RESUMO

Indole-3-carbinol (I3C) is extracted from cruciferous vegetables and is well known for its anti-cancer, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. This study investigated the protective effect of I3C in hyperlipidemia zebrafish larvae and early life stage toxicity of I3C on zebrafish embryos/larvae. Zebrafish larvae were fed with 4% high-cholesterol diet (HCD) and treated with I3C 2.5µmol/L and 5µmol/L for two weeks. Confocal image analysis, oil Red O staining were used to analysis vascular lipid accumulation and western blotting was used to evaluate possible mechanics. In addition, zebrafish embryos were treated with I3C for 96 h to assess the general toxicity and cardiotoxicity. We found that lipid deposition on vasculature was dose-dependently decreased in the I3C treated groups as compared with control group (47%, 23%, p<0.01). Moreover, we demonstrated that I3C inhibited lipid deposition by inducing autophagy, as identified by the enhancement of LC3-II, beclin-1, hVps34 and m-cathepsin D as well as by the reduction of P62, Bcl-2, Akt, p- Akt, mTOR, and p- mTOR in HCD fed zebrafish larvae (p<0.05). In summary, I3C shows protective effects on hyperlipidemia zebrafish larvae and maybe a promising multitarget drug in the prevention and protection against atherosclerotic.

BACKGROUND: Carotid body hyperactivity is important for sympathetic-related diseases and carotid body volume may partly reflect carotid bodies' activity. Our objective was to identify the association between carotid body volume and hypertension or other sympathetic-related diseases. METHODS: Consecutive individuals, undergoing carotid ultrasonography, who were eligible for the inclusion criteria were included. The bilateral carotid bodies were detected and volumetric parameters were measured by carotid ultrasonography in clinical. Clinical data of included participants were collected and analysed. RESULTS: A total of 1226 consecutive individuals underwent carotid ultrasonography. Carotid bodies were detected as solid, pebble-shaped, hypoechoic structures and the overall carotid body detection rate was 78.7% (965/1226). Univariate and multivariate regression analyses indicated that hypertension, chronic heart failure (CHF), chronic lung disease, smoking and high BMI were positively associated with carotid body enlargement. Compared with controls (2.63 µl), carotid body volume was significantly elevated in simple hypertensive (3.11 µl, P < 0.001), simple CHF (3.27 µl, P = 0.004) and simple smoking (3.47 µl, P < 0.001) groups. Moreover, the individuals with three comorbidities (4.05 µl) had significantly larger carotid bodies than those with one (3.23 µl, P < 0.001) or two comorbidities (3.46 µl, P = 0.017), suggesting that there existed a cumulative effect of comorbidities on carotid body volume. CONCLUSION: Carotid body enlargement is strongly associated with hypertension and other sympathetic-related diseases or risk factors, and carotid body volume evaluated by carotid ultrasonography may be further explored as a promising screening and evaluation predictor for carotid body modulation therapy in patients with hypertension and other sympathetic-related diseases.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of Chinese medicine in the treatment of adenoid hypertrophy in children. METHOD: Screening standard articles, extracting relevant data from meta-analysis, were analyzed by Revman5.1 software, by searching PubMed, Medline, VIP, Wan Fang and Chinese HowNet database 2006-2016 in traditional Chinese medicine treatment of children with adenoid literature. RESULTS: 206 articles met the inclusion criteria, of which ten were selected and included in the meta-analysis, and there were 803 patients. The results showed that the remission rate of the Chinese medicine treatment group was better than that of the Western medicine group. The combined effect of the amount of OR 2.06, 95% Cl (1.45, 2.96) and the combined effect of the amount of the test Z = 4.12, P < 0.00001 showed the recurrence of the disease was lower in traditional Chinese medicine treatment group than the Western medicine group. The combined effect of the amount of OR 3.05, 95% Cl (2.11, 4.56) and the combined effect of the amount of the test Z = 5.86, P < 0.00001 showed the total effective rate is high in the traditional Chinese medicine treatment group than the Western medicine group. The difference between the combined effect of the amount of OR 2.79, 95% Cl (1.78, 5.03) and the combined effect of the amount of the test of Z = 4.54, P < 0.00001 was statistically significant, which showed the treatment effect of Chinese medicine group is obviously better than the Western medicine group. CONCLUSION: The use of Chinese medicine for the treatment of children with adenoid hypertrophy has good clinical efficacy.

The Prospective Urban Rural Epidemiology (PURE) China Action on Spine and Hip status (CASH) study focused on the prevalence of osteoporosis and spinal fracture in China. The aim of the PURE CASH study is to determine the prevalence of osteoporosis and spinal fracture, and explore the potential relationship between spinal fracture and bone mineral density (BMD). This study is a prospective large-scale population study with a community-based sampling and recruitment strategy. The aim is to determine the prevalence of osteoporosis and vertebral fracture in this population, to evaluate the association between vertebral fractures and BMD values, and to assess the prediction power of BMD for incident fractures. Participants in the PURE CASH study are all from the PURE study in China, recruited from 12 centers in 7 Chinese provinces. The inclusion criteria are that participants should be aged more than 40 years and able to give informed consent. Exclusion criteria are pregnant women, individuals with metal implants in the lumbar spine, use of medications or the existence of any disease or condition known to have a major influence on BMD, and inability to give informed consent. A total of 3,457 participants undergo a quantitative computed tomography (QCT) scan of the upper abdomen. The scanning parameters are as follows: 120 kVp at all centers, mAs between 75 and 200, FOV 40 cm×40 cm. The BMD values of L1 to L3 are measured, and the average BMD calculated. The American College of Radiology QCT criteria for the diagnosis of osteoporosis is applied to determine the presence of osteoporosis. The scout view images of T4-L4 vertebrae are reviewed by two experienced radiologists for semi-quantification of vertebral fractures according to Genant's method.

Coronoid process fractures of the ulna are difficult to treat, and are associated with stiffness, recurrent instability, and pain. Hence, treatment of coronoid process fractures are challenging for surgeons. The purpose of this study was to report the clinical outcomes of an anterior surgical approach associated with plate fixation for Regan and Morrey type II or type III fractures of the coronoid process.We evaluated 16 consecutive patients who underwent surgical treatment for fracture of the coronoid process of the ulna from March 2012 to July 2016. Ten patients had a type II fracture, and 6 patients had a type III fracture. All patients underwent surgical treatment for coronoid process fracture through an anterior approach. While preserving the neurovascular structure, all fractures were treated with buttress plate fixation, maintaining the gap between brachial artery and median nerve. Each patient was treated with concentric reduction of both the ulnotrochlear and the radiocapitellar articulations, without any evidence of elbow instability, except 1 case, who showed some medial instability.At the final follow-up, solid osseous union was confirmed for all coronoid fractures. The average time to radiologic union was 16.3 weeks. The mean flexion-extension arc was 124.25 ±â€Š12.12 degree, with a mean flexion contracture of 8.25 ±â€Š4.36 degree, and further flexion of 132.5 ±â€Š9.31 degree. The mean forearm rotation arc was 167.81 ±â€Š10.49 degree. Fifteen patients achieved a functional arc of motion. The mean Mayo elbow performance score was 92.1 points, with 12 excellent cases and 4 good cases.Coronoid process fractures of the ulna can be treated successfully with plate fixation through an anterior surgical approach, which allows for accurate reduction and rigid internal fixation and early functional exercise, resulting in a reasonable outcome.

BACKGROUND: The role of renal sympathetic nerve (RSN) in hypertension should be better understood. We aimed to three-dimensionally reconstruct the renal nerves, and explore its anatomical and histochemical characteristics in hypertensive canine model and patients. METHODS: Renal arteries with surrounding tissue were collected from canines and cadavers with or without hypertension. Serial renal artery hematoxylin-eosin sections were used for three-dimensional reconstruction, and morphological parameters were collected and analyzed. RESULTS: In hypertensive canines, the mean renal nerve number was 26.71 ±â€Š5.68 versus 19.84 ±â€Š5.68 in controls (P = 0.02), and the middle renal nerve volume was 5.31 ±â€Š2.13 versus 2.60 ±â€Š1.00 µl in controls (P = 0.01). Renal tissue norepinephrine concentrations, tyrosine hydroxylase and substance P immunoreactivity in RSN, and growth-associated protein 43 immunoreactivity in renal ganglion were significantly increased in hypertensive canines. In humans, the renal nerve was evenly distributed along the renal artery in a network pattern. The renal ganglion volume was 72.75 ±â€Š33.43 in hypertensive patients versus 37.04 ±â€Š23.95 µl in controls (P = 0.029) and the mean neuronal size in renal ganglion was 1187.3 ±â€Š219.9 µm in patients versus 714.8 ±â€Š142.7 µm in controls (P = 0.002). Tyrosine hydroxylase immunoreactivity in the RSN was 0.153 ±â€Š0.014 in patients versus 0.104 ±â€Š0.019 in controls (P = 0.013). Growth-associated protein 43 immunoreactivity in the renal ganglion was 86 612.8 ±â€Š14 642.0 in patients versus 33 469.8 ±â€Š15 666.8 µm/mm in controls (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Our study suggests that RSN and renal ganglion histological remodeling occurs in individuals with hypertension and the distal segment or branches of renal artery might be a promising therapeutic target for RSN modulation therapy.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is one of the most common chronic liver diseases worldwide, and precision therapeutic will be a benefit for the NAFLD regression. In this study, we observed low microRNA 146 b (miR-146 b) expression in NAFLD mice model induced by methionine-choline-deficient diet (MCD) compared with control group. Furthermore, miR-146b-/- mice induced MCD exhibited severe liver steatosis and hepatitis. A bio-distribution study showed that novel Lactosylated PDMAEMA nanoparticles effectively targeted hepatocytes Lac-PDMAEMA. We coupled miR-146b mimic with Lac-PDMAEMA and then were administrated to NAFLD mice model, which could obviously alleviate the hepatic steatosis. Lac-PDMAEMA effectively delivered miR-146b mimic to hepatocytes with a ∼8-fold upregulation of miR-146b mimic targeting MyD88 and IRAK1, and in turn suppressed the expression of PPARγ. Meanwhile, TNF-α and IL-6 mRNA levels were decreased after administration of Lac-PDMAEMA/miR-146b mimic. So, we made a conclusion that targeted delivering miR-146b mimic to the hepatocytes by, coupling Lac-PDMAEMA nanoparticles could effectively alleviate the hepatic steatosis in NAFLD mice, which maybe bring a new and effective way to intervene and therapy the NAFLD.

Despite the diverse designs for the lumbar interbody fusion cage, there is no consensus on the optimal design to date. The current study aimed to compare the efficacy and complications associated with the direction-changeable and traditional lumbar cages for treating lumbar spondylolisthesis.We conducted a retrospective study including 109 patients with lumbar spondylolisthesis, who were admitted to our hospital from January 2013 to December 2014. The patients were divided into the direction-changeable (group A) and traditional (group B) lumbar cage group.All patients underwent single-level transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion and were followed up for 12 to 24 months. There were 52 cases in group A and 57 cases in group B. Surgery-related parameters, including operation time, bleeding volume, and hospitalization time, were recorded; there was no significant difference between the 2 groups regarding these parameters. The visual analog scale and Oswestry disability index at the last follow-up showed significant improvement compared with preoperative values in both groups (P < .05). Patients in group A demonstrated more intervertebral space height maintenance postoperatively than patients in group B but the difference was not statistically significant (P > .05). In group A, complications included 3 cases of nonunion (5.77%) and 1 case of cerebrospinal fluid leakage (1.92%). In group B, complications included 9 cases of nonunion (15.79%) and 1 case of postoperative infection (1.75%). There was a significant difference between both groups in terms of the nonunion rate and total complication rate (P < .05).The direction-changeable lumbar cage has merits such as a higher bone fusion rate and fewer postoperative complications compared to the traditional lumbar cage.

Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia (MPP) is a common disease in children. Qingfei Tongluo formula (QTF) has been used for the treatment of MPP clinically, but the therapeutic effect remains unclear compared to conventional treatments with Western medicines. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess changes in the expression levels of relevant factors associated with microcirculation after MPP and to compare the therapeutic effect of QTF with that of azithromycin (AZM) on experimental mice with MPP. A total of 174 children admitted with clinical diagnoses of pneumonia (80 MPP and 94 non-MPP) were used to identify differences in the expression patterns of factors in the microcirculation using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. A BALB/c mouse model of MPP infection was established to determine the therapeutic effect of QTF. The results showed that the expression level of thrombomodulin (TM), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), d-dimer (D-D), interleukin (IL)-6, and IL-10 were upregulated after MPP both clinically in children and in the mouse model. After 3 days of therapy, the amount of total MPP DNA decreased, especially in the mid- and high-dose QTF treatment groups. The expression levels of VEGF, IL-6, and IL-10 also decreased in response to treatment with QTF or AZM. However, there was no influence on D-D levels. QTF treatment also decreased TM expression. In conclusion, QTF treatment inhibited the progression of MPP, reduced vascular permeability, and improved pulmonary microcirculation more effectively than conventional treatment with Western medicine.

RESUMO

Idiopathic mesenteric phlebosclerosis (IMP) is a rare disease and it is easy to be misdiagnosed, which is characterized by intestinal obstruction symptoms, such as abdominal pain, bloating and vomiting. In this study, a case of IMP was observed and the literatures were reviewed. Computed tomography shows funicular high-density shadow and vascular calcification shadow along the vessels around the bowels. Narrow band imaging (M-NBI) endoscopy revealed the disappeared honeycomb capillary, the disordered microvascular structure and the increased density of blood vessels.

We selected 13 tag single nucleotide polymorphisms (tSNPs) to investigate whether they were associated with breast cancer risk in the Chinese Han population. Upon statistical analyses of clinical data from 551 patients and 577 controls, we found that six of the 13 SNPs were associated with breast cancer; namely, rs4973768(Odds ratio (OR) = 1.30, 95% confidence interval (CI) =1.01-1.67), rs981782(OR =1.30, 95% CI=1.01-1.66), rs1432679(OR =0.84, 95% CI=0.70-0.99), rs10759243(OR=1.30, 95%CI=1.09-1.55), rs10822013(OR =1.18, 95% CI=1.00-1.39) and rs704010(OR =1.63, 95% CI=1.04-2.56). When stratified based on breast cancer subtype, our analyses revealed that three SNPs (rs981782, rs10759243 and rs704010) correlated with ER+ breast cancer, while another three (rs4973768, rs1432679 and rs10822013) correlated with ER- breast cancer. We obtained similar results while investigating the correlation of SNPs with PR status or clinical stage. Our results suggest that associations identified between SNPs and breast cancer through genome-wide association studies (GWAS) may not always be generalizable across races.

STUDY DESIGN: The study aimed to build a new cervical artificial disc C3-C7 segment prosthesis, and perform a biomechanical comparison between the new prosthesis and the Prestige LP prosthesis using a three-dimensional non-linear finite element (FE) model. PURPOSE: The study compared the biomechanical differences between the new cervical artificial disc prosthesis based on the physiological curvature of the end plate and the Prestige LP prosthesis after artificial disc replacement. BACKGROUND CONTEXT: There has been no prior research on artificial disc prostheses based on the physiological curvature of the end plate; studies of biomechanical changes after cervical disc arthroplasty (CDR) are few. METHODS: An FE model of the C3-C7 segments was developed and validated. A new cervical artificial disc prosthesis based on the physiological curvature of the end plate and the Prestige LP prosthesis were integrated at the C5-C6 segment into the validated FE model. All models were subjected to a follower load of 73.6 N and a 1 Nm in flexion-extension, lateral bending, and axial torsion. The segmental range of motion (ROM) and stress on the prostheses were analyzed. RESULTS: The ROM in most segments after CDR with new cervical artificial disc prosthesis was more similar to that of the normal cervical spine than the Prestige LP prosthesis. However, there was no significant difference between the two prostheses. The stress on the new artificial disc was significantly less than that in the Prestige LP prosthesis. CONCLUSIONS: There was no significant difference in ROM in all segments after CDR for the two prostheses. The stress on the new cervical artificial disc prosthesis based on the physiological curvature of the end plate was significantly less than that in the Prestige LP prosthesis. The new artificial disc prosthesis is feasible and effective, and can reduce the implant-bone interface stress on the end plate, which may be one of the causes of prosthesis subsidence.

The difference converging method (DCM) used to predict the R-branch and the Q-branch high-lying rotational lines for diatomic systems is improved in this study. The key analytical formulae of the DCM method are modified by adding a higher order spectral term Hυ, and adding a physical converging criterion to improve the accuracy of predictions. Applications of the improved DCM method to the R-branch of the TiF molecule and the Q-branch of the (193)IrN molecule show that the accuracy of the R-branch and the Q-branch rotational lines is about one order of magnitude better than the results obtained using the previous formulae, which demonstrate the necessity of the added small term Hυ and the physical converging criterion. The DCM results are also shown to be better than the extrapolated rotational lines using the least-squares method.

The analytical formula derived by Sun et al. in 2011 and used to predict the rotational lines for rovibrational diatomic systems is improved in this study. The new formula is obtained by adding a higher order spectral term Hυ that is neglected in our previous expression. A physical requirement is also added to the converging process to minimize the possible error of the predicted rotational line. All these are applied to study some rovibrational transition systems of (63)Cu(35)Cl and NaF molecules. The results indicate that the accuracy of the P-branch rotational lines predicted by this new formula is about one order of magnitude better than the results obtained using the previous formula, and that both the small Hυ contribution and the improved converging requirement may play a vital role in predicting the high-lying rovibrational energies and the rotational lines. Comparisons between physical predictions and mathematical extrapolations on the rotational lines are also given.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to provide morphological data of endplates for the redesign of cervical artificial disc for use in the middle and lower cervical spine (C3-C7). METHODS: Reformatted CT scans of 73 individuals were analysed. The shapes of superior endplates (SEPs) and inferior endplates (IEPs) were classified as either flat or arced. The curvature radius of the IEP and sagittal disc angle were measured in the mid-sagittal plane. The maximum transverse diameter (MTD) of the SEPs and IEP was measured in the coronal plane. RESULTS: The majority of SEPs were flat (79.5 % at C7 and 91.8-95.9 % at C3-C6). Almost all (98.6-100 %) IEPs were arced. The curvature radius has a gradually increasing trend from C3 to C6 (P < 0.05, mean 29.26 mm). There were significant differences at C3-C7 in the average sagittal disc angles (5.80°, 6.92°, 7.51°, and 8.82°, respectively; P < 0.05; mean 7.26°), the average MTDs of the SEPs (13.64, 14.42, 15.03, and 16.74 mm, respectively, P < 0.05; mean 14.96 mm) and the average MTD of the IEPs (16.77, 17.67, 19.15, and 21.66 mm, respectively; P < 0.05; mean 18.81 mm). CONCLUSION: The majority of SEPs were flat, while almost all IEPs were curved. The curvature radius of IEPs has a gradually increasing trend from C3 to C6. The average sagittal disc angles, MTDs of the SEPs and IEPs significantly increased from C3 to C7. Based on the above, the current cervical artificial disc design does not sufficiently match the morphology of cervical endplates (CEPs). This mismatch may lead to some postoperative complications of cervical disc arthroplasty.

Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia (MPP) is a common disease in children. Qingfei Tongluo formula (QTF) has been used for the treatment of MPP clinically, but the chemical constituents and mechanism involved remain unclear. This study aimed to analyze the main chemical constituents and to explore the possible mechanism of action associated with QTF treatment of MPP. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry was employed to identify the compounds contained in the QTF extract. A BALB/c mouse model of MP infection was established. After treatment with QTF (0.85 and 1.70 g/kg) for 3 days, hematoxylin and eosin staining was performed in lung tissues for histological examination. Inflammatory cytokines were detected by ELISA. Western blot analysis was used for detecting phosphorylated proteins involved in MAPK and nuclear factor (NF)-κB signaling pathways. In the mouse model, a large amount of pulmonary interstitial infiltration of lymphocytes and plasmacytes were seen as well as bronchus and vasodilation congestion. Following QTF treatment, inflammation was alleviated significantly compared with the model group. Inflammatory cytokines [interleukin (IL)-6, transforming growth factor-ß1, IL-8, IL-1ß and tumor necrosis factor-α] in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid were decreased dramatically. In addition, we found that QTF inhibited activation of phosphorylation of JNK, ERK and NF-κB. In conclusion, QTF alleviates MPP inflammation possibly via inhibitory activation of MAPK/NF-κB pathways, which can act as a new agent for MPP treatment.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to determine the effect of inhibiting malonyl-CoA decarboxylase (MCD) on cardiac remodeling following myocardial infarction (MI) in rats. We used an ultrasound (US)-mediated microbubble (MB) approach for targeted delivery of a microRNA (miRNA) interference plasmid to the myocardium to silence MCD expression. METHODS: Five pairs of RNA interference sequences were screened and ranked according to their highest inhibition rates in HEK293 cells. The plasmid with the highest inhibition rate was transfected by US into the rat myocardium after mixing with lipid MB. Twelve and 16 weeks after MI, cardiac function was measured by echocardiography, and glucose transporter-4 (GLUT-4) and high-energy phosphate levels were monitored in the myocardium before and after transfection. RESULTS: Ejection fraction (EF) decreased by 16% in the control MI group, while it decreased by 8% in the MCD inhibition group that utilized the US-mediated MB approach. Concomitant with the improved EF, high-energy phosphates were increased and lactic acid was decreased in the left ventricle (LV), with no changes in triglyceride or GLUT-4 levels. CONCLUSIONS: Inhibiting MCD by an US-mediated injection of miRNA into the rat myocardium increased energy reserves in the LV after MI, most likely by limiting lactic acidosis and improving cardiac function without increasing lipid toxicity.

PURPOSE: To propose a new measure, the height for screw index (HSI), as a predictor of C2 nerve dysfunction in patients who have received posterior C1 lateral mass screw (C1LMS) fixation for atlantoaxial instability and to examine whether the HSI scores correlated with the development of C2 nerve dysfunction through retrospective analysis of 104 C1LMS inserted in 52 patients with atlantoaxial instability. METHODS: The medical records of patients who underwent C1LMS fixation were retrospectively reviewed. C1LMS, 3.5 mm in diameter, was inserted for atlantoaxial stabilization. The sagittal plane of the planned C1LMS trajectory was reconstructed from CT images. The HSI was defined as the difference in height between C2 ganglion and its corresponding foramen. C2 nerve function was assessed using a validated visual analog scale questionnaire. Each foramen receiving C1LMS was considered as a single unit and patients were categorized to group 1, HSI ≥4.0 mm; group 2, HSI <4.0 mm. RESULTS: The mean HSI score was 4.7 ± 0.8 mm (range 3.1-6.5 mm) with 85 (81.7 %) units in group 1, and 19 (18.3 %) units in group 2. Fourteen (13.5 %, 14/104) units developed C2 nerve dysfunction. C2 nerve dysfunction was reported in 4 units in group 1, and 10 units in group 2, respectively. The percentage of C2 nerve dysfunction was significantly higher in group 2 than that in group 1 (P < 0.001, Pearson Chi-square test). CONCLUSIONS: The HSI score correlates with the development of C2 nerve dysfunction in patients receiving C1LMS fixation for atlantoaxial instability and may be a useful predictor of C2 nerve dysfunction.

BACKGROUND: Community-acquired pneumonia in children is common in China. To understand current clinical characteristics and practice, we conducted a cross-sectional study to analyze quality of care on childhood pneumonia in eight eastern cities in China. METHODS: Consecutive hospital records between January 1, 2010 and December 31, 2010 were collected from 13 traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and western medicine (WM) hospitals in February, May, August, and November (25 cases per season, 100 cases over the year), respectively. A predesigned case report form was used to extract data from the hospital medical records. RESULTS: A total of 1298 cases were collected and analyzed. Symptoms and signs upon admission at TCM and WM hospitals were cough (99.3% vs. 98.6%), rales (84.8% vs. 75.0%), phlegm (83.3% vs. 49.1%), and fever (74.9% vs. 84.0%) in frequency. Patients admitted to WM hospitals had symptoms and signs for a longer period prior to admission than patients admitted to TCM hospitals. Testing to identify etiologic agents was performed in 1140 cases (88.4%). Intravenous antibiotics were administered in 99.3% (595/598) of cases in TCM hospitals and in 98.6% (699/700) of cases in WM hospitals. Besides, Chinese herbal extract injection was used more frequently in TCM hospitals (491 cases, 82.1%) than in WM hospitals (212 cases, 30.3%) (p < 0.01). At discharge, 818 cases (63.0%) were clinically cured, with a significant difference between the cure rates in TCM (87.6%) and WM hospitals (42.0%) (OR = 9.8, 95% confidence interval (CI): 7.3 ~ 12.9, p < 0.01). Pathogen and previous medical history were more likely associated with the disappearance of rales (OR = 7.2, 95% CI: 4.8 ~ 10.9). Adverse effects were not reported from the medical records. CONCLUSIONS: Intravenous use of antibiotics is highly prevalent in children with community-acquired pneumonia regardless of aetiology. There was difference between TCM and WM hospitals with regard to symptom profile and the use of antibiotics. Intravenous use of herbal injection was higher in TCM hospitals than in WM hospitals. Most of the cases were diagnosed based on clinical signs and symptoms without sufficient confirmation of aetiology. Audit of current practice is urgently needed to improve care.
