RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Visfatin is significantly upregulated in colorectal cancer (CRC). However, its exact role in CRC progression and the regulatory mechanism involved in this process have not been fully illuminated. The aim of this study was to investigate the roles of visfatin in CRC progression and the potential molecular mechanism. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In vitro, two CRC cell lines (DLD-1 and SW480) were transfected with visfatin, si-visfatin, and their control vectors. Some cells were transfected with miR-140-3p mimics or miRNA negative control. Cell Counting Kit-8 and transwell invasive assays were used to detect cell proliferation and invasion ability. Luciferase reporter assays were performed to confirm whether CXC motif chemokine receptor 4 (CXCR4) directly targets miR-140-3p. Western blotting and qRT-PCR analyses were respectively conducted to evaluate the protein and mRNA levels of stromal cell-derived factor-1 (SDF-1) and CXCR4. In vivo, DLD-1 cells transfected with visfatin construct or vector control were inoculated into nude mice. After 5 weeks, the mice were sacrificed, and the tumor nodules were weighed. The expression of visfatin, SDF-1, and CXCR4 in tumor tissues was detected via immunohistochemistry analysis. RESULTS: In vitro, the transfection of visfatin promoted the proliferation and invasion of CRC cells, as well as upregulated the expression of SDF-1/CXCR4. MiR-140-3p directly targets the 3'untranslated region of CXCR4. MiR-140-3p expression was downregulated by treatment with visfatin, and miR-140-3p exerted similar effects to those of visfatin knockdown on the proliferation and invasion of CRC cells. In vivo, visfatin stimulated CRC tumor growth and downregulated miR-140-3p expression, whereas it upregulated SDF-1/CXCR4 expression. CONCLUSIONS: Visfatin promotes CRC progression by downregulating the SDF-1/CXCR4-mediated expression of miR-140-3p both in vitro and in vivo.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To investigate the application value of serum CXC Chemokine-13 (CXCL-13) and platelet endothelial cell adhesion molecule-1 (PECAM-1) in elderly patients with gastric cancer (GC). METHODS: Ninety-eight elderly GC patients admitted to the Affiliated Hexian Memorial Hospital of Southern Medical University were selected as a research group, and 60 healthy subjects of the same age and in relatively good health who underwent physical examination at the same period were selected as a control group. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to detect the levels of CXCL13 and PECAM-1 in serum. The clinical diagnosis and prognostic value of serum CXCL13 and PECAM-1 in elderly GC patients were analyzed. RESULTS: The levels of CXCL13 and PECAM-1 in serum of the research group were significantly higher than those of the control group (P < 0.001). The AUC value of combined diagnosis of elderly GC patients by serum CXCL13 and PECAM-1 was 0.950, and that of combined evaluation of prognosis of patients was 0.849. Serum CXCL13 and PECAM-1 were significantly related to TNM staging, differentiation degree and tumor diameter in elderly GC patients (P < 0.05). High levels of CXCL13 and PECAM-1 were significantly associated with lower 5-year OS (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Elderly GC patients with higher TNM staging, longer tumor diameters, high levels of CXCL13 and PECAM-1 had an increased risk of poor prognosis. Serum CXCL13 and PECAM-1 can be used as effective indicators for diagnosis and prognosis of elderly patients with GC, and can predict the 5-year OS in patients.

RESUMO

A topological meron features a non-coplanar structure, whose order parameters in the core region are perpendicular to those near the perimeter. A meron is half of a skyrmion, and both have potential applications for information carrying and storage. Although merons and skyrmions in ferromagnetic materials can be readily obtained via inter-spin interactions, their behaviour and even existence in ferroelectric materials are still elusive. Here we observe using electron microscopy not only the atomic morphology of merons with a topological charge of 1/2, but also a periodic meron lattice in ultrathin PbTiO3 films under tensile epitaxial strain on a SmScO3 substrate. Phase-field simulations rationalize the formation of merons for which an epitaxial strain, as a single alterable parameter, plays a critical role in the coupling of lattice and charge. This study suggests that by engineering strain at the nanoscale it should be possible to fabricate topological polar textures, which in turn could facilitate the development of nanoscale ferroelectric devices.

RESUMO

Objective: To analyze clinical characteristics of intracranial vessel involvement in Takayasu's arteritis (TA). Methods: Retrospectively analyzed 135 hospitalized TA patients' clinical data in Beijing Anzhen Hospital from November 2012 to November 2018. Based on intracranial artery (IA) complicated or not, TA patients were divided into two groups:32 patients within involvement and 103 patients without involvement. The difference in comparison of imaging types, basic data and laboratory test were analyzed. Results: The proportion of TA patients with intracranial vascular involvement was 23.7% (32/135) and the most common site was internal carotid artery (intracranial segment) (59.4%, 19/32). The incidences of hypertension and coronary heart disease were significantly higher in TA patients with intracranial vascular involvement compared with the patients without intracranial involvement (46.9% vs 26.2%, 21.9% vs 6.8%, χ(2)=4.863, 4.460, all P<0.05). The rate of tocilizumab treatment in the intracranial vascular involved group was higher than that in the group without intracranial vascular involvement (40.6% vs 19.4%, χ(2)=5.945, P<0.05). The platelet count in patients with intracranial involvement group was significantly lower than that in patients without intracranial involvement group [(218±55)×10(9)/L vs (272±71)×10(9)/L, t=-3.570, P<0.01], while the hemoglobin [(130±17) vs (121±18) g/L, t=2.363, P<0.05] and triglyceride [1.22(0.75, 1.64) vs 0.92(0.63, 1.21) mmol/L, U=1 017.000, P<0.01] were significantly higher than those without intracranial vascular involvement. Moreover, coronary artery involvement presented more frequently in the intracranial vascular involved group than the group without intracranial vascular involvement (43.8% vs 14.6%, χ(2)=12.331, P<0.01). Logistic regression analysis showed that the incidence of intracranial vascular disease in TA patients with coronary artery involvement was 4 times higher than that in patients without coronary artery lesions (OR=3.965, 95%CI:1.584-9.926, P=0.003). Conclusion: The proportion of intracranial vascular involvement in TA is not rare, TA patients with cardiovascular risk factors should be considered to strengthen imaging examination of intracranial vessels.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To assess the associations of different monitoring metrics for short-term exposure to ambient ozone (O3) with pulmonary function and airway inflammation in healthy young adults. METHODS: A total of 97 healthy young college students were recruited and followed in a panel study conducted from December 2017 to June 2018. Each participant underwent 3 follow-up visits, and lung function and fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) were measured at each visit. Ambient air pollutant concentrations were obtained from the environment monitoring station of Beijing closest to the participant residences, and meteorological data were collected from China Meteorological Data Service Center. Linear mixed-effect models were applied to assess the associations between different monitoring metrics for ambient O3 short-term exposure with pulmonary function or airway inflammation in the healthy young adults. RESULTS: During the study period, the P50 (P25, P75) values for ambient O3 concentration expressed as daily 1-hour maximum (O3-1 h max), daily maximum 8-hour average (O3-8 h max) and 24-hour average (O3-24 h avg) were 102.5 (76.8, 163.0) µg/m3, 91.1 (68.3, 154.3) µg/m3 and 61.6 (36.9, 81.7) µg/m3, respectively. The different monitoring metrics for short-term exposure to ambient O3 were significantly associated with reduced forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1) and increased FeNO. An interquartile range (IQR) increase in 6-d moving average of O3-1 h max (IQR=71.5 µg/m3) was associated with a 6.2% (95%CI: -11.8%, -0.5%) decrease in FEV1 and a 63.3% (95%CI: 13.8%, 134.3%) increase in FeNO. An IQR increase in 7-d moving average of O3-8 h max (IQR=62.0 µg/m3) was associated with a 6.2% (95%CI: -11.6%, -0.7%) decrease in FEV1and a 75.5% (95%CI: 19.3%, 158.0%) increase in FeNO. An IQR increase in 5-d moving average of O3-24 h avg (IQR=32.9 µg/m3) was associated with a 3.7% (95%CI: -7.1%, -0.2%) decrease in FEV1and a 25.3% (95%CI: 3.6%, 51.6%) increase in FeNO. There was no significant association between the three monitoring metrics for O3 exposure and peak expiratory flow (PEF). CONCLUSION: Short-term exposure to ambient O3 was associated with decreased lung function and increased airway inflammation among the healthy young adults, and daily 1-hour maximum was more sensitively to the respiratory effects of O3.

RESUMO

Over the past three decades, the number of obese people has risen steadily. The chronic low-grade inflammatory state and the non-specific activation of the immune system have contributed greatly to the development of obesity-related immunology. Food allergy as a kind of inflammatory disease with abnormal immune response may be associated with obesity. This review begins with the pro-inflammatory immunological effects of adipose tissue in obesity, and explains the possible effects of obesity on food allergy. In short, obesity not only directly causes imbalance of allergic-related immune cells in adipose tissue, but also indirectly causes this consequence through affecting expression of adipocytokines and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) in adipose tissue. As a result, circulating levels of pro-inflammatory factors which are partly derived from adipose tissue increase, which might cause intestinal barrier injury. Therefore, obesity may increase the risk of food allergy

RESUMO

Objective: To explore the occupational stress status and influencing factors of workers in a textile factory in Zhejiang Provice. Methods: In October 2018, 505 workers from a textile factory in Zhejiang Province were selected as research objects by convenient sampling method. A total of 505 questionnaires were distributed, 495 of which were effective and the effective recovery rate was 98.0%. Job Content Questionnaire (JCQ) and Effort Reward Imbalance Questionnaire (REI) were used to investigate textile workers' occupational stress and analyze its influencing factors. The differences of the composition ratio of different groups were tested by χ(2) test. The influencing factors such as age, gender and occupation on occupational stress were analyzed by multivariate logistic regression. Results: ERI analysis results showed that the high and low occupational stress accounted for 30.1% and 69.9%, respectively. The differences of occupational stress among workers of different job types and working ages were statistically significant (P<0.05) . The detection rates of high occupational stress of paper workers and spinners were 47.8% (11/23) and 44.8% (30/67) , respectively, higher than other jobs. The detection rate of high occupational stress for workers with more than 5 years of service was 46.4% (13/28) . The results of JCQ analysis showed that there was no statistical significance in the differences of daily working hours and length of service between different gender, education levels, types of work patterns, and occupational stress (P>0.05) . Job types had significant effects on the occupational stress defined by ERI (P<0.05) , the risk of occupational stress was 2.151 times than that of the coiler. Conclusion: There are significant differences in occupational stress risk among workers of different types of work in textile industry, so different measures should be taken to prevent and control occupational stress in different jobs.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To study the mechanism of lncRNA GAS5 affecting epithelial-mesenchymal transition and invasion of breast cancer cells by regulating miR-216b. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Quantitative Real Time-Polymerase Chain Reaction (qRT-PCR) was used to detect the expressions of GAS5 and miR-216b in breast cancer and paracancerous tissues. The relationship between GAS5 and clinicopathological parameters of breast cancer patients was analyzed. The Dual-Luciferase reporter gene was used to detect the interaction between GAS5 and miR-216b and the transwell invasion assay was used to detect the invasive ability of lung cancer cells after GAS5 inhibition. Apoptosis assay was used to detect the apoptosis of breast cancer cells after GAS5 inhibition. Western blotting and immunofluorescence staining were used to detect the inhibition of GAS5 epithelial-mesenchymal transition. RESULTS: Compared with paracancerous tissues, in breast cancer tissues, the expression of GAS5 was increased and the expression of miR-216b was decreased. As the patients enter the later stages of breast cancer, the expression level of GAS5 in breast cancer patients was significantly elevated. The expression of GAS5 in the tissues with lymph node metastasis of breast cancer was markedly increased. The inhibition of GAS5 can promote the apoptosis of breast cancer cells; GAS5 can specifically bind to the 3' UTR of miR-216b. The expression of GAS5 inhibited the expression of E-cadherin in breast cancer cells and significantly upregulated N-cadherin, which has been confirmed by immunofluorescence staining experiments. CONCLUSIONS: GAS5 plays an important role in the development of breast cancer. GAS5 can target on miR-216b to regulate the biological behavior and epithelial-mesenchymal transition of breast cancer cells.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate whether inflammatory response or oxidative stress could induce upregulation of PTPN2, thus promoting the progression of laryngocarcinoma. PATIENTS AND METHODS: PTPN2 levels in laryngocarcinoma tissues and normal tissues were detected. In addition, PTPN2 levels in laryngocarcinoma tissues with stage 1/2 or stage 3/4 were determined as well. In vitro abundance of PTPN2 was measured in laryngocarcinoma cells and immortalized human nasopharyngeal epithelial cells. Survival analysis was conducted in laryngocarcinoma patients with high or low expression level of PTPN2. Subsequently, M4E cells were stimulated with inflammation (IFN-γ or TNF-α treatment) or oxidative stress (H2O2 stimulation), followed by determination of the protein level of PTPN2. In M4E cells stimulated with different concentrations of H2O2, the clonality and Ki-67 positive cell ratio were detected. Finally, clonality and Ki-67 positive cell ratio in M4E cells transfected with negative control or sh-PTPN2, regardless of H2O2 stimulation, were assessed. RESULTS: PTPN2 was upregulated in laryngocarcinoma tissues, especially those in stage 3/4. Similarly, in vitro abundance of PTPN2 was higher in laryngocarcinoma cell lines. The high level of PTPN2 predicted poor prognosis in laryngocarcinoma patients. IFN-γ or TNF-α treatment upregulated the protein level of PTPN2. Meanwhile, H2O2 stimulation upregulated the protein level of PTPN2, dose-dependently increased clonality, and Ki-67 positive cell ratio in M4E cells. The knockdown of PTPN2 suppressed clonality and Ki-67 positive cell ratio in M4E cells stimulated by H2O2 or not. CONCLUSIONS: Inflammatory response or oxidative stress could induce upregulation of PTPN2, thus promoting the proliferative ability of laryngocarcinoma.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Increasing antibiotic resistance has motivated interest in non-antibiotic prophylaxis of recurrent urinary tract infections (rUTI). OBJECTIVES: To conduct a systematic review of the current state of evidence of acupuncture for uncomplicated rUTI in women. SEARCH STRATEGY: Nine databases (PubMed, Embase, CENTRAL, CINAHL, AMED, CBM, CNKI, CQVIP, Wanfang) were searched from inception to February 2019. SELECTION CRITERIA: Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating the effects of acupuncture and related therapies for prophylaxis or treatment of uncomplicated rUTI in women were included. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS: Risk of bias was assessed, and the quality and strength of evidence evaluated using the GRADE framework. Results were reported as risk ratios (RR) for dichotomous outcomes or mean differences (MD) for continuous outcomes, with 95% confidence intervals (CI). MAIN RESULTS: Five RCTs involving 341 participants were included. Methodological quality of studies and strength of the evidence were low to moderate. The chance of achieving a composite cure with acupuncture therapies was greater than that with antibiotics (three studies, 170 participants, RR 1.92, 95% CI 1.31-2.81, I2  = 38%). The risk of UTI recurrence was lower with acupuncture than with no treatment (two studies, 135 participants, RR 0.39, 95% CI 0.26-0.58, I2  = 0%) and sham acupuncture (one study, 53 participants, RR 0.45, 95% CI 0.22-0.92). CONCLUSIONS: Acupuncture appeared to be beneficial for treatment and prophylaxis of rUTIs, noting the limitations of the current evidence. Given the growing challenge of antibiotic resistance, there is a need for high-quality RCTs of non-pharmacological interventions such as acupuncture. TWEETABLE ABSTRACT: This review found that acupuncture may improve treatment and prevent recurrence of urinary tract infection in women.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Vascular targeted photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a novel and promising therapy for the treatment of port-wine stains (PWS). There has been little prior exploration to our knowledge of how the dermatological vascular pattern may predict the response to PDT. OBJECTIVES: To analyse whether the vascular pattern classifications of PWS by dermoscopy can predict the efficacy of PDT. METHODS: This prospective cohort study included 163 patients with a clinical diagnosis of PWS who were treated twice with hemoporfin-mediated photodynamic therapy (HMME-PDT) at two-month intervals and followed up for 6 months. The vascular manifestations of dermoscopy with PWS were independently classified into 8 categories by 3 dermatologists. Images of the lesions were taken using VISIA, and the vascular patterns were imaged by dermoscopy by the same investigator. Images were captured before and after each treatment. The efficacy was evaluated with pre- and post-treatment VISIA images, and correlations between efficacy and vascular patterns were analysed by four dermatologists in a blinded and independent manner, between 10 January 2019 and 11 December 2019. RESULTS: In the dermoscopy images for the whole cohort, dotted and globular vessels (15.3%), short clubbed vessels (18.4%) and curved vessels (12.9%) were highly associated with cure and beneficial treatment effects. Pale halos surrounding brown dots (8.0%) and arborizing vessels (9.8%) were mainly correlated with skin lesion alleviation. Mixed vessels (12.9%), a grey-whitish veil (11.7%) and reticular patterns (11.0%) were mainly associated with no effect. The differences between each subgroup were statistically significant (P = 0.000). CONCLUSIONS: There is a clear correlation between the efficacy of PDT and the dermoscopy pattern in patients with PWS. Dermoscopy may therefore provide very useful clinical information prior to treatment in these cases. In addition, the vascular manifestations of PWS determined by dermoscopy help to predict response to PDT and manage patient expectations.

RESUMO

Objective: To investigate the clinical features and outcome of treatment for novel coronavirus pneumonia. Methods: Literature on novel coronavirus pneumonia was retrieved from PubMed and EMBASE databases. The relevant data was extracted and a meta-analysis was performed using StatsDirect statistical software V.2.8.0 to calculate the combined odds ratio. Results: Seven studies were included, consisting of 1594 cases. The meta-analysis result showed that the most common clinical symptoms of the novel coronavirus pneumonia were fever (91.6%) and cough (64.5%), followed by dyspnea (32.8%) and sputum (28.1%). Headache (10.5%), sore throat (11.2%), hemoptysis (3.2%), diarrhea (6.6%) and the other symptoms were relatively rare. Aspartate aminotransferase (29%), alanine transaminase (22.7%), and total bilirubin (11.7%) levels were elevated, except for serum albumin levels (80.4%). The common therapeutic agents used were antibiotics (87.7%), antiviral drugs (75.5%), and glucocorticoids (26.6%), while antifungal agents (7.7%) were used in few. Mechanical ventilation (13.4%), extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (1.9%), and continuous renal replacement therapy (3.8%) were used in severe cases. The rate of mortality in hospital was 7.7%, respectively. Heterogeneity between studies was significant; however, subgroup and sensitivity analysis had failed to identify clear sources of heterogeneity. Conclusion: Fever, cough and liver dysfunction are the main clinical manifestations of this disease and the mortality rate is low.

RESUMO

Environmental chemical pollutants are increasing, which brings various harms to human health. Epigenetics may be an important medium between exposure to environmental chemical contaminants and adverse health effects. Many environmental chemical pollutant exposures can regulate gene expression and promote disease occurrence and development through epigenetic mechanisms. This review outlines the mechanisms of epigenetics and the latest research advances in exposure and epigenetics of several environmental chemical substances (heavy metal arsenic, bisphenol A, dioctyl phthalate and benzene). To further understand and study the relationship between environmental chemical pollutant exposures and epigenetics in order to elucidate the mechanisms of disease occurrence and development.

RESUMO

We report constraints on the dark photon effective kinetic mixing parameter (κ) with data taken from two p-type point-contact germanium detectors of the CDEX-10 experiment at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory. The 90% confidence level upper limits on κ of solar dark photon from 205.4 kg-day exposure are derived, probing new parameter space with masses (m_{V}) from 10 to 300 eV/c^{2} in direct detection experiments. Considering dark photon as the cosmological dark matter, limits at 90% confidence level with m_{V} from 0.1 to 4.0 keV/c^{2} are set from 449.6 kg-day data, with a minimum of κ=1.3×10^{-15} at m_{V}=200 eV/c^{2}.

RESUMO

Objective: To compare the incidence of coronary microvascular disease (CMVD) between patients with non-obstructive and obstructive coronary arteries. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 97 patients with angina pectoris, who underwent the absolute quantitative PET examination of myocardial perfusion and coronary anatomy examination within 90 days. All patients were divided into two groups: non-obstructive group (72 cases, no stenosis ≥50% in all three coronary arteries) and obstructive group (25 cases, at least one coronary stenosis ≥50%; and at least one coronary stenosis<50%). Quantitative parameters derived from PET including rest myocardial blood flow (RMBF), stress myocardial blood flow (SMBF), coronary flow reserve (CFR) and cardiovascular risk factors were compared between the two groups. CMVD was defined as CFR<2.90 and SMBF<2.17 ml·min(-1)·g(-1). Results: Incidence of CMVD was significant higher in the non-obstructive coronary arteries of the obstructive group than in the non-obstructive coronary arteries of non-obstructive group (47.1% (16/34) vs. 25.5% (55/216), χ(2)=6.738, P=0.009) while incidence of CMVD was similar between non-obstructive and obstructive patients ((44% (11/25) vs. 33.3% (24/72), χ(2)=0.915, P=0.339). RMBF ((0.83±0.14) ml·min(-1)·g(-1) vs. (0.82±0.17) ml·min(-1)·g(-1)), SMBF ((2.13±0.60) ml·min(-1)·g(-1) vs. (1.91±0.50) ml·min(-1)·g(-1)) and CFR (2.59±0.66 vs. 2.36±0.47) were similar between the two groups (all P>0.05). Conclusions: CMVD can occur in non-obstructive coronary arteries in both patients with non-occlusive coronary arteries and patients with obstructive coronary arteries. Prevalence of CMVD is significantly higher in patients with obstructive coronary arteries than in patients with non-obstructive coronary arteries. The CMVD severity is similar between the two groups.

RESUMO

In recent years, there have been more and more reports about cystadenoma. Cystadenoma can occur in many parts of the body, and cystadenoma in different parts may show different clinical symptoms, however, some patients with cystadenoma have no symptoms. The vast majority of cystadenomas are benign lesions, but a small number of cystadenomas can be malignant. For example, a small number of ovarian cystadenomas and pancreatic cystadenomas may be malignant. This study reported a patient with small intestinal cystadenoma diagnosed by pathology. The patient's physical examination revealed a lesion in the left upper abdomen. He had only abdominal distension and no other discomfort. His laboratory examination results were basically normal, i.e. blood routine, urine routine, stool routine, liver function, kidney function, myocardial enzyme, tumor marker, etc. The patient underwent sectional small intestine resection and the pathological sample was analyzed. The histological findings of the resected intestinal sample were consistent with cystadenoma. Computed tomography scan of the abdomen was performed 4 months after the surgery. No recurrence of the tumor was found. The patient recovered in good condition. By consulting the literature, I found very few reports of small intestinal cystadenoma before, it was very rare. This article described the clinical manifestation, diagnosis and differential diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of a case of small intestinal cystadenoma, it suggested that cystadenoma can occur in the small intestine, other than the ovary, pancreas, liver, lung, thyroid, prostate, seminal vesicle, skin, etc. The cystadenoma in small intestine is easy to be mistaken with other tumors, such as small intestine stromal tumor, small intestine adenocarcinoma, small intestine lipoma, small intestine hemangiomas, etc., and it is difficult to fully confirm through imaging examinations, such as computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. Laparotomy and histopathological examination are necessary before definitive diagnosis. This disease can be treated by small bowel resection at the affected region and good prognosis can be achieved.

RESUMO

Objective: To investigate the preoperative constitutional varus alignment (CA) inpatients withvarus osteoarthritic knees and coronal femoral lateral bowing (FLB) by comparing the femoral axis of the patients and volunteers' with straight femoral shaft (SFS) and healthy knees, which would be used to guide the selection of valgus correction angle(VCA) of distal femur in total knee anthroplasty (TKA). Methods: From January 2018 to December 2018, 45 nonconsecutive patients (90 knees) with varus osteoarthritic knees and obvious FLB (>5°) received primary TKA,and 50 limbs with healthy knees and SFS in 25 volunteers were studied at Xinqiao Hospital. The medial proximal femoral angle (MPFA) and anatomic lateral distal femoral angle (a-LDFA) were measured and compared between the two groups. The VCA formed by distal femoral mechanical axis (DMA) and distal femoral anatomic axis (DAA) in patients and the VCA based on neutral mechanical axis (NMA) in volunteers were also compared. The Pearson's correlation analysis was performed between the angle of bowing (α) and the VCA based on NMA in patients. The measurement data was compared with t test between the two groups. Results: The results showed that the MPFA and the a-LDFA were not significantly different between the volunteers with SFS and patients with FLB (MPFA:84.9°±3.7° vs 85.6°±1.8° and a-LDFA:81.7°±1.7° vs 81.2°±1.6°, t=1.26, 1.70, both P>0.05). The VCA based on NMA in volunteers with SFS was 5.5°±0.6°(4.5°-7.4°), the preoperative DAA-DMA angle was 5.3°±0.7°(4.3°-7.8°) in patients with FLB, there was no significant difference between the two groups (t=1.70, P=0.09). The angle of bowing (α) was 7.9°±2.9° (6°-16°), the VCA based on NMA was 8.4°±1.5°(5°-10°), there was a significantly positive correlation between VCA and α (R=0.607, P<0.01). Conclusion: There is no significantly proximal or distal femoral deformity in patients with varus osteoarthritic knee and FLB (>5°), the degree of the DMA-DAAangle based on the DMA doesn't change with the increasing angular deformity of the bowing, then the bowing would be reserved if the distal femur is cut based on DMA in TKA and the preoperative CA should be restored successfully.
