RESUMO

The grass-waste management model affects soil organic carbon (SOC) and the microorganism community structure; however, studies on the relationship between the fungal community structure and the SOC chemical component at the aggregate level are poor. Solid-state 13C NMR and 18 S rDNA methods were used to evaluate the relationship between the SOC chemical composition and fungal community abundance at the aggregate level. Grass mulching significantly increased the percentage of labile carbon O-alkyl C (5.19%-11.79%) and decreased the instability of SOC (1.38-0.69). Microaggregates contained higher alkyl C (33.77%) and lower aromatic C (18.31%), and the A/O-A ratio (1.03) was higher than that of macroaggregates (0.89-0.96). Ascomycota, Basidiomycota and Mortierellomycota dominated the fungal community at the phylum level, and their abundance increased after grass mulching. Microaggregates supported more microbial diversity and richness and were rich in the Ascomycota (36.69%-67.49%) phylum, while LM aggregates were rich in Basidiomycota (5.62%-39.84%). We proved that changes in the O-alkyl C, carbonyl C, aromatic C and alkyl C of SOC chemical components were closely connected to fungal community composition, which together explained the change in fungal composition by 63.81%-71.99% among aggregates. We concluded that alterations in the chemical form of organic carbon were closely related to a change in the soil fungal community. This connection has a positive impact on soil nutrient utilization and SOC conversion in fruit-grass composite ecosystems and promotes the understanding of the relationship between the soil microbial community and nutrient cycling during long-term grass waste utilization.

Endothelial tip cell outgrowth of blood-vessel sprouts marks the initiation of angiogenesis which is critical in physiological and pathophysiological procedures. However, how mechanical characteristics of extracellular matrix (ECM) modulates tip cell formation has been largely neglected. In this study, we found enhanced CD31 expression in the stiffening outer layer of hepatocellular carcinoma than in surrounding soft tissues. Stiffened matrix promoted sprouting from endothelial cell (EC) spheroids and upregulated expressions of tip cell-enriched genes in vitro. Moreover, tip cells showed increased cellular stiffness, more actin cytoskeleton organization and enhanced YAP nuclear transfer than stalk and phalanx ECs. We further uncovered that substrate stiffness regulates FAK and Paxillin phosphorylation in focal adhesion of ECs promoting Rac1 transition from inactive to active state. YAP is subsequently activated and translocated into nucleus, leading to increased tip cell specification. p-Paxillin can also loosen the intercellular connection which also facilitates tip cell specification. Collectively our present study shows that matrix stiffness modulates tip cell formation through p-PXN-Rac1-YAP signaling axis, shedding light on the role of mechanotransduction in tip cell formation. This is of special significance in biomaterial design and treatment of some pathological situations.

Objectives: To evaluate the clinical curative effects and toxicity of recombinant human adenovirus-p53 injection (rAd-p53) plus chemotherapy (CT), radiotherapy (RT), or concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CRT) for the treatment of cervical cancer. Methods: We identified 14 eligible studies in the PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Embase, CNKI, Wangfangdate, CBM, and VIP databases from their inception to May 2021 and performed meta-analyses using RevMan version 5.3. Results: This analysis included 14 studies involving 737 patients. The results of the meta-analysis results showed significantly improved complete remission (odds ratio [OR] = 2.54, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.74-3.70, p < 0.00001), partial remission (OR = 1.56, 95% CI: 1.14-2.14, p = 0.006), and object response (OR = 4.47, 95% CI: 3.02-6.60, p < 0.00001) rates in the rAd-p53 combination therapy group compared to those in the CT/RT/CRT group. The results of subgroup analyses of CT/RT/CRT were consistent with the overall results. Regarding the incidence of adverse reactions, only the occurrence rate of fever (OR = 18.21, 95% CI: 10.54-31.47, p < 0.00001) in the rAd-p53 combination group was higher than that in the CT/RT/CRT group. No other significant differences were observed in other adverse reactions. Conclusion: RAd-p53 combined with CT/RT/CRT for the treatment of cervical cancer showed significant advantages in efficacy and safety compared to those in the CT/RT/CRT group. Background: Previous studies had shown that poor quality of early parental attachment is a risk factor for suicide, but few have focus on the mechanism between suicidal ideation and parental attachment. The aim of this study was to explore how parental attachment, anhedonia, and peer attachment were associated with suicidal ideation in adolescents. Method: Participants were enrolled in middle schools, in Hefei, Anhui, China. All participants completed socio-demographic characteristic and standard assessments on parental attachment, peer attachment, anhedonia, and suicidal ideation by paper surveys. The effect of parental attachment on suicidal ideation mediated by anhedonia and peer attachment was analyzed by a structural equation model (SEM) using SPSS AMOS 23.0. Results: The SEM analysis revealed that the standard total effect of parental attachment on suicidal ideation was -0.137 (Z=-27.00, 95% confidence interval [CI; -0.147, -0.127], p<0.001), with a direct effect of parental attachment on suicidal ideation of -0.107 (Z=-21.40, 95% CI [-0.117, -0.098], p<0.001), while the indirect effects were-0.002 (Z=-3.33, 95% CI [-0.003, -0.002], p<0.001) in the pathway of parental attachment-anhedonia-peer attachment-suicidal ideation, -0.019 (Z=-19.00, 95%CI [-0.022, -0.017], p<0.001) in the pathway of parental attachment-anhedonia-suicidal ideation, and-0.008 (Z=-7.00, 95% CI [-0.010, -0.007], p<0.001) in the pathway of parental attachment-peer attachment-suicidal ideation. Conclusion: The study suggested that parental attachment could directly influence suicidal ideation and indirectly influence suicidal ideation via anhedonia and peer attachment. The results emphasized the importance of attachment in infancy and verified the feasibility of intervention on anhedonia and peer attachment to prevent suicidal ideation.

BACKGROUND: Perioperative neurocognitive disorder (PND) is a long-term postoperative complication in elderly surgical patients. The underlying mechanism of PND is unclear, and no effective therapies are currently available. It is believed that neuroinflammation plays an important role in triggering PND. The secreted glycoprotein myeloid differentiation factor 2 (MD2) functions as an activator of the Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) inflammatory pathway, and α5GABAA receptors (α5GABAARs) are known to play a key role in regulating inflammation-induced cognitive deficits. Thus, in this study, we aimed to investigate the role of MD2 in PND and determine whether α5GABAARs are involved in the function of MD2. METHODS: Eighteen-month-old C57BL/6J mice were subjected to laparotomy under isoflurane anesthesia to induce PND. The Barnes maze was used to assess spatial reference learning and memory, and the expression of hippocampal MD2 was assayed by western blotting. MD2 expression was downregulated by bilateral injection of AAV-shMD2 into the hippocampus or tail vein injection of the synthetic MD2 degrading peptide Tat-CIRP-CMA (TCM) to evaluate the effect of MD2. Primary cultured neurons from brain tissue block containing cortices and hippocampus were treated with Tat-CIRP-CMA to investigate whether downregulating MD2 expression affected the expression of α5GABAARs. Electrophysiology was employed to measure tonic currents. For α5GABAARs intervention experiments, L-655,708 and L-838,417 were used to inhibit or activate α5GABAARs, respectively. RESULTS: Surgery under inhaled isoflurane anesthesia induced cognitive impairments and elevated the expression of MD2 in the hippocampus. Downregulation of MD2 expression by AAV-shMD2 or Tat-CIRP-CMA improved the spatial reference learning and memory in animals subjected to anesthesia and surgery. Furthermore, Tat-CIRP-CMA treatment decreased the expression of membrane α5GABAARs and tonic currents in CA1 pyramidal neurons in the hippocampus. Inhibition of α5GABAARs by L-655,708 alleviated cognitive impairments after anesthesia and surgery. More importantly, activation of α5GABAARs by L-838,417 abrogated the protective effects of Tat-CIRP-CMA against anesthesia and surgery-induced spatial reference learning and memory deficits. CONCLUSIONS: MD2 contributes to the occurrence of PND by regulating α5GABAARs in aged mice, and Tat-CIRP-CMA is a promising neuroprotectant against PND.

OBJECTIVE: To sequentially track mandibular defect repair by using radiographic and histological techniques, so as to compare repair patterns of sensory denervated versus innervated mandibles. DESIGN: Forty Sprague-Dawley rats were subjected to unilateral inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) axotomy and bilateral 3 mm full-thickness circular osteotomy of their mandibles. Micro-CT and histological staining were applied to track the repair process of the mandibular defects at 1, 2, 4, and 8 weeks after surgery. RESULTS: The bone volume of both sides increased by 2 weeks post-operation, and then gradually decreased. The new bone volumes of the axotomy side were significantly less than that of the sham side at 1, 2, and 4 weeks post-surgery, whereas no significant differences were detected at 8 weeks post-surgery. Meanwhile, there were no significant differences in bone mineral density between the two sides during repair. Noteworthy, the repaired bone remained more vertically than horizontally aligned throughout the repair process. CONCLUSION: IAN axotomy decreases the quantity of bone calluses during the early stage of mandibular defect repair, but with no effect on the degree of mineralization. The shape of the defect area appeared to be aligned with the direction of local mechanical force produced by masticatory muscles.

Present study was focus on the pollution control aspect of gaseous mitigation and heavy metal passivation as well as their associated bacterial communities driven by apple tree branch biochar (BB) during sheep manure composting. Six treatment was performed with distinct concentration of BB from 0%, 2.5%, 5%, 7.5%, 10%, and 12.5% as T1 to T6. Compared with compost without additive, biochar-based composting recorded faster thermophilic process (4thd) and longer duration (12-14d), lower gaseous emission in terms of ammonia (5.37-10.29 g), nitrous oxide (0.12-0.47 g) and methane (4.38-30.29 g). Notably highest temperature (65.3 â„ƒ) and active thermophilic duration (14d), minimized gaseous volatilization were detected in 10%BB composting. Aspect of non-degradability and enrichment-concentration properties of heavy metals, the total copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) were increased (from initial 12.71-17.91 to final 16.36-29.36 mg/kg and 107.39-146.58-161.48-211.91 mg/kg). In view of available diethylene triamine pentacetic acid (DTPA) extractable form, DTPA-Cu and DTPA-Zn from 4.29 to 6.57 and 31.66-39.32 mg/kg decreased to 3.75-4.82 and 23.43-40.54 mg/kg, especially the maximized passivation rate of 46.95% and 56.27% were present in 10%BB composting. Additionally, bacterial diversity of biochar-based composting was increased (1817-2310 OTUs) than control (1686 OTUs) and dominant by Firmicutes (52.75%), Bacteroidetes (28.41%) and Actinobacteriota (13.98%). Validated 10% biochar-based composting is the optimal option for effectively control environmental pollution to obtain hygienic composting.

ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter proteins are a gene super-family in plants and play vital roles in growth, development, and response to abiotic and biotic stresses. The ABC transporters have been identified in crop plants such as rice and buckwheat, but little is known about them in soybean. Soybean is an important oil crop and is one of the five major crops in the world. In this study, 255 ABC genes that putatively encode ABC transporters were identified from soybean through bioinformatics and then categorized into eight subfamilies, including 7 ABCAs, 52 ABCBs, 48 ABCCs, 5 ABCDs, 1 ABCEs, 10 ABCFs, 111 ABCGs, and 21 ABCIs. Their phylogenetic relationships, gene structure, and gene expression profiles were characterized. Segmental duplication was the main reason for the expansion of the GmABC genes. Ka/Ks analysis suggested that intense purifying selection was accompanied by the evolution of GmABC genes. The genome-wide collinearity of soybean with other species showed that GmABCs were relatively conserved and that collinear ABCs between species may have originated from the same ancestor. Gene expression analysis of GmABCs revealed the distinct expression pattern in different tissues and diverse developmental stages. The candidate genes GmABCB23, GmABCB25, GmABCB48, GmABCB52, GmABCI1, GmABCI5, and GmABCI13 were responsive to Al toxicity. This work on the GmABC gene family provides useful information for future studies on ABC transporters in soybean and potential targets for the cultivation of new germplasm resources of aluminum-tolerant soybean.

The objective of this present study was to understand the distribution patterns of various forms of soil phosphorus (P) and the biotic and abiotic factors affecting the soil P fractions under long-term cover crops. Here, we investigated the characteristics of soil P forms, community structure of P-solubilizing bacteria (using 16S rRNA) and the related enzyme activity under clean tillage (CT), 14 years of white clover (WC, Trifolium repens L.) and orchard grass (OG, Dactylis glomerata L.) cover crops in a rain-fed apple orchard on the Weibei Loess Plateau, China. Relative to CT treatment, long-term cover crops enhanced the bioavailability of soil P by increasing the contents of total phosphorus (TP), microbial phosphorus (MBP), organic phosphorus (Po) and certain forms of inorganic phosphorus (e.g. Al-P, Ca2-P, Ca8-P and Fe-P) in the surface soil, in addition, WC treatment also increase the available P (AP) contents in the topsoil. A redundant analysis (RDA) showed that soil organic matter (SOM), NH4+-N and pH were the key environmental factors affecting the morphological changes of soil P. In addition, the effects of long-term cover crops on soil P forms were mainly concentrated in the topsoil, and the WC treatment had a greater impact on soil P composition than the OG treatment. Interestingly, long-term cover crops effectively increased the abundances of P-solubilizing bacteria, such as Streptomyces, Sphingomonas, Nocardioides and Haliangium, and enhanced the alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity. Overall, long-term cover crops were an effective strategy to activate soil P as they improve the soil environment.

This study aimed to explore the impact of environmental factors such as latitude, altitude, family socioeconomic status (SES), and level of urbanization on overweight and obesity (ow/ob) in children and adolescents. The participants comprised 26,120 children and adolescents aged 10-18 from 16 provinces in China. Differences in the prevalence of ow/ob under different environmental conditions were evaluated by the chi-square test. The influence of various environmental factors on ow/ob was obtained by logistic regression analysis. We found that (1) the prevalence of ow/ob fell between from 19.2% to 11.9% at 10 years old and from 13.8% to 6% at 18 years old; (2) latitude, family SES, income, and urbanization level are positively correlated with the prevalence of ow/ob; and (3) altitude has a negative correlation with the prevalence of ow/ob. The prevalence of ow/ob decreased with age in children and adolescents aged 10-18, and the risk of ow/ob showed significant differences in latitude, altitude, family SES level, gross domestic product (GDP), and level of urbanization.

There is increasing evidence that cardiorespiratory endurance (CRE) is declining among Chinese children and youth. The 20-meter shuttle run test (20-m SRT) is considered the most effective and widely used field-based measurement of CRE for children and youth worldwide. However, there have been few attempts to set 20-m SRT norms for Chinese children and youth. We aimed to develop sex- and age-specific 20-m SRT norms for Chinese children and youth, and compare them with international standards. Participants were 69,960 healthy children and youth aged 9-17 years from six geographical areas of China, selected using a stratified cluster random sampling method. Sex- and age-specific 20-m SRT percentiles and curves were extracted for four common 20-m SRT metrics (laps, completed stages/minutes, speed at the last complete stage, estimated peak oxygen uptake). We also estimated the prevalence of healthy CRE according to the interim international cut-points (42 mL.kg-1min-1 for boys, 35 mL·kg·1min-1 for girls). Chinese boys consistently outperformed girls, while more girls (86.4%) exhibited healthy CRE than boys (67.1%). Younger children and youth were more likely to meet the standards compared with the older, regardless of sex. Chinese children and youth underperformed international norms by 0.85% for boys and 3.1% for girls. The performance indicator (z-score) of Chinese children and youth was -0.01, indicating that 20-m SRT performance was worse than the international mean. The sex differences were also higher for international than Chinese students. This study provided national sex- and age-specific 20-m SRT Chinese norms, offering a valuable tool for screening, monitoring and identifying target groups for future interventions and early prevention of cardiovascular risk factors.

Both sedentary behavior (SB) and physical activity (PA) are associated with cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and independent of each other. Due to the limited time during school for children and adolescents, it is necessary to explore the isotemporal substitution of SB for PA on CRF.A total 536 eligible participants selected from the 7 traditional administrative regions of China were included in this study. The outcome was CRF, determined using a 20-meter shuttle run test, and exposures were SB, light physical activity (LPA), and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) measured with accelerometers. We analyzed the cross-sectional associations of substituting SB with LPA, MVPA, and combinations of LPA and MVPA with CRF, using an isotemporal substitution model.Reallocating SB into MVPA was associated with higher CRF for male (P < .01) and female (P < .01) children and female adolescents (P < .05). In the mixed redistribution, the ratio of LPA to MVPA for male children and female adolescents started from 16:4 and 14:6, respectively, tended toward improvements in CRF. For female children, regardless of the ratio of LPA to MVPA, it was always associated with higher CRF.Reallocating SB into MVPA isotemporally was positively associated with CRF for male and female children and female adolescents but not for male adolescents. MVPA is the key factor to improve CRF when combinations of LPA and MVPA replace SB. The combined approach can provide basis for the selection of target and monitoring variables in intervention studies, and has more flexible choices for improving CRF that are more consistent with the daily PA habits of children and adolescents.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Cesarean scar pregnancy (CSP) is a rare type of ectopic pregnancy, and a significant concern in the management of this condition is the control and prevention of bleeding. We aimed to determine the efficacy and value of an indwelling, intrauterine Foley balloon catheter in controlling and preventing intraoperative and postoperative bleeding in patients with CSP. DESIGN: Retrospective case series. SETTING: University-affiliated hospital. PATIENTS: Between January 1, 2015 and May 31, 2017, 70 patients presented with CSP. INTERVENTIONS: All patients underwent uterine curettage under hysteroscopic guidance and ultrasound monitoring. Patients were then assigned to 2 groups: the study group, with an indwelling Foley balloon catheter placed in the uterine cavity during surgery and retained for 24 to 48 hours, and the control group, without catheter placement. Data were collected to compare the 2 groups in terms of intraoperative and postoperative complications, surgical time, and status of menstruation resumption. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: The average daily volume of postoperative blood loss during the first 3 postoperative days in the study group was 23.1 mL compared with 31.5 mL observed in the control group (p = .041). Moreover, the study group had significantly shorter average duration of bleeding (p = .027) and fewer menstruation abnormalities than the control group. Uterine ultrasonography performed after resumption of menstruation showed that none of the enrolled patients had any intrauterine abnormalities. CONCLUSIONS: The use of an indwelling, intrauterine Foley balloon catheter has positive results in the management of CSP.

This meta-analysis of overweight and obesity (ow/ob) among children and adolescents in China from 1991 to 2015 provides a reference for promoting the healthy development of children and adolescents. The studies were retrieved from the China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang, and PubMed databases for the period from January 1991 to January 2018. The data were combined and analyzed, and the combined effect magnitude odds ratio and the 95% confidence interval were calculated. Publication bias was determined using Stata/SE12.0. We found that (1) the prevalence of ow/ob increased from 5.0% and 1.7% in 1991-1995 to 11.7% and 6.8% in 2011-2015, respectively, and the overweight rate was the greatest in 2006-2010; (2) from 1991 to 2015, the prevalence of ow/ob was greater in urban areas than in rural areas; (3) compared with girls, boys were more likely to be ow/ob; and (4) the prevalence rates of ow and ob were greater in infancy than in other growth stages, with values of 11.7% and 7.0%, respectively. The prevalence of ow/ob among Chinese children and adolescents showed significant differences based on region, sex, and age. An overall upward trend was observed that decreased slightly from 2011 to 2015.

MYB transcription factors have been demonstrated to play key regulatory roles in plant growth, development and abiotic stress response. However, knowledge concerning the involvement of rice MYB genes in salinity and drought stress resistance are largely unknown. In the present study, we cloned and characterized the OsMYB6 gene, which was induced by drought and salinity stress. Subcellular localization of OsMYB6-YFP fusion protein in protoplast cells indicated that OsMYB6 was localized in the nucleus. Overexpression of OsMYB6 in rice did not suggest a negative effect on the growth and development of transgenic plants, but OsMYB6-overexpressing plants showed increased tolerance to drought and salt stress compared with wild-type plants, as are evaluated by higher proline content, higher CAT and SOD activities, lower REL and MDA content in transgenic plants under drought and salt stress conditions. In addition, the expression of abiotic stress-responsive genes were significantly higher in OsMYB6 transgenic plants than that in wild-type plants under drought and salt stress conditions. These results indicate that OsMYB6 gene functions as a stress-responsive transcription factor which plays a positive regulatory role in response to drought and salt stress resistance, and may be used as a candidate gene for molecular breeding of salt-tolerant and drought-tolerant crop varieties.

The dysregulation of long non­coding RNAs (lncRNAs) is associated with cancer development. The present study profiled differentially expressed lncRNAs in ovarian cancer (OC) versus normal ovarian tissues (NT) and investigated their potential functions in gene expression. OC tissues from 30 patients and NT specimens from 20 non­tumor patients were collected, and 5 cases of tumor and NT were subjected to lncRNA and mRNA microarray analysis. Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway analyses were performed. Reverse transcription­quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT­qPCR) was used to verify microarray data in all 30 cases. There were 2,870 differentially expressed lncRNAs (795 upregulated and 2,075 downregulated) and 2,658 differentially expressed mRNAs (1,014 upregulated and 1,644 downregulated) in OC. A total of 4 upregulated and 4 downregulated lncRNAs were validated using RT­qPCR. The data demonstrated that, with the exception of ENST00000453838 and ENST00000505048, the lncRNAs were consistent with the microarray data. Another differentially expressed lncRNA (BC041954) was assessed using independent tissue samples, and results further supported the microarray data. Moreover, GO analysis showed that the upregulated genes were involved in the 'development of the cell anatomical structure' (GO: 0048856; P=5.46x10­6), 'embryo and system development' and 'multicellular organismal development' in biological processes. By contrast, the downregulated genes were involved in 'gene expression' (GO: 0010476; P=1.81x10­6), 'nitrogen compound metabolic process', 'kidney development' and the 'cellular nitrogen compound metabolic process'. These differentially expressed lncRNAs could be classified into four classes, namely, the enhancer lncRNA nearby coding gene, HOX cluster, long­intergenic non­coding RNAs (lincRNAs) nearby coding gene and Rinn lincRNAs. Coding­non­coding gene co­expression network analysis showed the interregulation of lncRNAs and mRNAs in OC development. In conclusion, dysregulated lncRNA and mRNA expression could promote OC development. Further study may validate a number as OC markers and provide novel insights into ovarian cancer biology.

Injectable polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) bone cement is alluring because it allows a minimally invasive surgical approach, reducing both the cost of treatment and patient discomfort. However, several documented drawbacks have necessitated the design of a more versatile version with adorable properties for future application. In this study, to amend the bulk behavior of PMMA cement, we synthesized a modified version by combining PMMA with quaternized chitosan (N-(2-hydroxy)propyl-3-trimethylammonium chitosan chloride, HTCC)-based hydrogels loaded with nanosized hydroxyapatite (Nano-HA). Then, the physicochemical properties, antimicrobial properties, remineralization capacity and mechanical performance changes under imitated physiological conditions were tested for these cements using a type K thermocouple, scanning electron microscope (SEM), microcomputed tomography (µ-CT), calcium ion test kit and mechanical compression tests. The results demonstrated that the HTCC-GP thermosensitive hydrogel generated interconnected pores, lower the Tmax value, lengthened the working time, developed appropriate mechanical properties and imparted excellent antibacterial activity to the cement. The Nano-HA particles engendered improved biomineralization ability of the cements without adversely influencing the mechanical performance. Hence, these results indicated that the injectable and multifunctional cement resulting from the p-PMMA/HTCC-GP/Nano-HA combination grips rosy prospect for future applications in bone reconstruction.

A new isoquinoline, 1,5-dihydroxy-4-methoxyisoquinoline (1), was obtained from Scolopendra subspinipes mutilans. Compound 1 showed moderate cytotoxicity on tumour cells with IC50 values ranging from 13 to 26 µm against five esophageal squamous cancer cells whereas low cytotoxicity against normal human esophageal epithelial cells. Isoquinoline ring oxidized at C(1), C(4), and C(5) can enhance its cytotoxicity. In addition, compound 1 showed potent inhibitory effect (inhibition rate > 50% at 13 µm) on cell migration in human umbilical vein endothelial cells. This article mainly studies the structure and activity of 1, and more modification of 1 as a potential anticancer agent.

RATIONALE: Accessory spleen (Heterotopic/Ectopic) or splenunculus has been attributed to the failure of the fusion of splenic primordial buds-derived from dorsal mesentery (mesodermal mesenchymal in origin) during the 5th week of embryonic organogenesis or to an extreme degree of splenic lobulation with pinching off of the spleen tissue. The most common locations for accessory spleens are the hilum of the spleen followed by adjacent to the tail of the pancreas. The patients usually present with no clinical symptoms. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 49-year-old female undergoing a routine medical examination- Abdominal Ultrasound revealed a pancreatic mass. She was admitted into the hospital for 3 days and was put under observation. There are no specific findings during the physical examination or any related abnormalities in the laboratory investigations. DIAGNOSIS: Heterotopic spleen-an intrapancreatic accessory spleen (IPAS). INTERVENTIONS: Noncontrast CT of the abdomen demonstrated a soft tissue mass with a clear boundary in the tail of the pancreas. On contrast examination-the arterial phase, it was markedly enhanced, homogenous congruity similar to that of spleen; on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-T2WI with fat suppressed sequence, it demonstrated a regular round clear edged mass in the pancreatic tail. On Diffusion Weighted Imaging (DWI), a mass with a clear boundary was observed within the parenchyma of the pancreatic tail. The mass showed a high signal on noncontrast MRI, while on contrast examination, the mass showed a strengthening signal with homogenous enhancement as that of spleen. OUTCOMES: Heterotopic spleen presentation is a very rare asymptomatic clinical condition. During the routine medical examination - it presents mostly as a solitary benign round or oval mass with a clear boundary or as an ectopic focus, either in the pancreatic tail or adjacent to the pancreatic appendage, as an incidental finding. On Contrast CT, it shows as a homogeneously enhanced density- a strengthening mass lesion, in the pancreatic tail, similar to that of spleen. LESSONS: Our case emphasizes the importance of recognizing IPAS radiological characteristics and typical variations in its presentation in an asymptomatic patient that could help the personnel to differentiate it from other mass lesions. Thus, recognizing imaging findings on Plain CT, Contrast CT and MRI plays a key role to form a conclusive diagnosis of an accessory spleen, which has to be clinically associated. So, surgeons should consider IPAS as a differential for which unnecessary resection and an unintended surgical procedure can be avoided.

Two new isoquinoline alkaloids 1-2 and seven known compounds 3-9 were isolated from the ethanol extract of centipede Scolopendra subspinipes mutilans L. Koch. The structures were elucidated by a combination of spectroscopic analyses including 1D and 2D NMR, and HRESIMS. Compounds 1-2 exhibited good cytotoxicity with IC50 values ranging from 1.19 to 31.28µM against six human cancer cell lines and low cytotoxicity against human normal liver L-02 cell lines, suggesting that compounds 1-2 had high specific cytotoxicity on human cancer cell lines. Further analyses showed that compounds 1-2 inhibited U87 cells proliferation by arresting cell cycle progress at G0/G1 phase and inducing apoptosis through loss of mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), activation of caspase 9/3 and down-regulation of the Bcl-2/Bax protein ratio. The results suggest that compounds 1-2 induce apoptosis in U87 cells through the mitochondria apoptosis pathway, and they deserve further research as potential anti-glioma cancer agents.
