The spinal cord is at risk of injury during spinal surgery. If intraoperative spinal cord injury is identified early, irreversible impairment or loss of neurological function can be prevented. Different types of spinal cord injury result in damage to different spinal cord regions, which may cause different somatosensory and motor evoked potential signal responses. In this study, we examined electrophysiological and histopathological changes between contusion, distraction, and dislocation spinal cord injuries in a rat model. We found that contusion led to the most severe dorsal white matter injury and caused considerable attenuation of both somatosensory and motor evoked potentials. Dislocation resulted in loss of myelinated axons in the lateral region of the injured spinal cord along the rostrocaudal axis. The amplitude of attenuation in motor evoked potential responses caused by dislocation was greater than that caused by contusion. After distraction injury, extracellular spaces were slightly but not significantly enlarged; somatosensory evoked potential responses slightly decreased and motor evoked potential responses were lost. Correlation analysis showed that histological and electrophysiological findings were significantly correlated and related to injury type. Intraoperative monitoring of both somatosensory and motor evoked potentials has the potential to identify iatrogenic spinal cord injury type during surgery.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: This study aims to evaluate whether dosimetric parameters affect the intrahepatic out-field recurrence or distant metastasis-free survival following the stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 76 patients with HCC who were treated with SBRT from January 2015 to May 2020 were included in this retrospective study. The main clinical endpoints considered were intrahepatic out-field free survival (OutFFS) and distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS). The target parameters and the liver were documented including tumor diameters, gross tumor volume (GTV), Liver minus GTV volume (LGV), and Liver minus GTV mean dose (LGD). Multivariable Cox regression with forward stepwise selection was performed to identify independent risk factors for OutFFS and DMFS. Maximally selected rank statistics were used to determine the most informative cut-off value for age and LGD. RESULTS: The median follow-up was 28.2 months (range, 7.7-74.5 months). LGD higher than 12.54 Gy [HR, 0.861(0.747-0.993); p = 0.040] and age greater than 67-year-old [HR, 0.966(0.937-0.997); p = 0.030] are two independent predictors of OutFFS, previous TACE treatment [HR, 0.117(0.015-0.891); p = 0.038] was an independent predictor of DMFS. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study suggested that the higher the dose received by the normal liver (greater than 12.54 Gy) the better the intrahepatic out-field recurrence-free survival (RFS) rate. Further study is warranted to confirm and to better understand this phenomenon.

PURPOSE: The present work focused on exploring the role of circRNA3616 in neuronal inflammation and apoptosis in spinal cord injury (SCI). METHODS: The SCI mouse model and circRNA3616 knockdown SCI mouse model were established. This work focused on assessing the mouse locomotor function using Basso Mouse Scale (BMS) and BMS subscore. Hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining and Tunel staining were conducted, while myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity was also detected on spinal cord tissues. We also knocked down circRNA3616 expression in NSC-34 cells. Meanwhile, the SCI cell model was established by oxygen glucose deprivation (OGD) in NSC-34 cells. Moreover, we conducted dual-luciferase reporter gene assay. Flow cytometry (FCM) was conducted to detect SCI cell apoptosis, whereas cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) assay was performed to analyze cell viability. This study also implemented enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay to detect inflammatory factors in spinal cord tissues, serum, and cells. RESULTS: CircRNA3616 knockdown reduced the damage, inflammatory response, apoptosis, and MPO activity in SCI mouse serum and spinal cord tissues. CircRNA3616 knockdown increased BMS and BMS subscore of SCI mice. CircRNA3616 up-regulated TLR4 expression by sponging miR-137. CircRNA3616 knockdown inhibited the TLR4, p-IkBα, p-p65/p65 protein expression, while promoting IkBα protein expression within SCI mouse spinal cord. TLR4 reversed circRNA3616 knockdown-induced inhibition on NF-κB pathway activity in SCI cells. CircRNA3616 knockdown attenuated neuronal cell inflammation and apoptosis via TLR4/NF-κB pathway after SCI. CONCLUSION: CircRNA3616 silencing attenuates inflammation and apoptosis in SCI by inhibiting TLR4/NF-κB activity via sponging miR-137. CircRNA3616 is the possible anti-SCI therapeutic target.

AIM: To evaluate the vision status and sociodemographic associations of visual acuity (VA) in an urban and rural population in a coastal province of southern China. METHODS: The Fujian Eye Study, a population-based cross-sectional study, was performed from May 2018 to October 2019. Totally 10 044 participants over 50 years old from all nine cities in Fujian Province were enrolled, and underwent a questionnaire and a series of standard physical and ocular examinations. VA was measured by E Standard Logarithmic Visual Acuity Chart (GB 11533-1989). Data was double entered with EpiData v3.1 for data collation and Stata/SE statistical software v15.1 was used to analyze the data. RESULTS: Totally 8211 (81.8%) participants were finally included and were divided into urban populations (4678 subjects), rural populations (n=3533), coastal residents (n=6434), and inland residents (1777 subjects); 4836 participants were female. The mean age was 64.39±8.87y (median 64y; range 50-98y). The mean presenting VA was 0.61±0.30 (0.23±0.27 logMAR), and the mean best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 0.82±0.28 (0.08±0.19 logMAR). In the multiple regression analysis, BCVA was significantly correlated with several socioeconomic and biologic factors, including age (P<0.001), education level (P<0.001), income (P=0.005), rural residency (P<0.001), inland residency (P=0.001) and refractive error (P<0.001), while sex (P=0.194) was independent with BCVA. CONCLUSION: Accessible services and eye health policies targeting the elderly, people with high myopia and people living in rural or inland areas are needed.

Herein, an intriguing exchange bias (EB) effect manifesting itself from positive to negative with an increase in the cooling field (HFC) is reported in the single crystal of Mn-doped metal-organic framework (MOF) [NH2(CH3)2][FeIIIFeII(HCOO)6] (1) by finely tuning the exchange interactions between the magnetic ions. Note that the doping ratio of Mn relative to the total metal ions is about 15%. Negative magnetization and EB below the compensation temperature were both observed in 1, and the EB field (HE) changes its sign from positive to negative when HFC is larger than ∼10 kOe. The abnormal HFC dependence of EB can be interpreted explicitly by a combination of negative magnetization and couplings among the ions of Fe3+, Fe2+, and Mn2+ with varying the HFC. This work demonstrates a tunable EB in MOFs, in favor of designing novel magnetic devices.

BACKGROUND: In response to radiation injury, p65 becomes activated. The formation of p65 is one target of Onjisaponin B (OB), but it has not been studied in radioprotection. In addition, there is a binding site for p65 in the promoter region of Cas3. This study evaluates the use of OB as an intervention to modulate p65/Cas3 following radiation exposure. PURPOSE: This study aimed to confirm that OB regulated the transcription of Cas3 via p65 to overcome radiation-induced damage. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Cells and mice were exposed to X-rays at a dose of 6 Gy. Immunofluorescence was used to locate intracellular p65. For the protein and mRNA analyses, Western blotting and RT-qPCR-based assays were conducted accordingly. HE staining was used to observe pathological changes in tissues. DNA damage was detected by the comet assay and DNA ladder assay. Next, apoptosis was detected by flow cytometry and Hoechst staining. RESULTS: Compared with the radiation group, the expression levels of p-p65 and c-Cas3 in the drug group were significantly down-regulated by OB 20 µg/ml. When the expression of p65 was suppressed in V79 and TC cells, OB did not significantly inhibit the activation of p65 or Cas3 in response to irradiation, nor did it significantly inhibit the phosphorylation of p65 and subsequent nuclear translocation. Overexpression of p65 in V79 and MTEC-1 cells resulted in OB significantly inhibiting the activation of p65 and Cas3, and the phosphorylation and translocation of p65 into the nucleus. At 3 d for V79 cells and 24 h for MTEC-1 cells after radiation, compared with the Cas3 over plasmid transfection group, the drug transfection group had no significant effect on reducing apoptosis. In p65+/- mice, expression of the p65 gene was knocked down, leading to increased tissue apoptosis and inflammation, and serious tissue pathological changes. The inhibition of p65 activation by OB after radiation exposure was not apparent in the thymus, although it was observed in the lung. CONCLUSIONS: OB interfered with radiation injury by targeting and regulating p65/Cas3. Therefore, it has been concluded that p65 is an important target molecule for the treatment of radiation injury.

Tailoring thermal transport by structural parameters could result in mechanically fragile and brittle networks. An indispensable goal is to design hierarchical architecture materials that combine thermal and mechanical properties in a continuous and cohesive network. A promising strategy to create such a hierarchical network targets additive manufacturing of hybrid porous voxels at nanoscale. Here we describe the convergence of agile additive manufacturing of porous hybrid voxels to tailor hierarchically and mechanically tunable objects. In one strategy, the uniformly distributed porous silica voxels, which form the basis for the control of thermal transport, are non-covalently interfaced with polymeric networks, yielding hierarchic super-elastic architectures with thermal insulation properties. Another additive strategy for achieving mechanical strength involves the versatile orthogonal surface hybridization of porous silica voxels retains its low thermal conductivity of 19.1 mW m-1 K-1, flexible compressive recovery strain (85%), and tailored mechanical strength from 71.6 kPa to 1.5 MPa. The printed lightweight high-fidelity objects promise thermal aging mitigation for lithium-ion batteries, providing a thermal management pathway using 3D printed silica objects.

Background: Reconstruction of pelvis girdle stability after tumor-induced hemipelvectomy remains challenging. We surgically treated 13 patients with custom-made, three-dimensional printed hemipelvic prostheses. We aim to identify the preliminary outcomes for patients who have been managed with more mixed regions of prosthetic pelvic reconstruction and the feasibility of two reconstructive systems. Methods: Seven male patients and 6 female patients treated at our center between January 2019 and May 2021 were included. There were 11 primary sarcomas and 2 solitary bone metastases. After en bloc tumor resection, two types of personalized, three-dimensional printed prostheses were fixed to restore the stability and rebuild the load transfer. The position of the reconstructed hemipelvis was evaluated on an anteroposterior plain radiograph. The complications and outcomes were traced. One amputation specimen was discovered through histological analysis of the porous structure. Results: The operative duration was 467 ± 144 min, and the blood loss was 3,119 ± 662 ml. During a follow-up of 22.4 ± 8.5 months, two patients had delayed wound healing and one had a second-stage flap transfer. One patient with osteosarcoma died of pulmonary metastasis 27 months after surgery. Two patients with marginal resection suffered from local recurrence and had extra surgeries. One patient had traumatic hip dislocation 2 months after surgery and manipulative reduction was performed. The acetabular inclination of the affected side was 42.2 ± 4.3°, compared with 42.1 ± 3.9° on the contralateral side. The horizontal distance between the center of the femoral head and the middle vertical line was 10.4 ± 0.6 cm, while the reconstructed side was 9.8 ± 0.8 cm. No significant difference in acetabular position after surgery was found (p > 0.05). The amputation specimen harvested from one patient with local recurrence demonstrated bone and soft tissue ingrowth within the three-dimensional printed trabecular structure. Walking ability was preserved in all patients who are still alive and no prosthesis-related complications occurred. The MSTS score was 22.0 ± 3.7. Conclusions: Both types of custom-made, three-dimensional printed prostheses manifested excellent precision, mechanical stability, and promising functional rehabilitation. The porous structure exhibited favorable histocompatibility to facilitate the ingrowth of bone and soft tissue.

Poly(ethylene oxide)-based solid-state electrolytes are widely considered promising candidates for the next generation of lithium and sodium metal batteries. However, several challenges, including low oxidation resistance and low cation transference number, hinder poly(ethylene oxide)-based electrolytes for broad applications. To circumvent these issues, here, we propose the design, synthesis and application of a fluoropolymer, i.e., poly(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl methacrylate). This polymer, when introduced into a poly(ethylene oxide)-based solid electrolyte, improves the electrochemical window stability and transference number. Via multiple physicochemical and theoretical characterizations, we identify the presence of tailored supramolecular bonds and peculiar morphological structures as the main factors responsible for the improved electrochemical performances. The polymeric solid electrolyte is also investigated in full lithium and sodium metal lab-scale cells. Interestingly, when tested in a single-layer pouch cell configuration in combination with a Li metal negative electrode and a LiMn0.6Fe0.4PO4-based positive electrode, the polymeric solid-state electrolyte enables 200 cycles at 42 mA·g-1 and 70 °C with a stable discharge capacity of approximately 2.5 mAh when an external pressure of 0.28 MPa is applied.

Haemaphysalis longicornis is an obligate haematophagous ectoparasite, transmitting a variety of pathogens, which brings great damage to human health and animal husbandry development. Lipocalins (LIP) are a family of proteins that transport small hydrophobic molecules and also involve in immune regulation, such as the regulation of cell homeostasis, inhibiting the host's inflammatory response and resisting the contractile responses in host blood vessels. Therefore, it is one of the candidate antigens for vaccines. Based on previous studies, we constructed the recombinant plasmid pcDNA3.1-HlLIP of LIP homologue from H. longicornis (HlLIP). ELISA results showed that rabbits immunized with pcDNA3.1-HlLIP produced higher anti-rHlLIP antibody levels compared with the pcDNA3.1 group, indicating that pcDNA3.1-HlLIP induced the humoral immune response of host. Adult H. longicornis infestation trial in rabbits demonstrated that the engorgement weight, oviposition and hatchability of H. longicornis fed on rabbits immunized with pcDNA3.1-HlLIP decreased by 7.07%, 14.30% and 11.70% respectively, compared with that of the pcDNA3.1 group. In brief, DNA vaccine of pcDNA3.1-HlLIP provided immune protection efficiency of 30% in rabbits. This study demonstrated that pcDNA3.1-HlLIP can partially protect rabbits against H. longicornis, and it is possible to develop a new candidate antigen against ticks.

A series of novel pathalide-1,2,4-oxadiazole analogs were synthesized for discovering novel anti-inflammatory agents. After the assessment of their cytotoxicity in vitro, all compounds had been screened for their anti-inflammatory activity by evaluating their inhibitory effect on LPS-induced NO production in RAW 264.7 macrophages. SARs had been concluded, and finally compound E13 was found to be the most potent compound. This compound could also significantly decrease the production of iNOS and COX-2. Preliminary mechanism studies indicated that compound E13 could inhibit the TLR4/NF-κB and ERK/p38 signaling pathways. These findings indicate that E13 holds great potential to be a lead compound for discovering novel anti-inflammatory drugs.

At present, the commonly used allogeneic bone powder in the clinic can be divided into nondemineralized bone matrix and demineralized bone matrix (DBM). Commonly used demineralizers include acids and ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA). There may be some diversities between them. Also, the size of the bone particle can affects its cell compatibility and osteogenic ability. We produced different particle sizes i.e., < 75, 75-100, 100-315, 315-450, 450-650, and 650-1000 µm, and treated in three ways (nondemineralized, demineralized by EDTA, and demineralized by HCl). Scanning electron microscopy showed that the surface of the samples in each group was relatively smooth without obvious differences. The results of specific surface area and porosity analysis showed that they were significantly higher in demineralized bone powder than in nondemineralized bone powder, however, there was no significant difference between the two decalcification methods. The content of hydroxyproline in nondemineralized bone powder and EDTA-demineralized bone powder had no statistical difference, while HCl-demineralization had statistical significance compared with the former two, and the content increased with the decrease of particle size. The protein and BMP-2 extracted from HCl demineralized bone powder were significantly higher than that from nondemineralized bone powder and EDTA demineralized bone powder, and there were differences among different particle sizes. These results suggested the importance of demineralization mode and particle size of the allogenic bone powder and provided guidance for the choice of the most appropriate particle size and demineralization mode to be used in tissue bioengineering.

PURPOSE: To investigate sinovenous outflow restriction (SOR) in lateral sinus dural arteriovenous fistulas (LSDAVFs) after Gamma Knife radiosurgery (GKRS) and its association with complete obliteration. METHODS: We retrospectively (1995-2019) enrolled 39 patients with LSDAVFs who had undergone GKRS alone and evaluated their angiography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) before and after GKRS. The LS conduits ipsilateral and contralateral to the DAVFs were scored using a 5-point scoring system, with scores ranging from 0 (total occlusion) to 4 (fully patent). SOR was defined by a conduit score < 2. Demographics, imaging features, and outcomes were compared between patients with and without ipsilateral SOR after GKRS. Logistic regression analysis was performed to estimate the odds ratio (OR) for obliteration with the imaging findings. RESULTS: After a median angiographic follow-up of 28 months for the 39 patients, the ipsilateral LS became more restrictive (median conduit score before and after GKRS: 2 vs. 1, p = .011). Twenty-one patients with ipsilateral SOR after GKRS had a significantly lower obliteration rate (52.4% vs. 94.4%, p = .005) than those without SOR. Follow-up SOR was independently associated with a lower obliteration rate (OR 0.05, p = .017) after adjustment for age, cortical venous reflux, and absent sinus flow void on MRI. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates a restrictive change of outflow in LSDAVFs after GKRS and a lower obliteration rate in patients with SOR. Follow-up imaging for SOR may help predict outcomes of these patients.

Importance: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a heterogeneous syndrome prevalent among hospitalized patients. Personalized risk estimation and risk factor identification may allow effective intervention and improved outcomes. Objective: To develop and validate personalized AKI risk estimation models using electronic health records (EHRs), examine whether personalized models were beneficial in comparison with global and subgroup models, and assess the heterogeneity of risk factors and their outcomes in different subpopulations. Design, Setting, and Participants: This diagnostic study analyzed EHR data from 1 tertiary care hospital and used machine learning and logistic regression to develop and validate global, subgroup, and personalized risk estimation models. Transfer learning was implemented to enhance the personalized model. Predictor outcomes across subpopulations were analyzed, and metaregression was used to explore predictor interactions. Adults who were hospitalized for 2 or more days from November 1, 2007, to December 31, 2016, were included in the analysis. Patients with moderate or severe kidney dysfunction at admission were excluded. Data were analyzed between August 28, 2019, and May 8, 2022. Exposures: Clinical and laboratory variables in the EHR. Main Outcomes and Measures: The main outcome was AKI of any severity, and AKI was defined using the Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes serum creatinine criteria. Performance of the models was measured with area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC), area under the precision-recall curve, and calibration. Results: The study cohort comprised 76 957 inpatient encounters. Patients had a mean (SD) age of 55.5 (17.4) years and included 42 159 men (54.8%). The personalized model with transfer learning outperformed the global model for AKI estimation in terms of AUROC among general inpatients (0.78 [95% CI, 0.77-0.79] vs 0.76 [95% CI, 0.75-0.76]; P < .001) and across the high-risk subgroups (0.79 [95% CI, 0.78-0.80] vs 0.75 [95% CI, 0.74-0.77]; P < .001) and low-risk subgroups (0.74 [95% CI, 0.73-0.75] vs 0.71 [95% CI, 0.70-0.72]; P < .001). The AUROC improvement reached 0.13 for the high-risk subgroups, such as those undergoing liver transplant and cardiac surgery. Moreover, the personalized model with transfer learning performed better than or comparably with the best published models in well-studied AKI subgroups. Predictor outcomes varied significantly between patients, and interaction analysis uncovered modifiers of the predictor outcomes. Conclusions and Relevance: Results of this study demonstrated that a personalized modeling with transfer learning is an improved AKI risk estimation approach that can be used across diverse patient subgroups. Risk factor heterogeneity and interactions at the individual level highlighted the need for agile, personalized care.

Melanoidins, making general contribution to the food characteristics, are extensively generated in the production of Chinese traditional vinegar; however, their effect on flavor modification remains unknown. This study investigated the changes in the melanoidins of Zhenjiang aromatic vinegar (ZAV) during decoction, and the interactions of crude melanoidins (CM) and pure melanoidins (PM) from decocted and undecocted ZAV with mixed aroma compounds were compared. With the exception of CN, OH and CH, chemical bonds and groups varied among the four types of melanoidins. However, CM and PM, obtained from decocted or undecocted vinegar, displayed generally similar structures, which resulted in their consistent retention of volatiles owning to the overall structure characteristics. Compared to aqueous solution, CM and PM from undecocted vinegar exhibited release, non-influence, or adsorption of flavors. However, melanoidins from decocted vinegar appeared the adsorption for all flavors but 2,3,5,6-Tetramethylpyrazine with weakened release. Free low molecular weight (LMw) compounds would affect the volatiles retention. Total solids (TS) from undecocted vinegar adsorbed volatiles except diethyl succinate; however, TS from decocted vinegar released all flavors significantly. Therefore, the decocted melanoidins were beneficial for the persistence of aroma. This study provided a base for elucidating the formation of melanoidins in decoction procedure and their roles in flavor modification.

Nociceptors in the dorsal root ganglia (DRG) and trigeminal ganglia (TG) are necessary for transmitting pain and itch signals. However, the molecular mechanism regulating nociceptor development remains largely unknown. This study identifies that the transcription factor Meis1 is generally expressed in two groups of sensory neurons in the developing DRG. During prenatal and neonatal stages, approximately 2/3 of Meis1+ neurons are Runx1+ nociceptors, while 1/3 of Meis1+ neurons are NF200+ myelinated neurons. At postnatal stages, Meis1 expression in nociceptors is gradually reduced. Here, we constructed a Meis1 conditional knockout mouse line to selectively delete Meis1 in Nav1.8 lineage nociceptors. Microarray analyses showed that differentially expressed genes in the Meis1 mutant DRG were enriched in pathways related to sensory perception of pain and nervous system development. In addition, Meis1 regulates the expression of some marker genes of Nppb+ neurons and C-LTMRs. Furthermore, Meis1 mutant mice exhibit behavioral deficits in response to light mechanical pain, static touch and chemical itch. Therefore, this study reveals that Meis1 is required to regulate the development of nociceptors.

A diaphragm-based hermetic optical fiber Fabry-Pérot (FP) cavity is proposed and demonstrated for pressure sensing. The FP cavity is hermetically sealed using one-step CO2 laser welding with a cavity length from 30 to 100 µm. A thin diaphragm is formed by polishing the hermetic FP cavity for pressure sensing. The fabricated FP cavity has a fringe contrast larger than 15 dB. The experimental results show that the fabricated device has a linear response to the change in pressure, with a sensitivity of -2.02 nm/MPa in the range of 0 to 4 MPa. The results demonstrate that the proposed fabrication technique can be used for fabricating optical fiber microcavities for sensing applications.

Background: Exercise plays an essential role in improving motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease (PD), but the underlying mechanism in the central nervous system remains unclear. Methods: Motor ability was observed after 12-week treadmill exercise on a 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)-induced mouse model of PD. RNA-sequencing on four brain regions (cerebellum, cortex, substantia nigra (SN), and striatum) from control animals, MPTP-induced PD, and MPTP-induced PD model treated with exercise for 12 weeks were performed. Transcriptional networks on the four regions were further identified by an integrative network biology approach. Results: The 12-week treadmill exercise significantly improved the motor ability of an MPTP-induced mouse model of PD. RNA-seq analysis showed SN and striatum were remarkably different among individual region's response to exercise in the PD model. Especially, synaptic regulation pathways about axon guidance, synapse assembly, neurogenesis, synaptogenesis, transmitter transport-related pathway, and synaptic regulation genes, including Neurod2, Rtn4rl2, and Cd5, were upregulated in SN and striatum. Lastly, immunofluorescence staining revealed that exercise rescued the loss of TH+ synapses in the striatal region in PD mice, which validates the key role of synaptic regulation pathways in exercise-induced protective effects in vivo. Conclusion: SN and striatum are important brain regions in which critical transcriptional changes, such as in synaptic regulation pathways, occur after the exercise intervention on the PD model.

Objective: The surgical treatment scheme of humeral shaft fracture is still controversial with no consensus reached. This meta-analysis was aimed at comparing the efficacy and safety of intramedullary nail (IMN) and locking compression plate (LCP) in the treatment of humeral shaft fractures. Methods: PubMed, Medline, Embase, Ovid, Cochrane Library, ISI Web of Science, Clinical Trials, and Chinese databases, including China National Knowledge Infrastructure Project, Wanfang database, and China biomedical abstracts database, were used to search the literature. Review Manager software was employed for statistical analysis and establishing forest and funnel maps. Categorical variables were measured by relative risk (RR), and standardized mean difference (SMD) was used to measure continuous variables. 95% confidence intervals were used for each variable. The modified Jadad scale, Newcastle-Ottawa scale, and Cochrane's bias risk tools were used to evaluate the bias and risk of eligible studies. Results: A total of 14 studies were included in the analysis with a total of 903 patients with humeral shaft fracture. Significant differences with regard to operation time (Std = -1.18, 95% CI: -2.14, -0.22, Z = 2.41, P = 0.02), blood loss (Std = -2.97, 95% CI: -4.32, -1.63, Z = 4.34, P < 0.001), and postoperative infection rate (RR = 0.32, 95% CI: -0.15, 0.68, Z = 2.98, P = 0.003) were noted between the IMN group and LCP group. In addition, the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeon (ASES) score (Std = -0.22, 95% CI: -0.44, 0.01, Z = 2.08, P = 0.04) and the rate of shoulder and elbow function limitation (RR = 1.88, 95% CI: 1.06, 3.33, Z = 2.17, P = 0.03) between the 2 groups were also statistically significant. There were no significant differences in the rate of radial nerve injury, nonunion, delayed healing, and secondary operation between the two groups. Conclusion: IMN is superior than the LCP in terms of the operation time, intraoperative bleeding, and postoperative infection, suggesting its superiority in the humeral shaft fracture fixation. However, IMN is inferior to LCP in ASES score and shoulder elbow function limitation rate, indicating poor early postoperative functional recovery. More studies are required to evaluate and analyze the clinical efficacy between IMN and LCP regarding long-term function after artificial graft removal.
