High-sucrose high-fat diets are one of the causes of malnutrition, and may induce metabolic alterations such as dyslipidemia, insulin resistance, and adipogenesis. The objective of this work was to investigate the possible protective effect of traditionally edible avocado creole peel (Persea americana Mill var. drymifolia) when consuming a high-sucrose and fat diet (HSFD). The experimental animal model included 21 male Wistar rats divided in three groups: the control group received a standard diet of purina®, the HSFD group received a high fat diet plus 30% sucrose in drinking water, and finally the HSFD + AP group received the HSFD diet supplemented with 200 mg/kg of avocado peel for 14 weeks. It was observed that alterations included higher cholesterol, glucose, insulin, fatty acids and TNF-α levels as well as lower HDL, and adiponectin. The addition of avocado peel reverted some of these effects, resulting in normal values of triglicerides, insulin and adiponectin, while attenuated the levels of total cholesterol. Liver weight of the group added with avocado peel was similar to the control group. The neuronal density in the hippocampal areas CA1 and dentate gyrus DC were lower in the high glucose fat group, while the ingestion of the avocado peel showed a neuroprotective effect. The avocado creole ingestion reverted or attenuated most of the metabolic effects caused by a high-sucrose fat diet which was attributed to the compounds detected by HPLC-MS and GC-MS that included bioactive polyphenols such as flavanol quercetin, flavanone naringenin, flavan 3-ol catechin, cyanidin 3-glucoside, pelargonidin 3-glucoside, pelargonidin 3-rhamnoside, hydroxydelphinidin, eugenol and estragole.

OBJECTIVE: To analyse the psychometric properties, internal structure, and relationship with anthropometric indicators of the Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ) among Mexican university students according to the measurement invariance approach. METHODS: An instrumental study was carried out to assess the psychometric properties, validity, and reliability of the BSQ. The analysis of the measurement invariance was performed using the Least Squares Estimation, and weighted by adjusted variance and polychoric correlations after assessing different measurement models for BSQ in each group. The scores of the final version were correlated with anthropometric indicators by the Pearson correlation coefficient. RESULTS: As regards the dimensional analysis, all of the previous models for BSQ have favourable adjustment rates, although those with a single factor show more robust evidence. The configural invariance was accepted; suggesting that the one-dimensional structure is common for both men and women. However, 16-item factorial loadings were statistically different between the groups. Hence, they were discarded and an 18-item version (BSQ-18) was obtained, which is considered invariant as regards gender. In addition, there is a direct relationship between the scores of the BSQ-18 version and the body mass index, waist circumference, and fat percentage. Satisfactory indicators were found as regards stability. CONCLUSIONS: The BSQ-18 can be used with men and women, and has high reliability indicators to be conducted in clinical settings to assess eating disorders and obesity among university students.

RESUMEN Objetivo: Analizar las propiedades psicométricas, estructura interna y relación con indicadores antropométricos del Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ) en universitarios mexicanos, partiendo de un enfoque de la invarianza de medición. Métodos: Se realizó un estudio instrumental, orientado a la evaluación de las propiedades psicométricas, validez y fiabilidad, del BSQ. Se realizó análisis de invarianza de la medición por el método de estimación mínimos cuadrados ponderados con varianza ajustada y correlaciones policóricas, previa evaluación de diferentes modelos de medición del BSQ en cada grupo. Las puntuaciones de la versión final se correlacionaron con indicadores antropométricos mediante el coeficiente de correlación de Pearson. Resultados: En el análisis dimensional, todos los modelos previos del BSQ presentan índices de ajuste favorables, aunque aquellos de un solo factor presente son los que tienen evidencia más robusta. Se aceptó la invarianza configural, lo que indica que la estructura unidimensional es común a varones y mujeres. Sin embargo, las cargas factoriales de 16 ítems fueron estadísticamente diferentes entre los grupos, por lo que se descartaron y se obtuvo una versión de 18 ítems (BSQ-18), que se considera invariante respecto al sexo. Además, hay relación directa entre las puntuaciones de la versión del BSQ-18 y el índice de masa corporal, la circunferencia de cintura y el porcentaje de grasa. En cuanto a la fiabilidad, se hallaron indicadores satisfactorios. Conclusiones: El BSQ-18 es aplicable tanto a varones como a mujeres y tiene indicadores de fiabilidad elevados que posibilitan su uso en entornos clínicos para la evaluación en el abordaje de trastornos de la conducta alimentaria y obesidad en jóvenes universitarios.

The metabolic syndrome (MS) underlies metabolic disorders considered risk factors for the development of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, which are major causes of morbidity and mortality in most of the world. Sterculic acid has been proposed as a potential tool for the treatment of MS since it inhibits the activity of the stearoyl-CoA desaturase-1 (SCD1), a central enzyme in lipid metabolism. We analyzed the effect of sterculic oil (SO) co-administration with 30% fructose in drinking water on the development of MS in male Wistar rats. After 8 weeks, 0.4% SO exerted a protective effect from MS development since parameters altered by fructose (blood pressure, insulin resistance, serum glucose and triglycerides, steatosis, and adiposity) were similar to those of control rats.

The present study evaluated the effects of blackberry juice that is rich in different concentrations of anthocyanins and polyphenols (2.6 mg/kg anthocyanins, 14.57 mg/kg polyphenols; 5.83 mg/kg anthocyanins, 27.10 mg/kg polyphenols; 10.57 mg/kg anthocyanins, 38.40 mg/kg polyphenols) on anxiety-like behaviour in Wistar rats. The rats were treated with blackberry juice for 21 days and then tested in the elevated plus maze, locomotor activity test and forced swim test. The results were compared with a reference anxiolytic drug diazepam (2.0 mg/kg) and vehicle (8.7 ml/kg). The intermediate dose of blackberry juice exerted an anxiolytic-like effect that was similar to diazepam, without affecting locomotive activity. The low and high doses of blackberry juice exerted no significant effects on anxiety-like behaviour compared with vehicle. In the forced swim test, both the high and intermediate doses of blackberry juice reduced total immobility time, suggesting a protective effect against behavioural changes that are induced by acute stress. These findings suggest a potential therapeutic effect of blackberry juice on anxiety that is associated with a stressful event.

Introducción y objetivos: El cáncer de mama (CaMa) es la neoplasia más común en las mujeres. La Organización Mundial de la Salud estima que el 30% de las muertes por CaMa son debidas a factores asociados a estilos de vida. En México hay una epidemia de obesidad, que favorece la aparición de hipertensión arterial y diabetes mellitus 2. No obstante, la prevalencia y contribución clínica de esta tríada en el desarrollo del CaMa y su interacción con los factores de riesgo conocidos han sido poco estudiados. Materiales y métodos: Se analizó asociación de obesidad, la hipertensión arterial y la diabetes mellitus 2 y de los factores de riesgo para CaMa (reportados en los expedientes clínicos de mujeres con y sin diagnóstico de CaMa del Hospital N.° 71 del Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social) y su peso proporcional, con la ausencia o presencia de diagnóstico de CaMa. Resultados: Solo los antecedentes heredofamiliares y el tabaquismo, de los factores de riesgo reconocidos para CaMa, mostraron asociación con el diagnóstico de CaMa. Tampoco las enfermedades metabólicas mostraron diferencias. No obstante, el peso proporcional de todas las variables sí mostró significación estadística en el grupo con CaMa. Conclusiones: La visión clásica de que los factores de índole clínico per se son determinantes para el desarrollo de CaMa necesita ser modificada. Es necesario realizar estudios que consideren la interrelación que guardan los factores de riesgo entre sí y otros trastornos que se han normalizado en la población


Introduction and objectives: Breast cancer (BC) is the most common neoplasm in women worldwide. The World Health Organisation estimates that 30% of deaths due to BC are associated with lifestyle factors. In Mexico there is an obesity epidemic, which favours the appearance of hypertension and diabetes mellitus type 2 (DM2). However, there have been few studies of the prevalence and clinical contribution of this triad in the development of BC and its interaction with known risk factors. Materials and methods: We analysed the association of obesity, hypertension and DM2, and risk factors for BC (reported in the clinical files of women with and without a diagnosis of BC in Hospital N.° 71 of the Mexican Institute of Social Security) and their proportional weight, with the presence or absence of a BC diagnosis. Results: Among the recognised risk factors for BC, only a hereditary family history and smoking were associated with a diagnosis of BC. Metabolic diseases showed no differences. However, the proportional weight of all the variables was statistically significant in the group with BC. Conclusions: There is a need to modify the classical view that clinical factors per se determine the development of BC. Studies are needed that analyse the interrelation between risk factors and other disorders that have become highly prevalent in the population

Sterculia apetala (order: Malvales, family: Sterculiaceae) seed oil contains two cyclopropene fatty acids: sterculic and malvalic acid. Both positive and negative effects have been associated with the consumption of sterculic oil. In Mexico, S. apetala seeds are consumed after being boiled or roasted, used as chocolate flavoring, and utilized as animal fodder. Therefore, it is important to evaluate whether the consumption of this seed has a negative impact on the organism. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of administration of sterculic oil, during an 8-week period, on anxiety-like behavior and spontaneous locomotor activity in Zucker rats, analyzed through light/dark and open-field tests. The results showed that the consumption of sterculic oil decreased exploration latency in light/dark tests, which suggests an anxiolytic-like effect. Alterations in time spent on rearing and grooming were present in open-field tests, but this was not statistically significant, discarding nonspecific motor alterations. The alterations found in this study are possibly related to intrinsic obesity and metabolic complications present in the Zucker rat model, where leptin plays an important role in animal mood, more so than sterculic oil consumption.

The aims of this study were to evaluate the positive inotropic effect of a new macrocyclic derivative (compound 11) and characterize the molecular mechanism involved in its biological activity. The first step was achieved by synthesis of a macrocyclic derivative involving a series of reactions for the preparation of several steroid derivatives such as (a) steroid-pyrimidinone (3 and 4), (b) steroid-amino (5), (c) steroid-imino (6), (d) ester-steroid (7 and 8), and (e) amido-steroid (9 and 10). Finally, 11 was prepared by removing the tert-butyldimethylsilane fragment of 10. The biological activity of compounds on perfusion pressure and vascular resistance was evaluated on isolated rat heart using the Langendorff model. The inotropic activity of 11 was evaluated in presence of prazosin, metoprolol, indomethacin, nifedipine, and flutamide to characterize its molecular mechanism. Theoretical experiments were carried out with a Docking model, to assess potential interactions of androgen receptor with 11. The results showed that only this macrocyclic derivative exerts changes on perfusion pressure and vascular resistance translated as the positive inotropic effect, and this effect was blocked with flutamide; these data indicate that the positive inotropic activity induced by this macrocyclic derivative was via androgen receptor activation. The theoretical results indicated that the interaction of the macrocyclic derivative with the androgen receptor involves several amino acid residues such as Leu704, Asn705, Met780, Cys784, Met749, Leu762, Phe764, Ser778, and Met787. In conclusion, all these data suggest that the positive inotropic activity of the macrocyclic derivative may depend on its chemical structure.

The effect of blue maize extract in factors related to metabolic syndrome (MS) in Wistar rats was investigated. Total polyphenols, monomeric anthocyanins, and antioxidant activity were analyzed in blue maize. MS was induced in Wistar rats fed with high-sucrose (HS) diet for 12 weeks. During a period of 4 weeks, blue maize extract was administrated to HS groups fed with high-sucrose and high-cholesterol-high-sucrose (HS+C) diets. In the blue maize extract administered by orogastric cannulation, the levels of total polyphenols and anthocyanins were 9.97 and 2.92 mg/kg of weight, respectively. HS diet administered during a period of 12 weeks increased significantly systolic blood pressure, serum triglycerides, and decreased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), alterations related to the MS. Abdominal adipose tissue was only increased in the HS + C group. Blue maize extract administration enhanced HDL-C and decreased systolic blood pressure, serum triglycerides, total cholesterol, and epididymal adipose tissue weight. The blue maize may represent a promising nutraceutical option for the treatment of MS.

BACKGROUND: There are data indicating that several azonine-derivatives may exert effects on some biological systems; however, there is very low information on the biological activity induced by these compounds on left ventricular pressure. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to synthesize and evaluate the biological activity of new triazoninederivative on left ventricular pressure. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The first stage involved: 1) preparation of two azepine-benzamide derivatives (Z or E) by reaction of the nitrobenzoyl azide with adrenosterone; and 2) reaction of (Z)-azepine-benzamide derivative with ethylenediamine to form the triazonine derivative. The structure of compounds was confirmed by spectroscopy and spectrometry data. The second stage involved the biologic activity on left ventricular pressure was evaluated in a model of rat heart isolated. In addition, some physicochemical parameters were evaluated to characterize the possible molecules involved in its effect. RESULTS: The results showed that only the triazonine increased left ventricular pressure via androgen receptor. CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, this phenomenon is conditioned by the functional groups involved in the chemical structure of triazonine derivative and their interaction with residues of amino acids involved on the androgen receptor surface.
