RESUMO

The Zintl compound Mg3Sb2 is a promising thermoelectric material with Earth-abundant components. Compared to its n-type counterpart, p-type Mg3Sb2 reveals lower dimensionless figure of merit (zT), principally due to the inferior electronic properties. Herein, p-type Mg3Sb2 materials codoped with Li and Cd have been synthesized via a ball milling plus hot pressing method, and their thermoelectric properties are systematically investigated within the temperature range 300-773 K. Li is found to be an effective hole dopant, which leads to a zT of 0.46 at 773 K in Mg2.99Li0.01Sb2 that doubles the zT of Mg3Sb2. Additional Cd doping further increases carrier mobility ascribed to the weakened polar covalent bonding and diminishes the lattice thermal conductivity simultaneously due to the introduced atomic mass contrast between Cd and Mg. Eventually, the optimized power factor combined with the reduced thermal conductivity has significantly improved the thermoelectric performance of p-type Mg3Sb2, with Mg2.69Li0.01Cd0.5Sb2 achieving a maximum zT of ∼0.68 at 773 K and an average zTave of ∼0.32 over 300-773 K that compare very favorably to those of pristine Mg3Sb2. This study demonstrates that (Li, Cd) codoping is an effective strategy to enhance the thermoelectric properties of p-type Mg3Sb2 materials.

RESUMO

Investigating the composition of food sources with stable isotope method can provide direct evidence for the top-down control in the coastal wetland. In this study, we examined food source and feeding habit of Helice tientsinensis of common reed (Phragmites australis) vegetation in high marsh of Yellow River Delta. The results showed that the density of crab was (5.5±1.5) ind·m-2, with the behavior of climbing P. australis to feed on the leaves at night. Under the same indoor experimental condition, H. tientsinensis showed feeding preference on fresh leaves of P. aus-tralis. The stable isotope food source analysis showed that the leaves of P. australis were one of the important food sources of H. tientsinensis in the field. There were temporal variations in the proportion of fresh leaves [May: (6.4±4.9)%, July: (5.8±4.9)%, September: (12.5±8.8)%] and dead leaves [May: (12.4±7.8)%, July: (15.5±9.9)%, September: (15.1±9.4)%]. Therefore, H. tientsinensis could inhibit P. australis's growth and affect litter decomposition through feeding disturbance behavior.

RESUMO

High incidence of patellofemoral pain and patellofemoral joint osteoarthritis was found following anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. The unstability of patellofemoral joint might be an important contribution factor. This study was designed to define the relationship between the unstability of patellofemoral joint and quadriceps femoris atrophy. Twenty patients underwent MRI scan before ACL reconstruction and every two weeks after surgery, until 12 weeks. The merchant's patellar congruence angle, lateral inclination angle, and quadriceps femoris muscle cross-sectional area were measured and the relationship between the changes of angles and the ratio of quadriceps femoris atrophy was studied by multiple regression analysis. Significant quadriceps femoris atrophy was observed after ACL reconstruction during the follow-up period of 12 weeks. The merchant's patellar congruence angle and lateral inclination angle significantly changed after surgery. The alterations of the merchant's patellar congruence angle were significantly correlated with the atrophy ratio of vastus medialis (coefficient=-15.76) and vastus lateralis (coefficient=8.35) during the follow-up period of 12 weeks. The alterations of lateral inclination angle were significantly correlated with the atrophy ratio of vastus medialis (coefficient=20.62), vastus lateralis (coefficient=-11.38) and rectus femoris (coefficient=-0.469) during the follow-up period 12 weeks. To sum up, ACL reconstruction can alleviate the dysfunction of patellofemoral joint to a certain extent. But, the unbalanced atrophy of quadriceps femoris once again destroyed the stability of patellofemoral joint following the operation, which might be one cause of patellofemoral joint pain and early onset of osteoarthritis after ACL reconstruction. So, rehabilitation training that focuses on quadriceps femoris especially the vastus medialis shortly following operation is suggested.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The etiology of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is multifactorial, complex and not fully characterized yet. MicroRNAs (miRNAs or miRs) have been found to contribute to the development and progression of NPC. Here, we aimed to investigate the putative role of miR-129-5p in NPC lymphangiogenesis and lymph node metastasis (LNM), including the involvement of its target gene ZIC2 and the Hedgehog signaling pathway. METHODS: The expression of miR-129-5p and ZIC2 in primary NPC tissues was assessed using RT-qPCR and Western blot analyses, followed by LNM and lymph vessel density (LVD) correlation analyses. A direct interaction between miR-129-5p and ZIC2 was verified using a dual-luciferase reporter assay. Gain- and loss-of-function experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of miR-129-5p and ZIC2 expression on NPC cell invasion, migration and proliferation in vitro, as well as on LDV and LNM in nude mice in vivo. Additionally, RT-qPCR and Western blot analyses were performed to determine the expression levels of Hedgehog signaling pathway-related factors. RESULTS: We found that ZIC2 was highly expressed, and miR-129-5p was lowly expressed, in primary NPC tissues. In addition, we found that miR-129-5p can directly bind to and reduce ZIC2 expression. LVD was found to be negatively correlated with miR-129-5p and to be positively correlated with ZIC2 expression. Concomitantly, we found that miR-129-5p abrogated activation of the Hedgehog signaling pathway via ZIC2 targeting, leading to suppression of NPC cell invasion, migration and proliferation in vitro as well as suppression of LNM and LVD in vivo. CONCLUSIONS: From our data we conclude that miR-129-5p, by decreasing ZIC2 expression, may inhibit NPC lymphangiogenesis and LNM through suppression of the Hedgehog signaling pathway.

RESUMO

Cancer immunotherapy (also known as immuno-oncology), a promising anti-cancer strategy by harnessing the body's own immune system against cancer, has emerged as the "fifth therapeutic pilla" in the field of cancer treatment since surgery, chemotherapy, radiation and targeted therapy. Clinical efficacy of several immunotherapies has been demonstrated in clinical settings, however, only a small subset of patients exhibit dramatic or durable responses, with the highest reported frequency about 10-40% from single-agent PD-L1/PD-1 inhibitors, suggesting the urgent need of consistent objective response biomarkers for monitoring therapeutic response accurately, predicting therapeutic efficacy and selecting responders. Key elements of therapeutic responses to cancer immunotherapies contain the cancer cell response and the alternation of inherent immunological characteristics. Here, we documents the literature regarding imaging the key elements of therapeutic responses to cancer immunotherapies using PET. We discussed PET imaging approaches according to different response mechanisms underlying diverse immune-therapeutic categories, and also highlight the ongoing efforts to identify novel immunotherapeutic PET imaging biomarkers. In this article, we show that PET imaging of the key elements of therapeutic responses to cancer immunotherapies using PET can allow for more precise prediction, earlier therapy response monitoring, and improved management. However, all of these strategies need more preclinical study and clinical validation before further development as imaging indicators of immune response.

RESUMO

High risk neuroblastoma often recurs, even with aggressive treatments. Clinical evidence suggests that proliferative activities are predictive of poor outcomes. This report describes syntheses, characterization, and biological properties of theranostic guanidines that target norepinephrine transporter and undergo intracellular processing, and subsequently their catabolites are efficiently incorporated into DNA of proliferating neuroblastoma cells. Radioactive guanidines are synthesized from 5-radioiodo-2'-deoxyuridine, a molecular radiotherapy platform with clinically proven minimal toxicities and DNA-targeting properties. The transport of radioactive guanidines into neuroblastoma cells is active as indicated by the competitive suppression of cellular uptake by meta-iodobenzylguanidine. The rate of intracellular processing and DNA uptake is influenced by the agent's catabolic stability and cell population doubling times. The radiotoxicity is directly proportional to DNA uptake and duration of exposure. Biodistribution of 5-[125I]iodo-3'- O-(ε-guanidinohexanoyl)-2'-deoxyuridine in a mouse neuroblastoma model shows significant tumor retention of radioactivity. Neuroblastoma xenografts regress in response to the clinically achievable doses of this agent.

RESUMO

Small-for-gestational age (SGA) human newborns have an increased risk of hyperphagia and obesity, as well as a spectrum of neurologic and neurobehavioral abnormalities. We have shown that the SGA hypothalamic (appetite regulatory site) neuroprogenitor cells (NPCs) exhibit reduced proliferation and neuronal differentiation. DNA methylation (DNA methyltransferase; DNMT1) regulates neurogenesis by maintaining NPC proliferation and suppressing premature differentiation. Once differentiation ensues, DNMT1 preferentially promotes neuronal and inhibits astroglial fate. We hypothesized that the programmed dysfunction of NPC proliferation and differentiation in SGA offspring is epigenetically mediated via DNMT1. Pregnant rats received either ad libitum food (Control) or were 50% food-restricted to create SGA offspring. Primary hypothalamic NPCs from 1 day old SGA and Controls newborns were cultured and transfected with nonspecific or DNMT1-specific siRNA. NPC proliferation and protein expression of specific markers of NPC (nestin), neuroproliferative transcription factor (Hes1), neurons (Tuj1) and astrocytes (GFAP) were determined. Under basal conditions, SGA NPCs exhibited decreased DNMT1 and reduced proliferation and differentiation, as compared to Controls. In both SGA and Controls, DNMT1 siRNA in complete media inhibited NPC proliferation, consistent with reduced expression of nestin and Hes1. In differentiation media, DNMT1 siRNA decreased expression of Tuj1 but increased GFAP. In vivo data replicated these findings. In SGA offspring, impaired neurogenesis is epigenetically mediated, in part, via reduction in DNMT1 expression and suppression of Hes1 resulting in NPC differentiation. It is likely that the maturation of regions beyond the hypothalamus (e.g., cerebral cortex, hippocampus) may be impacted, contributing to poor cognitive and neurobehavioral competency in SGA offspring.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The skin marking method (SMM) and bow-form-ruler marking method (BFRM) are two commonly used patient marking methods in mainland China. This study aims to evaluate SMM and BFRM by comparing the inter-fraction setup errors from using these two methods together with vacuum cushion immobilization in patients underwent radiotherapy for different treatment sites. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighteen patients diagnosed with pelvic, abdominal and thoracic malignant tumors (with 6 patients per treatment site) were enrolled in this prospective study. All patients were immobilized with vacuum cushion. Each patient was marked by both SMM and BFRM before computed tomography (CT) simulation. Target location was verified by cone beam CT images with displacements assessed prior to each sampled treatment session. The localization errors in three translational and three rotational directions were recorded and analyzed. RESULTS: Images from 108 fractions in 18 patients produced 324 translational and 324 rotational comparisons for SMM and BFRM. The setup errors of all treatment sites showed no difference in two marking methods in any directions (p > 0.05). In subgroups of treatment site analysis, SMM significantly lessened the lateral and yaw setup errors compared to BFRM in the pelvic sites (0.39±1.85 mm vs -1.28±1.13 mm, p < 0.01 and -0.19±0.59° vs -0.61±0.59°, p < 0.05). However, in the abdominal subgroup, BFRM was superior to SMM for reduced vertical errors (0.17±2.73 mm vs 2.28±3.16 mm, p < 0.05). For the underweight or obese patients (with Body Mass Index, BMI < 18.5 or BMI≥24), SMM resulted in less yaw errors compared to BFRM (-0.05±0.38° vs -0.43±0.48°, p < 0.05). No significant difference between SMM and BFRM in setup errors of normal weighted patients (18.5≤BMI < 24) was observed for all three studied treatment sites. CONCLUSIONS: This study shows no significant difference in patient setup errors for various treatment sites between SMM and BFRM in general. SMM may be suitable for the pelvic tumor and patients with BMI < 18.5 or BMI≥24, while BFRM is recommended for the abdominal tumor sites.

RESUMO

Background: 'Bianliang ziyu', a famous chrysanthemum variety commonly planted in Kaifeng, China, is often consumed by local residents. However, the hepatoprotective effects of Bianliang ziyu and their underlying mechanisms are not clear. Objective: In this study, we investigated the hepatoprotective and antioxidative effects of Bianliang ziyu extract (BZE) on liver injury and explored its molecular mechanisms. Design: Sprague-Dawley rats were administered BZE by intragastric administration for 8-9 days, and then alcohol or carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) was administered by gavage to induce acute liver injury. The activities of serum alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, superoxide dismutase, and malondialdehyde in the rats were measured, and the liver of each rat was examined for histopathological changes. In vitro, HL-7702 cells were pretreated with BZE for 24 h and then exposed to 30 mmol•L-1 acetaminophen (APAP) for 12 h. The survival rate of the cells and the alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase activities were determined. Then, we investigated the effects of BZE on oxidative stress, apoptosis, and the activation of nuclear factor erythroid-2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) signaling in HL-7702 cells induced by APAP. Results: The results showed that BZE prevented alcohol-, CCl4-, and APAP-induced liver injury and suppressed hepatic oxidative stress in vitro and in vivo. BZE was also observed to significantly inhibit the reduction of mitochondrial membrane potential and regulate the expression of Bcl-2, Bax and Caspase-3 in APAP-induced HL-7702 cells. In addition, BZE significantly promoted nuclear translocation and the expression of Nrf2 as well as its downstream gene hemeoxygenase-1 (HO-1) in vitro. Furthermore, the findings showed that Nrf2 siRNA reversed the effects of BZE on cell survival and apoptosis-related protein expression in APAP-induced HL-7702 cells. Conclusions: BZE plays an important role in preventing hepatotoxicity by inhibiting oxidative stress and apoptosis through activation of Nrf2 signaling. BZE could be developed as an effective functional food for protecting the liver.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Preoperative supplementation with immunonutrients, including arginine and n-3 fatty acids, has been shown in a number of systematic reviews to reduce infectious complications in patients who have undergone gastrointestinal surgery. Limited information, however, is available on the benefits of nutritional supplementation enriched with arginine and n-3 fatty acids in patients undergoing liver resection. AIM: To evaluate the effects of preoperative nutritional supplementation enriched with arginine and n-3 fatty acids on inflammatory and immunologic markers and clinical outcome in patients undergoing liver resection. METHODS: Thirty-four patients undergoing liver resection were randomized to either five days of preoperative Impact® [1020 kcal/d, immunonutrition (IMN) group], or standard care [no supplementation, standard care (STD) group]. Nutritional status was measured at study entry by subjective global assessment (SGA). Functional assessments (grip strength, fatigue and performance status) were carried out at study entry, on the day prior to surgery, and on postoperative day (POD) 7 and 30. Inflammatory and immune markers were measured at study entry, on the day prior to surgery, and POD 1, 3, 5, 7, 10 and 30. Postoperative complications were recorded prospectively until POD30. RESULTS: A total of 32 patients (17 IMN and 15 STD) were analysed. All except four patients were SGA class A. The plasma ratio of (eicosapentaenoic acid plus docosahexaenoic acid) to arachidonic acid was higher in IMN patients on the day prior to surgery and POD 1, 3, 5 and 7 (P < 0.05). Plasma interleukin (IL)-6 concentrations were elevated in the IMN group (P = 0.017 for POD7). No treatment effect was detected for functional measures, immune response (white cell count and total lymphocytes) or markers of inflammation (C-reactive protein, tumour necrosis factor-α, IL-8, IL-10). There were 10 patients with infectious complications in the IMN group and 4 in the STD group (P = 0.087). Median hospital stay was 9 (range 4-49) d in the IMN group and 8 (3-34) d in the STD group (P = 0.476). CONCLUSION: In well-nourished patients undergoing elective liver resection, this study failed to show any benefit of preoperative immunonutrition.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This study was conducted to investigate if radiotherapy improved the overall survival (OS) of patients with oligometastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). METHODS: From January 2012 to August 2015, 323 NSCLC patients with distant metastasis were administered radiotherapy. Ninety-five patients with oligometastatic NSCLC who were sensitive to the initial chemotherapy were treated with radiotherapy for the residual lesions. Initial treatment consisted of four to six cycles of induction chemotherapy. If the patients responded to the initial treatment without developing new metastases, the residual sites were radiated at a total dose of 56-66 Gy, including the primary and metastatic sites. OS, progression-free survival, and sites of progression were assessed. The Kaplan-Meier method was used to estimate the OS and progression-free survival probabilities. RESULTS: The median survival of the whole cohort was 15 months (95% confidence interval 6-40) and the median time to progression was 11 months (95% confidence interval 4-24). Sixty-seven patients had died by the end of follow-up. The one-year and two-year OS rates were 58% and 23%, respectively. Patients progressed either with brain (n = 14), bone (n = 11), lung (n = 10), liver (n = 7), adrenal gland (n = 5), or seven other sites of metastases (n = 3). Acute grade III esophageal toxicity was observed in 17 patients (18%) and grade III pulmonary toxicity in seven patients (7%). CONCLUSION: Oligometastatic non-progressive NSCLC patients may benefit from aggressive radiotherapy to the residual lesions with acceptable toxicity after systemic chemotherapy.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the curative efficacy of self-made fine-tuning setting in the process of femoral distal implantation of intramedullary nail. METHODS: From October 2015 to October 2017, 66 cases of femoral shaft fracture were treated with anterograde interlocking intramedullary nail including 45 males and 21 females with a mean age of(37.21±11.18) years old. Among them, 36 cases were treated with the manufacture's aiming device and self-made fine-tuning setting (research group), other 30 cases were treated with the manufacture's aiming device(control group). The mean operation time, the times of C-arm scan in surgery, the post-operation complications and the fracture union were observed and compared in two groups. RESULTS: Sixty-two cases acquired 8 to 15 months with a mean time of 12.4 months follow-up visit. The post-operation complications and the fracture union between the two groups had no significant difference(P>0.05), the mean operation time and the times of C-arm scan in surgery had statistically significant difference(P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Self-made fine-tuning setting in the process of femoral interblocking intramedullary nail could shorten operation time and reduce the the times of C-arm scan.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Injured vaginal infection is detrimental to women. A curcumin hydrogel was studied for local treatment of injured vaginal infection. METHODS: Curcumin solid dispersions (CSDs) were prepared from polyvinyl pyrrolidone and characterized by differential scanning calorimetry and an X-ray diffraction method. An in situ hydrogel CSD hydrogel (CSDG) was prepared with CSD/poloxamers and characterized. In vitro curcumin release and antibacterial effects of CSDs, CSDGs and curcumin were compared. The therapeutic effect of the CSDGs and Lincomycin/Lidocaine Gel was explored after intravaginal administration on the injured rat vaginal infection models. KEY FINDINGS: Curcumin was amorphous in CSDs where curcumin rapidly released in simulated vaginal fluids. However, CSDGs showed sustained release. CSDGs quickly formed gels in the vagina. CSDGs showed high in vivo anti-Escherichia coli or Staphylococcus aureus effect though weak in vitro effect. The recovery of vaginal microenvironment and improvement of intravaginal Lactobacillus growth may be the major reason. Furthermore, CSDGs remarkably improved vaginal wound healing by alleviating inflammation and restoring vaginal epidermal tissues compared with the Lincomycin/Lidocaine Gel. CONCLUSION: CSDGs are a promising topical formulation for local treatment of vaginal bacterial infection and improvement of vaginal wound healing.

RESUMO

Adult brainstem gliomas belong to a rare and heterogeneous group of brain tumors. The overall prognosis is poor; therapeutic options are limited, given the resistance to radiotherapy and the unclear role of chemotherapy/antiangiogenic therapy. Apatinib, a tyrosine kinase inhibitor that selectively inhibits the vascular endothelial growth factor receptor and mildly inhibits c-Kit, PDGFR-ß, RET, and c-SRC, has been reported to show efficacy among some patients with malignant supratentorial gliomas. However, its effect on brainstem glioma has not been reported so far. Herein, a 66-year-old man with brainstem anaplastic astrocytoma isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH) wild type was treated initially with combined radiotherapy, temozolomide, and apatinib. The patient achieved a complete response by MRI and continues to have an ongoing progression-free survival of over 8 months. To our knowledge, this is the first case report using apatinib to treat brainstem IDH wild-type anaplastic astrocytoma, displaying an excellent outcome. We also summarize cases of adult brainstem glioma treated with antiangiogenic therapy. Experiences using various regimens may improve understanding of this rare disease, and thus help physicians to seek more effective treatments for these patients.

RESUMO

To improve the drug-ability of celastrol, a series of PEGylation celastrol (PEGC) were designed and synthesized by conjugation with different kinds of polyethylene glycols (PEGs) with celastrol. Most of PEGCs could easily dissolve in water. In particular, one of them (DC1000) could be dispersed in water to form nanoparticles by self-assembly. The cytotoxic evaluation of PEGCs revealed that some of PEGCs showed more potent cytotoxicity than celastrol, and the molecular weight of PEG parts in PEGCs had apparent influence on their cytotoxic activity. Anti-tumor evaluation in vivo showed DC1000 had higher tumor inhibition rate and better safety than celastrol by intravenous administration with equivalent molar weight. These results revealed PEGylation might be an efficient and economical method to improve the water solubility and safety of celastrol and similar natural products.

RESUMO

Background: Our previous study suggested that HBO treatment attenuated neuropathic pain by inhibiting mTOR to induce autophagy in SNL neuropathic pain model. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of AKT/TSC2/mTOR pathway in SNL and autophagy and determine whether HBO treatment could relieve neuropathic pain via modulating AKT/TSC2/mTOR pathway. Materials and methods: Rats were randomly divided into sham, SNL, SNL + HBO treatment, SNL + vehicle, and SNL + AKT inhibitor groups. Neuropathic pain was induced following SNL procedure. Rats in the SNL + HBO group received HBO treatment for 7 consecutive days beginning on postoperative day 1. The SNL + vehicle group received 10 µL of 3% dimethyl sulfoxide in saline. SNL + AKT inhibitor group received 10 µL AKT inhibitor IV intrathecally. Mechanical withdrawal threshold tests were performed to evaluate mechanical hypersensitivity. AKT, p-AKT, TSC2, mTOR, p-mTOR, and LC3-II protein expressions were examined by Western blot analysis. Results: HBO reversed AKT/TSC2/mTOR upregulation induced by SNL and attenuated neuropathic pain. Intrathecal injection of AKT inhibitor IV decreased the activity of AKT/TSC2/mTOR pathway and increased LC3-II expression accompanied by analgesic effect in SNL rats. Conclusion: Taken together, our findings demonstrated AKT/TSC2/mTOR pathway was activated in SNL-induced neuropathic pain, and HBO treatment attenuated neuropathic pain via neutralizing AKT/TSC2/mTOR pathway activation.

RESUMO

Dendranthema morifolium cv. 'jinsidaju', cultivated only in Kaifeng, has been eaten for more than 1000 years. During the antioxidant-activity-guided studies on its chemistry and health care function, two new bisabolane-type sesquiterpenes, (6R,7R)-7-hydroxybisabol-2,9E,11-triene-4-one (jinsidajuol A, 1) and (6R,7R)-7-hydroxy-11-methoxybisabol-2,9E-diene-4-one (jinsidajuol B, 2), and thirteen known compounds (3-15) were isolated from the flowers. Their structures were elucidated by 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy and HRMS. 1 and 2 are the first example of bisabolane-type sesquiterpenes isolated from the genus Dendranthema. Compounds 6-8, 12 and 13 exhibited strong scavenging activities on the ABTS radical cation with IC50 3.33, 5.67, 2.00, 2.50, 5.33 µg/mL, respectively. The IC50 values of all compounds on HepG2 human hepatoma tumor cell line were higher than 50 µM.

RESUMO

Andrographolide is a main bioactive diterpene lactone in A. paniculata with anti-inflammatory activity. In this study, a series of andrographolide derivatives were synthesized and evaluated for their structure-anti-inflammatory activity relationships in vivo. Among all compounds, isoandrographolide and 14-deoxyandrographolide showed stronger anti-inflammatory activity than andrographolide. The results indicated that the introduction of tetrahydrofuran ring and cyclic olefinic bond plays an important role in enhancing the anti-inflammatory activity of andrographolide derivatives. Isoandrographolide and 14-deoxyandrographolide are potent inhibitor of inflammation.

RESUMO

A versatile method for synthesis of block copolymer nanoassemblies via initiators for continuous activator regeneration (ICAR) atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) dispersion polymerization in a low molecular weight poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) is discussed. This ICAR ATRP dispersion polymerization uses a low concentration of CuBr2 catalyst, which is stable under atmospheric conditions and is soluble in most polar solvents and employs a polymerization medium of viscous and nonvolatile PEG. Through this ICAR ATRP dispersion polymerization, various block copolymer nanoassemblies, including poly(ethylene glycol)-block-polystyrene, poly(ethylene glycol)-block-poly(methyl methacrylate), and poly(2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate)-block-poly(methyl methacrylate), have been synthesized. The parameters affecting the size and morphology of the block copolymer nanoassemblies are briefly discussed.
