 4.3 vs 2.7 ± 4.1, t = -4.74, p = 0.00, respectively). In the brain glucose metabolism analysis, the WG patients showed lower rCMRglu in Occipital_Mid_R and Postcentral_L. On the other hand, data illustrated significant rCMRglu increases in the Frontal_Sup_Orb_L. Compared with the healthy group (HG), the rCMRglu of the Postcentral_L and Precuneus_L showed hypoactivity, but the Hippocampus_R and the Temporal_Inf_L showed hyperactivity. This analysis yielded a significant correlation between abnormal rCMRglu with the free thyroxine level, the serum thyroid-stimulating hormone level, HRDS-17, and HAMA scores. Conclusions: The findings showed that more PTC patients exhibited depression and anxiety after LT4 withdrawal for 4 weeks. More attention should be paid to these hypothyroid patients while they were in the hospital. Such a short-term LT4 withdrawal also likely induced abnormal rCMRglu. Our study attempts to explain the possible mechanism of mood disorders related to transient hypothyroidism.

RESUMO

Tibetan sheep is one of primitive Chinese sheep breeds, which achieved the divergence about 2500 years ago in Qinghai plateau region. According to different geographic conditions, especially altitudes, Tibetan sheep evolved into different breeds. In this study, we performed whole genome resequencing of 5 representative Tibetan sheep breeds. Comparative genomic analysis showed that they can be divided into different clades with a close genetic relationship. However, some genes with common selective regions were enriched for hypoxic adaptability in different breeds living at higher altitude, including GHR, BMP15, and CPLANE1. Furthermore, breed-specific selective regions about physical characteristics, especially wool growth, were found in genes such as BSND, USP24, NCAPG, and LCORL. This study could contribute to our understanding about trait formation and offer a reference for breeding of Tibetan sheep.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To deeply understand the clinical manifestation, laboratory examination characteristics, diagnosis and treatment of an eight p11 myeloproliferative syndrome (EMS) with rare phenotypes. METHODS: The clinical and laboratory characteristics and the process of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) were summarized in 1 rare EMS case involving T/B/myeloid cells. Meanwhile, 2 similar cases in the previous literature were also discussed. RESULTS: The bone marrow examination indicated that the patient with B-cell acute lymphocytic leukemia. The lymph node biopsy showed that the patient was T lymphoblastic/myeloid lymphoma. The 8p11 abnormality was found by the examination of bone marrow chromosomes. The RT-PCR examination showed that the BCR-ABL fused gene was negtive. The FGFR1 breakage was found by using the FISH with FGFR1 probe in lymph node. The Mutation of FMNL3, NBPF1 and RUNX1 genes was found by using the whole exome sequencing. The patient received allo-HSCT under CR2. By the follow-up till to September 2019, the patient survived without the above-mentioned disease. CONCLUSION: EMS manifest as neoplasms involving T-lineage, B-lineage, and myeloid-lineage simultaneously is extremely rare. Although the FGFR1 gene-targeted therapy can be conducted, allo-HSCT should be actively considered.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a relatively complex and disabling illness with a substantial economic burden and functional impairment. Until now, many CFS patients lack appropriate healthcare. Acupoint catgut embedding is an effective and emerging alternative therapy for CFE. With this research, we endeavor to investigate the effect and safety of ACE for CFS. METHODS: Eight databases will be searched from inception to December 2020: PubMed, EMBASE, The Cochrane Library, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, Chong-Qing VIP database, and Wan-fang database. We regard studies as eligible for inclusion if they were RCTs done in CFS patients, compare acupoint catgut embedding to another treatment strategy, and report fatigue changes at the end of the intervention period. Two independent reviewers complete the study selection, data extraction, and the risk of bias assessment. We assess pooled data using a random-effects model through Revman software (v.5.3) and Stata (version 15.0). ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: Ethics approval is not required because the individual patient data will not be involved, with no privacy concerns. This systematic review and meta-analysis will provide a reference for CFS patients and clinicians on the non-drug interventions. We will publish and disseminate the results of this review in a peer-reviewed journal or relevant conference. OSF REGISTRATION NUMBER: 10.17605/OSF.IO/7SHD9 (https://osf.io/7shd9).

RESUMO

Late-onset multiple acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency (MADD) is the most common form of lipid storage myopathy. The disease is mainly caused by mutations in electron-transfer flavoprotein dehydrogenase gene (ETFDH), which leads to decreased levels of ETF:QO in skeletal muscle. However, the specific underlying mechanisms triggering such degradation remain unknown. We constructed expression plasmids containing wild type ETF:QO and mutants ETF:QO-A84T, R175H, A215T, Y333C, and cultured patient-derived fibroblasts containing the following mutations in ETFDH: c.250G>A (p.A84T), c.998A>G (p.Y333C), c.770A>G (p.Y257C), c.1254_1257delAACT (p. L418TfsX10), c.524G>A (p.R175H), c.380T>A (p.L127P), and c.892C>T (p.P298S). We used in vitro expression systems and patient-derived fibroblasts to detect stability of ETF:QO mutants then evaluated their interaction with Hsp70 interacting protein CHIP with active/inactive ubiquitin E3 ligase carboxyl terminus using western blot and immunofluorescence staining. This interaction was confirmed in vitro and in vivo by co-immunoprecipitation and immunofluorescence staining. We confirmed the existence two ubiquitination sites in mutant ETF:QO using mass spectrometry (MS) analysis. We found that mutant ETF:QO proteins were unstable and easily degraded in patient fibroblasts and in vitro expression systems by ubiquitin-proteasome pathway, and identified the specific ubiquitin E3 ligase as CHIP, which forms complex to control mutant ETF:QO degradation through poly-ubiquitination. CHIP-dependent degradation of mutant ETF:QO proteins was confirmed by MS and site-directed mutagenesis of ubiquitination sites. Hsp70 is directly involved in this process as molecular chaperone of CHIP. CHIP plays an important role in ubiquitin-proteasome pathway dependent degradation of mutant ETF:QO by working as a chaperone-assisted E3 ligase, which reveals CHIP's potential role in pathological mechanisms of late-onset MADD.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate and compare the functional outcomes after arthroscopic repair of bursal-sided versus articular-sided partial-thickness rotator cuff tears. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of patients who had undergone arthroscopic tear completion and subsequent repair of symptomatic partial-thickness rotator cuff tears in a single institution from 2010 to 2015. Range of motion (ROM) (forward flexion and abduction), the pain score as measured on the Numeric Pain Rating Scale, and outcome scores (Constant-Murley score, University of California, Los Angeles shoulder score, and Oxford Shoulder Score) were calculated preoperatively and at 1 year and 2 years postoperatively. The delta difference was calculated for each outcome parameter at the respective follow-up points as the difference from the preoperative baseline score. RESULTS: A total of 104 patients were included. All tears involved the supraspinatus tendon and did not exceed 2 cm. Of the patients, 65 had an articular-sided tear (AST) whereas 39 had a bursal-sided tear (BST). The mean age of the patients was 53.4 years in the AST group and 55.8 years in the BST group. The AST and BST groups did not differ preoperatively in terms of age, sex, and the measured outcome parameters. Postoperatively, the patients in both groups achieved statistically significant improvement in pain relief and functional outcomes at 2 years. No statistically significant difference was observed between the 2 groups in terms of the delta-difference outcomes in ROM in forward flexion (P = .781) or abduction (P = .348), pain score (P = .187), Constant-Murley score (P = .186), University of California, Los Angeles shoulder score (P = .911), and Oxford Shoulder Score (P = .186) at 2 years. CONCLUSIONS: Partial-thickness rotator cuff tears treated with arthroscopic tear completion and subsequent repair achieved good outcomes in terms of ROM, functional outcomes, and pain relief at 2 years. There was no difference in outcomes regardless of whether the location of the tear was articular sided or bursal sided. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level III, retrospective comparative study.

RESUMO

This work represents the first [4+2] annulation of hydroxamic acids with olefins for the synthesis of benzo[c][1,2]oxazines scaffold via anode-selective electrochemical oxidation. This protocol features mild conditions, is oxidant free, shows high regioselectivity and stereoselectivity, broad substrate scope of both alkenes and hydroxamic acids, and is compatible with terpenes, peptides, and steroids. Significantly, the dioxygenation of olefins employing hydroxamic acid is also successfully achieved by switching the anode material under the same reaction conditions. The study not only reveals a new reactivity of hydroxamic acids and its first application in electrosynthesis but also provides a successful example of anode material-tuned product selectivity.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To study the percentage of the measured values of the main pulmonary ventilation function parameters in their predicted values based on Zapletal equation among healthy children aged 5-14 years in Kunming, China, and to provide a basis for accurate judgment of pulmonary ventilation function in clinical practice. METHODS: A total of 702 healthy children aged 5-14 years (352 boys and 350 girls) from Kunming were enrolled. The Jaeger spirometer was used to measure the nine indices:forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), ratio of forced expiratory volume in one second to forced vital capacity (FEV1/FVC), maximal mid-expiratory flow (MMEF), forced expiratory flow at 25% of forced vital capacity (FEF25), forced expiratory flow at 50% of forced vital capacity (FEF50), forced expiratory flow at 75% of forced vital capacity (FEF75), peak expiratory flow (PEF), and maximal voluntary ventilation (MVV). The values obtained from the Zapletal equation of predicted values provided by the spirometer were used as the predicted values of children, and the percentage of measured values in predicted values was calculated. RESULTS: In the 702 children, the percentages of the measured values of the main pulmonary ventilation function parameters PEF, FVC, FEV1, FEV1/FVC, and MVV in their predicted values fluctuated from 102% to 114%, 94% to 108%, 98% to 113%, 98% to 107%, and 141% to 183% respectively. As for the main airway velocity parameters, the percentages of the measured values of FEF25, FEF50, FEF75, and MMEF in their predicted values fluctuated from 98% to 116%, 85% to 102%, 71% to 98%, and 83% to 100% respectively. The percentages of the measured values of PEF, FVC, FEV1, FEV1/FVC, MVV, FEF25, FEF50, FEF75, and MMEF in their predicted values had the lower limits of normal of 88.2%, 88.4%, 92.0%, 94.4%, 118.5%, 82.9%, 70.0%, 62.1%, and 70.1% respectively. CONCLUSIONS: There are differences between pulmonary ventilation function parameter levels and normal values provided by Zapletal equation in healthy children aged 5-14 years in Kunming. As for the pulmonary ventilation function parameters of PEF, FVC, FEV, FEV1/FVC, MVV, FEF25, FEF50, FEF75, and MMEF in these children, the lower limits of normal of measured values in predicted values may be determined as 88.2%, 88.4%, 92.0%, 94.4%, 118.5%, 82.9%, 70.0%, 62.1%, and 70.1% respectively.

RESUMO

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a serious disease characterized by a rapid decline in kidney function. Oxidative stress is the primary pathogenesis of AKI. Salvianolic acid B (SalB), a water-soluble compound extracted from Salvia miltiorrhiza, possesses a potent antioxidant activity. Here, we investigated the protective effect of SalB against renal ischemia-reperfusion injury (I/R) in mice. Briefly, by analyzing renal function, oxidative stress markers and inflammatory biomarkers, we found that SalB could improve kidney damage, reduce oxidative stress and inflammatory factor levels. Interestingly, the expression of the NLR family pyrin domain-containing 3 (NLRP3), caspase-1, pyroptosis related proteins gasdermin D (GSDMD) and interleukin (IL)-1ß, which were significantly upregulated in the kidney tissues of I/R group, was effectively reversed by SalB. Meanwhile, renal tubular epithelial cells hypoxia and reoxygenation model was used to explore pyroptosis of caspase-1-dependent. Further mechanism study showed that the SalB pretreatment could promote the increase of nuclear factor erythroid-2 related factor 2 (Nrf2) nuclear accumulation, which significantly suppressed oxidative stress, proinflammatory cytokines, NLRP3 inflammasome activation and pyroptosis. These results indicate that SalB can inhibit caspase-1/GSDMD-mediated pyroptosis by activating Nrf2/NLRP3 signaling pathway, resulting in alleviating I/R injury in mice.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) self-testing may help improve test uptake among female sex workers. China has implemented many HIV self-testing programs among men who have sex with men, creating an opportunity for promotion among female sex workers. However, there is a limited literature on examining HIV self-testing among female sex workers. This study aimed to examine HIV self-testing experiences and its determinants among female sex workers in China. METHODS: A venue-based, cross-sectional study was conducted among Chinese female sex workers in 2019. Participants completed a survey including social-demographic characteristics, sexual behaviors, and HIV self-testing history, the distribution of which were analyzed using descriptive analysis. Multivariable logistic regression was conducted to identify associations with HIV self-testing. RESULTS: Among 1287 Chinese female sex workers, 1072 (83.3%, 95% confidence interval [CI] 81.2-85.3%) had ever tested for HIV, and 103 (8.0%, 95% CI 6.6-9.6%) had ever used HIV self-testing. More than half reported that the self-test was their first HIV test (59.2%, 61/103), around one-fifth reported HIV self-testing results influenced the price of sex (21.4%, 22/103). A minority of individuals reported ever experiencing pressure to undertake HIV self-testing (6.8%, 7/103). After adjusting for covariates, HIV self-testing was positively associated with receiving anal sex in the past month (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 2.2, 95% CI 1.4-3.5), using drugs before or during sex (aOR = 2.8, 95% CI 1.8-4.5), injecting drugs in the past 6 months (aOR = 2.6, 95% CI 1.2-6.0), being diagnosed with other sexually transmitted infections (aOR = 1.6, 95% CI 1.0-2.5), tested for other sexually transmitted infections in the past six months (aOR = 3.4, 95% CI 2.1-5.5), ever tested in the hospital (aOR = 3.4, 95% CI 2.0-5.6), and ever tested in the community (aOR = 1.5, 95% CI 1.2-1.9). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that HIV self-testing could expand overall HIV testing uptake, increase HIV testing frequency, reach sub-groups of high-risk female sex workers and has limited potential harms among female sex workers. HIV self-testing should be incorporated among Chinese female sex workers as a complement to facility-based HIV testing services.
