In this paper, the enhancement of sodium glutamate (SG) on activity of anaerobic ammonia oxidizing (anammox) bacteria was investigated by batch tests. The results illustrated that SG played an important role in enhancing anammox bacterial activity when the SG dosage ranged from 0.50 to 1.25 mM, and the optimal SG concentration was 1.00 mM. The performance of anammox was the best and the total nitrogen removal rate (TNRR) was 138.2 mg N g-1·VSS·d-1 when the concentration of SG was 1.00 mM. The results of EPS and anammox bacterial biomass measurement indicated that protein (PN), polysaccharide (PS), total EPS and the bacterial abundance reached the maximum of 1.00 mM SG addition. Compared to the control tests, the EPS content and bacterial abundance increased by 38.2% and 75.8%, respectively. In addition, the cloning results showed that the community structure of anammox bacteria evolved in species level of Candidatus Brocadia genus under the condition of SG enhancement.

PURPOSE: To develop and identify a MRI-based radiomics nomogram for the preoperative prediction of parametrial invasion (PMI) in patients with early-stage cervical cancer (ECC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: All 137 patients with ECC (FIGO stages IB-IIA) underwent T2WI and DWI scans before radical hysterectomy surgery. The radiomics signatures were calculated with the radiomics features which were extracted from T2WI and DWI and selected by the least absolute shrinkage and selection operation regression. The support vector machine (SVM) models were built using radiomics signatures derived from T2WI and joint T2WI and DWI respectively to evaluate the performance of radiomics signatures for distinguishing patients with PMI. A radiomics nomogram was drawn based on the radiomics signatures with a better performance, patient's age, and pathological grade; its discrimination and calibration performances were estimated. RESULTS: For T2WI and joint T2WI and DWI, the radiomics signatures yielded an AUC of 0.797 (95% CI, 0.682-0.911) vs 0.946 (95% CI, 0.899-0.994), and 0.780 (95% CI, 0.641-0.920) vs 0.921 (95% CI, 0.832-1) respectively in the primary and validation cohorts. The radiomics nomogram, integrating the radiomics signatures from joint T2WI and DWI, patient's age, and pathological grade, showed excellent discrimination, with C-index values of 0.969 (95% CI, 0.933-1) and 0.941 (95% CI, 0.868-1) in the primary and validation cohorts, respectively. The calibration curve showed a good agreement. CONCLUSIONS: The radiomics nomogram performed well for the preoperative prediction of PMI in patients with ECC and may be used as a supplementary tool to provide individualized treatment plans for patients with ECC. KEY POINTS: • No previously reported study that has utilized radiomics nomogram to preoperatively predict PMI for patients with ECC. • Radiomics model involves radiomics features extracted from joint T2WI and DWI which characterize the heterogeneity between tumors in patients with ECC. • Radiomics nomogram can assist clinicians with individualized treatment decision-making for patients with ECC.

Diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) is a unique examining method in tumor diagnosis, acute stroke evaluation. Single-shot echo planar imaging is currently conventional method for DWI. However, single-shot DWI suffers from image distortion, blurring and low spatial resolution. Although multi-shot DWI improves image resolution, it brings phase variations among different shots at the same time. In this paper, we introduce a smooth phase constraint of each shot image into multi-shot navigator-free DWI reconstruction by imposing the low-rankness of Hankel matrix constructed from the k-space data. Furthermore, we exploit the partial sum minimization of singular values to constrain the low-rankness of Hankel matrix. Results on brain imaging data show that the proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art methods in terms of artifacts removal and our method potentially has the ability to reconstruct high number of shot of DWI.

BACKGROUND: Endothelial dysfunction may play a key role in non-obstructive coronary artery atherosclerosis. Our study aimed to evaluate the vascular endothelial function and its influencing factors in patients with non-obstructive coronary artery atherosclerosis. METHODS: A total of 131 consecutive patients with non-obstructive coronary artery atherosclerosis were enrolled. Flow-mediated dilatation (FMD) was measured at baseline and 1-year follow-up. Endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) were counted by staining the fasting venous blood with antibodies against CD34 and vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2. RESULTS: Systolic blood pressure, pulse pressure and the levels of HbA1c in participants with baseline FMD < 6% (n = 65) were significantly higher than those with baseline FMD ≥ 6% (n = 66). Baseline FMD was negatively associated with EPC counts (r = - 0.199, P < 0.05) and systolic blood pressure (r = - 0.315, P < 0.01). The 1-year FMD was significantly increased compared to the baseline FMD [(9.31 ± 5.62) % vs (7.31 ± 5.26) %, P < 0.001]. Independent predictors of FMD improvement included elevated EPC counts (OR = 1.104, 95% CI: 1.047-1.165, P < 0.001) and decreased levels of serum creatinine (OR = 0.915, 95% CI: 0.843-0.993, P = 0.034). CONCLUSIONS: Family history of premature cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, elevated systolic pressure, and HbA1c > 6.5% are independent risk factors for endothelial dysfunction in non-obstructive atherosclerotic patients. Elevated peripheral blood EPC counts and decreased levels of serum creatinine are independent predictors of endothelial function improvement.

A reaction typically involves a few active modes while the other modes are largely preserved throughout the reaction as spectators. Excitation of an active mode is expected to promote the reaction, but depositing energy in a spectator mode typically has no effect, because of the differing ability for energy flow to the reaction coordinate. In this work, we report a surprising case of mode specificity in a key radical-radical reaction OH + HO2 → H2O + O2, where such canonical expectations fail to hold. Despite its spectator nature, the vibrational excitation of the OH reactant is shown at low collision energies to enhance the reactivity significantly. This unique effect can be attributed to the increased attraction with HO2 due to the larger dipole of the stretched OH. At low collision energies, the stronger attraction increases the chance of capturing the reactants to form a hydrogen-bonded complex, thus of passing through the submerged barrier. The novel mechanism differs from the conventional vibrational enhancement via coupling to the reaction coordinate at the transition state, enriching our understanding of mode specificity in chemistry.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze relation of ASXL2 gene mutation with the clinical characteristics, prognosis and C-KIT gene mutation in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients with AML1-ETO fusion gene. METHODS: The clinical data of 63 primary AML patients with AML1-ETO fusion gene were collected and retrospectively analyzed. The mutation of ASXL2 gene was directly sequenced by PCR. The clinical characteristics, C-KIT mutation rate and prognosis were compared between the patients with ASXL2 gene mutation (group A) and non-mutation (group B). RESULTS: Among 63 patients, 8 (12.70%) cases of ASXL2 mutation gene was detected. Hemoglobin level in peripheral blood of patients in group A was significantly lower than that in group B (P<0.01). There was no significant difference in sex, ages proportion of bone marrow blasts, lymph node enlargement, peripheral blood leukocytes count and platelets between the two groups (P>0.05). The infiltration of central nervous system, liver and spleen was not found in both groups. The expression of CD33 in group A was significantly lower than that in group B (P<0.05), but the results of other immunophenotype analysis were not significantly different between the two groups (P>0.05). The remission rate and median survival time were not significantly different between two groups (P>0.05). The detection rate of C-KIT gene mutation were not significantly different between group A and group B (P>0.05). CONCLUSION: Among AML patients with AML1-ETO fusion gene, ASXL2 gene mutation accounts for a certain ratio, and the peripheral blood hemoglobin concentration and CD33 expression in these patients are often low. At the same time, ASXL2 gene mutation may not be closely related with C-KIT gene mutation.

Since the SARS outbreak 18 years ago, a large number of severe acute respiratory syndrome-related coronaviruses (SARSr-CoV) have been discovered in their natural reservoir host, bats1-4. Previous studies indicated that some of those bat SARSr-CoVs have the potential to infect humans5-7. Here we report the identification and characterization of a novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) which caused an epidemic of acute respiratory syndrome in humans in Wuhan, China. The epidemic, which started from 12 December 2019, has caused 2,050 laboratory-confirmed infections with 56 fatal cases by 26 January 2020. Full-length genome sequences were obtained from five patients at the early stage of the outbreak. They are almost identical to each other and share 79.5% sequence identify to SARS-CoV. Furthermore, it was found that 2019-nCoV is 96% identical at the whole-genome level to a bat coronavirus. The pairwise protein sequence analysis of seven conserved non-structural proteins show that this virus belongs to the species of SARSr-CoV. The 2019-nCoV virus was then isolated from the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid of a critically ill patient, which can be neutralized by sera from several patients. Importantly, we have confirmed that this novel CoV uses the same cell entry receptor, ACE2, as SARS-CoV.

OBJECTIVE: To study the efficacy and safety of vitamin D as an adjuvant therapy for childhood pneumonia through a systematic review. METHODS: Cochrane Library, PubMed, EMbase, CNKI, Wanfang Data, and Weipu Data were searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of vitamin D as the adjuvant therapy for childhood pneumonia published up to August 2019. Literature screening, quality assessment, and data extraction were performed based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Revman 5.3 was used to perform the Meta analysis of outcome indicators. RESULTS: A total of 7 RCTs with 1 527 children were included, with 762 children in the vitamin D adjuvant therapy group and 765 children in the control group. The results of the Meta analysis showed that vitamin D adjuvant therapy had no effect on recovery time (P=0.67), length of hospital stay (P=0.73), and time to relief of fever (P=0.43). Furthermore, it did not reduce the recurrence rate (P=0.14), rate of adverse events (P=0.20), and mortality rate (P=0.98) of childhood pneumonia. CONCLUSIONS: Current evidence shows that vitamin D adjuvant therapy has no marked efficacy in the treatment of childhood pneumonia.

Glucose electrolysis offers a prospect of value-added glucaric acid synthesis and energy-saving hydrogen production from the biomass-based platform molecules. Here we report that nanostructured NiFe oxide (NiFeOx) and nitride (NiFeNx) catalysts, synthesized from NiFe layered double hydroxide nanosheet arrays on three-dimensional Ni foams, demonstrate a high activity and selectivity towards anodic glucose oxidation. The electrolytic cell assembled with these two catalysts can deliver 100 mA cm-2 at 1.39 V. A faradaic efficiency of 87% and glucaric acid yield of 83% are obtained from the glucose electrolysis, which takes place via a guluronic acid pathway evidenced by in-situ infrared spectroscopy. A rigorous process model combined with a techno-economic analysis shows that the electrochemical reduction of glucose produces glucaric acid at a 54% lower cost than the current chemical approach. This work suggests that glucose electrolysis is an energy-saving and cost-effective approach for H2 production and biomass valorization.

BACKGROUND: The underlying mechanism between hope and quality of life is as yet unknown. We aim to examine the potential mediating effect of depression and resilience and the moderated effect of sex in this well-established association. METHODS: Two hundred seven patients diagnosed with schizophrenia were administered a questionnaire battery that measured hope, depression, resilience and QOL. A multiple mediation model was used to examine the mediating effect of resilience and depression on the association between hope and QOL. A subgroup analysis was performed and a moderated mediation model was examined to find and test the moderated effect of sex on the mediation model. We used Mplus to perform moderation and mediation analyses so that the mediators and moderator could function together in the same model. RESULT: Sex was the moderator on the direct path between hope and QOL. The relationship between hope and QOL was mediated by resilience and depression in both sexes. When compared with female patients, the effect of hope on QOL was completely mediated by resilience and depression in males. In female patients, the model was partially mediated, and the direct effect of hope on QOL was significantly negatively correlated with the level of hope. CONCLUSION: We present a conceptual model containing the mediated effects of resilience and depression and the moderated effect of sex between hope and QOL, which we believe facilitates the understanding of these associations. This model should be useful in the formulation of strategies to improve QOL.

BACKGROUND: Hemorrhage is one of the most serious complications of endoscopic sphincterotomy (EST). The risk factors for delayed hemorrhage are not clear. This study aimed to explore the risk factors for post-EST delayed hemorrhage and suggest some precautionary measures. METHODS: This study analyzed 8477 patients who successfully underwent endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and EST between January 2007 and June 2015 in the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanchang University. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to find the risk factors for delayed hemorrhage after EST. RESULTS: Of the 8477 patients screened, 137 (1.62%) experienced delayed hemorrhage. Univariate analysis showed that male, the severity of jaundice, duodenal papillary adenoma and carcinoma, diabetes, intraoperative bleeding, moderate and large incisions, and directional deviation of incision are risk factors for post-EST delayed hemorrhage (P < 0.05). Multivariate analysis showed that intraoperative bleeding [odds ratio (OR) = 3.326; 95% CI: 1.785-6.196; P < 0.001] and directional deviation of incision (OR = 2.184; 95% CI: 1.266-3.767; P = 0.005) are independent risk factors for post-EST delayed hemorrhage. CONCLUSIONS: The incidence of post-EST delayed hemorrhage was 1.62% in our study. Intraoperative bleeding and directional deviation of incision are independent risk factors for post-EST delayed hemorrhage.

The commonly used left atrial appendage (LAA) occlusion (LAAO) devices, Watchman (Boston Scientific, Marlborough, MA, USA) and Amulet (Abbott, Plymouth, Minnesota, USA), both rely on oversizing for stabilization. Therefore, occluding large LAA (ostium >=31mm for Watchman or landing zone >=31mm for Amulet) are not possible. LAmbre (Lifetech Scientific Co., Shenzhen, China) device has an additional stabilization mechanism by catching the LAA trabeculations using its 8 claws1. This potentially allows LAmbre in occluding large LAA with ostium up to 40mm, i.e. size of its largest cover. The study aimed to evaluate procedural and short-term outcomes of LAmbre device in occluding large LAA.

BACKGROUND: The chemokine 13 (CXCL13) and its chemokine receptor 5 (CXCR5) are involved in the onset of various types of cancer. However, their role in cervical cancer (CC) remains unknown. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the role of chemokine 13 (CXCL13) and its receptor in CC. METHOD: The expression of CXCL13/CXCR5 and the infiltration of CXCR5+CD8+ T cells in CC, cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), normal cervical epithelial (NCE) tissues, and in CC cell lines were analysed and the associated clinical significance was determined. In vitro, CXCL13 overexpression and DNA methyltransferase inhibition (through S110) were used to investigate the biological function and the underlying mechanism that regulate CXCL13 expression. Tumor growth and liver metastasis were also evaluated in xenogenous subcutaneously implant model. RESULTS: CXCL13/CXCR5 expression levels and the infiltration of CXCR5+CD8+ T cells were significantly decreased in CC tissues compared with CIN and NCE tissues. CXCL13 downregulation was significantly correlated with the FIGO stages, lymph node metastasis, interstitial infiltration depth, and pathological grade. The overexpression of CXCL13 suppressed CC cell migration. CXCL13 downregulation was associated with hypermethylation in CC cell lines, and in primary tumor biopsies. Furthermore, a CpG dinucleotide at the HIF-1a transcription factor motifs in the promoter element of CXCL13 was consistently methylated in CC cells and associated with HIF-1a. CXCL13 overexpression and S110 treatment dramatically repressed tumor growth and liver metastasis in the xenograft model, whereas its low expression increased the risk of death in CC patients. CONCLUSION: DNA methylation-dependent CXCL13 downregulation may promote cervical carcinogenesis and progression.

By screening the nanoplatforms including fluorodendrimers with different chemical structures, the optimized nanoparticle NPF13-5 mediates the most efficient silencing of prohibitin 1, inhibition of cell proliferation, and induction of cell apoptosis towards A549 lung adenocarcinoma cells.

Previous studies have shown that forkhead box P4 antisense RNA 1 (FOXP4-AS1) is dysregulated in tumor tissues and can serve as a prognostic indicator for multiple cancers. However, the clinical significance of FOXP4-AS1 in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) remains unclear. The goal of this study is to recognize the possible clinical significance of long noncoding RNA FOXP4-AS1 in patients with early stage PDAC. A total of 112 patients from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) PDAC cohort, receiving RNA sequencing, were involved in the study. Survival analysis, functional mechanism, and potential small molecule drugs of target therapy of FOXP4-AS1 were performed in this study. Survival analysis in TCGA PDAC cohort suggested that patients with high FOXP4-AS1 expression had significantly augmented possibility of death than in PDAC patients with lower FOXP4-AS1 expression (adjusted P = .008; adjusted HR = 2.143, 95% CI = 1.221-3.760). In this study, a genome-wide RNA sequencing dataset was used to identify 927 genes co-expressing with FOXP4-AS1 in PDAC tumor tissues. A total of 676 differentially expressed genes were identified between different FOXP4-AS1 expression groups. Functional enrichment analysis of these genes and gene set enrichment analysis for PDAC genome-wide RNA sequencing dataset was done. We have found that FOXP4-AS1 may function in PDAC by participating in biological processes and pathways including oxidative phosphorylation, tricarboxylic acid cycle, classical tumor-related pathways such as NF-kappaB as well as Janus kinase/signal transducers in addition to activators of transcription, cell proliferation, and adhesion. In addition, we also screened two potential targeted therapeutic small molecule drugs (dimenhydrinate and metanephrine) for FOXP4-AS1 in PDAC. In conclusion, our present study demonstrated that higher expression of FOXP4-AS1 in PDAC tumor tissues were related with an inferior medical outcome. Through multiple genome-wide approaches, we identified the potential molecular mechanisms of FOXP4-AS1 in PDAC and two targeted therapeutic drugs for it.

Most bulk-scale graphene is produced by a top-down approach, exfoliating graphite, which often requires large amounts of solvent with high-energy mixing, shearing, sonication or electrochemical treatment1-3. Although chemical oxidation of graphite to graphene oxide promotes exfoliation, it requires harsh oxidants and leaves the graphene with a defective perforated structure after the subsequent reduction step3,4. Bottom-up synthesis of high-quality graphene is often restricted to ultrasmall amounts if performed by chemical vapour deposition or advanced synthetic organic methods, or it provides a defect-ridden structure if carried out in bulk solution4-6. Here we show that flash Joule heating of inexpensive carbon sources-such as coal, petroleum coke, biochar, carbon black, discarded food, rubber tyres and mixed plastic waste-can afford gram-scale quantities of graphene in less than one second. The product, named flash graphene (FG) after the process used to produce it, shows turbostratic arrangement (that is, little order) between the stacked graphene layers. FG synthesis uses no furnace and no solvents or reactive gases. Yields depend on the carbon content of the source; when using a high-carbon source, such as carbon black, anthracitic coal or calcined coke, yields can range from 80 to 90 per cent with carbon purity greater than 99 per cent. No purification steps are necessary. Raman spectroscopy analysis shows a low-intensity or absent D band for FG, indicating that FG has among the lowest defect concentrations reported so far for graphene, and confirms the turbostratic stacking of FG, which is clearly distinguished from turbostratic graphite. The disordered orientation of FG layers facilitates its rapid exfoliation upon mixing during composite formation. The electric energy cost for FG synthesis is only about 7.2 kilojoules per gram, which could render FG suitable for use in bulk composites of plastic, metals, plywood, concrete and other building materials.

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) are serious problems in landscape waters sourced from reclaimed water. In this study, the suppression effects of UV-C irradiation on microalgal growth were researched to find a possible preventive approach. Microcystis aeruginosa and Chlorella vulgaris were exposed to UV-C irradiation and then cultured in real reclaimed water for 7-18 d. UV-C irradiation at 50-200 mJ cm-2 could inhibit the growth of M. aeruginosa, C. vulgaris, and both microalgae in co-culture for 3-14, 1-3, and 1-5 d respectively. In addition, UV-C irradiation could cause damage to the cell integrity. At 100-200 mJ cm-2 UV-C, the proportion of microalgal membrane damage (Pmd) in M. aeruginosa cells increased rapidly to 56%-76% from day 3, whereas that in C. vulgaris cells increased to 23%-62% within 3 d. The photochemical efficiency (represented by Y value) of the irradiated groups was negatively affected immediately after UV-C irradiation and recovered gradually during the incubation. The Y value of M. aeruginosa cells began to recover from days 3 to 14, whereas that of C. vulgaris recovered much more quickly, from days 0.1 to 1. Overall, the irradiation-induced suppressive effects on algal growth correlated positively with the UV-C doses. Because M. aeruginosa was more sensitive to UV-C irradiation, UV-C irradiation not only controlled the total biomass of the mixed algae but also selectively reestablished the dominance of the nontoxic C. vulgaris.

Tumour necrosis factor-α-induced protein-8-like-2 (TIPE2) has been associated with the progression of numerous cancers. Cisplatin, as a classical chemotherapy strategy for cancers, has been applied in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) clinical therapy but bears the disadvantage of chemoresistance. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of TIPE2 in cisplatin resistance and illustrate the detailed molecular mechanism. In this study, we proved that TIPE2 was down-regulated in cisplatin (DDP)-resistant NSCLC tissues and DDP-resistant NSCLC cells compared with the sensitive control. The inhibition of TIPE2 contributed to cell cisplatin-resistance, and the overexpression of TIPE2 enhanced cisplatin sensitivity and autophagy. Furthermore, increased TIPE2 elevated apoptosis in DDP-resistant NSCLC cells. In addition, TIPE2 restored the activity of mTOR signalling. Preconditioning with the mTOR activator 3BDO abrogated TIPE2-mediated depression in cisplatin-evoked autophagy. In conclusion, aberrant TIPE2 expression may contribute to the occurrence of chemoresistance by interfering with autophagy in NSCLC in an mTOR-dependent manner. TIPE2 could be used as a novel therapeutic target to overcome cisplatin-resistant NSCLC.

RESUMO

The fate of a photoexcited molecule is often strongly influenced by electronic degeneracies, such as conical intersections, which break the Born-Oppenheimer separation of electronic and nuclear motion. Detailed information concerning internal energy redistribution in a nonadiabatic process can be extracted from the product state distribution of a photofragment in photodissociation. Here, we focus on the nonadiabatic photodissociation of phenol and discuss the internal excitation of the phenoxyl fragment using both symmetry analysis and wave packet dynamics. It is shown that unique and general selection rules exist, which can be attributed to the geometric phase in the adiabatic representation. Further, our results provide a reinterpretation of the experimental data, shedding light on the impact of conical intersections on the product state distribution.
