RESUMO

It is reported the synthesis of self-supported zeolite foam geopolymers (ZFG) from fly ash (FA) using saturated steam. These materials could be used as porous bulk-type solid adsorbents. Characterization analyses show that the alkaline activator (AA) modulus affects the structural unit distribution in foam geopolymer (FG), which ultimately provides different chemical compositions for the nucleation of zeolites resulting in different types of zeolites. Furthermore, the pore structure of ZFGs range from micro- to the macro-range and combine the functional micro-porosity of the zeolites, the meso-porosity and the macro-porosity of the foam geopolymer. ZFGs exhibit low apparent density (approximately 355 Kg/m3) and higher compressive strength (ranging from 1.03 MPa to 2.96 MPa). The possibility of using these innovative materials as heavy metal (Pb2+) adsorbents was then evaluated. The results show that they have a great capacity for the removal of the Pb2+ (as high as 123.2 mg g-1) and high adsorption efficiency (equilibration time as fast as 60 min). The lightweight bulk-type ZFGs could be used in packed beds as membranes for easy collection, unlike granular adsorbents. Moreover, their production contributes to the elimination of polluting FA solid wastes, mitigating the environmental impact associated with this waste disposal, while decreasing production costs.

Dietary methionine restriction (MR) has been reported to extend lifespan, reduce obesity and decrease oxidative damage to mtDNA in the heart of rats, and increase endogenous hydrogen sulfide (H2S) production in the liver and blood. H2S has many potential benefits in the pathophysiology of the cardiovascular system. MR also increases the level of homocysteine (Hcy) in the liver and plasma, but elevated plasma Hcy is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the effect of MR on cardiac function and metabolic status in obese middle-aged mice and its possible mechanisms. C57BL/6J mice (aged approximately 28 weeks) were divided into six dietary groups: CON (0.86% methionine + 4% fat), CMR40 (0.52% methionine + 4% fat), CMR80 (0.17% methionine + 4% fat), HFD (0.86% methionine + 24% fat), HMR40 (0.52% methionine + 24% fat) and HMR80 (0.17% methionine + 24% fat) for 15 consecutive weeks. Our results showed that 80% MR improves systolic dysfunction in middle-aged obese mice and enhances myocardial energy metabolism. 80% MR also reduces myocardial oxidative stress and improves inflammatory response. In addition, 80% MR increased mice Hcy levels and activated remethylation and transsulfur pathways of Hcy and promoted endogenous H2S production in the heart. 40% MR has the same trend, but is not significant. Moreover 40% MR at variance with 80% MR, did not decrease the body weight in both control and high-fat diet mice. These findings suggest that MR can improve myocardial energy metabolism, reduce heart inflammation and oxidative stress by increasing cardiac H2S production, and improve cardiac dysfunction in middle-aged obese mice.

Domain adaptation tries to adapt a model trained from a source domain to a different but related target domain. Currently, prevailing methods for domain adaptation rely on either instance reweighting or feature transformation. Unfortunately, instance reweighting has difficulty in estimating the sample weights as the dimension increases, whereas feature transformation sometimes fails to make the transformed source and target distributions similar when the cross-domain discrepancy is large. In order to overcome the shortcomings of both methodologies, in this article, we model the unsupervised domain adaptation problem under the generalized covariate shift assumption and adapt the source distribution to the target distribution in a subspace by applying a distribution adaptation function. Accordingly, we propose two frameworks: Bregman-divergence-embedded structural risk minimization (BSRM) and joint structural risk minimization (JSRM). In the proposed frameworks, the subspace distribution adaptation function and the target prediction model are jointly learned. Under certain instantiations, convex optimization problems are derived from both frameworks. Experimental results on the synthetic and real-world text and image data sets show that the proposed methods outperform the state-of-the-art domain adaptation techniques with statistical significance.

IgD-Fc-Ig fusion protein, a new biological agent, is constructed by linking a segment of human IgD-Fc with a segment of human IgG1-Fc, which specifically blocks the IgD-IgDR pathway and selectively inhibits the abnormal proliferation, activation, and differentiation of T cells. In this study we investigated whether IgD-Fc-Ig exerted therapeutic effects in collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) rats. CIA rats were treated with IgD-Fc-Ig (1, 3, and 9 mg/kg) or injected with biological agents etanercept (3 mg/kg) once every 3 days for 40 days. In the PBMCs and spleen lymphocytes of CIA rats, both T and B cells exhibited abnormal proliferation; the percentages of CD3+ total T cells, CD3+CD4+ Th cells, CD3+CD4+CD25+-activated Th cells, Th1(CD4+IFN-γ+), and Th17(CD4+IL-17+) were significantly increased, whereas the Treg (CD4+CD25+Foxp3+) cell percentage was decreased. IgD-Fc-Ig administration dose-dependently decreased the indicators of arthritis; alleviated the histopathology of spleen and joint; reduced serum inflammatory cytokines levels; decreased the percentages of CD3+ total T cells, CD3+CD4+ Th cells, CD3+CD4+CD25+-activated Th cells, Th1 (CD4+IFN-γ+), and Th17(CD4+IL-17+); increased Treg (CD4+CD25+Foxp3+) cell percentage; and down-regulated the expression of key molecules in IgD-IgDR-Lck-NF-κB signaling (p-Lck, p-ZAP70, p-P38, p-NF-κB65). Treatment of normal T cells with IgD (9 µg/mL) in vitro promoted their proliferation. Co-treatment with IgD-Fc-Ig (0.1-10 µg/mL) dose-dependently decreased IgD-stimulated T cell subsets percentages and down-regulated the IgD-IgDR-Lck-NF-κB signaling. In summary, this study demonstrates that IgD-Fc-Ig alleviates CIA and regulates the functions of T cells through inhibiting IgD-IgDR-Lck-NF-κB signaling.

RESUMO

In this paper, we present a 2D/3D mixed system with high image quality based on integral imaging and a switchable diffuser element. The proposed system comprises a liquid crystal display screen, lens array, switchable diffuser element and projector. The switchable diffuser element can be controlled to present 2D/3D mixed images or 2D and 3D images independently, and can reduce the Moire fringe and black grid. In addition to the improved display quality, the proposed system has advantages of a simple structure and is low cost, which contribute to the portability and practicability.

Integral imaging is a promising three-dimensional (3D) imaging technique that captures and reconstructs light field information. Microlens arrays are usually used for the reconstruction process to display 3D scenes to the viewer. However, the inherent chromatic aberration of the microlens array reduces the viewing quality, and thus, broadband achromatic imaging remains a challenge for integral imaging. Here, we realize a silicon nitride metalens array in the visible region that can be used to reconstruct 3D optical scenes in the achromatic integral imaging for white light. The metalens array contains 60 × 60 polarization-insensitive metalenses with nearly diffraction-limited focusing. The nanoposts in each high-efficiency (measured as 47% on average) metalens are delicately designed with zero effective material dispersion and an effective achromatic refractive index distribution from 430 to 780 nm. In addition, such an achromatic metalens array is composed of only a single silicon nitride layer with an ultrathin thickness of 400 nm, making the array suitable for on-chip hybrid-CMOS integration and the parallel manipulation of optoelectronic information. We expect these findings to provide possibilities for full-color and aberration-free integral imaging, and we envision that the proposed approach may be potentially applicable in the fields of high-power microlithography, high-precision wavefront sensors, virtual/augmented reality and 3D imaging.

A new type of iron-copper-carbon (Fe-Cu-C) ternary micro-electrolysis filler was prepared with a certain proportion of iron powder, activated carbon, bentonite, copper powder, etc. The effect of the new type of micro-electrolysis filler on the simulated methyl orange dye wastewater was studied. The effects of various operational parameters, such as reaction time, initial pH value, aeration rate, filler dose and reaction temperature, on the degradation rate of methyl orange were studied to determine the optimum treatment conditions, and the micro-electrolysis filler was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The experimental results show that the degradation rate of 220 mL of simulated dye wastewater with a concentration of 100 mg/L reached 93.41% ± 2.94% after 60 mL/min of aeration, with an initial pH = 2, a dose of 45 g and 125 minutes of reaction at room temperature. The new micro-electrolysis filler has a high degradation rate for methyl orange solution, which is attributed to the iron and activated carbon particles sintered into an integrated structure, which makes the iron and carbon difficult to separate and affects the galvanic cell reaction. The addition of copper also greatly increases the transmission efficiency of electrons, which promotes the reaction. In addition, the surface iron is consumed, the adjacent carbon is stripped layer by layer, and the new micro-electrolytic filler does not easily passivate and agglomerate during its use.

Sertoli cells (SCs) are necessary for proper germ cell development and viability. Unc-51 like autophagy activating kinase (ULK1) protein kinase is an important regulator of autophagy activation. This study aims to investigate the role of autophagy promoter ULK1 on cell viability of goat SCs. Our results showed that ULK1 knockdown in goat SCs decreased autophagy activation, which was confirmed by decreased expression of autophagy-related markers including LC3, Beclin1, Atg5, and Atg7 (P < 0.05). Meanwhile, lower ULK1 levels resulted in decreased expressions of goat SC marker genes ABP, AMH, FASL, and GATA4. However, a reverse trend of these parameters occurred when the goat SCs were transfected with ULK1 overexpression construct; higher ULK1 levels in goat SCs also decreased the ratio of Bax/Bcl-2. Moreover, ULK1 overexpression in goat SCs activated the autophagy levels when cells were exposed to an environmental contaminant bisphenol A (BPA). The above results indicated that ULK1 gene might play important roles in goat SC function by regulating cell viability.

This study focused on the effects of oxidized tyrosine products (OTPs) and major component dityrosine (DT) on the brain and behavior of growing mice. Male and female mice were treated with daily intragastric administration of either tyrosine (Tyr; 420 µg/kg body weight), DT (420 µg/kg body weight), or OTPs (1909 µg/kg body weight) for 35 days. We found that pure DT and OTPs caused redox state imbalance, elevated levels of inflammatory factors, hippocampal oxidative damage, and neurotransmitter disorders while activating the mitochondrial apoptosis pathway in the hippocampus and downregulating the genes associated with learning and memory. These events eventually led to growing mice learning and memory impairment, lagging responses, and anxiety-like behaviors. Furthermore, the male mice exhibited slightly more oxidative damage than the females. These findings imply that contemporary diets and food-processing strategies of the modern world should be modified to reduce oxidized protein intake.

This study evaluated the prognostic value of remnant lipoprotein cholesterol (RLP-C) as a predictor of in-stent restenosis (ISR) after drug-eluting stent (DES) implantation in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). Consecutive patients with CAD (n = 612) who underwent both successful coronary DES implantation and follow-up angiography ranging from 6 to 24 months were enrolled. The independent predictors of ISR were explored by multivariate logistic regression analysis; 95 (15.52%) patients were identified to have ISR. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that RLP-C concentration (odds ratio [OR]: 4.245, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.493-7.229), age (OR: 1.026, 95% CI: 1.002-1.051), diabetes mellitus (DM; OR: 1.811, 95% CI: 1.134-2.892), and lesion length (OR: 1.013, 95% CI: 1.002-1.024) were associated with ISR. Via subgroup analysis, we found that RLP-C was independently associated with ISR in both CAD with DM (OR: 4.154, 95% CI: 1.895-9.104) and CAD without DM (OR: 4.455, 95% CI: 2.097-9.464) groups. In the analysis of the receiver operating characteristics curve, RLP-C level >0.515 mmol/L exhibited 77.9% sensitivity and 56.5% specificity (area under the curve: 0.705, 95% CI: 0.648-0.762) in predicting ISR. In conclusion, RLP-C is independently associated with the development of ISR in patients with CAD after DES implantation.

RESUMO

An augmented reality (AR) three-dimensional (3D) display based on one-dimensional integral imaging (1DII), by using a lenticular lens array holographic optical element (LLA-HOE), is proposed. The 3D image of the 1DII has higher vertical resolution compared with the image of conventional integral imaging whose resolution is sharply reduced for providing quasi-continuous viewpoints in both the horizontal and vertical directions. The proposed 3D display consists of a projector and an LLA-HOE and is compact. As an image combiner, the LLA-HOE can diffract Bragg-matched light rays that have the same wavelength and incident angle as the original reference wave; it can also function as a lenticular lens array to reconstruct a 3D image but transmit other light rays emitted from the surroundings. In the experiment, an LLA-HOE of 80 mm×80 mm size is recorded, and a combination of a high-resolution 3D virtual image and a real 3D object is presented by the proposed AR 3D display.

To fully analyze the composition of volatile oil extracted from Tremella fuciformis, hydrodistillation (HD) and solid phase microextraction (SPME) were adopted simultaneously. In both cases, the analysis was carried out using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and the antioxidant activity of the volatile oil was determined by the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method with rutin as a positive control. Nineteen components in HD and 68 components in SPME were identified, respectively. Moreover, the oil obtained from T. fuciformis by HD indicated that aromatic compounds were a major class (93.5%), followed by the terpenes (5.7%), alkanes (0.4%), and alcohols (0.3%). Among them, butylated hydroxytoluene was the highest concentration (92.5%) of the compounds. The compounds detected by SPME were different from those of HD, and the substances with the largest content were esters (57.7%), followed by alcohols (19.0%), acids (7.0%), and aldehydes (6.3%). Only three of the same substances were detected in both of them, namely borneol, (-)-α-terpineol, and acetic acid. In the DPPH assays, strong antioxidant activity (IC50 = 0.176 mg/mL) was evident in volatile oil from T. fuciformis. Antioxidant activity was positively correlated with the concentration of volatile oil.

Estrogen receptor ß (ERß) is an important ER subtype in lung adenocarcinoma. However, the functions and mechanisms of ERß have not been fully elucidated. The aim of the present study was to investigate the biological effects and relevant mechanisms of ERß in lung adenocarcinoma. The protein expression of ERß was found to be higher in lung adenocarcinoma tissues compared with that in adjacent non­cancerous tissues (n=75, P<0.001). Of note, ERß protein expression was significantly correlated with tumor size (P=0.018), lymph node metastasis (P=0.041), clinical stage (P=0.041) and differentiation (P<0.001). In addition, ERß protein expression in A549 cells was found to be higher compared with that in human bronchial epithelial cells (HBEs). Furthermore, knockdown of ERß expression inhibited colony formation and cell invasion in vitro, whereas the number of metastatic tumors in the lungs of mice was decreased in vivo. Western blot analysis demonstrated that the expression of phosphorylated extracellular signal­regulated kinase (pERK), matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)­2 and MMP­9 was decreased by downregulation of ERß. Therefore, ERß may play an important role in lung adenocarcinoma progression via the MEK/ERK signaling axis, and it may represent a novel therapeutic target for lung adenocarcinoma in the future.

An integral imaging-based 2D/3D convertible display system is proposed by using a lens-array holographic optical element (LAHOE), a polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) film, and a projector. The LAHOE is closely attached to the PDLC film to constitute a projection screen. The LAHOE is used to realize integral imaging 3D display. When the PDLC film with an applied voltage is in the transparent state, the projector projects a Bragg matched 3D image, and the display system works in 3D mode. When the PDLC film without an applied voltage is in the scattering state, the projector projects a 2D image, and the display system works in 2D mode. A prototype of the integral imaging-based 2D/3D convertible display is developed, and it provides 2D/3D convertible images properly.

The problem of recovering missing data of an incomplete tensor has drawn more and more attentions in the fields of pattern recognition, machine learning, data mining, computer vision, and signal processing. Researches on this problem usually share a common assumption that the original tensor is of low-rank. One of the important ways to capture the low-rank structure of the incomplete tensor is based on tensor factorization. For the traditional tensor factorization algorithms, the tensor ranks should be specified ahead, which is not reasonable in real applications. To overcome this drawback, an adaptive algorithm is first presented based on sequentially truncated higher order singular value decomposition (ST-HOSVD) for fast low-rank approximation of complete tensor, in which the tensor ranks can be obtained adaptively. Then for tensor with missing data, we use adaptive ST-HOSVD and the average operator of low-rank approximation to improve the accuracy of the fulfilled tensor. Convergence analysis of the proposed algorithm is also given in this paper. The experimental results on 14 image datasets and three video datasets show that the proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art methods in terms of running time and the accuracy.

Paeoniflorin-6'-O-benzene sulfonate (CP-25) is a new ester derivative of paeoniflorin with improved lipid solubility and oral bioavailability, as well as better anti-inflammatory activity than its parent compound. In this study we explored whether CP-25 exerted therapeutic effects in collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) mice through regulating B-cell activating factor (BAFF)-BAFF receptors-mediated signaling pathways. CIA mice were given CP-25 or injected with biological agents rituximab or etanercept for 40 days. In CIA mice, we found that T cells and B cells exhibited abnormal proliferation; the percentages of CD19+ total B cells, CD19+CD27+-activated B cells, CD19+BAFFR+ and CD19+TACI+ cells were significantly increased in PBMCs and spleen lymphocytes. CP-25 suppressed the indicators of arthritis, alleviated histopathology, accompanied by reduced BAFF and BAFF receptors expressions, inhibited serum immunoglobulin levels, decreased the B-cell subsets percentages, and prevented the expressions of key molecules in NF-κB signaling. Furthermore, we showed that treatment with CP-25 reduced CD19+TRAF2+ cell expressions stimulated by BAFF and decreased TRAF2 overexpression in HEK293 cells in vitro. Thus, CP-25 restored the abnormal T cells proliferation and B-cell percentages to the normal levels, and normalized the elevated levels of IgA, IgG2a and key proteins in NF-κB signaling. In comparison, rituximab and etanercept displayed stronger anti-inflammatory activities than CP-25; they suppressed the elevated inflammatory indexes to below the normal levels in CIA mice. In summary, our results provide evidence that CP-25 alleviates CIA and regulates the functions of B cells through BAFF-TRAF2-NF-κB signaling. CP-25 would be a soft immunomodulatory drug with anti-inflammatory effect.

RESUMO

To understand the evolution and molecular characteristics of Jiangxi H9N2 viruses, we isolated 17 viruses in 2011 and analyzed their characteristics. Phylogenetic analyses revealed that their hemagglutinin genes originate from JS/1/00-like sublineage, neuraminidase genes originate from BJ/94-like sublineage, PB1, PA, NP, and NS genes all come from SH/F/98-like sublineage, PB2 genes originate from ST/163/04-like sublineage, while M genes come from G1-like sublineage. Genotype analysis showed that our isolates were classified as genotype 57. Molecular analyses indicated that our strains contained specific sites characteristic of low-pathogenic viruses. The current study once again highlights the necessity for continued surveillance of novel H9N2 viruses.

This work is focused on crystal phase transition of solid wastes and functional application of crystal analcime in waste water purification, which provide a new environment-friendly route. In this paper, analcime was synthesized from steel slag and Circulating fluidized bed combustion (CFBC) fly ash (CFA) by hydrothermal method enhanced via geopolymerization (non-crystallized process). Then the analcimes were used for the removal of heavy metal ions (Pb2+, Cu2+) in aqueous solutions. Both the raw materials and products were characterized by XRF, XRD, FT-IR, SEM-EDS, and TEM. The results showed that non-crystallized process reduced the time of hydrothermal reaction and promoted the purity of analcime. The adsorption kinetics of analcime were all well fitted the pseudo-second-order model, and adsorption isotherms were well described by the Langmuir model. The maximum adsorption capacity of analcime for Pb2+ and Cu2+ were around 75.76, and 21.83 mg/g, respectively. The preference order observed for adsorption is Pb2+ > Cu2+.
